Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

Volcanic tremors stop on La Palma but eruption may not be over:
The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma fell silent as constant tremors stopped late on Monday, though experts cautioned this did not necessarily mean the eruption is nearing an end after 85 days. Seismic activity all but stopped around 9 pm local time on Monday, the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute, Involcan, said on Tuesday. It’s the longest period without tremors since the eruption began. “This does not imply the eruption is ending, since on other occasions halts were followed by a renewed increase in activity,” Involcan tweeted. The wholesale price of electricity marks another historical record at 291.73 euros / MWh driven by gas: The average price of electricity in the wholesale market will stand at 291.73 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) this Wednesday, pulverizing the historical maximum of 288.53 euros / MWh reached on October 7. The new record is a consequence of the stratospheric rise in natural gas, the price of which has soared this week as a result of tensions between the West and Russia. The prices set by the Iberian pool for this Tuesday are still lower than those of France (more than 346 euros / MWh), Germany (295 euros) or Austria (311 euros). The Netherlands extends night lockdown for a month and brings school holidays forward: {Translation} December 14, 2021 – 10:40 p.m.
-The Dutch Government announced this Tuesday that the current “night lockdown”, whereby all non-essential activity closes at 5:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. GMT), will be extended until January 14, and the closure will be brought forward one week by Primary school holidays due to the threat of the omicron variant.
-Acting Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a press conference that the extension of the current restrictions is “inevitable” during Christmas and the two weeks after the new year, so anyone who offers a non-essential service , including hotels, shops and gyms, must close from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (04:00 GMT).
-Additionally, the maximum number of guests to a home is limited to four people over the age of 13 per day, and no exceptions to this rule will apply for Christmas or New Year’s Eve family gatherings. Primary schools will bring up the Christmas holidays, so they will close from next Monday, and will not reopen their doors until January 10, although they will not be obliged to offer virtual education to children during that time. Worldwide Computer Hack: A new exploit is allowing hackers access to many of the international computer networks and data bases that major corporations rely on to run the Internet and provide user services.
Chinese hackers are already exploiting a ‘fully weaponised’ software vulnerability which is causing mayhem on the web, with experts warning that it is the ‘most serious’ threat they have seen in decades.
That could mean stealing data on those servers such as medical records and photos, plundering company databases for people’s bank details, or locking up servers and extorting firms in so-called ‘ransomware’ attacks.
And there is little that most ordinary users can do to stop this from happening, or any way to tell if data has been stolen in this way. Most companies will have additional security measures in place such as encryption software which would likely protect sensitive data, but users will have little or no way of knowing if this is the case and will be unable to take extra measures to protect the data even if they find out it is vulnerable.
The flaw is considered so serious because the affected software is used in the wide range of devices that use Java software. It is so popular and embedded across many companies’ programs that security executives expect widespread abuse.
Online services used by millions including Netflix, Amazon, Uber and LinkedIn and cloud-based services such Apple iCloud, Android OS, Google Documents and more are all understood to be under threat from the software bug.
As one cybersecurity source who spoke to MailOnline put it: ‘This is where you put your faith in the lap of the computer Gods and hope it gets fixed soon.’ (The best advice for now is to keep everything, your system and all software & apps, fully updated. Exploit patches will be included in new updates if and when they become available. Also, keep a close eye on all bills, statements and receipts for unauthorized transactions. -Ed.) NASA craft ‘touches’ sun for 1st time, dives into the corona: A NASA spacecraft has officially “touched” the sun, plunging through the unexplored solar atmosphere known as the corona.
Scientists announced the news Tuesday during a meeting of the American Geophysical Union. The Parker Solar Probe actually flew through the corona in April during the spacecraft’s eighth close approach to the sun. Scientists said it took a few months to get the data back and then several more months to confirm. The Parker will keep drawing ever closer to the sun and diving deeper into the corona until its grand finale orbit in 2025. Artists Rendering Image:NASA/AP. Annapurna III- The great mountaineering challenge of the 20th century is finally conquered: Annapurna (8,091 meters), the first mountain standing over 8,000 meters high to be conquered by man – Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal made the first ascent in 1950 – hid other Annapurnas in its shadow, none of which are as severe and complex as the southeast ridge of Annapurna III (7,555 meters). This autumn, it was finally climbed. Marked as the great objective of mountaineering in the 20th century, Annapurna III had been visited by some of the most famous names in the business, who made their attempts in dribs and drabs over the last 40 years.

Andalucia Politics- Conservatives Outraged Socialist Backed Budget Includes 1 Billion Euros of EU Covid Recovery Funds As An Income Source: {Translation, summary}
Vox spokesperson in the Andalusian Parliament, Manuel Gavira, said of the rejection of his party to the approval of the draft budget for 2022 that “in that budget there are things that we do not like”, aspects among which he has included “those 1,000 million euros that are put as income from the Covid fund” arguing that “it is money that is not going to arrive”, as well as explaining about the rejection, “when they bring you a socialist budget, obviously… we and the PSOE have nothing to do with it”.
(This raised some interesting questions. Keep in mind that in 2020 Andalucia only paid €34,240,699 in expenditures and ran a €300,000 deficit, see graphic below. The current Andalucian gov’t’s proposed 2022 budget is balanced by injecting an extra income of 1 BILLION Euros in EU grant money? Almost 30 times what they spent in 2020, pouring into the 2022 budget from EU funds alone? Paid directly to Andalucia in immediately available funds for 2022 spending? To be co-mingled with funds spent on typical mundane expenditures they would have to pay for in any case, when the EU money is supposed to be for Covid damage “recovery and economic stimulus”? Sounds like wishful thinking, and smells of book cooking, to me. And don’t get me started on what happened the last time the EU dumped a load of money in Andalucia- highway ramps to nowhere and half built airports ring a bell? Yes, we could use the money, but a special committee, transparent and accountable, needs to manage it this time. -Ed.)

