The Gran Senda de la Axarquía incorporates 200 hidden objects in the game of ‘geocaching’: {Translation} – The Gran Senda de La Axarquia, in the province of Malaga, has incorporated in its four stages some two hundred hidden objects to be located by ‘geocaching’, a game of search for hidden ‘treasures’ in the open air, in the manner of a treasure hunt. – The Diputación has some 200 active ‘caches’ or objects placed along these three hiking routes which the participants have to discover in this game. It is, therefore, a fun way to explore natural areas and to be in contact with other people with similar interests. – Geocaching is a magnificent resource for promoting the natural environment of the province through the Gran Senda and, at the same time, for those who play this game, who are increasingly numerous and come from different provinces, to get to know the inland villages. Geocaching began as a hobby for a group of specialists in geopositioning technology and is now a game that is played worldwide and has around three million followers. – To be able to play the game you need a GPS receiver {either a dedicated GPS device or a GPS app on your smart phone/tablet. Laptops would work but are inconvenient when hiking.} – Those who want to participate and play must first register at http://www.geocaching.com and download the Geocaching application through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. From there, you can have the necessary information to find the objects depending on the difficulty of location. – Before the stages in the Axarquia region, the Copper Forest and the Gran Senda de la Sierra de las Nieves in the province of Malaga had already been incorporated into this game. Nerja & Maro Fiestas de la Cruz de Mayo- Arropia (honey candy) and wine from the land at the municipal crosses of Nerja and Maro: {Translation, summary} – The Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo, which will take place on Friday 3 May and celebrates its 40th anniversary. This year there will be a total of 12 crosses, two of them municipal. One of the municipal crosses will be located on the Paseo Balcón de Europa, and will be made by the Reyes Magos Association, and the other at the Home and Social Centre of Maro, which will be made by the Marocueva Association for the Elderly. In both there will be local wine and tastings of arropia. – The Balcón de Europa (Nerja) Cross will feature performances by the Choir of the Centre for Active Participation, the Narixa Choir, the Peña Nerjeña Choir, the Angela Muñoz Group, the Mirabras Association Group, the Acompasarte Academy, and the Nerja and Maro Choirs and Dances. – At the Cross of Maro performances will be from José Fernández, the Group of the Association of Las Protegidas, the Alboreá Academy and the Dance Academy of Christian David Callejón. Water Restrictions Update:Over the weekend I spoke with people in Torrox & Torrox Costa who no longer get their water supply cut each night. My water is now available all night, but at a lower pressure 11pm-7am. I have not seen any official announcements on this topic. -Ed.

Ukraine’s top general says troops fall back as fighting worsens on eastern front: – Russia’s troops have gone back on the offensive this year, capitalising on an advantage in manpower and arms to press forward, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region. “The situation at the front has worsened,” Oleksandr Syrsky, (Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces), said in a Facebook post Sunday. He said Ukrainian troops had “retreated” to new defensive lines further to the west in some areas, conceding the loss of territory to the advancing Russians. “The enemy has concentrated its main efforts in several sectors, creating a significant advantage in forces and means,” he said. – Russia had secured “tactical successes in some sectors,” he admitted. Russia’s defence ministry earlier on Sunday claimed its troops had captured the village of Novobakhmutivka in the eastern Donetsk region – around 10 kilometres (6 miles) north of Avdiivka, which it captured in February. – Kyiv’s forces are outnumbered across the battlefield, with the country struggling to recruit enough soldiers to replace those who have been killed, wounded or exhausted by the war, now in its third year. UK border force staff to strike at Heathrow from Monday: – Border Force staff at Britain’s busiest airport, Heathrow, will go on strike for four days from Monday, in protest over changes to their working conditions. – The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union said more than 300 members of staff would stop working early on Monday in terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. – A separate union, Unite, has said its workers will go on strike at Heathrow from May 7 to May 13 over plans to outsource hundreds of roles. – Heathrow has previously said it has contingency plans in place for any strike action, and can avoid any impact to passenger journeys. Torrox celebrates the XXIV Children and Youth Folklore Festival coinciding with the May Crosses: Saturday, 4 May. The preliminary route of the folklore festival will begin at around 19:30 hours from the Plaza San Roque with the accompaniment of the groups from Fregenal de la Sierra until reaching the Plaza Picasso, where the first performances are scheduled for around 20:00 hours in the Plaza Picasso in Torrox. Axarquia mayors want to fill the swimming pools with non-potable water from wells: {Translation, summary} – The 22 mayors of this region met last Tuesday to decide on the measures to be taken against the drought. They want to look for ways to be able to fill the swimming pools. In this meeting in the Mancomunidad de La Axarquía, the councillors agreed to