Brexit & Pensions

Extract from an article I read today, in The Telegraph,  that suggests – “no deal is better than a bad deal” Brexit might not seem such a good idea for many expat oldies!

“British pensioners living in Europe face a drop in their incomes unless a post-Brexit deal on personal pensions is secured, MPs are warning. The problem is caused by insurance contracts – such as annuity payments – which may not be able to continue paying out to overseas customers after Britain leaves the EU, in March 2019. In a letter to Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, Treasury committee chair Nicky Morgan said unless a deal is struck insurers will lose the right to service these contracts. She said insurers were being put into a bind where they “must break the contract or the break the law”.

Currently British firms have “passporting rights” which allow them to offer cross-border insurance. These will end with Brexit, unless new arrangements are secured. Ms Morgan warned: “Citizens – including many UK expatriates – living in the rest of the European Economic Area in receipt of personal pensions may face difficulties getting paid”     Ian L

Sarah & Tony Bell have just completed 2 weeks house- & Cat-sitting for us in our large 300 year old house in Sayalonga campo. We could not be more pleased with their attitude, willingness & caring for our now ageing cat, who was reluctant to let Tony go!

Recommendation- Films to Watch

If you are twiddling your thumbs here and casting a curious eye about you wondering about the Spain you find yourself in – then I recommend some must-see films that will at least keep you busy for a while.     The first is ‘Behold  a Pale Horse’ – great actors – Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif  – American accents but a picture of the Spanish Civil War that will leave you moved I feel and probably depressed !   This can be seen or recorded if you have Sky Movies4men this Saturday at 6am UK time. The second is ‘Al Sur de Granada’ which you may be familiar with as it is based on Gerald Brenans book ‘South from Granada.  This is required viewing if you have any interest in the region , particularly Las Alpujarras.  What I like is that the Spanish speak Spanish, the English speak Spanish when they can, and there are subtitles in case !  Reality ! The fourth on my list is ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.  Another film directed by ‘Guillermo del Toro’.      In 1944 Spain young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her ailing mother (Ariadna Gil) arrive at the post of her mother’s new husband (Sergi López), a sadistic army officer who is trying to quell a guerrilla uprising………Trailer   https://youtu.be/EqYiSlkvRuw