EUROPE

Lukashenko says there will be “no other option” but to cut off gas supplies to Europe if the EU imposes new sanctions:
{Translation, summary} 13/12/2021 14:56
– Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Monday that he would resort to cutting off gas supplies to Europe if he were to find himself in an “emergency” situation because of possible new sanctions imposed by the European Union against the country.
-In an interview with the Turkish television channel TRT, he said that “if the sanctions put Belarus in danger, there will be no other option but to respond with such measures” and thus block the passage of gas through Belarusian territory.
-The Belarusian leader had already threatened in November to leave the EU without gas from Russia if Brussels applied a new set of sanctions in the midst of the migration crisis on the Belarusian-Polish border.
-Subsequently, Lukashenko has assured that he will not hesitate to implement this measure if Poland proceeds to close the common border. However, on 2 December, the EU announced new sanctions against Minsk, targeting 17 individuals and more than a dozen organisations.
-Brussels continues to hold Minsk responsible for the thousands of refugees currently at the border waiting to enter the EU to seek asylum. However, Belarus has blamed the migration crisis on European mafias operating from Germany, Poland and other EU countries that charge refugees to bring them to Europe. Do-Over! Matches of the final round of the Champions League after UEFA redoes draw:
-Paris Saint-Germain will play Real Madrid while Liverpool take on Inter Milan in two of the standout ties in the last 16 of the Champions League after an embarrassed UEFA was forced to redo Monday’s draw following a “technical problem”.
-PSG had initially been paired together with Manchester United but the reworked draw sees them play Real while the Old Trafford side will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.
-UEFA had earlier blamed a “material error” due to a “technical problem with the software of an external service provider” as it announced that the draw for the first knockout round of its flagship competition would have to be redone. Eye Drops That Could Replace Reading Glasses For Millions Approved By FDA: In October 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly approved VUITY eye drops to treat presbyopia, an age-related condition that results in progressively blurry vision when focusing on near objects, according to the biopharmaceutical company AbbVie. On December 9, the drug-maker announced that the treatment is now available via prescription at pharmacies across the US.
VUITY is a first-of-its-kind once-daily eye drop that provides sharp close-range vision within 15 minutes for a duration of up to 6 hours, without impacting distance vision. Its active ingredient, a medication called pilocarpine, works by causing the pupil of the eye to shrink which helps with seeing things up close. Two-dose vaccines induce lower antibodies against Omicron, study finds: Two-dose COVID-19 vaccine regimens do not induce enough neutralising antibodies against the Omicron coronavirus variant, British scientists found, indicating that increased infections in those previously infected or vaccinated may be likely. Stunning- Facebook Court Filing Admits ‘Fact Checks’ Are Just A Matter Of ‘Protected’ Opinion: In a court filing responding to a lawsuit filed by John Stossel claiming that he was defamed by a “fact check” Facebook used to label a video by him as “misleading,” (Facebook’s parent company) Meta’s attorneys assert that the “fact check” was an “opinion,” not an actual check of facts and declaration of facts. Under libel law, opinions are protected from liability for libel.
This is a public relations disaster, revealing that their “fact checks” are not factual at all and should be labeled as “our opinion” or some such language avoiding the word “fact.”
As an amateur, it seems to me that if Facebook inserts its opinions into posts or blocks them because of its opinion, then that does make it a publisher with legal responsibility for what appears on its website. SPAIN

Electricity continues to rise and sets a new record this Monday: {Translation}
-The maximum cost will be between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with 315.43 euros / MWh, while the minimum will be 217.71 euros between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
-The average price of electricity in the wholesale market will reach 268.21 euros/MWh this Monday, 4.37% more than this Sunday, which has also been the most expensive in history costing 256.98 euros/MWh, according to data from the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.
-This increase comes after a weekend also of rises despite the fact that on weekends prices tend to relax with respect to weekdays due to the decrease in electricity demand. Thus, this Sunday, electricity set a new record, being the most expensive in history at 256.98 euros/MWh, while on Saturday it stood at 239.53 euros/MWh.
-The maximum price of electricity for this Monday will be between 21.00 and 22.00 hours, with 315.43 euros/MWh, while the minimum price will be 217.71 euros between 05.00 and 06.00 hours.
-The pool prices have a direct impact on the regulated tariff – the so-called PVPC – to which almost 11 million consumers in the country are subscribed, and serves as a reference for the other 17 million who have contracted their supply in the free market.
-The increase in price in recent months in the electricity market is mainly explained by the high prices of gas in the markets and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rights, at historic highs this year. Source, Spanish.

