Warning !

Yesterday at Torrox Costa a young dark haired woman approached me asking for money for food and putting her hand towards me as if wanting me to shake it. She eventually took hold of my hand and within a blink of an eye she almost had my watch off my wrist. She was an extremely skilled operator. She was small, little overweight with very dark hair tied back. Not sure of her nationality but she spoke Spanish. Be careful!  Lee

I am not sure volunteer groups are needed for the beaches here in the Axarquia.  In Torre del Mar (and probably the other towns too), the beaches are cleaned every day by the town hall.

In fact a voluntary scheme would be a bad idea as it would take away much needed employment.

They also regularly wash and clean the streets and tidy up generally on a daily basis.

If you don’t mind your Facebook page being inundated with posts you can follow their work on their Facebook page – “tenencia de alcaldía de torre del mar”.   With regard to recycling, it is frustrating if people don’t use the correct bins, although I haven’t noticed too many errors in my area.

However,  to defend Spain, at least we get the main bins emptied daily and there are loads of recycling bins around for everything, from used cooking oil to batteries and everything in-between.  Linda

 

 

UK bought electrical items work in Spain? 

We’re moving to Competa soon and have a Miele dishwasher and AEG all electric cooker which we want to bring with us.

Does anyone with electrical knowledge know if they will work OK in Competa?

If so, is there an electrician out there that could connect our cooker?

We’re also seeking a plumber to connect our dishwasher; plumbing will need to be installed.

Flight Partner for Dog- Advice & Encouragement

Dear Digamist, I read that a flight partner is needed for a dog going to Germany and would like to reassure you that it’s really easy to be a flight partner (Especially with Transavia Airline).

They fly to Amsterdam and Eindhoven but that’s also very close to the German border.

I’m sure many other Airlines do a good job except Ryanair

(another reason NOT to fly with them!)

I have been a flight partner a number of times and it’s really easy,

when you book your flight, all you need do to do is email the organizations

and give them your flight details

(There are no costs for the passenger, it’s all done by the rescue organization via their credit card onto your flight ticket, dogs are not allowed to fly alone without a passenger.).

At the other end, you pick up the dog like you do a suitcase and when you walk out, the new owners are waiting teary eyed and full of appreciation.

It’s heart warming to see that another sweetie has found a loving home…

So I hope that all you frequent flyers will give your heart a push and give it a try. Remember “A good deed a day “….

Recommendation Needed please- Building/Furnishing Projects

I have several house building/furnishing projects that I need to get cracking on and wonder if any Digamites out there can recommend appropriate companies or individuals to do them.

Specifically, I’m looking for

1)  A carpenter to build from wood, some simple bed frames, a few shelves and perhaps a bookcase or two.  I know, of course, that there are many, many premade ones available, but I have in mind something specific that I can’t find at any stores and/or built-in.

2) A maker of aluminum and mirror sliding doors, such as those that would be used on closets.

3) A source for a glass shower panel…the kind that goes from floor to ceiling, with no metal rod to support it

4) A source for custom made wood and glass interior doors.

Recommendation – for Steven Rowles Animal Healing practice.

Dear Readers

Some four weeks ago I contacted Steven Rowles Animal Healing about our dog. He was recommended to me through a friend of mine that keeps horses. She had engaged him to work with them and had apparently had amazing results. My friend I might add, is not the type to recommend anyone easily, so I took this recommendation seriously.

My husband and I had, some time ago, had taken on a crossbreed dog which we ourselves rescued off the street, and before long was showing a menagerie of issues and was turning our lives upside down. I often ended up in tears with frustration especially at the destructive behaviour in the house. My husband was actively looking for an alternative home.

Six sessions later with Steven we have a new life and strangely in all but appearance a new dog. I cannot recommend this man and his techniques, highly enough.

Long Term Rental – Website Available ?

Is there a website where owners advertise their properties direct and do not go through agencies. (We have tried Owners Direct without success).

We have been trying to rent long term between Nerja and Torre del Mar for some time but all the properties are either rented out or not available.

The other problem we have found is that enquires are not answered (especially by the English agency in Torre del Mar.)

This young dog was found wandering around Cortijos Romero, La Vinuela at the weekend.

She is very friendly and obviously is used to being with people.

Are there volunteer clean-up groups here on the Costa del Sol?

We read so much in the news about the seas/oceans being polluted with plastic and other detritus. In the USA and the UK there are many “adopt a stretch of beach/roadside” volunteer groups which devote time to cleaning up.

If anyone has a group doing similar here between Nerja and Malaga might they let us know through Digamextra?
On a sort of related issue: the UK is strong on recycling, so it sort of bugs me to see so much plastic, glass bottles and cardboard chucked into the general basura here in Spain when there are plastic, glass and cardboard recycling bins just a few feet away. It all ends up in landfill.  So many just don’t seem to care!

