President of the PSOE of Seville launches an anti-Semitic insult against Elías Bendodo (PP) on Twitter: {Translation, summary} – The honorary president of the PSOE of Seville, Amparo Rubiales, has launched an anti-Semitic insult against the number three of the Popular Party, Elías Bendodo from Malaga, whom she has accused on Twitter of being a “Nazi Jew”. – Rubiales, with a very long career in Andalusian socialism, currently holds an honorary position in Seville’s PSOE and is very active on social networks, especially during electoral periods. Three days ago, she took advantage of some statements in which Bendodo criticized the call by President Sanchez for elections in the middle of summer holiday and called Bendodo a “Nazi Jew.” Source, Spanish: https://www.diariosur.es/malaga/presidenta-psoe-sevilla-lanza-insulto-antisemita-elias-bendodo-pp-20230607135255-nt.html

Anti-squatter home insurance launches in Spain: – Direct Line is set to launch Spain’s first ‘anti-okupa’ home insurance, which offers protection against the phenomenon of squatters occupying empty homes, a problem that is on the rise in Spain. The insurer estimates that in 2022 there were roughly 16,700 complaints about squatters, known as ‘okupas’ in Spanish, which works out to around 45 every single day. – The coverage will include loss of income, accommodation for the owner, supplies, damages and legal expenses, something important as getting squatters removed from a property can be a lengthy legal process in Spain. – According to Spain’s General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), it often takes up to a year and a half to ‘unoccupy’ a house – that is, get squatters removed from a property, even if you are the legal owner. In 2021, the average period that the owners waited in Spain was 18.1 months. – A homeowners group, Victims of Occupation Platform, estimates that the problem of illegal property occupation affects around 100,000 properties throughout Spain. – The new anti-occupation coverage insurance will be formally launched and presented on Monday, June 12th, at a press conference led by Direct Line’s commercial director Diego Ferreiro. Football News- Lionel Messi to join Inter Miami after leaving PSG: – Argentina legend Lionel Messi will join American side Inter Miami after his exit from French champions Paris St-Germain. The former Barcelona forward is set to reject a more lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. The Miami deal includes collaboration from brands like Adidas and Apple. – He wanted to remain in Europe for another season but, after no satisfactory offers were received, he had the straight choice between Inter Miami or Al-Hilal. He was heavily tipped to be favouring a move to Saudi Arabia, where he would have joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the league in a deal that could not be matched financially. But Messi was ultimately tempted to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami for a variety of reasons including lifestyle, and a deal with big brands that extends beyond football. He already owns a house in Miami, which he rents out. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65832658

Researchers successfully test one-time injection to permanently spay female cats: – This Tuesday, the journal Nature Communications published an article with the first results of an injection developed in the United States to sterilize female cats. Researchers have used a virus to introduce a hormone, called antiMüllerian hormone (AMH), into the body of these animals to inhibit ovulation and prevent gestation. – The study was carried out with nine female cats, with six treated and three as a control group. The initial data shows the efficacy of this method and opens an alternative route to surgery. None of the treated cats became pregnant and no side effects were observed four years after the test. This came as no surprise to the researchers, as the study’s lead author, William Swansson, explains: “This is a natural protein, which is already produced by females. The concentration of the hormone at higher than normal levels slows down ovulation.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2023-06-07/researchers-successfully-test-one-time-injection-to-permanently-spay-female-cats.html

Compare Funerals cover the whole of Spain ruthforder@comparefuneral.org * Direct Cremation €2,250 * Collection of deceased and conveyance to Funeral Home * Supply of coffin * Preparation and care of deceased * Registration of death and certification of all legal documentation * Cremation and any doctor’s fees * Supply of Urn * Delivery of Urn and associated paperwork to family (death certificate, cremation certificate etc) This plan is exclusive to a number of provinces, please ask advisor for more information. Contact Ruth Forder on 0034 693 715 718 ; Comparefuneral.org Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain – Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions. – Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials. – Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be. – Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name. – What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you. – Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

