SPAIN

Pedro Sánchez announces that the Government will propose to the EU this Tuesday to break the Association Agreement with Israel: {Trans., summary}
– Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced he will present in Brussels a proposal for the European Union to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel. He argued that Israel’s government violates international law and EU values, while stressing that Spain considers the Israeli people “friends”.
– Speaking at a campaign event in Andalucía, Sánchez condemned Prime Minister Netanyahu’s actions and described the Middle East war as a “huge mistake” causing thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and billions of euros in losses. He urged those responsible to end the conflict and called for Europe to act decisively.

Spain excluded from another major international policy meeting– this time a key military meeting in North Africa: {Trans., summary}
– This week, one of the most important combined military operations in North Africa, Flintlock 2026, began in the Libyan city of Sirte. Spain has been excluded from the operation due to its strained relations with Libya, compounded by Trump’s current displeasure with Spain’s military restrictions on US activities. Led by the United States, the operation aims to install commander Saddam Haftar as the leader of a unified army in a country divided in two since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi and which has endured a long civil war. The maneuvers will continue until May 1st, and the main novelty is precisely the joint participation of Tripoli and Benghazi.
– This meeting is significant. It will serve to improve international coordination, combat terrorism, enhance combat readiness, strengthen cooperation among African countries, and fight human trafficking networks. On this last point, Libya is a key territory, as many boats full of migrants depart from its shores bound for Italy. In a context of government-imposed immigration regulations, the Spanish intelligence sources consulted see the absence of the Spanish military as a “problem.”
– Spain’s absence– they were not invited, possibly due to US influence– is notable when compared to the panel of countries present at this year’s Flintlock exercises.
– In addition to the United States and the two Libyan factions, Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are participating on the European side.
– From the African continent, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Mauritania, Chad, Nigeria, Somalia, Angola, and Tanzania have also attended. On April 8, Massad Boulos, US President Donald Trump’s advisor for the Middle East and Africa, praised Libya’s “continued progress toward a unified national budget and its important role as the host of one of AFRICOM’s Flintlock 26 exercises.” Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/espana/espana-excluida-cita-militar-clave-norte-africa_2026041969e42f50b7e0a27eb99d2821.html

ANDALUCÍA

The pay gap of Andalusian MIR trainee doctors, new trainees get up to €213 less per month than the national average for the same work; the longer they stay, the larger the gap– after 4 years they annually receive €6,000 less than those in Catalonia: {Trans, summary}
– Andalucía has become the lowest paying region in Spain for resident doctors, with salaries consistently below the national average. First-year residents earn about €1,380 gross per month without on-call shifts, €67 less than the national average and €258 less than the highest in the Balearic Islands. Fifth-year residents face even greater disparities, with monthly pay €289 lower than in the Balearic Islands and over €500 less than in Catalonia.
– On-call shifts deepen the gap. An R1 in Andalucía receives €1,925 net with weekly on-call duties, compared with €2,407 in the Balearic Islands, a difference of €482. Hourly rates are also lower, with €14.07 on weekdays and €15.78 on holidays, far below the €19 to €21 paid elsewhere.
– Since 2009, salary increases in Andalucía have been minimal, only 18.4 percent, while inflation has exceeded 40 percent, eroding purchasing power. This stagnation has created a direct shortage of doctors, as many residents consider leaving Spain for better pay. With 8,000 residents finishing training in May-June, unions warn that without long-term contracts and improved conditions, Andalucía risks losing essential freshly trained medical staff to higher wages just as retirements needing replacement accelerate. TORROX

