Portugal is currently battling six active fires and fears that one of them could cross the border into Spain: {Trans, summary}

Roots Of The Wildfires– explained by ASAJA, the Asociación Agraria de Jóvenes Agricultores (Agricultural Association of Young Farmers), despite the name it is not limited to young farmers. – The creation of a committee of experts to analyse the causes of forest fires has failed to convince ASAJA Vice-President Juan Luis Delgado. In an interview with esRadio, he argued that those who live and work in the countryside have been warning for years about the deterioration of Spain’s forests and called for farmers, livestock breeders and rural residents to be listened to before any new measures are introduced.
– Interviewed by Sandra León on La Noche de Cuesta, Delgado expressed concern over the Government’s announcement and said: “The idea of yet another new scientific body they want to establish fills me with dread,” arguing that decisions affecting rural areas are being made “from offices far removed from the rural world.”
– The ASAJA Vice-President began by expressing solidarity with those affected by the fires and with the emergency crews fighting them, before arguing that the current situation “was entirely predictable”. In his view, forest fires have always existed, but in the past they were kept under control because people still lived in rural villages and the forests were constantly managed and used.
– He believes the real problem lies in the gradual abandonment of rural areas and the restrictions placed on forest management. “The countryside has been completely abandoned, and so have all the people who live there,” he said, regretting that neither farmers nor livestock breeders have been consulted when designing forestry policies.
– During the interview, Delgado criticised the administrative obstacles that, he said, forest owners face even when carrying out basic maintenance work.
– As an example, he pointed to restrictions on cutting branches above a certain thickness because, according to the rules, doing so could damage the tree. However, he argued that the ban often has the opposite effect, as trees are eventually blown down by strong winds, creating an even greater build-up of combustible material.
– He also criticised the requirement to obtain prior authorisation for many routine tasks. “We have far more paperwork, and we spend more time dealing with bureaucracy than actually managing the land,” he said.
– The ASAJA Vice-President also questioned some of the measures included in the eco-schemes of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), introduced as part of the European Green Deal. He explained that certain subsidies require grazing land to remain unused until 1 September, which, in his opinion, encourages the build-up of dry vegetation during the height of summer. “If a fire starts in that environment now, there is no way anyone will be able to control it,” he warned. He also criticised the requirement to establish certain strips of vegetation, arguing that “those hedges are fuel” and that such measures are based more on theoretical ideas than on practical knowledge of the countryside.
– Asked who he considered responsible for the current situation, Delgado rejected the idea of blaming a single authority. He noted that many of the regulations originate from the European Union but pointed out that member states also play a role in drafting them. “You cannot say the blame lies with just one party. I believe it rests with all those responsible for managing these matters,” he said, adding that farming organisations repeatedly put forward proposals which are simply ignored.
– As for possible solutions, Delgado called for policies that encourage people to return to rural areas, reduce bureaucracy and make it easier for farmers and livestock breeders to help with both fire prevention and the initial response to outbreaks. He suggested that people who already have water tankers and agricultural machinery should be equipped to intervene when fires first break out.
He also urged owners of forest land to keep their properties clear of combustible material and regretted that interest in fire prevention tends to disappear once major wildfires have been brought under control.
– In conclusion, he called for the proposed committee of experts to include people with direct, practical experience of working on the land. “The greatest expert who could probably offer some valuable insight would be the oldest resident of any village in this country,” he said, arguing that practical experience of rural life should carry far greater weight in forest management. Report– Spain Failed to Spend Most EU Funds Earmarked for Wildfire Prevention: {Trans, summary}
– Spain is facing another severe wildfire season despite having hundreds of millions of euros in available European funding that has yet to be spent on prevention. According to AIReF (Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility), only €105.7 million of the €401 million allocated for sustainable forest management, climate risk prevention and firefighting had been formally committed by July 2026, just 26.4% of the total. Nearly €295 million remained unused, while only about 120 of more than 310 planned projects had started.

Manufacturers will have to repair mobile phones and household appliances that are out of warranty– this is what the new law, which will soon come into force, says: {Trans, summary}
– New EU rules taking effect from 31 July give consumers stronger rights to repair a range of household appliances and electronic devices, even after the legal warranty has expired.
– Manufacturers must offer repairs when technically possible for products covered by EU repairability rules, including mobile phones, tablets, televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and tumble dryers. They cannot refuse a repair simply because an independent company repaired the item previously.
– Repairs outside the warranty period do not have to be free, but manufacturers may only charge reasonable prices and cannot use excessive costs to discourage repairs. They must also complete repairs within a reasonable time and may provide a temporary replacement device in some cases.
– The legislation also improves access to spare parts, repair tools and service information, making it easier for both official and independent repair businesses to fix products and helping consumers keep appliances working for longer. Health declares San Juan de Aznalfarache (Sevilla) on alert for the Nile virus and extends that of Palomares del Río, making 15 Andalusian municipalities now on alert: {Trans, summary}
– The Ministry of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies of the Government of Andalusia has declared area on alert due to circulation of West Nile virus (WNV) the Sevillian municipality of San Juan de Aznalfarache, after the surveillance system detected mosquitoes carriers of the virus in various traps. Health it has also confirmed a new circulation of the virus in Palomares del Río, municipality that already remained on alert, so the declaration is extended until August 11, 2026. This alert is added to the others activated over the weekend: in Fuengirola and Las Lagunas, Mijas.
– With the addition of San Juan de Aznalfarache, there are now 15 municipalities in Andalucía where the virus has been detected and which have been officially declared alert areas: Torredonjimeno in Jaén; Salobreña in Granada; Almensilla, Aznalcázar, Bollullos de la Mitación, Coria del Río, Constantina, Gelves, La Puebla del Río, Mairena del Aljarafe, Palomares del Río, San Juan de Aznalfarache and Villamanrique de la Condesa in the province of Sevilla; Fuengirola and Las Lagunas, part of the municipality of Mijas in Málaga province.
– Viral circulation was also detected in Benacazón (Sevilla) and Bujalance (Córdoba). However, the mosquito trapping sites were located more than 1.5 km from the urban centres, so it was not necessary to declare them alert areas.
– Pulpí, in Almería province, completed its monitoring period as an alert area last Friday, 24 July.

– Conor McGregor ‘s return to the UFC on July 12th was a complete disappointment. The Irishman was injured while attempting to surprise Max Holloway with a high kick in the opening seconds of the UFC 329 main event.
– A few days ago, the fighter confirmed the diagnosis: an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus tear. It’s the exact same injury he suffered in his first fight with Holloway in 2013, although on that occasion, a much younger McGregor, with everything to gain, continued the fight and ended up winning by decision.
– Despite what happened, the Irishman remained optimistic. “With current advances in regenerative medicine and improved training methods, it’s entirely possible I’ll be back next summer,” he posted on social media.
