Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

ANDALUCIA

Andalucia Elections are Sunday, 19 June 2022 – Right-wing bloc slips back slightly in polls but still holds a clear majority: {Translation} 07/06/2022 15:52
-The new update of the compendium of electoral poll projections compiled by Electomania-EM and distributed exclusively by Porcentual.es, indicates a slight setback for the right-wing forces in Andalusia. PP and VOX are down in terms of the distribution of seats and would now have 46 and 19, respectively, one less than in the previous update of this compendium. Despite this small setback, both parties would have a very comfortable majority to form a government in Andalusia.
-The PSOE has a 26 per cent share of the vote, which would mean it would equal the result of the previous election, when it was the most voted party with 33 deputies. On the other hand, the other two left-wing forces have not managed to reach the previous result, so it seems clear that the splitting of the parties to the left of the PSOE will not produce good results.
-Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla’s Partido Popular (PP) would be the clear winner of the elections with 35 percent of the vote and 46 seats, which would comfortably surpass all the representation achieved by the left-wing bloc. Ciudadanos, for its part, is still on the verge of being able to enter Parliament, although it would do so in a marginal way.
-In the compendium of Andalusian electoral polls, a map with the most likely results in each of Andalusia’s municipalities can also be found. In order to make this projection, the data from the polls is taken into account, as well as the available electoral behaviour and the votes obtained in the last two general elections, which took place in 2019.
-Thus, the PP would win in the eight provincial capitals of Andalusia. In general terms, the PSOE would be in the majority in the western area, while the PP would win in provinces such as Almería, Granada, Jaén, Málaga and Córdoba. Source, Spanish:

The agreement, which was signed on 30 May, sets out a series of proposals for modification, based on a study carried out by the University of Granada, which stresses that this rail connection would meet the objectives of sustainability, cohesion, efficiency, resilience and quality of transport in the region of the Costa Tropical as an area of the European Union. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson survives no-confidence vote:
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was meeting his Cabinet and trying to patch up his tattered authority on Tuesday after surviving a no-confidence vote that has left him a severely weakened leader. Johnson vowed to “get on with the job” and focus on “what matters to the British people”, defined as the economy, health care and crime, after Conservative Party lawmakers voted by 211 to 148 to support him as leader.
Johnson needed the backing of 180 of the 359 Conservative lawmakers in Monday’s secret ballot to stay in power.
Under party rules, Johnson is now free from another challenge for a year. But previous prime ministers who have faced no-confidence votes, including May and Margaret Thatcher, have been terminally damaged. Full article:

Brexit Consequences- Spain Removes Entry Measures for EU Nationals, but Not for Britons:
-The Spanish authorities announced last week that the country would no longer apply COVID-19 entry rules for travellers from the European Union/Schengen Area but did not make any exemptions for those travelling from the United Kingdom.
-Announcing the newly updated travel rules, the Spanish Ministry of Health pointed out that the entry rules for travellers from outside the EU/Schengen Area have not changed.
-This means that all travellers from the UK are still subject to COVID rules when reaching Spain.
-The Spanish Ministry of Health explains that all travellers over the age of 12 from the UK as well as those from the other third countries, must present a valid vaccination, recovery, or test certificate upon their arrival. All cancer patients in drug trial appear to be cured for ‘first time in history’:
-An experimental cancer drug appears to have cured every single patient in a small clinical trial conducted in the US. All 12 patients, who had been diagnosed with rectal cancer, entered into remission after taking dostarlimab over a six-month period, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
-“This is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer”, Dr Luis Diaz, one of the lead authors of the paper and an oncologist at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, told The New York Times.
-The patients also experienced no significant side effects during the course of their treatment, though it’s believed not enough people were involved in the study to highlight the different adverse reactions caused by the drug.
-Although excited by the research, scientists have said the promising results will need to be repeated, and cautioned against concluding whether the patients had been cured of their cancer.
-Dostarlimab is an immunotherapy drug used in the treatment of endometrial cancer, but this was the first clinical investigation of whether it could be effective against rectal cancer tumours.
-The drug works by unmasking cancer cells, allowing the immune system to identify and destroy them. Source article: https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/health/all-cancer-patients-in-drug-trial-appear-to-be-cured-for-first-time-in-history-41729046.html

EU countries, lawmakers clinch deal on single mobile charging port, Apple impacted:
-Apple will have to change the connector on its iPhones sold in Europe by 2024 as EU countries and EU lawmakers on Tuesday agreed to a single mobile charging port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras.
-The agreement is a world first and came after companies failed to agree on a common solution. The European Commission had pushed for a single mobile charging port more than a decade ago.
-Users of iPhones and Android phones have long complained about having to use different chargers for their devices. The former is charged from a Lightning cable while Android-based devices are powered using USB-C connectors.
-“By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will become the common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU,” the European Parliament said in a statement. Full article:

When do pensioners get extra summer pay?: This remuneration will be paid with the June payroll, that is, at the end of this month, as a normal and current payroll. With which the payment will be made on July 1, although the exact day on which the payment will take place depends on each bank. The Ministry recalls that both contributory benefit pensioners and non-contributory they have a right to it. Although she remembers that those pensioners with permanent disability pension do not get it, since their pension is prorated in twelve installments, and not in fourteen, so the extra payments are already included. The CPI triggers the costs of SMEs by 23% in one year and strangles the profitability of thousands of businesses: The sharp rise in costs, both labour and raw materials, has caught thousands of businesses without the capacity to absorb the increase in expenses, which has led many of them to reduce their profit margins in order to maintain activity in the midst of an inflationary upswing. Specifically, in the first quarter of 2022 these global costs have increased by 23%, while in the same period the recovery has allowed sales to rise by 19%, four points less, which puts even more pressure on the balance sheets of small and medium-sized companies in our country. FINANCIAL

Oil tops $120 a barrel on Saudi pricing despite OPEC+ deal: Brent crude was up 4 cents to $119.76 a barrel at 12:22 p.m. EDT (1622 GMT) after touching an intraday high of $121.95.
-U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 8 cents, or 0.1%, to $118.95 a barrel after hitting a three-month high of $120.99. The benchmark fell by $1 earlier in the session.
-Saudi Arabia raised the July official selling price (OSP) for its flagship Arab light crude to Asia by $2.10 from June to a $6.50 premium over Oman/Dubai quotes, just off an all-time-high recorded in May when prices hit highs due to worries of disruptions in supplies from Russia.
-The price increase followed a decision last week by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, together called OPEC+, to boost output for July and August by 648,000 barrels per day, or 50% more than previously planned, though constraint in global refining capacity has kept prices elevated. New Lou Reed Album Featuring Unreleased Songs Announced by Light in the Attic: A new Lou Reed album featuring never-before-heard material and early demos is being released. Words & Music, May 1965 will come out on August 26 as part of the reissue label Light in the Attic‘s new archival series in partnership with Laurie Anderson. Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation for Warren Car Clean Malaga: I am writing to say how pleased I am with Warren Phillips and Car Clean Malaga. I have a 2001 Lexus ES 300 with about 151K miles. I have had great results with the car, and have tried to keep it in good condition. I reached out to Warren to get it “detailed” cleaned and conditioned. He and his wife did a fantastic job. The car looks brand new! The interior is spotless. The dash, the seats, the floor mats, all looking great! But the exterior is the most noticeable. It’s shines with a great smooth-to-the-touch professional looking finish. Warren used a new technology ceramic coating product that is beautiful and, I’m told, long-lasting with proper care. A few other things I should mention is that Warren came and picked up the car, gave me a “loaner” vehicle to use while he did his work, and returned my car promptly as promised. I am happy to recommend Warren Phillips and Car Clean Malaga. Ron/ Nerja. radam10AThotmailD0Tcom

Piracy, It’s a Crime- UK Govt. Ignored Warnings, Now Families Pay The Price: The Digital Economy Act 2017 was the government’s attempt at creating a better, safer internet for citizens in the UK.
-It included an amendment to the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act that raised the maximum sentence for online infringement to 10 years in prison, with a basic threshold of simply exposing a copyright owner “to a risk of loss“. This meant that anyone downloading and sharing a single song or a single movie using BitTorrent became criminals in the eyes of the law.
-The term “copyright troll” is often applied to companies that monitor file-sharing networks, collect IP addresses they claim are sharing movies, and compel ISPs to hand over the identities related to those IP addresses. They then send letters claiming that legal action in the civil courts will follow, should the recipient (including innocent billpayers) refuse to pay a considerable financial sum.
-While these letters are unpleasant to receive, under copyright law they are entirely legal and if the person named in the letter did indeed infringe the movie company’s rights, settling a case might be the sensible course of action. Pope Francis fuels new speculation on future of pontificate:
-Pope Francis added fuel to rumors about the future of his pontificate by announcing he would visit the central Italian city of L’Aquila in August for a feast initiated by Pope Celestine V, one of the few pontiffs who resigned before Pope Benedict XVI stepped down in 2013.
-Italian and Catholic media have been rife with unsourced speculation that the 85-year-old Francis might be planning to follow in Benedict’s footsteps, given his increased mobility problems that have forced him to use a wheelchair for the last month.
-Those rumors gained steam last week when Francis announced a consistory to create 21 new cardinals scheduled for Aug. 27. Sixteen of those cardinals are under age 80 and eligible to vote in a conclave to elect Francis’ successor. Photo:AP. Covid Andalucia- Decrease of 101 hospital admissions since Tuesday to 578 and ICUs down by four: {Translation, 03/06/2022 · 12:51}
-On Friday, 3 June, Andalusia recorded a drop of 101 hospitalisations due to coronavirus compared to Tuesday 31 May to 578, the lowest figure since 12 April (484), while admissions to intensive care units (ICU) fell by four to 27.
-Director of Health and Families of the Board of Andalusia, Jesús Aguirre, stressed that “we are already on a trend, not a saw-toothed one, but a clearly downward trend”.
-In this context, the evolution of “ICU admissions” also fits in, as “we are at 27 ICU admissions”, and this after “we have reached figures of 700 in other periods. We would have to go to the middle of 2020 to find a figure of 27 hospital admissions at ICU level, in the whole of Andalusia.
-These figures mean, according to the minister, that the pandemic in Andalusia is following “a clear downward trend, and we hope that it does not stop”, but neither can we forget, Aguirre warned, that “the virus is with us and that the virus continues to cause deaths” and infections. Why you should be raising your rates if you’re self-employed in Spain: With inflation in Spain at its highest rate in four decades, many of the 3.1 million self-employed people working in Spain have increased their rates in order to try and make up the difference and stay afloat financially. According to data from the official ATA barometer for May 2022, well over half (57.3 percent) have already upped the prices of their products and services. In fact, the ATA barometer reveals that almost half of those interviewed would rather not be self-employed again. In fact, one in five who have deregistered said they would “never” be autónomos again.
-The price rise that’s impacted businesses in Spain most is that of electricity (70 percent affected), followed by raw material and petrol price increases, affecting around 42 percent of those surveyed. And the trend looks set to continue, as 80 percent of autónomos surveyed said their businesses have been “fairly” or “very” affected by rising inflation.
-This comes as many self-employed workers are still trying to recover from the loss of earnings brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, with 66 percent of respondents stating they have yet to recover those losses. Half of those fear they won’t recoup the difference from losses during the pandemic until 2023.

