DoctorLaptop’s Health Update for Clients and Friends
As you may be aware I am ill and anticipating foot surgery, with vascular disease in my right foot and related ailments. I have had to limit the type of repairs I can do to laptop Clean&Tuneups or setting up new systems on laptops. 1 or 2 jobs a week would be good, as those I can do from my recliner with my leg up, and no walking is required. My ability to walk is very limited and its very painful, even with crutches. I still require cash for the meds and basic survival and dog food, so these jobs are appreciated.

Recommendation Needed- Gestor

Can anyone recommend a good Gestor in this area (Torrox, Nerja, Torre del Mar, Velez Malaga) who speaks very good English and understands Spanish and British taxes because the one we have seems to be getting our taxes higher and my Spanish pension lower every year.

Many even stay and choose lunch from the varied menu available.

Warning re Turkeys

I would like to issue a timely reminder to all fellow digamites to check thoroughly the small print on any packaged turkey.  My family’s Christmas dinner was ruined by a ‘Fresh Turkey’ bought from Mercadona  which was infused with garlic and other flavourings.  I had not noticed it as it was just in the small list of ingredients on the back of the bag.  Off to the butcher this year for an unadulterated bird

Do any readers know if Endesa and The Ayuntamiento can legally take money from your bank account without authorization, or is ‘just the Spanish way?’

Like George I too was wondering about this alternative to Endesa so if anybody has gone ‘over’ to them perhaps they could share their experience, good or bad, with the rest of us on Digamextra.

Services Needed- House Sitters throughout the Year

We are a retired couple that rent the upper part of a house with large terrace above as well. This is located at the beginning of the village of Venta Baja 15 minutes inland of Velez Malaga. The bus service is poor to the coast (Torre Del Mar) For shops/resturants/butchers/bars just a five minute walk.

We are looking for house sitters when we go away in our Motorhome for a minimum of a month at a time to Portugal. We are very flexible and can be away at times to suit house sitters.

We pay rent all year to include water and electric so you only need pay your food etc.

Our back garden is fully enclosed with a 400 mtr orange etc orchard. There is a double gate secure entry for secure parking with a very large terrace with barbecue. There is one flight of stairs to the apartment from front entry. This has three bedrooms but converted to two doubles and the smaller third one now a second lounge with Spanish TV. The second bedroom has an old TV with German TV. Our main bedroom we prefer to lock when away. Main lounge has IPTV for English TV and a very good WiFi system throughout apartment. Main lounge also has air conditioning which is also for heating.  Mobile electric radiators also if needed. A large bathroom with shower over bath and also houses the washing machine. The kitchen has all that you would need including freezer. Dish washer is on our terrace.

We have a dog that we take away with us. On our upper terrace is a large cage with six Love Birds. These need water changing every two days also food topping up the same, but not let out !

Services Needed-Ryanair Bookings Problem–anyone else ?

I have used Ryanair successfully for some years. I have flights booked with them at the moment. I downloaded our outward boarding passes (from Malaga airport) two weeks ago without any fuss, but now I want to download those for the return leg there’s a problem.

Although every other website is working, Ryanair.com will not open for me. I know it’s working in Estepona and in the UK.

I have tried by laptop and by phone, no joy. We use Orange, and are in the Torre Del Mar area.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it Ryanair or Orange (or me)? If anyone can offer any non technical advice or information, would be grateful!

Thank you to everyone who came along and visited our Christmas Stall on Saturday, inside Sugar and Spice.    Although, due to the weather,  we had fewer visitors than previous years, we beat all stall records and raised 304.00 euros.  Remember that 75centimos of every euro raised, goes direct to patient care.

Brian Kirk won our Numbers board and generously donated his win back to Cudeca, and Dale Stansfield won the hamper. He also kindly donated this back to another Cudeca fund raising event.

