Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

URDA (TOLEDO) TRAIN WRECK

Avoidable Maintenance Failures & Why Óscar Puente MUST RESIGN – Latest train wreck occurred in Urda (Toledo) while government has not yet signed the increase in railway maintenance promised after the Adamuz and Gelida accidents!: {Trans, summary}
– Nearly nine months after the Adamuz crash and the later Gelida accident, Transport Minister Oscar Puente {pic} has admitted that the promised increase in railway maintenance funding has still not been signed. The February agreement with the unions SEMAF, CCOO and UGT was meant to end a threatened strike and deliver an extra 1,800 million euros for track maintenance through to 2030, plus 3,650 new jobs to strengthen safety. Yet the key funding agreements with Adif and Adif Alta Velocidad remain unsigned.
– Puente now claims they will be completed in November, after the Cabinet (Council of Ministers) only recently adjusted spending limits. This technical step was needed so the Ministry of Transport could legally commit the extra money required by the new funding agreements with Adif and Adif Alta Velocidad for the years up to 2030. Without that formal adjustment, since there is no current national budget to allocate funds, the ministry could not sign the deals that would unlock the promised increase in railway maintenance funding. Even after this late approval, facilitated by shell-game logic of shifting funds to a new project from the budget of another project, the actual agreements still remain unsigned.
– This long delay leaves the network without the extra resources that were pledged after lives were already lost. Another fatal crash, with another 69 deaths, has now occurred at Urda. Had the funds been available, and nearly a year in which to do new maintenance, deaths may have been avoided. Announcements and excuses cannot replace real investment in safety. The government has failed to act with the urgency the public deserves. Oscar Puente should resign in disgrace for allowing these vital safety measures to languish while further tragedies unfold. {And some suggest Pedro Sánchez should join him! -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/economia/2026/11/03/puente-defiende-gobierno…

SPAIN

BREAKING NEWS– Óscar Puente, Minister of Transport, resigns:
– Óscar Puente has announced his resignation as Minister of Transport after the Urda rail accident. The minister says he made the decision in the first moments, although he waited to make it public this Tuesday. {This reinforces his reputation for telling porkies by contradicting several other of his recent public announcements refusing to resign. -Ed.}
– The day had begun with his defence of his continued leadership of Transport. At the press conference after the Council of Ministers, Puente had argued that he had not adopted decisions that contributed to the accident and had claimed his response since the tragedy occurred. His departure is announced after that appearance
– The resignation announcement comes 26 days before the general elections. Until then, the Government had maintained that Puente should remain in charge of the measures to recover confidence in the railways and that his candidacy for Valladolid was not in question. MALAGA PROVINCE

Wednesday, Nov 11 National General Strike Update: {Trans, summary}
– Malaga trade unions CCOO and UGT are preparing to join in the national general strike for 11 November, with housing shortage as a central claim that asphyxiates the working class.
– Fernando Cubillo of CCOO Malaga stated the province has more than 150,000 unoccupied homes that could serve as residential housing. Of the total 1,025,000 homes, barely 700,000 are residential and occupied by families. One in three of the remainder are second homes or tourist use. Of these, 50,000 are tourist homes, 70,000 are rented, and the rest stand empty. This, he argued, shows a problem with distribution rather than an absolute lack of dwellings.
– Antonio Gonzalez of UGT Malaga called housing a item for use, not speculation, and urged a public stock of protected housing, rent caps in stressed zones, and an end to tourist flats. Nuria Lopez of CCOO Andalusia noted housing prices have risen 105 % since 2013 while salaries have risen by less than 28%. The shortage is described as acute on the Costa del Sol, with local and regional policies criticised for failing to respond.
– Other focuses of the strike are low wages, weak public services, pensions and working conditions.
– {In Andalusia specifically, the unions have linked high unemployment and precarious employment to the broader justification for mobilising on 11N. After the latest EPA labour-force survey, CCOO and UGT Andalucía publicly criticised the region’s current unemployment rate (nearly 15 %, five points above the national average), this year’s surge in summer job losses, and what they called a model of “precarious employment”. They said these figures reinforce the reasons to take part in the general strike. Ref: https://www.europapress.es/andalucia/noticia-sindicatos-piden-andalucia… -Ed.}

