– A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck northeast of Alhendín in Granada province at 01:04 on Saturday, after initially being reported as 4.8. Ukraine launches one of its largest aerial attacks of the war, Russia retaliates:
– Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday, killing at least six people in one of Kyiv’s largest aerial attacks of the war. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it had destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones overnight. Some 600 drones were detected headed toward the Russian capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said, with a third of those destroyed over the Moscow region itself.

Met Office warns another heatwave could hit UK in September after sweltering 38C temperatures:
– Another heatwave could be on the horizon, the Met Office has predicted, as the UK reels from a month of unprecedented hot and dry conditions.
– Temperatures are expected to finally come down next week after the fifth heatwave brought the hottest day of the year so far, with provisional peaks of 38.1C. But the Met Office has warned there is a chance of a late-season heatwave developing in the south as the UK moves into the meteorological autumn.
– According to the forecaster’s long-term forecast for 30 August to 13 September, “there is a chance that late-season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south.”

Astronomers Baffled by 3 Feeding Supermassive Black Holes Packed Into Early Galaxy When the Universe Was Barely a Billion Years Old:
– Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope say that a super distant galaxy appears to contain not one growing black hole, but three– all actively feeding on surrounding matter. Two sit remarkably close together near the galaxy’s center. A third lurks farther out, with an uncertain past and an even less certain future.
– The light from the galaxy in question, known as J0148-4214, has traveled for roughly 12.5 billion years, meaning astronomers see the galaxy as it existed only about 1.15 billion years after the Big Bang. The three black holes range from roughly 600,000 to 80 million times the mass of the Sun. If the interpretation holds, this is the earliest known example of three actively accreting black holes packed into one galactic system. The Nile virus advances in Andalusia: 38 confirmed infections and 24 municipalities on alert: {Trans, summary}
– Four new cases raise to 38 the number of cases of human infections of West Nile virus fever in Andalusia, of which eleven are serious and have led to neuroinvasive diseases. All of them are found in the province of Seville but the presence of the virus detected in mosquito monitoring plans extends the alert to other territories. Thus, there are already 24 municipalities at risk and new locations have been incorporated in Almería and Cádiz.
– The latest four cases detected of the nile virus fever are located in Seville capital, Bollullos de la Mitación, Olivares and Villamanrique de la Condesa.
– Currently, there are 24 Andalusian municipalities with declaration of area on alert distributed throughout the provinces of Seville, Granada, Jaén, Málaga and Cádiz. The latest to join or extend the mandatory period of enforcement in this situation are Algodonales (Cádiz), Las Cabezas de San Juan (Seville), Pulpí (Almería) and Olivares (Seville). Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Beginners: How to Use It Safely {DigameXtra Exclusive, by Naythan}
– Note: This info is for using AI on a computer, or on smartphone via the web-browser. I do not use smartphones, I can’t provide instructions for those wanting to use an AI “app” on their mobiles. Please read the entire article before you begin following instructions.
– AI is here, it is replacing classic web-search websites like Google & DuckDuckGo (DDG), there is really no avoiding it, and it’s not going away anytime soon, so it’s best to learn the basics.
– You do not need to be a computer expert to use an AI website. If you can open a web browser, type a question (known as entering a “prompt” into the “chat-box”) and click a button, you already have the basic skills. The same basic process as using the Google Search website everyone is familiar with.
– I strongly suggest you use a VPN when accessing AI website tools, but it is not required. This is not perfect protection, determined trackers can use other methods to identify you in spite of VPN use, such as “fingerprinting” of your browser to identify your Internet Profile. A VPN will help protect your identity from many common trackers, and reduce targeted ads. The highest degree of security you can expect is by using a VPN and a free, no registration AI combination…not true anonymity, but as close as the average user can get.
– Start with a well-known free AI service. For example, open your browser, click the long white box at the very top of the screen, copy/paste (or type) one of these addresses, then hit ENTER. Or simply click on the provided links below. When you find one you like, bookmark it for future access.

