Torrox Lighthouse

The light still shines but only to the sea. Neighbours complained that it was invasive so shields were put up at the sides. Ships are still safe and the light can be seen along the coast. Visit the centre below the lighthouse (if you can catch it open) – wonderful museum and gives the history of the area. There is a Roman Market there next weekend from 2nd September.

Come along and support the AAR Music Fest 2016! Included in the line-up are some great musicians, who will be performing at Scirocco in Puente Don Manuel (Viñuela area) for 12 hours of live music from 13:30h to 01:30h. This colourful event also includes side stalls, children’s entertainment, a well being zone, plus a choice of refreshments and tasty treats ranging from a BBQ stall to a vegan and vegetarian kitchen.

All performers and helpers are donating their time totally free of charge so, at €6 per entrance, we can offer great value for a great cause. 100% of funds raised goes to help rehome abandoned and abused animals. Axarquia Animal Rescue have rescued, cared for and rehomed more than 1,500 animals and can continue their work with your support.

What’s on –TAIL Charity Event 

Saturday the 27th of August, TAIL are holding an event at the Paraiso de Nerja Playa at the Torrox end of Playazo beach, Nerja (Next to the Marinas de Nerja Hotel.  The event will start at 7pm with a plethora of musicians giving up their time & energy to aid this worthy cause.  Tickets are priced at €20 adults & only €5 for childrunz!  Ticket price includes a 3 course meal comprising of an AWESOME Paella (vegetarian option also available, please specify when booking), house salad & a choice of dessert or coffee.  2 drinks are also included in the cover charge (wine or beer/soft drink only I’m afraid…though they do do luvelly cocktails!).  There will be a raffle with sPecTacULar prizes & much merriment.  Parking is available on the slip road just before the venue (N340a). Lost Dog – is she yours ?

Coffee morning For Cudecca

Last year, on the day of the Worlds Largest Coffee  Morning, we held a sale at Sol y Sombra  cafe bar, Avenida  del Faro, Torrox Costa.   We raised nearly 700 euro for Cudeca.
This year, on a smaller scale we are holding a giant raffle,  and tickets are selling fast.

In Loving Memory of Julia Griffin
As many people know, Julia passed away on July 23rd at her home in Punta Lara.
A funeral service is being held in Leamington Spa on Friday August 26th but her friends here are arranging to gather in Nerja to remember and celebrate her life.
We plan to meet at 3pm on the 26th at the eastern end of the Torrecilla beach on the walkway from the Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos. In other words along the seafront to the left of the Bamboo Restaurant!
Julia had lived in Nerja for many years and had lots of friends so this is a chance to remember all of the good times. Please come along and pass on the details to anyone who may have known Julia

Nearly new, large bronze coloured powder coated parrot cage in excellent condition
Unfortunately my husband developed an allergy to our pet parrot who we have had to re-home and now we no longer need this cage.
The cage is less than a year old and cost 295 euros. The dimensions are 61cm wide by 56 cm deep and 156 cm high and it is mounted on castors. The gaps between the bars are 3cm wide. There is a removable tray in the bottom for easier cleaning and also a grille at the bottom which can be removed for cleaning too. It aso has metal strips to attach around the bottom to catch seeds, but we didn’t use them, so not shown on the pictures. The cage opens at the top and one of the perches can be fitted between the flaps so your pet can sit on top of the cage. The front door catch is spring loaded. It has 3 stainless steel food/water containers and an extra plastic water feeder. There is also a rope toy and a mirror and bell.

A white Landover discovery registration number SK13 MWM was involved in a hit and run.

This is a British registered car, registered in Edinburgh.

The pedestrian involved has now died.

The driver abandoned the car and ran away on foot.

