Recommendations & Requests

Dog groomer: Can anyone suggest a genuinely gentle and caring dog groomer locally, within the Torre del Mar area ?
My usual groomer returned my dog to me the last time traumatised with a badly twisted nail and she was bleeding when urinating immediately afterwards. Many thanks. Alan, Torre del Mar. WhatsApp 44 7885 298691
Email protonmale @ protonmail dot com

Dairy-free products: Our granddaughter, who has severe lactose intolerance, is visiting this summer. Can anyone advise where we might buy dairy-free milk, cheese etc., especially the Oatly brand, in the Competa area or on the coast? Many thanks
Melvyn, Competa; melvyndc@gmail.com

90/180 day rule for non residents: Nerja Town Hall has just issued a guide for non residents from the UK. I found it quite interesting, but seemed to over complicate this rule.
My simple way of gauging my non-rule-breaking time in the EU is to check back on the first day of my arrival for 180 days previously and make sure less than 90 days were in Spain (EU really) then do the same for my last day. (Since it is a rolling scale you don’t need to worry about days in-between) Simple!!

SPAIN

Discount on fuel prices in Spain will start to be applied from this Friday, and this is how it will work:
-The 20 céntimo discount on a litre of fuel will start being applied this Friday, 1 April, says the Spanish government, because it is not necessary to wait until the decree receives formal ratification in Parliament. It will be applied at the moment of payment, and the receipt should show the price paid by the consumer and itemise the discount. In other words, it should specify how much of the discount has been paid by the State (15 céntimos per litre) and how much by the oil companies (five céntimos per litre).
-Measures are being put into effect to prevent filling stations putting their prices up before Friday and then applying the discount. There will be a mechanism through which they must officially communicate any price rise, and the authorities “will ensure compliance”. Prices in Spain have risen by 9.8 per cent as a result of the war in Ukraine:
-The cost of electricity is twice as expensive as it was a year ago, fuel prices have risen and the Retail Price Index is at the highest level for nearly 40 years.
-For months now, inflation in Spain has been running at a rate not seen for decades but figures released today, Wednesday 30, show that it has set a new record in March. The Retail Price Index has risen more than two points to 9.8%, which is the highest since May 1985, which was 37 years ago. The costs of electricity and fuel have risen the most compared with a year ago, but they are not the only ones to be affected. Spain bans job dismissals linked to crippling energy prices: The Spanish government on Tuesday banned firms which get state aid to deal with the economic impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from firing workers over rising energy prices. Unvaccinated non-EU tourists still can’t visit Spain in April: Britons, Americans and other non-EU/Schengen travellers who are neither vaccinated nor recently recovered from Covid-19 will not be able to visit Spain for tourism over Easter or in April 2022, Spanish authorities confirmed on Tuesday. All Andalusian provinces now sit at Level 0 of the coronavirus health alert: All the health districts of Andalucía are once again at coronavirus health alert Level 0. UK’s first LNG-powered ferry launches route between Portsmouth and Bilbao: The Salamanca is the first LNG-powered vessel to join the Brittany Ferries’ fleet and left on its inaugural voyage to Spain on Sunday March 27th with more than 600 passengers and freight vehicles. EUROPE

Germany and Austria take step towards gas rationing: Germany and Austria have triggered emergency plans over possible gas supply disruption amid a payments stand-off with Russia.
Russia had demanded “unfriendly” countries pay for its gas in roubles from 31 March, but the EU, which mainly pays in euros, rejected the idea.
Moscow later appeared to soften its stance, saying on Wednesday rouble payments would be introduced gradually.
But Germany and Austria have taken the first steps towards gas rationing. Under an existing gas emergency plan, the “early warning phase”, which both Germany and Austria have begun, is the first of three steps designed to prepare the country for a potential supply shortage. In its final stage, the governments would bring in gas rationing. Full article: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-60925016

Every team that has qualified for the 2022 World Cup as final places confirmed for tournament in Qatar: World Cup qualifying has been coming thick and fast over the past few days as the final spots get confirmed ahead of Friday’s draw.
Remarkably, we still won’t know every team who will be playing at Qatar 2022 by the end of this window with the inter-confederation play-offs coming on June 13-14 as well as Ukraine’s tie with Scotland getting pushed to June.
However, we are close to the final line-up, so let’s break it down… Full article:

Hackers masquerading as law enforcement officials allegedly hoodwinked Apple and Meta, goading the two tech giants to surrender user data: Citing “three people close to the matter,” a Wednesday Bloomberg News report revealed the malicious actors used forged legal documents to bamboozle Apple and Meta.
According to Bloomberg, Apple and Meta surrendered “basic subscriber details,” including customers’ phone numbers and IP addresses. There was no mention of how many accounts are estimated to have been compromised. The hackers allegedly used the ill-gotten information to carry out harassment campaigns and financial fraud. Halting Erosion Using Vetiver Grass from Vetiver Spain:
Vetiver Grass is a fast growing non-invasive clumping grass that grows to 2 metres in height. It has a root system that grows to 3-4 metres deep and they are very strong.
The National Geographic Magazine has called them “Roots of Steel”.
Once Vetiver is established it is drought resistant.
We are located in Sayalonga and we can plant all year round but February and March are the best months to plant Vetiver. Vetiver loves the heat of a long summer to get established.
Decomposing Vetiver used as a mulch, improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away as it is a natural insect repellent. It is in the same family as Lemon Grass, which we also carry.
Vetiver also is a nutritious and replenishable animal feed. Horses, cattle, and pigs love it.
We use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive Ornamental hedge.

-The incidence of coronavirus has risen slightly on Tuesday to 466.51 cases per 100,000 population over the past 14 days. On Friday, it had stood at 461.86 cases, although since the new counting system began, with data collected twice a week (Tuesday & Friday) instead of daily, the evolution of cases has followed an irregular path, with slight rises and falls, although below the barrier of 500 cases, at a high risk level.
-By autonomous communities, the regions with the highest incidence rates are the Canary Islands and Galicia, with over 900 cases, and Extremadura, with over 800. Meanwhile, those reporting the lowest rates are Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Castilla y León and Andalusia, below the Spanish average. Andalusia, with 9,771 new positive cases; Valencia, with 9,321; and Madrid, with 6,940 cases since Friday, are the three regions where the number of positive cases has increased the most.
-There has been a slight decrease in hospitalisations due to COVID-19 and in the percentage of people admitted to hospital, both on the ward and in the ICU. In the case of the ICU, the number of patients with the coronavirus fell to 5.4% of occupied beds. SPAIN

Spain approves emergency package to tackle high energy bills, waits for EU approval: Spain will cut connection fees and tax excess profits on newly signed electricity supply contracts as part of a multi-billion euro emergency package to cushion businesses and consumers from soaring energy prices, the government said on Tuesday.
Initially announced on Monday, the cabinet approved on Tuesday the 16 billion euro ($18 billion) package of soft loans and direct aid that also includes measures to cap rental increases and boost employment of young people and women.
Of the total package, most of which still needs to be approved by the European Commission, 6 billion euros will come as direct aid and tax cuts mostly extended from a previous package related to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the remaining 10 billion euros are subsidised loans. (So they are repurposing funds that were intended for Covid Economic Recovery to pay for Energy Crisis Relief?!? Will these funds be repaid to the Covid Recovery Program for which they were intended, to cover economic damage from Covid that still exists and is still waiting to receive these same funds? If not, this is classic “robbing Peter to pay Paul.”  -Ed.) The limit of the rise in rents will be automatic for large property owners and negotiated for small: The Government detailed this Tuesday “a historic measure” to alleviate the impact of the current inflation peak “on people who rent their homes”: the limitation of rent revaluation to 2% for three months. This measure, included in the Royal Decree Law approved by the Council of Ministers, will apply to contracts that are updated from the time the rule is published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) until June 30.