L.S. Lowry is one of Britain’s most popular artists and yet the very familiarity of his work has stopped us looking as closely as we should at this extraordinary artist. Well-known for painting the mills of the industrial north-west, he is perhaps also one of the greatest painters of the human condition himself –  he has been called the ‘T.S. Eliot of modern British art’.

The lecturer Michael Howard is Programme Leader of the MA in Visual Culture at the School of Contemporary Art History at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he teaches both academic and studio-based students. He is also President of Bolton NADFAS and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. As well as being an art historian, he is a practising painter, printmaker and ceramicist.

Michael’s has published many books, including L. S. Lowry: A Visionary Artist, Van Gogh, Monet and Cézanne. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy and represented the UK at the 2006 Varna Art Biennale.

PAD Animal Rescue flooded- Help Desperately Needed Please

Some of you will be aware that PAD animal rescue was flooded in the heavy rain when the nearby river burst its banks near Miramar Centre in Fuengirola. Thanks to the brave volunteers the animals were taken to safety. One dog escaped and is still missing.

However everything-just everything-has been destroyed. Food, bedding the lot. A clean up operation begins Tuesday if anyone could volunteer as help desperately needed.

A lot of the volunteers lost personal belongings inc phones etc.

APA Estacion Esperanza nerja is having a collection of bedding, food-anything that could be used to keep the animals warm. Please contact Laura leanne Downes at Nerja Property Services, 5 Av Castilla Perez Nerja, or Jackie Downes in Nerja Household Centre located opposite Nerja property Services.

The one no no is a lot of external steps to reach the accommodation.

Home required for Lino.

Lino is a 2 year old, healthy and medium size dog. He is a good boy in his cage, he does not get in trouble with any other dogs, he is also a playful, clever and sensitive dog. With people Lino is a lovely boy, he is very affectionate and obedient, and he can be very comfortable to go for a walk with, as long as you dedicate him a little play time, you will take home the most calm dog in the world. Lino arrived at the shelter with his brother but he has now been adopted and Lino is alone now. At the beginning he was very sad, but now he is starting to forget him and play with other dogs.

He deserves at last a home, a family who loves him and takes care of him.

Services-In reply to the reply to request for advice: Electricity
The outage he mentions first is the usual Endesa  outage for which there is no solution except that my advice would be to install standby lights that come on automatically in the event of a power failure and then go off when the power returns. The inbuilt batteries then recharge. We have installed UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems on both computers and on the TV. These contain batteries to give up to 30 minutes of power if the power fails and also removes spikes and switches in if the voltage goes above or below a pre-set figure.

The second scenario is more difficult to diagnose but there is an earth leakage somewhere on the circuit that has tripped ~ often this is due to water in the cables somewhere. Check that your outside lights are off during rain and see if the problem persists. If the main circuit breaker trips you need to switch all the MCB (miniature circuit breakers) off, switch the master on and gradually switch the MCB back on until you find one that trips the system. That circuit breaker then feeds the “faulty” equipment or cable.
To solve this remove all equipment from their sockets and try again. It could be a faulty RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) or you may wish to install a self setting device that tries several times to reset the RCCB and does so unless the earth leakage persists.

Contact Oscar who is very knowledgeable electrician who will check your system out.  We have used him to install both a High Voltage Surge Protector (as required by most Home Insurance Companies) and also a self setting RCCB. He speaks English and is very helpful.

Coral Internacional Axarquía from Vélez-Málaga will be performing in two concerts this month.

The first is the Coral Internacional Axarquía Christmas concert which will be held at San Francisco church in Vélez-Málaga on Saturday 10th December at 8pm.

The second concert is at the invitation of Coral El Castillo from Rincón de la Victoria and is at the church in La Cala del Moral on Saturday 17th December at 8pm.

Services Available– Explanation of power cuts.

Though I do think this has been covered in past posts on Digamextra.

My original thoughts would have been first port of call would be telephone an electrician. Unless D.I.Y

Moving forward!!

