-22nd – Day trip to Cadiz with Guide €35pp. Cádiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, with archaeological remains dating to the 12th century BC, was founded by the Phoenicians. It has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. It is also the site of the University of Cádiz.
Situated on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea‚ Cádiz is, in most respects, a typically Andalusian city with well-preserved historical landmarks. The older part of Cádiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town (Spanish: Casco Antiguo). It is characterized by the antiquity of its various quarters (barrios), among them El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City’s street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cádiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings. In addition, the city is dotted with numerous parks where exotic plants flourish, including giant trees allegedly brought to Spain by Columbus from the New World
-29th – Trip to the Biopark in Fuengirola €30pp TBC includes entry to the park

Bio Beach Restaurant- El Morche:
As mentioned last week, I wonder how many Digamites are familiar with Poké. No, not Pokémon, totally unrelated, but both are very popular in certain circles! Poké, (pronounced poh-keh not poke-ee), is a classic chopped raw fish salad, first created in the late 1970’s by Hawaiian fishermen. It started as a quick and easy fishermen’s ‘’fast food’’ but it soon grew to global proportions, so much so that you can find a Poké chain of restaurants with very appreciative customers. In Bio Beach, you can select one of three choices of marinated fish (not raw), salmon, tuna and shrimp. The staff will not mind if you like to switch things around. For example, my favourite combination is the cold salmon with a base of warm quinoa, cool crunchy cucumbers, creamy avocadoes and sweet ripe tomatoes. The menu will present all the specifics! And check the rest of the menu, it is full of tasty surprises and delicious food combinations. Bio Beach offers you some of the best food, company and vistas in La Costa del Sol. Watch this space and we’ll introduce you to Poke next time. Happy Munching! The staff is professional, friendly and make you feel totally at home! Tell them DigameXtra sent you there!
The Bio Beach lectures are taking a pause for the summer. We will resume in September with a food presentation on Wed. Sept. 14th at 11am. These programmes are free, just order refreshments. We belong to U3A, (http://www.u3aaxarquia.com/) and these programmes are presented in an effort to attract more members. Bio Beach Restaurant is located on the El Morche beachfront promenade right behind the church. We look forward to see you there! For more info contact norma2kk@aol.com

MALAGA
Gluten-free cuisine of Málaga- “A loaf of bread with gluten costs 70 cents and for people with celiac disease three euros”: {Translation, summary}
-“A gluten-free sponge cake can cost five euros and with gluten it costs only one euro”. The same goes for bread, which “a loaf of bread with gluten can cost 70 cents and a packet of bread for coeliacs costs three euros”, says Marta Rodríguez, who has suffered from coeliac disease since she was 12 years old. On the other hand, Lucía Román, who has had coeliac condition for some years now, assures us that “there is an increasing variety of products”.
-In Malaga, you can find El Pastelero Real, an establishment that has been selling gluten-free products since the end of 2016. Its owner confirms that the price of items for coeliacs is much higher than those containing gluten, “a kilo of normal flour can cost around 40 cents, a kilo of gluten-free flour costs around four and a half euros”. This means that the bakery does not have much margin with the final price of the product, but they are confident that “if things are done well in the end, people will come back”.
-On the other hand, Nanci, owner of Vida Libre de Gluten (pic), where she prepares Argentinian empanadas, pizzas, hamburgers and desserts, says that “sometimes it is difficult to get the ingredients at an affordable price”. But she also guarantees that within her menu, the difference in cost between gluten-free and gluten-free products is minimal, as she considers that the dishes she prepares in a normal establishment “usually cost 10% less, so there is some difference, but not that much”. UK
No deal reached yet for UK driving licence holders to swap to a Spanish permit:
-No agreement has been reached between the British and Spanish governments to allow people living in Spain who hold UK driving licences to swap to a Spanish one without taking a test.-Since 30 April, when a grace period for using UK licences after Brexit ended, expats who were unable to swap to a Spanish licence before Brexit, or who came later and have been living in Spain for more than six months, have had to stop driving. The alternative is to pay and prepare for theory and practical driving tests – for which there are few appointments in some areas.
-Sources have said the sticking point between the UK and Spain on a simpler swap deal, which Spain has in place with many other countries, is that Spain also wants real-time access to the UK’s data on who owns vehicles with British number plates when they are stopped in Spain. Boris Johnson ‘will announce return of imperial measurements to mark Queen’s Platinum Jubilee’: Shops could soon be allowed to sell products in pounds and ounces after UK’s break from EU. The EU weights and measures directive came into force in 2000, with traders legally required to use metric units for sale-by-weight or the measure of fresh produce. Pint glasses will also be adorned with a Crown for the first time in nearly 20 years after Ministers axed EU rules banning the patriotic symbol. Incredible Discovery Beneath the Southern Amazon Reveals Urban-Agrarian Society Never Seen Before: A paper published this week in “Nature” reveals that down in an alluvial plane in Bolivia’s Llanos de Mojos savannah in southwest Amazonia, flourished an agrarian low-density urban society for 900 years, building hundreds of acres of monumental earthworks, canals, walls and fortifications, and large pyramids. The Casarabe culture transformed and lived off the land in way few archeologists and historians believed possible for the Amazon. Image:Heiko Prümers.