COVID- UK’s alert level raised to level 4 – second highest tier – amid rapid increase in Omicron cases: The UK’s COVID alert level has been raised to its second highest following a rapid increase in cases of the Omicron variant.
The country’s four chief medical officers have recommended to ministers that the UK moves from level 3 to 4.
The CMOs warn Omicron is spreading much faster than Delta and there is less vaccine protection against symptomatic disease from the new variant – as they urged the public to get their booster jabs. COVID UK- Daily lateral flow testing for double-jabbed contacts of coronavirus cases to start on Tuesday: Those fully vaccinated should take a daily lateral flow test for seven days to slow the spread of the virus, the government has said.
Unvaccinated adults must continue to self-isolate for 10 days if they are a contact of someone with COVID, and anyone who tests positive or develops symptoms will need to self-isolate.
People will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace or via the NHS COVID-19 app to tell them they are a contact of someone who tested positive and what action they need to take. Julian Assange had a stroke in Belmarsh Prison: The WikiLeaks publisher, 50, who is being held on remand in the maximum-security jail while fighting extradition to America, was left with a drooping right eyelid, memory problems and signs of neurological damage.
It happened at the time of a High Court appearance via video link from Belmarsh in October.
A ‘transient ischaemic attack’ – the interruption of the blood supply to the brain – can be a warning sign of a full stroke. Assange has since had an MRI scan and is now taking anti-stroke medication.

COVID-19

Covid Malaga- Malaga sum 570 cases of Covid in a day in which the rate shoots up to 20 points: {Translation, summary} Dec.10, 2021 14:57
-The province of Malaga has added 570 new infections of coronavirus this Friday, which is more than triple compared to the previous day, when there were 168; and the highest number of cases in Andalusia.
-On this day two deaths have been reported and the cumulative incidence in 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants has risen more than 20 points, to 186.1, in the whole province of Malaga.
-Hospital pressures are rising with eight new bedridden patients in the last 24 hours. Currently, 113 people are hospitalized (+3), of which 29 (+2) are in Intensive Care Units (ICU).
-The cumulative incidence per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days has increased in both the province and the capital. Specifically, in the province it is 186.1 (164.7 on Thursday) and in the capital it is 194.1 (171.7 the previous day).
-In each sanitary district the incidence increases. Thus, it rises in Axarquia, which goes from 159.3 to 166.9; in Malaga, which places its rate at 193.0 (171.7 on Thursday); in Serrania, from 243.6 increases to 269.1 and in La Vega is 89.9 (68.1 previously).
For its part, in the Costa del Sol district exceeds 200, going from 176.5 to 203.3, while the Guadalhorce Valley goes from 138.8 to 154.8, according to data from the Andalusian Government consulted by Europa Press. New Covid variant found in France: A new variant of the Covid virus has been found in France with several cases reported in Marseilles.
Experts have designated the variant B.1.640.2 and will now work to see whether it warrants investigation or concern. Scientists will now determine what the mutations could mean for the variant – whether it will spread more quickly, make people more seriously ill or evade vaccines. ANDALUCIA

Health establishes 1,000 Covid admissions as the limit for new restrictions in Andalusia: {Translation} 10/12/2021 17:38
-The 2,133 new Covid infections recorded this Friday by the Andalusian Ministry of Health confirm the difference in the incidence figures provided the day before when only 434 positives were confirmed, five times less. The average of the last two days does comply with the logical progression of infections of the week when, except for the singular data of Thursday, the rest of the days exceeded the thousand daily cases.
-This gap has raised the 14-day cumulative incidence rate by more than 14 points in just one day to stand this Friday above 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is still one of the lowest in Europe and represents only half of the Spanish rate.
-The data gap with respect to that offered on Thursday is also observed in the figures of hospitalized patients. Andalusia exceeds 400 admissions of Covid patients (410), with 15 more patients than on Thursday. In the last week there have been 108 hospital admissions for Covid. Of the total number of patients admitted, 88 were treated in Intensive Care Units.
-The number of hospitalizations is far from the ceiling indicated by the experts to adopt restrictions again. According to the Regional Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, if the pressure on care and hospitalization is close to a thousand people admitted due to coronavirus, “more coercive” measures would have to be taken.
-Speaking to Canal Sur Radio, Aguirre has announced a new meeting of the committee of experts before the end of the year, after the one held on Thursday in which it was agreed to extend to bars, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and nightclubs the implementation of the Covid certificate. This Friday, the Andalusian Government will ask the High Court of Justice of Andalusia the judicial endorsement for its implementation until January 15.
-Currently, Covid patients occupy 2.3 percent of conventional hospital beds and 4.97 percent of ICU beds. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-salud-fija-millar-ingresos-covid-limite-para-plantear-nuevas-restricciones-andalucia-202112101138_noticia.html