The first outage could be a general power cut from electric company. Or a loose connection. You could ask the other tenants in apartment block if they have same problem as it is likely one of them will have same problem if shared phase supply.

The other switch I am presuming is the RCCD (residual circuit current device). If you are having nuisance tripping it could be a faulty Rccd

Over sensitive and can be tested for time perimeters with a meter all electricians should have. Pressing the test button does not mean its operation is correct it means it is not jammed.  If the rccd is satisfactory it is serving you well protecting  life, injury and property from fire.

An example: Appliance breaking down with fault neutral to earth.

Fridge / Freezer, washing machine, electric hob, oven elements, water heater.

from my experience the first thing I would look at , if you have a water heater and have access look to see if there are any signs of water marks in the cover housing. Slight seeping of water would indicate element corrosion in the housing and moisture over the connection will cause tripping. Remove power to water heater first via local isolation.

The list is endless and can at times be very time consuming if unlucky even after basic elimination but it is a start that some householders may wish to try.

If it cannot be resolved call an electrician. It is possible some wiring in the installation has a fault which can be visually inspected and tested with insulation test meter. I have known sockets to burn out caused by loose connections causing more heat transfer to connections.  especially this time of year as people are using more electric heaters that can overload circuits that may have been compromised by being bodged in the past by upgrading the circuit breaker to stop circuit breakers tripping, ignorant of the fact that  the cable in the installation is getting hotter and hotter to melting point that you cannot even pull a new cable in original conduit because it has stuck.

Enough said I am sure other sparks will share their horror stories. on this topic !!

Hope you don’t mind me taking this opportunity which I think is relevant. An observation after living here 9 years. That I have not seen any evidence of any agents be it holiday letting or estate agents or in the private sector requesting inspection or testing of business or dwelling for electrical safety inspection be it basic or comprehensive. It seems if its working it must be safe ?

To add that any reputable electrician is not there to inflate costs by adding work but to advise which course of action you may wish to take if safety is compromised.

Today I experienced a great opportunity to see or introduce you to Velez-Malaga …… it’s not just Eroski !!!
Every Friday at 10.30 am a “train” leaves from outside the Guadia Civil barracks in Avenida Vivar Tellez in Velez -Malaga for a (free) three hour trip to see the town and stop and call into several interesting historical destinations .

What’s on – Christmas Fayre & Mrs Miggins home bake sale Wednesday 14th December

Christmas is coming and preparations are in hand for The Phoenix Club’s Christmas Fayre at La Vega Bar Restaurant.  Orders now being taken for Christmas cakes (made with real butter) Christmas puddings and mince pies.  We have large and small Christmas cakes, iced or un-iced.  We have our usual fare on offer as well – Sticky Lemon Drizzle cakes, Coffee and Walnut Cake, whole or by the slice, Malt Loaf, Steak pies, chicken, leek and bacon pies, quiches, scones, cupcakes, pasties, sausage rolls, pakoras, curry puffs and curries.  Why not place an order so you won’t be disappointed?
We have small iced Xmas cakes, just enough for 2 from €8 a cake, all iced and marzipanned.
We have a bric-a-brac table with many bargains to be had including a new steam iron – too many to mention and Tombola, come and try your luck!

Next Trip to Gibraltar – 6th January 2017

The Phoenix Club are off on their next shopping trip to Gibraltar on Friday the 6^th January 2017 and we have a few seats still available.  We have pick ups at at the A1 Garden Centre, Torre del Mar bus station and finally at Algarrobo Lidl at 08.30.  The bus is parked in Morrison’s car park and we leave Gibraltar at 16.30.  Due to visa restrictions on entering Gibraltar, please advise if you are a non EU citizen when you book.  Also it is important to remember to bring with you your EHIC card, just in case, and passports are essential.  On the way to Gibraltar we stop to spend a penny and for coffee.

We would greatly appreciate if payment was made before the journey.