Puppy Found ! 

Puppy found in the campo below Frigiliana on Sunday, February 6.

The puppy was alone and crying for his mother.

He is 8-10 weeks old, possibly a pointer mix.

He is chocolate brown with white paws, a white patch on his nose and around his neck, chest, and at the tip of his tail.  He currently weighs 4.5 kilos.
The puppy was taken to the vet today for de-worming and flea-tick treatment and will return on Friday for vaccinations.

Lost ! Nerja Flea Market, I’m hoping for help!!

On Sunday 5 February I was at the Nerja Flea Market with friends and as you all know it was really windy, I had a shawl over my shoulder and my handbag over so I thought all good. At one point I realized that the wind must have blown it away. Normally not such a big deal but is was a Christmas gift from my Husband when we were in Seville together, so for me a real sentimental value.  After checking almost all stalls and asking the vendors, one of the them told me, that a lady found it and was waving it around from whom it was…. Too late for me I could’nt find her anymore.

So the shawl is wool, dark red with gray and black, and other colors woven in and out and I just love it…. If you have heard about it or maybe are the one who found it, I will gladly pay a finder fee because it means so much to me. I know it’s a wild shoot but as we all know Digamextra can work miracles and MAYBE just  maybe the finder also reads Digamextra. So here’s to HOPE that the finder will give me a call !!!

Keeping Up With Today’s Internet – Safe Email Practices
The world evolves and along with it the internet. New tech and threats require us to adopt new ways of doing things. Today I discuss email developments.
The “cloud” gets hacked regularly, as do email password lists. Power, internet outages, email server failures (and poor customer service for recovery, like Yahoo) and lost or stolen PCs can deny you access to cloud services. Thus, while convenient for storage, it alone is insufficient for securing valuable data. Here is how to protect yourself.
-Always back up copies of any valuable data or documents to an off-line storage device such as a Flash drive. Simply saving to the cloud and your computer/tablet/smartphone is not enough.
-Use a strong password with at least 12 characters including capitals and small letters plus numbers and punctuation marks. Change the password every 6 months. Never reuse a password on multiple sites.
-Don’t open attachments in unfamiliar emails. This should be a given by now, but email attachments are still a popular way to circulate malware.
-Don’t click on suspect links. If a link looks hidden, or if it comes from an unfamiliar source, don’t click it. It might take you to an unspecified location and possibly inject malware into your machine when you attempt to download the page. Be aware of any discrepancies in links that look mostly but not entirely familiar, such as “Amaz0n” instead of “Amazon,” and any shortened links.
-Avoid unsecured WiFi. Unsecured Wi-Fi like wifi cafe’s connections are open invitations to cybercriminals. They can gain public access to the system, and view any traffic you send or receive; which basically means they’ve gained access to your account.
-Avoid sending unnecessary personal information. One type of scam, phishing, involves goading a user to send personal login information, usually under the guise of a communication from an official but familiar company. As a general rule, it’s best to avoid sending any personal information over email (unless you absolutely have to). Man

Doggie Needs New Home Please  

This is a Podenco named Lisa. She is approximately 15 months old and has spent the past 7 months in kennels.

She has never had a home of her own so is desperate for love and attention.

She is:

Super sweet and affectionate – wants to cuddle on the couch with you!

Good with other dogs

Very high energy so needs lots of exercise

Best in a home with no young children or cats

Dogs are fine if they can handle her energy

Patience for a young dog is required

She would do well with an active person/family where someone is either home most of the time, or will have someone to care for the dog when they can’t.

Information & Advice Needed Please Selling own produce ?

Hi all Digamites  – Hope someone out there can enlighten me on the question of bestway to get our produce shifted without going the autonomo way.

I have been searching Google etc. for long time but no solution.

On our land we have about 100 trees which are tended by ourselves and

give a good small  crop – Until now we have been harvesting the avocadoes and delivered them to fruit-grocers on the coast via other persons using their registered VAT number and then paying the persons extra taxes on the extra income directly to the person. But it is a bit messy/complicated  and especially since no big amount  (around3000 Euro total a year)

Looking for other options without need of  involving others.

Do you NEED to be registered as autonomo yourself to deliver produce to

deliver to a fruit wholesaler – (Seems  wholesalers always ask for VAT number/autonomo number)

Are there other ways – Co-ops/whatever without needing to be autonomo

(the co-op deducts/pays the tax on delivery/whatever)

There must be other people out there having some land with small  produce which

they tend/harvest/sell instead of it just going to waste. How do you this.

Advice on this much  appreciated.

