Benamocarra’s traditional ‘Candlemas Night’: Fri, 11 Sept, in the Plaza del Calvario

– The coincidence between the new call and the Moroccan electoral context is causing concern among analysts. The issue of Ceuta and Melilla is frequently used as a tool for nationalist mobilisation, providing a means of increasing visibility and political tension.
– 20 September has become the central date of the campaign, but messages are also circulating about 23 September, the day of the legislative elections, describing it as a “sensitive” date. Some profiles suggest that the police deployment at polling stations could reduce surveillance in areas close to the border, creating a window of opportunity for further mass movements. – Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has defended the actions of Spain’s security forces during the mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta on 30 and 31 July, saying they did the “sensible thing” by allowing people to enter the autonomous city, in contrast to the position of the People’s Party (PP), which argued that force should have been used to stop them.
– In an interview with La 1, reported by Europa Press, Sánchez described as “utterly outrageous” comments by PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo that, had he been prime minister, he would have invoked Article 8 of the Spanish Constitution in a similar situation. Sánchez said that, by doing so, Feijóo had suggested an “armed response” to the “avalanche” of arrivals.
– “What would another government have done? Would it have started shooting at these young people, minors, boys and girls? Or was it not more sensible to allow them to enter and then for 90 per cent of them to leave the autonomous city in the following hours or days?” the prime minister asked. He also stressed that another 4,500 people had left voluntarily since 10 August.
– Sánchez said it was “extremely serious” that Feijóo had stated that he would be willing to take “nothing less than a decision of that magnitude”. In his view, such a response would have resulted in “an even greater crisis, not only in Ceuta but also in our bilateral relations with Morocco, and certainly a rather lamentable international image”. For that reason, he said he considered the response of the security forces to have been “sensible”. “I obviously support it,” he added.
SÁNCHEZ DEFENDS HIS “RIGHT TO REST”
– Asked whether he and his government had engaged in any self-criticism over their handling of the crisis, including whether he had been wrong to go on holiday, Sánchez once again pointed to the fact that he had been the head of government to visit the autonomous city more often than any other prime minister, as well as defending his “right to rest” like any other worker.
– Nevertheless, he said he had continued working throughout August and remained “at the forefront” of the response, insisting that the government had acted “from the very first minute”. He again rejected claims that there had been any prior report warning of the possibility of a mass arrival, beyond a “spike” in the number of people arriving by sea in the days beforehand.
– Regarding self-criticism, Sánchez acknowledged that the government needed to “improve” its preparations for “hybrid attacks of this nature”, as well as strengthening Ceuta and Melilla’s preparedness in response to the reality of the inequality of opportunities on the other side of the border.
– He also acknowledged the need for improvements in “anticipation and prevention”, including having sufficiently sophisticated intelligence capabilities to identify through the digital environment how major movements of people such as those seen on 30 and 31 July could develop.

– Andalusia’s Education Department has cancelled the allocation of posts to thousands of temporary teachers just 48 hours before they were due to report for work, after detecting technical problems in the Sipri recruitment system. Teachers had received their placements on 7 September and were preparing to start when the administration announced that the allocation had been invalidated and would be corrected.
– The disruption has created considerable uncertainty for temporary teachers, who can be told at extremely short notice where they will work, sometimes hundreds of kilometres from home. The Vuelta arrives in Malaga on Friday: this is the route and schedules for stage 19: {Trans, summary}

After three flat stages and the Jerez time trial, the Spanish race will meet again with a new summit finish in the province, the 1st category pass of Los Reales-Peñas Blancas. Controversy in Torrox- The PSOE denounces that the PP is using the El Morche motorway exit as a weapon of confrontation: {Trans, summary}
– The Socialist PSOE accuses Óscar Medina’s government of using a demand from the residents of El Morche as a smokescreen and call for work, proposals, and solutions in the face of insults and political confrontation.
– The Socialist Municipal Group of Torrox has denounced, after the ordinary plenary session held this Monday, September 7, the lack of initiative of the PP led government which, after almost twelve years of absolute majority, continues without offering solutions to important problems of the municipality such as the need for a second exit from the highway or an alternative road to the N-340. The Socialist spokesperson regretted that the PP had used its time in the plenary session to talk about national politics, attack the Government of Spain and insult the Socialist spokesperson, “without dedicating practically a word to the need to have that second exit of the highway and even a third as established by the PGOU of the municipality of Torrox.”
– The PSOE reiterated its support for improving accessibility to this area and recalled that its spokesperson, Mari Nieves Ramírez, had already submitted a proposal in 2023 to move forward with a new connection to the highway. Forest fire in Cútar extinguished after affecting two hectares of scrubland: {Trans}
– The forest fire that broke out in the municipality of Cútar has been completely extinguished after affecting about 2 hectares of scrubland, according to information provided by the Infoca Plan team.
– The fire started early Tuesday afternoon in the Lomas de Cútar area and was stabilized at 5:45 p.m., subsequently being brought under control at 7:05 p.m. From that moment, firefighters continued working in the area until it was completely extinguished.
– The operation involved two light helicopters, one heavy helicopter, and two water bombers, in addition to 23 forest firefighters, a BRIF (Forest Fire Intervention Brigade), two operations technicians, two environmental agents, and one fire engine. Once the fire was stabilized, the deployment was reduced to 18 forest firefighters, two environmental agents, and two fire engines, focused on mop-up and final extinguishing operations.
– The rapid intervention of the operation made it possible to contain the advance of the flames in a few hours, preventing greater damage to the forest environment of the municipality. – Alhaurin de la Torre has approved a €10.8 million shopping centre on Avenida Santa Clara, in the eastern part of the town’s urban expansion. The new facility will be anchored by a Carrefour hypermarket occupying around 4,900 square metres on the ground floor. The project will also include around a dozen additional commercial units, a mezzanine and two underground parking levels.
– The development will occupy 13,887 square metres of consolidated urban land classified for commercial use. Its underground car park will provide approximately 400 spaces, including 13 spaces for electric vehicles. The municipality has set a maximum three-year period for completion, although Mayor Joaquin Villanova expects construction to finish considerably sooner. Work must begin within one year.

