The fifth wave recedes in Vélez, Torrox and Algarrobo, while it stabilises in Rincón and Nerja: {Translation} Updated: 8 AUG, 2021
-Árchez, Arenas, Canillas de Aceituno, Comares, Cútar, Salares and Sedella have not registered any cases of coronavirus in the last 14 days.
-The peak of infections of the fifth wave of COVID-19 in Axarquia has already peaked in some municipalities. This is also confirmed by the number of positives detected this week (543), which is the lowest since mid-July. Even so, the incidence remains variable in the different localities of the region and the decrease is not homogeneous, nor is it occurring at the same speed.
-Among the coastal municipalities of Axarquia, Velez-Malaga, Torrox and Algarrobo show a clear downward trend in the incidence rate. In the case of the Axarquia capital, its peak occurred on 26 July (636.2), but it has been this week when the decrease has become more evident (on Monday it had a rate of 601 cases, 558.5 on Tuesday, 574.3 on Wednesday, 530.6 on Thursday and 500.2 on Friday). In Torrox the peak occurred on 2 August (518.3) and since that date the incidence of coronavirus has fallen steadily (on Tuesday it had a rate of 490.4 cases, 451.4 on Wednesday, 384.6 on Thursday and 345.5 on Friday). Identical is the situation in Algarrobo, which peaked on 2 August (732.2) and has since improved its epidemiological indicators (on Tuesday it had a rate of 686.4 cases, 671.1 on Wednesday, 610.1 on Thursday and 549.1 on Friday).
-Rincón de la Victoria reached the highest rate of the fifth wave on 27 July (691). The evolution of infections this week seemed to indicate that the virus was receding in the locality (on Monday it had a rate of 635.7 cases, 656.2 on Tuesday, 627.5 on Wednesday and 576.2 on Thursday), but this Friday its incidence rose 26.7 points and stood at 602.9 positives per 100,000 inhabitants.
-In Nerja the evolution of the coronavirus incidence rate has stabilised. However, it remains the coastal municipality with the highest rate in the region. According to the latest Health data, this Friday it had an incidence of 1,002.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, similar to Thursday (1,002.6), higher than Wednesday (927) and Tuesday (988.5), and the same as last Monday (1,002.6).
*Another 13 municipalities of Axarquia at extreme risk*
-In addition to the five coastal municipalities already mentioned, 13 other towns in the region are at extreme risk, with incidence rates above 250 cases. In the case of Alcaucín, it is the municipality with the highest incidence of the virus in La Axarquía with 1,711.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Also in this situation are Colmenar (938.7), Iznate (882), Alfarnatejo (824.2), Frigiliana (783.8), Alfarnate (751.2), Sayalonga (574), Totalán (407.1), Riogordo (330.5), Cómpeta (302.5), La Viñuela (292), Canillas de Albaida (263.5) and Periana (259).
-The incidence in the Axarquia Health District (which includes Casabermeja) is 537.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while in the Malaga Health District (which includes Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Rincón de la Victoria and Totalán, as well as Malaga city and Almogía) it is 894.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. For its part, the incidence in the province of Malaga stands at 745.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
-The total number of cases with active infection (PDIA) in the last 14 days in the Axarquia region is distributed as follows:
412 in Vélez-Málaga; 294 in Rincón de la Victoria; 212 in Nerja; 62 in Torrox; 39 in Alcaucín; 36 in Algarrobo; 32 in Colmenar; 24 in Frigiliana; 12 in Cómpeta; 9 in Riogordo and Sayalonga; 8 in Alfarnate, Iznate and Periana; 7 in Benamocarra; 6 in La Viñuela; 3 in Alfarnatejo and Totalán; 2 in Benamargosa and Canillas de Albaida; and 1 in Almáchar, El Borge, Macharaviaya and Moclinejo. The wholesale price of electricity will reach an all-time high this Monday, at 106.74 euros per MWh: {Translation} Updated 8 AUG 2021, 14:33
-The average price of electricity on the wholesale market, which determines part of the electricity bill, will reach an all-time high of 106.74 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) tomorrow, Monday, surpassing the current record of 106.57 euros per MWh, set on 21 July.
-According to data from the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE), the price set this Sunday for Monday 9 August – each day the price for the following day is negotiated – almost triples that of the second Monday in August 2020 (38.09 euros per MWh).
-By time slots, the maximum price for tomorrow will be between 22.00 and 23.00 hours, with 114.07 euros per MWh, and the minimum, between 17.00 and 18.00 hours, with 97.95 euros. The week thus begins with a new all-time high, after the first few days of August in which the price has remained at around 100 euros per MWh – only one working day, Friday 6 August, and weekends have fallen below this threshold – and July was the most expensive month in history, with an average of 92.4 euros per MWh.
-The price of electricity on the wholesale market, where electricity producers match their offers for the following day and prices are set for each hour of that day, has a weight of around 24% in the electricity bill of consumers on the regulated tariff or Voluntary Price for Small Consumers (PVPC), just over ten million.
-The 17 million or so consumers on the free market, who pay the prices offered per kilowatt hour by the companies with which they contract their supply, are not affected by upward fluctuations, but neither do they benefit from downward fluctuations, as happened last year.
-Despite the measures approved by the government to curb this rise in electricity prices – a reduction in VAT from 21% to 10% on electricity bills and the temporary suspension in the third quarter of the tax on electricity generation (7%) – the price of electricity on the wholesale market remains at unusually high levels for this time of year.
-Behind the price increases are the high gas prices on international markets and CO2 emission rights, which have been reaching record highs month after month in 2021. Source, Spanish: https://www.eldiario.es/economia/precio-mayorista-electricidad-alcanzara-manana-maximo-historico_1_8205201.html

