Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

PP and Vox seal an electoral pact to maintain their absolute majority in the Senate: {Trans, summary}
– The People’s Party (PP) and Vox have sealed a strategic agreement for the Senate electoral lists, with the main objective of optimizing the vote and ensuring the absolute majority that Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s party already obtained in the 2023 elections, by not competing against each other.
– This pact, announced yesterday, means that the People’s Party (PP) will not field candidates in Tarragona, Girona, and Gipuzkoa, while Vox will do the same in six provinces and limit its presence to a single candidate in fourteen constituencies. The alliance aims to counter the coalition between the Socialist Party (PSOE) and the alternative left, and has generated diverse reactions and analyses regarding its impact and implications for both parties. Spanish Unions Call for Shopping Boycotts Ahead of 11 November General Strike as Living Costs Soar: {Trans, summary}
– Three organisations – CSI, Justicia Alimentaria and consumer group FACUA – are urging a shopping boycott of supermarkets, hypermarkets and major chains on 28 October, 4 November and 11 November, when a general strike is planned over housing and living costs. On strike day, they call for no purchases in shops or online.
– Participants are encouraged instead to use municipal markets, local shops, cooperatives and producers directly on boycott days. The campaign says workers unable to strike at work can participate by withholding spending.
– Organisers cite rising food costs, rents and energy and transport expenses, claiming groceries cost over 40% more than in 2019. They demand rent reductions of up to 50% depending on tenants’ incomes, food price controls, limits on major retailers’ profit margins and clearer origin pricing. According to INE data cited by the organizations, overall inflation closed September at 4.9%.
To illustrate this situation, they pointed out that Mercadona earned profits of €1.729 billion in 2025, 25% more than the previous year.
– They point out another contentious issue, that farmers receive far less than consumers pay; in April 2025, a kilo of onions was paid to producers at €0.30 and sold for €2.25. AXARQUÍA

La Viñuela already has the vehicle chargers that Torrox needs 5 years to build– La Viñuela is one of the 28 municipalities where the Provincial Council has installed these charging stations: {Trans, summary}
– La Viñuela’s municipal electric vehicle chargers will cost €0.25 per kilowatt-hour, including tax. A 40 kWh top-up would therefore cost €10, although the actual amount depends on the energy required. Access and payment are through the authorised website or official apps.
– Drivers receive an additional 30 free minutes parking after charging ends. Thereafter, occupying the space costs €0.10 per minute. Maximum charging times depend on charger power: two hours at 50 kW or above, four hours from 22 kW to below 50 kW, six hours from 11 kW to below 22 kW, and eight hours below 11 kW. The additional 30-minute grace period follows the charging limit.
– Electric cars, plug-in hybrids and several other electric vehicle types may use the points. Combustion vehicles and vehicles not actively charging are prohibited. Fines are €100 for minor offences, €200 for serious offences and €500 for very serious offences. The most serious offences also bring a three-month ban from using the chargers. Overstaying may incur traffic penalties and continued per-minute charges. Local police enforce the rules.

MALAGA PROVINCE

A teacher from Torre del Mar reports five-month waits for driving licence:
– Driving instructor Ana Aguayo Ortiz has appealed to Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) over waits for practical driving tests in Málaga province. She says candidates who fail may wait four or five months to retake the test, forcing them to pay for extra lessons and undermining their confidence.
– Some learners need a licence to keep their jobs or take their children to school, particularly in Axarquía villages where alternatives to driving are limited. Aguayo does not blame examiners, but calls on the DGT to improve organisation and fill vacancies.
– Málaga’s driving schools association has raised concerns for years. Its president estimated in September that more than 18,000 people were waiting to take the practical test or begin training. The province then had 25 examiners and nine vacancies.
– The DGT has disputed driving schools’ backlog estimates and said in June that its plan to reduce waiting times was producing initial results. Full article: https://malagapress.com/en/eastern-costa-del-sol/a-teacher-from-torre-del-mar-reports-five-month-waits-for-driving-licence

