What’s On

Car Boot/Market: Sunday 6th May. The regular “1st Sunday of the month” Car Boot sale/market is at El Pantano Restaurant car park, overlooking Lake Vinuela, on Sunday 6th May. 9.30am to 1.pm. Easy to find on the A356 towards Colmenar. Drive over the bridge crossing Lake Vinuela and the car park/bar is just ahead on the right hand side. Plenty of parking. There are always bargains galore……….. old and new.
– Lots of locally grown fresh fruit and veg.
– Homemade Mango + other chutney, jams and marmalades
– Plants, shrubs, flowers and herbs.
– Greetings cards.
– Always a good selection of DIY tools.
– (New) Ladies clothes.
– Large selection of paperback and hardback books
– Lots of household and garden items for sale on many of the stalls
Come along and enjoy a morning browsing and picking up a few bargains at this well established monthly market, which attracts visitors from far and near. A super location. The restaurant has shaded terraces overlooking the lake and many customers sit and enjoy a coffee or a tapa and a drink and catch up with friends and acquaintances for a chat. Many even stay and choose lunch from the varied menu available. Bar is open from 9.30am serving coffee/drinks/food.

What’s On

The Phoenix Club: Trip to Lucena & Montillar 18th May
Lucena is situated on the Lucena River, a minor tributary of the Genil, on an important crossroads at the very center of Andalusia. Lucena was taken from the Moors in 1240 by King Ferdinand III of Castile, but it remained as frontier village for centuries. In fact, it was in the attempt to recapture it that King Boabdil of Granada was taken prisoner in 1483. The parish church dates from the ending of the 15th century. Our Lady of Araceli is an image brought from Rome in the 16th century and is the patron of Lucena, canonically crowned in 1948.
Our visit includes Montillar – The olive oil of the district is abundant and good, and it is the peculiar flavour of the pale dry light wine of Montilla that gives its name to the sherry known as Amontillado. Montilla is the largest component of the MontillaMoriles designated wine region. The large wineries Alvear and Gran Barquero are located in Montilla, which has an annual vendimia (wine harvest) festival. We are visiting the Alvear Bodega which is one of the oldest in the country and includes wine tasting.(With thanks to Wikipedia).

Restaurant: We would like to highly recommend the Brooklyn restaurant on Torrox Costa. They have the best Burgers since we came to Spain five years ago. Great news that we have the Elite Team swimmers all ready for their Everest swim which is 354 lengths of Competa’s 25m pool in the fastest possible time. We now also have 20 local swimmers of all ages and abilities registered in the challenge team who are also aiming to swim the height of Everest. Oil Painting Workshops with Steve Godfrey are running again from ‘The Era Restaurante’ – Puente Don Manuel. The workshops are on Fridays each week from 10:00 until 13:30 running until July 2018. The Torrox Spanish History Group meets at 11am every first Tuesday of the month at El Parquesol restaurant in El Morche. Our next meeting in May will include a talk on the Romans. This will be the first in a series of four talks. The first part will cover the years from 236 to 213 BC and will include the war with the Carthaginians up to the relief by the Romans of Saguntum. Our second speaker for that day will give a talk on the Caliphates of Spain.
We have now had five very successful meetings with nearly 70 people attending the last talk given by the writer Joan Fallon. The Torrox Spanish History Group now has over 80 members. Not all members are here all year around with some spending half the year in their own country and the rest in Spain, so usually we have about 25 to 30 people at each meeting. We are also lucky enough to have people of all nationalities, German; Swedish; Norwegian; Danish and Dutch as well as British people. People from all nationalities are welcome. We also try to get out at least once every month for a visit to an historical site.
The idea is that the group is a DIY group, that it is that members who give talks so that we are not only students but also teachers. People are encouraged to give a talk at least once during their membership, although I understand that it can be a nerve racking experience it is also a rewarding one and people will need to study their chosen subject much deeper then they otherwise would. Further more it gives people a sense of purpose to carry out an in depth study in order to share their knowledge with other members of the group. Although it is not obligatory and people can come and enjoy our talks without thinking that they have to give a talk in order to become a member.
The group has acquired over 1000 slides that have been taken over a period of 25 years from all over Spain at different historical sites by Roberta Kettel the original founder of the Nerja branch of Nadfas (in 1993) – now called the Arts Society -. As well as the slides the group has also acquired extensive notes on various subjects as well as books about the different historical sites found in Spain. a month ago I bought a vacuum cleaner, (one of those rechargeable ones that you can use without cable) it makes cleaning almost a pleasure, but I’m here to tell you all that it went wrong on Saturday, I took it back Monday morning and the staff at Eroski were excellent, the young lady at the desk was very knowledgeable and she tested it and replaced it without hesitation, and might I say even with a smile, so there you go, next time you want electrical appliances maybe you should consider them.  Peter in Torrox. petcac @ gmail.com