The price?  €12pp includes a €1 gratuity for the driver.  Children under 12 can join us for 1/2 price.   Still the best value on the coast!
Early booking is recommended if you like a particular place, as seat numbers are allocated on a first come, first served basis.  Plenty to see in Gibraltar apart from the shopping!

At 11am    Sue is giving a talk and demonstration on how to make her wonderfully wicked lotions and potions.

At 12noon  Tania will demonstrate her wonderful Playmais – fantastically creative for the kids and grand-kids                but also great for more adult projects. Decorate your own plant pots?

At 1pm     Lara is back! Suggestions for rosé wines, red wines and cava for Christmastime. With free tastings.

At 1,30pm  Jukebox Bandits. Live music – after wine and cava we’ll all be dancing around the Garden Centre.

At 2,30pm  Katie will show us how to make her fabulous chocolate. Drool. A sweet end to a sweet day.

Throughout the day tea, coffee and water will be free – as always.

To keep your strength up, a wedge of tortilla with beer/mulled wine for €2.

 

Worried about parking? Don´t. Our car park at garden centre level will be retained for those with poor mobility and for loading. Roadside parking, as always. And NEW – our overflow car park – just across the road on the big bend.

Poinsettias, Christmas trees, gift items, organic products, gift vouchers (if you don´t want to show a value, name a plant – eg. gift a David Austin rose, a Bramley apple tree, the book Mediterranean Garden Plants by Lorraine Cavanagh. New CAS Shop in Nerja

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has moved its charity shop to a newer, larger place in a better location in Nerja.  The new premises are located at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez on the corner of the main road into town that crosses the old bridge.  You pass Supersol and will find the charity store at the next round-a-bout next door to the Good Stuff Café.  The doors open for business on Monday, December 5th and the shop hours will be between 10am to 2pm, Monday through Saturday.  Come on by and pick up good quality second hand clothing and bric-a-brac at bargain prices and remember the proceeds go towards helping animals in need.

 

 

 

Re: Choir carol concert in Competa:

Yes sadly One Voice disbanded in the summer. However several of us are now singing with Coraxalia in Viñuela. There are a few Xmas concerts taking place in the area and we have been pushing for one in Competa.

But for various reasons it was confirmed yesterday that it’s not going to happen.

Hopefully it will be reinstated next year!  Lorna

 

 

Power Cuts Advice Please

Could any tech Digamites help please:

We have an apartment in Torrox Costa. Occasionally we get a power-cut.After a couple of minutes the power is restored.Sometimes,however we get a different sort of outage, whereby the the big black switch in the fuse is thrown and we have to flick back the switch to restore the power.

The former type of cut is OK but the latter could be a nuisance if we are not at home to throw the switch back. (fridge/freezer without power etc).

Can anyone explain the difference between the two types of outage and do we have a specific problem in the apartment?

A reply to Digame might be useful for other readers with similar problems.

Government raising Taxes On Alcohol, Cigarettes & Soft Drinks

Spain’s Finance Minister, Cristóbal Montoro, announced on Wednesday that the new government is to increase tax on alcohol, tobacco and sugary soft drinks. The government will also try to reduce the limit for cash payments of invoices from €2,500 to €1,000, require large companies to report receivables and expense payments in real-time in order to better control Value Added Tax (VAT), and increase revenues from corporation tax, reportedly by cutting allowable deductions. More details are likely to be provided on Friday following a cabinet meeting at which the tax increases and changes are set to be approved.

Kittens in Need of a Home 

Paul and George were born 22/9/16 so they are now just 10 weeks old. Their mum is tame but lived on the streets and gave birth in the garden of a kind person who was feeding her. That person looked after her and the kittens until the kittens were weaned then both mum and kittens went into foster homes.

The kittens are very tame and cuddly and will make very loving, playful pets.

Cat in Danger

Can anybody take the most beautiful ginger cat. He is currently living at a bin store on the Frigliana road he has been there for a week now. It is the 2nd set of bins on the left travelling North from the motorway junction to Frigliana. He isn’t feral just hungry and very sad. I am going back to UK on Thursday otherwise I would have him. You can get right up to him and stroke him so would be very easy to pick him up.