Andalusia maintains Covid infections but the incidence has fallen in the last three days: {Translation} Updated: 06/08/2021, 17:26
-Andalusia recorded a total of 4,651 cases of coronavirus this Friday, similar to the 4,496 the day before and lower than the 5,099 seven days ago, according to data released by the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA), which has counted 16 deaths, up from 15 on Thursday and eight last Friday.
-On the other hand, the cumulative incidence rate of the community has fallen for the third time after chaining 33 days of consecutive increases and stands at 581.7 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, 3.2 points less in 24 hours, but 13.3 points more in a week.
-The 4,651 positives of this Friday are registered after the 4,496 of Thursday, the 3,655 of Wednesday, the 4,459 of Tuesday, the 4,467 of Monday and Sunday, the 5,138 of Saturday and the 5,099 of last Friday.
-By provinces, Seville is again the one with more cases, with 1,154, followed by Malaga with 1,111, Cadiz with 662, Granada with 394, Jaen with 389, Cordoba with 328, Almeria with 323 and Huelva with 290.
-As for the 16 deaths, Malaga and Seville each recorded five deaths, followed by Cordoba, Granada and Cadiz, where two people died in each province.
-The most worrying news refers to hospitalisations. This Friday, 143 people have been admitted to Andalusian hospitals, 13 of whom are in the ICU. Thus, in total there are 1,336 confirmed patients with Covid admitted, of whom 252 are in ICU.

EMA links Janssen vaccine to immune thrombocytopenia, dizziness and tinnitus: {Translation}
-The European Medicines Agency (EMA), through its Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC), has updated this Friday the information available on the safety of covid-19 vaccines, especially that of Janssen. It considers that there is a causal relationship between its administration and reported cases of immune thrombocytopenia, dizziness and tinnitus.
-The EMA recommends that these risks be included in the package leaflet and package insert of the vaccine to serve as a warning to healthcare professionals and patients, and stresses that the benefit-risk balance of the vaccine remains positive.
-The PRAC has also recommended updating the risk management plan for this vaccine to reclassify thrombocytopenia, which is currently considered “a potential major risk”, to “an identified major risk”. In immune thrombocytopenia, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelets, which increases bleeding and bruising.
-To reach the conclusion that this disorder is related to the vaccine, the EMA reports that all available information has been evaluated, including scientific studies published in journals, and cases reported in the European database on suspected adverse events EudraVigilance, the US Vaccine Safety System (Vaers) and the laboratory database.
*Dizziness and tinnitus*
-In the case of dizziness, the committee says that 1,183 cases identified in spontaneous reports of suspected adverse reactions to vaccination, which were related to anxiety, have been analysed.
-The EMA also investigated six cases of tinnitus that were detected during clinical trials, and 108 more identified by Janssen during follow-up of adverse event reports.
*Vaxzevria’, the UK option*
-Separately, the EMA committee has announced that it has requested further information from AstraZeneca and is continuing to review the link between administration of its Vaxzevria vaccine and Guillain-Barré syndrome. The PRAC has already recommended including a warning in the information accompanying the vaccine about this possible association.
-Guillain-Barré is a rare immune system disorder that causes inflammation of the nerves and can lead to pain, numbness, muscle weakness and difficulty walking. The EMA advises those vaccinated with AstraZeneca to seek immediate medical attention if they develop weakness and paralysis in the limbs that may progress to the chest and face.
-Another recent risk associated with covid-19 vaccines is menstrual cycle disorders. The agency’s experts consider that a cause-effect relationship cannot be established at this stage, but note that they have asked the laboratories of the four EU-licensed vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen) to provide more information on this issue. Apple Wants You To “Re-Imagine” Security & Encryption – Backdoors and scanners in your device will monitor your activity to censor photos and messages deemed inappropriate – “to protect the children”?!?: {Statement from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, with preface by Editor}
The problem is that these same tools used to root out illegal photos and “bad words” can be abused to monitor and censor everything on the device. Apple claims to have high security standards, and to some degree it does. However, it is in a constant battle to stay ahead of hackers. Adding backdoors and allowing encryption to be bypassed will only make the hackers and snoops work easier! And, of course, once this door is opened, big tech and governments will become accustomed to having constant access to everyone’s data, for whatever they deem to be reasonable causes. I wouldn’t ever expect them to return your privacy.
-To say that we are disappointed by Apple’s plans is an understatement. Apple has historically been a champion of end-to-end encryption, for all of the same reasons that EFF has articulated time and time again. Apple’s new compromise on end-to-end encryption may appease government agencies in the U.S. and abroad, but it is a shocking about-face for users who have relied on the company’s leadership in privacy and security.
-We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again now: it’s impossible to build a client-side scanning system that can only be used for sexually explicit images. As a consequence, even a well-intentioned effort to build such a system will break key promises of the messenger’s encryption itself and open the door to broader abuses.
-All it would take to widen the narrow backdoor that Apple is building is an expansion of the machine learning parameters to look for additional types of content, or a tweak of the configuration flags to scan, not just children’s, but anyone’s accounts. That’s not a slippery slope; that’s a fully built system just waiting for external pressure to make the slightest change.
-People have the right to communicate privately without backdoors or censorship, including when those people are minors. Apple should make the right decision: keep these backdoors off of users’ devices.

