Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN

Warnings have been issued about a possible Super Niño, the phenomenon that could change the global climate and bring an extreme summer to Spain: {Trans., summary}
– Meteorologists and international agencies are increasingly concerned about the possible arrival of a very intense El Niño episode in 2026, with some experts already referring to the potential event as a Super Niño. Forecast models from organisations such as AEMET indicate around a sixty percent probability that El Niño will reactivate between late spring and summer, possibly lasting until the end of 2026 or beyond.
– El Niño involves abnormal warming of surface waters in the equatorial Pacific, which disrupts global atmospheric circulation and can raise average global temperatures. Current concern focuses on the potential strength of the event, as some projections suggest ocean temperatures could exceed two degrees above normal in key regions. Specialists warn that climate change may amplify its effects, increasing the likelihood of extreme heat, altered rainfall patterns, droughts and intense precipitation in different parts of the world, along with secondary impacts on hurricane activity. The regularization of immigrants will begin this Thursday, and a sworn statement will not be sufficient to prove the absence of a criminal record: {Trans., summary}
– Spain has approved an extraordinary regularisation that will allow between five hundred thousand and one million undocumented immigrants to obtain a one year residence and work permit. Applicants must have arrived before 1 January 2026, lived in Spain for at least five uninterrupted months and have no criminal record.
– The process opens online on 16 April and in person on 20 April, with a deadline of 30 June. Decisions will take between fifteen days and three months, and more than one thousand offices and staff will support the procedure. – If the applicant cannot obtain the certificate within one month, they may submit the declaration showing they attempted to do so, and the Ministry of Justice will then contact the country of origin through diplomatic channels to request the information. If after three months the Government still cannot obtain it, the applicant will be informed and, after fifteen days, the request will be considered withdrawn.
– Stateless persons are excluded.
– Applicants must provide proof of residence and evidence of work, family responsibilities or vulnerability. The Government estimates that around five hundred thousand people will ultimately benefit, many already working in Spain without documentation. Feijóo Condemns Government’s Immigration Regularisation Strategy as Unsafe and Misguided: {Trans., summary}
– Alberto Núñez Feijóo (PP) rejected the Government’s plan for a large scale regularisation of undocumented immigrants, arguing that it creates uncertainty, weakens the rule of law and sends the message that remaining in Spain without papers eventually leads to legal status. He criticised the measure for rewarding irregularity rather than genuine integration, which he believes should be demonstrated through language skills, stable employment and a clean record.
– Feijóo announced that the PP will examine the decree in detail and prepare political and legal actions to counter what he considers an irresponsible approach to migration. He also defended a different model based on strengthening legal entry routes, improving border controls, increasing returns to countries of origin and tackling human trafficking networks. The Government, meanwhile, presents the regularisation as a moral obligation, while Feijóo accuses it of using the issue to polarise and to portray the PP as aligned with the far right.

US Justice rejects the Spain’s appeal and authorizes the seizure of the football team’s assets in the Soccer World Cup: {Trans., summary}
– The Spanish Government has once again suffered a new judicial setback in the United States due to the renewable energy dispute. The ruling forces the Government to disclose information about its assets and classifies Spain as “a debtor country”, denying “allegations of sovereign immunity”. It allows creditors to identify garnishables and execute the collection of judicially recognized compensation
– The Executive of Pedro Sánchez, through the State Attorney’s Office, has attempted to suspend the execution of the sentence and annul the information requirements and judicial notifications sent by creditors to entities and organizations that maintain economic relations with the State. However, the court has concluded that a reasonable period has elapsed since the conviction without Spain having made the payment or provided guarantees, which enables creditors to initiate seizure measures on assets of the Spanish State in US territory. Additionally, the resolution authorizes plaintiffs to register the judgment in any judicial district of the United States, allowing enforcement to be expanded nationwide and facilitating the identification of assets in multiple jurisdictions.
– Thanks to this ruling, the affected companies are already announcing that they are going to activate a procedure to track assets that affect the operations of the Spanish soccer team in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The transactions maintained with Adidas, Hilton, Baylor School or FIFA are now in the crosshairs of creditors, who can proceed to claim the seizure of said payment or collection operations, “thus blocking the ability of the Spanish State to continue acting without consequences after a long number of non-compliance and non-payments”, judicial sources reported. ANDALUCÍA

The DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) is launching a speed control campaign on Andalusian roads until Sunday: {Trans., summary}
– The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is carrying out a special campaign until next Sunday to monitor and control speed on Andalusian roads, the third most common contributing factor in traffic accidents. During these seven days, the agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard will have the support of the Regional Police and the municipal police forces of the towns that have joined the initiative, who will pay special attention to speeding on the roads, as reported by the Government Delegation in Andalusia in a statement.
– In the last operation of this type deployed on Andalusian roads, in August 2025, 275,340 vehicles were checked, of which 30,175 were found to be speeding offenders and were therefore cited for speeding, representing 10.9% of the total, a percentage one point higher than the previous record. Regarding the type of road, 36.86% of drivers were cited on conventional roads (11,121), 62.96% on motorways and dual carriageways (18,999), and 0.18% in towns and villages (55). One in three Andalusians has given up traveling or going to restaurants in the last year for economic reasons: {Trans., summary}
– A new Andalusian Barometer shows that rising living costs have significantly affected household finances across the region. One in three Andalusians has reduced or abandoned travel and restaurant outings for economic reasons, and nearly two thirds believe the cost of living has risen sharply in the past year. Food shopping and housing are identified as the areas with the greatest price increases. Savings capacity has weakened, with many households saving little or relying on existing savings. If forced to cut spending further, more than half would reduce leisure and travel, while any additional income would mainly be used to improve or expand housing.
– When faced with an unexpected expense of 3,000 euros, only a third could manage it without difficulty, while another third would struggle or be unable to pay. Despite these pressures, 65 percent still rate their quality of life positively, although many feel taxes reduce it. Source, Spanish: https://www.europapress.es/esandalucia/…

HEALTH

CSIF denounces “serious delays” in neonatal screening at the Maternal and Child Hospital of Malaga: {Trans., summary}
– CSIF has denounced serious delays and a lack of control in the neonatal screening programme at the Maternal and Child Hospital of Malaga, claiming that around two hundred newborn blood samples were not analysed within the required seventy two hours. Some samples reportedly date back to November 2025, and parents began raising concerns months before the issue was detected. The union warns that delayed samples lose all diagnostic value, forcing families to undergo new tests and specialist consultations, and creating significant anxiety. CSIF describes the situation as a serious failure affecting patient safety and criticises the arrival of expired samples weeks or months late. They also link the problem to chronic staff shortages in the laboratory, which they say has only eighteen technicians instead of the thirty one required.