https://chat.deepseek.com/sign_in (Good at digging deeply into subjects, finding “alternative” info, long sessions ok, email reg required)
https://www.perplexity.ai/ (Inconsistant, some days the best, other days almost useless, email reg required)
https://gemini.google.com/app (Has bad rep for going off topic, providing wrong info and hallucinating. Only good for basic tasks. Uses your Google account login)
https://chat.mistral.ai/chat (EU focused, based in France, no reg necessary to begin using, requires email reg after a free test-drive)

-Some AI websites will let you use them immediately with no log-in, others will require a free registration. With registration, when you then sign in with your email, they will usually send a confirmation code number and/or a link to your email for added security. You copy/paste that confirmation number from the email into the box in the AI website; or for some AI services you can click on a link in the email to directly sign-in and open the website. The advantage of registering is that it will save all your chats for future reference, and you get more chat time before hitting your limit. Yes, there are limits to the number of “prompts” you may enter per session, this varies between the different AI services. You can ask the AI you are using to explain how many prompts you are allotted per day, but casual users rarely run out.
– Before beginning, look at the webpage address in the address bar to confirm it is what you typed. If you see a different name, spelling or extra words, do not enter any information and close the page.
– When the correct website is open, look for a “prompt box” near the bottom of the page where you can type a question. Click inside it and try: “Explain how Spanish pensions work in simple English.” Press Enter or click the Send button.
– The AI will answer. If you do not understand the response, simply type “Please explain that more simply.” You can continue asking questions about the same subject, or change to another topic. You can click the “New Chat” box to quit the current chat and open a new chat if you like to keep your chats organized by topic. Chat history is usually posted in the left hand column.
– The more specific the prompt you enter, the more likely you are to get the answer you want. You can also ask AI to translate a letter or summarise a document by pasting it into the prompt box; it can explain something you found online by pasting that web-link into the “prompt box”, followed by a space, then type the question you have. It can help write an email, or make a chart. Some will make you custom photo-like images as per your instructions, be precise! It will also work as a much improved search tool, replacing Google & DDG, and providing better, more accurate results without as many ads or promoted crap. AI is often more useful for answering a question directly.
– Start with simple, harmless questions and experiment. You learn AI in much the same way you learn anything else, by using it. As you get comfortable using it you will develop better ways of asking to get exactly what you want with your improved “prompts”. You can save those “prompts” to a text document for future use.
– There are some important safety rules.
1. Never enter passwords, bank details or other sensitive personal information. You can ask general health-related questions, but never provide identifying medical information, and always verify health information with trusted sources.
2. AI makes mistakes and may confidently give incorrect information, so check anything important against a reliable source. It sometimes “hallucinates” and wanders off topic.
3. Never use AI chat-boxes found on social media websites, messengers or apps. Anything you do enter there should be considered public knowledge, will be added to your “internet profile” forever, and will be used to send you targeted ads.
4. Most AI services have a built-in progressive, Left-wing bias. If you don’t like the approach it takes in a task, correct it and tell it what you want and don’t want. It usually follows that prompt.
– In a future issue I will provide some of the “prompts” I have found most useful.

The minister insists on refusing to appear next week in order to “be able to be precise and exhaustive” in her intervention and have “enough” time to prepare it.

– Astronomers at MIT and elsewhere have spotted an extremely bright red spot in the early universe. The object resembles an enormous star, spanning the size of our solar system. But it also is putting out 100 billion times more energy than any known star can physically produce. In fact, such energies are closer to what a black hole might generate.
– The curious combination suggests that the red spot is an entirely new type of astrophysical source. The astronomers are calling it a “black hole star.”

The object is likely a hugely dense cloud of gas, powered not by standard nuclear fusion, but by a central black hole.