The Council of Europe “deplores” the “lack of improvements” in the face of corruption in “the National Police and the Civil Guard”:
The Council of Europe suspends Spain for the lack of progress in the fight against corruption in the central State Administration and, in particular, in the National Police and the Civil Guard. This is established in the latest evaluation report by GRECO –Group of States against Corruption– of the pan-European institution, not dependent on the EU, which brings together 47 countries. GRECO put 19 tasks to Spain three years ago, and according to its review, “Spain has not satisfactorily implemented or dealt with satisfactorily any of the 19 recommendations: seven have been partially implemented and 12 have not been implemented”. EUROPE

Russia says it will scale back near Kyiv as talks progress: Russia announced Tuesday it will significantly scale back military operations near Ukraine’s capital and a northern city, as the outlines of a possible deal to end the grinding war came into view at the latest round of talks.
Ukraine’s delegation at the conference, held in Istanbul, laid out a framework under which the country would declare itself neutral and its security would be guaranteed by an array of other nations.
Moscow’s public reaction was positive, and the negotiations are expected to resume on Wednesday. Amid the talks, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said Moscow has decided to “fundamentally … cut back military activity in the direction of Kyiv and Chernihiv” to “increase mutual trust and create conditions for further negotiations.” Full article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-zelenskyy-ap-top-news-europe-istanbul-4625afe04bd10a05c14914bb9f4ef0b0

EXPLAINER- What would paying for natural gas in rubles mean?:
-Europe imports large amounts of Russian natural gas to heat homes, generate electricity and fuel industry, and those imports have continued despite the war in Ukraine.
-Around 60% of imports are paid in euros, and the rest in dollars. Putin wants to change that by requiring foreign gas importers to purchase rubles and use them to pay state-owned supplier Gazprom.
-Asked by reporters if Russia could cut gas supplies to European customers if they reject the demand to pay in rubles, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a conference call Monday that “we clearly aren’t going to supply gas for free.” “In our situation, it’s hardly possible and feasible to engage in charity for Europe,” Peskov said.

Scientists Spot Signs of Huge Ice Volcanoes on Pluto: A team of scientists spotted evidence of relatively recent ice volcanoes on Pluto, advancing our understanding of the dwarf planet’s surface-sculpting activities. Pluto’s ice volcanoes are impressive, with some reaching 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) in height. They’re found in an area with few impact craters, hinting the volcanoes spewed out slush that reshaped the surface relatively recently in the dwarf planet’s history.
-The team released a perspective view of the cryovolcanic region that gives us a good idea of what the area would look like if we were to send a camera down to get a bird’s eye view.
-Scientists have seen evidence of cryovolcanism in other parts of the solar system, notably on dwarf planet Ceres and Saturn’s moon Titan. The study’s authors say Pluto’s ice volcanoes and distinct surface and atmospheric conditions make it “unique among the visited places in the solar system.” Photo of Pluto’s  surface:NASA. Crisis Relief Plans- Government provides fuel subsidy of 20 cents per litre and limits rent increases to 2%: {Translation} 28/03/2022 16:48
-A crisis plan to deal with the war in Ukraine addressing five elements that include: social measures, aid for companies, subsidies for transport, a plan to promote cybersecurity and new formulas to make energy and electricity cheaper. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has put the cost of the ‘Response Plan’ to the impact of the war in Ukraine at 16,000 million, which will be approved tomorrow by the Council of Ministers and which includes a ban on objective dismissals and a minimum subsidy of 20 cents per litre of fuel, among other measures.
-The plan, which will last until 30 June, will have an impact of around 6 billion in direct aid and tax reductions and a further 10 billion in ICO credits (loans) to cushion the impact of the crisis.
***Here is a breakdown of the most important measures announced today by Sánchez***
-Spain will subsidise the purchase of each litre of fuel by a minimum of 20 cents for both private individuals and professionals, of which 15 cents will be provided by the state and the rest by the oil companies. These companies have already announced discounts of up to 14 cents per litre linked to the use of their loyalty cards. The discount will be applied from 1 April when filling up at the petrol station and will benefit all.
-Veto to objective dismissals, and commitment to promote the use of ERTE in companies suffering difficulties or stoppages.
-This week, Spain and Portugal will present to Brussels an “exceptional and temporary” measure to set a reference price for gas used in combined cycle power plants to generate electricity. To this end, another daily auction will be held on the wholesale market to set the price for consumers and SMEs covered by the regulated tariff or pvpc.
-Limits on rent rises to 2% and a 15% increase in the amount of the Minimum Vital Income (IMV).
-Update of the remuneration system for renewables, cogeneration and waste, the so-called Recore, which will mean a reduction in system charges of 1.8 billion. The aim is to bring forward by one year the adjustment in the remuneration of this sector that should be made in 2023.
-Extension until 30 June of the mechanism to reduce excess profits in the electricity market caused by the high price of natural gas on international markets.
-Extension (announced at the beginning of the month) of the tax reduction on electricity bills (VAT at 10% for small consumers, the special electricity tax at 0.5% and the suspension of the tax on electricity generation).
-Extension of the bono social eléctrico to a further 600,000 families, which will reach almost two million households. This bonus, which is a discount on the price of electricity, is paid for by the electricity companies.
-500 million euros in aid for energy-intensive industry in order to offset tolls by 80%, reach the CO2 compensation ceiling and reinforce direct aid to the sector.
-New line of ICO credit (loans, not grants) guarantees for 10 billion euros to cover liquidity needs due to higher energy prices.
-The maturity period of the loans guaranteed by the ICO and the grace period for the most affected business sectors are also extended.
– 362 million aid package for the agriculture and livestock sector and 68 million for the fisheries sector.
-Aid of more than 1 billion euros for the transport sector: a 20 euro cent fuel rebate and a package of 450 million euros for goods and passenger transport companies, depending on the type of vehicle (1,250 euros for lorries, 900 euros for buses, 500 euros for vans and 300 euros for taxis, VTC or ambulances). The deadline for the refund of the tax on hydrocarbons is also reduced from three to one month.
-Launch of a national cybersecurity plan with more than 1 billion euros to act in 150 essential points. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/economia/abci-veto-despidos-y-fijacion-precio-medidas-plan-espana-frente-guerra-202203281125_noticia.html