Spain has only administered 2% of the anticovid pills for which it paid €238 million: After the vaccines, Paxlovid was the great hope to end covid-19: an oral treatment produced by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer that reaches up to 89% efficacy in reducing hospitalizations and deaths and that works against all variants, including omicron. On January 27, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave the green light to these anticovid pills and Spain soon showed great interest in acquiring them. So much so that the Ministry of Health reached an agreement with Pfizer to receive 344,000 complete treatments for 238 million euros (at 691 euros each). “This drug represents a very important advance to continue saving lives,” said the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, on March 24, when she signed the contract with the company. But the use of Paxlovid is being almost nil. Health has already received 51,649 treatments, of which 50,000 have been distributed to the communities, but so far only 1,218 have been dispensed, just 2.35% of them, Darias revealed in the Congressional Health Commission. Food alerts for Lidl and Mercadona products in Spain:
-In the first case, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) reported the presence of salmonella in the 500g packaging of minced poultry meat (Chicken-Turkey Burger Meat) sold by the German supermarket chain Lidl. The affected lot is number 3369, with an expiration date of June 3, 2022. Its packaging is a plastic tray and it is sold refrigerated.
-The second of the alerts declared has to do with chia seeds in Mercadona’s Hacendado brand, due to the presence of the soy allergen not being included in the product labelling. Full article: https://euroweeklynews.com/2022/06/03/food-alerts-for-lidl-and-mercadona-products-in-spain/

British Nationals Can Still Use Their Unexpired EHIC Cards When Travelling to EU, Despite Brexit: A large number of British nationals can still use their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) when travelling to the majority of European Union and Schengen Area countries, in spite of the United Kingdom’s complete departure from the EU in December 31, 2020.
-However, due to UK’s departure from the bloc, new EHIC cards are now issued only to UK nationals that are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. While it is estimated that around 5.6 million EHIC cards will have expired by the end of this year, a lot of them will remain valid in 2023, in particular those that were issued throughout 2020, just before Brexit, since an EHIC card can be issued for up to five years. Tennis News- Rafael Nadal reaches French Open final to face Casper Ruud after Alexander Zverev retires with ankle injury:
Rafael Nadal was locked in a tight, compelling and lengthy French Open semifinal Friday when his opponent, third-seeded Alexander Zverev, ran to to chase a shot and twisted his right ankle. Zverev crumpled to the ground, wailing in agony and clutching at his lower leg.
The sudden end to a contest that was 3 hours old but not even through two full sets allowed Nadal to become, on his 36th birthday, the second-oldest men’s finalist in French Open history. Now he will try to become the oldest champion at a tournament he’s already won a record 13 times, facing first-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud on Sunday. Photo:Reuters. FINANCIAL

ECB considers it “disproportionate” to lower the cash payment limit to 1,000 euros in Spain: {Translation, summary}
-A “disproportionate” limit, an “excessive” penalty regime and less freedom for citizens to choose their means of payment. In these terms, the European Central Bank (ECB) has criticised the limit of 1,000 euros for cash payments established by Spain. On 11 July, the anti-fraud law came into force, which entailed a reduction from the previous limit of 2,500 euros for transactions between professionals and individuals, well below the common limit of 10,000 euros proposed by the European Commission for member states. The European Central Bank does not perceive the Spanish initiative as an example to follow, but rather as an excess of control by the Spanish government.
-The European banking authority has produced a report, the conclusions of which are clear. The European Central Bank (ECB) considers the €1,000 limit to be “disproportionate”. “Such a reduction will have undesirable adverse effects on the legal tender status of euro banknotes. Moreover, this cash limit significantly reduces the ability of payers to use euro banknotes and the freedom of citizens to choose the means of payment”, the document states.
-This analysis also detects discrimination between payments made by residents, to whom the €1,000 cap applies, and those made by foreigners, who can pay up to €10,000 in cash. “As the ECB has already warned with regard to the €10,000 limitation on cash payments by natural persons not acting in their capacity as entrepreneurs or professionals and not domiciled for tax purposes in Spain to persons acting in their capacity as entrepreneurs or professionals, the application of a different rule to payments made by non-residents does not seem justified, and discriminates against payments made by residents,” the document stresses.
-In terms of the offences and penalties, the ECB considers that the sanctions regime established in the law is excessive and, in particular, “the 25% penalty of the amount paid seems disproportionately high”. The ECB reiterates that the limitations on cash payments should not go beyond what is necessary to achieve its objectives, and that any negative effects of the proposed limitations must be carefully weighed with the public benefits that are expected of them. SPAIN