Fundraising success for Cudeca

I and the other members of the rock/pop group GU!R! would like to say a huge thank you to all those who attended the Cudeca Aid fund raiser in Sayalonga on Sunday evening. The weather held out and enabled us to raise €1922! A sterling effort by the entire team at Jocavi restaurant saw 112 people being fed and watered. We are also grateful to the many local businesses who kindly donated prizes for the raffle including Catamarantours.es (Caleta), Talleres Simon (Velez), Becky and the team at The Cottage restaurant (Nerja), Bolo’s Peluqueria dog grooming (Torrox), Mick Slee (The Town Fryer – Puente), Donna Monroes hairdressers (Nerja), and the many donations by individuals who helped us raise €862 in the raffle alone. A fabulous evening enjoyed by all. Nigel.

Readers of my “tips” posts will remember I previously stressed that just because Windows 10 runs ok on your older computer today, that is no guaranty that that it will continue to do so in the future, unless it is listed in the computer manufacturer’s list of Windows 10 “supported models”.  I specifically said not to trust the Microsoft “compatibility checker”. I warned that future Windows 10 updates will install features that break some device drivers rendering them unusable. The latest major Windows 10 update has proven me correct. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update has been found to break millions of webcams for upgraders. The bug affects web cameras of all brands, built-in and external, and is even breaking Skype – Microsoft’s own audio and video chat service. The linked article has details and possible work-arounds. If this happens to you, and you can’t sort it out, email me with the exact make and model numbers of the unit. I will try to find a solution for you.

For the final event of our Summer festival Nerja Ciudad Abierta we have chosen a performance that combines music, character and beauty.  It is Sabrina Romero’s latest work, Syriana, an intimate and personal show.  Love, loneliness, failures and triumphs, are all implicated in this performance.

Sabrina Romero is a young Flamenco dancer, choreographer, singer and percussionist with a consolidated career. She has worked with companies of renowned Flamenco personalities such as Javier Latorre, Joaquín Grilo and Rocío Molina, and has performed alongside other stars such as Diego Amador, Duquende, Manolo Sanlúcar, and Carmen Linares. She has performed in prestigious festivals such as the Festival de la Guitarra del Mont de Marsan, Jazz á Vienne, and the Montreal Festival.

Sabrina Romero is a promising figure of the current Flamenco scene. In this show, singing, dancing and music meld elegantly into Ms. Romero’s vision.

It is the perfect event to close our second Summer Festival.

A friend told me of a great way to minimise the size of the plastic bottles you throw away.
Roll the empty bottle And put the top on And it will stay rolled up.

It makes a third of the size. Helpful for the environment and easier to throw away.

We are a couple (non smokers, no pets) looking for a small place to rent in the Nerja/Torrox area, campo is fine but don’t want to be isolated.. it must have decent access & safe parking for our 8m motorhome.

Rental price €250-€350 per month…minimum 6 months from Oct/Nov.

We are quiet, decent folk, both in our 60’s & been overwintering in Nerja the last few years but are bringing the motor home this year to pootle about.

What’s:on- Charity Concert in Sayalonga TONIGHT!!!!!! 

In memory of Sayalonga local Frank Lees who very sadly passed away recently from cancer, all are invited to this charity event in aid of Cudeca, the principal Cancer charity in the region.

This is a very worthy cause and your support is needed. We are lucky enough to have had this event included as part of the Semana Cultural in Sayalonga. Located in Sayalonga village square, the bar/restaurant Jocavi are putting on a charity meal from 19.30hrs in the square at €15 per head (drinks not included). Reservations to be made directly with the restaurant (their number is on the poster).

There will be a prize raffle for prizes such as meals for two at The Cottage Restaurant in Nerja, The Town Fryer in Puente, Casi Mari in Sayalonga, a free oil and filter change courtesy of Talleres Simon in Velez, a two hour cruise for two people on the Zostera catamaran from Caleta port courtesy of catamarantours.es, a K9 grooming session courtesy of Bolo’s Peluqueria in Torrox Costa and more! Now in our 4th year, classes will run again between 31st August – 16th November. Our venue is La Casa Restaurant on the main square in Torrox Pueblo. Witness for Hit & Run in Nerja

This week – Tuesday  around 13.15 we had an accident at the roundabout in Nerja at the long bridge. We were coming on our scooter from direction Torrox and took the roundabout towards Frigiliana. A small white car coming from the long bridge did not give way and rushed directly in front of us on the roundabout and made us fall. We had help of friendly people in a red Range Rover and a white commercial van. The small white car (Spanish plates, make unknown) stopped a bit further but drove of again without considering us at all.
We are looking for witnesses of the accident who might have recorded the license plate of this white car. We are left with damage to the scooter and serious bruises and amnesia. Thanks for your help: marc @ villacorteazul dot com

A DigameXtra in Granada?

