COVID-19

All but seven districts of Andalusia are now at Covid level 0 and their restrictions are lifted: {Translation, 1st 5 paragraphs only} Updated: 06/10/2021 17:55
-The end of the restrictions and measures against Covid-19 is advancing in Andalusia. Thanks to the drop in the number of infections and hospitalisations, as well as the decrease in the incidence rate, this Thursday all the districts except the province of Almeria, Huelva Costa, Condado-Campiña, Costa del Sol and Seville capital have joined the level 0 health alert. This means that almost two thirds of the community are now living as they did before the pandemic, except for the use of masks indoors.
-These new level 0 areas join the whole of the provinces of Cádiz and Jaén, as well as the Sierra de Huelva, Córdoba North, Guadalquivir and capital, Granada capital and Granada Northeast. These are the areas in which the population has been living since last week without restrictions on capacity or timetables.
-In this way, and with the decision of the territorial committees that have been known this Wednesday, only seven health districts remain at level 1 alert. These are the areas where there are still certain restrictions on activity, although there are fewer and fewer of them. In fact, since last week the territories of the community that are on level 1 alert can have bars and nightclubs open until 5 am. In addition, bars can serve until one o’clock in the morning on the terrace and close at two o’clock.
-But what does alert level 0 mean? Basically it is a return to pre-pandemic normality except for the use of masks. As the Andalusian government has explained, it means that all restrictions on capacity and opening hours beyond the municipal regulations prior to the pandemic will disappear. The only element reminiscent of the health crisis is the use of masks indoors, which is still compulsory even at this level 0.
-The near-normal situation in almost all of Andalusia is largely the result of the vaccination process. With nearly 90 percent of the target population, i.e. those over 11 years of age, already immunised, the effects of the reduction in contagion and the increase in the number of cases are being felt.

Costa del Sol health district remains at alert Level 1 as the rest of Malaga province enjoys eased Covid measures: The entire province of Malaga has moved to coronavirus health alert Level 0, with the exception of the Costa del Sol health district, which will retain the restrictions on opening hours and capacity that bars, restaurants, shops and other businesses have endured since the start of the pandemic. Andalucía’s Covid-19 incidence rate keeps falling to reach 38.4:
The coronavirus cumulative incidence rate in Andalucía this Wednesday, 6 October 6, stands at 38.4 Covid cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is down 2.5 in 24 hours and some 13.11 lower than a week ago.
The region has registered 264 new coronavirus infections, a figure slightly higher than the 218 on Tuesday, but lower than the 321 a week ago, according to data from the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography (IECA).
The official Junta organisation has also counted 10 deaths, three less than the day before and six more than those of last Wednesday. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/andalucia/andalucias-covid19-incidence-20211006162500-nt.html

SPAIN

How and who will be penalized for having an empty home: {Translation} The coalition government of the PSOE and United We Can carry out the new Housing law , which will mainly control, in part, the price of rents, in addition to putting the focus on empty homes.
For this, the Executive plans to increase the Property and Real Estate Tax (IBI) to those large owners who have their homes empty .
Thus, the preliminary project plans to increase this tax to 150% for unoccupied flats; Sevilla.ABC reports that the measure will affect homeowners who have more than four homes, and at least two of them have to be vacant for a period of two years or more.
When this punishment is delimited to the owner, it will be the city council that will decide whether to apply the surcharge or not.
The new housing law has clashed with the coalition government. Ministry of Economy Nadia Calviño’s was against rent control, considering that it affects legal security in Spain, something that the CEOE also shares.
On the part of United We Can, it was a condition to be made to approve the next Budgets. The formation of Ione Belarra threatened not to support them if these housing regulations were not carried out. The European Parliament “micro manages” local neighborhoods, requires a speed limit to 30km/h in all residential areas: In a resolution that seeks to reduce fatal accidents, the European Parliament has proposed a battery of measures to put an end to deaths, 22,700 each year, on the roads of the EU. MEPs note that mortality reduction has stalled in recent years and the EU did not achieve its goal of cut deaths by half from 2010 to 2020.
As the main proposal, the European Parliament demands to establish a limit of 30 kilometers per hour in residential areas and those in which there is a high number of cyclists and pedestrians.

Anti-Piracy Coalition Takes Control of Dozens of Pirate IPTV Domains: The powerful global anti-piracy coalition Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment has taken over yet more pirate IPTV-related domains. The latest wave includes more than three dozen new additions to a rapidly growing list. All indications suggest that ACE gave the suppliers an ultimatum – shut down and hand over your domains or face more vigorous legal action.
-Those taken down include, but are not limited to:
Abon-sat.com, abon-iptv-ott.com, king-platinum-iptv.com, electrotv-sat.com, electro-tvsat.com, electro-tv-sat.com, electrotvsat.net, electro-tv-sat.net, king-premium-iptv.com, king-platinum-iptv.com, salah-sat.com, volkatvpro2.com and volkatv-pro2.com. Google to turn on 2-factor authentication(2SA or 2SV, same thing) by default for 150 million users: Google has announced plans to automatically enroll about 150 million users into its 2SA scheme by the end of the year as part of its ongoing efforts to prevent unauthorized access to accounts and improve security.
In addition, the internet giant said it also intends to require 2 million YouTube creators to switch on the setting to protect their channels from potential takeover attacks. Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/10/google-to-turns-on-2-factor.html
(Note: 2SV or 2SA are the same thing, it is also called 2FA.
These are: 2 Step Verification, 2 Step Authentication and 2 Factor Authentication.
It is where you not only provide your user name and password to log-in, but must also provide a security code sent to your mobile as a text msg or sent by email. This makes signing in more time consuming and if you use a mobile to receive the codes, and lose the phone, you get locked out. Recovering the account if you can’t get the codes can take days of hassle with customer support!
This really has very little to do with security, if you use a proper password with at least 13 mixed characters of  upper and lower case letters, numbers and punctuation marks, that is virtually un-hackable, unless you are tricked into giving the password out.
The real reason for 2SA is when they send a code to your smartphone, they get your exact location, within a few meters. Having that location adds a lot of value to the data of yours that they are collecting and selling to cover the cost of these free services. So if you use 2SA, I strongly suggest you set it to send security codes to your email, NOT a text to your mobile. That way they can’t track your movements and you will still be able to get the security codes in the case you mis-place your mobile. -Ed.)