request that the filling of the private pools be done with non-drinking water from wells. Jorge Martín, president of the Mancomunidad, explained to ABC that this water undergoes purification and chlorination processes that make it suitable for recreational use. – “We can look for ways, companies that can supply it. Beaches along Costa del Sol – Nerja to Manilva – will benefit from new sand & upgrades: – According to the plans, there will be work along the entire coastline, which covers some 169 kilometres and 14 municipalities (Nerja, Torrox, Algarrobo, Vélez-Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria, Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva and Casares). Work will involve contributions of new sand; demolition of old structures such as pipes, walls or breakwaters; dune regeneration; collection of contributions from rivers and other environments such as quarries or harbour channels. – This is a different plan to the annual work to deal with storm emergencies, which involved an investment of 2.2 and 1.3 million euros respectively over the past two financial years.The project is promoted by the secretary of state for the environment and has European funding, and is linked to the recovery, transformation and resilience plan. The US quietly shipped long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine: – The United States in recent weeks secretly shipped long-range missiles to Ukraine for use in its battle to fight off Russian invaders, and Ukraine has now used them twice, a U.S. official said on Wednesday. – The missiles were contained in a $300 million military aid package for Ukraine that U.S. President Joe Biden approved on March 12, said the U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. John Lennon’s lost 1960s acoustic guitar to go up for auction: – A previously lost 12-string acoustic guitar {pic} that belonged to the late John Lennon will go up for sale at an auction in May after it was recently found in the attic of a home in Britain. – The auctioneers said Lennon played the guitar, which is expected to exceed its estimate of $600,000 to $800,000, on the Beatles’ 1965 album “Help!”. – The guitar was lying in an attic and was rediscovered by the current owners during a house move. – The founders of U.S.-based Julien’s Auctions said they travelled to Britain to verify the guitar and found the original case – a Maton Australian-made guitar case – in the trash. Martin Nolan, executive director and co-founder of Julien’s Auctions, told Reuters the owners knew they had the instrument at one point, but thought it had been lost. The guitar is believed to have ended up in their hands through British musician Gordon Waller, a member of the 1960s pop duo Peter and Gordon. “Gordon was gifted it from John Lennon, then Gordon gifted it to his road manager, and that’s where the guitar stayed for all these years,” Nolan said. The three winners from Málaga in the Championship of the Best Cheeses in Spain 2024, one of them a first place: {Translation} – There were up to four cheeses from Malaga that aspire to be the best cheese in Spain in 2024 during the final of this 14th edition of the Championship of the Best Cheeses of Spain 2024 of Salón Gourmets that took place this Monday at its facilities, and three of them have won prizes, one of them the best in its category. – Flor del Torcal de Campyserr, from Antequera, has won third place in the raw milk cured goat category of the Championship of the Best Cheeses of Spain 2024; the same position went to another cheese from Antequera, Briqueta de Cabraline, which won bronze in the category Soft Paste: Mouldy rind. – But the one that really reigned supreme, proclaiming itself the best cheese in Spain in its category was Corazón de Pistacho from Quesos Santa María del Cerro, from Villanueva de La Concepción, which won gold in the Con condimentos en su interior (With seasoning inside) category. The only Malaga cheese that reached the final and did not finish in the top three positions was El Pinsapo Semicurado al vino Pedro Ximénez from the Agammasur cooperative, from Colmenar, which was in the category Young goat pasteurised milk. – For this edition, a total of 900 cheeses from all over Spain were entered in the 20 different categories. In the final sieve, after two qualifying rounds, only 100 cheeses were selected, including the four Malaga cheeses mentioned above. There were 20 judges who determined the final positions of the 60 cheeses that appeared in the top 3 of each of the 20 categories after evaluating such important aspects as the rind, colour, texture, smell, flavour, aftertaste and persistence of each of the samples. – Corazón de Pistacho {pic, left}, the cheese awarded first place by Quesos Santa María del Cerro, is a “soft paste with an edible rind with white and grey moulds native to the area” which gives “each cheese its own personality and pistachio and honey interior, providing a perfect pairing”. Chemical-resistant cockroaches invade much of Spain: – According to Jorge Galván, director general of the National Association of Environmental Health Companies (Anecpla), some types of cockroaches have had a “random genetic alteration” making them resistant “to certain types of biocides”. – Galván explained that this can “happen with any species” but in this case it is making it more complicated to stop cockroach infestations. “If we treat with a biocide and there are resistant cockroaches, these are the ones that will survive and procreate. That is why pest management is so important because it allows us to make a specific diagnosis, apply a treatment and then make changes if necessary,” explains Galván. “If we have a specific problem at home we can use an insecticide but without abusing them. Andalusia