Recommendation – Computer Assistance

As I am not really technical when it comes to computer problems I recently came across Jan Tytgat’s advertisement in Digame.

Jan came to my home and explained in layman’s language how to deal with the various questions I had, he also cleaned up my computer which had almost slowed to a halt.

I found him very knowledgeable and polite and speaks fluent English.

He lives in the Torrox area and is extremely reasonable.

Yahoo said on Thursday that information for at least 500 million user accounts was stolen from its network in 2014. “This is the biggest data breach ever,” said well-known cryptologist Bruce Schneier. These passwords are used to gain access to your account, change your password and security question, thus locking you out of the now stolen account. Other recent major data hacks have occurred at Adobe, Dropbox, LinkedIn and more. Now the bad news…Yahoo has virtually eliminated support for users of their free email. Locked out of your Yahoo email? There is no more phone support and no email contact info on their help pages, or their Facebook or Twitter, despite their help page directing you to these sites. The Yahoo help site specifically states any telephone help-line number for Yahoo is a scam. Supposedly you can Tweet to Yahoo requesting help, but mine went unanswered. They also suggest you visit their Yahoo self help forums. Guess what? You must log into your Yahoo account to use their forum! These useless suggestions are all Yahoo has to offer:

Did you read that last line in this screenshot? Unbelievable! Do that and you lose all contacts and saved emails! If you regularly change your password and signed up for the 2 stage login Yahoo pushes on you every login, using your mobile number, then you are unlikely to be at risk. If you have not recently changed your password, and setup the extra security steps, now is the time! Or move to a free email that takes your privacy seriously. I suggest www.hushmail.com.

Scruffs Dog Show Success

Costa Animal Society would like to thank everyone who made our Scruffs Annual Dog Show such a success on Saturday. We would particularly like to thank the Nerja Town Hall Foreigners Department, Veterinary Clinic San Fernando and all the other kind sponsors who donated so generously.

We made 2580 euros profit and found possible homes for at least four rescue dogs. Thank you all.

Diesel Quality

Having heard that there may be problems using cheap supermarket diesel, I was pleased to see the signs displayed on the pumps at Eroski saying that their fuel was guaranteed by BP. So not dodgy supermarket fuel after all.
I have been filling my car with their fuel for about 6 years without trouble.

I always thought it was a myth that cheap supermarket fuel wasn’t as good as the named, more expensive brands and always used to fill up at Eroski. Then our diesel car started to feel like it was ‘missfiring’ and our garage mechanic said that it could be the jets.

We started to do a bit of research on Google and realised that the brands like Repsol and BP have additives in them and the Ultima version of BP has even more so that are supposed to clean the engine and give it a better ‘mpg’. We have now been using BP for about 6 months and have found it does make the car run better and we do get more kms per litre, so we won’t be going back to Eroski. Their fuel is cheaper as it apparently does not have the same additives in it.

Found this out quite a few years ago, having had a similar problem with a Mitsubishi L200. The cheaper diesel contain no additives that will clean the injectors, and therefore you need to add a separate additive, usually every other tank full. I changed over to Repsol Plus 10, which although more expensive, makes the engine run smoother and I get a much better fuel consumption. Before you go to the expense of changing injectors, run a couple of tankfulls of better diesel through, together with an injector cleaner which can be bought from most garages, and see if that makes a difference.

We have stopped using the cheap fuel after hearing from several mechanics about the detrimental effects on engines. We buy fuel from BP. Yes it’s more expensive but with the loyalty card you don’t end up paying too much more. I’d rather pay for quality fuel and save the engine personally. Nigel.

David’s experience with cheap diesel rings a lot of bells. In short, running a diesel car on a constant diet of supermarket or budget diesel is not a good idea, and can cause exactly the problems he describes.

What differentiates cheap diesel from good quality is the presence (or not) of additives. Some of these improve the way the fuel burns (giving quieter running, more complete combustion, and better acceleration and power), while others clean and lubricate the fuel system – importantly the fuel pump and injectors. These additives, not cheap, are used in all high quality fuel, including Repsol, but far less so in cheap fuels. That partly explains the price difference.

If you are going to use budget fuel (and the economics are questionable, because good fuel gives better mpg), then you should alternate it with a good quality fill-up, at least one good tank in three.