UK Pensions & Tax

There have been a number of posts explaining that Adrian should be declaring and paying Spanish tax on his UK State pension, but what has not been pointed out is that this could be to his considerable financial advantage.

Currently he will be paying at least 20% tax on his state pension which would be at least £1000pa. This is because, although the state pension never has tax deducted from the weekly/monthly payment, it is still taxable. If that is your only income the normal personal allowances would wipe out any tax. However if you have additional income such as a government pension, that pension would probably absorb your allowances and mean that you pay additional tax on your government pension to make up the tax now due on the state pension.

If you do it the correct way and declare your state pension in Spain, then you get a new set of Spanish tax allowances which are usually greater than the state pension, so you would pay no tax in Spain saving at least £1000pa.

This has always been the case, all that has changed is that you must now declare the amount of your government pension (which is still exempt from Spanish tax) but it “may” affect your tax bill in Spain. Whether it will make any difference depends on the amount of your state pension and whether you have any other income in addition to your state pension, such as a private pension.

It is worth noting that if you do not submit annual tax declarations, even if it results in a zero tax bill, you may find it difficult in the future to claim that you are tax resident. This can affect your ability to claim very significant tax exemptions on Capital Gains Tax on the sale of you home and also it can affect the amount of Inheritance Tax that your beneficiaries would pay.             Sid Smith

 

 

Location of El Morche

As I previously used to live in Torrox Costa I  was aware that many people were confused as to the actual location of El Morche, which is a sub-district of Torrox.  As I have now seen posts on Digame that have incorrectly given locations as El Morche, I thought it was wise to clarify this minor error.

El Morche runs from the Rio Güi to Arroyo del Manzano, that is from the border with Lagos (Vélez Málaga) to the bridge where the two unfinished apartment blocks on the beach are located.

Recommendation – Get your chimney ready for Santa!

We have a wood burner and hadn’t had the chimney swept since we bought the house 6 years ago.  So when our insurer reminded us that it was a condition of insurance that chimneys were regularly swept we had a look in Digamextra and , as usual, came up with a recommendation.

A super location. The restaurant has shaded terraces overlooking the lake and many customers sit and enjoy a coffee or a tapa and a drink and catch up with friends and acquaintances for a chat. Many even stay and choose lunch from the varied menu available.

Bar is open from 9.30am serving coffee/drinks/food.

Anyone selling anything must include the make and model number of the item.

Photos will only be published once.

Photos must be in  JPEG Format

Please do not send ads for property / real estate.

All formatting, pretty colours, bold, underlining, strange fonts etc are automatically removed.

Please – Don’t use all Block CAPITALS LIKE THIS or I may have to send it back for you to put into normal case (This is the way people normally write, with capital letters where appropriate – such as “I” and place names “Malaga”, makers’ names such as “Electrolux”,    days of the week “Monday”

You must include contact details, either an email address or a telephone number in the text. If you don’t I cannot publish it. Often I cannot “extract “your email address from the email, so repeat it please.

This is not a service for local companies to exploit.

The decision about what to publish is mine, if I don’t want to publish then I won’t.

About Photos and other attachments

If you want to send a picture please send it as an attachment to your email, in  JPEG format and try and keep the size down to around 200KB.

Please don’t send PDFs or Word documents.

Your email address must be quoted in this forrmat…I insert spaces within the address so that nasty software can’t steal their address for spam purposes – e,g, my address is correctly   janekirkspain@gmail,com

if it were a Contributor’s address I’d insert spaces thus –

janekirkspain @ gmail,com.

So all you do is remove those spaces before contacting a contributor. 

New Rules for Blog

The rules for Blogs have changed and it now means that I could face a fine if I publish any negative reviews of any person or company – even though it may be true or half true.
