What Happened To The Billions In EU Funds For Covid Relief?:
{DigameXtra Editorial}
– What happened to all that money? The national and regional gov’ts had such grand plans, to rebuild the social/business fabric of society! Oh, so many promises were made, project budgets proposed, plans developed, and of course the political brownie points made in speeches expounding on the coming growth we would see.
– Andalucia even tried to factor €3billion of it into their 2023 operations budget for a while, and announcements of budget surpluses were made with great fanfare. Soon after, the EU watchdogs reserved the right to monitor disbursements sourced from EU funds, and that great sum could no longer be spent at the discretion of regional officials to pad their budget. I saw no news updates about the Andalucia budgets losing that huge income, or the downward adjustments in budget that would be required as a result. How odd.
– Well, look around. Do you see improvements we were promised by the grinning Sanchez in numerous speeches, who was so proud of his successful lobbying for recovery funds in Brussels? Have all the vacant commercial properties filled up with thriving new enterprises? Have public services improved? Has your quality of life recovered?
– The answer is no, or no more than you would expect without those EU recovery funds.
– As soon as the Ukraine invasion occurred, and the energy crisis arrived, the gov’t and their lackeys in the press took advantage of the new crises to bury the EU Relief Funds story. Some billions of EU funds did arrive around that time, and seem to have fallen to the same black hole as the 2008 EU Housing/Banking Crisis Recovery Funds disappeared into.
– Those of us who who have been here for 12+yrs may remember the uncompleted highway projects with unfinished ramps to nowhere, financed by the 2008 recovery funds. A few years after those funds were spent, an embezzlement scandal erupted, involving construction services taking loads of money, faking supply purchase orders and then going bankrupt before completing projects, with little of the money ever recovered. Yup, same black hole.
– As some of these new EU Recovery Funds are not grants, but are in fact loans that will require repayment; the taxpayers will be on the hook for that. But where did that money we will be repaying go? Did we receive any benefit from the funds we will pay for? I smell another huge scandal on the horizon for our Socialist leaders.

Second vice-president, socialist Díaz, admits truth on the lowering of VAT on some foods, “It is not a measure that we believe can help”:
{Translation}
– The Second Vice-President and Minister of Employment and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, considers that the lowering of VAT on certain foods in the shopping basket, included in the Royal Decree-Law on measures to deal with the economic and social consequences of the war in Ukraine approved for a final vote yesterday, “is not the measure that she believes can help”.
– However, she defended the fact that the tax measure for certain foodstuffs included by the government “is not what the conservative Popular Party and the large distributors want”. “What they wanted was an absolutely generalised reduction in VAT on foodstuffs, and this is not happening in any way”, she stressed.

The PP plans a hot January for President Sánchez as releases of corrupt embezzler officials due to begin: {Translation, summary}
– The Sanchez government achieved its goal of ending the year with the crime of embezzlement reduced. From the PP, however, they are not going to give truce to the Executive with this matter and, in fact, they are already preparing a hot January against Pedro Sánchez for this decision focused on the first releases of corrupt people that will begin to be approved at the beginning of 2023.
– Last Thursday, with the whole of Spain awaiting the Christmas lottery draw, the Senate approved the reduction of the crime of embezzlement that ‘exonerates’ politicians who have not benefited financially from the fraudulent use of public money they were responsible for managing. The reform, tailor-made for the pro-independence leaders behind the pro-Crime, will, according to the PP, provoke “the same effect as the ‘only yes is yes’ law”, shortening the sentences of convicts, and clogging the courts with case reviews.
– The PP’s expectation, explains this source, is that the judges, from the second week of January, will begin to study the requests they are already receiving from “lawyers of politicians convicted of corruption”, and that the first judicial decisions will be taken as a result of the reduction of embezzlement. The pension system is unsustainable and Minister of Social Security Escrivá knows it- pension spending reaches a new record of 10,943 million, 6.15% more… and on January 1 pensions will rise 8.5%: {Translation}
– Spending on contributory pensions reached a record 10,943 million euros in December, 6.15% more than in the same month of 2021, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration reported on Tuesday.
– Bearing in mind that pensions will rise from 1 January by 8.5%, the Sánchez government is taking us straight towards bankruptcy, both for Social Security and for the Spanish economy, because the current level of public spending is clearly unsustainable.
– The average pension in the system amounted to 1,095 euros per month in December. This amount, which includes the different types of pensions (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphan’s pension and family allowance), has increased by 5.3% in the last year.
– The average retirement pension in the system is 1,259.8 euros. By schemes, the average retirement pension from the General Scheme is 1,407 euros per month, while the lowest is in the Self-Employed Scheme, at 838.6 euros/month. In the Coal Mining sector, the average monthly pension is 2,455.4 euros, and 1,398.7 euros in the Sea Scheme. The average amount of new pension registrations in the system amounted to 1,378.65 euros per month in November 2022 (latest data). The average widow’s or widower’s pension is 781.7 euros per month.
– Three quarters of December’s contributory pension payroll went to retirement pensions, 72.6%, or 7,939.6 million euros. Widow’s and widower’s pensions accounted for 1,842.1 million euros, while permanent disability benefits amounted to 982.6 million euros, orphan’s benefits to 150 million euros and benefits for family members to 28.8 million euros.
– Spending on contributory pensions stood at 11.7% of gross domestic product (GDP) in December, lower than in 2020 (12.4% of GDP), a year conditioned by the impact of the pandemic on GDP, and also lower than in 2021 (12.1% of GDP). MALAGA

Doctors report big increase in respiratory illnesses in Malaga province:
– There has been a significant rise in the number of people with colds and flu in Malaga recently and staff at health centres with emergency departments say they are seeing as many as 400 cases a day.
– The symptoms normally begin with a sore throat and runny nose, and then a fever with temperatures of 38 – 39 degrees for 24 to 48 hours. The patients normally recover within five days and medical staff say they are seeing very few cases with complications.
– During the worst days of the illness, patients with flu may also suffer pain all over their body and sometimes a bronchial infection. Some have reported vomiting and diarrhea at first as well, similar to gastroenteritis. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/cold-flu-respiratory-infections-20221228102636-nt.html

Tennis News- Kyrgios’s late United Cup withdrawal surprises Australia team mates:
– Kyrgios, who is ranked 22nd in the world and reached this year’s Wimbledon final, was set to lead Australia in the joint ATP and WTA event, which is being held in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth and offers ranking points and $15 million in prize-money. Organisers said the 27-year-old, who was due to face Britain’s Cameron Norrie in his first singles match on Thursday in Group D, withdrew due to injury.
– Alex de Minaur, who will now move into the number one men’s position for Team Australia, wanted to avoid discussing Kyrgios and focus on the upcoming event. Photo: Guglielmo Mangiapane. – The accumulated incidence in the over-60s at 14 days stands at 61.57 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants, which represents a decrease of about eight points compared to last Tuesday.