Solar System 2.0- A Water World, A Mini-Venus And A Potentially Habitable Planet: Astronomers have found three intriguing planets around a star just 35 light-years distant that resemble those found in our own Solar System.
They include an ocean world, a planet with half the mass of Venus and a possible planet in the star’s habitable zone.
“The planet in the habitable zone may have an atmosphere that could protect and support life,” says María Rosa Zapatero Osorio, an astronomer at the Centre for Astrobiology in Madrid, Spain, and one of the authors of the study published today in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Amazon Kindle Alert- If you have not updated the device since before April, do so now:
Amazon earlier this April addressed a critical vulnerability in its Kindle e-book reader platform that could have been potentially exploited to take full control over a user’s device, resulting in the theft of sensitive information by just deploying a malicious e-book.
“By sending Kindle users a single malicious e-book, a threat actor could have stolen any information stored on the device, from Amazon account credentials to billing information,” Yaniv Balmas, head of cyber research at Check Point, said in an emailed statement.
Upon responsibly disclosing the issue to Amazon in February 2021, the retail and entertainment giant published a fix as part of its 5.13.5 version of Kindle firmware in April 2021. Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/08/new-amazon-kindle-bug-couldve-let.html

Frequent consumption of peanuts by cancer patients may increase risk of cancer spread, study finds: A study by University of Liverpool researchers has identified new factors accompanying previous findings that frequent consumption of peanuts by cancer patients could increase risk of cancer spread.
The study, published in Carcinogenesis, shows that Peanut agglutinin (PNA) — a carbohydrate-binding protein that rapidly enters into the blood circulation after peanuts are eaten — interacts with blood vascular wall (endothelial) cells to produce molecules called cytokines.
The cytokines in question, IL-6 and MCP-1 are well-known promoters of cancer metastasis.
The increased cytokine production causes other endothelial cells to express more cell surface adhesion molecules, making them more attractive to the circulating tumour cells and thus potentially promoting metastasis. Full article: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/08/210804123555.htm

Ticks thrive mainly in fields, in areas with vegetation and animals, but can also be found in parks, gardens, swimming pools and even on the beach.

OTHER NEWS

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, 80, pulls out of band’s US tour after undergoing emergency surgery in London: Watts, 80, underwent a ‘successful procedure’ in London after a routine check-up highlighted a problem, according to reports.
But on the advice of doctors, Watts announced he would sit out the band’s shows for ‘rest and recuperation’ – the first time he has missed a tour since 1963.
Clearly still in good spirits, he joked: ‘For once, my timing has been a little off.’
Steve Jordan, a session drummer and long-time friend of the band, said it was ‘an honour and privilege’ to stand in for Watts during the 13-date No Filter tour of the US. Machu Picchu is even older than we thought: Samples of bone and teeth from individuals buried in caves at four cemeteries around Machu Picchu form the basis for a new programme of AMS radiocarbon-dating. The results show that the site was occupied from c. AD 1420–1532, with activity beginning two decades earlier than suggested by the textual sources from Spanish writers that associate the site with Emperor Pachacuti’s rise to power in AD 1438. SPAIN

New noise radars will be installed on Spain’s roads soon:
There are already fines given out in Spain for excess noise, known as ‘noise pollution’, but this Autumn you can expect a whole new headache, as noise radars start to be installed on the roads and streets of Spain, that measure the decibels emitted by your vehicle as it drives along, and it is predicted that by 2022, these radars could be in place, and ready to fine drivers whose vehicles exceed the permitted level of noise. Facua denounces the large electricity companies for irregularities in the information of the new bills: Facua-Consumidores en Acción has denounced the leading marketers of the Endesa, Iberdrola and Naturgy groups before the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) for “irregularities” in the information they provide in their new invoices.
In a statement, the association considers that the companies violate the requirements established in the resolution of April 28 of the General Directorate of Energy Policy and Mines, by not showing consumption, identifying each hourly period with colors as a traffic light as established by the normative, “thus fomenting the confusion of the users”. ANDALUCIA