Conservative political party Vox will appeal the Covid passport requirement for restaurants and nightlife: {Translation}
-Vox will appeal the measure announced by the Junta de Andalucía to require the covid vaccination passport for access to hospitality and nightlife businesses, as well as for residences and hospitals.
-This was announced Friday by the parliamentary spokesman of Vox, Manuel Gavira, who has indicated that the appeal will be filed before the Chamber of the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) through the special procedure for the protection of fundamental rights.
-By this means, according to the representative of Vox, it will be achieved “much faster than the ordinary procedure, which is essential considering that what is at stake are the freedoms and rights of the Andalusians”.
-According to Manuel Gavira, “we will not tolerate that the Government of Moreno curtails the freedoms and fundamental rights with an authoritarian measure that discriminates against citizens, since the misnamed covid passport has become a mechanism to end the freedoms of the Spanish”.
-The parliamentary spokesman of Vox has warned that this measure of imposing this passport causes “setbacks” because of the problems generated by having to exercise control over customers, a task that does not correspond to them.
-With this initiative, “the hotel and nightlife workers are forced to act as policemen and it cannot be expected that these workers are placed at the door of restaurants or nightclubs demanding health data that are private,” he explained. Ireland Obliges Travellers From UK to Test for COVID-19 for 5 Consecutive Days: Authorities in Ireland have announced that all persons planning to travel to Ireland from Great Britain will be obliged to take a COVID-19 antigen test each day for five days in a row upon their arrival due to the recent increase in the number of infections caused by the virus and in particular the spread of the Omicron variant in the UK.
Such a decision has been confirmed by the country’s government, while it stressed that the tests would be in addition to the recently introduced requirement that passengers to the Republic have a negative result of a COVID-19 PCR or lateral flow test before boarding a plane. Most reported U.S. Omicron cases have hit the fully vaccinated -CDC: Most of the 43 COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant identified in the United States so far were in people who were fully vaccinated, and a third of them had received a booster dose, according to a U.S. report published on Friday.
While the numbers are very small, they add to growing concerns that current COVID-19 vaccines may offer less protection against the highly transmissible new variant. Among the Omicron cases, 25 were in people aged 18 to 39 and 14 had traveled internationally. Six people had previously been infected with the coronavirus. Geminid meteor shower 2021 peaks December 13-14: The Geminid meteor shower – always a favorite among the annual meteor showers – is expected to peak in 2021, on the night of Monday, December 13 into Tuesday, December 14. The Geminids are a reliable shower for those who watch around 2 a.m. local time from a dark-sky location. We also often hear from those who see Geminid meteors in the late evening hours. On a dark night, near the peak of the shower, you can often catch 50 or more meteors per hour. On an optimum night for the Geminids, it’s possible to see 150 meteors per hour.
This year, a waxing gibbous moon will be above the horizon during peak time for viewing. But it’ll set shortly afterwards, leaving the sky dark for watching meteors. Thus the best time to watch for Geminid meteors in 2021, is likely before dawn – say, from around 3 a.m. to dawn – on the morning of December 14. Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules: The US won its appeal against a January UK court ruling that he could not be extradited due to concerns over his mental health.
Judges were reassured by US promises to reduce the risk of suicide. His fiancee said they intended to appeal.
Wikileaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson said in a statement: “Julian’s life is once more under grave threat, and so is the right of journalists to publish material that governments and corporations find inconvenient.
“This is about the right of a free press to publish without being threatened by a bullying superpower.”
Amnesty International described the ruling as a “travesty of justice” and the US assurances as “deeply flawed”. Photo:REUTERS

COVID-19

Covid Spain- The incidence rate reaches high risk levels in Spain: {Translation, summary} December 9, 2021 7:02 p.m.
-Health has notified 26,412 infections and 84 deaths since Tuesday.
-The incidence in Spain passes the barrier of 300 points and climbs to 305.57 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, thus entering the ‘high’ contagion range of the coronavirus, according to the new COVID traffic light in Health. This Wednesday Health did not update its data because it was a holiday, and on Tuesday it reported 290.1 cases of incidence, 15 points of difference with respect to this Thursday. The last time the country registered a similar figure was on August 24, when the rate stood at 305.61 cases.
-However, for the country to be at “high risk of contagion”, other criteria must be added in addition to the incidence , such as the occupation of the ICUs or the number of patients admitted for COVID. For example, the hospitalization rate corresponds to low risk levels, since it is between 5 and 15 points (11.55). Covid Malaga- Four Malaga health districts register a Covid rate higher than 100 and one, more than 240:
-The health district rates are: Axarquía (159.3) Costa del Sol (176.5), Malaga (171.7) and Valle del Guadalhorce (138.8), while one (Serranía) has reached 243.6 Covid positives per 100,000 inhabitants. Only the health district of La Vega is below 100, with 68.1.
-The rate for Malaga province, as a whole, is 164.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days (some 6.8 more than on Wednesday). Only the province of Huelva in the Andalusian region has a higher incidence rate than Malaga (190.4). The lowest rate is in Granada (85.3) and it the only one of the eight Andalusian provinces whose incidence rate is below 100. The average in Andalucía is 136.2. ANDALUCIA

Andalusia agrees to implement Covid certification in hospitality and nightlife until January 15: {Translation, summary} 09/12/2021 19:28
-The Junta de Andalucía, at the proposal of the committee of experts, has agreed to extend access control by means of Covid certificate to hospitality and nightlife establishments in the community.
-This decision, which will be in force until January 15, will be implemented once ratified by the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) as already happened with its application in health and social-health centers.
-To gain access to bars, restaurants and nightlife venues, it will be necessary to present the vaccination certificate, also known as Covid passport, or a certificate of recovery or negative test -PCR in 72 hours or antigen test in 48 hours carried out by an authorized center.
-The Committee of experts, which has met again this Thursday in person at the Palace of San Telmo, has also decided to modify the capacities foreseen in risk levels 1 and 2. (The specific new capacities were not mentioned. -Ed.)
-The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, and analyzed the epidemiological situation and the pressure on healthcare. Aguirre recalled that “Andalusia remains at low risk level, but the trend of indicators makes it necessary to maintain preventive measures” and added that “along with the protection of the most vulnerable people we must focus on prevention in enclosed spaces that have a higher risk of exposure and in crowds of people, especially in the upcoming Christmas season”. Three cases of the Omicron variant confirmed in Andalucía, and another four suspected: The Junta de Andalucía has confirmed the first three cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant in the region this Thursday, 9 December, as well as the existence of four other suspected cases that have yet to be positively identified.
Of the three confirmed cases of Omicron, two are located in Cadiz province and another in Almeria and all patients appear to have ‘mild symptoms’ are ‘in self- isolation’ and none of them has required hospital admission. USA