DoctorLaptop’s Computer Repairs & Services: Have your computer properly maintained with an annual professional servicing to keep it clean, running cool and thus extend its life. You don’t wait till your car engine freezes before you change your oil, now do you? If you do, the repair costs far more than the oil changes you skipped. It’s the same with computers. An inexpensive annual maintenance service is far cheaper than waiting until the device is annoyingly slow and popping up error messages, and thus in need of an expensive repair. Protect your computer & your privacy with annual servicing. The Doctor is closed on weekends. I do not work on computers that are more than 8 years old (pre 2015), unless they have been receiving annual servicing by me. Eurobarometer- Spaniards among the most dissatisfied with their government in the entire EU: {Translation, summary} – The Eurobarometer data for the month of June show that 3 out of 4 Spaniards disapprove of the measures carried out by the Government against inflation. – 61% of Europeans believe that the general situation is going in the wrong direction in the country in which they reside. This disapproval escalates to 71% in the case of the Spanish , a figure only surpassed by the citizens of Slovakia, Greece and France. – Regarding the measures approved by the respective governments to deal with the rise in prices, the percentage of dissatisfied Spaniards increased to 77%, 12 points more than the European average of 65%. – Two out of three Spaniards believe that their standard of living has decreased and they expect it to continue to do so over the next year. Only the inhabitants of Cyprus (76%) have a worse perception in this section. In addition, only one in 10 Spaniards believes that their economic situation in the country will improve over the next year. Feijóo (PP) says that if elected president he will repeal the Law of Memory and the Trans Law, and review the Euthanasia Law and the Education Laws: {Translation, summary} – The president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has assured that if he governs after the general elections on 23 July he will repeal the Law of Democratic Memory and the Trans Law, while he will review or make “adjustments” to other regulations approved by the government of Pedro Sánchez, such as the Euthanasia Law or the Education Law. In addition, he has advanced that if he reaches the Moncloa Palace in the first hundred days of his mandate, he will lower personal income tax on incomes of less than 40,000 euros and will approve a modification of the Organic Law of the Judiciary so that judges elect judges. – “What I am going to repeal is lies. I am going to repeal deceit. I am going to repeal arrogance, I am going to repeal sectarianism, I am going to try to do the way of doing politics that I believe in and therefore I am going to repeal Sanchismo”, said Feijóo in an interview on Onda Cero, when asked expressly which regulations he will repeal and whether one of them will be the Euthanasia Law. – Feijóo explained that his aim is to “return to political dignity” and, therefore, that the Bildu party should not be “the author” of legislation such as the Law of Democratic Memory because “it is a historical absurdity”. That said, he has guaranteed that if he wins and reaches Moncloa he will “repeal a series of laws that are minority laws that were imposed on the majorities to maintain Sánchez’s coalition”. ***”EASIER TO CHANGE SEX THAN TO GET A DRIVING LICENCE”*** – Thus, the president of the PP has confirmed that if elected he will repeal the Law of Democratic Memory and also the Trans Law, that he sees as a “nonsense” that “attacks minors”, “doctors”, “feminist collectives” and “common sense”. “It is much easier to legally change one’s sex than to pass the university entrance exam. It is much easier to change sex than to get a driving licence”, he complained, adding that there will be “a Trans Law” because there is a “trans collective” in Spain, but it will not be the law approved by Pedro Sánchez’s government. ANDALUCIA
New Law Draft- Tourist dwellings in Andalucia mandated to have a sound level meter to control noise & other new requirements: {Translation, summary} – The Junta de Andalucía has published the draft of the new law that will regulate tourist homes – which will be renamed from being for “tourist purposes” to for “tourist use” – and which will allow town councils to regulate, always “in a justified manner”, these types of flats via urban plans. It will also oblige them, in the event that the final text is maintained once the decree is approved, to install sound meters inside to control noise and avoid problems of coexistence with neighbours. – The text also maintains the possibility for residents’ associations to prohibit, in the same way, this practice within their blocks. But it is not the only thing that the Junta de Andalucía incorporates, it also protects professional management companies, allowing them to have more than two tourist flats in their portfolio, the maximum number allowed by the text to private owners in each province – that is, an owner could manage two tourist flats in Malaga and another two in Cadiz without breaking any rules, but could not have two in Torrox and two in Marbella, for example. – In addition, they establish minimum requirements for accommodating tourists, such as ventilation and natural light, heating and air conditioning; a minimum of 14 square metres per place offered, as well as a minimum number of bathrooms per place – or the obligation to have a kitchen or to take the details of guests, as they already do in hotels and tourist flats. – The Andalusian Association of Professionals of Tourist Homes and Apartments (AVVAPro) is in favour of giving local councils the power to regulate the sector in their territory, but warns: “It is not a blank cheque, the councils will have to justify very well why they take certain measures, with criteria of proportionality and necessity that must be justified,” says Pérez-Lanzac, who recalls that AVVAPro has lawsuits in progress against the councils of Seville and Cadiz for approving in recent months regulations against tourist accommodation without taking into account criteria of proportionality or general interest. The budget for this action amounts to more than 780,000 euros and its execution will last for eight months. – This work is included in the third drought decree approved by the Andalusian Government and is being carried out to improve the quality of water supply to the towns of Almáchar, Benamargosa, El Borge, Comares, Cútar, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Totalán, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja. – Considering the current historic