Your garage is probably right in attributing the problems to fuel, but being a bit naughty about the costs of putting it right. The last time I had a set of four injectors fully serviced and recalibrated (recommended every 60,000 miles or so), it cost me just €70. Contact Germidiesel in Malaga (they’re not a long way from Bauhaus) who have a high reputation in the trade. I doubt you will need new injectors – just get yours serviced.

First step, though is simply for you to get hold of some diesel cleaning agent, and add it to your fuel at the rate of 1:200 (remedial clean) for two or three tankfuls. Go for either Wynn’s or 3CV Diesel Fuel Treatment, or Miller’s Diesel Power Plus. The 3CV product is uaually available in a 1-litre grey can in Eroski (the source of your problem!). Follow the instructions on the can

Buying posh-grade diesel isn’t necessary. Just use Repsol’s (or other main brand) standard, and your car will behave better.

Hi, I use Eroski’s premium diesel in my E220 Merc and it goes better than on the cheap stuff. Try using this instead, and get a can of injector cleaner from a car shop and dump that in the tank too and see how she goes. Hate to say it but with 145k on the clock chucking E1000 at her seems a lot. I’d get a second opinion too, would cost you nothing. Hard starting sounds more like a glow plug to me, especially if it’s a sudden problem, and much cheaper to fix. If it’s that fit a set as once they start to go they all go sooner or later. I had a problem a few years ago with my diesel engine misfiring. New to the area at the time, I took the car to an English-speaking mechanic in Vélez, who ‘diagnosed’ exactly the same problem (note the inverted commas). His solution was simply to avoid Eroski fuel: ‘Run the tank to empty and refill with premium fuel’. Having done this, I found no difference whatsoever, and after I took the car to the main dealers, they did a proper diagnosis and replaced a part (expensively).
It wasn’t Eroski fuel that was the problem, and indeed if you look at the pumps there, you’ll see that the quality of the fuel is tested by government inspectors and guaranteed by the suppliers, who are . . . wait for it . . . BP!
So perhaps David should get a second opinion from a more reputable garage?

I am ex motor trade, and I was warned twenty years ago that some of the cut price fuels sold in England (petrol and diesel) sold cheap, never had the expensive chemical cleaners added to them as additives, hense– the attraction to sell cheaper fuel.

Fifteen years ago I was warned about cheaper diesel at Eroski, not being to good for some engines, though I have run all my Diesel Seats with no problems on diesel bought from Eroski, BUT, all might not be the same in diagnosing such failing’s.

For instance, I do long’ish runs, also now and then drive quite hard to clear the internals of slow driving slag, that can build up in the combustion chambers. I think Eroski and Other garages here in Spain and England, sell a more expensive Diesel along-side the discount one, with claims that your engine runs cleaner, perhaps we should heed this advice. A friend of mine claims benefits using the enhanced version.

You see, are you using a cheap engine oil,? all this is also being burnt.

To bare Judgment on self analyzing, is a long lonely road. But, I am sure it needs investigating.

Cut Price Diesel Problems ?

Has anyone had problems with Eroski diesel ? We have filled our tanks up there for around 10 years with no problems. A couple of weeks ago my wife’s Renault Clio 1.5 dci with 145000 kms on the clock was very hard to start and the engine stop light was flashing. I took it into my garage and he informed me the fuel injectors were the problem and it needed a new set of 4 at a cost of €1000 or recondition the old ones for €600, he told me that using cheap fuel was the cause and in future to go the Repsol garages, replies to Digamextra please.

Personal Car Hire Excess Insurance

From my experience of using my own car hire excess insurance policy, this does not stop the hire company taking a deposit (or putting a ‘stop’) on your credit card for the amount of the excess against any damage.

The hire car company will still charge the excess to you if there is damage, it is then up to you to claim that back from your own insurance policy.

I show them the policy merely to stop them trying to sell me their own excess cover which is far more expensive – they do not ‘accept it’ as such. You simply refuse any of their optional extras, but they will continue to make you aware that you have to pay any excess yourself to them.

The personal excess policy is between you and the insurance company, not the car hire provider and the insurance company.

In my experience, with the exception of business hire, car hire companies have never accepted insurance other than their own.

