ANDALUCÍA
Juanma Moreno maintains his absolute majority in Andalusia, while María Jesús Montero leads the PSOE to its worst historical result: {Trans, summary}
– Next Sunday, crucial elections will be held in Andalusia. Although they are regional elections, they will have a profound impact on national politics, and, for the moment, the battle appears to be going in favour of Juanma Moreno. According to the poll conducted by NC Report for LA RAZÓN, the current Andalusian president will maintain his absolute majority with 58 seats, three above the threshold, and 43.9% of the vote.
– In contrast, the PSOE could suffer its worst defeat in history. The poll estimates that the party led by former Vice President María Jesús Montero will win 28 seats and 22.8% of the vote. Vox is experiencing an increase, especially in voters under 30 years old, and would reach at least 15 seats. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/espana/juanma-moreno-mantiene…
MALAGA PROVINCE
Correos needs 40% more staff in Malaga to face the Andalusian elections and the migrant regularization process: {Trans, summary}
– A Spanish postal union warns of a 40% staff shortage in some Málaga offices, just days before the Andalusian elections on 17th May. This shortage, they claim, threatens two major processes: postal voting (processable until 13th May) and mass migrant regularisation (deadline 30th June). The union blames a “zero hiring” policy by Correos management, calling it “clearly insufficient”. They demand an extraordinary 40% staff increase, noting overburdened offices in coastal and capital areas. Retirements, medical leave, and other absences remain unfilled, forcing remaining staff to take on extra work. The union fears service collapse and urges urgent staffing boosts in delivery, offices, and logistics to protect citizens’ voting rights. TORROX
Outrage in Torrox over the expenditure of 45,000 euros on a partisan event just days before the elections: {Trans, summary}
– The PSOE spokesperson for Torrox, Mari Nieves Ramírez {pic}, has publicly denounced “the partisan use of a municipal event held to mark Senior Citizens Month, which, she says, has been turned into a real political rally for the PP just days before the Andalusian elections.”
– “If it was truly an institutional and municipal event, why weren’t the rest of the council invited? What happened shows that the PP is once again confusing public institutions with its party, organizing a clearly partisan event attended by PP political officials from all over the province and which, moreover, has cost more than 45,000 euros of public funds,” Ramírez criticized. ALMUÑÉCAR
Almuñécar wins highest national beach cleaning award:
– Almuñécar town hall’s beach cleaning boats, a service that every summer ensures that the water along the coastline is kept clean, have earned the Costa Tropical town the ‘Escoba de Platino 2026,’ (platinum broom 2026), the highest recognition awarded by the national association of urban cleaning companies (ATEGRUS), for the water cleaning system implemented on its beaches.
– The councillor for beaches, Lucía González, said: “Receiving the Escoba de Platino is a source of enormous pride for Almuñécar and La Herradura, because it recognises the daily effort made by the town hall to keep our beaches in the best possible condition throughout the year”. She added that “this award also comes just a day after the renewal of the Blue Flags of our beaches and Marina del Este, which shows that Almuñécar continues to be a benchmark in environmental quality, services and sustainability along the entire Andalusian coastline”. IMMIGRATION IN SPAIN
The State Attorney’s Office rejects suspending the regularization of immigrants- he claims no “impact” on public services: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish State Legal Service argues against suspending the immigrant regularisation decree promoted by the government. It warns that suspension would gravely harm the general interest, as the measure is already in force and its effects would be rendered useless. Granting residence permits does not impact public services, since recipients already use them, but does allow access to work, boosting social security contributions. {This is deceptive, unregistered illegal aliens do not have access to most public services. The only public services unregistered illegal aliens can access is health and public schools for children. Unregistered illegal immigrants only received the access to health services in March 2026; previously only emergency medical treatment was available. Their impact is only now beginning to be seen, as waiting lists and appointment times are growing once again according to recent reports. -Ed.}
– They continued, suspension would leave applicants in a legal vacuum, potentially causing irregular status and job loss. The deadline of 30 June makes delay particularly damaging. Irreversible harm from proceeding is dismissed, as authorisations create no irreversible acquired rights. The State also denies Hazte Oír has active standing to appeal, as the association shows no concrete, direct, singular interest or specific harm distinct from any citizen or entity. MIDDLE EAST
Trump rejects in full the latest Iranian proposal to end the war: {Trans, summary}
– After several days of delay and more than a month since the truce came into effect, Iranian authorities yesterday, through Pakistani mediation, submitted their response to the Trump administration’s proposal to end the war. While further details are still pending, the state news agency IRNA simply stated in a dispatch that the Islamic Republic’s response focuses on guaranteeing an end to the conflict on all fronts, including Lebanon, and “maritime security” around the Strait of Hormuz.
– US President Donald Trump reacted by saying that this latest proposal is “totally unacceptable.” “I just read the response from the so-called ‘representatives’ of Iran. I don’t like it at all.” In its counteroffer, Tehran is offering to transfer part of its highly enriched uranium stockpile to a third country, but has rejected the idea of dismantling its nuclear facilities, as demanded by the United States.
