DoctorLaptop’s Tips #87, 05Feb21
How Does Your Internet Connection Measure Up?:
**Fixed Line- Fiber Optic / Phoneline / Cable**
Global Average
Download: 96.43Mb/s ; Upload: 52.31Mb/s ; Latency: 21ms
National Average in Spain, #14 in World
Download: 169Mb/s
Yes, you read that right. The average home computer user in Spain has an internet connection with a download speed that tests at 169Mb/s. Personally, I have a 500Mb/s Down&Up (asymmetrical) connection, and have been offered 1000Mb/s if I want it.
**Mobile Data Connection**
Global Average
Download: 47.20Mb/s ; Upload: 12.67Mb/s ; Latency: 36ms
National Average Spain, #36 in World
Download: 48.86Mb/s
Source: https://www.speedtest.net/global-index
Summary: In Spain, if your home internet download speed is less than 17Mb/s you are only getting 10% of the average Spanish internet speed. If this is your situation, you should not expect good performance from functions designed to use the connection speeds of an average consumer- streaming video, IPTV, group video chats, etc. In the rapidly developing tech world, you either keep up and enjoy the new benefits, or get left behind, limited to outdated content. This also explains why computers, tablets and smartphones go obsolete faster than they used to.
The Internet is much more complex than just a few years ago, and these new features and higher quality require ever faster connections to work correctly. While in 2010 you may have been thrilled at what you could do with a 2Mb/s connection, in comparison to your old 256Kb/s phone modem connection, that 2Mb/s is nothing by todays standards. But back then noone had access to the super high definition 4K video streams of today that expect you to have a 50Mb/s connection to work properly; the old low-res broadcast TV quality streams were all that there was, and it only needed a 2Mb/s connection. Thus, if you have a 20Mb/s connection today, yes it is 10x more than you had 10 yrs ago, but it is still very slow compared to average connections and what app developers expect users to have to watch todays videos or do large group chats.

Andalusia avoids exceeding the barrier of 5,000 cases of Covid despite a new increase in infections: {Full article, translated from https://sevilla.abc.es}
-Andalusia is experiencing an increase in coronavirus infections on Thursday, with 6,733 cases detected in 24 hours, a figure much higher than the 3,675 cases recorded a week ago, and which represents an average figure of the incidence of the last two weeks, the most critical phase of the third wave.
-Health reports 70 more deaths from Covid-19 in the community.
-Experts advising the Andalusian government consider that we may enter a stage of “sawtooths” in the statistics of contagions in which the incidence rises and falls in the coming days, as revealed in a tweet on Thursday by the president of the Junta de Andalucía. Juanma Moreno, who calls for “keeping our guard up”, believes that the peak of the third wave will be considered to have been passed when the number of infections falls steadily.
*Outbreaks*
-These infection figures bring the 14-day incidence rate to 900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, once again above the national average (815). Trackers continue to detect outbreaks despite the difficulty that this work now entails due to the rapid spread of infections. During the last week, 188 outbreaks have been declared, affecting a total of 1,229 cases. Currently, 380 active outbreaks of the disease are being monitored in Andalusia.
Below 5,000 admissions
-The best news is that, for the second consecutive day, the pressure of care has been reduced, at least in conventional hospitalisation. There are 4,867 patients admitted to Andalusian hospitals, 44 fewer than on Wednesday, of whom 709 occupy ICU beds, seven more than yesterday.
-The pressure is very high in hospitals in Cádiz, with 104 patients in ICU, while Granada and Seville have 120 and 121 critical patients in their centres.
Vaccination
-As of 3 February, 117,960 people have been immunised in Andalusia, having received both doses of the vaccine. A total of 345,810 doses have been administered.
-In terms of positives cured, the statistic today totals 2,411, a figure still lower than the daily number of infections. Spain’s health minister guarantees the arrival of 6.8 million Covid vaccines by April: Minister of Health Carolina Darias has told the autonomous regions that Spain already has a firm commitment from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca that no fewer than 6,797,185 doses will arrive in the country by spring.
The Ministry of Health had been expected to announce its likely decision to not to vaccinate those over 65 years of age with the AstraZeneca formula, but it finally postponed this announcement to this Thursday for “technical reasons”.
However, Darias confirmed that those over 80 years of age will only receive the vaccines that use messenger RNA technology, which of those approved so far, are the vaccines of Pfizer and Moderna. After effects of the Pfizer COVID vaccine: Since the roll out of the vaccines in the UK, we’ve been asking everyone who gets vaccinated to log their jab, so that we can understand more about the impact of the new COVID-19 vaccines and their effects. So far, more than 275,000 people have logged their vaccinations in the app, many of them healthcare workers.
The researchers asked for feedback, via an app, from people who had received at least one dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by early January.
The Zoe app team from King’s College London found:
-37% experienced some local “after-effects”, such as pain or swelling near the site of the injection, after their first dose, rising to about 45% of the 10,000 who had received two doses
-14% had at least one whole-body (systemic) after-effect – such as fever, aches or chills – within seven days of the first dose, rising to about 22% after the second dose
-These after-effects resolved within a few days.

Coronavirus variant detected in South Africa is already circulating in Spain: The first case of local contagion of this more-infectious mutation has been found in Barcelona, after random testing was carried out on positive cases. Spain currently has very low capacity to carry out such genetic sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
On Tuesday, the Spanish Cabinet approved the first restrictions on arrivals from South Africa and Brazil, two countries where a more infectious variant is circulating. Denmark and Norway become latest countries to recommend AstraZeneca jab for under-65s only: Medical regulators in both countries said more evidence about the vaccine’s effectiveness among older people is needed before it can be safely recommended to them. A Norwegian health official said: ‘It’s not because the vaccine doesn’t work on those who are older, but because its documented effect is so limited for this age group.’ Full article: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9223727/Denmark-latest-country-recommend-AstraZeneca-jab-65s-only.html

Hackers build fake version of WhatsApp to extract sensitive info from iPhone users: WhatsApp has, yet again, found itself in the middle of a privacy row. A recent report has stated that hackers had made a fake version of WhatsApp to collect sensitive information from iPhone users.
A website with domain config5-dati[.]com was telling iPhone users to download the fake WhatsApp app which was not actually a mobile application but a configuration file for the iPhone. The fake app was purposefully designed to extract personal and sensitive data of users.
This serious breach of sensitive information has been acknowledged by WhatsApp. “To help keep chats safe, we recommend that people download WhatsApp from the app store for their phone’s platform. In addition, we may temporarily ban people using modified WhatsApp clients we detect to help encourage people to download WhatsApp from an authoritative source,” the WhatsApp spokesperson added. WhatsApp Plus or GB WhatsApp User Alert- WhatsApp will delete the accounts of users of “unofficial” apps: WhatsApp has begun to “temporarily” suspend the accounts of users who use its messaging service through third-party apps, such as WhatsApp Plus or GB WhatsApp. The veto also extends to those applications developed by third parties “that claim to be able to move your WhatsApp chats from one phone to another”, explained the company owned by Facebook, which ensures that the decision is based on “it is not possible to validate their security practices “. Wolf hunting will be prohibited in all Spain: Hunting the Wolf will be definitively prohibited throughout the Spanish territory after the agreement reached this Thursday at the meeting of the State Commission for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity. The wolf, already protected south of the Duero, is still hunted through quotas in Castilla y León, Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia, where communities have expressed their disagreement with the agreement. Normally these signs have a reopening date, but none did. Even Richi’s Pollo Asador Cafe has an open ended holiday sign posted. Naythan, Torrox Costa.