Power Substation Scandal Update- Torrox residents reactivate their criticism for the location of an electrical substation- the Town Hall let construction proceed without settling the objections!: {DigameXtra}
– The electricity substation near Torrox Park, operational since October, has become a source of deep concern for residents, who argue that its commissioning without full technical documentation poses a direct health threat. The Citizens’ Platform Against the Siting of the Facility stresses that electromagnetic field reports and compliance studies were never published, leaving the community uncertain about exposure risks. They insist this omission violates the right to environmental information and undermines public confidence.
– The Town Council had previously promised not to authorise the substation without complete safety guarantees. By permitting it to operate regardless, the Council is accused of breaking commitments and disregarding warnings from residents. The Platform demands independent measurements and external audits to verify emission levels, particularly given the facility’s proximity to homes and schools.
– Critics highlight that the Town Hall has allowed the site to run despite unresolved questions about legality. If the substation is later judged non-compliant, the decision to proceed will not only have wasted construction costs but also exposed thousands of residents to potential health risks. This approach is seen as reckless governance, prioritising completion over safety and transparency.
– The Platform denounces fragmented administrative processes that hinder oversight and calls for citizen monitoring mechanisms. Meanwhile, the Town Council, governed by the PP, continues to defend the facility, citing assurances from Endesa that emissions are “practically zero” outside the enclosure. Endesa reiterates that such infrastructure is subject to strict legal controls.
– Nevertheless, the Platform accuses Mayor Óscar Medina of failing to honour promises and provide requested information. They warn of legal action, framing the dispute as a matter of health, trust, and accountability. For residents of Torrox Park, the controversy is no longer abstract but a pressing question of safety in their daily lives. Refs: https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/vecinos-torrox-reactivan-criticas-ubicacion-subestacion-electrica-20260416122151-nt_amp.html & https://www.diariosur.es/axarquia/quejas-vecinales-torrox-nueva-subestacion-electrica-20251021143746-nt_amp.html

Some background regarding the previous article…

The Platform against the location of the Torrox Park substation denounces the Government’s “new deception” by excluding the undergrounding of electrical lines from the 2026 Budget: {Trans.}
– The Citizens’ Platform against the location of the Torrox Park electrical substation has expressed its outrage after learning that the central government has presented the General State Budgets for 2026 without including the allocation for burying the electrical lines promised to the families of CEIP El Faro, the other nearby educational centers and the affected residents.
– The group denounces that this fact adds to “a long list of unfulfilled promises” by Mayor Óscar Medina and his government team, including the change of location of the substation, the reports and prior measurements promised by the City Council and the lack of response from Urban Planning to the letters submitted by the residents.
– The Platform also criticizes recent statements by Endesa, which claims that the University of Malaga “is not qualified” to carry out measurements on the effects of high-voltage power lines. “This statement directly contradicts the mayor and his team, who for months boasted of the University of Malaga’s prestige as a guarantee of rigor and transparency,” the group points out.
– “How many more lies do we have to hear?” asks the Platform, which accuses the administrations of maintaining a “chain of deceptions, silences and broken promises” while the families of CEIP El Faro continue to live just meters away from high-voltage power lines, which they consider an “unacceptable” situation from the point of view of public health and urban planning .
– The citizens’ group concludes by reiterating that “health and safety must take precedence over any political calculations or business interests” and announces that it will continue its mobilizations and informational actions to demand transparency, accountability, and real solutions. {This article from November 2025 begs the question, where were the legal actions to halt operations pending independent test results, and where were the citizen mobilizations & actions, for the past 6 months, while the project was being completed and put into operation? This attitude of administrations where they do what ever they please and even lie about it (Andalucian Health/Services/Infrastructure/Public-Surveillance/Agenda2030 projects to name a few local examples), despite public challenges and lower court rulings, until they are forced by an upper court to stop, is tyrannical. Conservatives practicing Sanchismo, imagine that. The PP frequently deplores a style of government it calls sanchismo, “which it views as cynical, opportunistic and fixated on retaining power.” Yet here they are doing it themselves. Whenever these dubious projects are successfully challenged, and these projects and challenges come from both PSOE left or PP right depending on the locality, it was our public funds that were wasted by Sanchismaniacs of both parties. This portends very disappointing results in upcoming Andalucian elections, both major players are repugnant. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.diarioaxarco.es/l/la-plataforma-contra-la-subestacion-de-torrox-park-denuncia-el-nuevo-engano-del-gobierno-al-excluir-el-soterramiento-electrico-de-los-presupuestos-de-2026 & Sanchismo ref: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/14/will-spains-snap-election-usher-in-the-far-right-or-can-pedro-sanchez-gamble-pay-off

