Car Insurance Question

Refund of insurance premium when you sell your car?
We had our car insurance with Caser. After we sold our car and we did not intend to buy a new one, we asked Caser to refund part of the premium. Because if there is no object to insure, there is not premium to pay. At least, that’s what we thought.
But Caser does not refund anything. We have a contract for a year and we have to pay for the full year, even after selling our car.
Is this normal in Spain?

Internet reception …advice please

Please can someone in Digameland please tell me simply what has been happening in the Penoncillo area of Torrox Costa where fiber optic cables have been put in.
At the moment I have Internet signal from a dish on a nearby apartment block supplied by a German guy who does a lot of Torrox area.

It is a cheapish system but sadly not always reliable .
Great , when it all works BUT !! Not reliable . m
Will fiber optics be better ? How does it work ? Who supplies this service ?

How expensive is it ?
I am sure others will be interested in the replies so maybe they can be published so we all can stay up to date .

DoctorLaptop replies: Fiber optic is great. Mine is super fast and reliable. I use Axartel as all the other providers I found insist on selling you packages with TV and/or phone service to get the fiber optic installed. I pay €24.99 per month for a 60Mb/s connection. Install was under €70. They run a cable from the neighborhood box to your house. My cousin’s daughter who lives in the Netherlands is getting married

Recommendation –Doing a Search of Digamextra

I strongly agree with the many people who have struggled to find previous items in Digamextra. It is a very poor Search System (IMO)

Here’s what I do using my Google email account

I type in a keyword (or 2) which I remember from the original entry.

Press the Search/Enter button and you will get a page listing a selection of Daily Digamextras. Just look at those few words that appear at the end of each headline. You should be able to identify a relevant item.

If not – you have to plod through those Issues listed ….. a process that let’s you decide how important that search is compared with enjoying the rest of your life…….

Note from DoctorLaptop: Easy method to search Digamextra even if you don’t subscribe. Please try this if you have had problems searching for old Digamextra posts. Use plain old Google search. Enter “Digamextra + any item” (without quote marks) and hit enter. You will get results of every issue containing the term you searched for, with the date it was posted and with a small snippet of the post’s text where that search term was found (that should be enough to identify the post you seek). Then scroll down thru the Google results and look for the snippet of the post you were seeking using the date shown as an extra guide if you know the approximate date it was posted (see pic below). When you find it click on it. It will open that Digamextra issue where you will find the post you seek. Looking for very old posts? Then use Digame instead of Digamextra in the search. I really cannot make it any more straight forward.

In an effort to keep all the Digamites happy, if you try this method but still have difficulty please call me on 675 993 069 (after 12 noon please). I will schedule you for a FREE lesson where I coach you on this method until you are confident you have mastered it. We really do try our best to accommodate our faithful audience. Lessons need to be done at my shop as I still can not walk very well.

Recommendation- Revisiting an Item from CDS News…

I read in the Costa del Sol News 5-12-2017 Tom Drapers article “Brit Scene” page 17.
I found it most interesting as it refers to an organisation that is growing in stature.
I posted a reference to this same organisation in Digamextra, issue 458.
I am posting this in case some of you missed it and hope you and others will check it out, I find Tom’s page quite enlightening and humorous.

My favourite one is Medical Detection dogs. It is slowly becoming recognised by the medical profession .

These dogs are being trained to detect various illness just by sniffing a urine sample etc. It has been proved they can detect cancer almost before it has started!

If this became the norm, say annual or by annual tests, just think in a short time with government funding how it would take the load off the NHS.

Purse Found on Nerja Beach

Whilst we were at the beach on Sunday afternoon a purse was discovered on the wall behind Hotel/Restaurante Jose Cruz.
It contained a couple of hundred euros and several cards.
A German lady took it away promising to hand it in to Santander bank (noted from one of the cards) Monday morning.
Hopefully – this happened and the owner has been reunited with all the contents

Recommendation –for Warren Phillips/Car Clean Malaga.

I had my 15 year old cabriolet ‘cleaned’ by Warren for my birthday. But cleaned does not say enough. He took it and left me a car to use and when it came back it was unbelievable.

