NOTICE!
Submissions for posting in sections below
must include this info or they will be returned !!!
Sender's First Name / Nearest Town

Note: You may additionally include a location to meet or pickup,
but your location is required in any case. If selling an item from a location different from where you reside, you must include both.
For example: "...Buyer collects in Nerja, John/Malaga"
Why? DigameXtra covers a large area. So, for example, readers in Motril are unlikely to make recommendations, or call about most for-sale items, if they know you are located in Coin. As for including both locations in for-sale posts, the buyer needs to know where to collect the item, but they will also want to know where you are from in case there is a problem. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Interpreter: The holidays are over and hospitals and health centers are back to full strength again. So, that appointment you have been waiting for, will soon be arriving in your inbox, mailbox or telephone.
Whilst most doctors speak a little English, they much prefer and in some cases, insist, that you have an interpreter with you. That could be me!

AND I provide transport if needed.

The pound has fallen to a 37-year low against the dollar: After Liz Truss’s first full day as Prime Minister, the pound sank to its lowest level against the US dollar since 1985.
– The latest exchange rate published by the Bank of England, $1.1467 per pound sterling on 7 September, is lower than the depths plumbed during the turbulent first weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and far lower than anything experienced during the 2008-09 financial crisis.
– Though the pound briefly fell to $1.1492 in March 2020, it stayed below $1.17 for only a single day. As of 7 September, the pound has remained below that benchmark for seven consecutive working days.
– The pound has lost 15 per cent of its value against the dollar so far this year, and 29 per cent of its value since the UK voted to leave the European Union in June 2016.

EUROPE

ECB hikes interest rates by record 75bp and slashes growth forecasts:
– Lagarde explains that today’s 75 basis-point interest rate hike is a “major step”. It will frontload the transition from the prevailing highly accommodative level of policy rates towards levels that will return inflation to 2% in an timely way.
– Lagarde also explains that the ECB expects to raise interest rate further to dampen demand, and guard against a persistent upward shift in inflation expectations.
– She then explains that the ECB has lifted its inflation forecasts and slashed its growth projections. Full article: https://www.theguardian.com/business/live/2022/sep/08/markets-pound-uk-energy-relief-package-inflation-ecb-rate-rise-business-live

Facebook Engineers- “We Have No Idea Where We Keep All Your Personal Data Or Who Has Access To It”:
– In March, two veteran Facebook engineers found themselves grilled about the company’s sprawling data collection operations in a hearing for the ongoing lawsuit over the mishandling of private user information stemming from the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
– The hearing, a transcript of which was recently unsealed, was aimed at resolving one crucial issue: What information, precisely, does Facebook store about us, and where is it? The engineers’ response will come as little relief to those concerned with the company’s stewardship of billions of digitized lives: They don’t know. “I don’t believe there’s a single person that exists who could answer that question,” replied Eugene Zarashaw, a Facebook engineering director. “It would take a significant team effort to answer that question.”
– In the March 2022 hearing, Zarashaw and Steven Elia, a software engineering manager, described Facebook as a data-processing apparatus so complex that it defies understanding from within. The hearing amounted to two high-ranking engineers at one of the most powerful and resource-flush engineering outfits in history describing their product as an unknowable machine.
– The special master at times seemed in disbelief, as when he questioned the engineers over whether any documentation existed for a particular Facebook subsystem. “Someone must have a diagram that says this is where this data is stored,” he said, according to the transcript. Zarashaw responded: “We have a somewhat strange engineering culture compared to most where we don’t generate a lot of artifacts during the engineering process. Effectively the code is its own design document often.” He quickly added, “For what it’s worth, this was terrifying to me when I first joined as well.”
– “We do not have an adequate level of control and explainability over how our systems use data, and thus we can’t confidently make controlled policy changes or external commitments such as ‘we will not use X data for Y purpose,’” a leaked 2021 document read.
– The fundamental problem, according to the engineers in the hearing, is that Facebook’s sprawl has made it impossible to know what it consists of anymore; the company never bothered to cultivate institutional knowledge of how each of these component systems works, what they do, or who’s using them. There is no documentation of what happens to your data once it’s uploaded, because that’s just never been something the company does, the two explained. (How could this possibly have happened? Here is a hint. Super-computers running Artificial Intelligence (AI) can calculate faster, and recognize much more complex patterns, than a roomful of human brains. All of this make perfect sense to AI. Only AI is capable of understanding all the inter-relationships. Fakebook has become Zuckerberg’s Frankenstein. That’s why Zuck has moved on, he’s now focused on the Metaverse, lest he be consumed by his creation that he no longer controls. -Ed.) Apple updates its AppleCare+ support service to offer unlimited repairs, but retains high co-pays:
– Apple will no longer limit how frequently AppleCare+ owners can pay Apple for supported product repairs. As spotted by MacRumors yesterday, the company updated the AppleCare+ subscription support service to offer “unlimited” repairs across its current product line. That’s much more flexible than the two repairs per year previously offered.
– According to the fine print, this only covers “physical damage from handling due to unexpected and unintentional events.” And there are associated service fees. Fixing broken glass on an iPhone, for example, will cost you $29 in addition to your monthly subscription fee. And you can pay $299 for fixing accidental Mac damage, on top of the unit’s subscription cost. (Evidently I have been way undercharging for Mac Repairs! -Ed.) Fakebook Influence Across Internet Diminishing:
– The disappearing login is the latest sign of Facebook’s diminishing influence on the internet following more than a decade of spectacular growth. In the past year, the company’s business has been beset by Apple’s iOS privacy change, which made it harder to target ads, a deteriorating economy, competition from short-video service TikTok, and reputational damage after a whistleblower leaked documents showing Facebook knew of the harm caused by many of its products.
– Until about a month ago, shoppers on Dell’s website looking for a new laptop could log in using their Facebook credentials to avoid creating a new username and password. That option is now gone.
– Dell isn’t alone. Other big brands, including Best Buy, Ford Motor, Pottery Barn, Nike, Patagonia, Match and Amazon’s video-streaming service Twitch have removed the ability to sign on with Facebook. It’s a marked departure from just a few years ago, when the Facebook login was plastered all over the internet, often alongside buttons that let you sign in with Google, Twitter or LinkedIn.
– Jen Felch, Dell’s chief digital and chief information officer, said people stopped using social logins, for reasons that include concerns over security, privacy and data-sharing. EUROPE

Putin threatens to tear up fragile Ukraine grain deal AND cut off all deliveries of gas, oil, and coal to Europe in bellicose speech:
– Vladimir Putin has said he wants to revise a fragile international agreement to allow the export of Ukrainian grain in a move that could threaten the deal and revive fears of a renewed Russian naval blockade in the Black Sea. Putin claimed that grain leaving Ukraine was being exported not to poor countries, but instead to the EU. He claimed that only two ships out of 87 had gone to developing countries.
– The divisive statements came during a speech in which Putin also threatened to cut off all deliveries of gas, oil, and coal to Europe if they imposed a price cap on Russian energy imports. Recalling a Russian fairytale, he said that Europeans could “freeze like the wolf’s tail”. In his speech, he portrayed Russia as the victim, saying that western sanctions had “replaced the pandemic” as a threat to the world order. “I am speaking of the west’s sanctions fever, with its brazen, aggressive attempt to impose models of behaviour on other countries, to deprive them of their sovereignty and subordinate them to their will,” he said.
– On the threat to stop delivering oil and gas, Putin said: “Will there be any political decisions that contradict the contracts? Yes, we just won’t fulfil them. We will not supply anything at all if it contradicts our interests,” he said, according to a Reuters translation of his remarks. “We will not supply gas, oil, coal, heating oil – we will not supply anything.”