The strike of carriers loses strength after the agreement with the Government: In the third week of the transporters’ strike, the strike begins to lose force, mainly due to the agreement reached by the employers of the sector, the National Committee for Road Transport (CNTC) with the Ministry of Transport last week. The pact, which includes a bonus of 20 cents per liter of fuel and direct aid of 450 million euros, has satisfied some drivers, who worked this Monday with apparent normality.
Mercamadrid, the largest merchandise distribution center in the country, where this Monday they received only 7% less products than usual, when in the first days of the strike they recorded drops of up to 40%.
However, from the National Platform in Defense of Transport -callers of the strike- they assure that they will continue with the protest until the Minister of Transport summons them to another meeting and gives answers to their demands. The president of the platform, Manuel Hernández, assured in statements to TVE that “much to our regret we have to continue with the stopped trucks.” “It costs us less money to be unemployed than to work, the situation is chaotic,” Hernández explained. Editor’s Note: President Sanchez is pushing half-truths as crisis solutions. The petrol relief depends on small suppliers to provide discounts they have not agreed to provide. The 16Billion in ‘Response Plan’ funds to compensate for the impact of the war in Ukraine includes 10 Billion in loans that must be repaid, many do not consider that “relief” in that it must be paid back, with interest! They say this is only a delay of debt, not actual relief. Considering that only 40% of the Spanish Covid relief funds for businesses and the self employed have so far been distributed, many observers are highly skeptical of these new proposals.

Small and medium-sized petrol stations cannot advance the petrol discounts announced by Sánchez, according to CEEES: {Translation}
-The Spanish Confederation of Service Station Entrepreneurs (CEEES) has warned that small and medium-sized service stations lack the financial capacity to advance the discounts announced by the President.
-The General Assembly of the confederation, which met this Monday as a matter of urgency, unanimously agreed to ask the Government to clarify as quickly as possible what the mechanism for implementing the generalised discount on fuels will be, which, as announced by the president, will begin to be applied next Thursday, 1 April.
-Thus, CEEES states that it does not know which mechanism will be used. This measure, which was originally intended only for hauliers, will now be universal, according to the President’s announcement.
-While awaiting the details of the measures that are expected to be approved tomorrow by the Council of Ministers, the CEEES assembly warns that if what the government wants is for the sector’s SMEs and micro-SMEs (Small and Mid-size Enterprise) to finance the initiative, “the reality is that it will be ineffective”.
-“Not because the service stations do not wish to contribute to the success of the initiative, but because they are directly unable to do so”, according to the employers’ association, which defends the interests of more than 4,000 Spanish service stations in the hands of SMEs and micro-SMEs.
-Thus, according to CEEES, neither many wholesale operators nor, of course, retail distributors have the capacity to advance these amounts, which is why they warn that the Government’s intention will be “absolutely ineffective” if mechanisms are not put in place that – as has been done in other neighbouring countries – guarantee that the measures approved tomorrow by the Council of Ministers will have a positive impact on the pockets of their customers. The Malaga-Axarquia Health Dept. warns of false e-mails from the supposed Ministry of Health: {Translation} The Malaga-Axarquia Health Area denies sending the messages that arrive by mail from a false profile of the Ministry of Health. The organisation advises to follow only official channels.
In a Facebook post recently uploaded by the AGS East Malaga-Axarquia, it warns of the arrival of an email that numerous users are receiving. The message includes a PDF document, that they suggest you do not to open, and an invitation to an additional dose of the vaccine against Covid-19, something that they clarify is false.
In fact, the AGS assures that it is a hoax and alerts people “not to access any link in the email, do not provide information, and follow only the information from official channels”. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiahoy.es/articulo/salud/el-area-sanitaria/20220325190828047433.html

TECH

Google Chrome users urged to update immediately:
Google has urged Chrome users to update the web browser to the latest version in order to avoid being targeted by cybercriminals.
Late last week, the company released Chrome 99.0.4844.84 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, which fixes a high severity zero-day vulnerability that allows for remote code execution.
In an advisory published alongside the update, the company explained that the issue has already been abused in real-life scenarios. “Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-1096 exists in the wild,” wrote the firm. Because the flaw is being abused in the wild, Google is deliberately withholding additional information until users are able to patch up their systems. Kaspersky Anti-virus User Note: {Editor} Don’t panic. Kaspersky is a global company with locations in 34 countries. The privately-owned company started 25 years ago, and yes, its headquarters are in Moscow, Russia. My understanding is that Kapersky’s west european traffic is processed in their Swiss facility. Kaspersky operates under a holding company in the U.K. For the time being it remains safe to use. If it were me, I would keep using it until my subscription expired, then switch to Bit Defender. If any confirmed threat develops, I will report it here.
However, in light of the real possibility of cyber warfare, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Here is how to uninstall Kaspersky applications if you wish to remove it from your computers or phones. https://www.komando.com/security-privacy/kaspersky-antivirus-dangers/830542/

Transport workers continue strikes and call for another meeting with the minister: {Translation} 27Mar22 16:57
-The spokesman for the National Platform for the Defence of Road Transport, Manuel Hernández, has called for a new meeting with the minister Raquel Sánchez to “unblock” the problem of below-cost contracts, for which small hauliers have been on strike for fourteen days.
-Hernández wants to convey to the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda that she would call off the demonstrations with a royal decree that guarantees them work under a minimum profitability, on a transitional basis until the Land Transport Law can be modified, he explained in an interview on TVE’s 24-hour channel.
-The spokesperson for the platform assures that the “dominant position” that the shippers have over them means that they have to work at a loss, which is why they are calling on the government to “legislate so that these bad practices do not occur, leading the basic sector to ruin”. Hernández insisted that it “costs small hauliers more money to work than to be unemployed” and that they do not want “subsidies or aid”.
-He argued that transport in Spain “is well paid” and consumers pay for the product as they should in terms of transport, but the large logistics and companies that market the load without having trucks “keep up to 50 percent of the price of transport, and that has to be eradicated”.
-“We ask you to please take into account the seriousness of the situation and that we have no choice but to continue to be at a standstill if the main measure is not addressed,” he said. Source, Spanish: https://www.vozpopuli.com/espana/transportistas-paros-ministra.html