Strange Bedfellows?- Right wing conservative VOX party pledges to block socialist sponsored attempt at Covid passport requirements for nightlife: {Translation}
-Francisco Ocaña, MP and secretary general of the VOX Parliamentary Group in Andalusia, has criticised the imposition of the Covid passport by the Government of the Junta de Andalucía to gain access to the inside of nightlife venues in Andalusia. For Francisco Ocaña, this imposition “is another sign that Juanma Moreno is increasingly closer to the policies of Pedro Sánchez’s PSOE”. “This decision is a direct attack on the rights of Andalusians and only serves to grant arbitrary powers to the administrations”.
-“Why does Juanma Moreno insist on imitating Pedro Sánchez?”, asked the MP from Granada. “In VOX we are not going to allow more violations, discrimination or violations of the fundamental rights and freedoms of Andalusians”.
-Francisco Ocaña also came out in defence of the hotel and nightlife sector. “We are not going to allow Juanma Moreno to sink them. These are two sectors that in recent months have already suffered the disastrous restrictions imposed by the Junta de Andalucía”.
-The VOX deputy has stated categorically that “Juanma Moreno is wrong”. “The Covid passport is a savagery and from VOX we reject it outright. We are the only party that has been demanding the need not to discriminate against unvaccinated citizens”.
-“We say it loud and clear; if the Government of the Junta de Andalucía does not rectify the situation, VOX will go to court to put an end to this new violation of the rights of Andalusians”, concluded Ocaña. MALAGA

The Nerja Flea Market (Rastro de Nerja) and the We Love Market (Mercado de Artesania) are temporarily suspended: {Translation, summary}
-Nerja’s councillor for commerce, Javier López, says that “once the health situation changes and circumstances permit, these markets will resume their activity”.
-López reports that the Nerja Flea Market, managed by the local Lions Club, and the craft market We Love Nerja Market, which is held periodically in Plaza de España, have temporarily suspended their activities as a preventive measure in the face of the spread of the coronavirus.-
The councillor also clarified that “once the health situation changes and the circumstances allow it, these markets will resume their activity”. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/se-suspenden-temporalmente-el-rastro-de-nerja-y-el-mercado-de-artesania-we-love-market/

Marbella and Estepona out of the curfew in the early hours of Saturday: {Translation, summary}
The curfew currently in force in Marbella and Estepona will end in the early hours of Saturday morning, a week after the measure was ratified by the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA). The Regional Ministry of Health has decided this Wednesday not to renew the time restriction in these two municipalities after both have lowered their Covid incidence rate to below 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the threshold established by the Junta for the implementation of this measure. They are, according to the latest figures, at 900 and 955 cases, respectively. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Marbella-Estepona-salen-toque-queda-sabado_0_1598541530.html

Moped Inspection- Returning to Nerja, the mobile inspection unit of ITV for mopeds on 11 and 12 August: {Translation}
-The Nerja Councillor for Safety and Transport, Francisco Arce, informs that the mobile ITV unit for mopeds will be in Nerja on 11th August, at the market square at the end of Calle Cisne, from 7.15am to 1.45pm, and the following day, 12th August, from 7.15am to 11.45am. The appointment must be attended wearing a mask without a valve and respecting the health measures against the coronavirus at all times.
-Arce reminds us that “all those interested in having their mopeds serviced must make an appointment, which can be requested via the website http://www.itvcita.com or by telephone on 959 999 999”. He also explained that payment must be made by bank card or letter of payment, and that they must be in possession of a valid driving licence, technical inspection card and proof of insurance.
-Mopeds are obliged to undergo their first MOT three years after the date of initial registration, and subsequent MOTs every two years. In this sense, to improve road safety and protect the environment, the Andalusian Regional Government’s Department of Finance and European Funding has mobile ITVs in service, which provide greater convenience to residents who have these vehicles and avoid having to travel to other places for inspections. This regulation will remain in place throughout August and the government and autonomous regions will meet again at the end of the month to assess its effectiveness and the health situation. DoctorLaptop’s Tips #92- How to check if your Windows Operating System is Healthy:
There are several situations where you may want check if your Windows system is intact and healthy. These are indicators of system corruption:
-Your antivirus found and removed malware.
-You tried to install, or uninstall, an app, program or update and there was an error in the process.
-Your laptop battery died while installing, uninstalling or updating software.
-Your computer unexpectedly shut itself down.
-The computer is slow to respond to mouse or keyboard inputs.
-You get cryptic popup error messages, or BSODs (Blue Screen of Death).
-It takes longer to startup than it used to.
-Other unexplained odd behavior.
Here is how to run the Windows System Integrity Scan. This will scan your Windows system to make sure all the operating system files are intact. If it finds errors it will automatically attempt to correct them. When it finishes it will show a summary report of what it found, and if it made any repairs. This works on all current versions of Windows.
-Open a command line window with Administrator privileges (type CMD in the searchbox, it will appear at the top of a list, right click it and choose to run as administrator). A new command line window will open.
-Enter this command “sfc/scannow” without quote marks. Click ENTER. If it asks permission to proceed, accept that.
-The scan can take 10mins on a healthy system, to an hour or more if it has to make repairs. When it is finished you will see one of three messages. If it says “No Problems Found”, or, “Problems Fixed” (see pic) then it is done and you can close the command box and restart. If it shows a different message, “Errors were found that could not be repaired”, repeat the process. If you continue to get this message, your system needs more advanced repairs or possibly a new installation of Windows. Immediately backup your important data onto an external memory device if you have not done so recently, while the system is still working. Then call DoctorLaptop to schedule an exam of the patient, 675 993 069, after 11am.