Declassified Ceuta Files Reveal Foreigners’ Intelligence Unit Issued Multiple Warnings Before Ceuta Mass Entry – Immigration officials were warned days before the invasion of a “consolidated and priority” threat: {Trans, summary}
– The declassified documents show that the Foreigners’ Intelligence Unit of the National Police’s Foreigners and Borders Directorate (CENIF) issued several warnings before the mass entry into Ceuta on 30 July.
– A 28 July CENIF report recorded that more than 600 people had entered on 26 July after a violent assault on the fence, which injured more than 20 Guardia Civil officers. The unit identified a possible pattern linking increased mass crossings in late July with Morocco’s Throne Day. It cited three possible factors: temporary relaxation of Moroccan border controls, intended political pressure on Spain and the EU, and migrants’ awareness of this permissiveness. Good weather was also expected to increase attempts through the border breakwaters. CENIF considered maritime entry the highest-risk route, while not ruling out a combined land and sea operation.
– A 29 July CENIF report assessed the probability of a mass assault as “very high”, citing 921 swimming crossings between 1 and 28 July and calling the threat “consolidated and priority”. Other CENIF reports recorded more than 1,200 entries following the Supreme Court ruling restricting immediate returns, whose effects could continue indefinitely.
– One day before the mass entry, CENIF warned of potential irregular entries into both Ceuta and Melilla on 30 July, assessing an “extreme” risk of collapse from coordinated swimming and fence crossings. It also reported internal migrant communications organising mass entries and increased social media activity concerning wetsuits and swimming alerts. Afterwards, CENIF warned of attempts to reach mainland Spain by concealing migrants in vehicles and called for thorough inspections of cars and vessels. The PP claims that newly declassified reports on Ceuta prove Sánchez “lied” and blames him for the assault and the deaths: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s opposition Partido Popular (PP) says newly declassified intelligence reports have exposed serious failures by Pedro Sánchez’s government in the run-up to the mass border crossing into Ceuta on 30 and 31 July.
– The PP’s central accusation is stark: the government was warned, had the information it needed to prepare, and chose not to act. According to the declassified documents, Spain’s National Intelligence Centre (CNI) warned the government and Moroccan intelligence services on 29 July that organised attempts to enter Ceuta were being promoted on social media. The CNI reported two groups with a combined 180,000 followers and warned of a planned assault on the border by both land and sea the following evening.
– Yet, according to PP spokesperson Ester Muñoz, the government failed to reinforce the frontier. She says that on 30 July there were only five Civil Guards and four divers at the fence. The PP consequently accuses Sánchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska of bearing ultimate responsibility for the crisis and the deaths that occurred, arguing that they consciously decided to do nothing despite receiving advance warnings.
– The opposition has also accused the government of misleading the public for weeks. Muñoz points to changing accounts from Sánchez, Grande-Marlaska, Defence Minister Margarita Robles and the government delegation in Ceuta over whether warnings had been received. Particularly damaging, she argues, are CNI WhatsApp messages sent directly to the Ceuta delegation’s office, apparently contradicting its subsequent denial that it had received advance warnings.
– The PP further accuses the government of ignoring an earlier 8 July Guardia Civil request for additional personnel, divers and legislative changes.
– Muñoz describes the alleged conduct as a “manifest and deliberate dereliction of duty”, demands Sánchez’s resignation and calls for elections. She also accuses the government of shielding Morocco while failing to identify those responsible for what she says may have been an organised and planned crisis.

Apple News– Apple unveils $1,999 foldable ‘iPhone Duo’ as new CEO John Ternus takes reins:
– Apple revealed its first-ever foldable iPhone – and a new head honcho to pitch the company’s latest pricey gadget.
– The tech giant’s newly minted chief executive John Ternus unveiled the the iPhone Duo in his first keynote address since replacing Tim Cook as CEO on Sept. 1 – even as Apple looks to reassure Wall Street that it hasn’t lost its ability to wow consumers with cutting-edge devices.
– The Duo will start at $1,999 – an eye-watering markup that was nevertheless slightly lower than analysts had expected – with Apple taking preorders starting Oct. 16. Availability begins Oct. 23, the company said. The priciest version of the Duo, with two terabytes of memory, starts at an eye-popping $3,199.
– Speaking at Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., HQ, Ternus said most foldable phones feel like “two phones awkwardly stuck together.” But the Duo folds out with a crease in its screen that’s effectively invisible. It snaps open and shut with a hinge. When folded, the Duo has an exterior screen covering half of the shell, enabling it to be used like a normal iPhone. The Duo’s inner screen is 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen when folded out. When it’s shut, it’s similar in size to a passport, Apple noted.

– An artificial intelligence researcher who left OpenAI to join Anthropic has decided to leave the industry altogether, accusing both US companies of “playing with our lives” as they race to develop AI systems capable of improving themselves.
– Jacob Coxon, 27, spent the past three years working on the pretraining of AI models, first at OpenAI and then, earlier this year, at Anthropic, which he had regarded as the more cautious of the two companies. Pretraining is the stage in which AI models absorb vast quantities of data in order to develop their capabilities.
– But Coxon said on Tuesday that his experience had convinced him that neither company was acting responsibly. “They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” he said. In a post on X, he added that people building AI “earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade”, stressing that this was “not a marketing stunt”.
– Superintelligence refers to the theoretical point at which an AI system’s capabilities exceed those of humans.