SPAIN

Scrooge Sanchez- Gov’t Plan For Inflation Relief Provides Almost No Benefit To Average Person- will give one-off 200 euro payment to earners of under €27,000, will freeze rents for 6 months, ends fuel discounts:
– This is the plan President Sanchez thinks will save us from inflationary ruin. It must still pass a final vote before enactment, and is sure to face strong opposition from all but the hardcore Left who made the proposal. I’ve read several similar articles in various Spanish papers, which mostly support the progressive gov’t  positions. Nearly all the comments, hundreds of them, are attacking Sanchez and the socialists for this proposal. Many are suggesting this will create a huge gain in support for the Conservative and far Right parties, something the most recent poll confirms, details in article further down. -Ed.
– In energy matters, it is expected that the bonus of 20 cents per liter of fuel will disappear as it was known up to now. Specifically, the aid will no longer be universal and will be limited to the sectors most affected by the impact of the energy crisis, such as carriers.
– The Executive has decided to attack the increase in the shopping basket by lowering the VAT for 6 months on some foods such as fish from 10% to 4%.
– With the future Housing Law completely stagnant, the Executive will renew the limit of 2% in updating the rental prices that are renewed annually. But in addition, and after the pressure exerted by United We Can, new contracts will also be frozen for at least six months. Fill Up This Week!- Spain ends fuel discount for almost all drivers:
– On Sunday January 1st 2023, almost all of Spain’s 27 million drivers will no longer have access to the 20-cents-on-the-litre subsidy on petrol, diesel and other types of fuel. This comes after the Spanish Cabinet decided to finalise its offer to the country’s population on Tuesday December 27th, as part of changes to its new ‘anti-crisis’ package which includes rent caps, VAT cuts on food and an extension to free public transport.
– The only drivers that can continue claiming the fuel discount in Spain in 2023 are transport workers such as truck drivers, as well as those in the agricultural, fishing and livestock sectors. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20221227/spain-ends-fuel-discount-for-almost-all-drivers/

Latest Poll Shows Huge Losses For Progressives/Socialists- Feijóo (PP) would win with 143 seats, almost 40 more than Sánchez (PSOE), and would reach 182 seats with Vox: {Translation, summary}
– The PP led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo would win the general elections with 33.2% of the votes and would win 143 seats, almost 40 more than Pedro Sánchez’s PSOE, which would obtain 26% and 104 deputies, according to a GAD3 survey for the Partido Popular to which Europa Press has had access.
– This poll, whose fieldwork was carried out between 16 and 21 December with 1,209 interviews, gives Vox an estimated 39 seats and 13.9% of the votes; Unidas Podemos 24 seats (10.4%); and Ciudadanos 1.8% of the votes, but would not achieve representation in Congress.
– According to data from the polling company headed by Narciso Michavila, the centre-right bloc of PP and Vox would win a total of 182 seats, a comfortable absolute majority, compared to the 128 seats won by PSOE and Unidas Podemos, the current governing coalition.

The Government temporarily limits the increase in highway tolls: {Translation, summary}
– The new anti-crisis plan of the Government imposes a ceiling of 4% on the concessionaires in the rise in prices compared to the 8% that should be due to the escalation of the CPI.
– The Ministry of Transport reports that between 2023 and 2026 it will subsidize part of the income that the concessionaires will stop receiving next year due to the containment of the increase in tolls.
– Specifically , a line of 23.3 million euros is enabled to finance the reduction of the rate increase in 2023, and the obligation is established for the General State Administration to provide the necessary items to partially mitigate the increase between 2024 and 2026. ANDALUCIA

EU’s fishing quota cutbacks could sink the Andalusian fleet, the sector fears:
– The cuts are likely to affect 65% of the region’s fishing fleet and cause serious problems for those who trawl in the Mediterranean, they claim.
– The agreement in Brussels means that the 64 trawlers will be able to operate in the Mediterranean for fewer than 150 days a year, and this comes on top of cutbacks of 37% which have already been applied in recent years. The decision will mean millions of euros in economic losses, the sector says.
– In 2023 the EU will also reduce the quotas of red prawns which can be caught in the Mediterranean by 5% for the first time.
– For the fishing fleet in the Atlantic, there will also be a reduction of 36% in the crayfish catch and this will make the situation inviable for many boats, say sources in Andalucía. Fifty trawlers will be affected, and they account for 40% of the total fleet. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/fishing-cutback-fears-20221227105944-nt.html

ENERGY CRISIS

Putin bans Russian oil exports to countries that implement price cap:
– President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday delivered Russia’s long-awaited response to a Western price cap, signing a decree that bans the supply of crude oil and oil products from Feb. 1 for five months to nations that abide by the cap.
– The Group of Seven major powers, the European Union and Australia agreed this month to a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian seaborne crude oil effective from Dec. 5 over Moscow’s “special military operation” in Ukraine. CULTURE

Performers’ fees, resold tickets and ‘rock & roll’ – Can we still afford to go to concerts?:
– Amid a rise in the illegal resale of tickets, exorbitant and fluctuating prices and scams, buying a concert ticket has become a risky proposition these days. Recently, controversy over the high cost of tickets in a Ticketmaster pre-sale for Taylor Swift’s new tour was so loud that it reached the political realm. In the summer, Bruce Springsteen likewise angered many fans with astronomical ticket prices for his concerts.
– Whenever such controversies occur, the question of whether concert tickets are overpriced comes up. And if they are overpriced, why is that the case? Are there enough measures being taken to combat scam ticket websites? Below, we explain the process of pricing and purchasing tickets. SPAIN