WhatsApp “View Once” disappearing photo/videos function lands on Samsung phones: View Once photos and videos have now been rolled out for all WhatsApp users. They can use it to send photos and videos that will automatically disappear from the chat after they have been opened.
– It’s a great privacy feature to secure sensitive information like a Wi-Fi password, for example, or photos or videos that you want the recipient to see only once. To use this feature, just tap on the “1” button on the left of the send button when sending a photo or video in a chat.
– All media sent through the WhatsApp View Once feature is secured with end-to-end encryption. This means that WhatsApp can’t see what’s being shared.
– The recipient will see it’s a disappearing photo when they receive it and it will be deleted automatically after they have seen it. There’s obviously nothing stopping them from taking a screenshot or recording their phone with another device, but that’s a whole other discussion.

Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.
To see more images of Vetiver go to this link.

Coronavirus deaths in Spain soar to 130 in a day: The number of coronavirus infections is dropping but, simultaneously, the number of deaths is rocketing.
-The strong growth in infections during the beginning of July is starting to be reflected three weeks later in the morgues with 130 deaths in just 24 hours, a figure that has not been seen since 11 May when Spain was still suffering the effects of the fourth wave.
-However, in just one day Spain’s cumulative incidence rate fell almost 20 points, from 673.52 to 653.81 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a drop that has not been seen for weeks. Full article: http://www.surinenglish.com/national/202108/03/coronavirus-deaths-spain-soar-20210803184642.html

-The cumulative incidence rate has risen for 33 consecutive days and stands at 597.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, some 13.3 points more in 24 hours and 61.5 points more in a week.
-By provinces, Malaga is once again the one with the most cases, with 1,270, followed by Seville with 796, Cadiz with 764, Almeria with 543, Cordoba with 439, Granada with 228, Huelva with 223 and Jaén with 196.

ANDALUCIA

The Covid passport in discotheques is postponed until the TSJA gives the go-ahead to the measure in Andalusia: {Translation} Updated: 03/08/2021 19:57h
-The Covid passport for nightlife will not come into force this Thursday. This has been announced by the Minister of the Presidency and spokesman of the Andalusian Government, Elías Bendodo, who has pointed out that he will first ask the courts to rule on this measure, which in places like the Canary Islands has already been overturned by a ruling.
-Bendodo, who has hoped that the TSJA will rule on this matter “as soon as possible”, has indicated that this measure is taken for “greater legal certainty” when applying the measure.
-Nightlife entrepreneurs have asked the Junta that if in the bars and nightclubs Covid passport are imposed to access the interior of the establishments, the capacity restrictions that exist until now will be lifted.
-In the end, this postponement has been granted by means of a referral to the TSJA. In this way, the demands of the employers’ association of the nightlife sector, which had considered the measure to ask for the Covid passport as “early and without consensus”, have been partially deactivated. -Olula del Río in Almeria province; Conil de la Frontera, Paterna de Rivera and Olvera (Cadiz province), Mengíbar (Jaén province), Malaga city and Campillos (Malaga province), Marchena, and El Cuervo (Seville province) are the Andalusian municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants that this Tuesday (3 August) exceed the rate of 1,000 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days.
-The municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants that currently have limited night mobility are Marbella (Malaga), Estepona (Malaga) and Montoro (Cordoba). However, all three have dropped below the threshold that marks these restrictions. Marbella stands at 934.8 this Tuesday, Estepona is at 982.5, and Montoro has an incidence rate of 828.6. Nerja Saved From Lockdown: {Translation, summary}
-Nerja has left the red zone of high incidence of Covid-19, a day before the provincial public health alert committees meet to review the current restrictions for contagions. The risk of the Junta de Andalucía imposing a curfew from two in the morning to seven in the morning has therefore receded. On the other hand, Conil de la Frontera has passed the threshold of 1,000 cases. OTHER NEWS

Another WhatsApp Scam Alert: The scam that seeks to steal your WhatsApp account with an SMS: The cybersecurity company ESET has warned of a new attack detected in the last hours that seeks to rob users of their account on the messaging platform WhatsApp with the sending of a fraudulent SMS.
-The cybercriminals behind the threat pose as WhatsApp technical support and contact the user through an SMS message to inform you that your phone number, the one linked to this service, you have been registered in a new account.
-Next, and to verify that the person they are addressing is the owner of the account, the cybercriminals they ask you to resend a six-digit security code that you will receive via SMS.
-If the victim sends the six-digit code to verify their identity, they will have completely lost control over their WhatsApp account and the cybercriminals will be able to log in with their phone number. That is, they can steal your account and impersonate the victim.
-ESET urge the users of this application to be vigilant for the possible reception of this type of SMS. If you see it in your inbox, they advise you to delete it immediately “in order to avoid a security breach,” as they point out in a statement.
-They also remind you that it is impossible for the potential victim’s number to be used to register a new account, since WhatsApp only allows one account per registered phone number. Source: https://spainsnews.com/the-scam-that-seeks-to-steal-your-whatsapp-account-with-an-sms/