Those long-delayed deliveries: I posted last week about a delivery from the UK in early December that has failed to arrive here. We’d been misled that it was “lost” in transit but we discovered that delivery was actually stopped on instructions from the UK Government and the couriers were told that they had to return thousands of affected packages. Yesterday UK Customs informed delivery companies that they will not require any additional information concerning contents, thus allowing them to start sending the stuff back. Obviously that will take some time. In our case we expect redelivery from the UK to Spain to follow, but it will now require us to pay customs duty, handling charges and probably a new delivery fee. No doubt others will be in the same situation. James, Archez jamesdotmcculloch10@gmaildotcom

Spain rules out the AstraZeneca vaccine for at least those over 80 years of age: What is not yet known is whether the vaccine will AstraZeneca be given to people over 65 years of age . The Public Health Commission, which has dealt with the issue on Wednesday, has postponed the decision to Thursday. At least seven European countries have decided that they will only apply this drug to those under that age, since there is not enough evidence of efficacy for those who exceed it. Despite this, the United Kingdom is prodding the elderly with this vaccine since tests do show that they generate antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.
It is foreseeable that Spain will make the same decision as countries such as France, Italy, Poland or Germany, as Fernando Simón, director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), pointed out on Monday: “It is possible that in the European Union we have to follow the recommendation that Germany is making [the first country that announced that it would reserve it for those under 65], it is prudent, but in order to decide it, the paper has to analyze the technical data sheet of the vaccine “.

Spain Health postpones to tomorrow deciding whether or not to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to people over 65: The Ministry of Health has not yet decided whether or not it deviates from the majority line of the European Union, which would be to choose to recommend the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical AstraZeneca only to those under 65 years of age. It is the decision that France, Germany, Poland, Austria, Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands have already taken. Oxford and AstraZeneca do not have public data on the efficacy of their vaccine in those over 65, because the trials were not done with a sufficient population sample. It is the reason why these European countries opt for this option, unlike the United Kingdom, which is administering it. Switzerland REFUSES to approve AstraZeneca jab and says ‘new studies’ are needed after France, Germany and Sweden rejected it for over-65s: Switzerland has refused to approve the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine, with regulators raising concerns over insufficient test data and arguing ‘new studies’ are needed.
It comes after France, Sweden and Germany advised against administering the jab to those over 65 and Emmanuel Macron claimed it was ‘almost ineffective’ for the age bracket.
That is despite Oxford data published this week suggesting the jab is 76 per cent effective after just one dose, and may also prevent 67 per cent of infection. Full article: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9219909/Switzerland-REFUSES-approve-AstraZeneca-jab-says-new-studies-needed.html

Poland limits AstraZeneca vaccine to people aged 18-60: Poland will use the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine only for people aged 18-60, the Polish prime minister’s top aide Michal Dworczyk said on Tuesday, following a recommendation from the country’s medical council. Restrictions For 14 Days In Andalucia’s High-Rate Municipalities:
The president of the Andalucian Community, Juanma Moreno, has insisted that all communities subject to closure orders due to their high rate of cumulative incidences will remain restricted for a total of 14 days, regardless if their numbers drop. His announcement comes after an appeal from Malaga City that restrictions be lifted after the capital once again dipped below 1,000 Covid cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Perimeter closures have also been enforced in Velez-Malaga.

Salobreña Reopens its Borders as Covid Figures Fall: Mayor Rufino said: “This reopening does not mean that we can let our guard down.”
Salobreña’s figures currently stand at 431.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, but cases could easily rise to more than 500 per 100,000 people once again, forcing the town to close its borders for another two weeks.
Seven other municipalities will also drop their border controls after Covid levels dropped, inlcuding Campotejar, Dilar, Durcal, Juviles, Salar, Turon and Velez de Benaudalla.

Spain to use big data to track if high earners are lying about residency: The Spanish government’s latest bulletin describes how its tax and tariffs plan for 2021 will have as one of its priorities reinforcing the tracking of these wealthy individuals who should be paying taxes in Spain.
Tax authorities will use a number of software programmes that collect big data and can ascertain whether a person spends more than 183 days a year in Spain, based on where they sign into their social media accounts, where they go to the doctor, where they use their credit cards and other data available to them.
Spain’s Hacienda agency will also factor in where the main base of the taxpayer’s earnings is and check the activity of their direct family relatives.
A number of Spanish celebrities, from former tennis player Arantxa Sánchez Vicario to opera singer Montserrat Caballé, are known to have moved their fiscal residence and fortunes to Andorra. It is not illegal to take up residency in the Pyrenean microstate, but the ease with which high earners have up until now been able to live there on paper whilst actually residing in Spain has spurred the government to up its game. Google’s Chrome & Microsoft’s Edge Browsers Hacked Again- 28 Extensions Caught Hijacking Google Search Results for Millions:
New details have emerged about a vast network of rogue extensions for Chrome and Edge browsers that were found to hijack clicks to links in search results pages to arbitrary URLs, including phishing sites and ads.
The 28 extensions in question, including Video Downloader for Facebook, Vimeo Video Downloader, Instagram Story Downloader, VK Unblock, made use of a sneaky trick to mask its true purpose. This JavaScript malware amassed birth dates, email addresses, geolocation, and device activity, with a specific focus on collecting the data from Google.
All the backdoored browser add-ons have been taken down by Google and Microsoft as of December 18, 2020, to prevent more users from downloading them from the official stores.