Storm Ephraim eases drought – most reservoirs recover to 2021 levels: {Translation, summary} 26/12/2022 04:50
– This week, the storm Efraín has caused severe flooding, especially in Extremadura, where it has even split a road and cut off villages. Rainfall has caused many problems, but has also left positive notes: Spanish reservoirs will close the year at the same level as last year when the forecast was to have a dry winter that would aggravate the drought situation that hit the Spanish countryside hard during the summer.
– The reservoirs are currently at 42.01%, compared to 42.31% at this point last year. This figure has been achieved thanks to the rainfall over the last two weeks.
– This makes it possible to close the year in the positive, although far from the forecasts that were made in the summer, so the news is good. The problem is that Spain is, for the second consecutive year, far from the average of the last ten years, which stands at 52.68% at this point in the year.
– Extremadura, which was precisely the region most affected by the storm, has achieved a record recovery in water levels: in just one week, the reservoirs have gone from including less water than in the last two years to exceeding both graphs and remaining very close to the average for the last ten years. The growth has been 13.75%, offering 49.41% of the total capacity, well above the 36.82% with which it closed 2021. Cáceres was the province with the highest increase in Spain, with a spectacular 21.97%. The second, Segovia, with a growth of 13.51%.
– In other places such as Andalusia, Ephraim has allowed for a lukewarm recovery. Andalusia is the region with the lowest percentage of water in reservoirs (28.37%), but the recent growth of 4.4% allows the crisis that the region has been experiencing for months now to be somewhat mitigated. Critical level provinces, such as Almería and Córdoba, are both below the 20% level
– Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid have suffered a similar effect: both were below the levels of other years and thanks to the storm Ephraim, they have managed to recover the figures of 2021.
– In Castile and Leon, Ephraim has only affected the southern area, Segovia. In the northern area (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country), the levels are similar to previous years
– On a positive note, the Valencian Community is the only autonomous region with levels above those of the previous two years, also exceeding the average of the last ten years. Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/espana/fuertes-lluvias-palian-sequia-forma-subita-pasado-ano-lejos.html

ENERGY CRISIS

The price of electricity rises by 41% this Tuesday, to 113.72 euros/MWh: {Translation, summary}
– The average price of electricity for regulated tariff customers linked to the wholesale market will rise this Tuesday to 113.72 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), which represents an increase of 41.6% compared to Monday.
– In this way, the price of electricity once again exceeds the 100 euro/MWh barrier, a level it has not reached since 19 December. The cheapest price was set on Sunday, Christmas Day, at 10.63 euros/MWh, the lowest level since May 2021.
– In the auction, the average price of electricity in the wholesale market – the so-called ‘pool’ – stands at 109.49 euros/MWh on Tuesday. The minimum price, 62.09 euros/MWH, will be from 03.00 to 04.00 hours, while the maximum price will be recorded between 18.00 and 19.00 hours, with 164.69 euros/MWh, according to provisional data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.
– Added to this pool price is the compensation to gas companies, which must be paid by consumers who benefit from the measure, consumers on the regulated tariff (PVPC) or those who, despite being on the free market, have an indexed tariff, which for this Tuesday stands at 4.23 euros/MWh, according to provisional data.

HEALTH

Why you shouldn’t suck prawn heads during Christmas feast in Spain:
– Platters of prawns form part of the traditional feast on a Christmas table in Spain and every Spaniard knows that sucking on the freshly removed head is the very best part.
– However, the Spanish Food & Safety Agency, (AESAN) issued an advisory warning diners not to suck the heads of such shellfish because of the health risks associated with cadmium. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20201217/dont-suck-prawn-heads-spain-issues-health-warning-ahead-of-christmas/

Say good-bye to dull wrinkled skin. Embrace smooth, silky skin of your face with a natural glow for the NEW YEAR.
MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin

We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

AXARQUIA

Axarquia will have temperatures up to 23 degrees until the next Thursday: {Translation, summary}
– 0%. That is the probability of rain in the next few days in the Axarquia. That means that today, Christmas Eve, Christmas and the following days the “good weather” will be present in our region. Sunshine, rather spring-like temperatures and the logical humidity will be present these Christmas days. Today, Velez-Malaga has the highest temperatures in Andalusia as in previous days. 23 degrees which has incidentally caused many people to stroll along the beach and enjoy a spring-like Friday. SPACE

When will astronomers unveil the truth about the seven planets in ‘solar system 2.0’?:
– The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) meets the 7 intriguing exoplanets orbiting star TRAPPIST-1.
– A mere 39 light-years from Earth, a close neighbor in cosmic terms, the TRAPPIST-1 star is not sun-like. The star is about a 10th of the sun’s mass and about as wide as Jupiter. However, it’s what orbits it that gets exoplanet-hunters excited. Three planets were discovered in 2016 by a Belgian telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile called TRAPPIST – the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope.
– “We know the TRAPPIST-1 planets are made of stuff just like Earth,” Lewis, an exoplanet scientist at Cornell University, said. “So they might have Earth-like atmospheres.”
– Can JWST find out what’s in the atmospheres of these seven rocky exoplanets? Webb’s NIRSpec instrument makes it the only telescope capable of identifying the signatures of molecules such as methane, carbon dioxide and oxygen, possible signs of life on the surface and clues to the makeup of a planet’s atmosphere. After promising work decoding the gases present in the atmosphere of WASP-39b, last week astronomers finally got a glimpse of JWST’s first look at the TRAPPIST-1 system. Full article: https://www.space.com/james-webb-space-telescope-trappist-planets

Editor’s Note: Not much real news as the holiday weekends approach and writers take long weekends off. Mostly pre-written feel-good holiday stories, El Gordo lottery announcements, and articles about radical new laws supposedly being passed, that actually still have 3 months of reviews and modifications to survive before the final results are again voted on. Much ado about nothing.

EUROPE

Kremlin says US is fighting ‘indirect war’ with Russia in Ukraine as Zelensky visits US and Biden promises Patriot missile systems:
– Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky visited the United States in a surprise one-day visit Tuesday, where he was warmly received by the Congress and secured further US financial and military aid.
– Speaking on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said his visit to Washington suggests that the United States “is continuing its line of de facto fighting an indirect war with Russia”.
– Russia on Thursday accused Ukraine and the United States of turning a deaf ear to its concerns after Zelensky made the historic visit to Washington. “We can say with regret that so far neither President Biden nor President Zelensky have said even a few words that could be perceived as potential readiness to listen to Russia’s concerns,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
– “President Biden will announce a significant new package of nearly $2 billion of security assistance for Ukraine. It will contain a very important new capability: a Patriot missile battery, which will be a critical asset to defend the Ukrainian people against Russia’s barbaric attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure,” the White House statement said.
– Russia warned Washington last week against supplying the Patriot system to Ukraine. The US has already supplied Kyiv with HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and NASAMS ground-based air defense systems, among other military aid. Metal fragments found in ice cream cake sold at IKEA:
{Translation, summary}
– The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has been informed of the possible presence of metal fragments in the 400g ‘Daim’ brand chocolate almond ice cream cake, manufactured by Almondy and sold in IKEA shops.
– The alert concerns batch ‘L2130’, with an expiry date of 18/11/2023, which has been sold in IKEA shops in Andalusia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Castile and Leon, Basque Country, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia and Valencia, although it is not ruled out that it may have been redistributed in other autonomous communities.
– The AESAN recommends that people who have products affected by this alert in their homes refrain from consuming them and return them to the point of purchase, where they are already being recalled.