NERJA

Asphalt Plan in Nerja starts on Monday, April 20th: {Trans., summary}
– Next Monday, 20 April, work will begin on the Road Surfacing Plan, with an investment of 272,618.50 euros. The first section will be on the old N-340 road, in the area of the “Rapto de Europa” and the roundabout “Miguel Ángel Blanco. Victims of Terrorism”, as well as on Río Marina Street. This was announced by the mayor, José Alberto Armijo.
– From that day onwards, the scheduled works will be carried out consecutively. On Tuesday 21, work will take place on Antonio Jiménez Street; on Wednesday 22, on Jaén Street and Almirante Carranza Street; and on Friday 24, on Castilla Pérez Street.
– Subsequently, during the following week, the works will continue at the access roundabout to Nerja, located at the intersection of Puente Viejo Street and Antonio Ferrandis Chanquete Street, as well as on María Garralón “Julia” Street. FRIGILIANA

Rural Survellience Arrives– Frigiliana strengthens security in rural areas with the addition of a state-of-the-art drone: {Trans., summary}
– Frigiliana Town Council has strengthened rural safety with the purchase of a DJI Matrice 4T drone. The device, presented with local security forces and the Civil Guard of Nerja, is designed to improve surveillance of rural homes and subtropical crops. Mayor Alejandro Herrero emphasised the importance of advanced technology for protecting the countryside.
– The drone offers multisensor capacity, including intelligent detection, thermal camera, laser rangefinder and auxiliary light, enabling precise aerial surveillance even in low light. It can be deployed in 15 seconds, flies for up to 49 minutes and provides secure transmission. These features make it valuable for security, emergencies and search and rescue.
– The Council announced that the drone will be available to the Civil Guard from next week for urgent use. In its statement, the Council highlighted that the acquisition reinforces safety in rural homes and crops, representing a commitment to innovation and community protection.
{How much you want to bet this drone goes into regular use sniffing out marijuana & adormidera (opium poppy) gardens, as well as persuing non-criminal activities such as identifying illegal pools/tracks/buildings/etc, in efforts to boost town coffers with new income from fines? Sure, it will be handy searching for lost people or fires, but those are not common. It may even be used to observe burglars at remote sites as authorities suggest, although drone attendence relies on reports from the ground, not often available exactly because the victim-sites are secluded. The drone will not sit unused between such rare occasions. It will be out everyday, issuing fines and making money– until some kid with a slingshot decides to protect his ‘summer garden project’. -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/frigiliana-refuerza-la-seguridad-en-el-medio-rural-con-la-incorporacion-de-un-dron-de-ultima-generacion/