The BOJA publishes the new municipalities with perimeter closures in Andalusia from Wednesday 3 February: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 02/02/2021 18:57
-The Junta de Andalucía has published the extraordinary BOJA with the new list of municipalities that will close their perimeter from Wednesday 3 February after exceeding the barrier of 500 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants.
-In this way, the Andalusian Government will extend the perimeter closure to 541 municipalities in the community with an incidence rate of the coronavirus higher than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, including the eight provincial capitals, according to the order published on Tuesday.
-For 302 of these 541 municipalities, the Junta will also order the closure of all non-essential activities for exceeding 1,000 Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. The perimeter closure currently affects 541 Andalusian municipalities and the prohibition of all non-essential activity in 272, but the evolution of the coronavirus in Andalusia is rapidly adding new additions to this list of restrictions.
The Official Gazette of the Andalusian Regional Government published on Tuesday 2 February contains the complete list of municipalities that will adopt these special restriction measures from 00.00 hours on Wednesday 3 February.
Thus, the new towns that are confined perimeter are:
-Almería: Berja, Senés
-Cádiz: Barbate, Puerto de Santa María (El), Puerto Serrano
-Córdoba: Aguilar de la Frontera, Bujalance, Pedro Abad, Priego de Córdoba, Puente Genil
-Granada: Aldeire, Beas de Guadix, Dehesas Viejas, Galera, Güevéjar, Morelábor, Torrenueva Costa
-Huelva: Almonaster la Real, Almonte, Chucena, Jabugo, Lucena del Puerto, Niebla, Paterna del Campo, Valverde del Camino
-Jaén: Andújar, Cambil, Chilluévar, Pozo Alcón, Santa Elena
-Málaga: Benaoján, Cómpeta, Gaucín, Guaro, Jubrique
-Sevilla: Badolatosa, Campana (La), Coripe, Coronil (El), Guadalcanal, Marchena, Martín de la Jara, Montellano, Navas de la Concepción (Las), Palomares del Río, Paradas, Pilas, Rubio (El),
Villamanrique de la Condesa, Villanueva del Río y Minas
-These restriction measures in Andalusia are due to the epidemiological situation in the region. The community has 3,795 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, less than on Monday (4,286) and about a thousand less than last Tuesday (4,751), according to data from the Andalusian Institute of Cartography and Statistics (IECA), which counts 105 deaths, a new pandemic record after beating the previous record of 95 on 10 November.
-Of the 107 deaths recorded, Almeria is the province with the most deaths with 26, followed by Malaga with 18, Jaen with 15, Cadiz with 14, Granada and Seville with 13 each, Cordoba with ten and Huelva with only two.
-Andalusia has 3,795 cases after 4,286 on Monday, 7,892 on Sunday, 7,899 on Saturday – the pandemic record – and 7,759 on Friday. On Thursday there were fewer, 3,676, on Wednesday 6,626 and last Tuesday 4,751.
-The province of Malaga is the highest with 912, followed by Cadiz with 728, Seville with 705, Almeria with 568, Cordoba with 353, Huelva with 205, Jaen with 180 and Granada with 144.
Source, Spanish, with the full BOJA posted: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-medidas-coronavirus-andalucia-boja-publica-nuevos-municipios-cierre-perimetral-andalucia-desde-miercoles-3-febrero-202102021833_noticia.html

Andalucía records its worst daily death toll of the entire pandemic:
It is a black day for Andalucía this Tuesday, 2 February. The region has recorded the highest number of deaths in a 24-hour period during the entire coronavirus pandemic. The 106 deaths registered today exceed the 95 on 10 November. Almeria is the province with the most deaths with 26, followed by Malaga with 18, Jaén (15), Cadiz with 14, Granada and Seville with 13 each, Cordoba with ten and Huelva with two. Andalucía studies mass vaccination plan for people over 80 in stadiums or conference centres: The regional government also proposes that mobile units take the vaccination roll-out for the elderly to rural areas and people with mobility problems be vaccinated in their homes. The Andalusian health system has the capacity to inject up to 350,000 doses of the vaccine weekly if that amount arrives, but this Monday only 85,850 vaccines arrived in the region. Full article: http://www.surinenglish.com/local/202102/02/andalucia-studies-mass-vaccination-20210202125244.html

How are delays in vaccine deliveries really affecting Spain’s campaign?: At the current rate, it would take years to vaccinate the entire population of Spain against Covid-19. This assertion, which is being touted by a number of political leaders in the country, is true. But it doesn’t provide any information that we haven’t already known for more than a month now. Barring a few deviations from the plan, this was the expected speed for the early stage of the campaign.
By this last week, 1,837,700 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were due to have arrived, which is 68,645 more than were received. That’s to say, there was a 3.8% shortfall. The majority of the vaccines that are being administered in this phase are from Pfizer; just 35,700 of the total are from Moderna.

COVID- England and Wales record second highest weekly coronavirus deaths since pandemic began: Deaths involving COVID-19 accounted for 45.1% of all deaths in England and Wales in the week to 22 January. Questions and answers about the new maternity supplement of pensions of 378 euros per year per child: The Government has approved this Tuesday the new maternity pension supplement, of a fixed amount of 378 euros per year per child. Its objective is to reduce the gender gap in the benefits received by men and women, which now stands at 30% on average. The approved mechanism substantially modifies the maternity supplement in force so far, approved by the Government of Rajoy and that the European justice considered that discriminated against men. Government approves 9-month moratoriums for mortgages, loans and tourism and transportation: The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday to extend the coverage of mortgage and consumer loan defaults to nine months for vulnerable people, the self-employed and companies in the tourism and transport sectors, while it has extended until March 30 the deadline to request such postponements.
As reported by the Government spokesman, María Jesús Montero, after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, these measures complement the rest of the initiatives already approved to alleviate the effects of the coronavirus.
The moratorium on mortgage loans may be requested by those who pay fees for their habitual residence or for a place where their business is being developed, as well as for a rental home that has ceased to receive the rents of the tenant during the state of alarm.
The moratorium will also apply to vulnerable people who are facing consumer loans or any other type of financing with periodic installments. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/the-government-approves-9-month-moratoriums-for-mortgages-loans-and-tourism-and-transportation/

{Translations by Firefox browser extension “Translate Web Pages”}

For some reason today’s translations were particularly difficult. All the good Spanish writers must have had the day off. Yet I must push on, so here we go. In any case, for a full list of towns with municipal closures and non-essential business closures see http://www.surinenglish.com/national/202102/01/junta-lifts-coronavirus-perimeter-20210201093646.html