Spain’s Ministry of Health announces its vaccination schedule for 2023:
– Spain’s calendar of vaccinations for the year 2023 has just been approved, and applies to everyone resident in the country who is eligible for treatment under the Spanish Health Service. Next year there will be some changes, as follows:
*Invasive Meningococcal Disease*
– First, parents are advised to have their children vaccinated against against Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) because of the severity of the illness and its consequences. In Andalucía, the vaccination against Meningitis B is given to all babies in three doses, when they are two, four and 15 months old, against Meningitis C at four months and Meningitis ACWY at 12 months and 12 years old.
*Flu*
– Next year the Vaccination Calendar also includes a flu jab for children aged between six months and four years 11 months old.
*Herpes Zoster*
– The third vaccine to be incorporated next year is against Herpes Zoster, for the over-65s. This illness is particularly prevalent in the over-50s and especially in women.
*Human Papilloma Virus*
– The final change in 2023 is that the vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus is recommended for boys as well as girls. From January, all children over the age of 12 will receive this vaccine in two doses, with a six month gap in-between. MALAGA

Replica of historic sailing ship arrives at Malaga port as part of world tour:
– The first circumnavigation of the world by ship, known as the Magellan–Elcano expedition, was made by the Spanish carrack (sailing ship) the Nao Victoria, between 1519 and 1522.
– Five-hundred years on, the special anniversary is being celebrated with a world tour which will be stopping off in Malaga from Thursday 22 December until 15 January.
– The ship will be docked at Muelle Dos in Malaga port and the public will be able to go aboard and look around, imagining the lives of the sailors back in the 16th century during the voyage which was beset with danger (the Nao Victoria was the only one of the original five ships in the fleet to complete the three-year journey).
– The sailing ship is open to the public from 10am until 7.30pm every day except 24 and 31 December and 5 January when it will be open from 10am until 2pm, and 25 December, 1 and 6 January 4pm until 7.30pm.
– Tickets are available from the ship or online: https://www.fundacionnaovictoria.org/es/

EUROPE

Cash remains the most frequently used means of payment in stores but electronic payments grow further, ECB study shows:
– Cash is still the most frequently used means of payment at the point of sale, but its share is declining according to the latest study on the payment attitudes of consumers in the euro area, published today by the European Central Bank (ECB).
– Cash was used for 59% of point-of-sale transactions in 2022, down from 72% in 2019. It is the means of payment most often used for small-value payments in stores and for person-to-person transactions. A majority (60%) also consider it important to have cash as a payment option. Consumers perceive cash as helpful to remain aware of their expenditures, to protect their privacy and to allow transactions to be settled immediately.
– Overall, consumers are satisfied with their access to cash, with a large majority of consumers finding it easy to get to an ATM or a bank to withdraw cash in most countries. Full article: https://www.ecb.europa.eu/press/pr/date/2022/html/ecb.pr221220~62a7c988ef.en.html

GodFather Android Banking Trojan Targeting Users of Over 400 Banking and Crypto Apps:
– An Android banking trojan known as GodFather is being used to target users of more than 400 banking and cryptocurrency apps spanning across 16 countries.

Old cat looking for new home: Humbug is apparently 19 years old but is agile and sprightly. She is deaf though, so will need a secure and safe outside space. She’s been living in a small flat with a sunny terrace and loves to find a patch of sunshine to sleep in. She is very sweet natured and loves to sit on your lap but she does not like other cats. For this reason she would be better as the only cat.
Her owner passed away at the weekend and we are desperate to re-home her. We did care for her for a few weeks at our home, but she was not happy with our cats and our land in the Campo is unsuitable for her. She does walk very well on her lead, but she needs somewhere where she’s free to go outside which she loves doing.
If there’s a kind soul that could take her please get in touch.

SPAIN

Spain’s Constitutional Court cancels PM’s judicial reform:
– Spain’s Constitutional Court has suspended judicial reform amendments pushed by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government, prompting outrage from the administration over the rare intervention.
– The penal code changes would have paved the way for renewing the mandates of four of the 12 judges on the Constitutional Court. The government says the changes are necessary to end a four-year partisan stalemate that has paralysed judicial appointments and increasingly hamstrung the court system.
– But the right-wing opposition Popular Party (PP) and its allies have accused the government of trying to stack the courts with leftist allies whose appointments it has sought to block.
– Late on Monday, the court said it had “decided to admit the appeal by PP lawmakers” against the proposed reforms to the penal code.
– Cabinet minister Felix Bolaños called the court’s intervention “extremely serious”. “The Constitutional Court has suspended the legislative action of the legitimate representatives of the Spanish people, which has never happened in 44 years” since the adoption of the Spanish Constitution in 1978, he said.
– But PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo (pic) welcomed the decision. “Today, our democracy is strengthened,” he wrote on Twitter, promising “to defend Spain and its institutions without fear or concessions”. Abascal announces a lawsuit against President Pedro Sánchez for a “great criminal conspiracy” to commit a “real coup”: {Translation, summary} 20/12/22
– The president of conservative party Vox, Santiago Abascal (pic), announced today that next Friday they will present a complaint before the Supreme Court against the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, for “conspiracy to commit a crime” with the “separatist coup plotters” for the repeal of the crime of sedition and the reduction of embezzlement.
– Abascal has advanced the intention of his party to present this complaint in a press conference in Congress, after the decision of the Constitutional Court (TC) that paralyses the parliamentary processing in the Senate of the judicial reform promoted by the parties of the Government within the reform of the Penal Code approved last week in Congress.
– “What is happening is that Pedro Sánchez is agreeing with convicted criminals or fugitives to impunity for their crimes”, denounced Abascal, who, however, has welcomed the fact that the TC stops his “trampling” on the rights of deputies by the procedure used to push forward the reform of the Penal Code.
– The leader of Vox has insisted on the “extremely serious threat that this Government poses to coexistence, the rule of law, the Constitution and to Spain”, which is why he has stressed that attention should not be diverted from the “real coup” of Sánchez and his entire Government in what he has considered a “real conspiracy to commit a crime”.
– Abascal has not revealed the details of the complaint that they will present to the Supreme Court, only that they will register it on Friday against the President of the Government “and all those who have been involved in this great criminal conspiracy”.
– He did point out that, in addition to going to the Supreme Court, they will continue to work “tirelessly” to raise the announced motion of censure and alluded to the “millions of socialists who have been left without representation in Spain by the betrayal and lies of Mr. Sánchez”. ANDALUCIA