To the person enquiring about a Granada version of digamextra I live in that area and, as far as I am aware, there is none.  However, as I mentioned in the digamextra review questionnaire, the suggestion is to expand the current version to include the Granada area.

Of course this is only going to happen if people contribute with adverts, what’s on, things to do etc.  Life is very different here as opposed to the costa but there are still things going on (quiz nights, markets, dogs and cats needing homes etc.) and I’m sure there are plenty of things for sale and wanted.  Digamextra is an excellent publication so, instead of a breakaway publication, why not make it bigger?

What’s on –The 3 Cultures Festival in Frigiliana

The Phoenix Club are off to celebrate the Festival of the 3 Cultures in Frigiliana which was created in 2006 by the local junta who wanted to promote the village as a quality tourist destination and created the annual event combining culture, music, cuisine and theatre in a celebration of the historic and rare co-existence of Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions. The event now attracts thousands of people to Frigiliana and gets significantly bigger year on year.

The festival is centered around the main Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the centre of Frigiliana where over 150 stalls selling food, clothes and local produce all vie for attention. A large music concert with stage and seating takes place here each night with a late fireworks display and programs are available in English and Spanish.  There is also a circus on friday night which has free entry.

Visitors will also encounter many medieval street performers and belly dancers, film screenings and craft workshops as they wander the streets from the Parque de Andalucia to the Plaza de Iglesia.  Existing and pop-up restaurants design culturally-themed menus around each religion.  There is a popular projector show at the San Antonio de Padua church celebrating the cultures with a slideshow of images against the white wall.

Dog Beach

The dog beach is at the end of Torre del Mar after the camping site and towards the naturists’ camping site.
Apparently you get to it using the road that runs along where the Feria is held.  There is a notice that says it is open from 9am to 10pm.

CUDECA looking for volunteers to work in the shops at Torre del Mar and Nerja.  We have re/opened the furniture shop at Torre del Mar and could do with help shifting and moving furniture etc.

We would also like additional staff for the clothes shops. During the Summer months many of our regular staff are away or have family visiting and we have a shortage of staff as a result.

The Nerja shop opens six days a week from 10am until 13.30.

I highly recommend La Tasca restaurant opposite the police station in Torre del Mar

Lovely food (Josh the cook is brilliant) Mark and Sheila are super friendly, service is great. They always make you feel very welcome.

Whether you fancy a quick coffee, a nice cold beer or a full English breakfast with a nice fresh orange juice, you will definitely enjoy it.

My personal favourites are Fish and Chip Fridays, and Cajun chicken!

This is not a service for local companies to exploit.

About Photos and other attachments

If you want to send a picture please send it as an attachment to your email, in JPG or JPEG format and try and keep the size down to around 200KB.

Please don’t send PDFs or Word documents.

Your email address must be quoted in this forrmat…I insert spaces within the address so that nasty software can’t steal their address for spam purposes – e,g, my address is correctly   janekirkspain@gmail,com

if it were a Contributor’s address I’d insert spaces thus –

janekirkspain @ gmail,com.

So all you do is remove those spaces before contacting a contributor.

For Sale –Starclima Air Conditioner

30 Euros as is. Complete with installation instructions and all the bits (except a remote control) this unit was only removed to make room for a sauna installation. It works, but will need someone who knows how to install (written instructions come with) and it will need to be re-gassed. Information for ordering a replacement remote control reasonably priced online is also included. We had 2 of these units and had to replace the remotes a couple years ago.
