Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Meat Rip-Off, Customers Gouged on Pork Prices, Profit Margins of 250% to 450%: {Trans, summary}
– Pork prices in Spain show a significant disparity between the farm and the end consumer , according to the Coordinator of Farmers’ and Livestock Breeders’ Organizations (COAG). While the price paid to farmers has fallen by 29% in two years, consumers face a 6.9% price increase, reaching the highest level recorded in the historical series of the Origin-Destination Price Index (IPOD).
– COAG has analyzed price trends between April 2024 and April 2026 and detected a “growing and unjustified gap” between what farmers receive and what supermarkets pay. This disparity between the different links in the food chain highlights structural problems in price transmission throughout the process.
– In April 2024, the farmgate price was €1.83 per kilo, which is what the farmer received, while the retail price, what the consumer paid, reached €6.45 per kilo. The difference between the two prices was €3.52 per kilo, representing a profit margin of 252%.
– Two years later, the situation has reversed for producers and consumers: the price farmers receive has fallen to €1.30 per kilo, a drop of 28.9%. Meanwhile, consumers now pay €6.90 per kilo, 6.9% more than in April 2024, a figure that represents the highest price ever recorded in the analyzed period.
– The current gap between the farmgate price and the retail price has widened to €5.31 per kilo, representing an IPOD margin of 431%. The agricultural organization emphasizes that this trend indicates a growing transfer of income from producers to the distribution chain and the meat industry, while consumers foot the bill.
– These data show that the drop in farmgate prices is not being passed on to the end consumer. During 2025 and early 2026, while farmers’ income steadily declined, supermarket prices not only remained stable but continued to rise, reaching their peak in April 2026. Pension Funding Scandal Update– The Government diverted €2,389 million in European recovery-plan funds to the payment of pensions due to the lack of Budgets: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Court of Auditors has accused the Government of using €2,389 million in EU recovery funds to pay civil servant pensions and minimum pension top-ups in November 2024 in a new report. The Government resorted to this because the extended 2023 budget, still in force, left insufficient money for unavoidable pension commitments.
– While the Government claims the move did not compromise the recovery plan, the Court found the legal justification weak and criticised the uncertainty over using EU funds for non-recovery purposes. The Court also warns of a serious structural deficit in the pension system. Spending approvals greatly exceeded original budget plans, and most of the extra money had to come from borrowing.
– Social Security’s debts have now exceeded its assets for eight years in a row, with a shortfall of over €106,000 million. The report also reveals €1,627 million in payments that were made but lack proper justification or approval, and these have missed legal deadlines. Other accounting failures include incorrect recording of debts. For example, tax debts were overvalued by €1,263 million, while Social Security debts were undervalued by €2,643.9 million. Because of errors in when obligations and revenues were recorded, the Court found the overall budget result was overstated by €4,090.3 million.
– The inculpatory report statement was approved with one dissenting vote and six concurrent explanatory votes. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/economia/gobierno-desvio-2389-millones…

Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños Lies About Budget Requirement: {Trans, summary, explainer}
– The government has made another U-turn on the budget. Just over a week ago, the First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, postponed the presentation of the general budget law for “months” and set the budget preparation for 2027. But this Tuesday, the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, announced its inclusion in this year’s legislative plan. Furthermore, he stated that presenting the budget is not a constitutional obligation, but a political one. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/espana/gobierno-otro-bandazo…
{Explainer:
– The Spanish Constitution (Article 134.3) explicitly states: “The Government must present the General State Budgets to the Congress of Deputies at least three months before the expiration of those of the previous year”. The last budget approved was in 2022 for 2023. When Bolaños calls it a “political obligation,” he is exploiting the lack of a specific punishment to redefine the law as a suggestion. The Minister is trying to downgrade a “must” into a “should”. The reason the government has used to avoid presenting budgets since 2022 is that the Constitution provides no specific penalty for missing the deadline. If the government fails to present a budget, the previous year’s budget is automatically “prorogued” (extended). This dubious reading of the constitution allows the government to continue operating quasi-legally without facing a budget vote they would likely lose.
– This budget postponement has been challenged in the courts. In October 2025, the Senate (controlled by the opposition People’s Party) approved a conflict of powers against the government for not presenting budgets. In February 2026, the Constitutional Court unanimously admitted this challenge for review. This is the first time the court will examine the government’s failure to present budgets for 2024, 2025, and 2026. However, such cases can take months or years to resolve. -Ed.}