EU plans to cap Russian gas price as Putin warns West of winter freeze:
– The European Union proposed a price cap on Russian gas on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin threatened to cut off all energy supplies if it took such a step, raising the risk of rationing in some of the world’s richest countries this winter.
– The escalating standoff could drive up sky-high European gas prices further, adding to already eyewatering bills EU governments are paying to stop their energy providers collapsing and prevent cash-strapped customers freezing in the cold months ahead.

Austria limits the price of electricity to 10 cents per kWh for households until mid 2024: Austria has decided to limit the country’s electricity prices for a period of 18 months to help households deal with high energy prices, the Executive reported on Wednesday. Specifically, the country’s government has decided to set a price of 10 cents per kWh for the first 2,900 kWh of consumption by each household. This figure represents 80% of the average consumption of Austrian households, as pointed out by the Austrian Chancellor, the Christian Democrat Karl Nehammer. “Nobody in Austria should not be able to cover their basic electricity needs,” the president said, explaining that the price cap will come into force in December 2022 and will last until mid-2024.

Tennis News- Nick Kyrgios goes berserk, breaking two rackets after U.S. Open defeat:
– Those who attended the Nick Kyrgios-Karen Khachanov U.S. Open quarterfinal match at Arthur Ashe Stadium were thoroughly entertained during Khachanov’s 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (7-3), 6-4 victory that ended early Wednesday morning.
– But truth be told, the packed house got the real show right after the match ended and both competitors shook the umpire’s hand. It was then when Kyrgios, who has a penchant for making a spectacle of himself, went absolutely ballistic and took out his anger on his rackets. The Australian bashed the racket in his hand until it broke, then calmly went to his bag, grabbed another racket, and proceeded to smash it as well. TECH

Cybercriminals have Found Another Way To Bypass 2-Factor Security:
– A new phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) toolkit dubbed EvilProxy is being advertised on the criminal underground as a means for threat actors to bypass two-factor authentication (2FA) protections employed against online services.
– The platform generates phishing links that are nothing but cloned pages designed to compromise user accounts associated with Apple iCloud, Facebook, GoDaddy, GitHub, Google, Dropbox, Instagram, Microsoft, NPM, PyPI, RubyGems, Twitter, Yahoo, and Yandex, among others.
– It’s offered on a subscription basis per service for a time period of 10, 20, or 31 days, with the kit available for $400 a month and accessed over the TOR anonymity network after the payment is arranged manually with an operator on Telegram. Attacks against Google accounts for a month, in contrast, cost up to $600.
– The development is further an indication that adversaries are upgrading their attack arsenal to orchestrate sophisticated phishing campaigns targeting users in a manner that can defeat existing security safeguards. SPACE

Here’s Webb’s View of the Tarantula Nebula: The James Webb Space Telescope turned its detectors towards the Large Magellanic Cloud about 161,000 lightyears away to take a look at 30 Doradus, more commonly known as the Tarantula Nebula. JWST’s exceptional infrared view has now revealed thousands of never-before-seen young stars in this stellar nursery, as well incredible views of the wispy, dusty filaments and the impressive collection of massive older stars.
– There is so much detail in this image, if you download the full-sized version, you can pan and zoom around to see details on stars and the surrounding dust and gas. And there are even other, more distant galaxies dotting the background. If you have a big screen, even better, as it takes up over 14,000 x 8,000 pixels. Or, take a look at the video tour. DoctorLaptop Alert- Update Your Routers: Several large local internet providers sent out router updates this past week. In order for the updates to install, you need to turn off your router, and if it is a 2 unit fiber router setup, then you turn off both. Wait a full minute, then turn them back on. It will take a few minutes for the update to install and the connection to reconnect. If you think your internet has slowed recently, this may help. It is common that a router update waiting to be installed slows router performance. Doing this process periodically is a good habit to get into. Router updates are usually released late evening on the first or last Sunday of the month. This weekend my normally fast 1000MB/s fiber internet connection seemed slow, so I tested it and only had 90MB/s! I restarted the router as explained, and then it tested at 980MB/s. Problem solved.

SPAIN

Díaz obtains the support of Sánchez to intervene in the price of the shopping basket:
– Although criticism of the measure is made in private, in public the Government closes ranks regarding the idea of the vice president Yolanda Diaz to implement a maximum price for different products in the shopping basket (a proposed batch of common items considered the minimum necessary for an average consumer, exact details still under discussion). The Minister of Territorial Policy and spokesperson for the Executive, Isabel Rodríguez, highlighted in the press conference produced after the Council of Ministers that President of the Government Pedro Sánchez agrees with this initiative, which has sparked criticism from distribution employers.
– Yolanda Díaz has insisted on the need to implement this initiative. In her words, this limit would be “legal” and will take as a reference the limit that France implemented in 2011, under the mandate of Nicolás Sarkozy. “The president is fully focused on tackling inflation, the country’s main problem. We are studying measures that are legal and have had good effects in France. “It would be an agreement”, explained Díaz.
– “It goes according to the logic of this Government, which wants to reach an agreement with the distributors and consumers,” said Díaz, who, however, did not want to clarify whether the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, knew of Sánchez intention to carry out this measure. In previous statements, Planas has questioned the implementation of maximum and minimum prices for products. COSTA DEL SOL

Uber, Cabify and Bolt can continue to operate in Malaga and on the Costa from October, but only under certain conditions:
– Companies which hire out vehicles with drivers, such as Uber, Cabify and Bolt in Malaga and elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, will be able to continue operating from 1 October as the Junta de Andalucía is preparing to regulate the sector.
– The government in Madrid has told regional authorities that they must draw up regulations or the ride-hailing companies will only be able to operate between different municipalities and not within a town or city. For example, if that were the case, these drivers would be able to transport clients from Malaga Airport to Torremolinos, but not from the airport to the city centre. MALAGA