MIDDLE EAST

‘Will knock out every power plant & bridge’, Trump warns Iran again; US delegation going to Pakistan for talks on April 20:
– US president Donald Trump on Sunday said a US delegation will travel to Islamabad for fresh talks with Iran, days after an earlier round of negotiations failed in the Pakistani capital. “My representatives are going to Islamabad, Pakistan. They will be there tomorrow evening, for negotiations,” he wrote on Truth Social.
– At the same time, Trump issued a strong warning to Iran, saying the US had offered what he called a fair deal but would act if it was rejected. “We’re offering a very fair and reasonable deal, and I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single power plant, and every single bridge, in Iran. No more Mr. nice guy!” he said.”They’ll come down fast, they’ll come down easy and, if they don’t take the deal, it will be my honour to do what has to be done, which should have been done to Iran by other presidents for the last 47 years. It’s time for the Iran killing machine to end,” Trump added.
– Since the talks failed, tensions have risen again. US imposed a naval blockade on Iranian-linked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, limiting Iran’s oil exports. Iran, in response, has kept the Strait shut or partly closed, saying it will not reopen until the US lifts the blockade and ends what it called an illegal siege on its ports and energy routes. Israel establishes a ‘yellow line’ in southern Lebanon and publishes a map of the occupied area: {Trans., summary}
– The Israeli Army has published a map showing the military zone it occupies in southern Lebanon and the Mediterranean. The area includes five divisions and a maritime zone under naval control, extending eight to ten kilometres into Lebanese territory and covering dozens of municipalities.
– Although Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ten-day ceasefire after 46 days of bombings and invasion, the Israeli army admitted opening fire against alleged Hezbollah fighters described as an “immediate threat”. Reports in Haaretz, citing Israeli commanders, claim forces continue systematic demolitions of civilian homes, schools and public buildings in border villages despite the truce.
– The newly defined boundary, referred to as the “yellow line”, marks the area from which Israeli forces operate and highlights the ongoing tension despite the ceasefire. It illustrates the persistence of military activity and the fragile nature of the current pause in hostilities. Directed by Fidel Buika and featuring stars such as Susana Bianca and Camila Mendes, the open-air space of over 800 square metres seats more than 400 with large screens and jungle-themed elements.
– Chef Fabián Cangas renewed the fusion menu, keeping classics like sushi and black Angus rib-eye while adding new dishes such as king prawn and squid skewers or the Sauvage burger with black hake and caviar. It initially opens Thursday to Sunday evenings from 20.00 to midnight with the show at 21.45 and will expand to every night. New shows include Sauvage, Delicious and Icons. No minors are allowed.

Elon Musk lashes out at Sánchez again, accusing him of “high treason” for the regularization of immigrants: {Trans., summary}
– The billionaire magnate Elon Musk has once again attacked the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of “high treason” over the extraordinary process of regularising immigrants that begins this Monday.
– “Dirty Sánchez is guilty of high treason,” wrote Musk in a message with almost 50 million likes. It was published on the social network X, owned by Musk, in response to Sánchez’s remarks at the closing of the progressive summit ‘Global Progressive Mobilisation’ held on Saturday in Barcelona, where the Prime Minister defended the regularisation of half a million migrants promoted by his Government and rejected by the opposition. Robot runners beat humans in Beijing half-marathon:
– A humanoid robot has been declared champion at a half-marathon running race held in Beijing, China, on Sunday, far outpacing human participants and beating the world record. The ‘autonomously navigated’ robot ‘Qitian Dasheng’ completed the 21-kilometer course in Beijing’s Yizhuang district with a time of 50:26. A ‘remotely controlled’ robot ‘Shandian’, did finish faster at 48 minutes and 19 seconds, but was delegated to second place due to scoring regulations that penalize remote controlled robots.
– Both times were faster than the human record for the distance set by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, who ran a time of 57:20 at the Lisbon Half Marathon in March.
– This diplays huge improvements from last year. In the inaugural event in Beijing last year, the fastest robot needed a little over 2 hours and 40 minutes to reach the finishing line. Full article: https://www.dw.com/en/robot-runners-beat-humans-in-beijing-half-marathon/a-76846520 & Video Link

SCAMS

Five arrested in the ‘like scam’ case- they promised well-paid jobs for liking posts on social media: {Trans., summary}
– Five people from Tarragona, Álava and Granada were brought before the courts for allegedly defrauding over 6,000 euros from victims. The victims, both unemployed, were lured by fraudulent online job offers promising high pay for simple tasks such as liking social media posts. The criminals demanded quick acceptance, claiming other candidates were waiting.
– In both cases, victims were asked to send advance payments via Bizum or immediate transfers, with promises of later reimbursement. Small sums were paid as bait while further payments were requested until the victims realised the deception. Complaints filed through the Civil Guard’s electronic headquarters led to an investigation by the Cyber Command’s @ Team, which analysed communications and traced money transfers to identify the suspects.
– The Civil Guard advises against trusting offers of extraordinary earnings for easy work, warns against sending money to unknown parties, and urges citizens to gather detailed information on suspicious transactions.