Brits to Face More Hurdles When Travelling to EU as Banks Impose Extra Charges on Them:
-Crédit Agricole, a French international banking group, has started charging holders of British bank cards making withdrawals at its ATMs in France €5, earlier this month. At the same time, British travellers in France have reported that the bank is also charging them €18 for cash transfers.
-The move, which will affect millions of travellers from the UK to France, is set to be followed by other banks in the bloc and is a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union.
-Up until now, British citizens have not been charged with additional fees when withdrawing and transferring money within the EU, as the bloc’s Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) prohibits the Member States from imposing extra fees on nationals of other EU countries. Instead, all EU citizens, regardless of their nationality, should be subject to the same domestic charges as the nationals of the country where they withdraw money.
-Yet, since the UK left the EU on December 31, 2020, British citizens no longer benefit from such rules. Full article: https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/brits-to-face-more-hurdles-when-travelling-to-eu-as-banks-impose-extra-charges-on-them/

Scientists find microplastics in blood for first time: Scientists have discovered microplastics in human blood for the first time, warning that the ubiquitous particles could also be making their way into organs. “This is the first time we have actually been able to detect and quantify” such microplastics in human blood, said Dick Vethaak, an ecotoxicologist at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. “This is proof that we have plastics in our body—and we shouldn’t,” he told AFP, calling for further research to investigate how it could be impacting health. Sinkholes as big as a skyscraper and as wide as a city street open up in the Arctic seafloor:
-Giant “sinkholes” – one of which could devour an entire city block holding six-story buildings – are appearing along the Arctic seafloor, as submerged permafrost thaws and disturbs the area, scientists have discovered.
-“We know that big changes are happening across the Arctic landscape, but this is the first time we’ve been able to deploy technology to see that changes are happening offshore too,” Charlie Paull, a geologist at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), said in a statement. “While the underwater sinkholes we have discovered are the result of longer-term, glacial-interglacial climate cycles, we know the Arctic is warming faster than any region on Earth,” added Paull, who co-led the research with Scott Dallimore from the Geological Survey of Canada and Natural Resources Canada, with an international team of researchers. SPAIN

The EU allows to Spain and Portugal to lower the price of energy: {Translation} 25-03-2022, 20:23
-Prior to the EU summit, a diplomat from a northern EU country had described Pedro Sánchez as a ‘Don Quixote’ tilting at windmills, given the rejection by northern countries of his proposals to lower the energy bill and his international tour to gather support and turn events around unexpectedly.
-The summit did not disappoint and had its small doses of EU epic: the prime minister even left the room for half an hour, annoyed by a journalist’s tweet that Sánchez was attending the summit with the intention of vetoing the text, despite Spanish diplomatic sources insisting at all times on Spain’s constructive spirit. After the meeting, Sánchez and the Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, appeared jointly before the press to claim victory. After almost ten hours of marathon negotiations, the EU-27 reached an agreement on joint gas purchases between European countries, with the aim of having greater negotiating power with third countries and differentiated treatment for Madrid and Lisbon.
-The President of the Government arrived at the second session of the summit with a joint proposal with Portugal for the EU club to recognise the Iberian Peninsula’s uniqueness as an energy island, given that gas connections with the rest of the continent do not even reach 3%. Trying to make a virtue out of necessity, Madrid and Lisbon argue that this particularity could allow the two countries to carry out interventionist measures on their own without affecting the rest of the European partners.
-In this initiative, the two capitals proposed a system to compensate combined cycle power plants that transform thermal energy from natural gas into electricity and that are currently being penalised by the soaring prices of this hydrocarbon and the repercussions of the war with Ukraine. In this way, these plants would receive economic compensation that would allow them to attend wholesale gas auctions at a lower price than they are paying for hydrocarbons, and this reduction would end up being passed on to the bills paid by families and companies.
-Although this is an advantage over operators in other countries, Madrid and Lisbon argue that distortions in the single market would be minimal due to the difficulty of moving gas within an EU club. In addition, there is an article in the European Treaties that allows for the activation of an emergency clause for an express and temporary legislative procedure in exceptional circumstances.
-In this way, Spain and Portugal were pursuing an ad hoc solution, due to the Community club’s reluctance to impose a common limit on gas prices for all European countries. This is a possibility that the countries of the North have somewhat derisively defined as the Gazprom Fund, as it could lead to the use of public money to end up financing the Russian energy giant. If this price cap is implemented without compensation of any kind, there is a danger that operators will decide to supply gas to other European countries outside the bloc, or even that national operators will prefer to export abroad, and this will end up causing severe supply cuts.
-Although Sánchez has been battling for months for a comprehensive reform of the pricing system, the EU has so far resisted to impose far-reaching measures such as changing the marginalist mechanism, whereby tariffs for all energy sources are aligned with those for gas, even if their production is cheaper. Last week, the European Commission opened up the possibility of using this extra income, the so-called “windfall profits”, to impose an extraordinary tax on electricity companies with the aim of using this money to help the groups hardest hit by the exorbitant rise in gas prices. This is an important change, as until now the EU executive has been in favour of using this revenue to increase investment in renewable energy sources and accelerate the European paradigm shift away from dependence on fossil fuels. The Hauliers’ Strike Is NOT Over- Gov’t Promises to Present a New Proposal in 2 or 3 Months!: {Translation} 25-03-2022, 21:02
-Despite the agreement reached by the Government with the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC), the sector’s representative body, the Platform for the Defence of Transport, which called the stoppages and is not part of this body, confirmed this afternoon that the demonstrations will continue after meeting with the Transport Minister, Raquel Sánchez. Its president, Manuel Hernández, explained to the media after the meeting, which lasted almost two hours, that the government has not given them a guarantee that they will be able to return to work from Monday without losing money. And that, he said, is not acceptable to the Platform.
-Hernández explained that the ministry has promised to present them with a draft of the law within two or three months to include the impossibility of contracting transport at a loss. This would be an advance on one of the points agreed between the government and the CNTC to help the sector. According to the agreement, Transport will present a draft bill to the CNTC by 31 July to apply the principles of the food chain law to the road haulage sector to ensure the fair use of subcontracting and the profitability of work in the sector, and then present it to the Council of Ministers.
-However, for Plataforma, this is not enough. Hernández has told the minister of the need to articulate some kind of transitional measure through a decree-law or similar figure to guarantee that transporters do not lose money for working until the law is definitively approved. Because, he said, “the situation of the sector is chaotic”. But Hernández has assured that Sánchez has told him that “he does not see it possible to approve a transitional decree-law”. For this reason, “and much to our regret, we continue with the strike”, said the president of Plataforma.
-Minutes after Hernández’s appearance, the Transport Minister assured in statements to La Sexta that all the Platform’s demands “are included in the agreement” reached with the major employers’ associations. The problem, she said, is that the drafting of any law or regulation “requires work and takes time” and this prevents the adoption of any transitional measure such as the one proposed by the strike organisers. Sánchez assured that they have “identified the problem” that the sector has regarding the need to ensure profitability. But he also added that they need time to address it. And that time is the months included in the agreement. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/economia/20220325/37yn5wglkvccpjl7pxsoq3aqyy.html