Pirate TV Operation Busted- Arrested for selling paid audiovisual content over the internet and via satellite from Alicante and Málaga:
– The National Police have arrested a cybercriminal in the Alicante town of Denia who illegally sold paid audiovisual content over the Internet and via satellite, and it is estimated that the economic damage created amounts to more than 210,000 euros. It had as its centre of operations the provinces of Alicante and Malaga.
– The investigators detected several channels in an instant messaging application dedicated to the illicit commercialisation of paid audiovisual content, without the necessary authorisation or permissions, and had more than 2,300 subscribers.
– The investigations revealed that the alleged perpetrator had a strong technological infrastructure that managed the websites and app to disseminate his illegal services. These pages displayed articles providing all visitors with the necessary knowledge to illegally view paid content. They also allowed users to access multimedia content illegally using mobile phones and mobile TVs with Internet access.
– As a result of the investigation, it was found that this app had reached more than 50,000 downloads.
– After analysing the pages, the agents observed that they offered the possibility of subscribing to the television channels they offered, the price of which varied depending on the duration of the package contracted and the number of devices on which the user wanted to watch them.
– It was identified that the technological infrastructure through which this crime was committed was remotely administered from the United Kingdom. The detainee has been charged with crimes against intellectual property, against television broadcasting services of a conditional nature and for defrauding electricity. Source, Spanish:

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA

Aqualia warns that this Wednesday there may be occasional water supply cuts in Benajarafe and Valle-Niza: {Translation}
– The Vélez-Málaga Municipal Water Service company will carry out repair work on the general supply network that runs along the N-340 between 8.00 am and 5.00 pm, in order to optimise the infrastructure and guarantee the quality of the service on the west coast of the municipality.
– Aqualia, the company that manages the Municipal Water Service of Vélez-Málaga, has informed that tomorrow, Wednesday 7 September, due to the execution of various repair works on the general supply network that runs along the N-340 in the western part of the municipality, there may be occasional water supply problems in different areas of the municipality.
– The affected area will be the western coast of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, specifically the villages of Benajarafe and Valle-Niza. The repair work will last from approximately 8.00 am to 5.00 pm.
– Aqualia advises the public to ensure that no taps are left running during the hours when the supply is suspended, in order to avoid unnecessary water loss, and to avoid using electrical appliances, such as washing machines or dishwashers, in order to avoid incidents in the internal installations during the restoration of the service. Once the service has been restored, it is recommended that the water is left to circulate for a few minutes to avoid the possible residual impurities.

SEVILLE

The “worst summer in history” closes a hundred bars and restaurants in Seville: {Translation, summary}
– In the province of Seville around a hundred bars and restaurants have closed their doors for good or are in the process of transferring premises after the end of August, according to calculations by the Seville employers’ association for the hotel and catering trade. “The unemployment figures released by the INE on 1 September confirm that the economic situation for the hotel and catering industry in Seville is unsustainable,” the employers’ association stated in a press release. The figures provided by the association indicate that August has left almost 1,350 more unemployed in the province, “being the second sector that has lost the most jobs this summer”.
– All this confirms, in the opinion of the employers’ association, that “the summer of 2022 has been one of the worst for the Seville hotel and catering industry”. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/sevilla/centenar-bares-restaurantes-sevilla-cierran-puertas-tras-20220905121513-nts.html

However, as indicated by the Government of Gibraltar in a note, all of the necessary resources will still be available to the captain of the Port for the operations of response and recovery that are being developed.

Truss Drafts £130 Billion Plan to Freeze UK Energy Bills:
– Incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss has drafted plans to fix annual electricity and gas bills for a typical UK household at or below the current level of £1,971 ($2,300).
– In discussions with her team and government officials in recent days, Truss has settled on a mechanism that will avert the massive increase in energy bills that is due to kick in at the start of next month under the existing pricing system, according to officials and advisers to Truss who were briefed on the plan. The policy could cost as much as £130 billion over the next 18 months, according to policy documents seen by Bloomberg.
– Energy bills in the UK were due to jump 80% from October to £3,548 a year for the average household, forcing many poorer families to choose between heating their homes and other basics. Under the plans drawn up by Truss’s team, that pricing regime will effectively be abolished and the energy regulator Ofgem will be sidelined.
– Instead, ministers will set a new unit price that households will pay for electricity and gas. A spokesman for Truss declined to comment on the specifics of the plan, while campaign officials confirmed the details were accurate. Scotland to freeze rent and rail fares to help with cost of living crisis:
– Scotland is set to bring in emergency laws to freeze rents and help tenants weather the worsening cost of living crisis. Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister, announced the measure as she set out plans to deal with the “humanitarian emergency” caused by soaring energy bills. “We will take immediate action to protect tenants in the private and social renting sectors,” Ms Sturgeon said.
– Rail fares on ScotRail will also be frozen until at least March 2023 and the Scottish child payment will increase to £25 a week for each child from November, the first minister said. The universal provision of free school meals will also be extended to all pupils in primary six and seven. EU Lays Out New Hurdles For Russian Visa Applicants: The European Commission laid out Tuesday the new hurdles facing Russian travellers seeking EU entry visas, in the latest punitive measures taken in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Ministers from EU member states agreed last week to suspend the 2007 EU-Russia visa facilitation deal, stopping short of an outright travel ban but asking Brussels to draw up new rules. On Tuesday, EU home affairs commissioner Ylva Johansson revealed the proposed new regime, which is expected to win quick approval from member state capitals in the days ahead. Naked ‘Nevermind’ baby loses lawsuit against Nirvana after judge dismisses child pornography complaint:
– A federal court in California has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that the cover artwork of rock band Nirvana’s 1991 album “Nevermind” constituted child pornography. Spencer Elden, 31, who appeared naked on the album cover as a baby, sued the band over alleged “commercial child sexual exploitation.” However, his lawsuit was dismissed on Friday when a judge ruled that Elden had filed his complaint after the 10-year statute of limitations had expired.
– The cover of “Nevermind,” on which the infant Elden appeared, swimming underwater, his eyes fixed on a dollar bill, has become one of the most enduring images in rock music.
– In the original complaint, filed August 24, 2021, Elden’s attorneys said the image was pornographic and that he has suffered “lifelong damages” as a result of his involvement. Full article: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/09/05/entertainment/spencer-elden-nirvana-ruling-scli-intl/index.html

Tennis News- Nadal hints at extended break after U.S. Open exit:
– Rafa Nadal said he needed to “fix things” and was unsure about his return to competitive tennis after his bid for a men’s record-extending 23rd Grand Slam title ended in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday. American Frances Tiafoe, who had lost both previous meetings against the 36-year-old left-hander, stunned the second seed in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.
– “I need to fix things, life, then I don’t know when I (am) going to come back. I (am) going to try to be ready mentally. When I feel that I will be ready to compete again, I will be there.”
– Nadal, who is expecting his first child with wife Mery Perello later this year, is scheduled to turn out for Team Europe during the Sept. 23-25 Laver Cup in London alongside his great rivals Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Windows 12 Could Arrive in 2024, New Versions To Be Released Every 3 Years + New Win 11 Updates Soon:
– Two new releases of Windows 11 may end up right on top of one another, according to tweets from a noted Microsoft leaker known for accuracy. Microsoft is currently scheduling Windows 11 22H2 for September 20, according to Windows Central. But the first “Moment” (new term for incremental Windows system upgrades between new version releases) of Windows 11 22H2 could drop soon thereafter, in October. “Moments” were part of an adjustment to Microsoft’s roadmap that will see major feature releases scheduled for every three years, implying that Windows 12 will be due in 2024. Windows Central, which disclosed the changes, noted that the “Moments” would be added to the schedule to help fill in the gaps. Full article:

SCAMS

The latest WhatsApp scam police are warning about: {Translation}
– Spain recorded more than 305,000 computer crimes last year in 2021. The theft of personal data on the Internet is skyrocketing, with one victim every two minutes, and the way cybercriminals act is diversifying, with WhatsApp as one of the favourite channels to try to get hold of any personal or financial data that opens the door to defraud or coerce users.
– Fake updates, malware distribution, account hijacking, false commercial promises from different brands. There are many forms of WhatsApp scams. The latest is related to identity theft, which has already caused quite a few people serious problems and threatens our family finances.
– National Police has detected “a type of scam via WhatsApp” in which “fraudsters contact women and deceive them by pretending to be their children to ask them, urgently, for money in order to deal with an immediate problem”.
***Scams of up to 3,000 euros***
– The screenshots shown by the authorities show the modus operandi of the scam. The victim receives a message from a phone number not have in his address book. The scammers claim to be one of your children, who has supposedly been forced to contract a new phone line because their usual line has been blocked (something that should make us directly suspicious).
– The scam, initiated by impersonation, goes on to construct a scenario of distress and an urgent need for money, asking the parent to come to the rescue. Such details should never be given to a person who is not willing to agree to a call first to verify that they are who they say they are, and even less so if we are dealing with the amounts shown by the police in their example. Almost 3,000 euros is what is claimed in these WhatsApp messages. Requesting info such as the IBAN of the account, the name and surname of the account holder or the card pin number through this medium is not reasonable and should always put us on alert so as not to fall into scams.

SPAIN

Why mortgage payments in Spain could increase by up to €120 a month yet property purchases continue to rise:
– The Euribor rate at the end of August was 1.25 percent – its highest value in a decade and a rate not seen since 2012 after long periods of negative values – which could in turn increase monthly mortgage payments by thousands of Euros depending on your rate, length, and type of mortgage.
– Yet, despite the interest rates pushing up the Euribor and by extension mortgage repayments, and the inflation-triggered economic malaise affecting most of Europe, property purchases in Spain continue to rise. The mortgage industry had its best June performance in 12 years, giving out 42,767 loans – 12 percent more than June of 2021, according to the figures from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE). TORROX

The farmers of Torrox begin to irrigate with reclaimed water from two treatment plants, La Viñuela reservoir expected to totally run out of water for irrigation next month: {Translation}
– The persistent drought that is plaguing the Axarquia region is worsening as September progresses with no prospect of the longed-for rains. Faced with this panorama, the Junta de Andalucía has just a few weeks to communicate the news that nobody wants to read or hear, but which the eastern region is awaiting with resignation. From next October, barring a miracle, there will be no water from the La Viñuela reservoir for irrigation. The little that remains in the reservoir will be reserved for supplying the approximately 180,000 inhabitants of 14 of the 31 municipalities.
– Faced with this apocalyptic and desolate panorama, the irrigation communities are still trying to juggle to keep their farms going. Those who have reclaimed water at their disposal feel fortunate, as a few years ago there were more than a few farmers who were reluctant to use it. GRANADA

Rio Durcal Water System- The ministry of Water adds 200km of channels, improved the 663 previous: {Translation, summary}
– The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development continues to make progress in the cleaning of riverbeds and ravines in order to prevent the consequences of the autumn and winter rains. During her visit to the actions being carried out in the province of Granada, specifically in the Dúrcal river, the Minister Carmen Crespo announced that “the Andalusian Government, as part of its water policy, is going to add 200 kilometres more channels in 2023 to the 663 kilometres already improved, which will take us to a total of 863 kilometres”. In that line of sustainability, the counselor has gone a step further and has pointed out that in the andalusian Government, “we know the restoration of the channels not only help to protect populations as in the case of roads and heavy rains, but that will turn the rivers into spaces of natural living that contribute to the rural world”. Health detects mosquitoes positive for West Nile Virus in a locality in Seville: {Translation, summary} 05/09/2022 17:57
– Doñana Biological Station have informed the Town Council of La Puebla del Río (Seville) of the appearance of some mosquitoes positive for the Nile virus in its municipal district after a series of studies carried out in areas of the marshes.
– In this sense, the City Council stresses that it continues with its fumigation work and the shock plan applied “with the aim of preventing the expansion of populations of this type of mosquitoes in order to preserve the health of citizens”.
– However, at the same time, the Council recommends a series of preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as using mosquito nets on windows and doors; trying not to stay outdoors between dusk and dawn; trying to leave the lights off, avoiding strong perfumes and wearing clothes that cover the skin as much as possible. Liz Truss to Become Next U.K. Prime Minister, Succeeding Boris Johnson: {Updated Sept. 5, 2022 10:47 am ET}
– U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss won the race to lead the ruling Conservative Party and become Britain’s next prime minister, taking the helm of a nation heading into an economic storm.
– Ms. Truss, 47, will formally replace Boris Johnson as prime minister on Tuesday. In the leadership race, she touted herself as a low-tax libertarian who will shrink the British state and revitalize a moribund economy, much like the U.K.’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, did in the 1980. “I campaigned as a Conservative and I will govern as a Conservative,” she said after the victory.
– Ms. Truss defeated her rival, former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, by 57% to 43%. Some 172,000 Conservative Party members were eligible to vote in the contest, which was triggered by Mr. Johnson’s resignation as party leader in July amid a revolt by cabinet members and top officials following a series of scandals. UK pubs face closure crisis unless price of pint soars to £20, CAMRA chief warns:
– The cost of a pint will need to increase to around ‘£15 to £20’ if pubs are to survive the cost of living crisis without help from the government. That’s according to Tom Stainer, the Chief Executive of real ale campaign group CAMRA, who told the Daily Star that pub landlords are facing a five to six-time increase in their running costs that threatens to put a huge number of venues out of business.
– Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Tom said the costs for pubs were skyrocketing: “We’re seeing pubs where their energy costs are going up by not just a little bit – we’re talking 500% to 600%.” “What you can say with surety is you can’t possibly pass on these energy increases and you can’t increase the pint by 500%,” he said. EUROPE

EU races to help industry as Russian gas halt rattles markets:
– Europe’s gas prices surged, its share prices slid and the euro sank to a 20-year low on Monday after Russia stopped pumping gas via a major supply route, sending another economic shock wave through the European Union as it struggles to recover from the pandemic.
– EU governments are pushing through packages worth billions of dollars to prevent utilities being crushed by a liquidity crunch and to protect households from soaring energy bills, after Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom (GAZP.MM) said it would stop pumping gas via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline due to a fault.
– A host of European power distributors have already collapsed and some major generators could be at risk, hit by caps that limit the prices rises they can pass to consumers or caught out by hedging bets, with gas prices now 400% more than a year ago. OPEC+ stresses the market with the announcement of a production cut of 100,000 barrels of oil per day in October:
– The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, which together form the group known as OPEC+, have decided that their joint production will be reduced by 100,000 barrels of oil per day during the month of October, as reported Monday to the conclusion of a multilateral summit between the members of the coalition.
– This decision means reversing the movement agreed in August, when the group decided to increase production by 100,000 barrels per day during September. The cartel has stressed that the increase agreed a month ago “was only aimed at the month of September.”