Spain eliminates the Covid passport for travelers from European countries and the Schengen: {Translation}
-Spain will no longer subject travelers from the European Union or countries associated with the Schengen Treaty to health checks, according to the Official State Gazette (BOE) published on Thursday.
-Checks will continue to be carried out for travelers from non-EU or Schengen-associated countries, including at least a temperature check and a documentary check.
-Health justifies this change by the improvement in the epidemiological situation of the pandemic “which is causing many Member States to no longer require travelers from within the European Union to present covid certificates or impose other restrictions”.
-In Spain, due to the high vaccination coverage rates, above the EU average, and the favourable situation of the health system, “it is also considered appropriate to eliminate travel restrictions for people from countries belonging to the European Union or with a high level of vaccination coverage”. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/turismo/nacional/noticia-espana-elimina-pasaporte-covid-viajeros-paises-europeos-schengen-20220602104239.html

Spain Gov’t Covid Response Plans Were All Illegal: {Translation}
(As is typical with the current Socialists running the Spanish national gov’t, they force their dubious plans on the public regardless of if these are legal, then after implementation, they leave it to the courts to clean up their mess. -Ed.)
-The Constitutional Court has annulled and declared unconstitutional the reform of the Executive of Pedro Sánchez that left in the hands of the High Courts of Justice (TSJ) the judicial endorsement of the health restrictions, approved by the regional governments, when the states of alarm expired.
-This is another new blow to the Government’s management of the pandemic, as the TC court previously declared the two states of alarm unconstitutional, as well as the suspension of parliamentary activity during the first weeks of the first one.
-The Plenary of the Court of Guarantees has thus upheld the question of unconstitutionality raised by the High Court of Justice of Aragon in relation to art. 10.8 of the Law on contentious-administrative jurisdiction, modified by the second final provision of the Law on procedural and organisational measures to deal with the covid-19 in the field of the Administration of Justice. The ruling was approved by a majority of seven to four, with the dissenting votes of judges María Luisa Balaguer and Inmaculada Montalbán and judges Cándido Conde-Pumpido and Ramón Sáez.
-The precept attributed to the High Courts of Justice of the autonomous communities the competence for judicial authorisation or ratification of the measures adopted by regional governments and local entities, which imply the limitation or restriction of fundamental rights. However, the Constitutional Court’s judgement, with magistrate Enrique Arnaldo presiding, points out that this modification violates the constitutional principle of separation of powers, by attributing to the judicial bodies of the contentious-administrative order functions that are alien to their constitutional mission. And, furthermore, to the detriment of the regulatory power that the Constitution attributes to the executive power, without conditioning it to the complement or authorisation of the judges or courts in order to enter into force and become effective, with publication in the corresponding official gazette being sufficient for this purpose.
-The TC states that the regulatory power is attributed by the Constitution to the executive power in an exclusive and excluding manner, so it is not possible for the legislator to convert it into a power shared with the judiciary, which is not co-governing.
-Thus, the resolution points out that this unconstitutional formula of powers also violates the principle of effectiveness of administrative action and makes it difficult to demand political and legal accountability from the executive in relation to its general health provisions.
-It also violates the constitutional principles of publicity of the rules and legal certainty, given that the judicial decisions authorising these restrictions are not published in the corresponding official gazette, which makes it difficult for citizens to find out about them.
-For their part, the four progressive magistrates incorrectly held that the Government’s reform has express constitutional coverage, does not affect the separation of powers, judicial independence or the effectiveness of regulatory power. Could this be the end for fake reviews of items bought online?:
The law in Spain has changed, and companies now have to confirm whether the people who leave comments about their goods or services are genuine customers that bought the product, and this must be indicated in the review. Attempts to mislead could lead to huge fines. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/could-this-mean-20220530115303-nt.html