Spanish truckers protest in Madrid after rejecting new government aid package: March 25, 2022, 12:52 PM GMT+1
-Spain’s transport minister agreed to meet with striking truck drivers on Friday after they rejected a 1 billion euro ($1.10 billion) support package aimed at defusing a 12-day walkout over fuel prices that has caused sporadic goods shortages.
-Minister Raquel Sanchez announced the measures, which include a rebate of 0.20 euros per litre of fuel and a 1,200 euro bonus, after all-night talks with transport associations.
-But within hours, the unofficial truckers’ group that launched the strike on March 14, and which was excluded from talks with government, rejected the proposal and began blocking Madrid’s central La Castellana avenue. read more
-“We’re going to ask her that we be able to work at a dignified price…We want guarantees to be able to cover our production costs,” protest leader Manuel Hernandez told reporters from the centre of the Madrid march.
-Many of the protesters wore high-visibility jackets reminiscent of France’s gilets jaunes protests. Demonstrators also blocked Barcelona’s coastal ringroad and burned tires at a border crossing with Portugal.
-Shortly after the protests began Minister Sanchez agreed to meet the strike leaders, who she had initially dismissed as unrepresentative and linked to the far-right.
-“I have never had any problem meeting with them, but what we must celebrate today is this agreement…and that is what I am going to try to explain to them this afternoon,” she told state broadcaster TVE.
-Sanchez said all the truckers’ demands were included in the deal, so there was no reason to maintain the strike.
-“This seems like a temporary patch to us that doesn’t fix the problem at all,” said protestor Juan Jose Moral, as the angry crowd marched toward the transport ministry.
-The rebate on fuel prices, a quarter of which will be paid by oil companies, will also apply to other transport companies, she added. Bus, light truck, ambulance and taxi drivers will also receive – albeit smaller – bonuses.
-As part of the package, the government will approve a new line of state-backed credit lines with a 12 month-freeze on loan repayments, or so-called grace periods where companies are just required to pay interest and not the principal on a loan.
-The government has not disclosed the amount of the new liquidity loans to support mid-sized companies and households in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A price war between Repsol, Cepsa and BP- discounts of up to 14 cents per litre of fuel: {Translation} 25/03/2022 17:16
-The largest reductions are linked to the use of the relevant loyalty cards.
-The three main oil companies, Repsol, Cepsa and BP, have started a price war offering their customers discounts of between 10 and 14 cents per litre of fuel. This move comes at a time when fuel prices have slowed down their sharp increase, which in the case of petrol is 14% since the beginning of the year, and in diesel, 21.5%.
-Cepsa has a direct discount of 10 cents per litre, not conditional on future refuelling and accessible to all users, at the company’s 1,500 service stations throughout Spain. This measure will come into effect on 1 April and will remain in force until 30 June.
-In this way, private customers will be able to access savings of up to 25 cents/litre, which at current prices for a conventional 50-litre refuelling, is equivalent to a discount of around 15 euros, with the mere requirement of being a member of the ‘Porque Tú Vuelves’ programme.
-Likewise, professional customers will benefit from this contribution of 10 cents per litre in addition to current commercial discounts.
-For its part, BP will apply fuel price discounts to its customers of up to 14 cents per litre for professional hauliers depending on the size of the fleet. This is a direct, non-cumulative discount applicable to fleet customers with an active Routex card and applicable at BP service stations.
-It will also offer a maximum discount of 12 euro cents per litre to private customers through the ‘My BP’ card who adhere to the “Ahorro de Locos” promotion.
-Both types of discount will be in force from April to June and will be subject to monthly reviews.
-As for Repsol, it will lower the price of its fuels by 10 euro cents per litre for professional customers who pay with the Solred card at its more than 3,300 service stations in Spain. This discount is in addition to that already received by hauliers and the self-employed.
The discount will be applied from next Saturday until 30 June.
In addition, the company has also decided to extend by more than two months, until 30 June, the price reduction of 10 euro cents per litre on all its fuels to those private customers who pay with the free Waylet application. The initiative was launched on 16 March and, although it was initially going to be in force until 18 April, coinciding with the end of Easter, Repsol has decided to extend it. Ayamonte fishermen in Huelva: they cut off the bridge to Portugal with barricades and fires: {Translation, summary} 25/03/2022 18:21h
-Barricades and the burning of tyres and other material have prevented traffic from circulating this morning on the bridge over the Guadiana, which connects Spain and Portugal via Huelva, in a protest by fishermen from the Ayamonte area.
-The blocking of traffic on the infrastructure and accesses – with the participation of around fifty people – has lasted for an hour, when the Civil Guard has had to intervene to dissolve the mobilisation, while firefighters from the Provincial Consortium Against Fires have been mobilised to extinguish the fire.
-Sources consulted by this newspaper have indicated that the fishermen who have staged the protest are trying to prevent the population from going to Portugal to buy fish, as the sector is keeping the activity at a standstill. AXARQUIA

The recent rains did not stop to improve the situation of the reservoir of La Viñuela: {Translation} March 25, 2022, 15:00
-The rainfall of the last few days in the Axarquia region continues to be insufficient to alleviate the drought situation suffered by this region. In fact, the bulk of the rainfall recorded in the province of Malaga in the last 48 hours has been in the westernmost area.
-Thus, although at this hour it is still raining in the Axarquia region, the La Viñuela reservoir is still well below acceptable levels, with 27 cubic hectometres of water in storage. This represents just 16.36 percent of the capacity of the dam, which can store up to 165 cubic hectometres.
-The fact is that while in the western part of Malaga the rains have overflowed some rivers, in La Axarquía and specifically in the Viñuela reservoir, the largest in the province and the one with the least amount of water in the reservoir at the moment, only 9.8 litres per square metre have been recorded in 12 hours. At the Torrox station 14.4 litres were recorded in 12 hours; 15.4 in Alfarnatejo; and 7.2 in Torre del Mar. This system operates in such a way that travellers can buy a ticket at a price which includes the flight via Madrid’s Barajas airport to or from any of the airline’s 90 international destinations, most of which are in Europe and America, and the return rail journey to the 14 Spanish destinations which now form part of the scheme. The ticket also includes the local train service from Atocha or Chamartín stations in Madrid to the airport.
One of the advantages of this single-ticket system is that it costs less than paying separately for each part of the journey, and travellers are also guaranteed the offer of an alternative trip if they miss any of the connections. Train&Fly can be accessed at iberia.com, renfe.com and via travel agencies. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/malaga-part-renfe-20220325171715-nt.html

Malaga’s fishing sector back on strike: After announcing on Wednesday that they would call off their protest, representatives decided at a meeting on Thursday to wait until they know exactly what the government is offering in the way of help. At a meeting on Thursday between representatives of the industry from all over Andalucía, they reconsidered: most voted to go back on strike until they know for sure how much money the government is offering and what other measures they plan to put in place. The government is due to decide all this on Tuesday.
Some in the fishing industry are warning that they will not take their boats to sea again until the price of fuel drops or enough is done to make it worth their while to go back to work. “There’s no profit in fishing at present, so there’s no point in doing it,” sources say. UK