A mobile phone app can detect COVID in people’s voices with “potentially high precision” using artificial intelligence (AI), according to researchers: An AI model was said to be 89% accurate and is cheap to use, which means it could be adopted in low-income countries where PCR tests are more expensive. Results can be provided in less than a minute and may be a “significant improvement” on the accuracy of lateral flow tests, scientists said.

Another Huge Cloud Hack?- Alibaba Cloud Data Breach Exposes Over 2 Billion TikTok Users’ Information Say Researchers, TikTok Denies:
– Popular short-form social video service TikTok denied reports that it was breached by a hacking group, after it claimed to have gained access to an insecure cloud server.
– The denial follows alleged reports of a hack that surfaced on the Breach Forums message board on September 3, with the threat actor noting that the server holds 2.05 billion records in a humongous 790GB database. “Who would have thought that TikTok would decide to store all their internal backend source code on one Alibaba Cloud instance using a trashy password?,” the hacking group known as BlueHornet (aka AgainstTheWest) tweeted over the weekend.
– Bob Diachenko, threat intelligence researcher at Security Discovery, said the breach is “real” and that the data is likely to have originated from “Hangzhou Julun Network Technology Co., Ltd rather than TikTok.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/09/tiktok-denies-data-breach-reportedly.html

MONDAY- Strange lights surprise early this morning crossing Malaga’s skies: {Translation}
– Strange lights have surprised the early hours of Monday 5 September crossing the skies of Malaga. Witnesses from different parts of the province, from Malaga capital to sailors and fishermen from La Caleta de Vélez-Málaga, posted videos on social networks of an unusual sighting. Two intense spotlights crossed the sky at a moderate speed that allowed them to observe them for minutes.
– “We have never seen anything like it”, the sailors commented when they saw the strange phenomenon over the coast of Axarquia. The response came shortly afterwards. The Space Frontier Twitter account had reported that a SpaceX rocket would be launched tonight. “Mission 40 of the year for a Falcon 9 tonight with the launch of Starlinks group 4-20 and one more companion,” explained @FronteraSpacial.
– Liftoff was at 4:09 Spanish time and, according to what they said, the rockets’ launches and re-entries produce this effect and are seen in this particular way in the night sky.
– These phenomena are repeated with some frequency. On 22 June last, the re-entry into the atmosphere of the wreckage of the Chinese CZ-2F space rocket left mysterious trails that were visible from several points in Spain and Portugal, including Malaga. British Pound Falls to Lowest Level Since 1985 as U.K. Economic Pain Mounts: {Updated Sept. 5, 2022 8:38 am ET}
– The British pound slid to its lowest level against the U.S. dollar since 1985, a reflection of the U.K.’s dire economic situation. Investors are braced for sterling to weaken even further to a nadir not seen in more than two centuries of trading across the Atlantic.
– The pound fell as low as $1.1443, the lowest level since 1985, according to FactSet, before recovering to trade up 0.1% midday London time Monday. Sterling’s descent is in part a side effect of the relentless U.S. dollar rally, which has driven both the euro and Japanese yen to multidecade lows in recent days. Spain’s economy moves towards recession on slight growth in services in August, according to PMI: {Translation. MADRID, 5 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS)}
– Business activity in Spain’s services sector expanded in August, although the pace of growth was weak, according to S&P Global’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which stood at 50.6 in the eighth month of the year, down from 53.8 in the previous month.
– “Spain’s economy headed towards stagnation in August, as the services sector followed the trend of the manufacturing sector by registering only marginal growth,” warned Paul Smith, economic director of S&P Global Market Intelligence.
– He warned that businesses fear instability and inflation will affect customers, adding to concerns that the economy is heading for a “winter of challenges and a possible recession”.
– Companies noted that sales both at home and abroad were lower. New export orders fell for the second month in a row and at a steeper pace than that recorded for new orders overall.
– Prices, meanwhile, continued to show signs of “high inflation”. However, the S&P survey concludes that prices paid for inputs such as final prices charged “increased at slower rates”.
– “Fuel, energy and wages remained the main sources of higher prices, which generally increased in August for the 27th consecutive month. However, the rate of inflation maintained its recent downward trend, falling to its lowest level since October,” the firm’s report concluded. Drinking Reclaimed Waste Water In Spain & UK?: {Translation, summary}
– Spain does not contemplate the consumption of reclaimed waste water despite the drought. Spain has the technical resources necessary to produce quality drinking water for human consumption from reclaimed wastewater, a possibility that is not currently contemplated by national legislation and which experts describe as “apocalyptic”, despite the worrying drought. With 26% less rainfall than usual and the reservoirs at just over 35% of their capacity, experts consulted by EFE say that in our country “no apocalyptic situation is in sight” that would make it advisable to make wastewater drinkable and that this would be almost “the last resort” to combat the lack of supply in case of need.
– This is not the case in the UK, which is experiencing one of the driest and harshest summers in its history, to the extent that the authorities have advised the public to be “less apprehensive” about drinking wastewater if necessary in the future to cope with droughts.

MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin

We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.
Naturally, we care about our planet and feel the need to help reduce the sheer volumes of plastics waste that are generated daily around the globe. Presently, we are minimizing the usage of plastic materials in our production while seeking alternative forms of packaging. To help reduce pollution we are asking all local customers to recycle or reuse their Moonette skincare containers, and offering a small discount on future purchases to customers recycling containers.

Private Health Insurance Advice Needed: I had a heart attack approximately one and a half years ago. I have one stent fitted but I am exhausted most of the time, whereas before this incident i could work 10 hours a day. Now I can barely work and love working. The public system is struggling as we all know. I am now 70 years old and desperately need private health insurance. If there is anyone out there reading this and knows how I can get private health with this preexisting condition I would be most grateful. I am a Spanish citizen (I believe this should say resident, not citizen. -Ed.) from Ireland, if you can help me at all please contact me on 625210990 or holisticclinic@gmail.com. whatsapp is fine.

