Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

The Royal Decrees Begin To Fall– The rejection of the ‘rent decree’ opens a scenario of “uncertainty” for tenants- “It will be a hotbed of lawsuits”: {Trans., summary}
– The Congress of Deputies rejected the royal decree-law on the extraordinary extension of rental contracts. The rule has therefore lapsed, creating legal uncertainty for tenants who requested extensions during the five weeks it was in force. Lawyers are divided. Some argue that a repealed rule cannot project effects beyond its validity, meaning requested extensions would be void if the contract ends after the decree’s fall. Others maintain that extensions were requested under a valid law at the time, creating a consolidated right, and that congressional rejection has no retroactive effect.
– This disagreement is expected to generate a cascade of lawsuits between landlords and tenants in the courts, with different rulings possible in lower courts and years of appeals needed before higher instances like the Supreme Court can unify criteria.
– Beyond this legal chaos, the decree’s failure is a political defeat for the Government. The coalition is deeply divided. Sumar wishes to bring forward a new decree including the rental extension and additional measures, such as tax bonuses for landlords, to attract Junts’s support. The socialist wing, however, is reluctant, having agreed to the original extension only under pressure. Rather than promising immediate action, the socialists prioritise shifting the political cost onto the parties that voted against the decree, particularly the PP. The coalition’s division remains unresolved. Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/caida…

The Israeli press warns that Netanyahu and Trump could support Morocco’s plans for Ceuta and Melilla: {Trans., summary}
– Morocco’s expansionist desires for Ceuta and Melilla grow ever stronger. This risk to Spain has increased since Pedro Sánchez arrived at Moncloa, due to poor relations with the United States and Israel, as well as constant blackmail from Morocco (migration, customs restrictions, Pegasus spyware case stolen data from Sanchez’s mobile, and diplomatic pressure). Israeli media suggest Benjamin Netanyahu might support Morocco, having already backed Morocco’s Western Sahara claim in 2023.
– The newspaper ‘Ynet Global’ notes that Israel is a key partner of Morocco and can exert pressure on Spain via the US, given Spain’s refusal of US base access during the Iran war, missed NATO spending targets, and Sánchez’s hostility to Trump. Mario Díaz-Balart, chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security of the House of Representatives, has stated the enclaves lie on Moroccan, not Spanish, territory. Trump recently called Spain ‘terrible’ and ordered economic cuts over military issues; a Pentagon email suggested suspending Spain from NATO.
– Three Israeli support paths for Morocco exist: direct diplomacy portraying Spain’s occupation as undermining post-colonial credibility; influencing Washington by citing Morocco’s strategic value as a US treaty partner; and exposing Spanish hypocrisy in condemning Israeli policies while holding African enclaves predating modern Israel.
– This close Israel-Morocco relationship began with the 2020 Abraham Accords. Moreover, NATO will not defend Ceuta and Melilla against an aggressive takeover, as they lie outside the alliance’s collective defence umbrella. Sánchez’s government faces US, Israeli, and Moroccan pressure, while the People’s Party and Vox are criticised for allying with Israel, which prioritises Morocco over Spain. The pundulum swings back to the right– Almost 70% of Spanish youth are not satisfied with democracy and more than half believe that “a strong hand is needed”: {Trans., summary}
– The 68% of Spanish youth declare little or no satisfaction with the workings of democracy. This is one of the principal conclusions of the report ‘Young Spaniards 2026’, presented this Tuesday by the SM Foundation, which points to a ‘shift towards more individualistic and hedonistic values’, alongside a ‘clear decline in idealistic values’ such as commitment to the environment, social equality or gender equality.
– Nearly 70% of Spanish youth express dissatisfaction with democracy, and over half believe a strong hand is sometimes needed even at the cost of freedoms. A 2026 report reveals widespread political distrust, with 73.8% viewing all politicians as alike and 75% preferring expert-led technocracy over elected officials. Support for left or centre-left ideology has declined while centre-right and right identification has risen. However, polarisation remains modest, with only 23% willing to end friendships over political differences.
– The study, based on 1,700 interviews, also notes an uptick in Catholic identification from 31.6% to 45% since 2020, though young people blend traditional religion with beliefs in karma, reincarnation and magical arts. Dissatisfaction with democracy is attributed by researchers to democracy’s slow response to major problems and young people’s reliance on social media, which provides manipulation rather than reliable information. The authors warn that major dictatorships historically emerge from such systemic dissatisfaction, and these young Spaniards have no lived experience of dictatorship, leading to idealisation of authoritarian solutions. The PSOE urges Brussels to clarify whether the discrimination provided for by the “national priority” of Vox and PP conflicts with Treaties: {Trans., summary}
– The Spanish socialist party (PSOE) has asked the European Commission to rule on whether ‘national priority’ policies for social measures, agreed by PP and Vox in regions like Extremadura and Aragon, breach EU law.
– Socialist MEP Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar {pic} warns that granting preferential access to housing, benefits and public services for Spanish nationals over migrant persons may violate the principle of non-discrimination based on nationality under Article 18 of the TFEU and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. He has formally requested the Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, to assess compatibility with European law and to specify what measures Brussels would take to enforce full compliance if such preferential treatment is implemented. Britain challenges court decision that Palestine Action ban was unlawful:
– Britain on Tuesday sought to uphold a ban on pro-Palestinian group Palestine Action, which it has designated a terrorist organisation, after a court ruling that the move unlawfully interfered with freedom of expression. Palestine Action, which had increasingly targeted Israel-linked defence companies in Britain with a particular focus on Israel’s largest defence firm Elbit Systems was proscribed under terrorism laws last year. The ban placed the group on a par with Islamic State or al Qaeda, making membership a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
– London’s High Court ruled in February that the ban was unlawful, although it remains in force pending the outcome of the government’s appeal, which began on Tuesday. Lawyers for Britain’s interior minister, Shabana Mahmood, told the Court of Appeal that the finding that the ban had a significant impact on freedom of expression was “overstated and wrong”. WORLD
The United Arab Emirates leaves OPEC and OPEC+ on May 1 amid the Middle East crisis:
– The United Arab Emirates said on Tuesday it was quitting OPEC, dealing a heavy blow to the oil producers’ group as an unprecedented energy crisis triggered by the Iran war exposes discord among Gulf nations. The loss of the UAE, a longstanding OPEC member, could weaken the group, which has usually sought to show a united front despite internal disagreements over geopolitics and production quotas. The UAE’s departure came after Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser for the UAE president, criticised the Arab and Gulf response to recent Iranian attacks in a session at the Gulf Influencers Forum on Monday.
– The UAE’s exit from OPEC represents a win for U.S. President Donald Trump, who in a 2018 address to the U.N. General Assembly accused the organisation of “ripping off the rest of the world” by inflating oil prices.