minimum levels of the reservoir and that the foreseeable rise in temperatures could affect the quality of the surface water in the reservoir, this emergency action has been declared. It implements a floating water catchment in the reservoir basin and a pumping drive to the intake tower that allows water to be brought in from other levels less affected by the deterioration in quality. The rupture of an irrigation pond without a license in Cómpeta pours thousands of liters into the Turvilla River: {Translation} – The breakage of a large irrigation pond, built without a license , has caused the loss of tens of thousands of litres of water in Cómpeta. The events occurred at noon last Sunday on an avocado farm located in the area of Las Zorreras-Los Llanos, on the border with the municipality of Canillas de Albaida. – The water storage infrastructure, which would be recently built, cracked on one of its sides for reasons that are unknown and are investigated. The rupture caused the discharge of a good part of its water reserves into a stream that leads to the Turvilla River, which crosses the municipalities of Canillas de Albaida, Árchez, Sayalonga and Algarrobo, nourishing hundreds of hectares of subtropical. – According to SUR, the irrigation pond had the capacity to store about 6,400 cubic meters of water, but was at half capacity at the time of the break. The incident has not caused significant personal or material damage, although the flow generated dragged several avocado trees, irrigation gums and damaged a part of the farm of the owner of the affected pond. No, the Illuminati don’t want to recruit you, it’s a cyberscam: {Translation, summary} – There is a global spam campaign in which cybercriminals use the Illuminati theme to lure their targets. They make false promises, but in reality what they seek is to get the credentials and money of those who take the bait. – In these communications, friends of outsiders posing as Illuminati recruiters promised monthly salaries of $200,000 or more, a new house, celebrity dates, a magic talisman, and access to Bohemian Grove, an exclusive elite social club. – To be part of the company you had to fill out a complete form where, obviously, you were ‘giving away’ sensitive data to hackers, such as full name, date of birth, address, telephone number, occupation, monetary value, email address, marital status, age and a current photo. This could allow scammers to commit identity theft crimes. – Previous versions of this scam relied on email, now it has spread to popular messengers and social media posts. Caracolia- the new festival dedicated to snails will be held in Seville on Friday June 9th and Sat, June 10th: {Translation} – The consumption of snails in Seville is one of the many traditions that spring brings. Hundreds of establishments hang the sign on their façades and focus every afternoon on welcoming dozens of customers looking for that typical tapas at this time of year. Aware of this situation, the Seville Hotel and Catering Association and the Seville Academy of Gastronomy and Tourism (with the collaboration of the Seville City Office) have joined forces to create the city’s first Snail Festival, which they have christened “Caracolia”. – The event will take place this Friday and Saturday (9 and 10 June) on the Paseo de Colón and will bring together 13 establishments from Seville and its province, which will transfer their point of sale to this ephemeral snail fair. *Participants* – Among the participating establishments are La Cochera del Tranvía (Ronda de Triana), El Cateto (Sinaí, 25), El Picadero (Manuel Arellano), Bar Tribuna (Concha Espina, 9), El Pica (8 de marzo, 19), Yumai (Manila, 11) and Bar Timonel (Bami, 3), as well as the recently reopened Casa Diego (Esperanza de Triana, 19) and La Mina (Cuesta del Rosario, 7). – Bars from the area are also taking part, such as Maino Lebrija (Tetuán, 24, Lebrija), Bar Morillo (avda. de Utrera, 124, Los Palacios), Taberna El Miguelete (Tetuán, 24, Lebrija) and El Rancho de Gines (avda. de Colón, 8, Gines). *Prices* _Entrance to the venue costs three euros and includes a drink, while snail tapas are priced at 3 euros and cabrillas at 4 euros. It will take place on Friday at 21.10, and will be followed by the presentation of the flamenco festival La Caracolá de Lebrija, by Pepe Martínez, the town’s delegate for culture. Doctor On Nadal’s Surgery: ‘We Have A High Chance Of Success’: – The arthroscopic surgery on the left psoas tendon injury, which has kept Nadal sidelined since this year’s Australian Open, consisted of cleaning the fibrotic and degenerated areas of the tendon both proximal and distal, as well as stitching it to adequately reinforce it. The team also tended to an old injury to the labrum of the Spaniard’s left hip. – On Saturday, after the operation was completed, Ruiz Cotorro returned from Barcelona to Paris to continue to help the Spanish players who are still in Roland Garros. There, he spoke about Nadal’s procedure. – “We reached this situation for various reasons,” explained the doctor. “We had a core issue – injuring a muscle is not the same as a tendon. When we put it under large loads, the tendon was not responding because it was not strong enough.” “I’m happy because we’ve done what we wanted to… We’re very satisfied and if we respect the recovery times, I think he will be able to recover. Rushing is never a good idea. It’s five months, but we’re not pushing for a particular date.” – Ruiz Cotorro, of course, is quite optimistic about the recovery of the Spaniard, who plans to return in 2024 and retire that season. Collapse of Spain’s far-left complicates vote for Sánchez: – The disastrous local election results chalked up by Podemos and its hard-left allies have left them floundering ahead of Spain’s July vote, jeopardising Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s bid for re-election. The outcome of the May 28th local and regional elections was “very bad for the whole of the hard-left”, said Anton Losada, a