FRIGILIANA

The mayor of Frigiliana lashes out at the Mancomunidad and predicts its demise: {Translation}
-The mayor of Frigiliana, Alejandro Herrero, has lashed out against the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Axarquía, on the programme “Más Axarquía” on Radio Moscatel. In the interview conducted by Francisco Millán, the socialist councillor expressed his dissatisfaction with the policy of the supra-municipal body, and once again insisted that he wants to leave it. Something which is not new, as “I want to get out of it from two years ago”, commented Herrero.
-Throughout the interview he has leveled accusations against the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Axarquia, as Herrero stressed: “They have not answered us as to what procedure we have to carry out, we hope to have clear plans what the exit is, and how much is owed”. He went on to insist, “the Mancomunidad is going to disappear, it is in technical bankruptcy, they should join forces, infrastructures, and in the face of any problem help. And I give as an example, the pandemic. There was an opportunity to help, but the help has been zero”.
-His statements have been categorical, always very unhappy with the Mancomunidad. “I have had to find my own way to give masks to the elderly, when there were none and they were expensive”. For the mayor of Frigiliana: “The Mancomunidad is not worth it, it costs us 20,000 euros a year, we have already been very supportive, it is of no use to me. For others it can be useful to have political posts. To me it is a pointless”.
-Herrero lamented: “There is a problem in the Mancomunidad, it is useless. Frigiliana does not need them to be promoted in tourism. They hand out salaries to all the political parties, which they surely wouldn’t earn in their respective villages”.
-The Frigiliana councillor also lashed out at Axaragua: “The political management is 220,000 euros a year, they meet a few times a year, that is 4 times a year. With that money we could finance a project”. Photo:axarquiaplus. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/el-alcalde-de-frigiliana-arremete-contra-la-mancomunidad-y-vaticina-su-desaparicion/

You can see all 5 naked-eye planets align in the night sky this month, a rare treat:
-Skywatchers will be treated to a rare “planet parade” this month. All five naked-eye worlds will line up in their proper orbital order from the sun in our sky.
-From left to right in the southeastern predawn sky, you’ll be able to spot Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all in a row. (Mercury will be quite close to the horizon when the show starts June 3 but becomes easier to spot as the month matures. The best opportunity to see the spectacle might come on June 24.)
-The five-planet fiesta will span 91 degrees of our sky on June 3, according to Sky&Telescope. “Find a place with a clear view low toward the east to maximize your chances of catching Mercury,” the magazine said in a press release (opens in new tab).
-You’ll also need to move quickly. “You’ll have less than half an hour between when Mercury first appears above the horizon, and when it essentially gets lost in the glare of the rising sun,” Sky&Telescope wrote. Full article: https://www.space.com/five-planets-align-skywatching-june-2022

Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation for SPW Construction: Scott and his team have recently completed a large redecoration and partial refurbishment project in our old olive mill and we are pleased with the results. Scott has a team of general builders and knows when to call in expert specialists, of whom he has a wide network. He is also not afraid to say when when he is not able to do something – though this was rare!
-The project involved damp treatment and repalstering of two walls, installing additional electric sockets, moving a radiator, treating and protecting 60+ beams and repainting the sitting room, dining area and mezzanine study. The sitting room is a large space with very high ceilings that is fairly similar to a British barn. The necessary equipment and insurances were in place to carry put the work well and keep everyone safe. The workmen were all very tidy and cleaned up thoroughly every day. The work was also carried out with generally good humour during the difficult weather conditions during with the ‘mud rain’. Additional work requested after the job had started was also accommodated at reasonable cost. As with all such work, it would be helpful to keep written agreement of the details of what is, and isn’t, included.
-We have already used SPW construction again to cut down a tall palm tree in a small courtyard that was leaning precariously. The tree surgeon used was highly skilled and the work was carefully executed without even a cracked floor tile. We will be considering SPW construction for future work and have already asked Scott to quote for some roof repairs and outside work.
Contact SPW on 622 938 440. (SPW contact info can also be seen everyday in the Sponsor’s Section of DigameXtra)

MONKEYPOX

Health confirms 142 positive cases of monkey pox in Spain: {Translation} -The Ministry of Health has confirmed on Tuesday 142 cases of orthopoxvirus as positive cases of monkeypox; these are 10 more cases than those reported on Tuesday by the laboratory of the National Microbiology Centre of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII). (No explanation for the discrepancy provided. -Ed.)
-To date, the ISCIII has received samples belonging to 302 suspected cases of Monkeypox, or monkeypox, which means 5 new suspicions since Tuesday. Meanwhile, after review of some samples, 160 cases have tested negative for human smallpox and other orthopoxviruses, and are therefore ruled out as cases.

SPAIN

Spain’s anti-crisis plan is to be extended for a further three months: These measures include a 20 céntimo discount on each litre of fuel and a ban on companies who receive direct assistance laying off staff because of increased energy costs, among others. Landlords will still be restricted when it comes to annual rent reviews, there is to be a 15 per cent increase in the mínimum living income and the discounts on electricity bills which benefit 1.9m low-income households will also continue. The Opium Vampires- Touring Spain’s poppy fields in search of a high: –Travelers from all over Europe are coming to the banks of the Tagus River to extract the morphine-rich latex from ‘Papaver somniferum,’ a plant widely cultivated for medicinal purposes.
-Spain is the world’s largest producer of opium and poppy straw from Papaver somniferum, with 113 tons of morphine equivalent per year, well ahead of France and Australia (75 tons each), Turkey (69) and India (27), according to United Nations data. Since 1986, a private company named Alcaliber has been the only one authorized by Spain’s Ministry of Health to control crops in Spain and manufacture these opium-derived drugs, essential in hospitals to treat severe pain.
-The exact location of the 528 legal poppy fields is secret, but in the springtime it is impossible to hide those 11,000 hectares dotted with white poppies that exist in Spain, according to data from the Health Ministry. A caravan of consumers and dealers from all over Europe can be seen traipsing through the country these days in search of “the flower of laziness,” as the poet Pablo Neruda called it. The banks of the Tagus River are one of their favorite destinations. MALAGA

