SPAIN
The EU allows to Spain and Portugal to lower the price of energy: {Translation} 25-03-2022, 20:23
-Prior to the EU summit, a diplomat from a northern EU country had described Pedro Sánchez as a ‘Don Quixote’ tilting at windmills, given the rejection by northern countries of his proposals to lower the energy bill and his international tour to gather support and turn events around unexpectedly.
-The summit did not disappoint and had its small doses of EU epic: the prime minister even left the room for half an hour, annoyed by a journalist’s tweet that Sánchez was attending the summit with the intention of vetoing the text, despite Spanish diplomatic sources insisting at all times on Spain’s constructive spirit. After the meeting, Sánchez and the Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, appeared jointly before the press to claim victory. After almost ten hours of marathon negotiations, the EU-27 reached an agreement on joint gas purchases between European countries, with the aim of having greater negotiating power with third countries and differentiated treatment for Madrid and Lisbon.
-The President of the Government arrived at the second session of the summit with a joint proposal with Portugal for the EU club to recognise the Iberian Peninsula’s uniqueness as an energy island, given that gas connections with the rest of the continent do not even reach 3%. Trying to make a virtue out of necessity, Madrid and Lisbon argue that this particularity could allow the two countries to carry out interventionist measures on their own without affecting the rest of the European partners.
-In this initiative, the two capitals proposed a system to compensate combined cycle power plants that transform thermal energy from natural gas into electricity and that are currently being penalised by the soaring prices of this hydrocarbon and the repercussions of the war with Ukraine. In this way, these plants would receive economic compensation that would allow them to attend wholesale gas auctions at a lower price than they are paying for hydrocarbons, and this reduction would end up being passed on to the bills paid by families and companies.
-Although this is an advantage over operators in other countries, Madrid and Lisbon argue that distortions in the single market would be minimal due to the difficulty of moving gas within an EU club. In addition, there is an article in the European Treaties that allows for the activation of an emergency clause for an express and temporary legislative procedure in exceptional circumstances.
-In this way, Spain and Portugal were pursuing an ad hoc solution, due to the Community club’s reluctance to impose a common limit on gas prices for all European countries. This is a possibility that the countries of the North have somewhat derisively defined as the Gazprom Fund, as it could lead to the use of public money to end up financing the Russian energy giant. If this price cap is implemented without compensation of any kind, there is a danger that operators will decide to supply gas to other European countries outside the bloc, or even that national operators will prefer to export abroad, and this will end up causing severe supply cuts.
-Although Sánchez has been battling for months for a comprehensive reform of the pricing system, the EU has so far resisted to impose far-reaching measures such as changing the marginalist mechanism, whereby tariffs for all energy sources are aligned with those for gas, even if their production is cheaper. Last week, the European Commission opened up the possibility of using this extra income, the so-called “windfall profits”, to impose an extraordinary tax on electricity companies with the aim of using this money to help the groups hardest hit by the exorbitant rise in gas prices. This is an important change, as until now the EU executive has been in favour of using this revenue to increase investment in renewable energy sources and accelerate the European paradigm shift away from dependence on fossil fuels. The Hauliers’ Strike Is NOT Over- Gov’t Promises to Present a New Proposal in 2 or 3 Months!: {Translation} 25-03-2022, 21:02
-Despite the agreement reached by the Government with the National Road Transport Committee (CNTC), the sector’s representative body, the Platform for the Defence of Transport, which called the stoppages and is not part of this body, confirmed this afternoon that the demonstrations will continue after meeting with the Transport Minister, Raquel Sánchez. Its president, Manuel Hernández, explained to the media after the meeting, which lasted almost two hours, that the government has not given them a guarantee that they will be able to return to work from Monday without losing money. And that, he said, is not acceptable to the Platform.