Vélez-Málaga plans a new 4-star hotel in Caleta de Vélez: {Trans}

Almuñécar Fiestas Week: August 12th to 15th
The town will celebrate its Patron Saint Festivities in honour of Our Lady of Antigua Coronada, with more than fifty completely free events and a strong sense of local identity.
The highlight of the evening program will be at the Official Festival Booth, where a lineup of top national artists will be offered with completely free admission:
– Wednesday, August 12 (Senior Citizens’ Day): Laura Gallego and the La Tentación orchestra. 10pm
– Thursday, August 13: Café Quijano 11pm, and the children’s musical K-Pop Warriors, 9pm

On Thursday, August 14, the floral offering will take place, followed at midnight by the solemn greeting and veneration of the image. On Friday, August 15, the patronal mass will be celebrated, and starting at 8:00 p.m., the eagerly awaited maritime-land procession will begin.
– The climactic moment will occur when the Virgin of La Antigua enters the sea and her boat passes the Peñón del Santo (Saint’s Rock). At that instant, “Reflections of a Dream” will begin, a monumental pyromusical display by Pirotecnia Zaragozana. Designed to be the largest pyromusical show in Andalusia, it will unleash more than 850 kilos of gunpowder, using the Castle of San Miguel, the Peñón del Santo, the beach, and the Mediterranean Sea as its simultaneous stage.

Polish tourist dies in swimming pool in Cómpeta:
– A 58-year-old Polish man has died after being found unconscious in the swimming pool of a farmhouse in Cómpeta. The man was found unconscious in the pool on Sunday, 9 August, at a rural property situated near the Camino de Corca, in the area known as Almendralejo, according to information provided by the 112 Andalusian emergency service. The emergency call was received at around 7:50 am.
– The deceased was a Polish tourist who, according to sources close to the investigation speaking to SUR, had arrived at the holiday cottage on Friday for a planned two-week stay in Cómpeta. He was found dead in the swimming pool just two days after arriving in the town.
– The Guardia Civil has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the death. Pending the results of the post-mortem, one of the initial theories suggests that the man may have suffered a heart attack before losing consciousness. – Search-and-rescue operations entered a second day in western Colombia on Tuesday (August 11) as crews raced to find survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings following a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake. Local authorities in several affected regions put the death toll at more than 200, while more than 3,000 people remain listed as missing.
– Rescue workers, soldiers, volunteers and families continued digging through concrete rubble using cranes, excavators and their bare hands. Around 1,600 buildings across the affected region have been reported damaged or collapsed, while nearly 5,000 homes have been damaged.
– The earthquake struck Colombia’s coffee-growing heartland early Monday, with Choco near the epicentre among the worst-affected areas. Roads, electricity, water, healthcare and communications have been disrupted, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach communities in the impoverished and difficult-to-access region.
– Pereira has suffered extensive damage, with entire residential sections reduced to concrete slabs. Volunteers have formed human chains to remove debris as rescuers search for survivors.

Rincón de la Victoria- Gastrolatino Festival: Aug 13 to 16
The event, with free admission, will bring together in Plaza Al-Ándalus a wide range of international gastronomy, entertainment shows, tropical cocktails, food trucks and tributes to great figures of Latin music. The program will begin each afternoon at 6:30 p.m. with background music and children’s activities. Musical performances and entertainment will commence at 8:00 p.m., culminating each day with tribute concerts. On Sunday, August 16, the festival will conclude at midnight after the Carlos Vives tribute.