Towns with municipal closure or with non-essential activity closed due to Covid-19 as of Wednesday, February 3: {Summary of article translated from https://sevilla.abc.es}
Updated: 01/02/2021 20:43
(Note: This rambling article from a usually reliable source, despite having the latest updates, is composed very poorly; it is extremely confusing and poorly organized even in the original Spanish. So I just did my best to pull out the relevant info. I have included other articles below that may be easier to read. -Ed.)
-The perimeter closure currently affects 539 municipalities in Andalusia and the prohibition of all non-essential activity in 272.
-Andalusia as a whole has increased its incidence rate of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days over the weekend to 952.2, which is 61 points more than that registered in the Friday -the weekend is not updated-, which was 891.2. By provinces, Almería is in the lead with 1,190.9. Huelva is behind with 1,127.1; Cádiz with 1,027; Malaga with 1,007.2; Granada with 963.5; Córdoba with 907.5; Jaén with 823.6, and Seville with 776.7.
-The highest rate per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days among the provincial capitals is still recorded by Almería, with 1,391.3, followed by Malaga, with 1,008, the only ones that exceed a thousand. They are followed by Cádiz (991), Huelva (967.1), Granada (919.8), Jaén (887.7), Córdoba (878.7) and Seville (693.2).
-Of the other four Andalusian municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, three exceed the limit of 1,000 cases -Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) with 1,007, Dos Hermanas (Seville) with 1,117.4 and Marbella (Málaga) with 1,258.5-, while the fourth, Algeciras (Cádiz) with 734.5, is still between 500 and 1,000 cases.
-Granada: the province with the highest number of municipalities affected with restrictions is Granada with 123, which adds eight new ones since Wednesday for having a rate higher than 500. Son Albondón, Aldeire, Beas de Guadix, Galera, Güevéjar, Quéntar, Torrenueva y Cortes and Graena. The case of the latter, Cortes and Graena stands out, since the lifting of the restrictions had been decreed this Monday, but on Wednesday it will return to exceed 500 cases again.
In addition, 14 municipalities that had more than 500 cases now exceed 1,000 and non-essential activity will also be closed. They are Albolote, Albuñol, Benamaurel, Calicasas, Darro, Dehesas de Guadix, Dehesas Viejas, Dollar, Dúdar, Huéscar, La Peza, Montefrío, Morelábor and Puebla de don Fadrique.
-Malaga: Registers 74 municipalities with a rate above 500 (municipal restrictions) after adding Cómpeta and Guaro, as well as Gaucín, which abandoned the restrictions on Monday, but once again had a rate above 500, so they will be applied again this Wednesday. Specifically, 32 will have a perimeter closure and 42 will also have suspension of non-essential activity, adding Casares, Ojén, Benaoján, Cortes de la Frontera, Genalguacil and Jubrique.
Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-restricciones-coronavirus-andalucia-lista-completa-pueblos-cerrados-o-sin-actividad-covid-19-partir-miercoles-3-febrero-202102012043_noticia.html

The seven Malaga municipalities facing non-essential business closures from this Wednesday: Malaga, Casares, Ojén, Benaoján, Cortes de la Frontera, Genalguacil and Jubrique have exceeded an incidence rate of a thousand cases for every one hundred thousand inhabitants and will have to shut all their non-essential businesses from the early hours of Wednesday morning. This measure will last for at least two weeks, until 17 February. Full article: http://www.surinenglish.com/local/202102/01/seven-malaga-municipalities-facing-20210201132856.html

Towns reopening after municipal restrictions lifted: (Note: I try to avoid EWN as a news source, but in this case the info appears accurate, and it is the easiest read I could find today. -Ed.) Ministry of Health has announced on Monday, February 1, that a total of 31 municipalities have dropped their cumulative incidence rate enough to open back up their borders.
Granada: Albuñuelas, Benalúa de las Villas, Colomera, Cortes and Graena, Dehesas de Guadix, Fornes, Moraleda de Zafayona, Morelábor, Pórtugos, Quéntar and El Valle.
Jaén: Santiago de Calatrava, Fuerte del Rey, Torres, Santisteban del Puerto, Pozo Alcón and Villatorres.
Almeria: Huécija and María.
Córdoba: Cañete de las Torres and Valsequillo.
Huelva: Aroche, Castaño del Robledo, Chucena and Corteconcepción.
Málaga: Canillas de Albaida, Gaucín, Salares and Sayalonga.
Sevilla: Lora de Estepa and Umbrete.

Firefox User Alert- Firefox VPN being pushed on Firefox users is NOT a true VPN, it is only a proxy:
Short version- Skip it, it is not what they say it is.
Long version- Mozilla is now offering a browser-based proxy which they are calling Firefox Private Network. Despite the name, this is only a browser proxy; it is not a VPN (virtual private network). Unlike Firefox Private Network, a true VPN will offer complete encryption for all traffic on your operating system, a proxy does not. A proxy only redirects your traffic thru a private server to mask your location.
-Browser-only encryption: Only traffic through the Firefox browser is getting encrypted. All traffic from programs and apps (Mail, Skype, torrents, etc.) outside of your Firefox browser remain exposed.
-Data collection (logs): All traffic is being routed through Cloudflare, which has partnered with Mozilla to offer this service. Cloudflare will be logging your IP address and all the sites you visit and searches you do. Mozilla is also recording technical, interaction, and registration data.
-No location selection: Unlike other browser-based proxies, Firefox Private Network (VPN) does not offer any location selection.
Reference: https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/reviews/firefox-vpn-private-network/
Bottom line: If you want a VPN, and you should, pay for a proper, full featured VPN, from a company that specializes in VPNs. You can get Windscribe Pro VPN for less than €4/month. Recommended by DoctorLaptop and DigameXtra readers! DigameXtra will receive a modest donation from Windscribe, but only if you make your purchase thru this link. https://windscribe.com/?friend=txw1s6ld

Spain performs its first anal tests to detect Covid: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es}
-Since the news broke that China began to perform anal tests to find Covid-19, they have been the protagonists of countless “memes.” Some still believe that this is fake news – but it is not. In fact, these tests are already carried out in Spain, specifically in Galicia. This has been confirmed by the Galician Radio and Television Corporation, according to “El Correo” today.
-This type of diagnosis began to be carried out last week in Beijing and Qingdao, according to the official press. Scientists cited by the local media ensured them it’s more accurate than a sampling swabs inserted through the nose -the PCR-, the saliva or blood.
-It is more effective in infected people. China applies them to risk subjects, travelers arriving from abroad and tourists in quarantine in hotels, mainly. And they have proven to be very effective. ” They increase the detection rate of infected people ” because the coronavirus remains longer in the anus than in the respiratory tract, explained Dr. Li Tongzeng, from You’an Hospital in Beijing. But its use is not without controversy.
-There are many voices that have raised the cry in the sky and many more look at them with suspicion. On Chinese Twitter (Weibo) there are even testimonies from people who have gone through the experience that some describe as “not painful, but humiliating “. “I have had two anal examinations. In the process, they also took a swab from my throat. Each time, I was afraid that the nurse would forget to change the swab between the two of them, “they joked on the social network. Another detail that has emerged is that the process takes “about 10 seconds” for each swab. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/sociedad/abci-espana-realiza-primeros-test-anales-para-detectar-covid-202102011325_noticia.html?ref=https:%2F%2Fsevilla.abc.es%2F

