Recommendation for SPW Construction: Scott and his team have recently completed a large redecoration and partial refurbishment project in our old olive mill and we are pleased with the results. Scott has a team of general builders and knows when to call in expert specialists, of whom he has a wide network. He is also not afraid to say when when he is not able to do something – though this was rare!
-The project involved damp treatment and repalstering of two walls, installing additional electric sockets, moving a radiator, treating and protecting 60+ beams and repainting the sitting room, dining area and mezzanine study. The sitting room is a large space with very high ceilings that is fairly similar to a British barn. The necessary equipment and insurances were in place to carry put the work well and keep everyone safe. The workmen were all very tidy and cleaned up thoroughly every day. The work was also carried out with generally good humour during the difficult weather conditions during with the ‘mud rain’. Additional work requested after the job had started was also accommodated at reasonable cost. As with all such work, it would be helpful to keep written agreement of the details of what is, and isn’t, included.
-We have already used SPW construction again to cut down a tall palm tree in a small courtyard that was leaning precariously. The tree surgeon used was highly skilled and the work was carefully executed without even a cracked floor tile. We will be considering SPW construction for future work and have already asked Scott to quote for some roof repairs and outside work.

The Opium Vampires- Touring Spain’s poppy fields in search of a high: –Travelers from all over Europe are coming to the banks of the Tagus River to extract the morphine-rich latex from ‘Papaver somniferum,’ a plant widely cultivated for medicinal purposes.
-Spain is the world’s largest producer of opium and poppy straw from Papaver somniferum, with 113 tons of morphine equivalent per year, well ahead of France and Australia (75 tons each), Turkey (69) and India (27), according to United Nations data. Since 1986, a private company named Alcaliber has been the only one authorized by Spain’s Ministry of Health to control crops in Spain and manufacture these opium-derived drugs, essential in hospitals to treat severe pain.
-The exact location of the 528 legal poppy fields is secret, but in the springtime it is impossible to hide those 11,000 hectares dotted with white poppies that exist in Spain, according to data from the Health Ministry. Noise in Malaga- Guitars and loudspeakers seized and 31 people reported in one week (22 for singing or shouting in public!): {Translation} In the last week, the Malaga Local Police have reported 31 people in the city centre for making noise in the street and, therefore, disturbing the rest of the neighbours. In addition, five musical instruments, mainly loudspeakers and guitars, have been seized.

The Police warn of a rebound in Malaga of scams with mass mailings of fraudulent messages supposedly from banking entities: {Translation} The 
National Police in Malaga has warned this Wednesday of an upturn in a well-known virtual attack that comes through mass emailings of messages to customers of banking institutions. It is known as ‘smishing’, a criminal modality where victims are asked to enter or provide their credentials by criminals pretending to be their bank.

New storage technique could vastly expand the number of livers available for transplant: A patient who received a donated liver that had been stored for three days in a new type of machine that mimics the human body is healthy one year on from surgery, according to a study in Nature Biotechnology. The technology could significantly increase the number of livers suitable for transplant, the authors claim, both by enabling donor livers to be preserved for longer than the current standard and by making it possible to repair organs that are available but too damaged to transplant as is.
-Once removed from their donor, livers are usually stored on ice for a maximum of 12 hours to prevent the cells from being damaged by the cold, which would decrease the chances of a successful transplant. This narrow window makes it difficult to match organs to people needing a donor liver, meaning many patients die before one can be found.
-Although further research is required, the team believes the new technique could allow donor livers to be stored safely for up to 12 days before transplantation.

-The panel of seven in Fairfax awarded the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star a total of $10.35 million, including $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages, after deliberating for about 13 hours.
-The judge reduced the punitive damages to the Virginia maximum of $350,000 so Johnny will now only receive $8.35million in total after paying Heard $2million.
-Depp was not present as he was in the UK on tour with guitar legend Jeff Beck – a source claimed it was due to ‘previously scheduled work commitments’
-The actress did win her second of three counts in her counterclaim against her ex-husband, with the jury finding that his attorney Adam Waldman did defame her when he told the Daily Mail she set up Depp in a hoax when the police came to their apartment in May 2016. The jury found she should be awarded $2 million in compensatory damages and zero in punitive damages.