What Transparency?  FDA Says It’ll Take 75 Years to Fully Release Pfizer Vaccine Data:
Public Health and Medical Professionals for Transparency has filed Freedom of Information Act requests for the data, which the FDA at first said would take 55 years to produce at 500 pages per month for the entire 329,000 page cache of documents.
Now the FDA is asking a judge to give it 75 years to produce the data, saying there’s over 59,000 more pages than weren’t mentioned in the first request. That would take the full release to 2096, wrote Aaron Siri, a lawyer working on the case.
On Dec. 2, Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., introduced a bill calling for the head of the FDA to release all records about the vaccine in 100 days.
“Since the Biden administration is hell-bent on forcing these vaccine mandates on us, the public has every right to know how this vaccine was approved, especially in such a short amount of time,” he said in a statement. “After all, the FDA managed to consider all 329,000 pages of data and grant emergency approval of the Pfizer vaccine within just 108 days.” Full article: https://www.newsmax.com/health/health-news/fda-vaccinedata-pfizer-75-years/2021/12/08/id/1047876/

Italy slaps Amazon with €1.1 billion fine for abusing dominant market position: Italy’s competition watchdog said Amazon abused its dominant position by promoting its own logistics, or fulfilment, service that ships and delivers packages, on its Italian platform to the detriment of third-party sellers who did not use it.
The move comes two weeks after the same authority imposed a 68.7-million-euro fine on Amazon for infringing EU laws through restrictions that penalised sellers of Apple and Beats products.
In the same action, Apple was ordered to pay 134.5 million euros.

COVID-19

Covid Andalucia- The bridge holiday raises infections in Andalucia but Covid patients only occupy 2% of hospital beds: {Translation} 08/12/2021 14:07
-The increase in the number of infections during the Immaculate Conception long weekend, with 1,374 positive cases reported on Wednesday, December 8, has raised the Covid incidence rate over the last 14 days. This indicator stands at 143.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 5.3 points more in the last 24 hours and higher than a week ago (105.9 cases). For the fifth time in a week, cases confirmed by PCR or antigen test exceed 1,200, according to the daily balance sheet provided today by the Ministry of Health and Families.
-Precisely, the highest volume of infections has been recorded in one of the most touristic provinces. Malaga is the province with more infections with 392, followed by Cordoba with 261, Seville with 250; Cadiz with 154; Granada with 118; Almeria with 78; Huelva with 73 and Jaen with 48.
-In the last 24 hours there has been one death in the province of Malaga.
-Although the pressure on health care has increased, it is still far from the tensions caused by the third wave. The Regional Ministry of Health and Families has reported that, at present, 395 patients confirmed with Covid-19 remain in Andalusian hospitals, of which 82 are in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Only 2.26% of beds are occupied by Covid patients, almost half the Spanish average (4.07%), while in the case of ICUs it is 4.47%, less than half the national average, which is above 10%.
-Malaga again stands out as the province with the most patients admitted (112, 26 of them in ICU), ahead of Seville (86, 14 in ICU), Cordoba (37, 10 in ICU), Cadiz (37, six in ICU), Huelva (35, four in ICU), Almeria (33, 13 in ICU), Jaen (30, four in ICU) and Granada (25, five in ICU). Covid Spain- In Spain, Covid hospital admissions jump 32% in a week, as incidence hits 290 cases per 100,000: 8DEC21 20:48
-All of the indicators are rising, according to the latest reports from the central Health Ministry. Infections, hospitalizations and the number of patients being treated in the country’s intensive care units (ICUs) are on the up. In the midst of a long weekend – December 6 and 8 are national holidays – and with the Christmas holiday season just around the corner, the 14-day cumulative incidence stands at 290 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the data published on Tuesday.
-With nearly 80% of the country’s population fully vaccinated against Covid-19, the pressure on hospitals is lower than during previous waves of the pandemic. But the rise in cases is still having an effect on the healthcare system. Admissions grew nearly 32% in the last week, and there are now more than 5,000 Covid-19 patients in hospital – 948 of them in a critical condition. The Health Ministry reported 43,808 new cases since Friday, as no data is supplied over the weekend or on national holidays. A total of 78 fatalities were added to the official death toll. SPAIN

Electricity Rates On The Rise Again: The respite in the soaring price of energy in Spain’s wholesale electricity market this Wednesday (8 December), mainly due to the national holiday and the reduced demand, has been brief. OMIE electricity market operator data shows the wholesale price will rise on Thursday to 216.74 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). The maximum price this Thursday will be between 9pm and 10pm, at 252.59 euros/MWh, while the minimum price will be 175.10 euros, between 4am and 5am.