Noise in Malaga- Guitars and loudspeakers seized and 31 people reported in one week (22 for singing or shouting in public!): {Translation} In the last week, the Malaga Local Police have reported 31 people in the city centre for making noise in the street and, therefore, disturbing the rest of the neighbours. In addition, five musical instruments, mainly loudspeakers and guitars, have been seized.
-Thus, from 23 to 30 May, more than 500 actions were carried out in relation to compliance with the measures set out in the regulations on noise prevention and control, on public establishments located in the historic centre, as well as compliance with the municipal measures that guarantee citizen coexistence and the protection of public space. These actions are in addition to the special weekend measures (Friday and Saturday nights).
-The 31 people were reported for noise-generating activities causing a nuisance (4); producing noise inside the home (2); for unauthorised musical performances (1); for operating radio sets or musical instruments without authorisation and after hours (2); and for singing or shouting on the public highway and in public areas (22). The Police warn of a rebound in Malaga of scams with mass mailings of fraudulent messages supposedly from banking entities: {Translation} The National Police in Malaga has warned this Wednesday of an upturn in a well-known virtual attack that comes through mass emailings of messages to customers of banking institutions. It is known as ‘smishing’, a criminal modality where victims are asked to enter or provide their credentials by criminals pretending to be their bank.
-The key thing: never click on any link you receive without first checking where it comes from. Reversing the initiative is the fundamental key, i.e. never follow the instructions of any message, communication or phone call you receive in which a problem with your bank account is reported.
-“You must immediately contact the staff of your bank to verify the info requests before proceeding”, added the Provincial Police Station of the National Police. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/Policia-alerta-Malaga-estafas-mensajes-entidades-bancarias_0_1688832481.html

Sex Pistols aim to give queen’s jubilee a touch of punk: In Britain, there are several traditional elements to a royal anniversary: pageants, street parties, the Sex Pistols.
Queen Elizabeth II and the Pistols have been linked since the punk pioneers released the song “God Save the Queen” during the 1977 Silver Jubilee that marked the monarch’s 25 years on the throne.
The anti-authoritarian anthem – not to be confused with the actual British national anthem of the same name – has been re-released for Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, or 70 years as queen. It’s one of a raft of cultural tie-ins – critics might say cash-ins spurred by the royal milestone. Photo:AP. HEALTH

New storage technique could vastly expand the number of livers available for transplant: A patient who received a donated liver that had been stored for three days in a new type of machine that mimics the human body is healthy one year on from surgery, according to a study in Nature Biotechnology. The technology could significantly increase the number of livers suitable for transplant, the authors claim, both by enabling donor livers to be preserved for longer than the current standard and by making it possible to repair organs that are available but too damaged to transplant as is.
-Once removed from their donor, livers are usually stored on ice for a maximum of 12 hours to prevent the cells from being damaged by the cold, which would decrease the chances of a successful transplant. This narrow window makes it difficult to match organs to people needing a donor liver, meaning many patients die before one can be found.
-Although further research is required, the team believes the new technique could allow donor livers to be stored safely for up to 12 days before transplantation.

Cancel Culture Fail- ‘The jury gave me my life back.’ Johnny Depp celebrates in the UK as he wins defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard and walks away with $8.35M in damages: Johnny Depp won all three counts of his bombshell defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard on Wednesday after a Virginia jury substantiated the claim that his ex-wife sullied his reputation and damaged his career when she wrote about becoming a “public figure representing domestic abuse” following the couple’s split.
-The panel of seven in Fairfax awarded the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star a total of $10.35 million, including $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages, after deliberating for about 13 hours.
-The judge reduced the punitive damages to the Virginia maximum of $350,000 so Johnny will now only receive $8.35million in total after paying Heard $2million.
-Depp was not present as he was in the UK on tour with guitar legend Jeff Beck – a source claimed it was due to ‘previously scheduled work commitments’
-The actress did win her second of three counts in her counterclaim against her ex-husband, with the jury finding that his attorney Adam Waldman did defame her when he told the Daily Mail she set up Depp in a hoax when the police came to their apartment in May 2016. The jury found she should be awarded $2 million in compensatory damages and zero in punitive damages.

The Board confirms the second case of monkey pox in Malaga: {Translation} May 31, 2022 13:39

According to the health administration, following the results of the National Microbiology Centre, Andalusia has five confirmed cases of monkeypox as of 31 May: two in Malaga, a couple in Seville and one in Cadiz.