On August 14, Nerja will be decked out in white to celebrate the 16th edition of the White Party, declared a Festival of Local Tourist Interest. The Left is sinking– PSOE, Sumar & Podemos together do not reach 35% of the votes: {Trans, summary}
– The left is going through one of its worst periods since the Transition. If general elections were held today, the PSOE, Sumar, and Podemos would barely garner 34.6% of the vote, far behind the 52.2% that the PP and Vox would obtain together, according to the NC Report poll for LA RAZÓN.
– The poll depicts a profound shift in the political cycle: for the first time in decades, the progressive movement has not only lost its parliamentary majority, but has also ceased to be competitive against a right wing that has widened its lead to almost 18 points. The decline after eight years in government affects the entire left-wing bloc, albeit with varying degrees of intensity.
– The PSOE remains the main left-wing force, but its share of the vote has fallen to 25.2%, which would translate to between 101 and 103 seats. Compared to the July 2023 general election, the Socialists would lose almost two million votes, 6.5 percentage points, and between 18 and 20 seats. Pedro Sánchez’s party would drop from its current 121 seats to just over 100 if general elections were held in Spain today. The poll also reflects that the PSOE’s problem is no longer solely the loss of electoral support, but the erosion of its own voter base. Only 67.8% of those who voted for Pedro Sánchez in the 2023 general election would vote for him again today.
– However, the real collapse is occurring to the left of the PSOE. Sumar (communist), the experiment created by Yolanda Díaz four years ago to bury Podemos, is plummeting to 5.9% of the vote. It would barely retain between eight and ten seats, compared to the 31 it won on June 23rd. The party would lose more than 1.6 million votes, 6.4 percentage points, and more than twenty seats, becoming the party that has lost the most ground across the entire political spectrum.
– Santiago Abascal’s Vox party surges to 18% of the vote and would win between 61 and 63 seats, practically double its current 33, after gaining nearly 1.2 million new voters. Together with the PP, the two parties would hold around 206-210 seats, well above the absolute majority of 176. Only the PSOE, under Felipe González in 1982, has managed to surpass the 200-seat mark. Women continue to lead access to the Minimum Living Income in Malaga with 73.3% of recipients: {Trans, summary}
– Women are by far the main recipients of Spain’s Minimum Living Income (IMV), accounting for 73.3% of all IMV holders in Málaga, compared with just 26.7% who are men. In July, 27,789 women in Málaga held IMV claims, demonstrating that women receive the benefit more than twice as often as men.

– Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi on Monday demanded that Spain return to Morocco the unaccompanied Moroccan minors who remain in its territory, following the unprecedented migratory surge recently recorded in the Spanish border autonomous city of Ceuta, in North Africa.
– In statements to the Moroccan news portal Hespress, Ouahbi blamed Spanish authorities for the situation of these minors and asserted that Rabat will demand their return through legal and political channels. – A small boat carrying 230 people crossed the English Channel to the UK over the weekend, setting a record for the number of people making the crossing in a single vessel, local media reported Monday. The boat arrived in the UK on Saturday, surpassing the previous record set in July, when 165 people crossed the Channel in a single vessel, the BBC reported. – The Met Office is considering issuing a rare amber or red extreme heat warning ahead of temperatures of 36C or higher this week.
Parts of the country are preparing for their fifth heatwave of the summer as the UK continues to suffer through an unprecedented period of hot, dry weather. Temperatures are set to rise again tomorrow (Wed.) after slightly cooling off today. ‘We’ll probably see highs reaching the mid-30s quite widely on Wednesday, and indeed on Thursday too for England and Wales,’ Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said. People are deliberately setting fire to a Welsh mountain burning so badly it’s now a major incident:
– People are deliberately setting fires on a Rhondda mountain which has been burning for days. Fire crews have been trying to tackle a serious wildfire at Llanwonno since Saturday afternoon which led to a major incident being declared on Monday due to the scale of the fire and the amount of resources being used.
– In a joint-agency message with South Wales Police, SWFRS said that while work is ongoing to prevent further spread and protect nearby properties, there were reports of deliberate fire-setting on the mountain overnight. “The incident remains a major incident due to the ongoing scale of the wildfire and challenging conditions on the mountain, including poor visibility caused by today’s low cloud, mist and rain.”
– The fire service said communities in Ferndale are well protected, with ongoing work looking to protect the Cwmaman side of the mountain while continuing efforts to contain the fire within forestry and upland areas. A number of road closures remain in place in the small village of Blaenllechau to allow the fire service to get equipment to the mountain, with members of the public asked to avoid the area.
– The latest update from the fire service reads: “South Wales Fire and Rescue Service continues to work with partner agencies to contain and extinguish the wildfire on Llanwonno mountain in Ferndale and prevent further spread, helping to protect nearby properties and communities. “There were reports of deliberate fire-setting on the mountain last night. Netanyahu rejects US-led Gaza plan:
– Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday rejected a US-led Gaza plan endorsed by Hamas, putting distance between himself and US President Donald Trump as he tries to shore up his base ahead of close elections.
– After more than a week of gradually escalating criticism of the plan, and despite receiving assurances that Israel would not need to start withdrawing in Gaza immediately, Netanyahu explicitly opposed the deal following pushback from his right-wing allies.
“Israel rejects the 15-point document,” Netanyahu said, referring to the plan Hamas agreed to late last month. “They have ideas; some of them are acceptable to us and some are not, and we know how to stand our ground on these matters,” he said.