– Coinciding with the news coming from Tehran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned in an interview that “the war is not over” while his troops continued to severely punish Hezbollah in Lebanon yesterday and the US president declared the Islamic Republic “militarily defeated”.
– From Tehran, the spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Committee, Ebrahim Rezaei, warned US authorities against any attacks on vessels in the Gulf and asserted that Iran’s restraint had come to an end. “Our restraint has ended as of today. Any attack on our vessels will trigger a strong and decisive Iranian response against US ships and bases,” Rezaei wrote in X. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/internacional/trump…

Tennis News- Davidovich says goodbye to Roma in the third round against Rublev: {Trans, summary}
– Russian Andrei Rublev this Monday defeated Malaga’s Alexander Davidovich, by winning in the third round of the Rome Masters 1000 in two sets: 6-4 and 6-4.
– The Russian, number 14, achieved his first victory against a top-30 this year and will face the winner of the duel between the American Brandon Nakashima and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili. Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/deportes/2026/05/11/davidovich…
SCIENCE
Archaeologists discover an ancient Roman military camp while excavating a garden in Frankfurt District- it is over 2,200 years old: {Trans, summary}
– Renovation of a historic palace in Frankfurt’s Höchst district has uncovered a Roman military camp over 2,000 years old, found in the gardens during works preliminary to its conversion into a museum space. The site revealed fortifications, characteristic pottery from southern ancient Gaul, and various coins originating from territories now corresponding to France and Belgium. These finds indicate a structured military settlement rather than a temporary one. Its elevated position near the Nidda and Main rivers shows strategic control of routes, fitting Rome’s northward expansion logic. Previously, Roman presence in this area was seen as temporary, but these remains suggest more stable occupation, possibly with legionaries and auxiliaries. Consequently, Frankfurt’s history as a Roman frontier territory must be reconsidered: instead of marginal or purely military, the region likely hosted interaction between military infrastructure, trade routes, and civilian settlements. No signs of violent destruction suggest a gradual transition in land use rather than sudden abandonment. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/ciencia/arqueologos-descubren-antiguo…
HEALTH
Malaga Expired Lab Chemical Scandal Update- “If it expires, don’t throw it away”, this is how use of obsolete chemicals for analysis in a public hospital in Malaga was encouraged: {Trans, summary}
– Laboratory staff at La Axarquía District Hospital (Torre del Mar, Málaga) allegedly kept and reused expired reagents between 2020 and 2025, according to WhatsApp messages, photographs, and five testimonies verified by a forensic IT expert. Messages showed staff being told not to throw away expired reagents but to “trick” machines by changing expiry dates or mixing remnants with good reagents. Photographs showed bottles wrapped in film with handwritten dates and overlapping labels reading “expired” and “fixed. Use.” Two middle managers are accused of encouraging the practice to save money. The hospital manager filed an internal complaint.
– The Andalusian Health Service called the complaint false but did not explain the evidence. A trade union took the case to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and in response, the named managers in the accusation sued the union for false accusation. Manufacturers say expired reagents can produce unreliable results, compromising diagnosis and treatment.
– The people providing their testimony in this report do so on condition of anonymity. “Everyone knows it is true. I just want it never to happen again, and anyone who thinks of doing something similar should know that there were consequences,” says one of them. “People’s health has been gambled with. There are people who are glad this has come to light, but they are afraid,” says another. Others have given their testimony, with full names, in the complaint filed with the Public Prosecutor’s Office. HANTAVIRUS UPDATES
Health authorities failed to detect two cases of hantavirus that were later confirmed on flights returning to their countries: {Trans, summary}
– Health authorities in Spain failed to detect two cases of hantavirus from the cruise ship MV Hondius, both later confirmed only after passengers had boarded flights to their home countries. A French woman tested positive after exhibiting symptoms during the flight from Tenerife to Paris. Simultaneously, United States authorities confirmed that one American citizen repatriated from the same vessel tested mildly positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus, whilst another presented mild symptoms. Both Americans travelled on a State Department flight before their diagnoses were established.
– Spanish Minister Mónica García {pic} had previously stated that epidemiological checks and tests confirmed all passengers were asymptomatic upon leaving Tenerife. These later confirmations in France and the United States directly contradict that assertion, revealing that at least two infected individuals were cleared to fly. Four other French citizens tested negative but remain hospitalised for 15 days as ‘close contact’ cases. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/sociedad/sanidad-detecto-dos…

A French passenger from hantavirus-hit ship has tested positive for the virus:
– A French passenger who was on a cruise ship hit by a hantavirus outbreak has tested positive for the virus and her condition is deteriorating, French Health Minister Stephanie Rist said on Monday. She developed symptoms on the flight to Paris. The four other French passengers tested negative but will be re-tested, she told France Inter radio, adding that so far French authorities have traced 22 contact cases. “What is key, is to act at the start and break the virus transmission chains. This is what we are doing with the Prime Minister, notably with a decree that came out today that will allow us to strengthen isolation measures for contact cases and to protect the population,” she said.