ANDALUCIA

The TSJA approves requiring the Covid passport in Andalusia from December 7 to January 15- These are the cases in which the Covid certificate is mandatory in Andalusia:
{Translation} 08/12/2021 17:17
-The imposition of the Covid certificate in Andalusia is a reality. With the approval of the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA), the Junta will demand one to be vaccinated to enter nursing homes and socio-health centers, although the intention of the autonomous government is that the rule be extended to nightlife and catering.
-For the moment, from this Tuesday, December 7 and until next January 15, anyone wishing to visit health centers with hospitalization and residential social and health centers must have the Covid-19 certificate or a negative diagnostic test for the coronavirus.
-This has been certified by the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía (BOJA) extraordinary published yesterday. The order states that the user must present his Covid passport in the following cases:
*Visiting a hospitalized person.
People over 12 years of age who visit or accompany a hospitalized patient, whether in a public or private center, may access the place provided they have a Covid-19 certificate or negative diagnostic test issued by the public health service or by an authorized laboratory. The accreditation that the Covid test has been passed within the last six months will also be useful.
*Visiting a nursing home
The order establishes that visitors to nursing homes must present one of the three ways that have been required since last Tuesday: Covid passport, negative test or proof of having passed the disease. This requirement applies to all persons over 12 years of age.
*Emergencies and hospital consultations
In the case of accompanying a patient to a hospital or emergency room, no documentation is required. However, if the patient ends up requiring hospital admission, the accompanying person will be asked for his or her certificate.
*Penalties for non-compliance
Failure to comply with this order may be punished with fines of 100 to 3000 euros, for minor infractions; 3001 to 60000 euros for serious infractions; and up to 600,000 euros for very serious infractions.

Boris Johnson announces Plan B restrictions to combat spread of Omicron variant:
The new COVID restrictions being implemented in England include:
-The reintroduction of the work from home order, for those who can, from Monday
-The extension of mandatory face mask wearing to “most public indoor venues”, including theatres and cinemas, from Friday. However, there will be exemptions “where it is not practical”, such as when eating, drinking, exercising or singing
-The NHS COVID pass, commonly referred to as a vaccine passport, will be made mandatory in a week’s time for nightclubs and venues with large crowds. People will be able to use the pass to show either proof of two vaccine doses or a negative lateral flow test result
-The introduction of daily tests for people who are contacts of Omicron cases, instead of a period of isolation.
-However, Mr Johnson stressed the new measures were “not a lockdown” and people “should not” cancel Christmas parties or Nativity plays. Full article: https://news.sky.com/story/covid-19-boris-johnson-announces-plan-b-restrictions-to-combat-spread-of-omicron-variant-12490130

Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League following a 3-0 defeat at Bayern Munich on Wednesday, failing to make it past the group stage of the competition for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

Chinese rover investigates ‘cube’ on far side of the moon: A photograph of a cube-like object captured by a Chinese rover on the far side of the moon has fanned speculation over what it could be.
The Yutu-2 caught an image of what seems like a large cubic object on the horizon about 80 metres from its location, said Our Space, a Chinese government science website, citing the rover’s last log on Dec. 3.
The solar-powered Yutu, or “Jade Rabbit” in Chinese, will cover the distance of 80 metres in two to three lunar days, according to Our Space, or two to three Earth months. The robotic rover has been operating in the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin since its deployment in January 2019.
To see more images of Vetiver go to this link.

SPAIN

Spain approves Covid-19 vaccines for children, with drive set to begin on December 15: Spain will begin to vaccinate children aged between five and 11 years old against Covid-19 from December 15. On Tuesday, the country’s Public Health Commission approved the inoculations among the under-12s after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for this age group was validated by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and was backed by the group of experts that is advising the Spanish health authorities.
The campaign will begin as soon as the first vials arrive in Spain, something that is due to happen on December 13. From there, the vaccines will be distributed among the country’s regions, which will be able to begin the process from December 15 onward. In Spain, each of the 17 territories is in charge of its own healthcare systems, vaccination programs and coronavirus restrictions. Austria plans to lift lockdown, but not for the unvaccinated: The unvaccinated will stay in lockdown when Austria lifts its wider general lockdown on Sunday, Chancellor Karl Nehammer confirmed on Tuesday, a day after he took office.
Austria went into lockdown two weeks ago to counter a surge in daily COVID-19 infections to record levels, with restaurants, bars, theatres and non-essential shops shut to all but take-away business. Hotels are closed to tourists. Infections have plunged since but intensive-care bed occupancy is still rising. Full article:

Hundreds of Millions of Euros Worth of New Bitcoin Thefts- Hackers Continue to Find Ways to Steal Supposedly Secure Cryptocurrency:
-Cryptocurrency trading platform BitMart has just disclosed a “large-scale security breach” that it blamed on a stolen private key.
Blockchain security and data analytics company PeckShield estimated the total loss to be around $200 million, calling the whole chain of events as “Pretty straightforward: transfer-out, swap, and wash.”
-The development is the latest in a wave of hacks that have targeted cryptocurrency platforms such as PolyNetwork, Cream Finance, Liquid, and bZx, among others.
-Last week, malicious actors orchestrated a heist amounting to $120 million worth of Bitcoin and Ether assets from BadgerDAO, a decentralized finance (DeFi) lending service.
-In a separate development, blockchain startup MonoX Finance disclosed that a hacker drained roughly $31 million by exploiting a “smart contract” error in the software the service uses to carry out token swaps and enable customers to trade tokens with other network participants.
-And in August, an unnamed attacker stole more than $600 million worth of tokens from the cryptocurrency platform PolyNetwork, only to return nearly all of the money two weeks later. Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/12/hackers-steal-200-million-worth-of.html

Researchers develop Covid-killing steel, say can destroy 99.8% of virus: According to a study published on November 25 by a team of researchers at the University of Hong Kong, the newly-developed alloy can inactivate 99.75 per cent of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, within three hours and 99.99 per cent within six hours.
The researchers, led by Huang Mingxin at the department of mechanical engineering and Leo Poon at the Centre for Immunity and Infection, have said the alloy’s antimicrobial property is long-term, even if it is continuously damaged during service, and it can be produced using existing “powder metallurgy” technique keeping costs low.
The researchers said the alloy can protect against other disease-causing microbes as well. The “anti-pathogen stainless steel also exhibits an excellent inactivation ability” for H1N1 influenza A virus and the Escherichia coli bacteria, they added.

