Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Brussels dismantles snake-oil salesman Sánchez’s distorted employment claims, 82% of the jobs created are low productivity– high levels of employed live in poverty: {Trans, summary}
– Pedro Sanchez continually boasts about employment figures, yet never explains their quality or economic value. A European Commission report dismantles his claims: over 82% of new jobs created in Spain are concentrated in low-productivity service sectors, which limits sustainable wage growth and undermines competitiveness. The report also notes that job quality remains a persistent challenge, with the share of employed people living in poverty stuck at a relatively high level.
– Brussels further criticises the minimum wage policy. Strong minimum wage growth has compressed the salary spectrum around that floor, without notably reducing poverty among workers. Real minimum wage growth since 2020 is just 1.2%, among the EU’s weakest, with forecasts of only 0.6% and 0.1% for 2026 and 2027. Sanchez presents headline employment growth as vindication of his policies, but Brussels exposes the reality: precarious, low-value work that cannot sustain wages or living standards. Inflation will continue to soar! It will rise to 4.9% in September, and will not fall below 4% for the rest of the year according to Funcas: {Trans, summary}
– The National Statistics Institute (INE) has confirmed that prices soared by 4.3% in August. This increase in inflation is expected to continue in the coming months.
– In fact, Funcas is already warning that the current month of September will close with inflation of 4.9%. Furthermore, the think tank warns that, until the end of the year, inflation will remain above 4%. Llarena rejects applying amnesty to Puigdemont for the crime of embezzlement after the CJEU’s endorsement of the law: {Trans, summary}
– Supreme Court Justice Pablo Llarena {pic}, the investigating judge in the Catalan independence trial , has rejected the request from former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and his former minister Toni Comín to be granted amnesty for the crime of misuse of public funds, following the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) ruling that the pardon does not violate EU law.
– Llarena also refused to lift the national arrest warrants against both men, who have been living in Belgium since 2017, although he admitted that this decision is not “irreversible,” which leaves the door open for him to do so if the Spanish Constitutional Court accepts the appeals for protection filed by the pro-independence leaders .
– Llarena’s decision was predictable because, until now, the Supreme Court has refused to grant amnesty for the embezzlement offenses of the pro-independence leaders for two reasons: because the law prohibits pardoning this crime if it affected European economic interests; and because the law also does not allow amnesty for embezzlement if the accused benefited from financial enrichment. The Ministry of Equality to analyze the femicides that occurred in July and August, but not the androcides*: {Trans, summary}
– The Ministry of Equality is holding a new Crisis Committee meeting this Wednesday, September 16, in Seville to analyze the recent femicides in Spain in July and August. Specifically, according to sources within the department headed by Ana Redondo {pic}, the meeting will examine three cases from July and the two that occurred in August. In total, 37 women have allegedly been murdered by their partner or ex-partner in Spain this year.
– Andalusia has recorded 291 women murdered as a result of gender-based violence since 2003, when data collection began. In 2026, the region has had 10 victims, the same number as throughout all of 2024. Meanwhile, 15 women were murdered in 2025.
– * {No mention of the statistics concerning women committing androcides? “Androcide” typically refers to the killing of men because they are male, or the killing of a husband by his wife. It is not a widely adopted social or legal category in the way “femicide” is, but it is the closest equivalent English has to offer, except perhaps the rarely used “Viricide”. “Androcide” carries no comparable political weight like “femicide” does, no body of legislation, and no organised movement behind it. However, as covered in yesterday’s issue, women do murder men. This year in Andalucia there have been 10 femicides, but also at least 3 cases of women murdering men, so it is not insignificant, even if they get diminished press coverage. -Ed}

