We heard that there was a small notice in the ambulatoria warning people that the sea was not fit to swim in and you could be infected by ‘toxins’
No sign of these instructions anywhere else!

With reference to Patricia’s letter. I would like to add we have been coming to Torrox for about 10 years – using Penoncillo beach and each summer the sewage has drifted along. Mostly in the afternoons. Each year we are told that Nerja’s new sewage disposal plant will be finished but it never is.
It’s quite disgusting and puts visitors off going to the beach.
Something has to be done to alleviate this health hazard.

Cochineal flies/beetles ‘mealy bug’ infestation

Some information that some of you may find helpful.
We have just recently moved to Torrox Campo. Within days of arriving for our first summer the house was filled, at night-time, with white ‘mealy bugs’ – with windows closed and screens in place. We checked the internet for information and there was a good deal to be found, especially previous posts here, at Digame.
We have a lot of prickly pears surrounding the house so we, with information to hand, began to power spray the plants with water, scrub them and we also sprayed soapy liquids – all to little effect.
We did however find a solution that some of you may be aware of. My partner used a butane, hand-held blow-torch just far enough away from the prickly pear to burn off the ‘mealy bugs’ without damaging the prickly pear too much. We then went around all of the prickly pears and treated them in this way and the reduction in infestation was remarkable. While this method has been incredibly successful for us we would advise caution. The blow-torch should only be used where the area surrounding the prickly pear has been cleared of all dried garden matter – grasses, dead leaves etc. A garden hose should also be kept handy should anything catch fire. It might even be an idea to hose down the surrounding area before using the blow-torch
We would much rather have left the ‘mealy bugs’ alone but the level of infestation meant that it just wasn’t an option.

Services Needed-Competa Police Station Hours of Work
Can anyone enlighten me as to the opening hours of Competa police station please?
On 4 separate occasions,in normal hours, i have travelled from the campo to the station to take in important papers and collect information from the desk and each time they have been closed. I find this dismaying for residents to say the least and particularly at this time of year,when there is also a general influx of tourists to the village and surroundings.
