Take white goods (or anything else) to the Punto Limpio recycling depot, immediately behind the large Peugeot premises on the Velez industrial estate (next roundabout up from El Ingenio).

Drive in, and they will unload for you.

The depot is in a one-way-street, so be prepared to dodge around a little.

Best to go past Peugeot’s front, past Toyota etc, then right-right again, and the depot is on your left.

Information Request – Local Band

I’m Bill, Lancashire and stay in Nerja whenever possible with my wife Ann. We love walking in the area, visiting the villages, and enjoy getting further afield by bus from Nerja bus station.

We also enjoy taking dogs from the Tail Torrox rescue shelter for walks up the river to the pueblo two or three times a week.

During a recent 4-week visit we saw a band playing at a fiesta on the road down from Torrox Pueblo to Torrox Costa. I think the date was 11th June 2016 and I think the band was called TEJEDAS – I thought the band was great and would like to see them again on our next visit, if possible. We will be back in Nerja for 4 weeks from 10th January 2017. Do you think any of your readers may have any information about this band regarding gig dates,etc?

We are having a charity stall at the Car Boot/Market at El Pantano restaurant car park (Lake Vinuela) on Sunday 4th September, 9.30am to 1pm.. We are busy raising  funds for the 3 separate “Battle Back Golf” days being played in this area, in October. Full details will be available at the stall, regarding these 3 days of golf planned, where you will be able to participate and support our servicemen and women who have suffered serious injuries whilst serving their country. Please come along and have a chat. What’s on The Phoenix Club jolly to Zuheros, in Cordoba province on Friday 16th September.

Glaring bright light reflecting from chalk white walls in harmony with the Mediterranean blue sky is everybody image of a “pueblo blanco“. Zuheros is one of the best of these; “el pueblo mas bonito del mundo“.  It was originally settled by the Ibericos Pleno to protect an ancient roadway known as the Camino de los Metedores, the smugglers track. The Romans followed shortly afterwards, leaving behind them relics found in the Las Cuevas de los Murcielagos and elsewhere, some of which can be seen in the museum just opposite the castle.

The village became really established during the 10th century under the reign of the Muslims at which time the first castle was constructed, the last Moorish fortifications were completed in the 12th century. The territory around Zuheros was finally conquered by Fernando 3rd in 1241 and the castle was refortified in the 14th century. At this time then castle became an important element in the Christian defence of their territories against the last outpost of Muslim rule that came from Granada.

Opposite the castle is the church, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the patron saint of the village. It was constructed in the sixteenth century but highly modified in 1696 with the bell tower finally added in 1795. Ideally situated on the fringe of the Sierra Subbetica Natural Park it is now becoming a popular base for walkers and painters, the Zuhayra (Tel: 957 694693) offers extremely good accommodation and is splendidly run by the Abalos family.

The village is also famed for its cheese factory Las Balanchares, locally bred goats from the Sierras provide the milk for this internationally known product. Cheese can be bought directly from the factory.

Four kms up the hill from Zuheros are Las Cuevas de las Murcielagos caves, well worth a visit for its formations and Neolithic interest.

The old railway which passes the village has been transformed into a Via Verde which serves as a walking and cycling route. Bikes can be hired from the hotels.

Help Needed by CUDECA Shops in Torre Del Mar and Nerja

Many thanks to everyone who replied to our last advertisement for volunteers in the Cudeca shops in Nerja and Torre del Mar.

We always need more help, so if you have a few hours a week to spare we would be delighted to hear from you.

Cudeca is a charity that provides palliative care to patients suffering from cancer and other advanced and terminal diseases, at home or at their hospice in Arroyo de Miel.

We have reopened the furniture shop in Torre Del Mar and would appreciate help from strong fit people to assist with moving furniture etc. We would also love to hear from you if you would like to work in one of our other shops in Torre del Mar or Nerja.

The shop in Torre del Mar opens six mornings a week and five afternoons; (closed on Saturday afternoons and all daySunday).

Our Nerja shop is open six days a week, from 10am-1.30pm.

Please consider volunteering and help Cudeca “put life into days” for seriously ill patients.

Lost Cat

For 2 days we have  lost our cat, a black one with some bolt spots on his belly.

His name is Doerak Normally he is very near (on the roofrerraces), or in our house in Calle Eusebio Garcia 34, Competa  but since last Saturday he is lost.

At this moment he is not wearing a collar.

He is chipped, but for an other address, since we moved over  4 weeks ago.

Hereby the request to look out for him.

He is friendly, absolute not dangerous, he seems even a little shy.

Unicaja & Information on Incomes….

The bank are contacting you as the law requires that we all provide evidence of income such as a P60, pension details etc.

The email comes from an employee of Unicaja in Cómpeta.

He sits at the desk on the right as you go in.

He’s very helpful if you do need to speak to him.

Garbage Collection in Nerja – Important

Nerja Town Hall is taking out a strong campaign for garbage collection and dumping furniture in the street.

Garbage must be put in closed bags inside the containers ONLY during these hours:

Summer from 10 pm to 12 pm midnight.

Winter   from   9 pm to 12 pm midnight.

The Police will fine anyone who puts garbage out of these hours.

Also, garbage bags must not be chucked into wastepaper baskets. These are only for litter.

DUMPING OLD FURNITURE IN THE STREET WILL NOT BE PERMITTED.

You must not dump your old furniture in the street. You must take your old items with your own car or hire a van to the “Punto Limpio” which is in the industrial area of Castillo Alto, in front of “Paviser”, the big tile and bath shop.

The “Punto Limpio” is open Mondays to Fridays from 8 am to 2 pm.

The Town Hall offers a restricted service of collecting old items on certain nights and ONLY by previous appointment by phoning 952 54 8400. You will be told which night you have to leave the old items next to the containers. The Police will fine anyone dumping old furniture in the street that has not been authorized to do so.

GARDEN WASTE FROM PRUNING AND CONSTRUCTION RUBBLE.

You must not leave garden waste from pruning or construction material in the street. You must use your own car or hire a van to take it to the dump quarry in the area of Rio de la Miel. The dump quarry “La Cantera” is by the N340 road, 3 Km past Maro towards Almeria. Turn left and go up the road until your reach the quarry. It is open Mondays to Fridays from 8 am to 2 pm and 3pm to 6 pm. August 7 am to 3 pm.

The Police will fine anyone dumping garden waste or construction rubble in the street.

Wanted – someone to look after my cat for one year!

I am a Spanish local who has taken a job in the UK from September!   I have a beautiful, house-trained, affectionate cat, spayed, very well looked after, who needs a home for a year, maybe less if I can get her across to the UK earlier!  It’s just too difficult to find a house or room to rent with a cat!  Can anyone help please? Ignore the email unless you do business with Amerinoc.

In your email service you can open the email but do NOT click on any links in the email or you risk infection.

Once open click the SPAM button so repeat sends of the email will go to your SPAM folder.

(1)  In response to the request about what and where to buy.  My hairdresser, Suzi and her family and friends had all been buying the Bosch Athlet 25.2 + tools and she said it would be perfect for me as

I cannot physically use a normal vac.

I checked on Amazon.es and bought it.  Including the tools it was under 250 euros and I have to say it is probably the best thing we have bought for a very long time.

Each day you will have the choice between an easy walk of  ± 2,5 – 4 hours or a moderate walk of ± 4,5 – 6 hours. Each day you can change your choice. We will walk with guides in groups of no more than 25 persons.

I would agree the government will take into account the £140,000 if people go into care. I supply ” bespoke” care packages usually  within a 25 kilometre radius of Nerja so people no longer have to go into care and can stay in their own homes , their finances remain private.  Let’s hope they all have a jolly good spend before that time comes.

Compensation

As of April 11 2016, former members of the UK armed services diagnosed with mesothelioma on or after December 16 2015, are to receive a compensation lump sum of  £140,000. That’s great news….
But hang on a minute…. £140 grand in the bank account is very attractive to the accountants of about 90% of Local Councils. Yes sir! When the affected are taken into care, I expect the compo will go the same way as the compo given to squaddies for limbs lost in action (and other problems). It will be used to pay for their care,

Torrox Lighthouse

The light still shines but only to the sea. Neighbours complained that it was invasive so shields were put up at the sides. Ships are still safe and the light can be seen along the coast. Visit the centre below the lighthouse (if you can catch it open) – wonderful museum and gives the history of the area. There is a Roman Market there next weekend from 2nd September.

What’s on Music Fest this Sunday  

Come along and support the AAR Music Fest 2016! Included in the line-up are some great musicians, who will be performing at Scirocco in Puente Don Manuel (Viñuela area) for 12 hours of live music from 13:30h to 01:30h. This colourful event also includes side stalls, children’s entertainment, a well being zone, plus a choice of refreshments and tasty treats ranging from a BBQ stall to a vegan and vegetarian kitchen.

All performers and helpers are donating their time totally free of charge so, at €6 per entrance, we can offer great value for a great cause. 100% of funds raised goes to help rehome abandoned and abused animals. Axarquia Animal Rescue have rescued, cared for and rehomed more than 1,500 animals and can continue their work with your support.

What’s on –TAIL Charity Event 

Saturday the 27th of August, TAIL are holding an event at the Paraiso de Nerja Playa at the Torrox end of Playazo beach, Nerja (Next to the Marinas de Nerja Hotel.  The event will start at 7pm with a plethora of musicians giving up their time & energy to aid this worthy cause.  Tickets are priced at €20 adults & only €5 for childrunz!  Ticket price includes a 3 course meal comprising of an AWESOME Paella (vegetarian option also available, please specify when booking), house salad & a choice of dessert or coffee.  2 drinks are also included in the cover charge (wine or beer/soft drink only I’m afraid…though they do do luvelly cocktails!).  There will be a raffle with sPecTacULar prizes & much merriment.  Parking is available on the slip road just before the venue (N340a). There are treacherous steps down to the venue, so if you are not feeling that “Bear Grylls”, then you can park across from the hotel or beside it (the self catering section) & walk along the beach.  Fabulous venue, excellent food & atmosphere.  Thanks to all who contributed to make this event possible: All at Coast FM Gold & Malaga City FM, Digame & Nerja Book Centre for helping us promote, Jean from TAIL, Laura Hallet from Nerja Book Center, Annelein Caljouw from La Pausa, Malaga, Natalia from Dr Fish Therapy for their generous donations, DJ Swanky & all the musicians for giving up their time & valued skills…& all those I’ve missed!