Recommendations & Requests

Information Wanted – Pre-departure Covid tests: I read last week someone requesting information on a pharmacy in Torre del Mar offering rapid antigen tests for under 20 euros. Is there any update on this information? I know that there is a clinic in Nerja (opposite Mercadona) offering this for 35 euro and at the airport for 24 euro but they are fully booked. Thank you, Dawn (Nerja)

-Since last Friday the region has reported 202 new infections with 134 people recovered and Nerja exceeds the incidence rate of 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and could be closed perimetrically this week if it stays over 1000 for the next few days.
-The Axarquia starts the month of August with a new death in Velez-Malaga by coronavirus, 202 new infections since Friday and 134 people recovered.
-In addition, the Axarquia health district has increased its incidence rate by five points in the last 14 days and stands at 628.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
-By municipalities, up to four localities exceed the rate of 1,000 cases, Alcaucín with 1,755.2, Sayalonga with 1,148.0, Colmenar with 1,114.7 and Nerja with 1,002.6. The latter town could be closed perimetrically this week if it continues at this rate of incidence of contagion. Above 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants are Alfarnatejo, Algarrobo, Frigiliana, Iznate, Rincón de la Victoria, Riogordo, Sedella, Torrox and Vélez-Málaga.
-As for the new cases, these have been reported in Vélez-Málaga (66). Rincón de la Victoria (61). Nerja (34). Torrox (14). Algarrobo (7). Alcaucín (4). Colmenar (3). Frigiliana (3). Iznate (2). Periana (2). Alfarnate (1). Benamocarra (1). Competa (1). Riogordo (1). Sayalonga (1) and Totalán (1).

SPAIN

Spain retires the AstraZeneca vaccine for good, and sends the remaining doses to Latin America:
-Until 11 July, the final date of the study, 8,482,164 doses of Vaxzevria were administered in Spain, to 5,062,425 people. According to age groups, 83 per cent of recipients were between 18 and 65 years old and 17 per cent were over 65.
-During this period, 10,058 notifications of adverse events after a jab were registered in the Fedra database and the majority corresponded to women (74 per cent) and people between 18 and 65 years of age (96 per cent). Of all the notifications registered, some 2,252 were considered serious.
-Ministry of Health studies concluded that with the Oxford vaccine there is more than twice the possibility of serious reactions than with any other of the three authorised formulas in Spain.
-Fedra reveals that the possibility of suffering a serious problem after a jab with AstraZeneca is one in 3,766, a ratio that rises to one in 7,136 with Moderna; to one in 9,953 with Pfizer; to one in 10,441 with Janssen.
-Without a doubt, the biggest fear of AstraZeneca was the ‘very rare’ cases of thrombosis (formation of blood clots in the blood vessels) with thrombocytopenia (low levels of platelets), known as Thrombocytopenia Thrombosis Syndrome (TTS).
-Spain’s Ministry of Health announced the signing of a three-way agreement between the Government, AstraZeneca and Covax (the programme for donating vaccines to third countries). The deal means that the Anglo-Swedish laboratory will begin to send, directly to Latin America, the more than 20 million doses that Spain, despite having paid for them, is not willing to use. This is despite the fact that Spain has not even reached 60 per cent of its population immunised yet. MALAGA

The fairgrounds of El Morche will become an amusement park from 6 to 15 August: {Translation}
-“To be able to enjoy the attractions, it will be necessary to wear a mask at all times, comply with the social distancing, and use hydroalcoholic gel at the entrance,” said the councillor for Fiestas, Salvador Escudero.
-El Morche will experience a different kind of fair this year, where there will be no shortage of lights or fun. From 6 to 15 August, the football pitch, where the fairground has always been located, will be transformed this year into an amusement park, which will delight young and old alike.
-The initiative comes from the fairground entrepreneurs, who approached the councillor for Fiestas in Torrox, Salvador Escudero, to propose the amusement park format implemented in other towns and cities.
-Escudero has also informed that they will continue with the events programmed for ‘Vive el verano’ and will add “some more performances”. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/el-recinto-ferial-de-el-morche-se-convertira-en-un-parque-de-atracciones-del-6-al-15-de-agosto/

EUROPE

The European ID card can now be obtained when renewing the identity card: {Translation}
– Spanish citizens renewing their national identity card from Monday will obtain the new European ID card, with an electronic version of the ID card that includes new security measures and which in the future will be able to be carried on a mobile phone.
-The National Police has informed in a statement that it has completed the process of progressive implementation of the European DNI, which began in June and which updates its image, incorporates new security measures both visible and invisible.
-It also includes other changes such as the English name – National Identity Card – required by European regulations and a two-letter code of the Member State, in the case of Spain, ES.
-This body is working to soon implement the accreditation of identity through a mobile application that will allow citizens to access the document free of charge and have the electronic signature from their mobile device.
-It is also planned to launch the DNI Exprés in the coming months, a semi-automatic issuing system that aims to reduce waiting times during ordinary renewals of the identity document and increase security by obtaining a photograph at the same time. OTHER NEWS

What is the difference between the ‘covid passport’ and the vaccination certificate?: {Translation}
-What is the covid passport? It is a digital accreditation endorsed by the Ministry of Health and Brussels, which came into force on 1 July and allows EU citizens to travel freely in Europe. This means that wherever you go, you don’t have to undergo a PCR or quarantine. It is a free certificate issued in English and Spanish that indicates whether you have the full vaccination schedule or if you have only one vaccination. It also certifies whether a person is PCR negative and has recovered from the disease in the last 6 months. This passport is issued by the European Union.
-What is the vaccination certificate? It is a certificate issued by the health authorities of each country as soon as you have received the full vaccination schedule. Anyone who has this certificate can enter Spain without restrictions.
-What is the difference between them? The vaccination certificate is only for those who have received the full course of vaccinations and the covid passport certifies your virus status, which can be either PCR-negative, fully vaccinated, with one dose or having passed the disease.

Saturn will reach its closest point to Earth this evening (last night, but prime viewing will last for a month), making the ringed planet visible in the night sky: Saturn will reach its closest point to Earth tonight, giving sky watchers the perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of the ringed planet in all its beauty.
This evening will be the best time to see it as Earth moves almost directly between Saturn and the sun in an annual celestial event known as ‘opposition’.
It will be visible to the naked eye for everybody across the UK as soon as the sun sets, first appearing low on the horizon to the southeast and moving south up until 01:00 BST, when our solar system’s second-largest planet will be at its brightest in the night sky.
But don’t worry if you miss it or cloudy weather impedes your view, astronomers say you will still get a ‘decent’ glimpse of it any time next week and during the month ahead. French police clash with protesters over health pass requirement: Thousands of security forces have been deployed around Paris to confront citizens protesting plans to introduce coronavirus passes. The protests are the third in as many weeks.
Nationwide, around 204,000 people took part in protests across the country, according to the Interior Ministry. The numbers were up from the figures logged during protests last weekend.
In Paris, police used teargas and force when confronting protesters at four different rallies across the city. Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/french-police-clash-with-protesters-over-health-pass-requirement/a-58717872

Crowds in Berlin defy ban, protest coronavirus restrictions:
Local authorities banned several different protests this weekend, including one from the Stuttgart-based Querdenker movement, which expected 22,500 attendees. But protesters defied the ban, gathering Sunday around the city. Berlin’s police department, which deployed more than 2,000 officers, said as crowds grew, officers who sought to redirect protesters or disband larger groups were “harassed and attacked.”
“They tried to break through the police cordon and pull out our colleagues,” it said, adding that police had to use irritants and batons.
The protests, including in Berlin’s Charlottenburg neighborhood and Tiergarten Park, led to multiple arrests, police said.
Another 80,000 people also protested in cities across Italy last weekend. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/europe-health-arrests-coronavirus-pandemic-berlin-874d5e69750ffbb0e8364d15351cc3ad

OTHER NEWS

Desperate NSW calls in the ARMY to enforce hardcore lockdown on two million Sydneysiders after worst-ever Covid numbers: This follows NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s admission that she should have locked Sydney down sooner as NSW clocked 239 new cases on Thursday, just a day after extending the city’s lockdown for another four weeks.
Ms Berejiklian also announced two million Sydney residents living in one of eight hotspot LGAs in the west and south-western suburbs would have to wear a mask whenever they leave home. Those areas are Canterbury-Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Blacktown, Cumberland, Parramatta, Campbelltown and Georges River.
From midnight on Saturday morning, residents in those LGAs also cannot travel more than 5km from their home for essential shopping or for exercise. Study says vaccinated people can carry as much virus as others: In another dispiriting setback for the USA’s efforts to stamp out the coronavirus, scientists who studied a big COVID-19 outbreak in Massachusetts concluded that vaccinated people who got so-called breakthrough infections carried about the same amount of the coronavirus as those who did not get the shots.
The findings have the potential to upend past thinking about how the disease is spread. Previously, vaccinated people who got infected were thought to have low levels of virus and to be unlikely to pass it to others. But the new data shows that is not the case with the delta variant. Censorship News- YouTube suspends Sky News Australia channel: YouTube said Sunday it had barred Sky News Australia from uploading new content for one week, citing concerns about Covid-19 misinformation. (I don’t know about you, but I trust Sky News Australia far more than I trust YouTube when it comes to news accuracy. -Ed.)
Their last YouTube upload, from three days ago, features a host claiming that lockdowns have failed and criticising state authorities for extending Sydney’s current stay-at-home orders.
Sky News, with 1.86 million YouTube subscribers, confirmed the temporary ban and a spokesperson said “we support broad discussion and debate on a wide range of topics and perspectives which is vital to any democracy”. El Puente Christian Fellowship – Sunday Service
El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/El-Puente-Christian-Fellowship-105285888299225/or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.

Recommendations & Requests

Car Clean Malaga Recommendation: I would like to wholeheartedly recommend Warren at Car Clean Malaga if you need your vehicle sprucing up or valeting.
My Suzuki (pictured) is 15 years old and it now it looks as though it’s 2 years old, fantastic job on the exterior paintwork, headlights, wheels and interior (which was really filthy). He even cleaned the engine, a very reliable, trustworthy and concientous gentleman. The car was collected, a vehicle left with me in case of emergencies and returned within 48 hours.

Beware: A lady in Nerja centre yesterday had a man at her door in a block of flats in Nerja. (he had already gained entry through the main door.)
He said he was from Endesa and needed to check the appliances, as someone was having work done in the block and it was causing problems.
The lady was English and he spoke to her in English.
After she let him in he wanted her D N I number and would not accept her driving license and demanded to see her passport or T I E-card, which was in her bedroom.
She, went into her bedroom to get it, and during this time he was wanting her to turn appliances on and off. He then said he needed to go downstairs to the main fusebox to check something, and when he had not returned, she went to check and he and his companion had disappeared.
So had money from her purse which she had left out being so flustered. Initially he told her she should have received a letter informing her of their visit. So please everyone be on your guard !! and don´t let anyone into tour home.

SPAIN

Business Transactions In Cash Now Limited To Only €1000:
{Translation, summary}
It should be noted that this barrier only applies when “one of the intervening parties is acting as an entrepreneur or professional”. For example, if you go to a garage and the repair of your vehicle exceeds €1,000, you will not be able to pay in cash under any circumstances. Therefore, any shop or business will only be able to accept cash payments up to that amount. However, if it is a purchase between private individuals, e.g. furniture or a car, there would be no limitation.
The anti-fraud law has already entered into force and entails a reduction compared to the previous limit of 2,500 euros.
The measure affects Spanish companies and professionals. “However, the aforementioned amount will be 10,000 euros or its equivalent in foreign currency when the payer is a natural person who can justify that they do not have their tax domicile in Spain and are not acting as a businessperson or professional,” the law states. In other words, tourists coming to Spain will be able to enjoy a cash payment limit 10 times higher. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/economia/20210729/pu5gj3oxxbfqrb3b6zk27jdjra.html

Cat Mews- Velez Malaga approves new animal welfare ordinance and CER method: {Translation, summary}
The new ordinance, among other things, includes the implementation of a programme for the management and control of urban cat colonies through the ‘CER Method’ (Capture, Sterilisation and Return) with the aim of progressively reducing the cat population of each colony, creating a census of urban cats grouped in colonies in the municipality and encouraging the adoption of cats. This programme will be implemented by means of an action plan carried out by volunteers who will have a card approved by the City Council and who may be feeders, coordinators or capturers, and as those responsible for the cat colonies they will also have a series of obligations to fulfil. Germany tightens rules for travellers on virus concerns: Germany will require all unvaccinated travellers arriving in the country from Sunday to present a negative COVID-19 test result, stepping up health checks on returning holidaymakers amid concern over rising case loads in holiday destinations.

Djokovic had been aiming to become the first man to complete a ‘Golden Slam’ – winning Olympic gold and all four Grand Slams in one year. Football News- Rebel clubs to press on with Super League after court ruling: Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid vowed to press on with the European Super League project on Friday after a court ruled against what the clubs called “UEFA’s threats.”
A Spanish court on Friday threw out an appeal by UEFA against the decision this month to unwind the actions taken against all of the 12 Super League founding clubs.
The three remaining clubs not to abandon the Super League plan — Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus — released a joint statement welcoming the court’s decision against “UEFA’s monopolistic position over European football” and reiterated their stance to continue planning a breakaway competition.
A ruling by the mercantile court in Madrid on July 1, made on request by the Super League, declared null a battery of disciplinary measures that nine of the 12 clubs behind the Super League agreed to in May after a backlash against the proposed league.
It also voided the combined payment of 15 million euros ($17.8 million) by the nine clubs for what UEFA called a “gesture of goodwill,” as well as the pledge made by the nine that they would accept a fine of 100 million euros ($118 million) if they seek again to play in an unauthorized competition.

On-Line Scam Update- Phony Call Centers Tricking Users Into Installing “BazaLoader” Ransomware and Data Stealers: Targeted users are sent email messages informing them of a forthcoming subscription charge unless they call a specific phone number. By tricking the recipients into calling the number, the unsuspecting victims are connected with an actual human operator at a fraudulent call center, who then provides them with instructions to download the BazaLoader app to fix the issue, which is really malware. Because the victim installs the app, it evades detection by security software.
In May, Palo Alto Networks and Proofpoint revealed an elaborate infection mechanism that leveraged websites associated with fake ebooks (World Books) and movie streaming subscription services (BravoMovies) as a stepping stone to deliver rigged Excel spreadsheets containing the BazaLoader malware. The latest attack disclosed by Microsoft is no different in that the call center agent serves as a conduit, urging the caller to navigate to a recipe website (“topcooks[.]us”) in order to cancel the non-existent trial subscription.
Once comprimised, the attacker can move quickly within a network, conduct extensive data exfiltration and credential theft, and distribute ransomware. Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/07/phony-call-centers-tricking-users-into.html

Amazon Stock Loses $130 Billion In Market Value After EU regulators fine Amazon $1.2 billion for data protection violations: The Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection issued a decision against the company earlier this month, claiming that its processing of personal data did not comply with the European Union general data protection regulation.
Amazon has come under scrutiny by the EU before. In November regulators filed antitrust charges against the company, accusing Amazon of using its access to data from companies that sell products on its platform to gain an unfair advantage over them.