MALAGA CITY

No company is interested in building the Malaga Auditorium- It will require more electricity to operate than is available: {Trans, summary}
– Málaga’s €202.6 million Music Auditorium project has suffered a major setback, with no construction companies submitting bids before the deadline. The tender has therefore failed, forcing the city council to revise the contract and relaunch the entire procurement process: studies, permits, authorizations, etc., pushing the project back several years if not dooming it to failure.
– The central obstacle is the lack of electrical capacity. The project requires 10 megawatts, but the necessary electricity supply has not been granted. Without it, obtaining a construction licence is impossible, making the project commercially unattractive and potentially unviable. Regional electricity capacity is exhausted, pending approval of a new national infrastructure plan. Despite earlier expressions of interest from nine specialist firms, none has submitted an offer.
– The council had hoped to award the contract before the end of 2026 and begin construction in 2027. The planned complex would accommodate nearly 2,000 people and take four years to complete. Funding also remains uncertain: confirmed public contributions total €50 million, while the remainder depends on private sponsors and donors. A proposed €40 million sponsorship from Cajamar remains subject to public tender arrangements. – The vegetation fire that broke out early this morning north of Calaceite, near El Peñoncillo, is now under control, following an intense night of work by security and emergency services. The fire resulted in no injuries, no evacuations, and no material damage, affecting only forest and open fields, according to initial reports from municipal sources.
– Although the fire is under control, ground crews are continuing their work in the area, so please exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel to the affected area while the final stages of extinguishing the blaze are completed. What ever happened to the Burger King that was scheduled to open in Torrox/El Morche this summer?: {DigameXtra with ChatGPT AI assist. AI can make mistakes, confirm all critical info independently.}
– Torrox’s planned Burger King restaurant in the Santa Rosa-El Morche area, near Avenida del Sol, was announced in March 2026, with an expected opening in early July. However, that deadline has passed, and no confirmed opening date or definitive explanation for the delay has been identified in the available reporting.
– The original application, registered with Torrox Town Hall on 16 March 2026, covered plots 201 and 202. It included an execution project, an acoustic study and an environmental qualification request. At the time of reporting, the application was awaiting municipal technical assessments and the necessary licences.
– Construction was estimated to take approximately three months once work began. The missed deadline therefore suggests that the original schedule was not achieved, potentially because of delayed permits, a late construction start or subsequent operational issues. However, none of these explanations has been confirmed. The definitive answer requires an update from the town hall or Burger King Spain.

CEUTA CRISIS

No Surprise, Pedro Lied When He Said He’s Declassify All The Docs – The judge now demands the Government declassify within 15 days all the CNI reports on the Ceuta crisis and “Morocco’s actions”: {Trans}
– Judge María Tardón of Spain’s National High Court has demanded the Government to declassify new documents relating to the “serious attack on Spain’s territorial integrity” that took place at the end of July, when nearly 90,000 migrants crossed the border and entered Ceuta. The judge is particularly interested in obtaining “all the notes and reports” produced by the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) from 30 July onwards and, more specifically, those “relating to the actions of the Moroccan authorities up to the present date”. The Council of Ministers has fifteen calendar days to comply with the judge’s urgent request, as she herself stipulates in the ruling issued on Tuesday.
– Judge Tardón is not only demanding the Council of Ministers to declassify these documents, but is also demanding a list of the authorities who received information from the CNI, including both those documents declassified by the Government on 8 September and those that remain secret. The order issued on Tuesday by the investigating judge also calls for the declassification of the identities of the CNI members who, according to the case file, were in contact with the Guardia Civil and the former chief of staff of the Government Delegation in Ceuta in the days preceding the mass arrival of migrants in the autonomous city.
– Much of the information demanded by the investigating judge in her ruling is directly aimed at establishing Morocco’s involvement in, or response to, the events at the end of July. Tardón has already sent the CNI an extensive questionnaire addressing matters such as the relationship between the intelligence agency and its Moroccan counterparts. However, the judge has been dissatisfied with the response provided by the Spanish intelligence services. She is therefore now requiring the declassification of “any note or communication” issued or received from the intelligence services of the Kingdom of Morocco… The entire article is posted in the image below. TRAVEL