How long should a laptop last- shrinking expected lifespans?: Different factors will determine how long your laptop computer will last before it becomes unusable or obsolete. The first among these factors is your computers hardware. Laptops with quality hardware last longer when compared to lower quality ones.
-Usually, the very first thing that breaks is the keyboard. Users often use external keyboards until the can get it fixed or replaced.
-Laptops could also be rendered obsolete because of outdated processors or graphics cards that cannot run new system updates. Technology today is progressing at a rapid pace, with new components and parts being introduced to the market on an almost daily basis. When these components get outdated, the computers that rely on them instantly become irrelevant or unusable for advanced tasks.
-The next factor here is how you use the laptop. A typical computer will last longer when it is treated with a lot of care. If you don’t use and maintain your laptop well, then it won’t last you long.
-Basically, the more you pay, the longer its lifespan should be:
-If you pay less than $600/700, you should expect it to stay for 2-4 years.
-Laptops that cost between $700 to $1,000 last an average of around 3-5 years.
-If you spend more than $1,000, you should expect it to last for around 4-7 years.
-The tasks that the computer performs on a daily basis also plays a role in determining its lifespan. Heavy tasks like gaming, graphic design and video editing will take their toll, making your laptop perform optimally for only a few years. Limiting use to lighter tasks like emailing, watching videos and web browsing will allow laptops to last longer. They could even last much longer than average if this is all you do with them and if you treat them well with annual professional maintenance servicing.
-Therefore, the kind of hardware inside the laptop, how you use it and what you use it for will all work together to affect its lifespan. For example, a mid-range machine should probably last you 4-5 years, but it could also last for a year or two depending on its daily functions.

The man who played possibly the most famous guitar riff of all time has died- The Animals’ guitarist Hilton Valentine: The Animals’ guitarist Hilton Valentine, best known for the iconic opening riff on the English rock band’s arrangement of “The House of the Rising Sun,” has died at the age of 77.

FYI: “House of Rising Sun” was said to have been known by miners in 1905. The oldest published version of the lyrics is that printed by Robert Winslow Gordon in 1925, in a column “Old Songs That Men Have Sung” in Adventure magazine. The lyrics of that version begin:
“There is a house in New Orleans, it’s called the Rising Sun.
It’s been the ruin of many poor girl,
Great God, and I for one.”
The oldest known recording of the song, under the title “Rising Sun Blues”, is by Appalachian artists Clarence “Tom” Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933 on the Vocalion label. Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley. In 1941, Woody Guthrie recorded a version. Read more at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_House_of_the_Rising_Sun

Delivery Problems Since Brexit- Why post to and from the UK is more expensive and packages get stuck in Customs: Most of us were aware that Brexit was going to affect importation and exportation businesses, but what about the consequences for individual people?
One of the main issues that many UK residents in Spain have already noticed are the high taxes, which must be paid on sending and receiving packages to and from the UK and Spain.
The taxes imposed occur whether you are ordering goods from the UK, if you send a package to the UK, or if friends and family in the UK send you a package in Spain. Typically, you have to pay the fees before you’re allowed to pick the item up at the post, delivery office or online. Spain to introduce coronavirus testing at airports to ease travel:
Airport operator Aena plan to set up Covid-19 testing centres in departure lounges at airports across Spain in a bid to ease travel.
These are: Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche, Valencia, Sevilla, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, Tenerife Sur, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, César Manrique-Lanzarote and La Palma.
The diagnostic facilities will provide quick PCR, antigenic and serological tests to detect both active infections and the presence of COVID-19 antibodies, and will have isolation areas for travellers awaiting their results.
But the service won’t be available for those arriving in Spain from high risk countries and those travellers will continue to need to show negative test results before they can travel. The new debate in Spain- should medical-grade face masks be mandatory?: I’m surprised that no-one has mentioned this, but some FFP2 masks (such as this one), have an exhalation valve allowing unfiltered breath to go out. This type of mask will only protect the wearer. They are designed for medical professionals and vulnerable individuals in high-risk situations, and not recommended for Covid-19 or any anti-viral use in public places, unless with another mask underneath.
I hope this doesn’t confuse an already complicated situation!

BOJA that extends the Covid measures in Andalusia until February 15 published: {Summary, translated from https://sevilla.abc.es}
Updated: 01/30/2021 20:11
-The situation in Andalusia continues to be worrying. As much as it seems that the community had reached the peak of the third wave of the coronavirus, the Board is still very aware of the evolution, which forces them to continue imposing restrictions to reduce infections, hospitalizations and deaths. For this reason, the Government led by Juanma Moreno has decided to extend the current Covid measures another fifteen days in Andalusia for, as confirmed by the BOJA published this Saturday, January 30, since they lost their validity on Sunday, the 31st of this month. See BOJA announcement .
And it is that in recent dates all the records of the pandemic in Andalusia have been broken for the worse, to which must be added the uncertainty that exists among the experts regarding how the going to act new strains of the coronavirus are, like the British. The Board believed that it had reached the stabilization of the third wave and, therefore, the moment at which the curve enters the so-called “plateau”, but the data on Friday were again very worrying and generated another peak of infections, hospitalizations and deaths.
Thus, the current Covid measures will remain in Andalusia until 11:59 p.m. on February 14, as can be read in the BOJA. With this, the Board seeks to produce not only this long-awaited stabilization of the curve, but also the beginning of the decline, since the measures imposed for this are quite restrictive and should take effect now. Even so, due to the existing concern, Juanma Moreno again asked this Friday that the Andalusians stay at home during the weekend and only have contact with the narrowest family nucleus. Andalucía asks permission to confine and advance the curfew, again: {Summary, translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/30/2021 20:11
The Minister of the Presidency, Public Administration and the Interior, Elías Bendodo, has demanded this Saturday the Government of Spain modify the decree of the state of alarm so that the autonomous communities can advance the curfew and establish home confinements, since they are fighting against the advance of the coronavirus “with one arm tied behind his back.”
“We want the Government, if it decides to continue looking the other way in this third wave, to leave us to the communities . We are willing to assume the wear and tear, but they have to give us the tools to bring about the advance of the curfew or specific confinements based on the multiplication of cases, “he insisted. Ecologists denounce the construction of new Velez-Malaga reservoir over ‘illegalities’ and ‘potential risks’: They have raised concerns over “the illegality and potential risks of a reservoir for agricultural irrigation” that is being built on a farm in the centre of Chilches. President of GENA, Rafael Yus, said in a statement that a series of earthworks with heavy machinery have been taking place since last December on said farm, “supposedly destined for the cultivation of mangoes.” PHOTO:EWN/GENA. WhatsApp now requires biometric authentication before allowing PC and web access: You’ll now have to confirm your identity using your biometric information to link a WhatsApp account to the PC or the web. The Facebook owned company has added a layer of protection to its apps in order to limit the chances of somebody else linking to your account without your knowledge or permission. As long as the phone you’re using has face or fingerprint unlock switched on, WhatsApp will ask you to go through the authentication process when you link your account to the service’s desktop app or web version.
After the service verifies your identity, you’ll then have to scan a QR code with your phone. The new biometric authentication feature is active by default, and the only way not to trigger it when linking your account is to completely switch off face or fingerprint unlock.