Dec. 2021 Program Schedule for Bio Beach Restaurant:
In El Morche, behind the Church, on the Paseo Maritimo.
-Wed. Dec. 8 at 11am: Speaker: David Baird will present his celebrated book Between Two Fires, a poignant account of the anti-Franco guerrilla movement in Málaga and Granada. This is the true story of what happens when humble country folk find themselves in the front line in a secret war. COVID-19

Covid Andalucia- Covid infection rate accelerates in Andalusia in the middle of the long weekend but is not noticeable in hospitals: {Translation} 06/12/2021 14:22h
-The Covid pandemic curve in Andalusia continues its upward trend and the rate of infection is accelerating during business lunches and Christmas travel: the cumulative incidence for 14 days has reached 135.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday. This is 10.6 points more than 48 hours ago. Just a week ago this rate was below 100 (99.5) cases.
-The community recorded this December 6 up to 1,638 coronavirus infections in two days, which represents the highest figure since August 27, when 1,698 were counted. This is the fourth consecutive day above 1,200. In addition, there have been three new deaths, the same as on Saturday.
-Hospitalizations are growing but at a slower rate than in the previous five waves thanks to widespread vaccination coverage. The region has 80.8% of the population with the complete vaccination schedule and 91.8% of those over 12 years of age, while 82.2% of the population and 93.4% of those over 12 years of age have received the first dose.
-In the last 48 hours, there have been five more hospitalizations due to Covid-19, bringing the total to 328, an increase of 73 compared to a week ago, while the number of patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has risen by one to 70, 13 more than last week.
-The 1,638 cases of this Monday exceed the 1,232 of Saturday, the 1,233 of Friday, the 1,226 of Thursday, the 868 of Wednesday, the 915 of Tuesday and the 883 of Monday and last Sunday. The province with more infections is Malaga is the province, with 442, followed by Seville with 410, Cadiz with 288, Huelva with 150, Jaen with 131, Almeria with 100, Granada with 59 and Cordoba with 58. While the deceased two are from Cordoba and one from Jaen.
-Malaga is the province with more hospitalized with 90 and 24 ICU patients, followed by Seville with 74 and eleven in ICU, Cordoba with 39 and ten in ICU, Almeria with 30 and 13 in ICU, Jaen with 28 and three in ICU, Cadiz with 28 and four in ICU, Huelva with 21 and three in ICU and Granada with 18 and two in ICU. Covid Spain- More than half of Spain at medium risk for coronavirus: Coronavirus cases in Spain continue to rise, but this spike is not affecting all regions equally. According to the latest Health Ministry report, released Friday evening, the cumulative incidence of infections over the previous 14 days now stands at 248 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 234 on Thursday.
-Under the new traffic light system, which assesses the risk level of the pandemic, seven of Spain’s 17 regions are at medium risk. They are Catalonia, Navarre, Aragón, the Valencia region, the Basque Country, Madrid and Castilla y León. In other words, more than half of the Spanish population – 26.2 million people – are living in a region where community transmission is widespread and the healthcare system is under constant and rising pressure. The rest of Spain is at low risk, meaning the spread of the virus is not affecting hospitals.
-But the epidemiological situation in Spain is far from promising. The curve of infections has shot up and, although it has not reached the levels being seen in other European countries, such as the Czech Republic, Austria and Belgium, where the 14-day cumulative incidence rate is more than 2,000 cases per 100,000, the rate of new cases is on an upward trend. In one week, the incidence rate in Spain jumped 45%, while hospital admissions rose by 26%. The situation is unlikely to improve given the upcoming Christmas festive season. Extinguished- the forest fire declared on Friday in Cómpeta that affected 22.58 hectares (22.58 acres): {Translation}
The forest fire declared last Friday in the place Pico Cisne in the municipality of Competa has been extinguished on Monday at 18:00 hours by the Infoca Plan.

MALAGA

At least 70 staff at Malaga’s Regional Hospital, all vaccinated, test Covid-positive after Christmas meal for 174: SUR has been able to confirm that at least 70 workers at the city hospital are in quarantine at home after supposedly being infected at a Christmas meal for staff.
The Junta de Andalucía’s General Directorate of Public Health has reported an outbreak that affects 22 professionals from the Regional Hospital, although different sources consulted by SUR raise that figure to 70. The majority of those infected work in the hospital’s intensive care unit. All were apparently vaccinated and most of them are asymptomatic. Britons Facing Long Queues at Spanish Airports Due to Passport Checks: Travellers from the United Kingdom who have reached Spain in the last few days have faced long queues of up to 45 minutes. This is because the UK nationals now need to wait in the non-EU travellers’ line for their passports to be checked and stamped, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Taking into account that the winter holidays are just around the corner and with more people wishing to visit famous Spanish destinations, such as the Canary and the Balearic Islands, the travel agencies have called on Britons to be prepared for even longer lines during the upcoming weeks. EUROPE