Pre-planning your funeral is a thoughtful and responsible way to show you care about your family.
Funerals are no easy task. There are numerous considerations to factor in, including logistics, food and drink, casket purchase and burial grounds. A loved one’s death brings immense emotional strain to any family, and the question of financing and arrangements only exacerbates the stress.

Purchasing a funeral plan with Golden Leaves enables you to plan, design and pay for your funeral services in advance.

Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment. Please email or call first. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa.
Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture.
Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites.
In the 2 photos below you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.
We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge.
Here is a link to a short video showing the results.
https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo
We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

SPAIN

Spain to give third dose to over 70s at same time as flu dose: {Translation, summary} Updated: 05/10/2021, 19:34h
-The over-70s will receive the third dose of the Covid vaccine in Spain, regardless of their state of health or whether or not they live in residential homes. The Public Health Commission, in which all the autonomous communities are represented, has given the green light to the inoculation of a booster dose for the elderly and has recommended doing so at the same time as the flu campaign.
-The advice of the technicians of the autonomous regions and the Ministry of Health is to start on 25 October with people over 70 years of age and continue with those over 65 years of age, provided that six months have passed since the last dose of the Covid vaccine. This time has already been exceeded by the vast majority of the elderly who were the first to be immunised in Spain. The booster dose will be made with an RNA technology vaccine, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
-The decision was taken on Tuesday with only the representatives of Madrid and Galicia voting against. The Community of Madrid expressed its disagreement because “there is still no scientific evidence to administer the booster dose. There is no urgency to administer it,” said sources from the Madrid Regional Ministry. The two communities are committed to focusing on starting the flu vaccination campaign for those over 65 years of age. However, other regional governments, such as Castilla-La Mancha, had asked to start the double immunisation, flu plus Covid booster, from the age of 65.
-Now the final green light is in the hands of the health ministers at the Interterritorial Health Council to be held this Wednesday.
-The Ministry of Health and the councillors had already approved administering the third dose to the elderly living in residences because there were sufficient doses and it was necessary to protect the most vulnerable. The Government plans to punish banks and oil companies with a  minimum tax rate of 18%: The intention is that, in principle, the same scheme that was already thought in 2018 is followed. Then it was already agreed between PSOE and Podemos a minimum rate of 15% general and 18% for these two areas. The accounts of that year did not go ahead and the measure was parked by the Covid-19. France threatens to cut off UK’s energy again in new fishing row:
Earlier this year, France threatened to cut off energy during a dispute over fishing rights in the sea off Jersey’s coast. France has again threatened to cut the UK off from energy supplies if the terms of the Brexit deal aren’t stuck to.
Asked what actions could be taken, Mr Beaune pointed to both UK exports to France and European energy exports to the UK.
“The UK depends on our energy exports, they think they can live alone while also beating up on Europe and, given that it doesn’t work, they engage in aggressive one-upmanship,” he added.
His comments came after Paris became angered by a series of application rejections to fish in British waters. Full article: https://news.sky.com/story/france-threatens-to-again-cut-off-uks-energy-in-brexit-row-12426857

Inflammatory micro clots in blood of individuals suffering from Long COVID: New research indicates that an overload of various inflammatory molecules, literally “trapped” inside insoluble microscopic blood clots (micro clots), might be the cause of some of the lingering symptoms experienced by individuals with Long COVID.
-The findings have since been peer-reviewed and published in the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology in August 2021.
“We found high levels of various inflammatory molecules trapped in micro clots present in the blood of individuals with Long COVID. Some of the trapped molecules contain clotting proteins such as fibrinogen, as well as alpha(2)-antiplasmin,” Prof Pretorius explains.
-“Of particular interest is the simultaneous presence of persistent anomalous micro clots and a pathological fibrinolytic system,” they write in the research paper. This implies that the plasmin and antiplasmin balance may be central to pathologies in Long COVID, and provides further evidence that COVID-19, and now Long COVID, have significant cardiovascular and clotting pathologies. Fakebook, WhatsApp and Instagram Back Online After 7hr Outage, But Some Users Are Still Reporting Problems: Their explanation? “Routine maintenance on Facebook’s network stitching together its data centers caused Monday’s collapse of its global system for more than six hours,” the company said on Tuesday. (Like they couldn’t do FB maintenance without taking WhatsApp and Instagram totally off line for 7hrs? Yeah, right. If that’s true, that it was for scheduled “routine maintenance”, then why were no warnings issued of possible downtime to the millions of businesses that were forced to take an unexpected day off?  FB does not do that type of maintenance during the business hours in the US/EU to avoid this exact problem. Just more Zuckerberg BS. -Ed)

4 Big Takeaways From the Facebook Whistleblower Congressional Hearing Tuesday:
-At the US Senate on Tuesday, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, a former Facebook project manage, testified that the social media site’s products “harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy,” and that congressional intervention is needed.
-The hearing came in the wake of Haugen leaking tens of thousands of pages of company documents to senators showing that Facebook has failed to fix numerous problems that it’s long known about, and in some cases made them worse.
-“I think we’re going to look back 20 years from now and all of us are going to be like, ‘What the hell were we thinking,’ when we recognize the damage that [Facebook] has done to a generation,” Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan said.

-Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, during an interview on Canal Sur Radio, picked up by Europa Press, in which he stressed that the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants at seven days stands at 16, which shows that the fifth wave is “overcome” although not the pandemic.
-The 14-day cumulative incidence remains at a low risk level with 42.7 points per 100,000 inhabitants, down 1.7 points in 48 hours and 14.5 points in a week. The 199 positives recorded over the weekend are the lowest figure in the last week
-The region recorded a decrease of 26 hospitalised by Covid-19 compared to last Saturday to a total of 285, which represents a decrease of 83 in the comparative interweekly, while patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) down three in the last 48 hours to 85, 19 less than those reported seven days ago.
-Malaga is the province with the most hospitalised patients with 76 and 19 ICU patients, followed by Seville with 74 and 22 in ICU, Almeria with 33 and 15 in ICU, Granada with 29 and eight in ICU, Cordoba with 23 and ten in ICU, Jaen with 22 and two in ICU, Cadiz with 15 and six in ICU and Huelva with 13 and three in ICU. Lava flow increases from the La Palma volcano as experts detect an increase in explosive activity: There is no sign, for now, that the lava spewing from the La Palma volcano in Spain’s Canary Islands will decrease anytime soon. On the contrary, volcanologists working in the Cumbre Vieja area have detected an increase in explosive activity in recent hours, and they have not ruled out the appearance of new ‘mouths’, according to a report by the Pevolca volcanic emergency plan experts. The affected area has now grown to 399 hectares, some 52.5 more than the previous day.
In addition, the group, that is in charge of managing the volcano crisis, has ordered the evacuation of the scientists and emergency service personnel working in the areas near the lava flow after the deterioration of air quality in the locality.

Energy Bills Outrage- The Eurogroup denies any responsibility, insists on supporting the energy transition despite the gas crisis:
-Some ministers like those of Spain, Nadia calviño, or France, Bruno Lemaire, presented a proposal with some ideas to try to counteract the rise in prices and in particular the Spanish representative demanded an “urgent and strong” attitude on the part of the European Commission to stop the situation.
-The Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, responded that in the coming days the community executive will present a package of measures that countries can use to moderate the market without violating state aid rules. But the message that everyone, including the president of the Eurogroup, Paschal Donohoe, repeated was that it would be a mistake to blame this situation on the European policy of the Green Deal. “The energy transition is not the problem, but the solution,” Gentiloni said. Airbag safety recall for up to 300,000 Citroën and DS vehicles:
The European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products (Rapex) has reported an airbag inflator problem in several models of the Citroën and DS vehicle range manufactured between 2009 and 2017, which could affect some 300,000 vehicles.
The affected models are:
-Citroën C3 V3 manufactured between September 2009 and January 2017.
-Citroën C4 V2 and DS4 manufactured between September 2010 and February 2017.
-DS3 manufactured between October 2009 and October 2016.
-DS5 manufactured between June 2011 and August 2016.
Spain’s OCU consumer association said that it understands that the vehicle manufacturer will contact owners to have the faulty part replaced. However, the OCU aslo advises owners of these models to contact Citroën and DS customer services direct to find out if their vehicle is among those affected. A Very Bad Day For the Fakebook Empire: Services Knocked Offline, A Massive Data Hack & Customer Abuse Exposed, All In One Day!!!
See articles below. Rumours are circulating in techie forums that Fakebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are under attack from several vectors, groups of insider “white hat” hackers and disgruntled employees, who have reached their limits of accepting the abuse and monetization of social media users. Of course, FB will blame one of their 3rd party service providers, citing human error as the cause of the outage, as they typically do. However, it is very unlikely a single entity took down all these different FB services simultaneously; more likely it’s a coordinated effort by several groups. While this is going on, Fakebook is also currently fighting many huge lawsuits and criminal prosecutions by gov’ts worldwide. Large fines and settlements have already been paid by Zuckerberg this year, and he is appealing many others. Fakebook will not go down without a long, drawn out battle, but it may be doomed to follow the steps of  it’s predecessor, MySpace, into digital oblivion! -Ed.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp hit by global outage, worst since 2008: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp went offline for users across the globe, the social media giant said on Monday, as it worked on restoring the services after being hit by one of its longest outages. Facebook acknowledged users were having trouble accessing its apps but did not provide any specifics about the nature of the problem or how many were affected by the outage. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Facebook tweeted about 30 minutes after the first reports of the outage.
Facebook has experienced similar widespread outages with its suite of apps this year in March and July.
Several users using their Facebook credentials to log in to third-party apps such as Pokemon Go and Match Masters were also facing issues. Full article: https://www.reuters.com/technology/facebook-instagram-down-thousands-users-downdetectorcom-2021-10-04/

1.5 Billion Facebook Users Personal Information Posted for Sale After Hack: Personal information from roughly 1.5 billion worldwide Facebook users was allegedly put up for sale following a recent leak. A member of a known forum for hackers claimed to be in possession of the information in late September and offered to sell it in chunks to others on the forum, according to a report from Privacy Affairs. One user claimed to have gotten a quote of $5,000 for the information of 1 million users.
-The hacker allegedly in possession of the leaked information claimed that it included the following for each Facebook account: name, email address, location, gender, phone number and user ID.
-Samples shared by the user appear to have been authentic, according to Privacy Affairs. The outlet also checked the information against previous leaks and found that alleged info was a legitimately new leak, not old data being resold. Full article:

Facebook ignores damages to it’s users to increase profits- the secrets that have exposed the toxicity of the social network: The vast empire of Mark Zuckerberg– and that also includes Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger– requested internal studies to better understand how their platforms affect the health of public debate and alter the mental stability of the millions of adolescents who use their products. The company then tried to bury those results confirming damage to users. Up to now.
Frances Haugen worked in the department of Civic Integrity, which Facebook dissolved shortly after the US presidential elections in November 2020. It was then that he chose to resign and leak those revealing documents to the press and federal authorities. Some documents confirm that the company knew and decided to ignore dangers to users. “There were constant conflicts of interest between what is good for the public and what is good for Facebook. And he always chose to optimize his own interest, to earn more money, ”the 37-year-old computer engineer explained during the early hours of Monday on ’60 minutes’, a prime-time television program. On Tuesday he will appear to testify before Congress. Full article: https://spainsnews.com/facebook-lies-to-you-the-secrets-that-have-exposed-the-toxicity-of-the-social-network/

Recommendations & Requests

Recommendation for Liz The English Nurse: We had cause to use the services of Liz and her team when mums friends alerted me that she was not well and needed attention. I contacted Liz who gained access the same day to access my mum and put in place an immediate care action plan to get her to a healthy and stable position to allow me to take mum back to the UK. This was achieved with nursing and full time care and mum is now back in the UK and doing very well.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Liz and her team.

The Karavaning collective will make a protest march in Nerja and Torre del Mar: {Translation} The State Platform of KAravaning (lapeka.org), has called its members and supporters to a protest march through the towns of Nerja and Torre del Mar which will take place on 22, 23 and 24 October. Both towns are well known in the caravanning world for their restrictive by-laws, not allowing overnight stays in the case of Torre del Mar and not even allowing parking in the case of Nerja.
The association considers these stances to be clearly discriminatory, as they are not based on safety arguments and contradict the guidelines set by the DGT for local authorities to regulate their parking spaces. The Pandora Papers- A new global investigation on tax evasion exposes world leaders and sports figures: It has been baptized as Pandora Papers and there are almost 12 million secret documents on the fiscal management of some of the most powerful political leaders in the world. The investigation led by the International Research Consortium uncovers legal and illegal uses of a system that are under suspicion on five continents and analyzes the role of the United States and some tax havens in the alleged laundering of billions of dollars.
The names of some leaders, such as the President of Chile Sebastián Piñera, and Toni Blair, British Prime Minister will appear. The investigation investigates the offshore business of the King of Jordan; the presidents of Ecuador, Paraguay, Ukraine and Kenya; of the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Mercury’s closeup- European-Japanese space mission returns its 1st photos: A joint European-Japanese spacecraft got its first glimpse of Mercury as it swung by the solar system’s innermost planet while on a mission to deliver two probes into orbit in 2025.
After swooping past Mercury at altitudes of under 200 kilometres, the spacecraft took a low-resolution black-and-white photo with one of its monitoring cameras before zipping off again.
The European Space Agency said the captured image shows the Northern Hemisphere and Mercury’s characteristic pock-marked features, among them the 166-kilometre-wide Lermontov crater. Photo:ESA/AP. Full article: https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/mercury-photo-space-bepicolombo-1.6197837

During this time of uncertainty, God’s word reminds us that the Gospel shines brightest in times of darkness. We are a Bible based Church community continuing to help people find their way to God through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

El Puente Christian Fellowship – Sunday Service
El Puente Christian Fellowship is a loving, multi-national, Bible believing community of Christ, who meet each Sunday at 11 am to worship The Lord. We enjoy a time of worship with contemporary songs and traditional hymns, and a message brought to us by one of the Elders or a visiting speaker.
The church meeting hall is situated underneath Maroma Inmobiliaria Puente Don Manuel, Cruce de Periana – 29713.
Full directions and further information can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/El-Puente-Christian-Fellowship-105285888299225/or please contact us by email on elpuentechristianfellowship@gmail.com. For those who cannot join us in person, we aim to stream Sunday services via the Facebook page (subject to a good internet connection!).

St George’s Church Málaga: We are part of the Church of England in Spain covering the area from Torremolinos in the west to the outskirts of Nerja in the east and to the northern edge of Malaga province.
We have three worship centres, in Velez-Málaga, Málaga city and Salinas. Everyone is welcome to our Sunday services in English, and you can also contact us to enquire about baptisms, marriage blessings, funerals, and house blessings.
Father Louis, our Chaplain, is available for counsel and support, regardless of anyone’s beliefs or background. We aspire to be a welcoming and inclusive community, open to all people seeking faith and friendship.
If you can’t get to church, we live-stream our Sunday services on Facebook, and also gather on Zoom for an informal service on Wednesday mornings.
Sign up for our newsletter by emailing Father Louis at malagachaplain@gmail.com to receive login details, and news of other future events. We look forward to welcoming you and being of service.

Recommendations & Requests

E-Book recommendations: Reply to Carole.
Great suggestion. It is very hit and miss with e books. I have just joined a book club and we choose a book to read every month. Just finished The Star giver by JO JO Moynes, really good, introduced me to another author. I am now reading The Crow Trap by Ann Cleeves, she writes the Vera TV series again a good book.
Also, we have a group of friends who pass books around to each other. Read a good one No time for goodbye, by Linwood Barclay.
I have written one myself The Spanish Connection by Maggie Howard available on Kindle bit racy!!!