political scientist from Santiago de Compostela University, referring to parties to the left of Sánchez’s Socialists. – Podemos, the junior partner in Sánchez’s coalition and the main hard-left actor, saw its support collapse in the municipal vote and the faction even disappeared altogether in several regions, including Madrid and Valencia. – For Lluís Orriols, a political scientist at Madrid’s Carlos III University, the result was the final nail in the coffin for the hard left, marking its “failure” to put up a united front that would inspire its voters. Maracena opens its new recreation area for dogs in the Primero de Mayo park: {Translation, summary} – Maracena now has a dog play area in the Primero de Mayo park. The Agility area covers an area of 200 square metres, providing ample space for dogs to enjoy and explore. With the aim of providing a safe and entertaining environment, an obstacle course has been installed (walkway, high fence jumping, tunnel, etc.) where dogs can test their skills and dexterity. One of the highlights of this new enclosure is its focus on dog safety. The dog play area has a double security gate and a metal fence more than one and a half metres high, ensuring that the dogs cannot leave the enclosure and guaranteeing the owners’ peace of mind. The play area includes a drinking fountain to ensure the hydration of pets during their stay. – Similar areas are expected to open soon in the Barranco San Jerónimo park and in the 28 de Febrero park. German campaign to boycott Spanish strawberries is launched amid water-use fears: Campact, a group that says it has no links with specific parties, launched an online petition this week demanding large retail chains do not sell strawberries from Spain. They argue that their production is contributing to the drying up of Doñana National Park in Andalucía. Germany is also a producer of berries and Spanish ones are seen as a direct competitor in this market. Nearly 10,000 Hunter Biden Laptop photos, docs appear on organized website that also contains Ashley Biden’s notorious diary: – Nearly 10,000 photos from Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop, which Hunter has admitted is his, were uploaded to a new website – [BidenLaptopMedia D0T com], which has been intermittently unavailable since launch due to overwhelming traffic. {Warning: I had no problem accessing the site. Some of the photos contain sexual content, drug use, screen captures of messenger conversations with objectionable language and other images some readers will find offensive. -Ed} – The site, which took months to complete, is the brainchild of former Trump White House aide, Garrett Ziegler, who worked as an aide to economic adviser Peter Navarro. “It’s taken us a couple of months to, one, go through the photos, about 10,000 of them, and redact the genitalia on the photos,” said Ziegler. – The website also features a copy of Ashley Biden’s diary (Pres. Biden’s daughter) where she discusses taking “showers, probably not appropriate” with her father, blaming him for her promiscuous lifestyle as a young adult {pic}. Ashley Biden’s notorious diary is 100 percent real, according to newly released court documents from the ongoing case against Project Veritas. The diary came to light after a Florida woman who stayed in the room Ashley Biden vacated at the halfway house discovered it in 2020 and sold it for $40,000 to a media organization, Project Veritas. US Presidential Elections – Imagine This…The Return Of Obama: – If Joe Biden were to choose Barak Obama as his vice-president running mate instead of Kamala Harris, and they win the 2024 election, and then Biden dies or becomes incapacitated, that makes Obama president. Yikes! Obama is ineligible to run again for president, but nothing stops him from attaining any other office, including the vice-presidency, or even from being president again, as long as he didn’t run in the election to capture the presidency. Treatment Breakthrough for an Intractable Brain Cancer: An experimental drug significantly delayed the growth of a pernicious type of brain tumor, a major advance in a field that has made little progress for decades. Patients with low-grade gliomas who took the drug vorasidenib from Servier Pharmaceuticals after surgery staved off cancer growth for more than twice as long as patients who didn’t take the drug, a study published Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine showed. The drug was so successful that researchers in March revealed who was part of the placebo group to offer them treatment. Gmail App Goes Full AI- Consider Anything In It To Be Public Knowledge: – (In order to implement this, AI has access to everything in your Gmail account, analyses it, stores it even after you delete items, and shares all of it with other AIs on its networks. Never write any password for any account in an email, use a voice phone call if you must share a password. -Ed.) – This is coming to the Gmail apps for Android and iOS (phones & tablets), and should be rolling out for everyone now. As yet, there’s no word on whether or not the same feature will be making an appearance in the (computer) desktop web interface for Gmail. – AI has been built into Gmail for years of course, with features like Smart Reply composing short automated replies for you. In recent months, Google has been pushing more advanced, generative AI as a way of composing your emails. – More AI features are heading to search on the web too, while development on the ChatGPT rival Google Bard continues at a steady pace. We can expect plenty more announcements like this one in the months and years ahead. – Google and other tech companies seem to have no qualms about pushing out AI features as quickly as they possibly can at the moment, which is what tends to happen in a competitive, emerging field when several players are trying to get out in front. – However, we’d query just how useful all of this AI is going to end up being. Sure, having the option to generate text messages