The policies that cover excess or injury have nothing to do with the hire company.

What you do is refuse their offers of additional charges for collision damage waver etc. Then if you have a claim pay the excess to the hire company and claim back through your chosen company. As I say, as far as I remember it has always been done this way so is not a new development.

(3) Final Word on the Subject –

There seems to be conflicting advice and information about hire car insurance, particularly from Airport Car Hire Companies. Your reader MM has today asked if there are any Airport Car Hirers who ” recognise” personal excess car insurance.

The simple answer is that none do and never have.

Many years of hiring cars at many different airports in Europe has taught me the following:
The quoted car hire charges always include fully comprehensive legal EU insurance so if you prang the car you are legally covered against a claim from a third party AND the hire car. The hire companies are always careful to avoid telling you this!
However, there will always be an Excess to pay on any claim and this is usually €1000 upwards so the Hire Companies then try to sell you their ” Excess insurance” which is designed to absolve you from having to pay this excess charge in the event of a claim. They will tell you that even if there is a minor claim eg for a broken door lock, the Excess charge is payable.
This “Excess insurance” is usually at least €10 per day which often virtually doubles the hire cost and is where the hire companies make their profit. They incentivise their staff to sell the insurance so they nag you with scaremongering facts to frighten you into taking out the insurance. Bear in mind that a €10 per day insurance policy equates to an annual policy cost of €3650 so you can see how much profit they make on each ” sale”.
Any customer/ car hirer can take out their own personal Car Hire Excess insurance. I use

the cost is a fraction of the Car Hire Company insurance.

Whether or not you have a policy in place you can ” decline” the Car Hire Company’s insurance. If you ask if they ” recognise” or ” accept” your personal excess insurance they will say no. However, what they WILL do is ask you for a much increased deposit ( usually the full excess amount) on your credit card if you decline the insurance.

In the event that there is damage to the car or any other claim, they will not refund your Credit Card Deposit and it is then up to YOU to make a claim for this from your personal Excess Insurance Company. The Hire Company are not interested whether you do this or not!

Some Car Hire Companies have a reputation for targeting this type of customer by identifying you when you return the car and making up fictitious damage eg ” You’ve broken the door lock” or ” You’ve scratched the car” and then refusing to refund your deposit. Delpaso Car Hire are notorious for this ( read their reviews on line!)

After the successful Art Day’s that took place in July and October 2015, Dutch enterpriser Helene Mostertman (restaurant Vino Mio) and Dutch artist & art-event organizer Lieuwke Loth (gallery Luz de la Vida) are now preparing for a third Art Day in Malaga. This time it will take place at Mercedo Merced. Of course this is THE place for art and artists, as this is the birthplace of Picasso!

The Art Day presents 20 artists who live and work in the ‘Costa del Sol’ region plus some participants of the International Symposium LUZ who are coming from other countries during that week. Artists do (originally) come from Belgium, The Netherlands, Belarus, Austria, UK, Spain, USA, Argentinia and other countries. During the day, the artists will literally be at work. This allows visitors a chance to see and meet them while creating their art.

For the artists themselves, it is a perfect time to get acquainted with each other. It’s an opportunity to share their profession and experiences e.g. exhibitions, galleries, symposia, techniques and methods of work etc. It is a day to meet, and to be inspired, by each other and the dynamics of creation.

Malaga is a vibrant city with many cultural offerings. Plaza Merced contains some lovely terraces to stay at, while Mercado Merced is a good place to find some tasty tapas and wines!

After the weekend we’ll start with the 2nd International Art Symposium in Cómpeta!

10 International professional artists will be welcomed by either the Mayor or Minister of Culture, in the Salon de Actos. Every artist will give a short presentation about their art and themselves. Dutch bronze caster will also give an explanation about the technique of bronze casting.

The LUZ Symposium will be held in the marvelous environment of the Andalusian mountain village Cómpeta, surrounded by beautiful nature. This is a public event that utilises local spaces in Cómpeta. Locals, art-lovers and visitors can meet the artists and see them creating art.