Andalusian reservoirs reach 27.5 % of their total capacity: {Translation, summary}
– Thanks to the latest rains recorded this December, Andalusian reservoirs have reached 3,294 hm, which means that they are at 27.5% of the region’s total storage capacity.
– The report on the drought situation in Andalusia shows an increase of 615 hm3 (5 %) in the water stored thanks to the rainfall recorded between 5 and 16 December. This rainfall was recorded mainly in the provinces of Huelva, Cadiz, Malaga and Granada.
– The Sierra de Grazalema (Cádiz) was the place with the highest amount of rainfall, reaching 570.6 l/m3.
– The volume of water stored in reservoirs remains, however, below previous records for this time of year, at 50 % of the average for the last decade.
– The Guadalquivir has increased its reserves by 328.6 hm3 (+4%) to 1,859 hm3, 23% of its capacity. The Sierra Boyera reservoir has not recorded any inflows and stores 1.78 hm3 (4.5 %); Puente Nuevo has increased by 2 hm3 and is at 14.6 %; and Negratín has received 2.37 hm3 (+0.4 %) with the rains and gathers 108.6 hm3 (19 %).
– In the Andalusian Mediterranean basins, the rainfall has led to an increase of 38.34 hm3 (+3.3%) to 428.8 hm3 (37% of its total capacity).
– The distribution of rainfall has been very irregular and the reservoirs that have benefited most have been La Concepción (8.5 hm3), in Málaga; Rules (8.17 hm3), in Granada; and Guadarranque (7.3 hm3), in Cádiz.
– La Viñuela (Malaga) has added 2.4 hm3 and stands at 10.6 % of its capacity, while the reservoirs of El Limonero and Guadalteba (Malaga) and Cuevas del Almanzora (Almeria) have not increased their volume.
– In the case of Guadalete-Barbate, reserves have increased by 99.7 hm3 (+6%) and the basin has a volume of 447.1 hm3 of water in storage (27%).
– The increases recorded in Los Hurones (33 hm3) and Bornos (24.2 hm3) are particularly noteworthy, while the Tinto-Odiel-Piedras-Chanza basin increased its volume by 148.2 hm3 (+13%) to 558.6 hm3, i.e. 50%.
– The rains have brought 64.8 hm3 to the Chanza reservoir and 42.5 hm3 to the Andévalo.

EUROPE

Europe gripped by worst ever bird flu outbreak: Europe has been gripped by its “most devastating” ever outbreak of bird flu in the past year, European health authorities said on Tuesday as experts study the feasibility of vaccinations. Between October 2021 and September 2022, around 2,500 outbreaks of bird flu were detected on farms in 37 European countries, the European Food Safety Authority, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the EU said. In that time “some 50 million birds were slaughtered” on affected farms, the EFSA reported.
– The EFSA said that “for the first time” there had been no marked separation between two epidemic waves, as the virus was not brought under control in the summer. This autumn, the epidemic was more virulent than last year at the same time, with the number of infected farms 35 percent higher. Winter Solstice 2022 – Everything you need to know about the shortest day of the year:
– The winter solstice is on Wednesday 21 December 2022. It marks the first day of astronomical winter, and the precise time of the solstice will be at 9:47pm GMT. This differs from meteorological winter, which always begins on 1 December, every year.
– There are two solstices every year, one in December and one in June.
– What is the winter solstice? The winter solstice is when the Sun reaches its lowest point in the sky, and here in the northern hemisphere, that results in the shortest day of the year. It’s not something that you can see, like a meteor shower or planet in opposition, but rather an event that occurs.
– The solstices (and the equinoxes) are the result of the interplay between Earth’s tilt and its orbit around the Sun. Full article: https://www.sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/winter-solstice-shortest-day-year/

RIP – Patricia Shaw 7/3/1945 – 18/12/2022:
– Patricia sadly passed away peacefully at home in Torrox Costa in the early hours of Sunday 18 December. We have not been able to easily access her contacts lists and I’m sure there are many people who read Digame who knew her through her two main passions of animal welfare and her interest and knowledge of Spanish history. I’m sure there are those who have been trying to contact her over the past couple of months and have wondered what has been happening, so I thought an announcement here would reach many of her friends and acquaintances. There will be no funeral service according to her wishes.

Explained- At least 91 convicted sex offenders have already benefited from the ‘only yes is yes’ law: {Translation, summary, with preface by Editor}
– Preface: The new law, passed without public preview of its contents, pushed thru Parliament in a rush by the progressive feminist movement, supposedly to enhance the freedom and safety of women, results in all these sex offenders getting early releases? Do the people that sponsored the law really support sentence reductions for male sex offenders? Or, is it unintended consequences of a poorly written, flawed document? Hard to say, but the regional courts are fast at work implementing it. Evidently it involves the addition of a new charge, “sexual assault”, which is less serious than the existing “sexual attack” crime. The former has shorter sentences than the latter. So now judges are reviewing cases to see if “attack” convictions should be reduced to “assault” status. From what I have read, if the victim didn’t tell the assailant to stop, or fight back if unable to speak, or was too inebriated to remember exactly what happened, or some other such circumstance, it may, possibly, not be considered an “attack” but only an “assault”, and these cases are now subject to judicial review and sentence reduction. -Ed.
– The number of convicted persons who have benefited from the new sentencing framework under the ‘only yes is yes’ law amounts to at least 91, including downward sentence reviews and subsequent sentences under the law. A total of 12 people have been released from prison. The last four reductions were announced on Monday and have taken place in three autonomous communities. With these new reductions, sources consulted by Europa Press confirm sentence revisions and sentence reductions in 15 autonomous communities. ANDALUCIA

Socialists Crash In Latest Polls: {Translation}
– Six months after the Andalusian elections, Juanma Moreno’s PP would maintain its absolute majority and the PSOE would hit electoral rock bottom, according to the barometer carried out by the Andalusian Studies Centre Foundation (Centra), known as the Andalusian CIS.
– The PP would be the most voted force with 42.3 percent of the votes. It would obtain between 56 and 58 deputies in the Andalusian Parliament. Moreno is the best-known politician (94.4% of those surveyed) and the most highly rated, with an average score of 5.95 points. The Minister of the Presidency, Antonio Sanz, welcomes the fact that “Andalusians continue to have broad confidence in Juanma Moreno’s government”.
– The Socialist PSOE, now with 30 seats, would drop to 22 or 23, with only 19.4% of the vote. According to the Andalusian CIS, only six out of ten of those surveyed even know Juan Espadas, leader of the PSOE in Andalusia, and give him a 4.34 rating.
– In third place is Vox, with 12.8% of the votes, equivalent to between 13 and 14 seats.
– Fourth place would go to Por Andalucía, which, with 11.9 per cent of the vote, would win between 12 and 13 representatives in the Andalusian Parliament. The seats that the PSOE would lose would be captured by the other parties of the left-wing coalition, according to this barometer. The leader of IU, Toni Valero, believes that this poll is “a symptom of a change that is taking place in the Andalusian electorate for the municipal elections”, suggesting that the left supporters still support the left, just not the current PSOE leaders.
– Lastly, Adelante Andalucía would achieve 5.4% of the support, which would mean between three and four seats.
– The survey, which has been reasonably accurate in recent years, was carried out between 21 November and 2 December among a sample of 3,600 people. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1149617/elpp-de-juanma-moreno-mantendria-su-mayoria-y-elpsoe-caeria-a-22-escanos/

What About The GREEN Agenda? – Andalusian government plans to boost the mining sector:
– The Junta de Andalucía wants to boost the mining industry as a driving force for economic development and employment in the region and has set up a committee to promote different projects and investments in the sector. The president of the committee, the Junta’s Minister for Industrial and Energy Policy, Jorge Paradela, said it will work to develop the transport, energy and hydraulic infrastructures needed for major mining projects, make the sector more international and attract foreign investment.
Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/mining-sector-boost-20221219173104-nt.html
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?
– Mining is the only major sector of the economy that is not sustainable. It uses up finite resources and, in turn, pollutes and destroys ecosystems.
– The adverse effects of mining are far-reaching and often irreversible. The process usually involves clearing large areas of land, which can damage natural habitats, cause deforestation, and lead to soil erosion. There is also evidence that mining causes global warming through excessive CO2 emissions, biodiversity loss, and accelerated erosion. It also poisons the land and water table with toxic chemicals and heavy metals, which leak into our drinking water supply. These pollutants can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and even death. As a result, it is critical to carefully consider the environmental impact of any proposed mining project.

La Viñuela reservoir gains almost 2.5 hectometres in a week after the latest rains and is up to 11%: {Translation, summary}
– The La Viñuela reservoir has gained 2.48 cubic hectometres of water in one week following the latest rains, and now stands at 11.01% of its total capacity. As of 19 December it accumulated 18.09 cubic hectometres compared to 15.61 last Monday. In any case, the region is still in a situation of exceptional drought, and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) does not expect any new rainfall for at least the next seven days.
– It was on 7 December when the reserves of the La Viñuela reservoir reached their historic minimum, with the reservoir at 9.16% of its total capacity and only 15.06 cubic hectometres of accumulated water. Since then it has gained 3.03 hectometres, although the curve of new inflows has remained flat in the last few hours, so that practically what the reservoir is gaining is being consumed. British Embassy issues update on driving licence exchange in Spain:
– The British Embassy in Madrid has issued an update on its negotiations with Spain, where British residents who were unable to exchange their UK licences for Spanish ones within the allotted time period are currently not permitted to drive. Posting on the Brits in Spain Facebook page, the message was as follows:
– “This is a brief update on progress towards driving licence exchange coming into force and some more information on what to expect once that happens.
– “The UK’s legal checks have now been completed and a final version is with Spain for agreement on their side. When the British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and Spanish Foreign Minister Albares met this week, they both agreed that we are close to completing this process. We will update again before the Christmas break and work with Spain will continue between Christmas and New Year.
– “In the meantime, here are provisional answers to some more of the questions you have been asking us”:
My UK licence has expired. Will I be able to exchange it without taking a test?
Yes. The text includes provision for expired licences to be accepted for exchange, provided they were valid at the time you began living in Spain. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/uk-driving-licence-exchange-20221219102917-nt.html

BONEHEAD AWARD

This Bonehead Award Goes to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for signing Spain’s new toy gender neutrality law:
– How much taxpayer money was wasted on this foolishness?
– Cars for girls, dolls for boys and no more pink and blue. For Spain’s left-wing government and the toy industry, it’s game over for gender stereotypes when it comes to the country’s littlest citizens.
– A pioneer in feminist initiatives, the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (pic) has pushed through several schemes to tackle gender-based violence as well as advancing equality and women’s rights. The horribly flawed “only yes means yes” law is another example of his logic-defying feminist initiatives; more than 90 sex offenders have been released (12) or had sentences heavily reduced (79) due to the poorly written law we were not allowed to see until it was passed just a few weeks ago!
– Under the new code of toy ethics, advertisements can no longer say a toy is for a particular gender, or designate pink for girls and blue for boys, which is deemed to reinforce outdated gender roles.
– Signed by the Spanish Association of Toy Manufacturers (AEFJ), which represents 90 percent of the industry in Spain, it took a year to draw up, said Rafael Escudero of the consumer affairs ministry.
– There are no sanctions for those who fail to comply, who only run a “reputational risk”, and major international brands are not affected. Thus the entire exercise was a waste of time and money, creating a law with no real effect, nothing but bonehead progressive virtue signaling.

EU countries agree gas price cap to contain energy crisis:

FDA Now Admits Pfizer Vaccine Linked To Blood Clots In Older Individuals:
– Researchers looked at data covering 17.4 million elderly Americans who received a total of 34.6 million vaccine doses between Dec. 10, 2020, and Jan. 16, 2022.

Your cat knows you’re talking to it, but does it understand you?:
Scientists are beginning to understand human-feline communication, but there’s still a long way to go. Although there are probably more, the vocal repertoire of the cat is wide, and up to 21 different vocalizations have been described in the scientific literature. The most popular vocalization for communicating with humans is the meow. Wild cats will meow on occasion to mark territory or attract a mate, but domesticated cats do it constantly when interacting with people. This is why scientists think that meowing may be a product of feline domestication and socialization with humans. Full article:

PRP eye drops: Does anyone use PRP eye drops, that is plasma rich platelets made from your blood. I realise this is a bit obscure but I need to know a source better than the one I have.
We live in Torrox campo and currently I have to travel to Malaga and it is the busiest part of the City where the cathedral is, very difficult nowhere to park and I have to wait an hour whilst they are prepared, this is necessary every month as I can only have two small bottles.
If anyone knows a laboratory able to do this process closer to home it would be a great help, Nerja, Velez or further but not right in the city centre.