CEUTA CRISIS

Doctors and nurses in Ceuta call for a strike on September 24: {Trans, summary}
– Health Minister Mónica García {pic} is facing mounting problems. In the face of the Ministry of Health’s “indifference” to the healthcare crisis in Ceuta following the migrant influx, doctors and nurses have called a strike for 24 September. “The Ministry of Health’s persistent indifference leaves us with no alternative but to resort to the most extreme form of industrial action,” the CEMSATSE trade union has announced. CEMSATSE has the largest representation on INGESA’s Sectoral Committee and brings together doctors and nurses. “Healthcare services in Ceuta are not merely at breaking point; they have exceeded their operational capacity due to structural problems that the Ministry has failed to resolve, compounded by the strain caused by providing care to migrants following the mass influx in July,” the statement concludes.
– CEMSATSE is therefore calling on healthcare professionals and the public to “shed light on the deterioration of public healthcare”, which has worsened in Ceuta as a result of the crisis that began in July with the arrival of tens of thousands of migrants from Morocco. Healthcare workers have expressed their “strongest possible rejection” of statements by the Ministry of Health, which they say seek to deny the state of emergency facing the public health system in the autonomous city. Migrants Have Begun Squatting Homes In Ceuta: {Trans}
– The National Police he has arrested three immigrants, all of them Moroccans, for having occupied illegally three homes in different areas of the city, so they remain waiting to be brought to justice. As police sources have informed EFE, the arrests have occurred in the last few hours thanks to the citizen collaboration of neighbors that alerted the agents about these intrusions in different houses.
– The immigrants had broken into the interior of the homes after remaining in the city since the end of July, after massive entry through the border. The immigrants did not resist their arrest at the time of the police intervention. The three will be placed at the disposal of the judicial authority for an alleged crime of breaking and entering. Why is Spain providing weapons of war to a country that just allowed an invasion of Spanish territory, and additionally, lending them the money to do so? {Trans, summary}
– Spain is finalising delivery of a warship to Morocco amid an ongoing crisis over the mass assault on Ceuta’s border in late July. The vessel, an Avante 1800 patrol boat named Moulay Hassan, measures 87 metres and was built by state-owned Navantia in San Fernando, Cadiz. Declassified reports confirm Morocco’s CNI was warned of the mass land and sea entries, yet did nothing, and National Police evidence names Moroccan security agents as key facilitators of the incursion. Delivery thus proceeds despite documented Moroccan state involvement in the assault on Ceuta.
– The ship is designed for maritime surveillance, security, water control, rescue and offshore missions, capable of 24 knots and 4,000 nautical miles at 15 knots, with a crew of up to 60. Navantia will deliver it unarmed. Morocco will install weapons afterwards. The cost of the ship is around €130 million, with €95 million financed through a Banco Santander loan to Morocco in August 2022. Golf News- Irish Open Update: {Trans, summary of 2 articles}
– Ladies: Leona Maguire {pic} starred in one of the grand tours of Saturday’s international by completing the third round of the KPMG Women’s Irish Open with 63 strokes, nine under par, on The K Club’s Palmer South Course. The Irishwoman finished her lap without bogeys, with nine birdies, and reached a cumulative eleven under par, a result that provisionally placed her in fourth position while the rain forced the competition to be suspended. Full article: https://www.teleprensa.com/articulo/golf/leona-maguire…
– Mens: Shane Lowry has turned the second day of the Amgen Irish Open into an exhibition. The 2019 Open champion completed Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg in 62 strokes, eight under par, set a new course record and reached a cumulative -11, three strokes ahead of his pursuers among the players who had completed the morning. Lowry built the lap with nine birdies and a single bogey, flirted with a card under 60 strokes and transformed a solid first day into a very serious bid for the title of his national Open.
Jon Rahm, who shared a game with Lowry and Patrick Reed, also improved his situation. After par on the first day, the Spaniard reached the halfway point of the championship with -3, eight strokes behind Lowry but perfectly installed over the weekend.

Spain & Italy extend border controls for another 15 days due to the ongoing Ceuta border crisis: {Trans}
– The Ceuta migration crisis continues to have repercussions for Schengen allies. This Tuesday, the Spanish government announced another 15-day extension, until October 8, of border controls on air and sea connections with Italy. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior has again communicated this decision to the European Union in response to the measure previously adopted by the Government of Giorgia Meloni, all due to the massive influx of immigrants into Ceuta on August 8.
– The Government considers that the circumstances that motivated the adoption of this measure remain, and therefore it has been decided to extend it until October 8, “without prejudice to the fact that a change in these circumstances may advise a modification of the planned deadline.”
– Italy has also taken the same measure with Giorgia Meloni’s decision to extend the suspension of the Schengen agreement for another 15 days. The decision, made by Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s Interior Minister, results from Spain’s lack of border controls. Rome considers it a necessity due to the high internal security risks.