FACUA warns of the withdrawal of 6 models of eclipse glasses due to risk of eye injury: {Trans, summary}
– FACUA-Consumers in Action has warned that consumer protection authorities have ordered the withdrawal of six models of glasses for the solar eclipse due to the risk of eye injury.
– These are products from the brands Lionstar, ECP Eye Care Professional, Pelispan, Homanaje, Orro and Opticalia whose “irregularities” have been detected by the consumer administrations.
– “The six models of glasses share the same irregularities detected by consumer organizations, which can occur in many other products that have been marketed or given away in recent months,” the organization warned. The risk description indicated in all market withdrawal and sales ban orders is as follows: “The user puts on the glasses to observe the solar eclipse. Because the filter is below the minimum transmittance (excessively dark), the user only sees total darkness and cannot locate the solar disk.”
– As a predictable reaction, and facing the sun, the user slides their glasses up their forehead, tilts them, or removes them momentarily to adjust their position in the sun, intending to put them back on immediately. During this unprotected interval, the eyes are directly exposed to solar radiation (visible and infrared/ultraviolet radiation). This causes chemical or thermal damage to the foveal cells of the retina. – A voice assistant such as Alexa can offer older people a simple, accessible way to remain independent and connected at home. Because it responds to spoken questions, it avoids difficulties associated with small screens, keyboards, menus and buttons, making it useful for seniors who find conventional technology intimidating or difficult to operate.
– The device can provide practical help, including weather forecasts, recipes, exercise suggestions, music and answers to questions including spelling help. It can also support communication with family members through video calls utilising a mobile, tablet, laptop or PC. For people whose relatives live elsewhere, a larger screen can make conversations easier than using a mobile phone, allowing them to see faces and expressions as well as hear voices.
– The assistant can also provide a reassuring sense of company for someone living alone. Users may develop a familiar routine of speaking to it throughout the day, helping reduce feelings of isolation. However, the device is presented as a supplement to human contact, not a replacement for it. Proper installation, internet access, instruction and technical support are important to ensure seniors can use it confidently and safely.
– The device is not simply handed over and left to the user. Technicians and volunteers visit the home to install it, explain how it works and leave a manual. If the person does not have internet, they also provide a connection to the network. If something goes wrong while the device is being used, they can contact the Red Cross, which will either get in touch with them or visit their home. Practical workshops are also organised to answer questions and help users learn how to operate the device. The WHO again warns about the spread of Ebola in Congo– “70% of infected people are dying in their homes”:
– The WHO has made this revelation about an outbreak that continues to grow and, still, has no end in sight.
– The Ebola virus began circulating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) last February, four months before the epidemic was declared on May 15, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Monday. “Genetic studies by Professor Ahuka (Steve Mundeke Ahuka, epidemic response coordinator at the Congolese National Institute of Public Health) revealed that the virus began circulating in February, but the outbreak was officially declared on May 15 ,” said Mohamed Yakub Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa, at a press conference in Bunia.
– This means that the fight against Ebola is “four months behind” and that the virus is “ahead” of the response, Janabi added from the capital of the eastern province of Ituri, the epicenter of the outbreak. Adding to this situation are factors such as the fact that the rate of spread is “greater” than that of other epidemics, that the outbreak has reached neighbouring Uganda, that there are no official vaccines or treatments for this strain, and that it is occurring amidst insecurity in eastern Congo due to the conflict between rebel groups and the army.
– Around 70% of people are dying at home, warned the senior WHO official, who called for greater public involvement in the Ebola response. “Seventy percent of people are dying in their communities, which means we are not seeing two-thirds of those who are ill and many Ebola deaths go uncounted. After months of the outbreak, we must reassess our strategy: Why aren’t people going to hospitals? Why hasn’t awareness about Ebola reached the people as we expected?” he lamented.
– The current epidemic is already the second largest outbreak in recorded history and the largest in terms of infections in the DRC, surpassing the one that also occurred in eastern Congo between 2018 and 2020, which caused 2,299 deaths and 3,481 cases. This is the seventeenth epidemic to affect the DRC and has the fastest growth rate of infections compared to any other outbreak since its declaration, according to the WHO. Andalusia reports 26 cases of West Nile virus after detecting five new ones in the province of Seville, 20 municipalities now on alert: {Trans, summary}
– The Andalusian Regional Ministry of the Presidency, Health, and Emergencies has confirmed five new cases of West Nile Fever in the region, bringing the total number of cases diagnosed this season to 26. – Of the 26 cases registered, one has recovered, one has died, and 24 are provisionally considered positive. Furthermore, 19 were mild cases, while seven involved neuroinvasive disease.