MALAGA

Malaga, on notice yellow by high temperatures and terral this Monday:
{Translation}
– Although August is now behind us, the heat refuses to leave the province of Malaga. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated a yellow warning for this Monday in the Costa del Sol and Valle del Guadalhorce area of the province of Malaga for high temperatures and terral. The alert will begin at 13:00 hours and will remain active until 20:59 hours on 5 September.
– For that day, temperatures are expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius, accompanied by land-based winds. In the capital it is expected to reach 35 degrees this Monday, as well as in other municipalities such as Estepona, Coín and Cártama.
– The mercury will be milder in coastal areas such as Marbella and Mijas, with a maximum of 31 degrees; and in the interior, where Antequera could also reach 31 degrees, but Ronda will not go above 29 degrees. ENERGY CRISIS

Russia announces indefinite suspension of EU gas deliveries- Russia blames the EU for the cessation of shipments of gas through the gas pipeline Nord Stream 1: {Translation}
– The Russian government has asserted that it is the European Union that must repair the Nord Stream 1 pipeline so that natural gas shipments to Germany can resume.
– “If the Europeans take this totally absurd decision and refuse to maintain their systems, or rather the systems belonging to Gazprom, it is not Gazprom’s fault, but the fault of the politicians who decide on sanctions,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
– Peskov said it was the Europeans who are contractually obliged to maintain the systems of Russia’s state-owned Gazprom, which on Friday announced the immediate and indefinite suspension of gas deliveries due to a fault at a compressor station.
– Germany has disputed this reasoning, as has gas equipment manufacturer Siemens, and considers that such leaks are commonplace and do not require a halt to gas shipments. Thus, Berlin believes that Moscow has breached its contracts by ceasing shipments.
– However, Peskov has assured that Gazprom remains a reliable supplier. “These so-called politicians are causing their own citizens to die of heart attacks when they see the electricity bills. When it gets colder, the situation will be even worse,” he argued.
– As for the war in Ukraine, Peskov assured that Russia is ready to negotiate with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on how to meet Russia’s conditions for the end of the “special military operation”. These conditions remain the same. “Of course. The operation is underway. All objectives will be achieved,” he reiterated.

SPORTS

F1 News- Dutch Grand Prix- Max Verstappen wins home race to extend title lead:
– Max Verstappen’s serene march to a second title continued with a comfortable victory in an eventful Dutch Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver had to pass Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes after a late safety-car period to take his 10th win in 15 races this year to extend his lead to 109 points.
– Hamilton was left fuming after Mercedes failed to change his tyres during the caution period. That left him vulnerable and allowed team-mate George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to pass him after the restart to take the other podium places. Hamilton, who briefly had slim hopes of a victory with about 20 laps to go, saw them evaporate in a situation remarkably similar to the way in which he lost his eighth world title in Abu Dhabi last year. He managed to hang on to fourth ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso’s Alpine and Lando Norris’ McLaren. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished fifth on the road but was demoted to eighth after a five-second penalty for an unsafe pit stop release. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/62788082

TECH

Should I skip the iPhone 14 and buy the iPad 2022 instead? – How to keep access to Apple services when you no longer use an iPhone or Mac computer:
(In these tight economic times, new Apple products just cost too much for most people. For any new Apple device, there is a non-Apple device with similar specs, available for far less, sometimes half as much! Repair bills for Apple devices are much higher than for any other brand. Apple security may seem good while it is working correctly, and it is, but when it goes wrong, and you are locked out of your device, which is not uncommon, a security nightmare often ensues as you beg Apple Support to unblock you. This article provides a comprimise solution to this dilemma. -Ed.)
– The annual iPhone launch is always the most exciting event in mobile tech, and this year Apple is expected to drop the iPhone 14, alongside the iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
– It won’t be a revolutionary update, and not an entirely new design, more like some small tweaks and a feature boost. That’s why I’m more excited about the iPad 2022, likely about a month behind the new iPhones. Between the iPhone and the iPad, it’s Apple’s next tablet that I’m planning on buying. One of the more significant improvements is that the next base iPad is expected to feature a USB-C port.
– Once it’s launched, I’ll happily buy the basic new Apple iPad. I do like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S tablets very much, but they are crazy expensive and don’t offer me the entrance to Apple’s ecosystem that I’m searching for.
– Why do I need an Apple device? I need a way back into the Apple ecosystem. I have no iPhone, no Macbook, and my kid commandeered my old iPad completely. The iPad isn’t friendly with multiple user accounts, and there’s no way I’m taking away his primary source of entertainment on our frequent and long car rides.
– I used Apple’s gear for many years, so now I need a way to access my stuff. I have years of photos saved up in iCloud. My music library started on iTunes, and I still have tracks there I can’t find on Spotify or elsewhere. I want to be able to play my games with all of my Apple Game Center progress saved. If I want to keep in touch with the life I stored on iCloud even though I no longer use an iPhone or MacBook for a variety of reasons. The iPad is the cheapest and best option for those looking to stay connected with Apple services.

SPAIN

Spain to slash tax on gas bills from 21 to 5% as energy prices continue to spiral: Spain’s PM, Pedro Sánchez, has announced that he will lower the IVA sales tax on gas bills from the current 21% to 5%, at least from October until the end of the year, in view of the evolution of gas prices in international markets, which set a new record in August.
– Sánchez made the announcement in an interview on Cadena Ser ahead of a winter in which it is feared that gas bills may experience a dangerous rise. Russia’s decision to cut the gas pipelines with Germany or France, among other countries, has hit the international gas market which, in turn, has led to electricity bills rocketing as the raw material is used to produce electricity in power plants. This IVA reduction on gas bills in Spain would join the sales tax cut, from 10 to 5%, on electricity bills since spring. It is the minimum tax allowed by the European Commission. The unemployment rate in Spain stands at 12.6%: the highest in the EU and twice the average for all countries: In July, Spain recorded a total of 2.96 million unemployed, according to figures published this Thursday by Eurostat, which is equivalent to an unemployment rate of 12.6%. What is striking about the figure, in this case, is found in the international comparison with the rest of the powers of the eurozone and the European Union (EU). Specifically, this unemployment rate of 12.6% registered in Spain in July is the highest of both the 27 countries of the EU, and the 19 of the eurozone, which registered rates of 6%, and 6.6% on average , respectively. In addition, only Greece registers similar volumes of unemployment for the whole of the employed population, with an unemployment rate of 11.4%. Of course, in the case of the Greeks there are 500,000 people who make up the lists of unemployed, that is, one sixth of Spain. Divers seal tank vents leaking oil from bulk carrier off Gibraltar: Divers sealed two tank vents that leaked fuel from a bulk carrier that was damaged and beached after a collision off the British enclave of Gibraltar on the southern tip of Spain, local authorities said on Thursday. The hull of the bulk carrier OS 35 broke after the collision with an LNG tanker and started leaking fuel oil on Wednesday, but the vessel has not broken into two parts. Photo: REUTERS/Jon Nazca. SCAMS

Police warn of a hoax about the fourth dose of the Covid vaccine, which aims to hack into mobile phones: {Translation}
– The National Police has warned through its official Twitter profile of a false notification that is circulating on Whatsapp about the administration of the fourth dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus and that seeks, in reality, the hacking of the mobile phone to obtain personal data. They warn that it is a fraud and ask that the message, which is suspicious because it appears with spelling mistakes and grammatical inconsistencies, should not be spread any further.
– The text reads: “Just so you take note. They are supposedly calling from the Ministry of Health for the fourth booster dose. They will give you all the details: e-mail, address, telephone number, etc. Then they ask you to give them a code that they send you by SMS (to hack your mobile phone). If you don’t give it to them, they hang up. This is how they hack. So that you can warn your family, friends, etc. They have just passed it on to the health platform”.
– This type of fraud, known as ‘vishing’, is an increasingly common technique, similar to ‘phishing’, which is practised, above all, on elderly people. Fraudsters usually claim to be part of a renowned organisation, institution or company by means of a phone call with the aim of gaining the confidence of the person receiving the call and then stealing data or money.
– The Oficina de Seguridad del Internauta (Internet Security Office) says that in the event of any suspicion of possible fraud, they recommend cutting off all communication. If you have been a victim of a scam, they advise you to follow these steps:
-Scan your device with an updated antivirus.
-Delete any files that you have downloaded from the email.
-Block the number that contacted you.
-Change the passwords of any accounts that may have been compromised.
-Contact your bank to cancel any unauthorised payments or cancel your card if necessary.
-Gather as much evidence as possible and report it to the State Security Forces and Corps. Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/sociedad/policia-alerta-bulo-cuarta-dosis-vacuna-covid-20220901133933-nt.html

The immortal jellyfish reveals its secrets for eternal life:
– The Turritopsis dohrnii is a small jellyfish that can be found from the Pacific Ocean to the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. It belongs to the anemone and coral family. Many species in this group have cellular regeneration abilities that humans envy, but the T. dohrnii surpasses them all. Under normal conditions, its life cycle is divided into four parts. The union of the male and female gametes produces a larva or planula. It then attaches to the seabed as a polyp, similar to an anemone. The polyps then release ephyra, or young jellyfish in the phase prior to sexual maturity. They become jellyfish, reproduce sexually and start over. But if they are stressed by an environmental threat, the jellyfish revert: after reproducing, they return to the previous phases, becoming polyps on the ocean floor again.
– As far as scientists know, jellyfish can repeat the process indefinitely. Thus they are said to be biologically immortal. They can be eaten by a predator or fall into the hands of a swimmer, but they do not die of old age. Photo: María Pascual. ENERGY CRISIS

Gazprom initiates another three-day gas outage on Nord Stream 1: Russian energy giant Gazprom halted the flow of natural gas to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Wednesday. Gazprom has repeatedly reduced the flow of gas through the crucial pipeline, which runs under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, citing technical issues, such as repairs. The company says the shutdown, which will last until Saturday, is necessary for maintenance reasons. But Western nations have claimed Russia is weaponising gas supplies amid the Ukraine war. According to Gazprom, Nord Stream 1’s only remaining turbine, located at the Portovaya compressor station in western Russia, needs servicing. Do You Post Videos on YouTube? Fake ‘YouTube’ DMCA Notices Exploit Suspension Fears to Install Malware:
– A scam currently doing the rounds warns of copyright strikes on genuine YouTube accounts, attempting to extort a payment for a false claim.
– While technically experienced YouTubers may not fall for this kind of scam, it’s not difficult to see how someone who really values their YouTube channel might act emotionally in the heat of the moment.
– That being said, the scam cannot survive when a user has a clear understanding of YouTube’s ‘strike’ system and the methods used by the platform to communicate problems. Becoming familiar with these processes isn’t difficult but if there’s any doubt, log into YouTube, read any messages and before clicking anything, ask someone.
Nothing is so urgent it can’t wait, despite what the scammers say.

– The incidence continues to fall, 153 cases compared to 162 last Friday, but in the last four days there have been 254 new deaths.
– The Hospital La Fe in Valencia announced last Monday that it no longer has any patients with covid in its intensive care units, a fact that has not occurred since the start of the pandemic, in March 2020. At Hospital La Paz Madrid, another reference health complex, there was only one patient admitted with covid. And this trend is beginning to spread to other hospitals throughout the country. MALAGA

Sacaba beach in Malaga closed due to the presence of a bacterium:
{Translation}
– The Malaga City Council has closed Sacaba beach, in the western part of the city of Malaga, to bathing this Tuesday, at the request of the Health Department of the Andalusian Regional Government after an alteration of the microbiological parameter due to the presence in the water of the bacterium “Escherichia coli” was detected.
– The council has received a communication from the Junta asking it to adopt the necessary preventive health measures until the results of the analysis indicate that the water is suitable for bathing.
– The council claims to be unaware of the causes of this alteration, which has led to the closure of the section between the breakwater of the Térmica and the mouth of the Guadalhorce river.
– The municipal water company, Emasa, has checked all the points in the supply and drainage network where there could have been a spillage and has not detected any malfunctioning.
– This same beach had to be closed to bathing in July due to a burst pipe during construction work. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1070762/cerrada-la-playa-de-sacaba-en-malaga-por-la-presencia-de-una-bacteria/

Your Smartphone Precisely Tracks Everywhere You Go 24/7, and That Data Is For Sale:
(This article is about a USA court case, but it exposes a worldwide data harvesting scandal I have warned readers about for many years. DoctorLaptop’s insightful comment follows the article. -Ed.)
– The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday said it filed a lawsuit against Kochava, a location data broker, for collecting and selling precise geolocation data gathered from consumers’ mobile devices.
– The location data is offered to its customers in the form of a feed that can be accessed through online data marketplaces for a $25,000 subscription. As recently as June 2022, it also made available a free sample dataset for a rolling seven-day period on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Marketplace with no restrictions placed on its usage.
– “This premium U.S. Precision Geo feed delivers raw latitude / longitude data with volumes around 94Billion+ geo transactions per month, 125 million monthly active users, and 35 million daily active users, on average observing more than 90 daily transactions per device,” Kochava noted. (Yes, you read that right. Your smartphone reports your location 90+ times a day to the data mining services!)
– It’s worth noting that each pair of timestamped latitude and longitude coordinates are associated with a device identifier – i.e., mobile advertising IDs (MAIDs) – a unique, anonymous alphanumeric identifier that iOS or Android assigns to each mobile device.
– Stating that the company’s sale of geolocation data puts users at significant risk, the consumer protection watchdog said the information enables purchasers to identify and track specific mobile device users, and worse, combined with other datasets such as property records to unmask their identity.
– “The company’s data allows purchasers to track people at sensitive locations that could reveal information about their personal health decisions, religious beliefs, and steps they are taking to protect themselves from abusers,” the FTC said. “The release of this data could expose them to stigma, discrimination, physical violence, emotional distress, and other harms.”
– The lawsuit comes as the FTC in July cautioned businesses against the illegal use and sharing of highly sensitive data and false claims about data anonymization.
(WhatsApp being the worst offender, misrepresenting their so called “end to end encryption” as providing secure messaging, when it is in fact not secure. Their encryption is very limited, only protecting you from your service provider snooping, or from an attack you are not likely to be the victim of, called a “man-in-the-middle attack”.
Malware in a phone can capture anything on WhatsApp, since it will gather the data as it is entered, before it is encrypted, or malware will capture it from the receiver, when the message is decrypted for the recipient to read. A total farce to call that secure!!! And to make things worse, WhatsApp backs-up all your conversations, unencrypted, to the regularly-hacked “cloud” for data storage. So inevitably it will be subject to data mining. -DoctorLaptop.) Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/08/ftc-sues-data-broker-over-selling.html

Today is La Tomatina, the famous tomato street fight:
– In a village called Buñol, near Valencia, there is a crazy festival that takes place every year on the last Wednesday of August. It is called la Tomatina and it is the biggest tomato fight in the world! Thousands of people flock to the village to join the tomato-throwing event. The amount of participants has now been limited to 22,000 for safety.
– In the morning, lorries – los camiones – arrive, loaded with around 160 tons of tomatoes that have been specially grown for the festival. The special tomatoes are extra ripe so that they are soft. They do not have a good taste.
– The day begins at around 10 a.m. with the ‘greased pole.’ In Spanish it is called el palo jabón. People try to climb up the slippery pole where there is a leg of ham attached to the top. When a lucky person eventually manages to fetch the ham – el jamón – the tomato fight can begin!
– Before the battle begins, shops and windows are boarded up so that they are protected. The tomato fight – la batalla – usually starts at around 11 a.m. and it lasts for one hour. A signal is fired, meaning that the tomato-throwing can begin.
– One hour later, another signal means that the tomato-throwing must stop. Everybody is in a terrible state because they are covered in tomato juice, seeds and bits! Afterwards, the messy streets are hosed down with water.
– This traditional event dates back to 1945 when some cheeky boys decided to throw tomatoes at a procession taking place on the last Wednesday of August. The boys decided to do the same thing during the procession the following year. Gradually, it became a tradition to throw tomatoes during the procession and it is now one of the most popular festivals in Spain! Full article: https://www.euroclub-schools.org/la-tomatina

Half a million homeless after deadly floods leave a third of Pakistan underwater: Nearly half a million people crowded into camps after losing their homes in widespread flooding and the climate minister warned Monday that Pakistan is on the “front line” of the world’s climate crisis, after unprecedented monsoon rains that began in mid-June wracked the country, killing more than 1,130 people.
– A third of Pakistan was underwater as a result of flooding caused by record monsoon rains, Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman said Monday, creating a crisis of “unimaginable proportions”. “It’s all one big ocean, there’s no dry land to pump the water out,” she said.
– The rains stopped more than two days ago, and floods in some areas were receding. But Pakistanis in many parts of the country were still wading through waters that filled their homes or covered their town’s streets as they struggled with how to deal with the damage to homes and businesses.

Phone Scam: Marjorie from Almunecar has shared that last week she received a fake message on a smartphone, supposedly from the Post Office. They told her it was spam, not legit.

SPAIN

Spain’s Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, Declares Feminist Takeover- “…the construction of a feminist society, and men also play a role…new masculinities and the role of men in feminism.”:
{Translation, summary} 29/08/2022 11:03
– The Minister for Equality spoke in an interview on Radiocable, referring to the ‘only yes is yes’ law passed last week in Congress. Montero reiterated that this law “is a victory after many years of struggle by the feminist movement”. “It is excellent news that Spain is at the forefront in the recognition of women’s rights,” Montero said.
– For Montero, the law “is a victory”, but she acknowledged that “much remains to be done” and mentioned the need to continue with the work of the State Pact against Gender Violence as part of her agenda for the coming months.
– The Minister for Equality also focused on “the need for affective-sexual education, awareness-raising and social debate” and said, with regard to criticism of her Ministry, that “all societies are sexist”.
– For this reason, she assured that the Ministry “is going to take very seriously” the initiation of a “reflection on how men also play a role in the construction of a feminist society”. And, to this end, she announced the launch of campaigns from September onwards “that have to do with new masculinities and the role of men in feminism”.

AXARQUIA

Asian algae are beginning to leave their mark on the Axarquia coastline: {Translation}
– The first large nestings of the invasive species are appearing on the beaches of Nerja and experts predict that the plague will get worse.
– Detected for the first time in 2015 in Ceuta, where it is believed that it came from the hold of the huge cargo ships from Japan, the ‘Rugulopteryx okamurae’ or Asian algae invasion continues without control by the Spanish Mediterranean. Since the end of 2018 it has confirmed its presence at the natural cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, who share the provinces of Malaga and Granada, one of the areas of greatest biodiversity of the Spanish coast.
– In this year of 2022, more than 450 fishing boats in Andalusia have requested aid for the damage caused by the invasive algae. In addition to suffering economic losses from reduced catches, fishermen have also been spending months and money fixing their nets. – The councillor for Safety and Transport, Francisco Arce, has recommended to residents and visitors that “as far as possible, they should not use their vehicles during these hours and if they need to get to an appointment, they should anticipate the traffic inconveniences that may arise”.

Mysterious “Spanish Stonehenge” Built Around 5000 B.C. No Longer Submerged Due to Drought: The mysterious “Spanish Stonehenge” is no longer underwater. The Dolmen of Guadalperal is completely visible due to the lower water level in the Valdecañas reservoir (Cáceres). A persistent drought has caused the historic archaeological site, which had been hidden from view for decades, to surface. The treasure comprises hundreds of vertically stacked megalithic stones and is thought to have been created around 5,000 BC. Full article:

TRAVEL NEWS

The Iberia strike affects a Malaga-Madrid connection this Monday:
{Translation} 27 Aug, 2022 13:00h
– This Sunday begins a series of 10 days of strike among Iberia Express cabin crew (TCP) called by USO, in a protest that demands better wages in the negotiation of the agreement, from which CC.OO., the other central with representation in the company, has dissociated itself.
– After an unsuccessful attempt to reach a compromise this Friday at the negotiating table of the 2nd Iberia Express Flight Attendants Agreement, USO is maintaining the strike until 6 September for the 532 crew members of the airline. The Ministry of Transport set the minimum services, which are between 32% and 85% of the services operated to or from Madrid by Iberia Express, the low-cost subsidiary of Iberia.
– The company has announced the cancellation of 24 flights, all of them not included in the minimum services, with origin or destination in Madrid-Barajas for tomorrow and Monday and Tuesday, so that only those that Transport has established as minimum services will operate.
– The trade union calling the strike puts the number of Madrid-Barajas-based flights that will be suspended on the 10 days for which the strike has been called at 92, but airline sources specify that the suspensions from the 31st onwards have not yet been decided. Iberia Express says that on the 28th and 29th it will cancel one return flight per day with the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Seville and Santiago; on the 29th one with Malaga (return), and on the 30th another return flight in each case with the Balearic Islands, Seville and Santiago.
– The 3,000 customers that the airline calculates will be affected by these cancellations have been notified of the changes. Some 66% have been rebooked on other flights and 34% are waiting to choose the alternative that suits them best (alternative transport, reimbursement, change of date or vouchers). Tennis News- Serena, Venus Williams get US Open doubles wild-card entry: The American siblings, who have won two of their 14 women’s doubles Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows, were given a wild-card entry by the U.S. Tennis Association on Saturday, making it their first tournament as a team in more than four years.
– Serena announced this month that she is preparing to end her playing career and, while she did not explicitly say the U.S. Open would be her final event, she has indicated it will be.
– Serena, who turns 41 next month, and Venus, who turned 42 in June, won women’s doubles championships at the U.S. Open in 1999, the year Serena won her first major singles trophy at age 17 in New York, and 2009. Their other Grand Slam triumphs in doubles: six at Wimbledon, four at the Australian Open and two at the French Open. The most recent came at the All England Club in 2016. Photo: AP /Darron Cummings.
