Please help to Identify Intruders in Algarrobo

Recently there have been several serious break-ins reported in Algarrobo

Campo area.

The intruders where very brutal and they even pulled out the metal bars

(rejas) fromthe wall.

The damage to the buildings has been accordingly.

In one case, the high quality cameras of ¡PERFECT Alarm!  We were able to take pictures and video of 3 criminals. Unfortunately they were wearing face masks.  Nevertheless, we would like to ask the readers  to check the attached link, to see if they can recognise any of the 3 persons.

We have uploaded a video on our homepage, so you can analyse the approach of the suspects. There might be a little detail, which you recognise and can help to find these intruders.

Please take your time and let us know if you recognised any person by the way he moves or by the clothes he is wearing.

Volunteers Needed for Torrox Shop of CUDECA

Many thanks to all the people who responded to the advertisement for volunteers

to work in the Cudeca shops in Torre del Mar and Nerja.  Strangely enough all of the

applicants were for the shop in Torre del Mar!!

This is a call to possible volunteers for Nerja.  If you could spare four hours one morning

a week Monday to Saturday we would be delighted to hear from you.  The shop is open

from 10am until 1.30pm and it helps to support the hospice in Benalmadena and several

home care teams, who attend terminally ill patients in their own homes.

It’s probably easier and cheaper to make these sausages! You can find the recipe easily on the Internet. The ingredients, including the sausage casings

can be bought from Martin of Ye Old Butchery who advertises regularly on Digamextra. All you need is a mincer with a sausage nozzle attachment.

They have been Kenwood mixer accessories since the 1960’s and there are many sitting in the backs of kitchen cupboards so ask your friends if you don’t want to buy one, but a simple mincer is not expensive – you can buy a hand operated one for €24. It’s great fun making sausages and you know exactly what’s in them. It will really impress your friends too!

Endesa email scam – urgent

I have received two emails today pretending to be from Endesa (Factura electronica de Endesa) and including my name in the subject.

The email says there is a new invoice available and invites you to click on a link to access it.

These are scam emails so do not click on the link.

Fortunately I had previously received an email from Endesa advising that these fraudulent emails are in circulation and that clicking on the link will download a virus.

If you preview the email you will see that it has not come from Endesa.

Abandoned Cat

My elderly neighbours in Torrox Pueblo owned this cat who is a 6 year old neutered female. Sadly, the old man died, his wife was too old and frail to

stay in the village house and unfortunately their cat was abandoned.

She went missing for a while and then reappeared and decided to seek refuge

in my house.

She was in a sorry state, thin, bedraggled and with a nasty wound to her tail. Fortunately the vet found that it was infected but not broken.

She is on a course of antibiotics.
I cannot keep her. My cat hates her, always has, chasing her off whenever she ventured too close.

I’m having to keep her in isolation. She is quite sweet and affectionate and is housetrained. She cannot be put back on the street as she clearly cannot cope.

I would be willing to arrange for her to be chipped and for this year’s injections

if someone could take her in.

Where & How to get answers to Archez Development Plans

I am a local resident that was made aware of the road closure and merely wished to inform locals prior to the commencement of the works.
The issue regarding possible future erection of barriers is a matter for Archez town hall.The subscriber is obviously concerned  therefore I would suggest that enquirers be made at Archez town hall. Councillor Phil is the foreigners representative at the town hall,he would be able to answer this query if contacted.

High up on the Mediterranean side of the Sierra Nevada, south of Granada, these villages were sufficiently remote to offer a safe home for the Moors some time after the Catholic Kings had re-conquered the rest of Spain. The Moorish influence is obvious in the architecture of the villages. Because the villages are so high in the mountains this there will still be snow on the higher mountains. Mulhacén, the highest mountain in mainland Spain can be seen.

The terracing and the irrigation of the hillsides (the “Alta Alpujarra”) was the work of Berbers, who inhabited this area after the Moorish invasion of 711 AD. They also created villages on the hillsides in the style to which they were accustomed in the mountains of North Africa: narrow, winding streets and small flat-roofed houses.

Trevelez is famous for it Iberivco hams and cherries and we will also be visiting the quaint village of Pampaneira which has the smallest chocolate factory which you can visit.

Announcement from Archez Townhall

The Townhall of Archez would like to inform everyone that the road ‘Campoamor’ that runs between Archez and Canillas de Albaida (behind the old town hall, inbetween the traffic lights), will be closed for resurfacing and the improvement of utility services (water, electricity etc).  The works will start on Wed 8th June and will run for approximately one month.  We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but this is essential work towards the improvement of local infrastructure.

Tribute to John Cook

It is with great sorrow that we have to break the news of the death of John Cook, aged 75, last night. (Monday)

He loved Spain and was deeply loved by every one in Maro, his latest residence.

In the late nineteen-eighties he took early retirement, having been deputy headmaster at  a secondary school

in the Birmingham area for nearly thirty years. Being a live wire,he helped all students in Frigiliana Enrique Ginés school and Nerja´s I.E.S. Sierra Almijara to speak better English.