– Third, look at the jobs churn. In twelve months, Spain signed 16 million contracts to add just 642,562 net affiliations. That’s 25 contracts for every single new affiliate created. Do the math: that means the system cycles through hiring and firing at a dizzying pace – the equivalent of a new contract every two weeks for each net affiliate added. This isn’t stability – it’s a revolving door.
– Fourth, the monthly average hides the collapse. The government touts the average affiliation number for July as a record. But what they don’t tell you is that on the last day of the month, 246,945 affiliations were cancelled – a massive single-day drop! By month’s end, there were 26,710 fewer affiliations than when July began. The “record” is just a statistical mirage created by averaging a strong start with a disastrous finish. {Imagine a restaurant that has 100 customers per day for the first 30 days of the month. On day 31, only 10 customers show up. You could still claim “we averaged 97 customers per day – a record!” But that hides the collapse on the final day. That’s exactly what the government is doing. -Ed.}
– Meanwhile, 65% of new affiliations come from low-wage immigrant labor, while domestic employment shrinks– the government points to total affiliation growth (boosted by migrants) to claim success, while ignoring that Spanish affiliation is actually shrinking.

Landfill is becoming the default graveyard for the fading renewable-energy green dream:
– Millions of solar panels are already hitting their end-of-life cycle, and the world is completely unprepared for the toxic avalanche due in 2030. By 2050, the International Renewable Energy Agency says it will get much worse, with more than 200 million tonnes of cumulative solar panel waste globally. Plus, there will be additional tens of millions of tonnes of decommissioned wind turbine components. Turbine blades are virtually indestructible.
– The industry has claimed solar panels and turbines were ‘95% recyclable’. Technically, they are—because they are made of glass, aluminium, and copper. But the reality is a different story. In the US, it costs roughly $20 to $30 to properly disassemble and recycle a single panel, compared to just $1 to $5 to dump it in a landfill.
– Because there is little financial incentive to disassemble and recycle parts, around 90% of decommissioned panels in the US and a large share of turbine blades worldwide go straight into the ground.
– These devices are highly complex. A solar panel is an industrial ‘sandwich’ bound tightly by heavy polymers. Extracting the microscopic amounts of valuable silver and high-purity silicon requires energy-intensive chemical and thermal processing. When crushed or left to fracture in landfills, heavy metals like lead and cadmium leach into surrounding soil and groundwater, turning ‘clean energy’ into a multi-generational hazardous waste problem.
– The crisis is accelerating faster than models ever predicted. As solar cells degrade and newer, cheaper panels hit the market, consumers and solar farms are ripping out functional systems a decade early to repower and upgrade.
– The dream of renewable energy from sunlight and wind has, in reality, created an endless loop of unrecyclable industrial trash.