It was like new inside and out (even the engine!). All the dings and scratches sorted, a couple of loose bits reattached and where I thought the steering wheel had lost its colour I found it was 15 years of my grubby hands. So thank you Warren.

Recommendation – First Aid Training

I attended the basic first aid course which was conducted by Jason Bland of SCL First Aid Training in Viñuela.

The content was both interesting and informative and includes the recovery position, CPR and abdominal thrusts (The Heimlich manoeuvre). We were all involved in role-play to practice the techniques required to help and comfort an injured person and quite possibly keep them alive until professional medical help arrives.

I, like most of us, was ignorant with regards to procedures, should a tragic accident take place. Although I had watched countless episodes of Holby City!

I now feel much more confident to deal with a situation should it arise.

In the UK less than 1 in 10 people survive an out of hospital cardiac arrest, however, in Norway the survival rate is 1 in 4, why? Because CPR is taught in secondary schools.

As many of us live in ‘campo’ areas, the difference between life and death might be first aid training.

My Partner died and I am selling off her books. I am partially sighted and have no use for them. They include cookery; tourist: Spanish road maps covering the country. Can be bought as a job lot or sold by genre. All are in pristine condition. They include novels in both English and German. A small select library in their own right.

I am selling too my own collection of books, which are all English and apart from the fiction novels consist of a collection of reference works used for my work as a freelance journalist and writer before our move to Spain. In total there are some 120 hard back books. Most of these books are in pristine condition. The remainder are in excellent condition. My non – fiction are devoted primarily to art and art history.

If you’re wanting to change the look and feel of your room, changing the rods and curtains really makes a big difference. My La Herradura villa came with these sheers and rods although I brought my own from the U.S.

As you know, rods can be cut easily. One large set is 2 meters with the remaining 2 sets being 150 and a smaller one being 95.

The sheers are quite interesting with a striped pattern which lets in lots of light. 60 EU or best offer for all.

Curtain panels measure 220 long by 144 wide but can be shortened or lengthened a bit. They are white/ivory so very light and airy.

Services Another case for Steven Rowles Animal Healing.

Steven received a call regarding a dog called Lucky. Lucky was a large black dog of mixed breed fostered for a weekend, but never left after the fostering family fell n love with him. But before long his new parents discovered an unpredictable aggression towards other dogs. Walking him which should have been a pleasure, now became a worrying issue. Steven quickly made friends with Lucky and discovered a very loving dog, that was willing to learn. But, yet another animal with an unfortunate traumatic start in life with previous irresponsible owners and his sense of wrong behaviour was a little distorted.

For Lucky’s second session, Steven took one of his own dogs to desensitise Lucky. But Lucky immediately attacked the car before Steven could remove his dog. After putting Lucky through Stevens calming and desensitising process, at the end of the session, Lucky stood side by side with Stevens own dog and couldn’t have been more disinterested.

For Lucky’s fourth session Steven took him to Velez dog park. After putting him through his, No Fear technique, Lucky was let off inside the park with 20 other barking dogs. What was a willful, fearful dog, was suddenly a happy animal, running with the pack, without aggression. It was an amazing moment.

Lucky also went through two more sessions of leash training as he could be unpredictable on a lead, one with Steven and one with his parents, which he responded to really well and proved he could be relaxed around other dogs, both on the lead and off. Walks are now worry free.

AAR Needs Help please

We are looking for a very special person to help one of our dogs gain confidence. Rusty is a 2 year old Podenco who was scavenging for scraps of food. He is currently living in kennels but unfortunately his lack of confidence has led to the others wanting to bully him. He watches the other dogs playing but sadly doesn’t really know yet how to play himself. Rusty needs to be in a home without other dogs or only with another dog of a balanced nature. A short term foster placement for assessment found that he was very well behaved, clean in the house, didn’t bark and wasn’t destructive. He also slept throughout the night. He is also good in the car. All expenses will be covered.

Are you the person who could work with Rusty to help him gain confidence and learn to play. You will get full support from us and we will put you in touch with a behaviourist for further support if required. Rusty is such a deserving boy with a very sweet nature. RHD – commercial vehicle- amended information

We have a RHD Nissan Navarra, which is classed as N1 – a commercial vehicle – and it has been possible to get this on to Spanish plates.