-Hernández explained that the ministry has promised to present them with a draft of the law within two or three months to include the impossibility of contracting transport at a loss. This would be an advance on one of the points agreed between the government and the CNTC to help the sector. According to the agreement, Transport will present a draft bill to the CNTC by 31 July to apply the principles of the food chain law to the road haulage sector to ensure the fair use of subcontracting and the profitability of work in the sector, and then present it to the Council of Ministers.
-However, for Plataforma, this is not enough. Hernández has told the minister of the need to articulate some kind of transitional measure through a decree-law or similar figure to guarantee that transporters do not lose money for working until the law is definitively approved. Because, he said, “the situation of the sector is chaotic”. But Hernández has assured that Sánchez has told him that “he does not see it possible to approve a transitional decree-law”. For this reason, “and much to our regret, we continue with the strike”, said the president of Plataforma.
-Minutes after Hernández’s appearance, the Transport Minister assured in statements to La Sexta that all the Platform’s demands “are included in the agreement” reached with the major employers’ associations. The problem, she said, is that the drafting of any law or regulation “requires work and takes time” and this prevents the adoption of any transitional measure such as the one proposed by the strike organisers. Sánchez assured that they have “identified the problem” that the sector has regarding the need to ensure profitability. But he also added that they need time to address it. And that time is the months included in the agreement. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/economia/20220325/37yn5wglkvccpjl7pxsoq3aqyy.html
Spanish truckers protest in Madrid after rejecting new government aid package: March 25, 2022, 12:52 PM GMT+1
-Spain’s transport minister agreed to meet with striking truck drivers on Friday after they rejected a 1 billion euro ($1.10 billion) support package aimed at defusing a 12-day walkout over fuel prices that has caused sporadic goods shortages.
-Minister Raquel Sanchez announced the measures, which include a rebate of 0.20 euros per litre of fuel and a 1,200 euro bonus, after all-night talks with transport associations.
-But within hours, the unofficial truckers’ group that launched the strike on March 14, and which was excluded from talks with government, rejected the proposal and began blocking Madrid’s central La Castellana avenue. read more
-“We’re going to ask her that we be able to work at a dignified price…We want guarantees to be able to cover our production costs,” protest leader Manuel Hernandez told reporters from the centre of the Madrid march.
-Many of the protesters wore high-visibility jackets reminiscent of France’s gilets jaunes protests. Demonstrators also blocked Barcelona’s coastal ringroad and burned tires at a border crossing with Portugal.
-Shortly after the protests began Minister Sanchez agreed to meet the strike leaders, who she had initially dismissed as unrepresentative and linked to the far-right.
-“I have never had any problem meeting with them, but what we must celebrate today is this agreement…and that is what I am going to try to explain to them this afternoon,” she told state broadcaster TVE.
-Sanchez said all the truckers’ demands were included in the deal, so there was no reason to maintain the strike.
-“This seems like a temporary patch to us that doesn’t fix the problem at all,” said protestor Juan Jose Moral, as the angry crowd marched toward the transport ministry.
-The rebate on fuel prices, a quarter of which will be paid by oil companies, will also apply to other transport companies, she added. Bus, light truck, ambulance and taxi drivers will also receive – albeit smaller – bonuses.
-As part of the package, the government will approve a new line of state-backed credit lines with a 12 month-freeze on loan repayments, or so-called grace periods where companies are just required to pay interest and not the principal on a loan.
-The government has not disclosed the amount of the new liquidity loans to support mid-sized companies and households in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A price war between Repsol, Cepsa and BP- discounts of up to 14 cents per litre of fuel: {Translation} 25/03/2022 17:16
-The largest reductions are linked to the use of the relevant loyalty cards.
-The three main oil companies, Repsol, Cepsa and BP, have started a price war offering their customers discounts of between 10 and 14 cents per litre of fuel. This move comes at a time when fuel prices have slowed down their sharp increase, which in the case of petrol is 14% since the beginning of the year, and in diesel, 21.5%.