Nothing Burger- Secret Inflation Fighting Initiative Promised By President Sanchez May Be A One-Time €300 Cheque To The 8 Million Poorest Families- Which Does NOTHING To Curb Inflation: {Translation, summary}
– In the last fortnight of 2022, the government faces the last major negotiation it will have this year: the extension of the decree of measures to deal with the consequences of the war in Ukraine – known as the social shield – beyond 31 December, the day on which the measures currently in force expire. The Executive, as confirmed this Saturday by President Pedro Sánchez, will approve this extension on 29 December, and is inclined to extend the bulk of the initiatives it has approved in recent months, although it will also limit others and include some new ones. Among the latter could be the launch of a cheque for around 300 euros to cover the rise in prices of the basic products in the shopping basket.
– This was revealed this Saturday by the Secretary General of Podemos and Minister for Social Rights, Ione Belarra, during her speech at the opening of the State Citizens’ Council of the purple party, its highest body between congresses. Belarra did not include too many details of a negotiation that, for now, is going along with a certain degree of harmony between the partners in government. But she did explain that this 300-euro voucher that UN Podemos is “negotiating with the PSOE” would benefit “around eight million households”, presumably limited by income in order to focus on those most affected by the rise in prices over the last year.
– The implementation of this cheque of 300 euros would represent a triumph of the purple thesis regarding the need for an economic injection for some families to cope with the shopping basket, although the initial proposal of Podemos – as detailed by the party last Monday – was for a voucher of up to 500 euros for those households that do not exceed 42,000 euros per year in income. “This payment, which would be received by both employed or self-employed people and beneficiaries of unemployment benefits and subsidies, would extend the direct aid approved in June and would help families to compensate for the rise in prices”, explained sources from Social Rights a few days ago. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/noticia/5085508/0/psoe-y-unidas-podemos-negocian-un-bono-de-300-euros-para-la-cesta-de-la-compra-y-ultiman-la-prorroga-del-escudo-social-para-2023/

ANDALUCIA

Andalucia Regional Government rejects the “insane drift” of Penal Code reform, attacks President Sanchez, not going to “remain silent in the face of this democratic outrage”: {Translation}
– The spokesman for the Andalusian government, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, has described the “absolutely insane drift” on the part of the government in relation to the reform of the Penal Code as “very serious”.
– Speaking to journalists before taking part in a flag ceremony in Almería, Fernández-Pacheco accused the government of Pedro Sánchez of crossing “red lines” that until now were “insurmountable for all those who were part of the great pact that we made in 1978 to forge the democracy that we enjoy today”.
– He stressed that judicial decisions “are there to be respected” and, after defending the separation of powers, he expressed his unease at the Government’s conversion of judges into “enemies”.
– In his opinion, “nobody understands” that the Penal Code can be modified “at the expense of the criminals themselves” because it is “in the interest” of the President of the Government. This modification “does not serve the general interest” or a “popular request or clamour from Spanish society”.
– “It only benefits Pedro Sánchez because his partners, the pro-independence Bildu and Esquerra Republicana, are the ones who keep him in power (…) I think we must return to common sense, common sense and a sense of state. Unfortunately, it seems that Pedro Sánchez is not the best person to steer this course”, he said.
– “If Pedro Sánchez has to undermine the separation of powers to stay in power, he will do so. There is no problem. If Pedro Sánchez has to negotiate the Penal Code at the expense of the criminals themselves, he does it. He has no problem”, he insisted.
– At the same time, he warned that the Andalusian government is not going to remain “impassive, it is not going to remain silent in the face of this democratic outrage that is the drift that the Spanish government has been taking in recent times”.
– According to Fernández-Pacheco, what is happening is something that not only worries the Junta de Andalucía, but also other regional governments and even socialists who previously supported Sanchez, including those of the PSOE, who are “beginning to say that enough is enough, that not everything goes”. “But unfortunately it is not all the regional leaders of the PSOE who are doing so. Here, in Andalusia, we have a good example; we have a PSOE-A with a leader, Juan Espadas, whose only thing that is clear to him is that he has to defend Pedro Sánchez at all costs”, he criticised. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1149340/la-junta-de-andalucia-lamenta-la-deriva-demencial-con-la-reforma-del-codigo-penal/

TORROX

The PSOE of Torrox criticises the economic management of the PP at the head of the town council- “We have a nefarious government”: {Translation}
– The secretary general of the PSOE of Torrox, Mari Nieves Ramírez, has criticised in a press release the economic management of the PP at the head of the town council. Firstly, the socialist councillor has criticised the fact that “a government with an absolute majority ends the year without drawing up the budget for the next financial year”. According to her, “we are in the second half of December and the Town Hall knows absolutely nothing about next year’s accounts” which, according to the councillor, “will mean that 2023 will begin with this year’s budget carried over”.
– Ramírez adds that the government of the mayor, Óscar Medina, “is like a student who does not prepare for exams and has to repeat a year”. The councillor maintains that “the PP has fulfilled almost nothing of what was included in the budget document for this year, not even the urgent amendments they made halfway through when they could see that they were going to spend the year without results”.
– The socialist spokeswoman added that “it is incomprehensible that a government with an absolute majority, which does not spend a single minute in reaching a consensus with anyone, has not been able to develop the actions they put in the chapter of investments that were going to be historic for the municipality but which have remained on paper”. She also points out that “the Museum of the Sea has disappeared again, the awnings for the schools are still waiting, the Rabitilla plot has not been bought and so on and so forth, a long list of non-compliances”.
– Nieves Ramírez goes on to state that “the PP prefers to continue to increase spending on staff who are hired at their whim, to continue with their strategy of political patronage, as they do in Civil Protection where they have increased spending by 50,000 euros more; without counting December they are already up to more than 255,000 euros, instead of implementing the projects that our municipality needs and the citizens of Torroxeña demand”.
– Finally, she went a step further in her criticism by assuring that “Torrox does not move forward because it has a nefarious government that understands that the Town Hall is simply a placement agency for friends and brothers”. GMail Admits Your Emails Are Not Fully Protected With Encryption, That Service Is Only Now Being Tested, And Only For Paid Business & Education Accounts:
– (Gmail lies about the security measures it provides, and admits they scan and save every email you send & receive. Why would anyone use this insecure, often-hacked email service when identity theft is at an all time high? Free email is NOT free, you pay with your data and personal, confidential info! -Ed.)
– Google on Friday announced that its client-side encryption for Gmail is in beta for Workspace and education customers as part of its efforts to secure emails sent using the web version of the platform.
– This development comes at a time when concerns about online privacy and data security are at an all-time high, making it a welcome change for users who value the protection of their personal data.
– To that end, Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Education Standard customers can apply to sign up for the beta version with encryption until January 20, 2023. It’s not available to personal Google Accounts. Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/12/gmail-encryption.html

SCAMS

Altered Photos Used To Blackmail Victims: {Translation, summary}
– The Guardia Civil has arrested four people in Almeria on charges of extorting money from Internet users with manipulated sex videos in which minors appeared.
– In these complaints, they denounced how the detainees asked victims to pay between 500 and 2,000 euros to not publish videos of sexual content in which they appeared with girls between five and nine years old.
– The investigators have detected that the sexual videos sent to the victims were manipulated. Initially, the originals corresponded to consensual online sexual contacts with adults, but when they reached the hands of the criminal organisation, these videos were manipulated by replacing the adults with a young girl.