Covid-19 infections surge in most of UK as England nears record high: Covid-19 infections have risen sharply across most of the UK and are nearing record levels in England, while both Scotland and Wales have reached an all-time high, new figures show.
Across the UK as a whole, 4.26 million people were likely to have had coronavirus last week – just short of the 4.30 million in the first week of 2022, which was the highest total since estimates began.
Northern Ireland is the only nation where infections are believed to be falling, with levels having dropped for two weeks in a row, according to the Office for National Statistics. Russia- First Phase of War Over, Military Will Now Focus on Eastern Donbas: (March 25, 2022)
-Russia’s Defense Ministry said Friday that it has completed the first phase of its “special military operation” in Ukraine and will now focus on the eastern Donbas region, signaling that Moscow’s strategy might be shifting due to military losses and a stalled campaign.
-The statement was delivered at a briefing by Sergei Rudskoi, the head of the Russian general staff’s main operational department, who said that Russia’s objectives “of the first stage of the operation have generally been accomplished,” without elaborating.
-“The combat potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been considerably reduced, which, I emphasize once again, makes it possible to focus on the main efforts to achieve the main goal … [the] liberation of Donbas,” Rudskoi added, according to the Interfax news agency. Ukraine’s air defense and Air Force have been almost fully destroyed during the conflict, Russian officials also claimed, according to Interfax.  “The country’s navy has ceased to exist,” Rudskoi also said at the briefing. The Ukrainian military hasn’t issued a public comment. Photo:Alexander Ermochenko/Reuters. Remember the Big Microsoft Hack Announced Last Week?
7 Suspected Members of LAPSUS$ Hacker Gang, Aged 16 to 21, Arrested in U.K.:
-The City of London Police has arrested seven teenagers between the ages of 16 and 21 for their alleged connections to the prolific LAPSUS$ extortion gang that’s linked to a recent burst of attacks targeting NVIDIA, Samsung, Ubisoft, LG, Microsoft, and Okta.
-The development, which was first disclosed by BBC News, comes after a report from Bloomberg revealed that a 16-year-old Oxford-based teenager is the mastermind of the group. It’s not immediately clear if the minor is one among the arrested individuals. The said teen, under the online alias White or Breachbase, is alleged to have accumulated about $14 million in Bitcoin from hacking.
-“I had never heard about any of this until recently,” the teen’s father was quoted as saying to the broadcaster. “He’s never talked about any hacking, but he is very good on computers and spends a lot of time on the computer. I always thought he was playing games.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/03/7-suspected-members-of-lapsus-hacker.html

Big Tech Faces Crackdown as EU Negotiators Back Tough Law: Tech giants face sweeping changes to how they operate in the European Union after the bloc hammered out a deal on a new law that paves the way for multibillion euro fines and acquisition bans for the worst transgressors.
-The new Digital Markets Act, agreed on by negotiators in Brussels late Thursday, targets so-called gatekeeper companies – platforms like Facebook and Google – with the power to control distribution in their markets.
-Key rules lawmakers set for gatekeepers include:
*Making their messaging apps interoperable to prevent users being tied to one network
*Letting users choose a default search engine, web browser and virtual assistant when they buy a new smartphone
*Ensuring fair access conditions for their app stores
*Gaining explicit consent to combine personal data to target ads
*Banning the companies from ranking their own products higher than others
*Fines of as much as 10% of a company’s global annual sales will apply for an initial breach of the law, rising to 20% for repeat infringements. Companies that routinely violate the rules will be temporarily banned from conducting mergers and acquisitions.

SPAIN

Government proposes direct aid to end the hauliers’ strike in Spain:
-The Spanish government wants to close a deal with the striking hauliers this week to minimise the impact which rising fuel prices has had on their activity. In a meeting with the National Road Transport Committee on Thursday morning, they outlined plans for direct aid which would reduce fuel prices.

New drug multiplies survival rate for women with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer: An international study has found that patients given trastuzumab deruxtecan had an estimated overall survival rate of 94% after 12 months.
When trastuzumab deruxtecan was compared with trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1), the current standard of care for patients whose tumors have not responded to first-line treatment, it achieved much better results. According to the trial, which involved 524 people from 15 countries, the percentage of participants who were alive without disease progression at 12 months was 75.8%, compared to 34.1% for those who had been given trastuzumab emtansine. What’s more, the estimated 12-month overall survival rate was 94.1%, compared to 85.9% for T-DM1.

Energy Crisis- Brussels is presenting a range of possible measures, with their pros and cons, without betting on any of them, while waiting for the heads of government to decide at the summit on Thursday and Friday:
-The European Commission is keeping its hands to itself. Perhaps because it does not want to touch anything, perhaps because it does not want to take sides in the north, south, east or west of the European Union. Or perhaps it is because, at heart, the EU is the governments. Be it for one reason or another, the fact is that Brussels arrives on the eve of the European summit with a range of options, rather than guidelines, with their pros and cons, for intervening in the electricity market in the face of the energy crisis, exacerbated by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. And it leaves it to the heads of state and government to make the decisions on what to do. Changes to Spain’s Covid isolation rules come into force next week:
-From next week, Spain will be taking steps to deal with Covid-19 in much the same way as it does with flu. On Tuesday the Public Health Committee approved its ‘Strategy for Monitoring and Control of Covid-19’, so from 28 March people with no symptoms or only mild ones will no longer have to isolate,
-Only people who are classified as vulnerable and test positive will need to isolate, for a period of seven days, although the isolation rule will still be maintained in residential homes for the elderly and people in hospital, whether or not they have symptoms. However, there will also be a change in those circumstances: isolation will be for five days and will end after 24 hours symptom-free.
-The health authorities will no longer try to trace cases or count them, so there will be no more updates on overall Covid figures as there have been until now. Instead, the new strategy is to look for cases among the vulnerable population, as they are the people most likely to suffer complications from the virus.
-The Public Health Committee says this change is possible because of the high levels of immunity among the Spanish population. The new strategy was approved on a day when the accumulated incidence of Covid-19 fell again by nine points, to 436 cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. The health authorities have also reported 54,147 new infections and 350 deaths in the past four days. Supermarkets call for calm and rule out a general shortage problem:
-Despite the evident tension in the supply chain due to the indefinite stoppage of transport, supermarkets today called for calm and ruled out a problem of shortages on the shelves. The general secretary of the Asedas employers’ association, Felipe Medina, highlighted the “great commitment” of the distribution sector and sent a message of calm to consumers because they are working on the reorganization of the assortment and that the shelves have products of all varieties. categories. “A framework of great collaboration with suppliers is taking place,” Medina stressed.
-For his part, the president of the Spanish Association of Supermarket Chains (ACES), Aurelio del Pino, demanded that consumers responsibly carry out purchases and avoid massive stockpiles, which “far from solving the problem, complicate even more the management of stocks in stores. “We have supply problems, but there will be no shortage problems, the stores will have full food baskets available,” said Del Pino. Transport Crisis Update:
-Government has decided to bring forward the planned meeting with various carrier organizations one day to inform them of the specific measures that the Executive will take to deal with the energy and price crisis.
-It will be tomorrow (Thursday) when he holds a new meeting with the Goods Department of the National Committee for Road Transport, according to government sources.
-Buses, coaches, taxis and ambulances plan protests Sunday.
-But first, this afternoon (Wed), the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, will meet with the main business organizations in the passenger transport sector, that is, buses, coaches, taxis, VTC and ambulances, who have called a demonstration for this Sunday to demand that the Government articulate concrete and direct aid that compensates for the sharp increase in the price of energy. “I’ve said it to my team multiple times, I don’t have it in me anymore. I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top level anymore.