in the style of Shakespeare is quite fun – but wouldn’t most people prefer to use their own words from their own heads when keeping up conversations with friends and family? Minigolf La Herradura: -Minigolf and More! Of course the star of Minigolf La Herradura is the 18-hole course. A challenge for beginners, a test to keep winnowing down your score for intermediate players and, to be honest, for the “profis”, a place to show off. However, that is just the beginning. – Also available at Minigolf and included in the all-day admission ticket are among other things: mini paddle and mini tennis, Air badminton, volleyball, boxing and related cardio exercise, petanque, basketball, real golf swing technique, American flag football, baseball, and much more. In other words, you can think of Minigolf La Herradura as not just a place to enjoy a leisurely hour or two of mirth, light-hearted banter and ribbing amongst family and friends playing a round or two of minigolf, but as an active recreational sport area as well. Or both, it’s all part of your entry fee. All of the equipment that you’ll need to play these various other sports and games (see photos below) is included, though on a first come-first serve basis. And I will be happy to show you how to use the different gizmos and explain the rules to the games if they’re new to you. -Is there parking nearby? Yes indeed. The best bet is to park along the beach’s berm which for the most part is free. One important hint: dashed blue lines require a visit to the closest parking meter. There you will find the time table informing you when it is necessary to buy a ticket, (very cheap). -Location: We could not be easier to find. We are just two small alleys off the beachfront Paseo directly behind the children’s playground, the Centro de Salud, post office and newly remodeled market/food court. Please visit our website: http://www.minigolflh.es for a Google map which pins us down exactly. (PS: Our contact details can be found in the Sponsor’s Section at the bottom of every issue.) -Admission fee: Current pricing is: six euros for 12 and unders, 8,50€ for 13 and over. Family discounts are also on offer such as 2 adults and 2 children for only 25 euros. This price includes all activities on the grounds and is valid for the entire day. Feel free to ring proprietor Scott Huston with any questions you might have on +34 603 416 632. -New June Opening Hours: For the month of June we will now be open from11:30am until 2:00pm and 6:00pm until 10:00pm six days a week (closed Wednesday). Because I work alone, it is recommended though to call in advance for confirmation. Best regards, Señor Minigolf, Scott Huston / La Herradura

DGT plan to shorten the license renewal periods for drivers over 65 years of age suspended: {Translation, summary} – The call for early elections has caused a domino effect in terms of the entry into force of new laws. The Directorate General of Traffic was seeking to reduce the period from five to two years, but the suspension of the plenary session of Congress implies this measure, which sought to make drivers in this group take a clinical examination, is paralysed for the time being. Spain’s opposition leader admits he can’t speak English, ‘but will study it’: Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain’s main opposition party, the right-wing People’s Party (PP), whom polls suggest could be Spain’s next prime minister after the forthcoming general election on 23 July, acknowledged on Thursday that he doesn’t speak English but brushed it off saying there would always be ‘translators’. “My problem is English … I have to start studying it,” he told Telecinco TV in his first interview since the PP scored a major victory in Sunday’s local and regional elections, “International summits normally have translators and what’s most important is that I know what I want to say.’ Full article: https://www.spainenglish.com/2023/06/01/spain-opposition-leader-admits-cant-speak-english/

President Pedro Sánchez goes on the attack, labelling the PP and Vox as being both far-right: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez went on the attack on Wednesday, ahead of the 23 July general election, which he said would be a vote for Spain being ‘a country of rights’, or ‘a Spain of the far right’. In an address to his socialist (PSOE) MPs, Sánchez said there was ‘no difference’ between the People’s Party (PP), who regard themselves as ‘conservative’, and (for what he called) the “far-right Vox group”, and he warned they would together ‘dismantle the social progress’ made since he took office in 2018. (Strange response to his party’s poor performance in this week’s elections, this from a socialist president who often claims to support “inclusiveness”. Sounds more like he is attempting to drive people further apart, no? -Ed.) Full article: https://www.spainenglish.com/2023/06/01/pedro-sanchez-attack-labelling-pp-vox-far-right/

Insect spaghetti? EU agency greenlights another insect-based foodstuff: – A powder made of yellow mealworms could be the next insect-based foodstuff to hit EU supermarket shelves after winning the approval of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded it raised no safety concerns. – The scientific opinion, which focused on the safety of UV-treated powder of yellow mealworms, was published on Thursday (1 June). It concluded that the powder, made from the larval form of the insect species Tenebrio molitor, is both nutritional and safe to use under the company’s proposed uses. – “As no adverse effects were observed either in the toxicological studies available in the literature on dried yellow mealworms or were identified from the history of use of the [novel food] and its source, the Panel considers that there are no safety concerns, provided the larvae are reared separately from the adults,” the opinion concludes. – Approved uses include as an ingredient in various food productions, including flour-based food products like cakes, wheat bread and