VI Flamenco Competition “Young Values of Flamenco”: We present the 6th edition of the flamenco competition “Jóvenes Valores del Flamenco” that will be held on July 21st in the Plaza del Olvido in Nerja at 10pm. This edition includes dance as a contest discipline, there are 6 young artists who will compete for the prize in their respective category.

Shelter closure: We at APA are devastated to announce the closure of our dog shelter in Nerja. The authority have decided that after 3 years open and rehoming over 800 dogs that the shelter is too noisy. It’s a very sad situation when other councils are doing their best to help out the refuge in their areas. We have 50 dogs there at the moment and are desperate to find homes or fosters for them until we can sort something out. Kittens need home: These 4 little guys were found at Torrox bins on Saturday morning, abandoned in a fruit crate. A vet has checked them over, said they are about one month old, and given them flea and worming treatments. They are taking bottle milk and wet food. Wanted Vet Recommendations: I am seeking recommendations for a good vet between Nerja and Torre Del mar, we are in Torrox Campo but any of these places is acceptable. We need a vet that is reliable and consistent not a practice where it is a different vet every time you visit as one of our dogs needs constant care and it is not acceptable to have someone different every time who has no idea of the problems. Needless to say we need a good vet who is caring and loves animals.

Please come and join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar on an evening excursion to visit Granada and experience the flamenco show, which takes place in the beautiful setting of the open air theatre in the Generalife gardens of the famous Alhambra Palace. The flamenco dancing is based on the songs inspired in the poems, plays and writing of Frederico Garcia Lorca who is a fountain to which every year the Festival pays homage from the utmost respect and the purest admiration. You will arrive in the centre of Granada at approx. 18.30 where there will be free time for dinner. The coach will then collect you at 21.30 to take you to the Alhambra where there is a short walk through the gardens to the theatre where the show starts at 22.00. After the show the coach will collect you for the homeward journey arriving in Torre del Mar at approx. 02.00. Ticket price 35 Euros available at the Centre. The price includes transport and entrance to the show and is a fundraising event. -Wednesday August 15th – Excursion to Almuñecar Fireworks. Please come and join friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar for the spectacular fireworks display. You will travel by coach to join in the festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua (Virgen of the Old). She will be carried in a procession from the Church of the Incarnation through the streets to the beach of San Cristobal, where many boats are waiting at sea to accompany the image to the Playa Puerta del Mar. There then follows a fantastic firework display, set to music, against a backdrop of San Miguel Castle and the Holy Rock. Ticket price 12 Euros available at the Centre. Departure times: Viñuela (Football pitch) 18.00, Torre del Mar (Bus station) 18.15, Caleta (Opposite Vets) 18.25, Algarrobo (Lidl) 18.30.

-Have you visited the Zoo at Castellar de la Frontera? If you haven’t you will be in for a treat. There are a range of big and small animals and birds (tigers, panther, lions, flamingos, ostriches, parrots, rabbits, turtles, monkeys to name a few). You are able to feed some of these the food you can buy at reception – keep the pumpkin seeds for the bird area although the monkeys like these too. This is not a slick zoo, there is some upkeep that needs doing and some of the water pools needed topping up, but the animals do look healthy and looked after. You can watch the tigers – in and out of the water (you can see them in the water through glass and above the water from a viewing area) The highlight is the bird/small mammal area that you can go into. The birds will sit on you and eat food from your hand. Be warned they don’t always want to let go. There are also rabbits, iguanas, a peacock (albino?) and tortoises among other animals that you are able to touch. Date? Friday 14th September and price? €30pp includes entry to the Zoo with Guide (€13pp) and driver’s gratuity