Super Fast Trains Are Coming– But Will You Trust Them?: {Trans, summary}
– Renfe has ordered 30 Siemens Velaro Novo high-speed trains, with an option for ten more, in a contract worth €1.218 billion including maintenance equipment. The trains are designed to reach 350 km/h, although operating speeds will depend on each route.
– Each train will offer 520 seats across seven carriages: 404 in Standard class and 116 in First class. Seats can turn to face the direction of travel, and every seat will have a power socket and USB connection. Larger areas will accommodate luggage, bicycles and passengers with reduced mobility. Improved Wi-Fi, passenger information and onboard entertainment are also planned.
– Lighter construction, revised aerodynamics and redesigned bogies aim to reduce energy use, noise and vibration, while limiting pressure changes in tunnels. High-capacity batteries will provide movement during some emergencies, reducing the need for rescue locomotives. Remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance are intended to identify faults early and reduce delays and cancellations. The first five trains are due by 2030, with all 30 expected by late 2031, subject to testing and authorisation.
– {The new Siemens trains offer more seats, better passenger facilities, lower energy consumption and a design intended to reduce noise and vibration. However, these features do not, resolve concerns about track maintenance, signalling, infrastructure inspections or operational safety. Following the January 2026 accidents, and the many other incidents and almost daily delays, questions about infrastructure maintenance and the pressures created by increased rail traffic leave doubts whether the public will trust even faster trains than the current, accident-prone trains we have now. Faster trains = greater damage & injury when there is a crash! -Ed.} Source, Spanish: https://www.laopiniondemalaga.es/malaga/2026/10/27/seran-nuevos-ave-renfe…

Healthcare-associated infections cause more than 5,000 deaths a year in Spain, according to a study: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s study of healthcare-associated infections estimates that they cause 5,067 deaths annually, around three times the number of deaths from road traffic accidents. The EPINE study, conducted by the Spanish Society of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Healthcare Management, analysed more than 280,000 people between 2022 and 2026. It found that 7.3% of hospitalised patients developed a healthcare-associated infection.
– Patients with these infections faced a higher risk of death even after adjustments for age, sex, underlying illness severity and hospital size. Respiratory infections and bloodstream infections accounted for the largest number of deaths. In 2026, 2.35% of hospitalised patients had infections involving multidrug-resistant organisms; these were associated with an estimated 986 additional deaths annually. Around 45% of hospital patients received antimicrobials, while a pilot review of 1,312 prescriptions across 15 hospitals found only 58% were appropriate.
– Researchers call for infection prevention, better antibiotic prescribing and coordinated action against antimicrobial resistance. SCIENCE

MIT scientists build a tiny robot that swims using living muscle cells:
– MIT engineers have built a paper-thin swimming robot powered by living muscle cells that respond to flashes of light, allowing it to swim and steer through water. The breakthrough could pave the way for tiny, self-healing biological robots capable of exploring fragile environments that ordinary machines cannot safely navigate.
– The idea of a machine powered by living muscle is no longer just a theoretical proposition. Researchers have succeeded in making these structures bend, swim, jump, and grasp objects, although they still need to figure out how to keep them active for extended periods.
– There is still a long way to go. But the ETH Zurich experiment leads to one clear conclusion: the future of robotics doesn’t have to depend exclusively on motors, gears, and rigid structures; it can also explore the mechanical possibilities of living tissue itself…{the birth of the cyborgs is upon us. -Ed.}

FINANCIAL

Pension increase in 2027– when will the CPI be known that will determine how much pensioners will receive?: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish pensioners may receive a larger increase in 2027 if inflation remains elevated. The final adjustment will be calculated using average year-on-year inflation over the 12 months from December 2025 to November 2026. The National Statistics Institute will publish preliminary November figures on 27 November, with confirmation expected on 15 December.
– Economic research centre Funcas forecasts average inflation of 3.6% for the relevant period, although the final increase remains unconfirmed. Inflation rose to 4.9% year on year in September 2026, partly attributed in the report to the war in Iran.
– For comparison, pensions increased by 2.7% in 2026. This added approximately €572 annually, or €40.85 monthly across 14 payments, to the average retirement pension. Therefore, the next increase should be greater than that. In October 2026, the average retirement pension stood at €1,577.60 per month, while the average pension across the social security system was €1,376.14.