The rate of Covid remains low in Malaga and there is hardly 66 new cases: {Translation} Updated: 1OCT21, 13:32
-Covid continues to fall. The rate continues to fall, the pressure on care is decreasing and this Friday only 66 new cases were reported. The number of people infected is 27 times lower than at the end of January, when the relaxation of the Christmas season restrictions paid off. But three more deaths from the virus are to be regretted.
-The province recorded an incidence of 56.1 positives per 100,000 inhabitants; 2.9 points less than on Thursday and very close to the rate of 50 that would place it in the low risk level of spread of Covid. This is the same downward trend in Andalusia, which went from 50.1 to 47.8 between the two days, and in Malaga city, which dropped from 51.9 to 50.5.
-In addition, the number of infections continues to be below one hundred. This has been the case throughout this week, which represents an epidemiological improvement, since the previous week there were days when this threshold was exceeded.
-The three deaths with Covid recorded in the last few hours bring the cumulative number of deaths since March 2020 to 1,963.
-Those cured are three times more than those newly infected. Exactly 213 discharged compared to 66 more infected.
-The pressure on care continues to decrease. There are 88 patients in hospital, 17 of whom are in the ICU. This is less than the 91 and 18 registered on Thursday, respectively, and is the lowest figure in the last three months. Merck says its experimental pill for people sick with COVID-19 reduced hospitalizations and deaths by half: Early results showed patients who received molnupiravir, within five days of COVID-19 symptoms had about half the rate of hospitalization and death as those who received a dummy pill.
The study tracked 775 adults with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 who were considered high risk for severe disease because of health problems such as obesity, diabetes or heart disease. The results have not been reviewed by outside experts, the usual procedure for vetting new medical research.
Among patients taking molnupiravir, 7.3% were either hospitalized or died at the end of 30 days, compared with 14.1% of those getting the dummy pill. After that time period, there were no deaths among those who received the drug, compared with eight in the placebo group, according to Merck. ‘GB’ Car Stickers No Longer Valid for UK Travellers Driving in EU: British nationals will no longer be allowed to drive outside the country with a car that has the over a-century-old “GB” sticker, as it will be replaced with the post-Brexit one that says “UK”.
The “GB” sticker, which meant Great Britain and was valid for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland drivers, was widely used by Britons while travelling outside the country, and it served as an identity token.
Now, with this decision entering force on September 28, it has to be replaced with one that says “UK”. Those that fail to follow the rule can miss their visit to a particular country as the entrance with those stickers won’t be permitted. BUSINESS OWNER ALERT- Fakebook Has Severely Cut the Traffic to Your Business Page, Blocks non-FB members from viewing business pages: It started in Belgium 5 years ago. “In Belgium, Facebook will no longer allow non-members of its social network site to access Facebook pages of companies or organizations.” (https://euobserver.com/digital/131365)
It has now spread to Spain. Most of the business FB pages I checked, including gov’t pages, are now only available if you are signed into FB, even if the page owner has the “View Setting” set to public! There are a few exceptions, but these are few and shrinking in number. FB has not yet responded to my inquiries regarding why some biz pages display for people not signed into FB and other pages don’t, and to honest, I would be surprised if they replied. While I am sure FB mentioned this is some obscure update notice that no one reads, most businesses  will be unaware they are now getting far less exposure.
If you advertise on FB you should be aware that the potential traffic to your pages has been heavily reduced. If you pay FB for ads, you are getting much less for your money! People looking for you in Google search may see a link to your FB page, but it won’t open unless they sign in.
Many people now refuse to have a FB account due to well documented privacy concerns, censorship and dominance of advertising. And despite what Fakebook says, their membership is shrinking, as very few people under 45 use it anymore, and the older users are a shrinking population. So a significant segment of the population will not find your business if you rely solely on Fakebook for your internet presence. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2020/08/11/facebook-faces-shrinking-popularity-but-researchers-warn-it-may-be-too-big-to-fail/)
Every business should have their own private website to maximize their internet exposure. Your biz website is the business card for the 21st century. DoctorLaptop can build you a custom website on a free server (no annual hosting fees) for as little as €75. -Ed.

Apple Pay Can be Abused to Make Contactless Payments From Locked iPhones: Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed an unpatched flaw in Apple Pay that attackers could abuse to make an unauthorized Visa payment with a locked iPhone by taking advantage of the Express Travel mode set up in the device’s wallet.
“An attacker only needs a stolen, powered on iPhone. The transactions could also be relayed from an iPhone inside someone’s bag, without their knowledge,” a group of academics from the University of Birmingham and University of Surrey said. “The attacker needs no assistance from the merchant and backend fraud detection checks have not stopped any of our test payments.” Full article: https://thehackernews.com/2021/10/apple-pay-can-be-abused-to-make.html

Beware of Fake Amnesty International Antivirus for “Pegasus Malware” that Infects PCs with Malware: “Adversaries have set up a phony website that looks like Amnesty International’s — a human rights-focused non-governmental organization — and points to a promised antivirus tool to protect against the NSO Group’s Pegasus tool,” Cisco Talos researchers said. “However, the download actually installs the little-known Sarwent malware.”