WhatsApp Exploit Spreading New Android Malware: A newly discovered Android malware has been found to propagate itself through WhatsApp messages to your contacts in order to expand what appears to be an adware campaign.
“This malware spreads via victim’s WhatsApp by automatically replying to any received WhatsApp message notification with a link to a malicious Huawei Mobile app,” ESET researcher Lukas Stefanko said.
The link to the fake Huawei Mobile app, upon clicking, redirects users to a lookalike Google Play Store website.
Once installed, the wormable app prompts victims to grant it notification access, which is then abused to carry out the wormable attack.
This development once again underscores the need to stick to trusted sources to download third-party apps, verify if an app is indeed built by a genuine developer, and carefully scrutinize app permissions before installation.
But the fact the campaign cleverly banks on the trust associated with WhatsApp contacts implies even these countermeasures may not be enough. There are no known fixes available as of now.
Stefanko said the exact mechanism behind how it finds its way to the initial set of directly infected victims is not clear; however, it’s to be noted the wormable malware can potentially expand from a few devices to many others incredibly quickly.

I have not heard from the organizers this week to confirm if it remains closed, but with all the new municipal restrictions I would be surprised if they were reopening next week. Lost deliveries UK to Spain: In relation to missing parcels I would like to warn anyone thinking of using the services of (name removed to comply with online anti-defamation laws) in the UK.
I had a parcel collected by arrangement with (removed) and the company which was engaged to collect was (removed). Full tracking was promised.
I had tracking as far as collection then nothing further.
After 2weeks I contacted (removed) and reported the non-delivery. I was informed that an investigation would take place. I received no further communication.
After 3 weeks I again contacted them and I was informed that it was lost and because there was no insurance the case was closed.
I wrote to them again and received no acknowledgment of the e mail which I sent.
I have had issues with the company in the past when they broke some articles and refused to pay any compensation stating articles not covered.
I was not made aware that I needed to take out insurance in case they lost the parcel.
There appears therefore to be no way forward.
Box still lost.

What are mini PCs?: A mini PC combines the performance of a good laptop with the upgradability of a full-size desktop computer together in a package the size of a paperback book. Mini PCs are fast enough for anything other than high-end gaming, and unlike some laptops, they include all the ports you need to connect multiple monitors in 4K/HD, and your favourite wired or wireless keyboard and mouse.
As I reported some time ago, I have been testing a few different makes and models. Many mini PC manufacturers were previously in the TV box business, so their names may not be familiar to you like major computer makers would be. The logic is if they made good TV boxes, then their mini PCs should also be high quality. A few of the computer companies do make mini PCs, but other than Apple’s extremely expensive mini PC, these are not widely distributed, more a special-order item. However, for several years now, they are have been very popular in corporate workstations. And now the public is catching on as prices drop amid the new demand.
I have decided to go with mini PCs by a company called Minis Forum and will be selling both new and used ones from time to time. I have a demo model hooked up at my workshop feeding 2 large displays, 50inch for movies and 24inch for internet, running at the same time with no stuttering or overheating! It is really quite impressive how new tech and miniaturization now provide us with these very affordable, fully functioning computers in such a small, convenient package.
No more worry about spills on your laptop keyboard, or finding a laptop in your preferred language. External keyboards are cheap and easily available in different languages. Tight for space? These mini PCs come with mounting hardware that allows it to be mounted on the rear of many flat screen displays, or on a wall or bookshelf.
More details when I post specific models for sale starting tomorrow. -DoctorLaptop.

Contagions double in 24 hours and break the downward trend of the third wave in Andalusia: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/29/2021 20:29
-There is no truce. The timid indications that the most acute phase of infections of the third wave of coronavirus in Andalusia had been overcome have disappeared this Friday with the registration of 7,759 new infections in 24 hours, twice as many as the previous day.
-The community adds another this Friday 90 deaths from the pandemic and increases its incidence rate to 891 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days, similar to the national average, with Almería (1,133) and Huelva (1,062) as provinces with the highest incidence depending on of its population and Seville as the province with the best record, with 707 cases. The seven-day incidence rate (384), however, is still less than half that of two weeks ago.
*Hospitalized*
-Meanwhile, the is increasing healthcare pressure in Andalusian hospitals where a total of 4,500 covid patients are already being treated , 183 more than on Thursday. This is a figure never before reached in the pandemic. With this level of occupancy of Covid beds, the number of resources provided in the contingency plan activated two weeks ago by the Ministry of Health, which this Tuesday activated the following plan in anticipation of a ceiling of assistance of 7,500 coronavirus patients, breaks.
-Of the total number of beds occupied, 654 correspond to critical patients in Units Intensive Care , which have registered an increase in occupancy of 30 admissions in 24 hours.
-According to data from the Ministry of Health , the percentage of occupation of conventional hospital beds by covid patients is 25.6 percent, while that of ICU beds is close to 36 percent. Both records are at limits very high health alert. The new debate in Spain: should medical-grade face masks be mandatory?: One year on, non-medical face masks continue to be allowed, even though health experts say they are not safe, given what is now known about how the virus is spread, and the emergence of new, more contagious strains, such as the B.1.1.7 variant detected in the United Kingdom. But if FFP2 masks – theoretically the most effective at stopping the virus – were mandatory, it is not likely that there would be sufficient capacity to produce this level of supply, according to the Association of Personal Protective Equipment Companies (Asepal).
Other countries are already cracking down on non-medical masks on the grounds that they do not provide enough protection from the virus. France issued a decree last Thursday banning certain homemade masks from being worn in public. Under the decree, only three types of masks are recommended: surgical, the FFP2 and fabric masks made to category 1 standards, which filter at least 90% of three-micrometer particles. In Germany, residents cannot enter closed spaces, such as supermarkets and offices, with fabric masks. Only FFP2 and KN95, both considered personal protective equipment (PPE), and blue surgical masks, which filter more than 90% of particles, are allowed. In Bavaria, FFP2 masks have been mandatory since last Monday.
While surgical masks can be bought for €0.15, PPE masks cost at least €2. Given that they are only effective for eight hours of use, an individual would have to spend €60 a month if they needed to use one a day.