RIP – Kim Simmonds & Dino Danelli – The world mourns passing of two ’60s rock pioneers who died mere days apart:
– Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown (guitar) and Dino Danelli of The Young Rascals (drums) have passed away within only days of each other.
– Kim Simmonds was a legend in blues from the U.K. who gained his fame in the U.S. when his band, Savoy Brown, arrived at the tail end of the ’60s British Invasion. He kept it that way, rocking with the likes of Rod Stewart and The Faces. Born in 1947 in a small town called Newbridge in South Wales, at the tender age of 18, he formed Savoy Brown in 1965 and remained its only original member.
– Dino Danelli was one of the founding members of The Young Rascals, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Born in 1944, he came out of New Jersey to polish his talents by playing around in New York, New Orleans, and Las Vegas before joining forces with Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish.

Say good-bye to dry, painful lips. Embrace soft ,silky skin of your body and hands with a natural glow.

SPAIN

Why Spain’s Catalonia celebrates Christmas with someone having a poo:
– Visit any Catalan home at Christmas and you may well find yourself lost as you gaze into the nativity scene or Belén. Joseph and Mary will be in pride of place around the manger next to baby Jesus, the three Kings will likely be in attendance too, along with a group of shepherds and a set of traditional farmyard animals.
– But look closer and you will spot a figure squatting with his or her pants down, bare bottom raised over a little brown pile of poo – glance up at the face and chances are it’s a face you recognise. This is “el caganer”, which can be roughly translated as ‘the crapper’, and believe it or not they’ve become big business for artisans in the northeastern region.
– Well, nobody really knows who the caganer’s inventor was, but historians believe the tradition could date back anywhere from the 18th century to the 14th century. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20201202/navidad-what-catalonia-celebrates-christmas-with-a-crapper/

Caminito del Rey reopened yesterday (Dec 16th) with a circular route that avoids the damaged section: Arrangements have been made for visitors to enter instead at the southern end of the path, which is normally the exit, and walk up and down the route as far as the damage before returning again. The revised visit will take in a less-used parallel tunnel as well and mean that 5.5km of the normally 6km route will be passable. Huge Berlin aquarium bursts, unleashing flood of devastation: A huge aquarium in Berlin burst, spilling debris, water and hundreds of tropical fish out of the AquaDom tourist attraction in the heart of the German capital early Friday. Police said parts of the building, which also contains a hotel, cafes and a chocolate store, were damaged as 1 million liters (264,000 gallons) of water poured from the aquarium shortly before 6 a.m. (0500 GMT). Berlin’s fire service said two people were slightly injured. The company that owns the AquaDom, Union Investment Real Estate, said in a statement Friday afternoon that the reasons for the incident were “still unclear.” Mayor Franziska Giffey said the tank had unleashed a “veritable tsunami” of water but the early morning timing had prevented far more injuries. Russia launches another major missile attack on Ukraine: Ukraine’s capital came under one of the biggest attacks of the war on Friday as Russia’s invading forces fired dozens of missiles across the country, triggering widespread emergency power outages, Ukrainian officials said. Gunfire from air defense systems and thudding explosions combined with the wail of air-raid sirens as the barrage targeted critical infrastructure in cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih and Zaporhizhzhia. ENERGY CRISIS

World’s coal use creeps to new high in 2022: Coal use across the world is set to reach a new record this year amid persistently high demand for the heavily polluting fossil fuel, the International Energy Agency said Friday. The Paris-based agency said in a new report that while coal use grew by only 1.2% in 2022, the increase pushed it to all all-time high of more than 8 billion metric tons, beating the previous record set in 2013. “The world’s coal consumption will remain at similar levels in the following years in the absence of stronger efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy,” the agency said, noting that “robust demand” in emerging Asian economies would offset declining use in mature markets. ‘Bad news ahead of the final’: Mystery illness afflicts France players at World Cup:
– Several France players have caught colds, the French Football Federation said, as the team prepares for the World Cup final against Argentina, with defenders Raphaël Varane and Ibrahima Konaté the latest to fall ill on Friday.
– Varane, Konaté and striker Kingsley Coman were all sidelined as Les Bleus were preparing to take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Sunday’s final. The trio of absentees sparked further fears of a mystery virus in the French camp after two players – midfielder Adrien Rabiot and defender Dayot Upamecano – were ruled out of the semi-final win over Morocco.
– But it’s not just some of the French players who are feeling unwell, FRANCE 24 sport journalist Romain Houeix said on the phone from Qatar. “A lot of the French journalists are in bad shape,” he said. “People have been coughing and feeling unwell for a week. We can’t say what it is; we’re working 15-hour days and we don’t have time to take tests”. “It’s my theory that those players have Covid,” Houeix continued. “In sport they tend to talk about sore throats when it’s possibly Covid and they haven’t been tested. Another theory is that it’s ‘camel flu’, a local virus.”

– A revised analysis of a horseman’s portrait found in southern Spain suggests he may have helped kill Publius Cornelius Scipio, the famous general who fought Hannibal in the Second Punic War
– A new study suggests the portrait is a representation of a North African horseman who fought in Cástulo, one of those whose spears mortally wounded Publius Cornelius in 211 BC, according to ancient sources. New Life Church: Whether you live in Nerja or are visiting our area, you are very welcome to come and join us at our Sunday gathering. Join us for a time of Holy Spirit led worship and experience the presence of our God. Our teaching is Bible based as we honour God and obey His Word. During this time of uncertainty, God’s Word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. Our service lasts for about 1 hour and 30 mins. With Tea and Coffee afterwards.
Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. John 14:6

El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page, or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).