HEALTH
The PNV (Basque Nationalist Party) urges Sánchez to assume the negotiation with the doctors because Minister of Health Mónica García is already in her campaign in Madrid: {Trans, summary}
– PNV spokesperson Maribel Vaquero {pic} has demanded that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez personally take over negotiations with striking doctors, accusing Health Minister Mónica García of mishandling the situation. Vaquero fears García is distracted by her campaign to be the Más Madrid candidate for the Madrid regional elections, leaving the doctors’ dispute on her ‘waiting list of priorities’.
– Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s parliamentary control session, Vaquero will ask Sánchez about his priorities and whether he intends to govern effectively or simply campaign until the legislature ends. She insisted that ‘you do not play games with health’ and that Sánchez must act urgently to reduce waiting lists, which currently ‘fall on his shoulders’. New heat wave rules force bar terraces to close during high heat alerts unless cooling gear is installed: {Trans, summary}
– Under new hospitality labour rules in Spain, bar terraces must close during heat waves unless cooling equipment is installed. {No mention if fans are sufficient or if real air-con or mechanical/evaporation coolers will be needed, or if the terrace must be enclosed. -Ed.} When the State Meteorological Agency issues red or orange alerts for extreme heat, venues without cooling systems on their terraces cannot serve customers outdoors. The terrace must remain inoperative during hours of severe alert, though the indoor bar may stay open.
– This measure protects workers’ physical health. Employers who force staff to work on a terrace under red alert without protective cooling gear face serious fines from the Labour Inspection, exceeding 50,000 euros. Workers have legal backing to refuse tasks that endanger their health in bad weather. The regulation integrates climate risk management into Occupational Risk Prevention plans, requiring specific plans for extreme heat or other severe weather conditions. To avoid terrace closures during heat waves, bars must install cooling systems to fight high temperatures. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/economia/espana-implanta-nuevas-normas…
OBITUARIES
Nedra Talley Ross, the last surviving member of the 1960s bee-hived pop trio the Ronettes has died:
– Nedra Talley Ross, the last surviving member of the 1960s bee-hived pop band the Ronettes, who sang the enduring hits “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You” and “Walking in the Rain” alongside her cousins, has died. She was 80. Ross died at home Sunday, according to the singer’s daughter, Nedra K. Ross, and the Ronettes’ official Instagram account. “Nedra’s voice, style and spirit helped define a sound that would change music. Her contribution to the group’s story and their defining influence will live forever,” a statement read.
– The Ronettes’ sexy look and powerful voices, plus songwriting and producing help from Phil Spector, turned them into one of the premier acts of the girl-group era, touring England with The Rolling Stones and befriending the Beatles.
– “Show business is a thing that can be great, but it can be bad, too,” Ross said during her acceptance speech to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. “For us, we had a family that gave us a core to help stabilise us in a very difficult crazy world. It was a fun time. I thank God truly for it.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/nedra-talley-ross-ronettes-dies-d9c9f08e7d2e08ec408917ce24b88249 & Video Link