Dear Readers, as we are having several crises hit us simultaneously, I have decided to include 2 rather long news articles that discuss the situation in some depth. -Ed.

SPAIN

Six-Way WHAMMY- Agricultural protests, transport strikes, war, energy crisis, Covid and the Sahara fiasco bring legislature to a critical juncture: {Translation} 22/03/2022 15:33. Long article, but important info.
(Could  food, petrol or electricity rationing be on the horizon? PM Sanchez and the progressive leadership need to fix as much of this as they can, as fast as they can, or we could see a strong national swing of support to the right wing conservative parties, who may not be as supportive of services for foreigners as the current leadership. -Ed.)
-The Government’s mismanagement of the galloping rise in inflation following the Russian attack on Ukraine and the unilateral decision to hand over the Sahara to Morocco have brought the investiture to a critical point. This is what the bulk of its investiture partners and parliamentary allies have warned the government on Tuesday, demanding that it change the ‘drift’ it has entered if it does not want to remain ‘alone’ in Congress.
-On the one hand, there is weariness with the unilateralism with which the Executive is adopting its decisions: a complaint that has been repeated since the beginning of the legislature but which now joins the frontal rejection generated by the 180-degree turn towards the Sahara throughout the parliamentary arc, or the sending of arms to Ukraine in some groups such as Podemos and Bildu.
-On the other hand, there is deep concern about the economic and social situation. The government’s partners understand that the government is not gauging the situation correctly and their warnings focus on the government’s failure to act and listen to the sectors most affected by the rise in fuel prices. In this context, there is fear of a worsening of the situation over the next few days, leading to serious problems of shortages, which in turn fuels social unrest.
***The partners, against the PSOE***
-Bildu’s spokesperson in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua, warned that the situation on the streets is “unsustainable” and urged the government to “take action on the matter as quickly as possible”. Following this thread, the Basque spokeswoman demanded that the Socialist leader be “faithful to what he said he was going to do, to his government pact and his electoral programme” and warned him that if he continues to break his promises “he will be doing himself and the citizens a disservice”.
-His ERC counterpart, Gabriel Rufián, also acknowledged that the legislature is at a “critical” moment and focused on the Sahara issue. “The doubt is in exchange for what (Sánchez) has exchanged his principles”, he questioned. “You cannot abandon a people in the middle of the desert without giving explanations”. However, the Republican has given the government some more breathing space by pointing out that for them it was worse “how the negotiation of the labour reform was handled”, although he has squeezed UNO Podemos and urged it to consider its role in the coalition.
-In his opinion, the “toads” that the PSOE is forcing it to swallow are so many and of such magnitude that it should “reflect” on whether the members of this party are “more useful” to the people on the left outside or inside the Executive. With regard to the protests in the countryside, and with a view to the meeting that ERC will hold tomorrow with the government, Rufián has said that he will ask for “a big tax” on electricity companies and large fortunes for a direct aid fund. “Either the left gets its act together or the only thing left is Vox”, the pro-independence MEP warned.
***Podemos’ justification***
-Within the coalition, Pablo Echenique, from Unidas Podemos, regretted that the Socialists are distancing themselves from the majority of the investiture with ERC and Bildu. “When they want to increase military spending and abandon the Saharawis in the hands of the Moroccan dictatorship, it is inevitable that the PSOE is moving away from the majority of the investiture: this is not an opinion, it is information”, warned Echenique.
-Echenique also insists that the coalition government is not in danger because his party’s role is fundamental in tackling the energy crisis resulting from the war when the partners are moving towards right-wing policies. It is precisely this argument that they use to respond to the ERC’s statements, which cast doubt on their usefulness in the government.
-The spokesperson for Unidas Podemos considers that admitting Morocco’s greater autonomy over the Sahara is an “absolute mistake” and says that they will work to reverse Pedro Sánchez’s decision by putting pressure on the nationalist and pro-independence parties. Both Unidas Podemos in the government and the parliamentary group are very focused on the measures of the decree to alleviate the damage to the economy caused by the war in Ukraine, which will be approved on the 29th. “The economic consequences of the invasion of Ukraine are very serious and this week is decisive to approve measures to protect families and the most affected sectors”, Echenique insisted.
***A critical moment***
-For his part, the PDeCAT spokesman, Ferrán Bel, considered that although this legislature has been full of “key” and “difficult moments” – extensions of the state of alarm, European funds or labour reform – the current situation has “no precedent”. “Not even with the pandemic can a parallel be drawn with what awaits in the coming weeks”, he warned.
-Bel, however, has not focused so much on the short as on the medium term and has warned the government that this time the problem is not so much in the specific parliamentary arithmetic but in “the economic moment that may arise”. “It is going to be very difficult not only for the government but also for citizens and parliamentary groups,” he predicted.
-In a similar vein, the spokesman for Compromís, Joan Baldoví, defined the political moment as “especially complicated” and “the most critical of the legislature”. The Valencian politician criticised Sánchez for acting as if “he had an absolute majority” when it is his partners who make it “possible for him to be president of the government”. At the same time, the leader of Más País, Íñigo Errejón, has branded the government’s attitude as “suicidal” for giving the flag of the protests to the extreme right. “A progressive government cannot afford the luxury of not listening”, he charged.
***The PP: “Adapt to the situation”***
-The PP spokeswoman in Congress, Cuca Gamarra, has criticised the fact that in this context of growing unease among the population, the Government continues to increase spending with 22 ministries. “It is necessary for the Spanish government to adapt to the country’s economic situation”, said Gamarra, adding: “This is costing Spaniards a lot of money”.
-The PP spokeswoman has directly called for an end to Irene Montero’s Ministry of Equality and for its policies to be developed through other departments. “To ask for the disappearance of the Ministry of Equality is not to ask for the disappearance of equality policies”, Gamarra defended.
-Vox has also defended this idea of reducing the coalition government this Tuesday through its spokesman Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, it is also a measure that the party has been demanding since PSOE and Unidas Podemos signed the government pact. Vox also advocates ending subsidies to political parties. Large companies in the food sector warn of a collapse in supply due to the stoppage of transport: {Translation} :22/03/2022 15:54
-The indefinite strike by transporters is already straining the entire supply chain, especially in the agri-food sector. Numerous companies and cooperatives have been forced to temporarily close their plants due to the lack of both packaging and raw materials. This includes companies such as Calvo, Azucarera, Cuétara, Dcoop, JaenCoop, Agrosevilla and feed mills. In addition, large dairy and brewing multinationals admitted today, Tuesday, the risk of shortages of products for final consumption and the imminent halt of operations in their factories. Specifically, Danone warned that within 24 hours it will be forced to temporarily interrupt its activity in its four dairy product plants, as well as in the three natural mineral water plants it has in Spain.
-For its part, Lactalis today highlighted the “extreme” situation at its factories due to the transport protests and called for “dialogue”. In the brewing sector, the situation is also at a limit and close to shortages. In this scenario of shortages, Heikenen warned that if the situation continues, it will not be possible to serve beer to commercial outlets, bars and restaurants.
-If an agreement is not reached in the next few hours, Danone warned that it will be forced to take the “drastic decision” to stop the milk collection process and, as a consequence, the production process in its factories. It will also stop the subsequent transfer of finished product to food distribution chains. “This will lead to the interruption of the supply of both natural mineral water and dairy products at national level,” the company warned.
-In a note, Danone remarked that, until now, it has made every effort to maintain all its activity within normality “despite the difficulties caused by a difficult and very tense context”. However, the upsurge in stoppages is already beginning to affect the supply of essential raw materials for its products, such as whole milk and cream.
-In the case of the Lactalis Group Spain, its CEO, Ignacio Elola, denounced that “the milk plants are not receiving plastic, paper, cardboard, pallets or ingredients to prepare and package this essential foodstuff and the finished product is accumulating while the expiry date is running out as it is a perishable product”.
-The dairy industry has been at a standstill since Thursday 17 March due to the impossibility of manufacturing dairy products and then transporting them in lorries to supermarkets. The National Federation of Dairy Industries (Fenil) announced last week that it was forced to suspend its activity as a result of the indefinite strike by the transporters. Fenil warned at the time of the suspension of milk collection from livestock farms and the risk of “supplying products that are nutritionally basic in people’s diets, such as milk and dairy products”.
***No beer served***
-In the same vein, Heineken España also expressed its “great concern” about the impact that the transport stoppage is having on its operations. The brewery warned that if the situation continues, it will not be possible to serve its products to retail outlets, bars and restaurants, nor to stock up on raw materials due to the “violent” pickets that are preventing the company’s normal operations.
-The Cerveceros de España employers’ association warned a few days ago that the indefinite strike by the transporters would have an impact on the supply of beer, especially on the mainland, both in the distribution channel and in the on-trade”. In this sense, they highlighted the blockades being carried out on deliveries to supermarkets “given that deliveries to logistics platforms are being obstructed”.
***A “state problem”***
-Faced with the worsening of the strike, the business associations representing the large-scale consumer and primary sector (ACES, Agri-food Cooperatives, Aecoc, Anged, Asedas and FIAB) today considered it of the utmost urgency to put an end to a transport strike that “is already a state problem”. For this reason, from the value chain of the large-scale consumer sector, they called on the organisers to stop coercing the rest of the sectors, preventing them from carrying out their activity. The organisations also urged the government not to waste a single second in the implementation of the transport aid plan.
-“Faced with this situation, the distribution companies are working to adapt their assortment, trying to replace those products that are not reaching the point of sale with other alternatives, so that consumers can make their purchases as normally as possible”, the associations stressed in a note sent to the media.
-If unemployment continues, the damage to a sector that provides the Spanish economy with more than 4.5 million jobs and 20% of GDP could be irreparable, according to these business associations. The consumer goods sector put the losses in the first week of stoppages at 600 million euros with more than 100,000 jobs at risk. Each day of protests means an extra cost of 130 million euros “to be able to transport and redistribute food to points of sale throughout the country and avoid supply problems”, the FMCG value chain explained. Putin’s Bombers Could Devastate Ukraine But He’s Holding Back. Here’s Why: As destructive as the Ukraine war is, Russia is causing less damage and killing fewer civilians than it could, U.S. intelligence experts say.
-Russia’s conduct in the brutal war tells a different story than the widely accepted view that Vladimir Putin is intent on demolishing Ukraine and inflicting maximum civilian damage, and it reveals the Russian leader’s strategic balancing act. If Russia were more intentionally destructive, the clamoring for U.S. and NATO intervention would be louder. And if Russia were all-in, Putin might find himself with no way out. Instead, his goal is to take enough territory on the ground to have something to negotiate with, while putting the government of Ukraine in a position where they have to negotiate.
-“The destruction is massive,” a senior analyst working at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) tells Newsweek, “especially when compared with what Europeans and Americans are used to seeing.” But, the analyst says, the damage associated with a contested ground war involving peer opponents shouldn’t blind people to what is really happening. (The analyst requested anonymity in order to speak about classified matters.) “The heart of Kyiv has barely been touched. And almost all of the long-range strikes have been aimed at military targets.” In the capital, most observable to the west, Kyiv city authorities say that some 55 buildings have been damaged and that 222 people have died since February 24. It is a city of 2.8 million people. “If we merely convince ourselves that Russia is bombing indiscriminately, or [that] it is failing to inflict more harm because its personnel are not up to the task or because it is technically inept, then we are not seeing the real conflict.” In the analyst’s view, though the war has led to unprecedented destruction in the south and east, the Russian military has actually been showing restraint in its long-range attacks.
-“I know it’s hard … to swallow that the carnage and destruction could be much worse than it is,” says the DIA analyst. “But that’s what the facts show. This suggests to me, at least, that Putin is not intentionally attacking civilians, that perhaps he is mindful that he needs to limit damage in order to leave an out for negotiations.”
-As of the past weekend, in 24 days of conflict, Russia has flown some 1,400 strike sorties and delivered almost 1,000 missiles (by contrast, the United States flew more sorties and delivered more weapons in the first day of the 2003 Iraq war).

Microsoft source code breach may be much bigger than we thought- A huge gift to hackers:
-After allegedly gaining access to Microsoft’s Azure DevOps source code repositories over the weekend, the South American-based data extortion hacking group Lapsus$ has now made some of the company’s internal files available online.
-In a recent post on Telegram, the group shared a screenshot of Microsoft’s Azure DevOps account to show that they had hacked one of the company’s servers which contained the source code for Bing, Cortana and a number of other internal projects.
-Now though, Lapsus$ has made the source code for over 250 Microsoft projects available online in a 9GB torrent. According to the group, the torrent itself contains 90 percent of the source code for Bing and 45 percent of the source code for both Bing Maps and Cortana.
(With this new data now public, new hacks will be developed that are beyond the scope of anti-virus programs. Microsoft will release patches when available, so it is now more important than ever to keep your Windows computers fully updated. -Ed.)