France closes its borders to non-EU countries: French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Friday night that the country would shut its borders to arrivals from outside the EU, warning of a “great risk” from the new variants of Covid-19.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said goods would continue to flow across the Channel despite the new measures. Full article:

EU u-turns on invoking Northern Ireland safeguard mechanism: Today’s (29 January) Commission announcement on a temporary transparency and authorization mechanism on vaccines backfired when it became clear that it could potentially trigger the safeguarding mechanism (Article 16) of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
The realization that the European Commission had invoked the article to avoid vaccines being routed through Northern Ireland to Great Britain, should an export restriction be imposed – however unlikely – provoked strong reactions from politicians in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK.
Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to trigger article 16 in retaliation. In a video message Foster claimed that the EU was trying to block the supply of a vaccine into the United Kingdom and “in one fell swoop” had reintroduced a hard border. Andalusia exceeds the peak of the third wave of coronavirus adding 82 deaths: {Translated from https://sevilla.abc.es} Updated: 01/28/2021 20:39
-Since the beginning of January it has registered 3,477 new patients or, in other words, in a single month it has multiplied by five the number of people who need health care due to the pandemic. From 900 hospitalized patients that were registered on January 2, to the 4,417 that there are this Thursday, 624 of them in the ICU.
-However, based on the data, there appears to be a slowdown in hospitalization for coronavirus. Thus, Andalusia has been recording less than 150 new hospitalized for two days. They are still very high figures but the previous ten days had more than 200 daily entries.
This data seems to point to the theory that the community would already be past the peak of the third wave , which would fall timidly. It is something that can be seen in the infections and the incidence rate, which is moderating and now also in hospitalized patients.
ICU and dead, very high
-However now the focus is on ICUs and the dead. Due to the evolution of the pandemic, it is to be expected that those continue to rise as those who require intensive care and, later, the deceased will skyrocket.
-Meanwhile, infections do experience a notable drop this Thursday. There are 3,676 new infections that the Board has notified, which is almost half that of yesterday Wednesday and, more importantly, the best Thursday in two weeks. Normally this day there is usually a rise in cases and reflects the general state of the pandemic. Thus, those fewer than 4,000 positives would indicate that, indeed, the third wave has already reached its peak.
-The bad news is in the deceased, who have added another 82. Andalusia remains for the third day above 80 deaths and, in just three days it has added 249 fatalities.
-A reflection of the contention of the third wave is that the cumulative incidence (AI) already drops significantly. This Thursday marks 877 compared to 915 yesterday . It is a decline that marks a new trend in the pandemic and seems to relax somewhat the rhythm of the third wave, which would have already passed the peak. German Panel Advises Against AstraZeneca Jab For Over-65s: Germany’s vaccine commission said Thursday it could not recommend the use of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine for older people, the latest twist in a row over the jab that has put Britain and the EU on a collision course.
The panel of scientific experts, called STIKO, said the vaccine should only be given to people aged 18 to 65 years old as “there is currently insufficient data to assess the efficacy of the vaccine for persons aged 65 years and older”.
AstraZeneca and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson immediately defended the jabs, which have already been widely used in Britain on older people.
AstraZeneca’s vaccine has not been granted approval yet for general use in the European Union. But the bloc’s medicines regulator EMA is poised to authorise it on Friday. Full article: https://www.ibtimes.com/german-panel-advises-against-astrazeneca-jab-over-65s-3132764

Bison Whisperers Wanted- bison rangers for woodland in the Garden of England: Conservationists in England are looking for the country’s first ever rangers to look after European bison, Europe’s largest land mammal, which is being introduced to Kent more than 15,000 years after its ancestors roamed the landscape.
The ideal applicant would need to understand animal behaviour, he said, but they were not expected to have worked with bison before, “because you can’t until now”. If not a stampede, there has certainly been a rush of applicants for the two jobs.
The bison, which will come from the Netherlands, Romania or Poland, will be kept in a near wild state, he said, helping to manage the woodland by their unique ability to fell trees by rubbing up against them and eating the bark, creating space for other species to thrive. Facebook beatdown- oversight board overrules company on most censorship cases in first test: Deciding its first-ever cases, Facebook Inc’s oversight board ruled on Thursday that the social media company was wrong to remove four of five pieces of content the board reviewed, including posts Facebook took down for violating rules on hate speech and harmful COVID-19 misinformation.
Facebook said it would abide by the board’s decisions. The group, which was created by Facebook in response to criticism of the way it treats problematic content, also called for the company to be clearer about its rules on what is allowed on its platforms. Apple CEO Tim Cook rails against ‘purveyors of fake news’ as Facebook feud rages on: Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the virtual stage of the Computers, Privacy, and Data Protection (CPDP) conference on Thursday, attacking social media sites for allowing the spread of misinformation – an apparent barb aimed at Facebook (FB), though he didn’t mention its name.
In his speech, Cook laid into algorithm-driven social media platforms, painting them as, “An interconnected ecosystem of companies and data brokers, of purveyors of fake news and peddlers of division, of trackers and hucksters just looking to make a quick buck.”
Cook’s appearance followed Apple’s announcement that it will soon launch a controversial privacy feature that gives users the ability to stop apps from tracking their activity to collect information for advertisers. The feature could hurt Facebook and other apps that benefit from targeted advertising dollars. China Begins Using Anal Swabs To Detect COVID-19 Cases!?!: Some Chinese cities are using samples taken from the anus to detect potential COVID-19 infections as China steps up screening to make sure no potential carrier of the new coronavirus is missed amid regional outbreaks and ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays.
Anal swabs require inserting a cotton swab 3 to 5 centimetres (1.2 to 2.0 inch) into the anus and gently rotating it. Last week, a Beijing city official said that anal swabs were taken from over 1,000 teachers, staffers and students at a primary school in the city after an infection had been found. Their nose and throat swabs and serum samples were also collected for testing. PHOTO: ChinaProctologyUnion. “Lost” deliveries from the UK: Our experience may explain the problems to which Naythan has referred. A package including winter clothes that we had sent from the UK in December has been listed as “lost” by the booking agent and the carrier for the whole of January. “Customer services” encouraged us to accept that it was never going to be delivered and to make a claim against the included insurance, but this would be honoured only for new items where we could produce the purchase receipt. We escalated it and it was found that the box is in a depot in Koln, Germany – where it has been since its delivery to Spain was stopped. The UK Government requires that it, along with other items that were in transit in December, is returned to the UK but have provided no instructions to the couriers as to the customs and other requirements that will have to be met. So it along with thousands of other failed deliveries remains in limbo whilst we shiver. James, Archez jamesdotmcculloch10@gmaildotcom