Recommendations & Requests

Books to Buy: As a Kindle reader I am often faced with “which book to buy next”. Its a bit hit and miss. As I read everything from Stephen King to Dickens, Amazon has trouble selecting books I might like. I generally avoid brand new titles (too expensive) and the ones that are hyped up. I thought other Digamites might have the same problem, so here are three that I have bought recently and found to be excellent. Perhaps other Kindle readers could suggest some more? I’ll give you three more suggestions from my back catalogue in a month’s time.
HOSTAGE by Clare Mackintosh.
This one was described as an “unputdownable, pulse pounding new thriller” and for once they were right! It concerns a woman called Mina, who is cabin crew on a direct flight to Australia, her husband, a police detective and their adopted daughter. The three all become entangled in a terrifying hostage situation. Excellent characters and a gripping story, very cleverly constructed.
THE FOUR WINDS by Kristin Hannah
We are transported to the great depression of the 30’s and the terrible disaster of the “dust bowl”. The central character is forced to move to California where the grass is greener but the situation is not, as there are thousands of homeless, unemployed souls looking for food and shelter. An amazing book, and I learned a lot about the hardships of that era.
THE LAST VOYAGE OF MRS HENRY PARKER by Joanna Neil
Mrs Parker lives aboard the cruise ship with her husband the retired ship’s doctor. After a trip ashore she returns to the ship only to find she has lost her husband. This is a funny and poignant tale of someone who is gradually losing her marbles, though they have reached the stage where they are just gently rattling in their box. If you have been on cruises you will love this.

Malaga health district stays at Covid alert Level 1, despite dropping below 50 incidence rate, while the Serranía goes to Level 0:
-The municipalities in the Serranía health district are, on Friday (1 October), about to say goodbye to the coronavirus restrictions for capacity and opening hours.
-However, despite dropping below the 50 Covid positives per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days bar required to move to Level 0, the Junta de Andalucía’s Ministry of Health has decided that the Malaga health district will remain at health alert Level 1 for at least another week, and maintain the existing restrictions.
-The other four health districts in Malaga province having higher cumulative incidence rates per 100,000 inhabitants are La Vega at 78.1, Costa del Sol (66.5), Axarquía (59) and Guadalhorce (61.4) so they will also remain at Level 1 for at least another week. SPAIN

Volcanic eruption intensifies in La Palma, increasing ash fall:
The Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, in Spain’s Canary Islands, on Thursday increased its eruptive force and was emitting a greater quantity of ash than when its lava reached the sea on Tuesday night, sources from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) confirmed. They warned that explosions are now being registered in the north slope of the main cinder cone. This new situation could cause the cone to collapse in the short term, something that is within the forecasts of the volcanologists who are working on the island. Photo:Kike Rincón. Electricity companies denounce to the European Commission the ‘decree’ of the Government aimed to reign in out-of-control power bills for consumers: To combat the rising power costs to consumers the Government has endorsed the thesis of Podemos to eliminate the so-called ‘profits fallen from the sky’, that is to say, the income of the hydroelectric and nuclear power plants because they consider that they are already sufficiently amortized and they must take advantage of the current high prices of electricity.
Nevertheless, the electricity companies, owners of these plants, categorically reject that they are amortized. In the letter, sent last Friday, they denounce that these measures “generate massive distortions, uncertainties and damage” to the Spanish electricity sector. One For The Geeks- How to Bypass Windows 11’s TPM Requirement and Upgrade from Windows 10: (I do not recommend you try this unless it is on an extra computer you want to experiment on. This is only for techies who know what they are doing. Running custom scripts in PowerShell incorrectly can render a computer un-bootable. -Ed.)
Microsoft has some strict hardware requirements that your PC must meet to install Windows 11, including TPM 2.0 support. This means that not only older computers, but virtual machines will refuse to upgrade from Windows 10, giving you a message that “this PC doesn’t currently meet Windows 11 system requirements.”
A simple script allows you to upgrade to Windows 11, even if you don’t have TPM.

COVID-19

Andalucía teeters on the edge of the Covid-19 ‘low-risk’ threshold: The region’s cumulative incidence rate stands at 51.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, falling by 3.4 in 24 hours and 13.7 in seven days.
Seville is again the province that has registered the most positives with 75, followed by Malaga with 67, Almeria (51), Huelva (43), Granada (25), Cadiz (23), Cordoba (21) and Jaén with 16.
Three deaths have been registered in Malaga province, Seville has added two and Granada one. The IECA has made an adjustment in the death count and Cadiz and Jaén have one less death than the day before. Up to 23 Andalusian health districts have reached the zero alert level for Covid: {Translation} Updated: 09/29/2021 8:11p.m.
-Three Andalusian provinces, Cadiz, Cordoba and Jaen, will have this Thursday all their health districts in Covid incidence figures at the level of “zero” alert and may benefit from the end of all restrictions on hours and capacity in stores, hotels, leisure and cultural activities from this Friday.
-The territorial committees of  Covid Alerts of Andalusia will decide this Thursday on the epidemiological situation of each of the 33 health districts of the community. In general, all those with an incidence rate of less than 50 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants at 14 days will drop from level 1 alert – in which all the districts of the community are now – to level “zero”. This is not the only parameter that will be evaluated by the health committees, which also assess the epidemiological situation with the 7-day incidence rate, the incidence in the population over 65 years of age, the percentages of traceability of infections, the hospitalization rates and the vaccination coverage of the municipalities of each district.
-At “zero” level. As of September 29, in addition to the districts of Cadiz, Cordoba and Jaen, all the health districts of Granada, with the exception of the district of Granada capital, which has an incidence rate of 54.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Sierra de Huelva-Andévalo, Serranía de Málaga and the Seville districts of Aljarafe, East, North and South meet the “zero” level records.
-The province of Almería will not be able to benefit from the return to normality, all its districts are above the indicated values and it is the province with the highest average incidence of the whole community by far, with a rate of 93.3 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants.
-As for provincial capitals, Cadiz, Cordoba and Jaen have rates at 14 and 7 days compatible with normality. Malaga is close, at 54 cases; followed by Granada (56), Huelva (60.5), Almeria (71) and Seville (75.9).
-“New normality”. The scale for assessing the risk used by the committee of experts advising the Andalusian Government on the evolution of the pandemic is less restrictive than the one agreed in autumn 2020 between the communities and the Ministry of Health to decide the levels of health alert. According to that model, the “new normal” is considered when a municipality or health district has an incidence rate below 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 14 days and less than 10 cases at 7 days, among other parameters.
-In these circumstances are this Wednesday only four of the 33 Andalusian health districts: Guadalquivir de Córdoba, which has the lowest rate per health district of Andalusia with rates of 17.8 and 4.9 cases respectively; the Sierra de Cádiz (with rates of 23.4 at 14 days and 6.9 a week), Jaén South (24.2 and 9.9) and Granada Northeast, just 6 tenths of 25 cases and two of the 10 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in 7 days.
-The entry into level “zero” does not imply that the districts in this situation will not be evaluated weekly in case of an eventual change in the evolution of the pandemic.
-Restrictions. Districts that reach level zero will have no restrictions as of Friday. Districts that remain at level 1 will maintain the current restrictions on hours and capacity for trade and hospitality, but from Thursday will have free capacity in theaters, museums, bullrings, concerts and sports competitions, maintaining the use of masks and greater interpersonal distance. MALAGA

City Planners Pushing Malaga As “World Hi-Tech Headquarters” Now Discussing Possibility of Integrating Marbella-Antequera-Nerja Into “Smart” SUPERCITY (and eventually all of Andalucia!?!): {Translation, summary}
-Malaga hosts two “a city thrilled by innovation” themed events. The opening this Wednesday at the Trade Fair and Congress Center of Malaga (Fycma) of two events, Greencities, Intelligence and Urban Sustainability -dedicated to the city of the future- and S-Moving, focused on new forms of mobility. The two forums have been held jointly for a couple of years now because of the synergies of the two concepts. As Antonio Gómez-Guillamón, president of the organizing committee of S-Moving and the Malaga-based Aertec, said, “mobility and smart cities coexist together and it is a good idea for them to share the space”.
-Despite being two events with a global vocation and with general debates, the character of the venue, Malaga, as a city that aspires to be on the crest of the wave of ‘smart cities’ and urban mobility, dominated. One example is that of Alfonso Vergara, president of the Metropolis Foundation, a prestigious international organization born at the University of Pennsylvania 23 years ago and dedicated to the creation and dissemination of innovations in the field of cities and territories.
-In his speech – which was the inaugural conference of the two events – Vergara praised Malaga’s potential to be a sustainable, ecological, innovative and livable city. “For example,” he stated, “it has an impressive morphology of the territory, with high areas and plain areas, with ecological corridors; these corridors must be the inspiring elements for the transformation of cities.”
-The president of Fundación Metrópoli referred to the concept of a supercity as one that links the main city with nearby municipalities, with many different and complementary centers, where “to have fun, learn and have contact with nature on a large scale”.
-In the case of Malaga, he cited the Marbella-Antequera-Nerja triangle -which brings together 1.5 million people in a 45-minute journey- as ideal for creating this supercity, where “we move from the classic concept of competitive advantages to another in which the advantages of complementarity prevail”. He admitted that administrative divisions make such collaboration difficult, but “we must have a vision of the future on this scale”. The head of the Metropolis Foundation advocated extending this system of supercities to the whole of Andalusia, as the basis for future development. “The interaction between cities will be the engine of global economy and infrastructures are necessary to complement the strategies of these cities,” he said.
-At the opening ceremony, María Jesús Almazor, CEO of the Cybersecurity and Cloud division of Telefónica Tech, assured that “data will be the one that saves cities; its processing will be fundamental to make smart cities, with more quality and better services”. -The decision to ease restrictions on Wednesday was backed by all the regions as well as the Health Ministry.
-Under the agreement, non-pharmaceutical measures, such as face masks, will remain in place.

David Bowie’s lost album Toy, recorded in the year 2000, is set for release: The album harks back to Bowie’s early years, reimagining and re-recording songs he wrote prior to his 1969 breakout hit, Space Oddity. These songs were dropped from his live repertoire shortly after he made it big. Toy was recorded in the year 2000, however it was shelved when Bowie left Virgin records in 2001.
The album will now see the light of day as part of David Bowie 5. Brilliant Adventure (1992 – 2001), alongside two discs of the Toy sessions’ outtakes. The box set also collects remastered editions of Black Tie White Noise, Buddha of Suburbia, Outside, Earthling, hours… Re: Call 5 and the live record BBC Radio Theatre, London, June 27th, 2000.
The set will be released on 26 November as a seven-CD or 18-LP vinyl package. Following this, the Toy album will be released in the new TOY:BOX format on 7 January 2022. US set to declare 23 species extinct, including birds, mussels and a bat: The somber list includes the ivory-billed woodpecker and the Kauai nukupu’u.
The agency is seeking comments from the public on the proposal to delist the species, which include the ivory-billed woodpecker, Bachman’s warbler, eight species of freshwater mussels, eight birds from Hawaii, a flowering plant and the Little Mariana fruit bat that once lived in Guam.
The ivory-billed woodpecker was once the country’s largest bird of its kind. The last confirmed sighting in the US was in 1944 in Louisiana. Bachman’s warbler was a small songbird with a yellow belly that was last seen in the US in 1962.
Eleven of the 23 species are from Hawaii and Guam, “many of which had striking characteristics, such as the long curved beaks of the Kauai akialoa and nukupu’u, the haunting call of the Kauai ‘o’o, and the brilliant colors of the Maui akepa and Molokai creeper,” the Fish & Wildlife Service said. One of those birds, Kauai nukupu’u, was last seen in Hawaii in 1899. Full article: https://www.cnet.com/news/us-set-to-declare-23-species-extinct-including-birds-mussels-and-a-bat/

Halting Erosion using Vetiver:
From Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Our Nursery is open by appointment depending on the current travel restrictions.

BREAKING NEWS!  Andalucía’s Covid Measures Lifted- Half of Andalucía removes all Covid restrictions a year and a half after pandemic outbreak: {Translation} Updated: 28/09/2021 21:35
-Half of Andalusia will be in phase 0 alert for Covid from this Friday. These will be the areas that are in phase 0, those with an incidence of less than 50 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants in 14 days. This has been announced by the President of the Junta, Juanma Moreno, who has appeared after the meeting of the committee of experts advising the Andalusian Government in the management of the pandemic. What does this level 0 mean? Normality. The end of restrictions. Of all those that fall within the competence of the autonomous community, not those imposed by the central government.
-According to Moreno, in the level 0 areas there will be no autonomous limitations of any kind. Neither timetables nor capacity beyond those set by municipal ordinances. It would mean returning to the situation prior to the pandemic, something that has not been seen in Andalusia for more than a year and a half, when the Covid health crisis broke out.
-The Andalusian Government points out that they have delayed by one day the meeting of the committees that determine the level of health alert in each area of the community. It was scheduled for this Wednesday but it will be held on Thursday in order to enter the new normality without restrictions in more areas of Andalusia next Friday, October 1.
-According to Moreno “there are less and less contagions and less hospitalized”, so that the situation “has changed a lot”. The improvement, he pointed out, “is notorious throughout Andalusia”.
-For Moreno this improvement in the situation is “a miracle” called “vaccines and public health”. Ninety percent of the target population will already be immunized next week, Moreno recalled.
-With this scenario, all the areas of the health districts that have a rate of less than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days will be able to eliminate all the restrictions. In addition, theaters, concerts and sporting events up to the regional level will be able to have one hundred percent capacity. And the return to full presentiality in health centers.
-However, and although the end of the measures has been decreed, it will be necessary to respect certain hygienic and sanitary obligations. Thus, the Junta speaks of frequent hand washing, personal distance and the use of masks indoors as ways of avoiding contagion.
-Andalusia has reached this situation thanks to the good evolution of the pandemic in the last weeks. The community has an incidence rate of around 50 points, where the low danger level begins. In addition, there are 378 patients in hospitals right now, 105 of them in the ICU, when there were 4,800 at the worst moments of the third wave.
-Although Moreno has welcomed the return of normality prior to the pandemic in much of Andalusia, has again urged caution. Because, he explained, there are countries where the population is not vaccinated and, therefore, may be sources of new variants of Covid. That could force to resume the restrictions that are now eliminated. “We are in a pandemic, not an epidemic,” the Andalusian president recalled. Source, Spanish: https://sevilla.abc.es/andalucia/sevi-media-andalucia-elimina-todas-restricciones-covid-y-medio-despues-estallar-pandemia-202109282037_noticia.html

BREAKING NEWS! Covid measures in Most of Andalusia Removed- Bars return to free opening hours and seating capacity: {Translation} Updated: 28/09/2021 21:36
-The bars are back to normal pre-pandemic. This has been confirmed by the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, who has appeared after the meeting of the group of experts advising the Andalusian government in the management of the health crisis. That at least in the areas of the community that enters level 0, which are a large majority of Andalusia.
-This can be seen on the covid map website (mapacovid.es) where of the 33 health destinations, all those below 50 confirmed in the last 14 days, are at level zero.
-Thus, the maximum number of diners per table and the reduced opening hours at night are over. The limit for the hotel and catering business will again be the municipal ordinances, as was the case before March 2020.
-It is necessary to preserve the use of masks inside the establishments, not only in bars and restaurants, but also in any trade, as required by the Ministry of Health.
-However, there are areas of the community that will continue for some time in phase 1, what happens to them? Well, according to the Andalusian Government, in this case nightlife will be able to open until five in the morning. In fact, this means almost absolute normality pre-pandemic. SPAIN

Spain nears its vaccination limit- Almost 90% of target population have had at least one Covid-19 shot: There is little margin for Spain to increase its Covid-19 vaccination rates. A total of 79.3% of people in the country have had at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine – the equivalent of 90% of the vaccinable population, given that no vaccine has been approved so far for the under-12s, who account for 11% of the population. If this figure is added to the so-called “anti-vaxxers” (who represent around 4% of the population, according to the latest surveys), as well as the vaccine-hesitant (i.e. people who do not reject vaccines but have no interest or intention of getting immunized), and to those that the healthcare system has difficulty reaching, such as migrants in an irregular situation, it leaves a very small group that is still unvaccinated. La Palma volcano lava flow is within 800-metres of an ‘explosive’ meeting with the sea: The ‘explosive’ contact of the lava with the sea is dangerous for the nearby population, due to the toxicity of the gas mixture given off, but also because it could vitrify, be carried into the cloud and fall onto nearby areas in the form of splinters, according to the expert in volcanology, José Luis Barrera of the College of Geologists (ICOG). DigameXtra Alert – COVID Restrictions Lifted From Friday in Much of Andalucia

COVID RESTRICTIONS IN MUCH OF ANDALUCIA TO BE LIFTED FRIDAY

Covid Andalucía Measures- Half of Andalucía removes all Covid restrictions a year and a half after pandemic outbreak: {Translation} Updated: 28/09/2021 21:35