rejects a “unilateral” agreement of the Government with the Canary Islands on the distribution of migrant minors: {Translation, summary} – The Andalusian regional government has expressed its rejection on Tuesday of the possibility of the central government reaching a “unilateral” agreement with the Canary Islands government on the distribution of migrant minors. – At the press conference following the meeting of the Governing Council, the spokesman for the Andalusian government, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, insisted that “agreements that affect us all should be reached with everyone”. Thus, the average price of 13.45 euros per litre recorded in April represents an increase of 4.1%. – Among the prices of the 30 oils collected by Facua, the most expensive product is the litre of Carbonell brand extra virgin arbequina and hojiblanca at Hipercor (El Corte Inglés), where it costs 15.99 euros. – The rise has been more pronounced in five-litre carafes of extra virgin olive oil, with an average price of 56.50 euros in January compared to 59.37 euros in April, an increase of 5.1%. The most expensive five-litre carafe among those analysed by Facua is Maestros de Hojiblanca, on sale in Hipercor for 65.89 euros. – Facua has reminded that it is “still waiting” for a report from the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, which has not concluded its investigation into increases in margins on foods with reduced VAT (such as olive oil), a practice prohibited since this tax reduction came into force in January 2023. Plaza de España in Nerja hosts Resident’s Day next Sunday: {Translation} – Next Sunday, 28th April, the Plaza de España will host the 22nd edition of the Nerja Residents’ Day. An event that promotes coexistence between citizens of different nationalities residing in the municipality, and which has been presented by the councillor responsible for Residents, Ana María Muñoz. – The councillor indicated that an extensive programme of events has been prepared which will begin at 12 noon with a concert by the Nerja Music Band. The Romería de Torre del Mar: Sunday, 28 April – Friday 26/4, the proclamation will be at the peña at around 20:30. From there, the Virgin will take to the streets in a procession with singing and dancing to the sound of drummers and music. At around 21:00 we will leave for Paseo de Larios for the traditional floral offering, which we encourage everyone to participate with their offering. This year the colours of the flowers will be purple and white. Afterwards, the opening speech will be given by Toñi Martín, presented by her brother. We will also hand out diplomas and return to the peña at the end. – On Saturday we will be at the headquarters of the Peña Círculo 81 at around 16:30 hours arranging the wagon of the Virgin, anyone who wants to come and see how it is made and how it is decorated can do so, and even participate. – As for Sunday, the day of the pilgrimage, the president of Circulo 81 reported that “at 08:00 hours we will leave from the headquarters of Circulo 81 in the direction of the Parish of San Andrés, where at 08:30 the pilgrimage mass will take place, which will again be led by the group Mediterráneo. Then we will leave at approximately 09:45 hours towards the Paseo Marítimo in the direction of Calle Duque de Ahumada, where we will have the pilgrimage breakfast. From there we will go to Calle del Mar, where we will pray the Angelus and then go to the Chapel of the Melosas, where we will make a floral offering to the Virgen del Carmen”. – The arrival at the pilgrimage site, next to Río Seco, will be at around 13:45 hours, “where we will once again have a paella, an equestrian show and a performance by the group Amigos de Gines (15:30). The festival will take place this Saturday 27 April in the square of the Tenencia de Alcaldía of El Trapiche. The day will start at 11.00 a.m. with the inauguration of the stands selling typical local products. At 2 p.m. it will be time for music with the group A-Compás. At 2.30 p.m. there will be a tasting of the typical ‘trapicheño’ dish with ‘papas a lo pobre’, chorizo sausage and ‘huevos gritos’, all cooked with firewood and at affordable prices. At 4.30 p.m., it will be the turn of the presentation of the poster for the fiesta of San Isidro and the Romería 2024, which on this occasion has been created by Rafael Jiménez with the work ‘Amor, amor’. At 17:00 it will be the turn of Tamara Jerez. At 19:00, the group A-Compás will perform again. And at 21.00 hours, until the end of the festival, the group NEXO. The traditional auction of fresh produce will also be held, where attendees can recall how vegetables and fruit used to be sold in the old days in the markets.

The waiting time for surgery increases in all hospitals in Malaga: {Translation, summary} – Waiting lists continue to give no good news. Despite the plans put in place by the Andalusian regional government to halt their rise, they continue to soar. The data published this Monday by the Andalusian Health Service (SAS), corresponding to last December, reflect a considerable increase in the average waiting times in all public hospitals in the province of Malaga and point to an increase in the number of patients who have been waiting more than a year for an operation. Specifically, there are a total of 31,980 people waiting to go into the operating theatre, of whom 5,243 have been waiting more than 365 days for an operation. On average, according to the December figures, a Malaga resident has to wait almost five months to be operated on, although this can be as long as eight months if the operation is at the Regional Hospital. – In the case of outpatient consultations, the data published by the SAS are not encouraging either. In fact, the province of Malaga is the worst placed in comparison with the rest of Andalusia. In total, in Malaga there are 219,855 people waiting for a first appointment with a specialist, compared to 168,586 in Seville, the next highest in the ranking. Of these, 133,458 have been waiting for more than two months, with an average delay of more than four months (132 days). – In terms of specialities, the longest list as of December 2023 was for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, which totalled 40,274 patients between the six hospitals in the province. The one with the most patients is the Regional (14,075), followed by the Costa del Sol (12,359), Clínico (8,572), Axarquia (2,461), Antequera (1,944) and Ronda (863). Waiting times range from four to seven months, depending on the health centre. – Other specialities with exorbitant waiting lists are Ophthalmology (21,996), Neurology (15,941), Otorhinolaryngology (12,246) and Gynaecology (13,297). – The Junta has released these figures after the Ministry of Health reported on them last Tuesday, when it detailed the overall situation of all the autonomous communities. In that ranking, Andalusia did not fare very well. The number of patients awaiting surgery rose by 6.5% from June to December 2023 and, likewise, delays in consultations rose by 3.7%. Thus, up to the end of last year, 205,005 Andalusians were waiting for surgery. Fire bug in Nerja- nine containers burn at dawn: {Translation} – A night of upheaval in Nerja with the burning of nine rubbish and recycling containers in two areas. Fortunately, the fires have ended without personal injury, only material damage. The rapid action of the members of the Provincial Fire Consortium prevented the flames from spreading to nearby homes and cars. The first warning came at around 4.00 a.m. this morning in Calle Almuñécar, near the Parador de Turismo in Nerja. After smothering the flames it was found that up to four rubbish containers located in the vicinity of this central street of Nerja were on fire. The second warning occurred at 6.30 am in the street Vía Romana, in the vicinity of the urbanisations Capistrano and Fuente del Badén. As a result of the fire, five other containers were burnt. DoctorLaptop’s Tips #109 The Dangers of “Software as a Service” Apps (SaaS) & Cloud Hacking – Identity Theft Without Accessing Your Devices: – This article uses the term “identity” in 2 distinctly different ways. One, identity as in your personal documentation, as used in the phrase “identity theft”. Secondly, identity as in the profile that apps create for you allowing you to access their services. So, you have your own identity, and your apps have an “identity” (profile) of you. Hope that’s clear. – Apps often rely on “cloud” based data “processing & storage” facilities, operated by third parties, to provide you a data related service, such as Spotify, YouTube, Office 365, etc. Thus it’s called software-as-a-service (SaaS). – Apps all create an “identity” profile of each user with login credentials, user info & preferences, and history. This “identity” is attached to your data streams, acting as a pass-key, allowing access to the services the app provides. – This exposes users to new risks, as their “identity” passes thru far more locations than before cloud storage existed. And it’s not just “the cloud”. There are many inter-linked cloud systems your data may bounce around as it is processed and delivered. Your data flow on an app or SaaS is this: User login and input from device>Internet Provider #1>App host services & their network of partners>Internet Provider #2>Cloud Data Storage… And back again to provide you the data/service as requested. – Each step has risks of exposure, and most of this risk is not even on your device. Your data and everything in your app identity (profile) can be stolen at any step in its trail. – Most computer users and businesses have a security gap when it comes to identity-based attacks. This is because the controls around identity security are typically focused on securing devices as opposed to your larger identity exposure as it relates to cloud apps and services. – The Internet has become so complex that is very difficult for individuals to combat these cloud threats. Large companies employ full time security teams and still get hacked regularly. – The best defence for individuals is as follows: – Use a premium, not free, VPN. Use a password protected PDF file for even more security if you are concerned with anyone snooping while you are away. – Do not share passwords across multiple accounts, and change your passwords annually. In practice, longer passwords, even if only letters, is more protection than a complex but shorter password including numbers & symbols. Tickets for first flights from Granada to Amsterdam go on sale at reduced prices: – Dutch airline Transavia has started selling tickets for the first flights between Granada’s Federico García Lorca Airport and Amsterdam that will begin 30 September this year. – Ticket prices start at 79 euros one way and the route will operate two days a week, on Mondays and Fridays. This reduced price will remain in place until 21 October, when it will go up to between 123 to 172 euros for a one-way ticket. Housewives, especially in the old days, had to make “encaje de bolillos” (bobbin lace), as they used to say, in order to make the most of what they had in the pantry and to set the table every day, as God intended. – The secret of those times was passed down from generation to generation and Carmelina Doncel has published what could be considered a “culinary autobiography” in which she gathers together the traditions and dishes with which her family grew up and which she continues to keep alive in the heat of the kitchen today. – Kale, pumpkin casserole, Christmas Eve stew, cachorreñas, sobreusa or gazapachuelo are some of the dishes she suggests. Alarm over high electromagnetic pollution in the area around Endesa’s substation in Torrox: {Translation, summary} – A recent report measuring and studying electromagnetic pollution in the vicinity of the CEIP El Faro school in Torrox Park has raised concerns among the local community. Commissioned by the Plataforma Ciudadana contra la Subestación de Torrox Park from an external technician, the report reveals alarming data on exposure to electromagnetic fields in sensitive areas near power lines and other devices. – The conclusions of the report indicate that, although the electromagnetic pollution values are within the limits set by state regulations, applying the precautionary principle of Council of Europe Resolution 1815, the levels must be considered high and of concern. The most critical points identified by the study include the entrance gate to the school, located just below a high-voltage power line, and the residential area through which the same line runs, where the electromagnetic field values are alarming, according to experts in ecological and biological construction. – In addition, the high radiation in the area of the transformer, which is not adequately fenced to protect children, and the interference in a nearby park, where the construction of the substation is taking place, are highlighted. – The report leaves an unknown about the radiation levels inside the school, as the measurement could not be carried out there. Given these findings, it raises the possibility of a future increase in exposure due to the growth in electricity demand and the commissioning of the substation. – In addition to electromagnetic pollution, the contracted technician who authored the report stresses that electrical substations may pose additional risks, such as flooding and fire, which could endanger the local community. In particular, the risk of leukaemia, especially in children, is mentioned as one of the most serious hazards associated with prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields. – In response to these findings, it is urgently recommended that the high-voltage power line be buried or re-routed to protect the school and residential population from the harmful effects of electromagnetic pollution. It also urges reconsideration of the location of the power substation in a more environmentally and public health appropriate location. These articles have been distributed in Catalonia, Andalucia, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, La Rioja, Madrid and the Basque Country. People who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them. Gaza Benefit Concert by Mentally Ska’d & guests: Saturday 20 April in Comares Musicians in the Axarquía village of Comares on the eastern side of Malaga province are holding a music event to raise money for the innocent victims of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The event is taking place in the Los Ventorros district of the village, in and around Table Mountain restaurant. It starts at 3pm with popular Comares-based ska band Mentally Ska’d along with other local bands and singers including The Hell Yeahs, The Rats, Alice Sparey, Tom Shackleton and Soul FX. XIX edición del Día del Campo: Benamargosa Sunday, 21 April – At 12.00 hours there will be a reception for the authorities and personalities and the inauguration of the XIX Fiesta del Campo by the Mayor, Salvador Arcas. Half an hour later, the tour of the various exhibitors located in different parts of the old town will begin, with gastronomic tastings of typical Benamargosa products and food such as zoque, 400 litres of baticate, guacamole, ensaladilla cateta, frito moruno and callos. Madrid Propaganda Machine- Venice Commission contradicts Sanchez regime’s false claims, issues announcement confirming its amnesty-critical report before the European Parliament: {Translation, summary} – In an appearance before the European Parliament’s Freedoms Committee, the vice-president of the Venice Commission, Marta Cartabia, has made it clear that the amnesty law that the government of Pedro Sánchez intends to approve does not serve to fulfil the objectives of reconciliation that it claims to seek, nor is it being processed correctly, nor does it have clear constitutional backing, nor does it meet the requirement that it not be a personal measure and, furthermore, it unduly includes crimes of terrorism and corruption. -Referring to a Gov’t spokesperson speech that gave the impression the Vienna Commission supported their position on amnesty, this was exposed as a lie. Cartabia clearly dismantled the socialist discourse that falsely claimed the Venice Commission had endorsed this controversial legislation, and highlighted the puzzling response of the PSOE spokesman, Javier Moreno, who had insisted, against all logic and despite what everyone present had just heard, that the Venice Commission “endorses the amnesty”. – The representative of the European Commission, Damian Mousnier, also warned the Spanish government that in the report it will issue on the amnesty as soon as it is approved, it will take the Venice Commission’s opinion very much into account. “The European Commission is currently analysing the draft law and we finalise our assessment on the basis of the final adopted text, to determine whether it is in line with EU law, including the fundamental values enshrined in the Treaty. In this context, the opinion of the Venice Commission will also contribute to the Commission’s analysis and is a welcome contribution”. Frustrated hotel owners demand action to improve state of some Costa del Sol beaches: – Hotel business owners on the Costa del Sol are frustrated over the state of some beaches along the coastal strip, claiming some projects to stabilise the shores have been delayed for up to three years. – The association that represents the sector (Aehcos) is calling on the Spain’s ministry of environment to speed up the process, saying the destination’s beaches are one of the main drivers for tourism in Malaga province and contribute significantly to the local economy. – Aehcos pointed out some of the projects that have been stalled since 2021 such as the Marbella beach between Venus and or the San Pedro beach {pic}, which has been at a standstill since October 2020. Aehcos said there are even longer delays with improvement work in Mijas (Playa del Bombo), which was recently badly affected by a storm on 9 March. Update– Shock on the eastern coast of Axarquía due to the roar of two F-18 fighters during training maneuvers: {Translation} – It was approximately 11:00 hours this morning, Thursday 18 April, when the residents of the eastern coast of the Axarquia, especially those of Torrox Costa, were startled by the noise produced by two F-18 fighter jets on training manoeuvres. The Ministry of Defence has disassociated this episode from the conflict in the Middle East after the uproar caused on social networks by the dissemination of both photographs and videos of these planes. It is a fact that one of the pilots who has starred in this moment is Jorge Rico from Torrox and that some of his neighbours were even warned of the manoeuvres so that they could capture them with their mobile phone cameras from the area around the Torrox Costa lighthouse. – These two F-18 army planes flew very low over the coast of Axarquia, at a high speed, causing “a loud noise that has generated a great commotion among the population”, as also reported by Diario Sur. Sources from the Ministry of Defence in Malaga have framed the passage of these military aircraft, coming from the Zaragoza air base, “in some routine movements, instruction and training of pilots and military”. They have “completely” disassociated them from the war situation in Ukraine, Gaza and Israel. – According to Diario Sur, in addition to the passage of the two Spanish army aircraft, there was also “the presence this Thursday, for a few minutes, of a large military vehicle in a parking area near the Torrox motorway exit”. In this second case, Ministry of Defence sources in the province have pointed in the same direction, that these are “routine movements” of military vehicles, specifically a Medium Wheeled Armoured Vehicle (BMR). Food alert due to the presence of aflatoxins that can cause cancer in almonds from the US: {Translation} – The EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (Rasff) has issued a food alert warning of the presence of aflatoxins, which increase the risk of cancer, above permitted levels in almonds from the United States. – These aflatoxins are produced by the fungus ‘Aspergillus’, found especially in areas with warm and humid climates, and exposure is linked to an increased risk of some types of cancer such as liver cancer. The alert was issued by Spain on 4 April to the Rasff system, which has qualified it as a “serious” health risk and has restricted its distribution in Spain. – Faced with this alert, FACUA-Consumers in Action criticised the fact that the Rasff system does not provide information on the producer company or the area where the almonds were grown. The analyses have been carried out in a border control. – In this sense, it has pointed out that the scarce information published by the European Commission sows suspicion about all almonds from the United States, as it does not give details about the producing company or even the area of the country where they have been grown. Family left devastated after the theft of their six dogs in Malaga town: – The passing of time is yet to lighten the grief of José Manuel and his daughter Pilar. The theft of their six podenco dogs has left them “torn apart inside”, the father told SUR. The incident happened in the early hours of 4 April, when thieves took advantage of there being no one home at their property in Monda and stole their beloved animals. They reported the theft the following morning to the Guardia Civil. – The thieves did not even go in the house, José Manuel pointed out. “They went straight for the dogs; they broke the fence to enter the property and forced the door of the kennels,” he said. Once inside, José Manuel continued, they smashed the padlocks of the cages in which the dogs were sleeping. – José Manuel is convinced it was a planned robbery, since, according to him, the property where they are located is in an area with difficult access and nothing else was taken. He knows it took place at night as a neighbour heard noises, although at the time they thought no more of it. “They are dogs that are used for hunting; I am registered in a hunting reserve but I don’t even have a shotgun, what I liked was to take them for walks,” said José Manuel, who suffered a similar theft several years ago on the same farm. “I never saw those dogs again; I was also infinitely fond of them,” he said. Volkswagen electric car sales plunge in Europe: – Sales of Volkswagen electric cars have plunged by almost a quarter in Europe as demand for battery-powered vehicles stalls and buyers return to petrol. Editorial Comment For A Slow News Day: Spain is racing to catch up with the US and Cuba as leading banana republics where the “truth” is seriously abused and ignored, while leaders make up “facts” as they find convenient. Here are some examples. There is a conflict between the Junta de Andalucia and the national gov’t regarding the processing of water facility development in Andalucia, with each side calling the other an outright liar, blaming each other for the lack of progress in Andalucia. Andalucia says they submitted plans 3 years ago, Madrid claims no plans were submitted, even after hard copies were recently found by investigators! The way each side twists the words of the other is deceptive and not at all professional behavior. The same is being done between the Congress and the Constitutional Court, regarding the Amnesty. One side wants to enforce laws as they were written, the other wants to find loopholes to exploit. This is also evident by the decay of Public Health systems. Officials blame “unforeseeable” circumstances for insane delays in access to services, while detractors claim these issues have been evident in projections for many years and should have been addressed before the current crisis developed. And again, this is how the scandals over EU funds fraud are handled, both sides accusing the other of mis-appropriating funds rather than addressing the crimes allegedly committed: the PP accuses Sanchez’s wife (PSOE) of fraud, the PSOE responds, not by arguing facts, but by counter accusations of fraud against the partner of the PP mayor of Madrid. Both sides are “re-interpreting” law, ignoring the intent as long as they can twist it in some contrived fashion, to appear to support their agenda. It seems we are being governed by spoiled children who make up “facts” for the sake of convenience, who lie to your face and claim it is the other party that is deluded, who prefer “finger pointing” to actual negotiations sticking to established law, and to whom feelings outweigh demonstrable truths. Both sides, left and right, play this game, to the detriment of the population as a whole, and I find it despicable. It is also rather difficult to cover and expose in compact articles; entire books could and will be written exposing these abuses of authority. Meanwhile, any progress is slow and many people suffer needlessly. Basic administrative processes take months or years. The DGT begins controls on Andalusian roads today: {Translation} – The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is carrying out from this Monday until next Sunday, 21 April, a new specific campaign to monitor and control speed on the roads of Andalusia, one of the key factors in road accidents. – Over the seven days of the campaign, the DGT has detailed in a press release that special attention will be paid to speed-related risk sections, as well as to those points where traffic exceeds the established limit and where there is a high accident rate. – Of the 139,007 vehicles checked during the last campaign on Andalusian roads, more than 9,000 drivers were found to have committed speeding offences and were therefore reported for speeding, which represents 6.5% of the total. Of the offending drivers, 38.4% were notified of the offence when they were stopped and informed by traffic officers. – When the controls were carried out on motorways and dual carriageways, using dynamic radar (with the radar on board the vehicle and in motion), the average speed at which the drivers reported were travelling was 129 kilometres per hour, which is nine kilometres per hour above the generic limit permitted on this type of road, although below the 12 kilometres per hour exceeded by the vehicles controlled in the previous campaign. – In view of its preventive nature, drivers will be informed of the existence of controls, either through variable message panels or circumstantial vertical signposting when the road does not have such panels. Those in charge of implementing this campaign will be the officers of the Guardia Civil Traffic Group, as well as the rest of the Local and Regional Police who wish to join in. – In addition, since 21 March 2022, cars and motorbikes are no longer allowed to exceed the speed limits set on conventional roads when overtaking other vehicles. Yet Another Huge Malpractice Settlement Against The Andalusian Health Service (SAS): {Translation} – The Andalusian Health Service (SAS) will have to pay 400,000 euros in compensation to the family of a man who died with biliary obstruction after not being operated on in Almeria. “It was the only possibility to save his life”, says the Patient’s Ombudsman Association, which has reported on this sentence issued on 3 April 2024 by the Administrative Court No. 3 of the capital of Almeria. – The 56-year-old patient from Albox was referred to the University Hospital of Torrecárdenas in Almería from the Hospital La Inmaculada in Huércal-Overa in February 2018. “There, unfortunately, he was given up for lost from the first moment, despite the fact that a cholangiocarcinoma (cancer that forms in the bile ducts) was suspected from day 5, for which there was an available treatment surgery to avoid biliary obstruction,” they explain. According to the communiqué of this case, which has been handled by the lawyer Ignacio Martínez, instead of focusing on this option, which was vital, the doctors focused on the secondary option, interconsulting with psychiatry and performing a puncture procedure three days later to extend his life by a few hours, without transferring him to the ICU even when he entered critical condition. – “In short, at no time was the surgical or intensive care option that could have saved the patient from cholangitis contemplated”, they state. – The court has fully upheld the claim of the widow, children and sister of the patient who died as a result of malpractice and recognises their right to be compensated in amounts exceeding 400,000 euros, adding the principal, interest and costs. Lawyer Martínez studied the case and filed an administrative claim against the SAS and a subsequent lawsuit. “To avoid such an outcome, the patient should have been operated on, while for the SAS doctors this was not even an option. At no time was the surgical or intensive care option that could have saved the patient from cholangitis contemplated… It is therefore clear that in the case in question, they did not act correctly,” the ruling states. – It is also surprising that the patient was subjected to a puncture procedure, the sole purpose of which was to prolong his life for a few days, without even considering surgery to remove the cholangiocarcinoma, “nor was a possible resection to avoid obstruction of the biliary tract consulted with surgery”. Time to pay the piper! – The Airef asks the Treasury to bring together the autonomous regions to share out the €9,000 million adjustment demanded by Brussels: {Translation, summary} – The independent fiscal authority (Airef) recommends the Treasury to agree as soon as possible on a fiscal adjustment plan to reduce the deficit and debt in which the level of effort that will be required of each administration is agreed with the autonomous communities. This is one of the main messages that the fiscal watchdog conveys in its report on the Initial Budgets of Public Administrations for 2024 published on Thursday. – The president of the Airef, Cristina Herrero, recalled that 44% of public spending falls on the shoulders of the regional governments, so “it must be clear what is the distribution of commitments” between the different administrations and also how responsibility is shared if there is non-compliance. – After four years of free spending, in 2024 it is time to open the melon of public finances. The new European fiscal rules will come into force next year and the deterioration of Spanish finances – with a debt of 108% of GDP and a deficit of 3.6% – puts the country on the list of those that will have to present adjustment plans to redress the situation. – The independent fiscal authority (Airef) warns that Spain will have to make an adjustment of between 9,000 and 6,000 million euros each year to comply with the new framework. – According to Airef estimates, neither the central government nor the autonomous communities will comply this year with the European recommendation not to increase primary expenditure net of revenue (i.e. without interest on debt) to 2.6%. In fact, the fiscal authority has worsened its deficit expectations for the autonomous communities. – Despite all this, the Airef believes that Spain will be able to meet the deficit limits demanded by Brussels (a maximum of 3% of GDP) in 2025 and 2026. But after that date it estimates that, in the absence of adjustments, the country will once again fail to comply. Moreover, the effort Spain will have to make is greater, given that the new fiscal framework requires debt reduction to be firm and sustained over several years. To achieve this, the Airef estimates that Spain will have to propose an adjustment of either 9 billion a year for four years or around 6 billion over a period of seven years. Proceedings on the location of the electricity substation at Torrox Park closed: {Translation} – The Malaga Provincial Prosecutor’s Office has agreed to dismiss and close the criminal investigation proceedings opened as a result of the complaint lodged by the residents’ platform against the project to build the electricity substation in the Torrox-Park urbanisation. The neighbours denounced the works before the Public Prosecutor’s Office for alleged offences against regional planning and the environment. In any case, after commissioning the corresponding reports to the Seprona of the Guardia Civil, and requesting documentation from the Torrox Town Hall and the company Sevillana-Endesa, which is promoting the project, the public prosecutor specialising in crimes against land use planning, historical heritage and the environment, has agreed, in a document to which Diario SUR has had access, to order the proceedings to be closed. – The prosecutor notes, the newspaper adds, that the report of the Seprona of the Guardia Civil states that the works carried out “are covered by the corresponding urban planning licence and technical project, as well as the regional environmental authorisation”. It also confirms that the works affect an area of public hydraulic domain” and that a wall is being built to protect and defend against possible flooding of the public watercourse”. “There are no reports on possible effects on the flora and fauna in the area. CDC Forced To Release Hidden Covid-19 Injection Injury Reports Despite Attempts To Conceal Crucial Info From The Public: – The agency was forced by a federal judge to disclose the reports. The judge dismissed the government’s arguments that processing the responses and redacting sensitive information would require too much work. – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released previously hidden reports of facial paralysis and other adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination. The 780,000 reports were received shortly after the COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out and show that people experienced a wide range of post-vaccination problems, including heart inflammation, miscarriages, and seizures. – “Loss of consciousness and seizure immediately following injection. Went to ER by ambulance,” one person reported. Another stated, “Diagnosed with Bells Palsy today due to left-sided facial numbness and paralysis.” People lodged the reports with V-safe, a text-message system created by the CDC to monitor for possible side effects of COVID-19 vaccines. – The CDC, for years, declined to make the V-safe data public, instead publishing studies that described the reports as providing reassurance about the safety of the vaccines.