Moreno- ‘We do not have enough vaccines … we won’t even reach 14 per cent of the population before the summer’: The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has claimed this Wednesday that the region is not receiving enough doses to reach the vaccination goal of 70 per cent of the population by the summer.
Moreno said, during a visit to a children’s hospital in Seville, “We do not have enough vaccines and at this rate we will not even reach 14 per cent of the population before summer.” Full article: http://www.surinenglish.com/national/202101/27/moreno-have-enough-vaccines-20210127175443.html

Earthquakes Update: A series of earthquakes shook Granada province, in southern Spain, on Tuesday night.
The first two were felt at 9.36pm in Santa Fe and in Chauchina, near the city of Granada, with registered magnitudes of 4.3 and 4.1 on the Richter scale, according to provisional estimates by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
According to the IGN, a total of around 10 quakes with magnitudes above 2.9 were felt clearly between 9.36pm and 10.18pm in the city of Granada and its metropolitan area, which is home to around half a million people.
The Tuesday tremors come on top of a series of quakes to have recently hit the Granada area. There have been over 100 in the last 10 days, the most powerful of which took place last Saturday, when a magnitude 4.4 quake was felt in Santa Fe, just a few kilometers from the city of Granada, causing some damage to homes and other buildings. UK imposes hotel quarantine for travellers from COVID-19 hotspots: The UK today announced people arriving home from 22 “high risk” countries will have to undergo a 10-day hotel quarantine at their own expense — taking a leaf out of Australia’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic — as the country tightens border controls to try to curb one of the world’s worst COVID-19 outbreaks.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the tougher new rules would apply to travellers from “red list countries where we have particular concern about new variants.”
Non-UK residents will be refused entry, while British citizens and permanent residents will be picked up straight from the airport and transferred to government-provided accommodation where they will begin their mandatory stay.
The announcement came a day after the UK yesterday reached the grim milestone of 100,000 coronavirus deaths — the first country in Europe to do so.
Johnson also said that travellers will be questioned as to their purpose for travel.
“I want to make clear that under the stay-at-home regulations it is illegal to leave home to travel abroad for leisure purposes and we will enforce this at ports and airports by asking people why they are leaving and instructing them to return home if they do not have a valid reason to travel,” he said.
UK Home Secretary Priti Patel later announced that people wishing to travel out of the UK will have to first make a declaration proving that their journey is essential.
It comes on top of the January 18 announcement that all travellers entering the UK, including British citizens, must present a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Prior to that date, the borders had been open with no test requirements.
The full list of 22 “red list” countries is still to be announced, but will include South Africa, Portugal and South American nations.
The new policy might take weeks to come into effect, as the new accommodations are not yet ready. References: https://www.9news.com.au/world/uk-imposes-hotel-quarantine-for-travellers-from-covid-19-hotspots/0e710a7c-1008-4c59-92fd-edaf15a6eeb6

Boris Johnson effectively extends UK coronavirus lockdown after delaying school reopenings: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson effectively extended a national coronavirus lockdown on Wednesday after ruling out a return to school for most students until at least March 8. The lockdown initially went into effect on Jan. 5 and was set to last through at least mid-February in an effort to combat a variant of the coronavirus that was rapidly spreading in the region.
But Johnson told lawmakers on Wednesday that the U.K. remains in a “perilous situation” with more than 37,000 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, nearly double the number during the country’s previous peak in April.
Johnson said the return date for students depends on the progress of vaccinating those in the four most vulnerable groups with their first dose by Feb. 15, and that he will release a “roadmap” for the “gradual and phased” easing of coronavirus restriction the week of Feb. 22. Merck discontinues work on Covid-19 vaccine candidates: Merck officials said the decision followed a review of phase-I clinical studies of its vaccine candidates. The data, the company said, showed the experimental vaccines were generally well tolerated, but the immune responses generated were inferior to those seen following natural infection and those reported for other Covid-19 vaccines. Fauci said it is ‘common sense’ to wear 2 masks to stop the spread of COVID-19: “If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,” Fauci said on NBC News’ TODAY. “That’s the reason why you see people either double masking or doing a version of an N-95.”
The type of mask you double up on will affect the level of protection it provides. For example, it’s better to use a double-layered cloth mask for the outside layer and a disposable surgical mask for the inside, rather than using two single-layered masks together. Light magnitude 4.2 quake hits 11 km southwest of Granada, Spain late at night: IGN reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Spain near Granada, Andalusia. The earthquake hit late at night on Tuesday 26 January 2021 at 10:54 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Santafé (pop. 15,400) located 4 km from the epicenter, Armilla (pop. 21,400) 9 km away, Atarfe (pop. 15,400) 9 km away, Maracena (pop. 20,800) 10 km away, Albolote (pop. 17,100) 11 km away, and Granada (pop. 234,300) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. (Granada has had at least 3 other smaller earthquakes and some aftershocks in the past 2 days. -Ed.)
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jaén (pop. 116,600) located 69 km from the epicenter, and Malaga (pop. 568,300) 78 km away. iPhone News- The iOS 14.4 update is here, your iPhone’s camera and Bluetooth will get some sweet upgrades: Apple has released the new iOS 14.4 update on Tuesday. It’s not as significant as the iOS 14.3 update, but iOS 14.4 comes with improvements that iPhone and iPad users will appreciate, including camera app tweaks and Bluetooth advancements.
The iOS 14.4 update has increased the iPhone and iPad’s ability to “read” smaller QR codes, boosting the camera app’s QR code recognition.
Another update users will appreciate is the camera app’s ability to identify foreign components. In other words, if you get any of the iPhone 12 models repaired, and the repair technician uses non-Apple components to fix the camera (or parts repurposed from another iPhone 12 variant), you will receive a notification that says the device is “unable to be verified as a new, genuine Apple camera.” Full article: https://www.laptopmag.com/news/the-ios-144-update-is-here-your-iphones-camera-and-bluetooth-will-get-some-sweet-upgrades

EU citizens offered financial incentives to leave UK: From 1 January EU citizens have quietly been added to the government’s voluntary returns scheme where financial support is offered as an encouragement to return to their country of origin.
Payments can include flights and up to £2,000 resettlement money. The scheme is designed to help some migrants in the UK to leave voluntarily.
People working to help vulnerable EU citizens in the UK said the offer of money to return home contradicted the government’s claim that it was doing everything it could to encourage people to register for settled status. The deadline for Europeans living in the UK to apply for the EU settlement scheme (EUSS) is 30 June. Full article:
