Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a freind/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
Socialist Admin Setbacks – Inability To Slow Inflation Leads To Strikes Demanding Higher Wages In Many Sectors; More of the New Progressive Laws Challenged (see article below this one): {DigameXtra, 9/5/23}
– Disappointed with Sanchez’ ineffective anti-inflation measures, labour groups take action. The strikes that are either in effect, or planned for action in coming weeks: Retail workers (Malaga), Court Officials (national), Air Europa pilots, Air Traffic Controllers (national) and Health Care Workers (regional & national). Farmers are dumping milk in Andalucía rather than sell it at a loss.
– Sanchez’ much touted anti-inflation measure, of giving €200 checks to disadvantaged families, provides the majority no relief and is seen as insignificant by struggling workers. One full cart of groceries does not alleviate raging inflation for the other 51 weeks of the year.
– Unemployment numbers only show improvements due to the gov’t changing the status of some work contracts. They now count people as annually employed in their new statistics, even if it is a temporary, renewable contract, with only a few months of work throughout the year. Previously these people were considered unemployed during periods when not receiving a paycheck. Now they have been subtracted from the unemployed numbers. Thus, when comparing the old figures with the old style stats, to current figures using the newly defined stats, it appears there is an improvement. But is a false comparison.
– The EU ministers continue to challenge new Spanish programs, complaining there is no proper accounting of expenditures, putting EU Recovery Funds at risk.
– Programs that help control energy prices are set to expire before next Winter. No effective measures to combat the water shortage or illegal immigration have been provided, yet they continue to throw money at dubious programs like offshore wind-farms and sex classes for 1st graders. Feminists are complaining that by promoting trans-sex programs the current administration is negating advances in women’s rights that took decades to achieve. Long-time key gas supplier Algeria is upset with Sanchez’ support for Morocco and their moves on Western Sahara.
– Meanwhile, the conservative parties continue to gain support in pre-election polls.

Constitutional Court Challenges Filed To Block Key Progressive Laws Recently Passed: {Translation, summary}
– The Constitutional Court (TC) has admitted for processing the appeal by the PP against the recent criminal reforms that repealed sedition and modified the embezzlement laws (EU Ministers also complained about these changes). Also accepted is the appeal of Vox against various articles of the so-called ‘trans law’, as reported Tuesday.
– Vox insisted, among other things, that the ‘trans law’ is “the law that does the most harm to women” because it “eliminates” their “identity” and allows, in their opinion, that “men who supposedly feel like women” enter “private spaces for women” such as “locker rooms, bathrooms, showers or prisons”. Even Sánchez’s main partners in Congress, ERC and EH Bildu, and his coalition government ally, Unidas Podemos, have strongly criticized the new housing guarantees he lauds: {Translation}
– In statements in Congress, both Unidas Podemos and the majority of the parties that habitually support the measures of the coalition government have shown themselves radically against this new measure, and while the purple formation accuses it of electoralism.
– Most of the left-wing parties believe that the Socialists only seek to mobilize the young vote and complain that they have not contacted their parliamentary partners. Both ERC and Bildu have pointed out that the guarantees of the Official Credit Institute (ICO) to finance home purchases is a model that has failed in other countries, such as Great Britain, and that repeating this model in the housing market is a “useless” measure.
– “It is to finance with public money the purchase of a home for a few, inflating prices and promoting indebtedness and the real estate bubble,” stresses the deputy from Bildu, who asks the Government to “get fully involved” in other issues such as taking measures to stop the high prices of the shopping cart.
– For his part, the BNG spokesman in Congress, Néstor Rego, has accused Sánchez of wanting to “scratch a few votes.” Rego has agreed with other formations that these initiatives can cause “an opposite effect” and cause housing prices to increase. As an alternative, he has proposed the transfer of powers to the regional administrations to be able to do public housing. Squatting is a much more serious problem than the official figures reflect: {Translation, summary}
– The spokesman for the Platform for People Affected by the Occupation, Ricardo Bravo, assures that the official government data underestimates the real problem of squatting in Spain and denounces that the new Housing Law will complicate things even more for the owners when it comes to recover their squatted homes.
– The Ministry of the Interior reflects that in 2022 there were 16,726 complaints of illegal squatting in Spain (3.2% less than the previous year). Is social alarm being created or is it really a more serious problem than the statistics reflect?
– It is a much more serious problem than the figures reflect. The Ministry of the Interior only collects complaints for usurpation or trespassing, but does not take into account another form of squatting that we have been denouncing for years, the ‘inquiosucation’, the one who enters a home with a contract and voluntarily stops paying. Nor does it take into account that many affected people decide not to report it because the court processes are very expensive, long and unreliable. So, many people affected look for faster ways through out-of-court solutions, such as hiring an eviction company or economic agreements for which they pay money to the offender, but even so, it is cheaper and faster than the judicial process.
– ‘Inquiocupas’, they are not considered to be squatters because they are defaulting tenants. However, there are legitimate defaulters and also people who seek to abuse the system. It is very easy to differentiate who is a defaulting tenant with no predisposition to pay, from one who is looking for a real solution, because in this case we see their files in Social Services, applications for rental assistance, negotiations with the landlord to lower the price… that is, we see voluntariness. When there is no such voluntariness, they are ‘inquiocupas’ who know how to take advantage of the system due to the perks offered to them by Royal Decree 11/2020.
– Bravo also says that homeowners are not the only victims of squatting, which is true because many victims are neighbours of buildings squatted by mafias. We are talking about thousands of families who suffer from this problem, who have to put up with problems of coexistence in their community or even bigger problems, such as drug trafficking, because there is a squatted flat in their urbanisation and yet they are not listed anywhere as victims of squatting.
– Does the government’s new housing law favour squatting, as some opposition parties denounce? Without issue it will worsen the situation for landlords because it is an excessively protective law for squatters. It does not regulate ‘inquiokupaciones’ and only extends the deadlines so that these squatters can lodge appeals and stay longer in the property. Furthermore, it obliges the small owner to present a document to certify that he is not a large landlord (5 or less properties) and, in assets belonging to banks or investment funds, these owners are obliged to offer a social rent to any vulnerable family, knowing that the control of all these assets is held by squatting mafias who make an economic profit. In other words, the entire management of the law and the bureaucratic burden is transferred to the owner, not the squatters. Furthermore, the resources of private landlords are used to provide housing solutions for vulnerable people, when this should be a state responsibility. The moment the state obliges private individuals to support these families, private property is put at risk. The State delegates its functions to the owners. Spain Considers Either Doubling Minimum Investment for Golden Visas or Abolishing the Program:
– Spain could become the next European country to abolish the Golden Visa Program following the proposal of a left-wing party negotiating the matter with the government. The Head of the Spanish Mas Pais party, Ingio Errejon, told reporters on Monday that he has reached a preliminary agreement with the Social Security Ministry that would terminate the Golden Visa Program.
– Spain’s Golden Visa scheme permits non-EU nationals to acquire residency in this country if they make an investment of at least €500,000.
– According to a report of El Pais, the government is considering either increasing the minimum amount of investment required for the Golden Visa Program or abolishing the scheme, which was proposed by the Mas Pais party.
– Errejon said that the golden visas encourage speculation in housing prices in this country, stressing that the program does not bring benefit to the national economy and expels the local population. “Spanish citizenship cannot be bought,” Errejon pointed out while stressing that the scheme has led to a “brutal” surge in housing prices and pushed locals out of their neighbourhoods without creating any new jobs. Puleva unilaterally breaks with the Andalusian farmers- it will not buy their milk: {Translation, summary}
– Puleva has broken off negotiations with Andalusian farmers, who were unwilling to accept the 15 percent drop in the price per litre proposed by the Lactalis group company. Puleva had offered them a reduction of 9 cents per litre and the Andalusian producers, for the most part, rejected this and began a campaign called “I throw away my milk” and every day they wasted 500,000 litres of milk as a means of pressure.
– Faced with the “war of attrition”, the company had no choice but to sit down at a negotiating table. But the Andalusian farmers did not like its proposal either- Puleva proposed to buy all the milk they produce every day, which would have prevented them from selling some litres to other companies that pay them more money for each litre of milk.
– In the end, Puleva has chosen not to give in and has issued a written statement announcing that it has “terminated the negotiating table without agreement”. Andalusians will be able to pick up medication prescribed by the SAS in European pharmacies: {Translation}
– Andalusians travelling to Europe will be able to pick up medication prescribed by Andalusian Health Service (SAS) professionals at pharmacies in the country they are visiting. In order to collect medication in another country, you must carry your health card. If this does not include a photograph, you must also bring an official identification document that does (ID card or passport).
– Andalusia is one of the first Spanish regions to offer this service, along with Aragon, the Canary Islands, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid and the Basque Country, according to a press release from the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs.