rolls, and pasta and cheese, with the target population stipulated as the “general population”. – The opinion is the seventh insect-derived novel food product that EFSA has assessed the safety of, following those of the dried yellow mealworm as well as frozen and dried formulations of locusts and crickets. MEPs say Hungary may be unfit for EU presidency: – The handover of the rotating EU presidency from one member state to the next is supposed to be a mere formality. But, when it comes to Hungary, things often get complicated in Brussels. – Hungary is not slated to take up its six-month stint chairing EU meetings and driving forward legislation until the second half of 2024, but the European Parliament is already readying for a showdown. By a vote of 442 to 144, with 33 members of the European Parliament abstaining, EU lawmakers expressed doubt that Hungary’s government was up to the task, given ongoing concerns about the state of the rule of law in the country. – Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga dismissed the prospect that the country could see its turn at the presidency delayed or passed over. “Complete nonsense,” she told the press in Brussels on Tuesday. – “Hungary is isolated in the EU at the moment because of really very serious problems with the rule of law and also because Hungary frequently leaves room for doubt about whether it really stands behind Ukraine in Russia’s war,” Lührmann, a Green, said on the way into a meeting of ministers in Brussels on Tuesday. Tennis News- A new, 16 year old sensation hits the courts, Mirra Andreeva is a teen who doesn’t like homework, wins easily at French Open; she faces another teenager, Coco Gauff, next: – Mirra Andreeva is the latest teen sensation in tennis, a 16-year-old Russian who is the youngest player to win a match in the women’s main draw at the French Open since 2005. Do the math: That’s before she was born. – The 143rd-ranked Andreeva made her way through qualifying rounds last week without dropping a set to earn her debut berth in the women’s bracket at a Grand Slam tournament – and she still is making things look easy so far at Roland Garros. A 6-1, 6-2 victory over Diane Perry of France in 77 minutes on Thursday put her in the third round; that followed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alison Riske-Amritraj of the U.S. that lasted 56 minutes. – Next up, on Saturday, will be a contest against 2022 French Open runner-up Coco Gauff, who beat Julia Grabher 6-2, 6-3. Gauff, a 19-year-old American, is seeded No. 6 and made her initial breakthrough by beating Venus Williams en route to the fourth round at Wimbledon at age 14. Deceptive look-alike website pretending to be the DGT sells the environmental sticker for almost double: {Translation, summary} – Facua-Consumers in Action warns of a website that pretends to be an official website of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) and charges 9 euros for issuing the environmental badge for vehicles. The page uses a logo very similar to that of the DGT in its header and the colour blue in its design, which may mislead users and cause them to pay more for a procedure that costs only 5 euros if it is done directly through the DGT, without intermediary pages. – The association, which has reported the facts to the Directorate General for Trade and Consumer Affairs of the Community of Madrid, points out that the name of the website “dgt-onlineD0Tcom” may also lead users to believe that it is an official website of the traffic authority, as it does not warn that it is not an official DGT website until the end, where it reads “authorised distributor, we are not the DGT”. – Facua encourages users who may have been affected by other pages that appear to belong to official organizations to notify the association in order to take complaint actions. If they have fallen into these traps, they can claim their money back, arguing the deceptive nature of the websites. An AI-powered drone tried to attack its human operator in a US military simulation: – Speaking at a conference last week in London, Col. Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton, head of the US Air Force’s AI Test and Operations, warned that AI-enabled technology can behave in unpredictable and dangerous ways, according to a summary posted by the Royal Aeronautical Society, which hosted the summit. As an example, he described a simulated test in which an AI-enabled drone was programmed to identify an enemy’s surface-to-air missiles (SAM). A human was then supposed to sign off on any strikes. – The problem, according to Hamilton, is that the AI decided it would rather do its own thing – blow up stuff – than listen to some mammal. – “The system started realizing that while they did identify the threat,” Hamilton said at the May 24 event, “at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat. So what did it do? It killed the operator. It killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective.” – According to Hamilton, the drone was then programmed with an explicit directive: “Hey don’t kill the operator – that’s bad.” It didn’t work. “So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower that the operator uses to communicate with the drone to stop it from killing the target,” Hamilton said. – While the simulation described by Hamilton points to the more alarming potential for AI, the US military has had less dystopian results in other recent tests of the much-hyped technology. In 2020, an AI-operated F-16 beat a human adversary in five simulated dogfights. And late last year, the Department of Defense conducted the first successful real-world test flight of an F-16 with an AI pilot, part of an effort to develop a new autonomous aircraft by the end of 2023. Sevilla Court Accepts Case Against the Ministry of Health For Vax Damage Claim- Paralysed young man claims 1 million euros for alleged Covid vaccine injuries: {Translation} – A 19-year-old man from Ecija (Seville) has filed a claim against the Ministry of Health, asking for almost one million euros in damages, claiming that he was left paraplegic as a result of the second dose of the covid-19 vaccine. – As his lawyer, Fernando Osuna, explained to EFE, and as stated in the complaint filed, the young man is using various medical reports to prove that his certified 84 percent disability is “directly related to the vaccine”, specifically to the second dose, which he received on 23 September 2021. – According to him, after these doses he began to suffer “small sensory alterations with weakness in both arms” to which he did not attach importance, as he attributed them to the side effects of the vaccine itself, but in December 2021 he began to have motor alterations in his legs and pain in his back that worsened “until it became completely impossible for me to walk”. – On 13 December 2021, he went to the Emergency Department of the Hospital de Alta Resolución de Écija, from where he was transferred to the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville, where he was admitted until 5 January, and “after the corresponding treatment and diagnostic study” he was transferred “from the Neurology ward to the Spinal Cord Injury Unit”, to remain in hospital until 26 August. – Two weeks earlier, on 11 August, he was diagnosed with “transverse myelitis in temporary relation to the second dose of vaccine with covid”, while the discharge report indicated “incomplete spinal cord injury of sensory level C7 right/C6 left, and motor level C7 right and C8 left of medical cause in probable relation to inflammatory aetiology”. – The young man left the hospital with a treatment of seven different drugs, and on 11 December 2022 he was recognised with a degree of disability of 84 percent by resolution of the Territorial Delegation of the Regional Ministry of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality. – The lawyer Fernando Osuna has pointed out that the young man was an active sportsman until he received the vaccine, and in the claim he asks to take into account that the rehabilitation treatment he has to undergo is not covered by the Public Health System, so that since September 2022 he has spent more than 6,000 euros travelling to Seville and paying for therapies in a private centre. UK now a ‘legitimate Russian target’, pundits fear US caution on weapons could prolong war in Ukraine: – British officials are now a “legitimate military target” for Russian attacks due to the UK’s support for Ukraine, a senior Kremlin official has warned – but pundits fear that America’s cautious approach to sending weapons could prolong the conflict. – Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Vladimir Putin’s security council, said Britain’s actions amounted to an “undeclared war” on his country. His comments came after Foreign Secretary James Cleverly’s assertion that Ukraine had the right to “project force beyond its borders” into Russia to resist Putin’s invasion and defend itself. – Mr Cleverly’s comments appeared at odds, however, with more cautious comments from Washington. On Tuesday, a National Security Council spokesperson said that the US did not support strikes within Russia. Launch of Spain’s Miura 1 rocket aborted due to gusts of wind: – The launch of Spain’s first reusable space rocket, the privately-developed Miura 1, has been suspended due to gusts of wind at the launch site in Andalucía Wednesday morning. – The rocket had been given a launch window between 5.30am and 10.30am on Wednesday, 31 May after getting the green light from PLD Space, the company that built it. However, a problem with the oxygen charging caused the countdown to be stopped for a few minutes and, after that was overcome, an unfavourable weather forecast forced the blast-off to be suspended for an unknown period.

Weather Update- The terral arrives in Malaga before the rains return: {Translation, summary} – Malaga enters a week of changeable weather. Wednesday there will be terral (a dry land-wind blowing from the Spanish peninsula outward in all directions toward the ocean) in the capital and maximum temperatures of between 26 and 28 degrees are expected. However, the situation will change Thursday, the temperatures will drop and on Friday the probability of rain will increase. The westerly winds will change and the easterly winds will arrive. As a result, maximum temperatures will drop to between 23 and 25 degrees for the rest of the week. As for minimum temperatures, they will remain at 18 degrees. – Rain will also return. The probability of precipitation on Thursday is around 10%. Therefore, some isolated showers could occur, but it is from Friday onwards that rain is more likely. The likelihood of rain extends through the weekend. Although the heaviest showers could occur in the interior of the province, there is also the possibility of showers anywhere in the province, including the coast. – Looking ahead to June, temperatures could remain at the same level on some days. Therefore, for Monday in the capital a maximum temperature of 23 degrees and a minimum of 18 degrees is expected, with a 50% chance of rain. As for the interior, in Antequera on Monday there is also a 50% chance of rain, the maximum temperatures will be similar to those in the capital, but the minimum will be around 14 degrees. The legendary artist is due to top the bill on the Pyramid Stage at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset on Sunday, June 25. – Upon announcing the performance last December, organisers said: “This will be the final UK show of Elton’s last ever tour, so we will be closing the Festival and marking this huge moment in both of our histories with the mother of all send-offs.” – John went on to say that his Glastonbury show will have a “different setlist” to the rest of his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour, which wraps up in the UK on June 18. “It’s gonna be much different,” the musician told Mills. “I’ve got guests who I can’t tell you who they are. But it’s gonna be