-Cepsa has a direct discount of 10 cents per litre, not conditional on future refuelling and accessible to all users, at the company’s 1,500 service stations throughout Spain. This measure will come into effect on 1 April and will remain in force until 30 June.
-In this way, private customers will be able to access savings of up to 25 cents/litre, which at current prices for a conventional 50-litre refuelling, is equivalent to a discount of around 15 euros, with the mere requirement of being a member of the ‘Porque Tú Vuelves’ programme.
-Likewise, professional customers will benefit from this contribution of 10 cents per litre in addition to current commercial discounts.
-For its part, BP will apply fuel price discounts to its customers of up to 14 cents per litre for professional hauliers depending on the size of the fleet. This is a direct, non-cumulative discount applicable to fleet customers with an active Routex card and applicable at BP service stations.
-It will also offer a maximum discount of 12 euro cents per litre to private customers through the ‘My BP’ card who adhere to the “Ahorro de Locos” promotion.
-Both types of discount will be in force from April to June and will be subject to monthly reviews.
-As for Repsol, it will lower the price of its fuels by 10 euro cents per litre for professional customers who pay with the Solred card at its more than 3,300 service stations in Spain. This discount is in addition to that already received by hauliers and the self-employed.
The discount will be applied from next Saturday until 30 June.
In addition, the company has also decided to extend by more than two months, until 30 June, the price reduction of 10 euro cents per litre on all its fuels to those private customers who pay with the free Waylet application. The initiative was launched on 16 March and, although it was initially going to be in force until 18 April, coinciding with the end of Easter, Repsol has decided to extend it. Ayamonte fishermen in Huelva: they cut off the bridge to Portugal with barricades and fires: {Translation, summary} 25/03/2022 18:21h
-Barricades and the burning of tyres and other material have prevented traffic from circulating this morning on the bridge over the Guadiana, which connects Spain and Portugal via Huelva, in a protest by fishermen from the Ayamonte area.
-The blocking of traffic on the infrastructure and accesses – with the participation of around fifty people – has lasted for an hour, when the Civil Guard has had to intervene to dissolve the mobilisation, while firefighters from the Provincial Consortium Against Fires have been mobilised to extinguish the fire.
-Sources consulted by this newspaper have indicated that the fishermen who have staged the protest are trying to prevent the population from going to Portugal to buy fish, as the sector is keeping the activity at a standstill. The recent rains did not stop to improve the situation of the reservoir of La Viñuela: {Translation} March 25, 2022, 15:00
-The rainfall of the last few days in the Axarquia region continues to be insufficient to alleviate the drought situation suffered by this region. In fact, the bulk of the rainfall recorded in the province of Malaga in the last 48 hours has been in the westernmost area.-Thus, although at this hour it is still raining in the Axarquia region, the La Viñuela reservoir is still well below acceptable levels, with 27 cubic hectometres of water in storage. This represents just 16.36 percent of the capacity of the dam, which can store up to 165 cubic hectometres.
-The fact is that while in the western part of Malaga the rains have overflowed some rivers, in La Axarquía and specifically in the Viñuela reservoir, the largest in the province and the one with the least amount of water in the reservoir at the moment, only 9.8 litres per square metre have been recorded in 12 hours. At the Torrox station 14.4 litres were recorded in 12 hours; 15.4 in Alfarnatejo; and 7.2 in Torre del Mar. Malaga is now part of Renfe and Iberia’s Train&Fly scheme:
This system operates in such a way that travellers can buy a ticket at a price which includes the flight via Madrid’s Barajas airport to or from any of the airline’s 90 international destinations, most of which are in Europe and America, and the return rail journey to the 14 Spanish destinations which now form part of the scheme. The ticket also includes the local train service from Atocha or Chamartín stations in Madrid to the airport.