SPAIN

The Rolling Stones return to Spain: The Sixty Tour, which begins this Wednesday, June 1, in the capital, in the Wanda Metropolitano of the Atléticos. Those who will take the stage at the Wanda therefore are Mick Jagger (78 years old), Keith Richards (78 years old) and Ronnie Wood (74 years old). It’s the first time they’ve toured without their fourth member and they promised it would be the last: “We’re going to give all our energy, after all it’s the last tour,” Jagger said in an interview with Esquire.
Their Satanic Majesties landed this Monday in Madrid and were far from secluded in their hotel. Some privileged walkers of the Retreat ran into its three members in front of the fallen angel statue, one of the few pieces that represent Lucifer in the world. Later, they enjoyed a flamenco evening and dined at a restaurant on Calle Almagro – where Jagger spent 60 euros and left a tip of 200, according to the maitre. The increase in the price of flats triples that of wages:
-In the last five years, homes for sale have become more expensive by 15.6%, while the remuneration of workers has increased by only 5.9%.
-Wages and prices no longer go hand in hand, but rather are moving further and further apart, which is causing a strong loss of purchasing power for workers this year, who are suffering from 8.7% inflation. This imbalance is also transferred to housing, which causes a significant blow to domestic economies, which have to make a greater effort to face the purchase of a house. -Thus, flats for sale are also starring in this escalation rally and in the last five years they have become more expensive by 15.6%, while the remuneration of Spaniards has only increased by 5.9%. In other words, housing has risen practically three times higher than prices in the last five years, according to the study ‘Relationship of salaries and the purchase of housing in 2021’ published this Tuesday with data from Fotocasa and Infojobs.

It later said it would also stop as of June 1 gas flows to Denmark’s Orsted and to Shell Energy for its contract on gas supplies to Germany, after both failed to make payments in roubles. Greece Extends 80km Wall at Turkish Border to Prevent Migrants From Crossing Into Europe: Due to fears of a surge of migrants reaching the country from the border with Turkey and amid high tensions between Athens and Ankara, the Greek Government wants to add another 80 km to its 35 km concrete wall on this border. On Sunday, May 29, Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis said the extended wall would prevent movement in the regions that could otherwise be crossed on foot.
-Both Greece and Turkey are NATO members and have for a long time had strained relations due to the issue of migrants.
-Due to such relations, only recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis no longer exists for him and thus ruled out any dialogue between the two governments in this regard. Full article:

Hundreds of sarcophagi and statues unearthed in an Egyptian necropolis: A team of archaeologists have unearthed in the Saqqara necropolis 250 painted wooden sarcophagi and a bronze chest with 150 statues, also in bronze, of ancient Egyptian deities some 2,500 years old. The statues represent the ancient Egyptian deities Bastet, Anubis, Osiris, Amunmeen, Isis, Nefertum, and Hathor, as well as instruments used during Isis rituals, such as the Sistrum. A beautifully carved headless statue of the engineer Imhotep was also discovered. A collection of Late Period painted intact wooden sarcophagi with mummies inside burial pits was also unearthed along with amulets, wooden boxes and statues with gilt faces. Man disguised as old woman throws cake at the Mona Lisa: A man seemingly disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum and shouted at people to think of planet Earth.
-Videos posted on social media appear to show a young man in a wig and lipstick who had arrived in a wheelchair. The man, whose identity was unknown, was also seen throwing roses in the museum gallery on Sunday.
-The cake attack left a conspicuous white creamy smear on the glass but the famous work by Leonardo da Vinci wasn’t damaged. Photo:Reuters. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/culture/20220530-man-disguised-in-wig-throws-cake-at-glass-protecting-the-mona-lisa

-22nd – Day trip to Cadiz with Guide €35pp. Cádiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, with archaeological remains dating to the 12th century BC, was founded by the Phoenicians. It has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. It is also the site of the University of Cádiz.
Situated on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea‚ Cádiz is, in most respects, a typically Andalusian city with well-preserved historical landmarks. The older part of Cádiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town (Spanish: Casco Antiguo). It is characterized by the antiquity of its various quarters (barrios), among them El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City’s street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cádiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings. In addition, the city is dotted with numerous parks where exotic plants flourish, including giant trees allegedly brought to Spain by Columbus from the New World
-29th – Trip to the Biopark in Fuengirola €30pp TBC includes entry to the park

Bio Beach Restaurant- El Morche:
As mentioned last week, I wonder how many Digamites are familiar with Poké. No, not Pokémon, totally unrelated, but both are very popular in certain circles! Poké, (pronounced poh-keh not poke-ee), is a classic chopped raw fish salad, first created in the late 1970’s by Hawaiian fishermen. It started as a quick and easy fishermen’s ‘’fast food’’ but it soon grew to global proportions, so much so that you can find a Poké chain of restaurants with very appreciative customers. In Bio Beach, you can select one of three choices of marinated fish (not raw), salmon, tuna and shrimp. The staff will not mind if you like to switch things around. For example, my favourite combination is the cold salmon with a base of warm quinoa, cool crunchy cucumbers, creamy avocadoes and sweet ripe tomatoes. The menu will present all the specifics! And check the rest of the menu, it is full of tasty surprises and delicious food combinations. Bio Beach offers you some of the best food, company and vistas in La Costa del Sol. Watch this space and we’ll introduce you to Poke next time. Happy Munching! The staff is professional, friendly and make you feel totally at home! Tell them DigameXtra sent you there!
The Bio Beach lectures are taking a pause for the summer. We will resume in September with a food presentation on Wed. Sept. 14th at 11am. These programmes are free, just order refreshments. We belong to U3A, (http://www.u3aaxarquia.com/) and these programmes are presented in an effort to attract more members. Bio Beach Restaurant is located on the El Morche beachfront promenade right behind the church. We look forward to see you there! For more info contact norma2kk@aol.com

