SEVILLA
Three people arrested in Seville for trafficking in weapons of war, including an anti-tank rocket launcher: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish National Police have arrested three people in the province of Seville on suspicion of possessing and trafficking military weapons intended for criminal organisations linked to drug trafficking.
– The operation resulted in the seizure of two functioning military weapons: an AK-47 assault rifle and an M80 anti-tank rocket launcher. Both were reportedly being offered through an illegal arms network operating in the province.
– The investigation began in June 2026, focusing on individuals based in Dos Hermanas who allegedly acted as intermediaries between weapons suppliers and potential buyers. Investigators believe an assault rifle could command approximately €6,000 on the black market.
– During police surveillance, two suspects travelling in a car attempted to escape after noticing officers. They threw a bag into the street, which police recovered. It contained the AK-47, chambered in 7.62 mm, and the M80 anti-tank launcher, a 64 mm military weapon. Both were reportedly in good working order (see pic).
– A third suspect was subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged arms-dealing operation. Police also conducted four residential searches, three in Dos Hermanas and one in Seville city. All three suspects were brought before the investigating court in Dos Hermanas. Source, Spanish: https://www.servimedia.es/noticias/detenidas-tres-personas-sevilla-traficar-armas…

URDA (TOLEDO) TRAIN WRECK
The civil engineers’ committee estimates that €10 billion will be needed to restore high-speed rail service: {Trans, summary}
– A committee of the Spanish College of Civil Engineers estimates that approximately €10 billion will be needed over the next decade to restore the country’s high-speed rail network and address years of inadequate maintenance. Its chairman, Iñaki Barrón {pic}, a civil engineer and former president of the Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF), is calling for what he describes as “major surgery” to restore the network’s reliability and performance.
– The proposed investment comprises at least €3.5 billion for essential maintenance over the next ten years, plus approximately €7 billion in additional investment to repair infrastructure that has not been properly maintained. Barrón warns that “a railway line, if allowed to deteriorate, increases its deterioration exponentially”. He therefore insists on maintenance that is “adequate, constant, continuous, properly supervised, controlled and certified”.
– The committee believes railway infrastructure must become a long-term national priority. Barrón argues that railways should be treated as “a State project, not a party or parliamentary-term project”, since four-year political terms are insufficient for planning, constructing and maintaining major infrastructure.
– The committee also questions the number of reported technical incidents on the Madrid-Seville line. The Transport Ministry has acknowledged 170 incidents involving its LZB safety system over ten months. Barrón considers this unacceptable, stating: “170 incidents in 10 months is by no means normal.” He wants every incident investigated individually to establish its effect on operational reliability and system performance.
– The committee also highlights weaknesses in railway traffic management, signalling procedures and staff training. Barrón cautions against assigning blame for the Urda accident before the investigation is complete, emphasising the need to examine the wider railway control system. USA
Midterm Elections 2026– Democrats dominate as voters toss Republicans from House, Senate, governorships:
– Voters across the country pulled the lever for blue on Tuesday, ousting Republicans and delivering even longtime GOP stronghold seats to Democrats.
– The tsunami swept Republicans from Senate seats in Texas and South Carolina that the GOP had held for decades. It delivered a Democratic senator from Kansas for the first time since the New Deal.
– Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was dumped after three terms, and Republicans also ceded governorships in Nevada, Iowa, Ohio and Georgia — which elected the country’s first Black woman, Keisha Lance Bottoms, to the top post.
– In the House, Democrats were projected winners in 230 seats, and they held leads in dozens of other races as ballots were being counted. The final tally may not be known for weeks, given the slow counting in some mail-ballot election states out west, but NBC’s projection said Democrats would end up with 258 seats.
– The pummeling was nationwide. In Iowa, Democrats went from zero of the state’s four House seats to three, reducing the GOP to a single stronghold in the state’s west. Pennsylvania and New Jersey saw multiple GOP losses. Two seats in Virginia appeared to have flipped from red to blue. And in Texas, Democrats seemed poised to regain control of the state’s border.
– See updated results for all races here: https://www.bbc.com/news/election/2026/us/results

Tennis News- No. 1 Zverev, Djokovic crash out of Paris Masters, Alcaraz advances:
– Alexander Zverev lost his opening match at the Paris Masters, while 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic also fell in a Wednesday full of upsets.
– Zverev’s reign as world number one got off to a disappointing start as 24th-ranked Lorenzo Musetti eased to a 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 win over the German to reach the third round.
– Djokovic saw his hopes of winning an eighth Paris Masters title and qualifying for the ATP Finals disappear as he went out 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to world number 83 Rinky Hijikata.
– Carlos Alcaraz avoided a similar fate, however, as the seven-time major winner beat Alex Michelsen 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 to advance to the last 16.

RELIGION
Pope Leo receives fellow American Bob Dylan at the Vatican after meeting with Chicago native Patti Smith last July:
– He (the Pope) had quoted him (Dylan) in July 2026, when—in the preface to a book published by the Vatican Publishing House (LEV) titled Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift—he used words from one of his poetic compositions (figuratively addressed to the atomic bomb) to issue a stern warning against global rearmament and the nightmare of nuclear weapons: “I hate you cause yer man-made and man-owned, an’ man-handled”. Today in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV met in person with Robert Allen Zimmerman, known as Bob Dylan.
– The 85-year-old American singer-songwriter and poet, a Nobel Prize laureate in literature, is currently in Rome. Tomorrow, Thursday, November 5, he will perform at the Palazzo dello Sport as part of the autumn leg of his “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour—a concert series that also includes stops in Milan and Bologna, and is notable for its strict prohibition on smartphone recording.
– The meeting between Pope Leo and Dylan—who wore a black hooded sweatshirt—was brief, consisting of greetings and a few lighthearted exchanges. The Holy Father presented the singer with a rosary, while Dylan reciprocated with a book: Chronicles: Volume One, his autobiography, which has been published in the United States and other countries around the world.