Complaint – Lack of Location Information

Once again I am amazed to see so many individuals, and indeed
businesses, who assume that we know where they are.  For example, in
yesterday’s Digamextra, Restaurant QueTal has an ad, they give a mobile
number, but no address, not even the area!  Regular clients of theirs
will know where they are, but an ad is surely designed to attract NEW
clients.  What a waste of space!  If they can’t be bothered, then
neither can I.

Long Shot – damaged Vehicle….Stolen Property

On Wednesday 25th January between 12.30 – 1.30pm we were parked at LIDL in Torrox and came back to find a small side window on our British registered truck/car smashed. To say we were annoyed was an understatement but after clearing the glass we thought we had got off lightly as nothing appeared to be missing.

That is not until now, when we have needed these items and cannot find them, that we have we discovered what they had taken.

The first item is a light grey ‘Gill’ mens sailing jacket, quite distinct with reflective strips on it and a hat and gloves in one of the pockets.

The second item is a black textured plastic bag for holding documents.

Inside this were map books of France and Spain and some small recipe books along with a distinct blue notebook that has a wire binder and Leo logo lion on it.

The value of the items is small in comparison to their sentimentality.

If anyone has/does come across them would they kindly hand them into the police station in Torrox or please email me. Thanks

I have had an architect to measure buildings etc. and apparently I am being charged for the outside patio space as it is tiled –  It is not a covered area

Empty Cans
Does anyone out there know if facilities are provided anywhere in the
area for the recycling of empty cans?  It seems that there are bins for
plastics, paper and cardboard, glass, etc, but nowhere can we find
anywhere to dump our cans, apart from in the general basura.

In this first week of February, Joe Boyle´s studio in La Molineta, Frigiliana, will feature the work of both Joe and reknowned Guest Artist Jill Carrot.

Other Guest Artists for the remaining weeks in February will be posted in good time.
The Open-Studio days constitute an attempt by five local artists to produce original work for sale to the public at affordable prices which will range from 10 euros for a mounted print ready for framing, to a framed, ready to hang, painting or canvas at prices up to 80/100 euros(many less-priced than this).
The studio can be easily found on the road from Nerja to Frigiliana, at La Molineta, just short of Frigiliana itself.
Do come and browse with a glass of something at absolutely no obligation.
If you want to make a day of it, Thursday is market day in Frigiliana, and the newly-opened Bar Molineta has terrific tapas.

How to Check if a Hoax is Valid

The Snopes website is a very useful web site that looks into hoaxes urban myths etc, posted on the Internet to see if they are true or not
According to Snopes “The “Can you hear me?” scam for now seems to be more a suggestion of a hypothetical crime scheme than a real one that is actually robbing victims of money.”
It is always a good idea to check on Snopes before forwarding warnings, If they describe it as a hoax or “not proven” it is probably best not to pass it on.

This is the entire Snopes team. David and Barbara Mikkelson pictured above; are from San Fernando Valley of California. They started their website  ‘Snopes’  about 13 years ago. After a few years it began gaining popularity as people believed it to be unbiased and neutral. But over the past couple of years people started asking questions when ‘Snopes’ was proven wrong in a number of their conclusions. There were also criticisms the Mikkelsons were not really investigating and getting to the ‘true’ bottom of various issues, but rather asserting their beliefs in controversial issues.

 Brian, what evidence do you have to suggest Snopes is trustworthy?  It is run by a husband and wife team – that’s right, no big office of investigators scouring public records in Washington, no researchers studying historical stacks in libraries, no team of lawyers reaching a consensus on current caselaw. No, Snopes.com is just a mom-and-pop operation that was started by two people who have absolutely no formal background or experience in investigative research. I highly recommend Sylvia Bowyer, physiotherapist.  After 5 or 6 sessions I’ve had a permanent reversal of chronic neck and upper back stress-induced arthritis and have found it no longer cracks or locks, this, after living with the issue for 10 years now, notably painful for the last 5 years.
This has also improved my sleep as I’d often wake with my neck locked and have to crack it to relieve the pain to get back to sleep.
Sylvia practices a gentle yet extremely powerful technique called the Bowen Technique.  I’d highly recommend this for any soft tissue work and also bone realignment amongst many other issues including a range of chronic illness, chronic fatigue etc. and would definitely suggest this style  above and beyond any harsher styles of therapy that force the body back into shape.  Sylvia is truly gifted and to get such results without any pain or discomfort, just relaxation, for the client is just incredible.
For the past 5 years I’ve tried many forms of physical therapy for my arthritis: different styles of massage , another form of physio (which gave relief for a week only and never resolved my neck issues), three different chiros, and absolutely none of them have been able to work on my arthritis, so I just assumed I would have to live with it.  It’s been over a month now since I started with Sylvia and even though I’ve been under work pressure, the stress just hasn’t sunk back into my neck and shoulders again.  AMAZING!