One of the advantages of this single-ticket system is that it costs less than paying separately for each part of the journey, and travellers are also guaranteed the offer of an alternative trip if they miss any of the connections. Train&Fly can be accessed at iberia.com, renfe.com and via travel agencies. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/malaga/malaga-part-renfe-20220325171715-nt.html
Malaga’s fishing sector back on strike: After announcing on Wednesday that they would call off their protest, representatives decided at a meeting on Thursday to wait until they know exactly what the government is offering in the way of help. At a meeting on Thursday between representatives of the industry from all over Andalucía, they reconsidered: most voted to go back on strike until they know for sure how much money the government is offering and what other measures they plan to put in place. The government is due to decide all this on Tuesday.
Some in the fishing industry are warning that they will not take their boats to sea again until the price of fuel drops or enough is done to make it worth their while to go back to work. “There’s no profit in fishing at present, so there’s no point in doing it,” sources say. Covid-19 infections surge in most of UK as England nears record high: Covid-19 infections have risen sharply across most of the UK and are nearing record levels in England, while both Scotland and Wales have reached an all-time high, new figures show.
Across the UK as a whole, 4.26 million people were likely to have had coronavirus last week – just short of the 4.30 million in the first week of 2022, which was the highest total since estimates began.
Northern Ireland is the only nation where infections are believed to be falling, with levels having dropped for two weeks in a row, according to the Office for National Statistics. Russia- First Phase of War Over, Military Will Now Focus on Eastern Donbas: (March 25, 2022)
-Russia’s Defense Ministry said Friday that it has completed the first phase of its “special military operation” in Ukraine and will now focus on the eastern Donbas region, signaling that Moscow’s strategy might be shifting due to military losses and a stalled campaign.
-The statement was delivered at a briefing by Sergei Rudskoi, the head of the Russian general staff’s main operational department, who said that Russia’s objectives “of the first stage of the operation have generally been accomplished,” without elaborating.
-“The combat potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been considerably reduced, which, I emphasize once again, makes it possible to focus on the main efforts to achieve the main goal … [the] liberation of Donbas,” Rudskoi added, according to the Interfax news agency. Ukraine’s air defense and Air Force have been almost fully destroyed during the conflict, Russian officials also claimed, according to Interfax. “The country’s navy has ceased to exist,” Rudskoi also said at the briefing. The Ukrainian military hasn’t issued a public comment. Photo:Alexander Ermochenko/Reuters. Remember the Big Microsoft Hack Announced Last Week?
7 Suspected Members of LAPSUS$ Hacker Gang, Aged 16 to 21, Arrested in U.K.:
-The City of London Police has arrested seven teenagers between the ages of 16 and 21 for their alleged connections to the prolific LAPSUS$ extortion gang that’s linked to a recent burst of attacks targeting NVIDIA, Samsung, Ubisoft, LG, Microsoft, and Okta.
-The development, which was first disclosed by BBC News, comes after a report from Bloomberg revealed that a 16-year-old Oxford-based teenager is the mastermind of the group. It’s not immediately clear if the minor is one among the arrested individuals. The said teen, under the online alias White or Breachbase, is alleged to have accumulated about $14 million in Bitcoin from hacking.
-“I had never heard about any of this until recently,” the teen’s father was quoted as saying to the broadcaster. “He’s never talked about any hacking, but he is very good on computers and spends a lot of time on the computer. I always thought he was playing games.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2022/03/7-suspected-members-of-lapsus-hacker.html
Big Tech Faces Crackdown as EU Negotiators Back Tough Law: Tech giants face sweeping changes to how they operate in the European Union after the bloc hammered out a deal on a new law that paves the way for multibillion euro fines and acquisition bans for the worst transgressors.
-The new Digital Markets Act, agreed on by negotiators in Brussels late Thursday, targets so-called gatekeeper companies – platforms like Facebook and Google – with the power to control distribution in their markets.

El Puente Christian Fellowship – Sunday Service
El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/El-Puente-Christian-Fellowship-105285888299225/or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).
St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.