France to close nightclubs until 2022, extend use of face masks in schools amid Covid-19 surge: Nightclubs in France will be ordered to close for four weeks starting this weekend to counter surging Covid-19 cases that have seen hospitals announce emergency protocols as beds fill up, Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Monday.
Stricter social distancing and extended use of face masks will also be required in schools. Health passes proving Covid vaccination or inoculation will now be required for eating in reserved zones at outdoor Christmas markets. Updated Covid Activity Restrictions in EU Countries for the Holidays:
-Italy is making life more uncomfortable for unvaccinated people this holiday season, excluding them from indoor restaurants, theaters and museums starting Monday. Italian police have been empowered to check whether diners in restaurants or bars have a “super” green health pass.
-Switzerland on Monday began allowing — but not requiring — event organizers to bar anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated or hasn’t recovered from COVID-19.
-Sweden introduced a vaccination requirement for indoor events with more than 100 people starting Dec. 1.
-On Monday, the Netherlands reversed itself on plans to open indoor venues to vaccinated people only, sticking instead with a 5 p.m. closure for restaurants, cinemas and other public sites. Sarco suicide capsule ‘passes legal review’ in Switzerland:
-A 3D-printed capsule, destined for use in assisted suicide, may legally be operated in Switzerland, according to advice obtained by Exit International, the organisation that developed the ‘Sarco’ machine.
– It’s a 3-D printed capsule, activated from the inside by the person intending to die. The machine can be towed anywhere for the death. It can be in an idyllic outdoor setting or in the premises of an assisted suicide organisation, for example.
-The person will get into the capsule and lie down. It’s very comfortable. They will be asked a number of questions and when they have answered, they may press the button inside the capsule activating the mechanism in their own time.
-The capsule is sitting on a piece of equipment that will flood the interior with nitrogen, rapidly reducing the oxygen level to 1 per cent from 21 per cent in about 30 seconds. The person will feel a little disoriented and may feel slightly euphoric before they lose consciousness. Death takes place through hypoxia and hypocapnia, oxygen and carbon dioxide deprivation, respectively. There is no panic, no choking feeling. [In an environment where the oxygen is less than 1 per cent, after losing consciousness death would occur after approximately 5-10 minutes, according to Philip Nitschke.]

EU Citizens Now Subject to Pre-Departure COVID-19 Testing When Travelling to UK: The British government has introduced the testing requirement to nationals arriving from the European Union Member States in a bid to minimize the further spread of Omicron, the new variant of the COVID-19 virus.
Such a decision means that starting from Tuesday, December 7, vaccinated and unvaccinated European nationals are obliged to present a negative LFD or PCR pre-departure test certificate, not older than 48 hours, in order to enter the United Kingdom. DoctorLaptop’s Tips #96, 07DEC21
Modest Supply of New Budget Priced Windows Laptops Hitting the Stores in Time for the Holidays- What you need to know before buying!!!:
-In order to provide the popular budget priced laptops at prices under €550, the manufacturers are cutting corners, using lower quality components and assembly methods.
-Some of these new budget laptops are “disposable” and can’t have their hardware upgraded, meaning they are not engineered to be disassembled, repaired or upgraded with more RAM or a new hard drive. Some even use glue instead of screws to hold everything together. The manufacturers expect you to get 2 to 4yrs use, and then replace it. I strongly recommend getting a 2yr extended warranty on these models (so 3yrs total coverage). If it breaks under waranty they will just replace it with a new one. When these low budget laptops break, recovering data from the hard drive is difficult, it requires breaking open the case to extract the hard drive, which may not even be possible if it is soldered in, and then installing that drive into another laptop. Keeping regular data backups is strongly advised.
-Windows is steadily moving to the Apple way of doing operating system repairs with the release of Windows 11. Rather than “patching” a corrupt Windows system as techs have been able to do up until now, many major Windows system repairs will be fixed by reinstalling the system. That is the Apple approach, any serious problems require a reinstall to fix. Keep in mind, saved data files are often lost or corrupted during a Windows reinstall. This way of doing repairs assumes the user always keeps current data backups on an external device or a cloud account.
-In the €550-€900 range the laptops are better quality and are built so they can be disassembled for repairs and upgrades. These have a 4 to 5yr expected life, or more if properly maintained with annual professional servicing.
-If you want a better quality laptop, that will last for 6 yrs or more, with an extra sturdy construction, metal frame and strong hinges, that can be disassembled for repairs and upgrades, you need to specifically ask for a “small business laptop” at a major computer outlet, like MediaMarkt. These will cost about €100 to €150 more than a standard build laptop with the same specs. If you spend endless hours on your laptop, or travel with it, you will appreciate the difference.

Finally, a Fusion Reaction Has Generated More Energy Than Absorbed by The Fuel: A major milestone has been breached in the quest for fusion energy.
For the first time, a fusion reaction has achieved a record 1.3 megajoule energy output – and for the first time, exceeding energy absorbed by the fuel used to trigger it.
Although there’s still some way to go, the result represents a significant improvement on previous yields: eight times greater than experiments conducted just a few months prior, and 25 times greater than experiments conducted in 2018. It’s a huge achievement.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has argued that travel restrictions don’t affect the COVID-19 infection rates and that governments should find other solutions to mitigate the risk of infections: Such preventive measures didn’t decrease the infection rates.
“Peaks and troughs in new COVID-19 infections have happened even as international travel restrictions stayed stable throughout 2021, and the consistent increase in cases in 2020 took place even as restrictions were at their highest,” IATA notes in a press release.
The same pointed out that the travel restrictions have marked a drastic change in societies and economies, with a halved capacity and revenues and preventing families and people from being together. During this time of uncertainty, God’s word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. We are a Bible based Church community continuing to help people find their way to God through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

El Puente Christian Fellowship – Sunday Service
El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/El-Puente-Christian-Fellowship-105285888299225/or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.