Andalucia wouldn’t do it, but the neighbouring province of Castilla La Mancha would. So, it is not correct to say it is not possible in the whole of Spain.

Once fully registered the 6-monthly ITVs in Andalucia are now routine – as long as the Ficha Tecnica states that it is a RHD.

I can see a larger lorry being problematic but it is certainly possible with pick-ups.

Host Family Required

I was wondering if you might be able to help, my son is looking to live out in Torrox from Aug 1st – April 1st to take part in a football program.

Warning re Removal Lorry

You cannot matriculate (put on Spanish plates) a right hand drive commercial Vehicle here in Spain, so if you want to purchase the Vehicle to take back to the UK, then that’s fine, but if you want to use it here in Spain, then you only have 6 months use of it, it then has to be scrapped or taken out of the country. Of course you can continue to use it until the Guardia stop you, but remember you are not insured, even though you think you are. Look at your policy

“Vehicles must be road legal at all times”, after 6 months the Vehicle is not road legal.

The main reason you cannot matriculate the Vehicle is a vision problem,

imagine you are approaching a main road from the left on a road which is set at 45 degrees to the main road, there is no way you can see if any vehicles are approaching from the left when you are sat in the right hand driver’s seat. So if you want to buy it, go ahead, just be aware of the above. Lucy.

Well – so many of you were interested in “voting” and commenting on this issue

Here are the numbers :

26 correspondents supported the idea to make the lower limit €10.

4 supported a €20 minimum

8 strongly supported leaving things as they were.

The overwhelming number suggested that cheaper items should be donated to a charity & it was pointed out that one could telephone a charity & they would most likely collect items.

Thank you all SO much – Digamextra subscribers really are active & interested !

SO….. in future, I shall not include items under €10 euros for sale

(unless there’s a really, really good reason why I should consider doing otherwise in a one-off Ad.)

List of Donation Shops for Animal Welfare ?

Would it be possible to have a permanent list of Donation Shops who support Animal Welfare and Shelter added to the Digame list? And note if they can collect items.

Anyone with donations of saleable items could then know where to place them, either at one shop, or spread over several.

My Mum has an apartment in El Morche that we visit in the summer.

This year our kids are old enough for a road trip from Suffolk – I think!

A few years ago my husband and I explored the area using a voucher scheme for hotels. We got a book in the travel agents in Nerja and chose from coloured vouchers going up in price and then could choose from the book the hotels you wanted to stay in.

I have forgotten the name of the scheme- do you happen to know the name of it or something similar?

Whilst some other towns have private alternatives to the official P O Box, I have not found one in Torrox unfortunately so agree wholeheartedly with Malcom’s comments yesterday. The cost used to be reasonable, but particularly since we’ve had to pay extra to have both of our names (although they are the same surname) on the account, it is nearly 100€ which does seems a lot considering they don’t have to leave their warm office to deliver our mail! Recommendation- Natural Gas Query

Linda is of course right in that you can view certain business pages on Facebook, without having an account. However, I do not agree with her optimistic last line: “So you can click any Facebook link here on Dígamextra and find out all about unwanted dogs, restaurants – whatever!”
A post may end with something like “see more on our Facebook account”. Unfortunately you often end up disappointed. There may be nothing about the subejct of that post – or any other useful info! At least not easily to be found. When that has happened to you too often, you stop clicking on Facebook links! Facebook sucks! Life is too short for that!

Time to pay the annual ”black-mail ” fee to the post office,

How can it be ”free” to deliver mail on scooters and vans, when they charge nearly 100 euros for us to collect our mail.

Surely it must be cheaper for one person to pop the mail into boxes than several persons to travel miles delivering it.

We don’t even get to own the box and there is not even a place to park a car,

So you risk a ”fine” if you stop to pick up your mail.

Recommendation –Charity’s Response to Amending the €5

If you can’t sell any items on Digamextra, APARIV animal charity will always welcome them to sell in their shop.

It is in Av Duque de Ahumada, Torre del Mar.

To find the shop, coming from the Church on Av Andalucia, turn left at the roundabout just past the Taxi rank and filling station, and the shop is approx 100 meters down there on the right hand side.