MALAGA CITY

The Government tightens the Low Emission Zone while Malaga keeps it suspended: {Trans, summary}
– Malaga’s Low Emission Zone stays suspended after the High Court of Andalusia struck down key parts of the local rules. Since 14 October the Town Hall has stopped issuing fines for driving in the zone. Officials now face the task of reviewing or cancelling nearly 50,000 sanction files and expect to refund around €1.38 million to drivers who already paid roughly 13,600 fines.
– New national rules require each Low Emission Zone to set real restrictions based on vehicle emissions and to apply penalties without long grace periods. These changes do not automatically restart fines in Malaga. The council must first rewrite its own regulations to meet the stricter standards before any enforcement can begin again. COSTA DEL SOL

Costa del Sol urges the Government for an alternative transport plan: {Trans, summary}
– The president of Málaga Provincial Council and Turismo Costa del Sol, Francisco Salado (PP), has urgently called on the Spanish Government to present an alternative transport plan after high-speed rail (AVE) services to Málaga were disrupted. Speaking at the World Travel Market in London, he warned that a Christmas season without AVE could severely hit tourism and local businesses.
– Salado highlighted a sharp drop in bookings during the recent November long weekend, with occupancy falling from 80–85% to around 50% in many places. He fears similar losses of income and jobs over the festive period. He is demanding coordinated measures with airlines to keep flight prices competitive and more frequent bus services between Madrid and Málaga.
– He also criticised successive infrastructure failures — the Adamuz accident, the Álora embankment collapse and the recent Urda crash — blaming them on insufficient maintenance, investment and management, and noting that these failures have cost lives and damaged the destination’s international credibility.

– The new facility will have two separate, adjacent tanks or compartments, with a combined capacity of nearly one million litres. This capacity will be added to that of the other existing municipal reservoirs, with which the new reservoir will be interconnected.
– The reservoir is being built on a plot of land acquired by the Benamargosa Town Council in January 2024 for this specific purpose. The installation of solar panels is also planned for this same site, with the aim of reducing the municipality’s electricity costs. The funding for this project is entirely municipal and the planned timeframe for its execution is five months. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/benamargosa-contara…

TRAVEL

Malaga trail where you can observe up to 28 species of dragonflies throughout the year, a 3.5 km circular route along the Guadalmina River for the whole family: {Trans, summary}
– Just outside Malaga, in Benahavis, the Dragonfly Path along the River Guadalmina offers a gentle 3.5-kilometre circular walk suitable for all ages. The easy riverside route lets visitors see up to 28 different dragonfly species throughout the year. Benahavis ranks among the richest spots in Malaga province for these insects, with 32 of the 54 known local species recorded here thanks to its clean rivers and reservoirs.
– Along the way you pass an old weir (small, low dam, often redirecting flow rather than a total block), a historic lime kiln dug into the hillside, and information panels about the dragonflies. Look out for the large emperor dragonfly, nearly nine centimetres long, and the protected metallic Oxygastra curtisii with its emerald eyes. Start from the village centre, follow the river bank past the Guadalmina weir and dam, then return via the old mill path. It is one of the prettiest and most wildlife-rich short walks in the Malaga area. Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/malaga/2026/11/03/sendero-malaga-observar…

Two Medical Union Strikes- Andaluz SMA Strike Cancelled, National SMU Strike Remains: {DigameXtra}
– The United Doctors Union (SMU) has called a national and regional strike between November 16 and 27. This remains in effect.
– The Andalusian Medical Union (SMA) has announced the cancellation of the 24-hour strike planned for Andalucia, November 13, after noting progress in the implementation of the labour improvements. This union is just one of several groups representing Andaluz health workers, so this cancellation only applies to facilities affiliated with SMA.

With Royal Decree, Spain Caps Medical Residents’ On-Call Shifts at 17 Hours, Boosts Pay: {Trans, summary}
– The Spanish Council of Ministers has approved a royal decree limiting on-call shifts for medical residents (MIR) and other specialized health science trainees from 24 hours to a maximum of 17. It also improves their pay by adding a progressive training supplement on top of the base salary corresponding to statutory staff.
– The ordinary working week cannot exceed an average of 35 hours per semester. Centers must schedule residents’ hours primarily according to training goals and notify them at least two months in advance. Mandatory rest includes a minimum of 12 continuous hours between shifts and 24 uninterrupted hours weekly; these rests are non-waivable and non-recoverable except in justified cases within a 14-day reference period.
– Residents may generally perform up to four 17-hour on-call modules per month (exceptionally a fifth for teaching reasons, or up to seven voluntarily). Combined ordinary and on-call time is capped at 45 hours weekly on a quarterly average. Centers must keep accessible time-recording systems.The training supplement starts at 18% of base pay in year one and rises to 58% by year five. Working-time changes apply from 1 September 2027; pay updates from 1 January 2027.
– The MIR Association criticized the decree, claiming loss of purchasing power due to fewer on-call shift hours and demanding its repeal after the 29 November elections. {Basically, they want more money AND less hours. For many residents, on-call shifts (guardias) form a large share of monthly income. When the government cuts the volume of those paid hours without a big enough increase in the new training supplement / base pay, total take-home pay drops for a lot of people. That’s what the Asociación MIR is now highlighting as a “loss of purchasing power.” -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/sociedad/sanidad-limita…

TECH

Is Your IPTV-box Distributing Kiddie Porn Or Helping Finance Terrorists? It’s Possible! Google dismantles massive botnet hidden in common Android TV boxes:
– Google and partners shut down a huge hidden network of more than 1.3 million infected Android TV boxes sold around the world. The bad software was built into the devices by a Chinese maker before they ever reached wholesaler distributors, shops or homes. Owners had no idea their TV boxes were being used by criminals. {Retail box sellers have plausible deniability, but many suspected that the bargain priced units were cheaper for a nefarious reason; and it was common knowledge among techs. Note that some “free” VPNs do the same thing, run their illegal content thru VPN user’s internet connections so it’s not traceable back to the real source. If the service they are providing you is “free”, they are making money off your internet connection or data. Nothing on the internet is free, and all data is valuable. -Ed.}
– The main threats to ordinary users were serious. Criminals could quietly use a household’s internet connection to hide their own activity, run online scams, steal data, or commit identity theft while looking like they came from the victim’s home address. The software could also download more malware without permission and was designed to reinstall itself if anyone tried to remove it. Millions of families and small businesses were completely unaware their devices were helping with crime.
– Despite the rogue network takedown, there is little help for people who still own these boxes. Google cut off the servers that controlled the malware, making it largely inactive for now. However, the company has not said it will notify owners or provide a way to clean the devices. There is no simple fix users can apply themselves as the malware sits deep inside the equipment, “hard-coded” into processors, rendering reinstallation of the operating system ineffective as a fix. {Despite the takedown, the bot-net could be reactivated at any time for new illegal activities. Tech savvy users can check the network connections control panel in the settings of their routers to determine if their TV box is making suspicious connections. -Ed.} Full article: https://therecord.media/google-dismantles-botnet…

SPACE

How the Earth orbiting the Sun really happens, its a corkscrew path:
– We were taught that Earth orbits the Sun in a closed circle. In reality, Earth has never returned to the same point in space once in 4.5 billion years.
- Right now, the Sun is carrying Earth and every planet around the center of the Milky Way at 230 km/s (828,000 km/h), more than 18,000 kilometers every 80 seconds.
– Because the Solar System is tilted 60.2° to the galactic plane and bobs up and down through the galactic disc roughly every 30 million years, the planets trace open 3D corkscrew helices across deep space rather than flat loops.
– The last time the Sun stood where it stands today, one Galactic Year (230 million years) ago, the very first dinosaurs were only beginning to appear on Earth. Since forming 4.6 billion years ago, our Sun has completed only 20 laps. Watch the video post here: X Video Link