– The new service is possible thanks to the European innovation project called ‘Generic Cross Border eHealth Services in Spain’. The programme is funded by the European Executive Agency for Health and Digital (Hadea), under the CEF Telecom programme.
– Likewise, European citizens visiting Andalusia will also have the possibility to pick up medication prescribed by professionals from their home country’s health system in Andalusian pharmacies. The countries participating in the launch of the project are: Croatia, Poland, Portugal and Finland, with more countries joining gradually.

The illegal use of water in La Axarquía for the cultivation of subtropical crops creates a loss of 10 million euros: {Translation, summary}
– More than 250 of the 299 inspected wells were illegal.
– Allegedly, irrigation was being allowed outside the range of elevation 140, which is completely prohibited, with the consequent economic damage to farmers who were adjusting their irrigation to the legally established.
– The investigators inspected 453,008 square metres of subtropical crops, where they were able to verify the continuous extraction of public groundwater for several years in the body of water known as Metapelitas de Sierras Tejeda-Almijara through 299 exploitations, by means of wells, boreholes and ponds.
– According to a report by the Andalusian Regional Government’s Public Hydraulic Domain Service, which cooperated with the investigation, more than 250 of the 299 uses inspected were illegal, despite the serious water situation in the area.
– The damage caused by the illegal use of water for the cultivation of subtropical crops in the Axarquia region of Malaga could reach 10 million euros, according to the calculations of the Guardia Civil, which is carrying out an operation in which 26 people have already been arrested and 44 are being investigated.

VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
“Dirty Politics” – Velez-Malaga Town Hall government team forced to withdraw illegal advertising campaign: {Translation}
– The Electoral Board of Vélez-Málaga has forced the PSOE and GIPMTM government team to withdraw an advertising campaign for being illegal and has given them three working days to do so, a period which expires today.
– The secretary general of the Partido Popular, Rocío Ruiz, explained today at a press conference that the PP had submitted a letter to the Electoral Board “questioning the legality of an advertising campaign placed on billboards and bus shelters in most of the municipality, as well as on buses and other displays, in which they take credit for future improvements and works, which have not been awarded or even tendered”.
– Ruiz validated the reasons given by the PP. “The Electoral Board shows that this government team, made up of PSOE and GIPMTM, is playing dirty, that it is not complying with the rules and is thus forced to withdraw an advertising campaign. It is a shame that our Town Hall and this government team are once again in the news for not complying with the law”, lamented the ‘popular’ member of parliament.
– Thus, the letter from the Electoral Board explains: “This Electoral Board understands that we are faced with a clear case of ‘sale of achievements’, prohibited under the provisions of art. 50. 2 LOREG, and it is also clear from previous resolutions of the Provincial Electoral Board that institutional advertising, which in a period that does not coincide with the electoral campaign may be perfectly legal, becomes contrary to electoral regulations once the elections have been called, which is precisely what is happening in this case with the images in question, as they do not refer to any specific announcement of a public work or project in execution or foreseeable execution, but rather to alleged improvements introduced in the town of Vélez-Málaga by its Town Hall”.
– The letter ends by explaining: “Therefore, the Town Council of Velez-Malaga is required to remove all the posters/billboards installed in bus shelters, bus stops and similar spaces that have the characteristics described in the images within three days”.
– For Rocío Ruiz, this favourable resolution to the complaint of the ‘populares’ “makes it very clear who complies with the law and who believes to be above it”. “The residents of our land already know who governs us and have the opportunity to change this and bet on a much-needed change that will transform our municipality once and for all in the elections on 28 May,” Ruiz concluded. Football News- ‘Done deal’? Rumours of Messi leaving PSG for Saudi Arabia abound:
– Considered one of the greatest football players ever, Lionel Messi is widely rumoured to be leaving Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for an unnamed Saudi Arabian club, with a source telling AFP it’s a “done deal”. This would mark the end of an era, with the Argentine legend leaving football’s top tier for a desert kingdom now lavishing its oil wealth on sport.
– Messi will sign a “huge” deal with an as-yet-unnamed club, said the source, who is close to the negotiations that are taking place just months after the 35-year-old lifted the World Cup in Qatar.
“Messi is a done deal. He will play in Saudi Arabia next season,” the source told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The contract is exceptional. It’s huge. We are just finalising some small details,” added the source, who was not authorised to speak to media.
– There was no confirmation from Messi’s current club PSG, which noted simply that he was under contract until June 30 when contacted by AFP. Photo: Lewis Joly. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/sport/20230509-done-deal-rumours-of-messi-leaving-psg-for-saudi-arabia-abound