Recommendation –Giving to Charity …..

I have had several fairly low value items that might well be suitable for a charity shop but would be difficult/impossible for me to carry from our sótano out to my car to take to said shop – I still have items like smallish rugs and a “bean bag” that someone could maybe use for their pet. 5-10€ would be about their mark.

By selling them on Dígamextra someone else could do the carrying and we’d both get some benefit.

In my case I’d pass the money onto my local Cudeca shop in Torre del Mar.

So a lower limit on selling items, by all means, but perhaps 10€ (with an ONO?)

Recommendation –2017 Gardening Advice

The Florena Team and our wonderful chickens would like to wish you all peace, contentment and a fabulously floriferous New Year!

January Jobs in our Mediterranean Gardens.

After all that over-indulgence, doesn’t it feel great to be back out in the garden doing a little bit of gentle exercise! With recent rains and cooler, damper weather, the soil is wonderfully workable and it’s a great time for planting in general.

Pruning: It’s the turn of roses. In mild winters roses can often carry on flowering right through and it always seems a crime to prune off flowers! But, like all plants, roses need their rest period and they need to be tempted to go to sleep. So, sometime during this month, prune floribunda and hardy tea roses hard – down to say 10 – 15cm high. Always prune to an outward facing bud and clear away any dead or crossing wood. Old-fashioned shrub roses, which form more natural-looking bushes will not need this; they often just want a little minor tidying. And climbing roses should have their main framework of 3 or 5 branches left intact; prune back to 2 buds all side growth from these main leaders.

Wisteria, bougainvillea and grapevines also need pruning now if not already tackled. Take care not to prune off any fat flower buds forming on the wisteria. See my article with pruning details. http://www.viverosflorena.com/#!wonderful-wisteria/cwzc

Roses: Going back to roses, this is a great month to plant them and the cheapest way to build up a selection is buying bare-rooted roses. They settle in very quickly and will be full of flower by springtime. This month we will be taking delivery of a huge stock of bare-roots – check out our web page for details.

Grasses: Cut ornamental grasses back hard during this month or next. New spikes will soon push through.

Planting: Carry on planting, especially larger items and bulk plantings, carpeting etc. It’s also a good time to plant soft fruits – have a go with raspberries, gooseberries, blueberries, cranberries and the currants. All are easier than you think given summertime shade and some need an acid compost. Or try goji berries for a change. Established currants and berries should be pruned now.

It’s still not too late to plant spring-flowering bulbs and all ours are now reduced by 50% for this month only.

Dead-Head: Winter bedding to stop it setting seed and slowing flowering.

Cuttings: Take hardwood cuttings of deciduous shrubs now; pot them up and when spring weather arrives, they will start to show signs of growth.

Vegetables: It’s a great time for sowing/planting peas, beans, cabbage, beetroot, carrot, radish, spinach, pak choi, chard etc.

And we now have mushroom packs in stock. These are really fun and easy to grow. They come complete – you only need to open and add water. You’ll get three consecutive harvests out of each box, €9

Wind Damage: After a strong blow, don’t forget to check that new plantings, in particular, are still well anchored. Firm them in and make sure tree supports are solid. A plant that rocks around at root level will never establish well.

From your Armchair: If bad weather hits, it doesn’t have to stop you gardening! Sort out your seed box, order new; clean and sharpen your tools, clear out the shed and, best of all, make great plans!

Plant of the Month: Has to be the lovely camellia. Acid soil and shade are its requirements, so they´re elegantly perfect patio plants.

Although I have no inclination whatsoever to register on sites such as Facebook I’ve found it is possible to view certain business pages and glean useful information – just another form of advertising. Just click on “not now” when the “log in / sign up” pops up in the middle of your screen and you can browse the site. So you can click any Facebook link here on Dígamextra and find out all about unwanted dogs, restaurants – whatever!

A wonderful opportunity to learn the fundamentals of drawing through observation and measurement using a variety of drawing materials.
Graded graphite pencils and sticks, charcoal pencils and sticks, and blending tools.
Learn how to sharpen drawing tools and how to draw with erasers.
An informative and fun course that also encourages a creative approach.
You will get messy so old clothes and an apron are essentials.