– Italy placed all its major cities under the highest heat alert Thursday as a blistering heat wave gripped Europe, setting a national temperature record in Austria, fueling wildfires in France and disrupting energy and transport systems across the continent.
The extreme weather has pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in several countries, prompting health warnings for millions of people.
– Italy’s Health Ministry placed all 27 cities monitored under its national heat surveillance system on red alert Thursday — the first time this year that the entire network has been under the highest warning level simultaneously.
– Later on Thursday, Slovakia recorded another all-time high temperature. The new record set at Dolne Plachtince in the south was 42.2 C (108 F), the Slovak Meteorological Institute said. In Slovakia, the low levels of water in the Danube forced the country’s biggest hydroelectric power plant in Gabčíkovo to shut down seven of its eight turbines, the TASR news agency said.
– An all-time high temperature of 41.2 C (106.2 F) was also recorded in Austria on Wednesday in the village of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg near the Slovak border, according to GeoSphere Austria.

Every body of water in England polluted with toxic chemicals, report shows– Just 14 per cent of England’s rivers, lakes, and coastal waters are in good ecological health:
– A stark new assessment has revealed that a mere 14 per cent of England’s rivers, lakes, and coastal waters are currently in good ecological health. The findings come from the Environment Agency’s first update in six years, conducted under retained EU legislation governing water quality.
– This comprehensive evaluation scrutinised 4,658 of the country’s rivers, lakes, estuaries, canals, and coastal waters, measuring their health against a range of standards including wildlife populations, overall water quality, and the condition of physical habitats. The report indicates that just 14.3 per cent of surface water bodies achieved an overall good ecological status in 2025, with widespread issues attributed to sewage spills, agricultural nutrient runoff, and pollutants emanating from urban areas and roads, such as litter, petrol, and garden pesticides.
– Alarmingly, only 15 per cent of rivers meet or exceed good ecological status, according to the figures. They also reveal England’s water bodies are falling far short of the government target to restore 75 per cent to good ecological status by 2027.

US Senate panel votes to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress:
– A U.S. Senate committee voted on Thursday to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress after the former top U.S. infectious ​disease official refused to answer questions about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
– The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved a referral pushed by its ‌Republican Chair Rand Paul of Kentucky, a longtime Fauci antagonist, on a party-line vote of 8-7. – Fails at basic tasks: Gemini often struggles with simple commands like setting alarms or timers, frequently requiring lengthy, multi-prompt conversations to complete actions that Assistant did instantly.

We won’t eliminate cash, but we can add controls: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Tax Agency (aka Agencia Tributaria or Hacienda) has tightened its monitoring of cash transactions, requiring banks to automatically report any deposits or withdrawals above €3,000. Transactions involving €500 bills must also be reported regardless of the amount. While these reports are standard anti-fraud measures, they can prompt Hacienda to request proof of the money’s origin.
– Moving more than €100,000 in cash within Spain requires submitting Form S1, and crossing Spanish borders with €10,000 or more also needs to be declared. Failure to do so carries heavy fines of up to 150% of the amount in question. For a €100,000 movement, that could mean a €150,000 penalty.
– In more serious cases involving deliberate concealment or an inability to justify the funds, the sanctions can be even more severe. Hacienda advises everyone to keep proper documentation for any significant cash transactions and to be aware that routine banking activity above these thresholds may attract scrutiny. The goal, it notes, is to close loopholes used for tax evasion and money laundering, not to penalize ordinary citizens making legitimate transactions.