MALAGA

Gluten-free cuisine of Málaga- “A loaf of bread with gluten costs 70 cents and for people with celiac disease three euros”: {Translation, summary}
-“A gluten-free sponge cake can cost five euros and with gluten it costs only one euro”. The same goes for bread, which “a loaf of bread with gluten can cost 70 cents and a packet of bread for coeliacs costs three euros”, says Marta Rodríguez, who has suffered from coeliac disease since she was 12 years old. On the other hand, Lucía Román, who has had coeliac condition for some years now, assures us that “there is an increasing variety of products”.
-In Malaga, you can find El Pastelero Real, an establishment that has been selling gluten-free products since the end of 2016. Its owner confirms that the price of items for coeliacs is much higher than those containing gluten, “a kilo of normal flour can cost around 40 cents, a kilo of gluten-free flour costs around four and a half euros”. This means that the bakery does not have much margin with the final price of the product, but they are confident that “if things are done well in the end, people will come back”.
-On the other hand, Nanci, owner of Vida Libre de Gluten (pic), where she prepares Argentinian empanadas, pizzas, hamburgers and desserts, says that “sometimes it is difficult to get the ingredients at an affordable price”. But she also guarantees that within her menu, the difference in cost between gluten-free and gluten-free products is minimal, as she considers that the dishes she prepares in a normal establishment “usually cost 10% less, so there is some difference, but not that much”. UK

No deal reached yet for UK driving licence holders to swap to a Spanish permit:
-No agreement has been reached between the British and Spanish governments to allow people living in Spain who hold UK driving licences to swap to a Spanish one without taking a test.
-Since 30 April, when a grace period for using UK licences after Brexit ended, expats who were unable to swap to a Spanish licence before Brexit, or who came later and have been living in Spain for more than six months, have had to stop driving. The alternative is to pay and prepare for theory and practical driving tests – for which there are few appointments in some areas.
-Sources have said the sticking point between the UK and Spain on a simpler swap deal, which Spain has in place with many other countries, is that Spain also wants real-time access to the UK’s data on who owns vehicles with British number plates when they are stopped in Spain. Incredible Discovery Beneath the Southern Amazon Reveals Urban-Agrarian Society Never Seen Before: A paper published this week in “Nature” reveals that down in an alluvial plane in Bolivia’s Llanos de Mojos savannah in southwest Amazonia, flourished an agrarian low-density urban society for 900 years, building hundreds of acres of monumental earthworks, canals, walls and fortifications, and large pyramids. The Casarabe culture transformed and lived off the land in way few archeologists and historians believed possible for the Amazon. Image:Heiko Prümers. Covid Andalucia- Andalusia enters “very pronounced downward” Covid-19 incidence phase: {Translation} 27/05/2022 13:53
-The Andalusian Regional Minister for Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, said on Friday that the region is on a “very marked downward” trend in the incidence of the coronavirus.
-The minister said that as of today Andalusia has 691 hospitalised patients, which is “90 less than last Tuesday”.
-In addition, there are 40 people in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the cumulative incidence is 467 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the age of 60, when the “average for Spain is 800 cases”.
-The minister stressed that the incidence in Andalusia is the “lowest of all the autonomous communities”, which is why he considered that “something is being done” in the region, which has “very good figures”.
-He stressed that the “weakest link, such as the residences”, are increasingly “free of covid” and more than “85 percent” of the 1,107 existing in Andalusia do not register any cases, which means that these figures “call for hope”, he concluded. TECH

Stalkerware- A Face Search Engine Anyone Can Use Is Alarmingly Accurate: You have just lost another serious degree of privacy. For $29.99 a month, a website called PimEyes offers a potentially dangerous superpower from the world of science fiction: the ability to search for a face, finding obscure photos that would otherwise have been as safe as the proverbial needle in the vast digital haystack of the internet.
-A search takes mere seconds. You upload a photo of a face, check a box agreeing to the terms of service and then get a grid of photos of faces deemed similar, with links to where they appear on the internet.
– The New York Times used PimEyes on the faces of a dozen Times journalists, with their consent, to test its powers. PimEyes found photos of every person, some that the journalists had never seen before, even when they were wearing sunglasses or a mask, or their face was turned away from the camera, in the image used to conduct the search.
-PimEyes found one reporter dancing at an art museum event a decade ago, and crying after being proposed to, a photo that she didn’t particularly like but that the photographer had decided to use to advertise his business on Yelp. A tech reporter’s younger self was spotted in an awkward crush of fans at the Coachella music festival in 2011. A foreign correspondent appeared in countless wedding photos, evidently the life of every party, and in the blurry background of a photo taken of someone else at a Greek airport in 2019. A journalist’s past life in a rock band was unearthed, as was another’s preferred summer camp getaway.