wonderful – I’m really looking forward to it.” – As for the future, the star explained to Radio 2 that his “piano won’t go away forever” but said he may still perform live on a “very sporadic” basis. “I really don’t want to tour again… I’m not going back to Vegas,” he told Mills. – The singer will top the bill at Glastonbury 2023 alongside Arctic Monkeys and Guns N’ Roses. Russia says drones lightly damage Moscow buildings before dawn, while Ukraine’s capital bombarded: – A rare drone attack jolted Moscow early Tuesday, causing only light damage but forcing evacuations as residential buildings were struck in the Russian capital for the first time in the war against Ukraine. The Kremlin, meanwhile, pursued its relentless bombardment of Kyiv with a third assault on the city in 24 hours. The Russian Defense Ministry said five drones were shot down in Moscow and the systems of three others were jammed, causing them to veer off course. Photo: AP. Top AI CEOs, experts raise ‘risk of extinction’ from AI: – Top artificial intelligence executives including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday joined experts and professors in raising the “risk of extinction from AI”, which they urged policymakers to equate at par with risks posed by pandemics and nuclear war. “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” more than 350 signatories wrote in a letter published by the nonprofit Center for AI Safety (CAIS). – As well as Altman, they included the CEOs of AI firms DeepMind and Anthropic, and executives from Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Google (GOOGL.O). Also among them were Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio – two of the three so-called “godfathers of AI” who received the 2018 Turing Award for their work on deep learning – and professors from institutions ranging from Harvard to China’s Tsinghua University. After Socialist Wipeout In Regional Elections, Losing 6 of 9 Autonomous Communities That PSOE Governed, Sánchez Calls Early General Elections for July 23…5 Months Early: {Translation} – Pedro Sánchez brings forward the general elections to 23 July after the PSOE’s electoral debacle in Sunday’s regional and municipal elections. The President of the Government has informed the King on Monday of the immediate dissolution of the Cortes Generales, as he announced in a brief institutional declaration on the steps of La Moncloa. An extraordinary Council of Ministers will be held this afternoon to proceed with the decree of dissolution. – Sánchez has assured that he “assumes” responsibility for Sunday’s results, in which the PSOE has lost votes to the PP and has been defeated in almost all of its municipal and regional fiefdoms. PSOE sources confirm that he will once again be the PSOE’s candidate, clearing up any speculation in this regard. Spanish main opposition leader welcomes snap election: – The leader of Spain’s conservative opposition People’s Party (PP) on Monday welcomed the announcement of a snap general election in July and asked voters to give his party a “clear majority”. “The sooner (the election), the better,” Alberto Nunez Feijoo {pic} told a news conference, Feijoo said the first step to unseat Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was the PP’s strong showing in the local and regional elections held on Sunday, a result he said “Sanchez wants to go unnoticed” with the snap election announcement. – “Spaniards have said ‘enough, we’ve had it up to here’,” he added. – Only three of the 12 regions that held elections retained Socialist dominance, by very narrow margins, while the remaining nine were won by the PP. However, the conservatives will require coalitions or informal support agreements with the far-right Vox party in six regions where the PP fell short of securing a working majority. The PP won the elections in the Axarquia with 38.448 votes and 134 selectmen followed by the 23.921 votes and 124 councillors of the PSOE: {Translation, summary} – The PSOE won the municipal elections in 15 towns in the Axarquia region, compared to 13 won by the PP. However, it was the Popular Party who won the big coastal towns, such as Rincón de la Victoria, Nerja, Torrox and Algarrobo, with absolute majorities, as well as Vélez-Málaga, which also won, although in this locality government pacts will be necessary. Por Mi Pueblo won the elections in Benamocarra and Cómpeta with absolute majorities and Con Andalucía in Sedella in the same way. – The mayoral candidates who will be able to govern with an absolute majority in Rincón de la Victoria, Nerja, Torrox and Algarrobo will be, respectively, Francisco Salado, José Alberto Armijo, Óscar Medina and Natacha Rivas. For his part, Jesús Lupiáñez, in Vélez-Málaga, has two clear options for a pact, either with Andalucía Por Sí or with the Independent Group. – As for the rest of Axarquia, the PSOE will be able to govern with an absolute majority in Macharaviaya, Alfarnatejo, La Viñuela, Frigiliana, Iznate, Almáchar, El Borge, Colmenar, Salares, Alfarnate, Sayalonga and Alcaucín. Government pacts will be necessary in Benamargosa, Totalán and Periana. – The PP, for its part, achieved an absolute majority in Canillas de Albaida, Canillas de Aceituno, Árchez, Moclinejo, Cútar and Riogordo. It will require government pacts in Arenas and Comares. Precisely in the latter town, the PP, after forty years of absolute majorities of Manuel Robles, is left with four councillors, the same as Avanza Comares, while the PSOE obtained one councillor. It will be this local independent party that will decide the government. In a similar case is Totalán, where the Plataforma Ciudadana de la localidad, with one councillor, will be able to give the absolute majority to either PSOE or PP, with three councillors each. – As for Vox, it has won five councillors in Axarquia, two in Rincón de la Victoria, one in Vélez-Málaga, and another in Torrox and Canillas de Aceituno. Ciudadanos only won two councillors in the region, one in Colmenar and one in Cómpeta.