AXARQUÍA

Two people arrested for a real estate scam of more than 800,000 euros in the Axarquía region: {Trans, summary}
– Two people have been arrested in Axarquía, for an alleged property fraud causing over €800,000 in losses. The investigation began in December 2025 and has so far uncovered 20 fraud offences, with victims in Málaga, Jaén, Seville and Córdoba.
– The main suspect, a former estate agent in Torrox, reportedly misused his industry knowledge to steal rental funds. After being dismissed, he continued fraudulently, using company papers to gain trust. The scheme involved offering property sales or rentals that never went ahead, requesting advance cash payments for deposits or fees. Money was channelled through his own and third-party accounts.
– A second suspect helped by showing properties and moving cash. A home search in Torre del Mar yielded incriminating documents. Analysing seven bank accounts and freezing financial products allowed recovery of €99,911, returned to some victims. The investigation continues to determine the full scale of the fraud. The case has been sent to the Court of Torrox. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/detenidas-dos-personas-por-una-estafa-inmobiliaria-de-mas-de-800-000-euros-en-la-axarquia/

MALAGA CITY

Malaga City Council raises the price of bus tickets to 1.50 euros: {Trans, summary}
– A single bus ticket in Málaga city will cost 10 cents more. The price will rise from €1.40 to €1.50 per trip. A year after its approval by the Urban Planning and Mobility Commission, the Local Governing Board has taken the final step to implement the increase. City Hall has justified the price hike by citing the promotion of multi-trip tickets and support for their financing.
– Furthermore, the City Council justifies the price increase by comparing itself to other major cities . “With this update, the price of a single EMT bus ticket is now on par with transport companies in cities like Valencia or Valladolid,” they stated in a press release. TORROX

Torrox awards the works to install the second longest wooden bridge in Andalusia: {Trans, summary}
– Torrox Town Council has awarded a €717,179.75 contract to Urinci S.L.U. to build a 165-metre-long wooden footbridge over the River Torrox. Once completed, it will be the second longest wooden bridge in Andalusia. The bridge, which will have a width of three metres and be for pedestrians only, will be constructed next to the Torrox Lighthouse, a protected archaeological site. The project also includes 100 metres of access paths.
– Scots pine wood will be used, with handrails or parapets where needed. Last January, the council awarded a separate contract for the timber supply to Media Madera Ingenieros Consultores SL, bringing the total investment to nearly two million euros.
– Mayor Óscar Medina called the bridge a key link in connecting four kilometres of existing coastal path between Punta del Faro and Peñoncillo beach. The council is also working with the Provincial Council of Málaga on two additional sections of the coastal path towards Jardines del Mar and Barranco del Agua. EUROPE

Romanian government falls due to a no-confidence vote by social democrats and far-right parties: {Trans, summary}
– Romania’s conservative government under Ilie Bolojan has fallen after parliament passed a no-confidence motion backed by Social Democrats and ultranationalists. The vote, the largest such since 1990, saw 281 votes in favour. The coalition collapsed when the PSD left the cabinet, protesting Bolojan’s fiscal adjustments, including tax rises, spending cuts, salary reductions and redundancies, aimed at tackling a 7.9% deficit, the EU’s highest. The PSD accused Bolojan of excessive harshness. He defended the measures as necessary to ensure EU funds. President Nicusor Dan, who will appoint the next prime minister, has ruled out fresh elections and begun consultations to form a new executive, urging calm and reaffirming Romania’s pro-EU, pro-NATO course. The press suggests acting interior minister Catalin Predoiu as a possible consensus leader. The crisis has depressed the leu and raised borrowing costs.