The Nerja Players begin the winter season on Tuesday 18th October by presenting an unrehearsed reading of the script of an edition of “Are You Being Served”, specially written for the London Stage. This popular tv comedy series ran between the 70’s and the 80’s and followed the exploits of employees at London’s “Grace Brothers” department store. It was extremely well-acclaimed and became an accepted household favourite for many years, typified by sexual innuendo, slapstick, visual gags, the ever present double-entendres and their now-famous catch phrases.

Very Temporary Puppy Foster Care Needed

We rescued a very sweet puppy about 9 weeks old – named TACHO – and are working to get him re-homed.

Unfortunately, he needs to be separated from other dogs until he gets his second vaccinations.

It is hard on him and on us as we have several other dogs.

Would you be willing to provide care for him for only 13 days…from this Thursday – Nov. 13 until the 25th when he’ll be able to mix with other dogs?

Changes for Airport Car Hire ?

Have just heard that two people – who had previously taken out insurance to cover any excess and avoid paying over the top fees at the Car Hire Centres at Malaga Airport – were told last week, that the companies based there are no longer accepting any other excess insurance, but their own.

Taking the mystery out of wood oven cooking! This practical workshop, hosted at Casa Montes Negros farm, shows all the basic steps of how to light a wood oven, what wood to use and how to achieve the perfect temperature for both baking and slow cooking. Many wood ovens are still in existence in traditional Spanish country houses and there are smaller ovens available to buy as this ancient art of cooking is becoming fashionable again.

Wood oven baking is not just for making that perfect crispy pizza! Through a delicious menu, we explore the many recipes that can be made once you have fired up the wood oven. All the recipes can be adapted for use in a regular oven too, and the workshop is suitable for both novices looking for some basic recipes and experienced cooks looking for new ideas or just a great day out with like minded foodies!

World’s Biggest Coffee Moring – Competa

I am delighted to advise that due to the support from 190 people on Friday 30th September, our Competa World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raised an outstanding euros 2860. As usual, the selection of lovingly baked cakes were amazing and not one soggy bottom!!

Over 40 local businesses generously donated raffle and tombola prizes where both Kevin, Sue and Liz with Mandy had spectacular tables.

The Guess the Beans competition was won by J.Pounds with 2569 and Danny and Lily correctly guessed 2100 Spots on the Cake.

Final Item re Driving Licence Renewal

I think the original question was – do you need to renew your Spanish driving licence on reaching the age of 65?

I can recommend the clinic at Centro de Reconocimientos Archarquia, Av Andalucia, 106, 2 – 6 Edf Cibeles, Torre del Mar (between bus station and Pintura de Andalucia).

Here they can answer all your questions, no appointment necessary. They also do all the paper-work to send to Trafico in Malaga, take the photos necessary and do the simple medical, eye, ears etc. also a re-actions test if you are of a certain age. The cost because I am over 70 and therefore no tax was applicable was €30 and my licence arrived within 2 weeks – and that was to a post office box address.

Does anyone have any experience of using an oven from the uk in Spain on bottled gas , I understand that they come with a set of extra jets so that you can change them to bottled uk gas but wondered if it is that simple to do ?

Rental Cars – Advice

When booking a car hire, whether directly with the company or through comparison website, you should be able to look at the terms and conditions of the hire. Look for the fuel policy and go with one that says it is ‘full to full’. Many will show the fuel policy on their page of quotes and explain what that means, ie that you are provided with a full tank and you need to take it back with a full tank to avoid any charges.

When at the carhire desk at the airport they may still ask if you wish to pay for the tank at an inflated price, usually they say it will save you having to fill up before you bring it back, but you can refuse that option.

Looking at the Marbesol website under their fuel policy it says: Get and return the car with full fuel with the Options: Half and All Inclusive. For the Basic Option the fuel policy is Full/Empty, by preparing the tank and recharging 40€ for management and logistic expenses.

Also, it is a good idea to take out your own excess insurance and then you refuse any optional insurance extras the car hire desk will try to sell you. It will allow you to claim back any inflated repair charges if they try to say you have damaged the car.

All formatting, pretty colours, bold, underlining, strange fonts etc are automatically removed.

About Photos and other attachments

If you want to send a picture please send it as an attachment to your email, in JPEG format and try and keep the size down to around 200KB.

Please don’t send PDFs or Word documents.

So all you do is remove those spaces before contacting a contributor.