He was a mathematician, a soccer referee, a man of many passions and interests.

He loved the quiet Spanish way of life, adored our cuisine and especially fell for this beauty spot called Maro, having previously lived in La Noria and other areas. Wherever he went he made new friends among the locals and helped every one generously.

We always remember his sense of humour and grieve his loss, our loss…

Thank you Kevin for letting us know about the road closure in Archez.  Are you by any chance aware of any plans to install road barriers on the upper part of this road and onto Canillas? Since the previous trees were cut down for the new farming the road seems quite dangerous at times.

Recommendation –Pet & Home Sitters

At short notice we had to go to Holland for a funeral and were desperate for petsitters. We found Sarah and Tony on Digame. We were quite worried as all our normal petsitters could not come and we were not eager to try out new people. They had to stay at our place as we have 5 dogs, 4 cats, 2 ponies and 8 chickens. However, we were very content, arrived home to very happy animals and a clean house. Highly recommended.

New Home Needed for Husky Cross  

Husky cross beauty needs an active home – aged 2 years old and only 15 kg as she’s crossed with a smaller breed. Comes with passport, just had new vaccines and rabies, is chipped and neutered. She has also just been groomed for the summer heat but has amazing long hair for when its cooler. Comes with large dog crate – she loves her indoor kennel as it’s her space, blankets, bowls, lead, collar, harness, toys and some food

Due to a chronic health condition diagnosis , she is getting very bored with short walks due to my health and would really enjoy running or a house with land. She’s extremely bright and could easily do agility or training awards or even hunting. She’s very good travelling long distances in the car and loves walks.

Would prefer her with older children as she can be bouncy, and medium / large dogs as small ones seem to scare her as do house cats.

She is the kind of dog that people stop us to ask us where we had her and what breed  as she’s that gorgeous. If you think you could offer this girl a home  then please email me or call on 0034 684 226996 so we can arrange a meeting and a home check.

The Town Hall of Archez would like to inform foreign residents that the Junta de Andalucia is offering a free ‘Spanish for Foreign Residents’ course running from Sept 2016 to June 2017.  There are 25 places available and the course will be based in either Archez, Canillas de Albaida or Competa – dependent on where the most students reside.

To sign up, simply go into either Archez, Canillas or Competa Town hall with a photocopy of your NIE or passport.

Registration is open until15th June.

Students must be over 18 years old.

Abandoned Cats 

Female tortoiseshell approximately 6yrs and male kitten 5 months have been left to fend for themselves by uncaring neighbours. I am feeding them but cannot offer them a permanent home. They are used to living indoors and need lots of loving. Would anyone help them please.

Tiendanimal – new store !

I just wanted to let everyone know that the fabulous Spanish pet store Tiendanimal has just opened a new location at El Ingenio next to Worton.
If you have not heard of Tiendanimal but have pets, you owe yourself a favor to check out their huge selection either at their store or online at tiendanimal.es where they have a larger selection. The website also has English translation. You can order online and pick up from the store for no charge. My husband and I have been shopping with Tiendanimal since they opened their shop in Malaga across from Bauhaus, we are thrilled to have a closer location.
The gentlemen who opened the stores and online shop are true animal lovers and all of their employees are pet owners. They have animals for adoption in their shops, but these are abandoned animals looking for homes, not from a puppy mill or cattery and they have large areas to play and run!
We are very happy with the selection that they offer, especially in dog and cat food that are all natural and contain no cereals and are 80% or more meat or dried meat. Our animals love them.
They also have everything for birds, reptiles, small mammals, fish tanks and everything else under the sun!

Plus is there any info about the breakwaters on Torrox beach? One has been constructed near the lighthouse, where is the other going to be? There are huge piles of sand on beach in front of Iberia hotel, thought maybe this is something to do with it.

Services Needed – Speaking Spanish – Spanish Conversation

When we first moved to Spain many years ago we had ‘proper’ private Spanish lessons, learning to conjugate verbs with weekly homework etc. I used to be fairly reasonable at speaking the language but in recent years, having moved to an area where we rarely see anyone to speak to, I have lost my confidence and seem unable to put together a coherent sentence in Spanish these days. I have also noticed that Spanish people serving in local shops and the Post Office now also break into English when I am trying to practice my Spanish, which doesn’t help!

I don’t want to start again with beginner’s lessons as I am not too bad at the theory and can read Spanish fairly well. I really need to be able to speak and practice the language more and to rebuild my confidence again. Can anyone offer any suggestions or help please? (I am in the Torrox area.)

Recommendation Needed – Framing & Restoration

I have just had another large oil painting framed by Manolo at Brea on Calle Carabeo in Nerja, just across from Restaurante 34. We have previously had several other paintings framed by him. The frames are custom made to the width and color stain or paint that you want, to compliment the painting. I have always felt completely comfortable leaving work with him, even some older, delicate paintings from my family.
I highly suggest them for replacing any old frames or framing new art.
Manolo also does beautiful furniture restoration, which you can see in their shop. Vicky has beautiful furniture, mirrors, art and decorative pieces for the home.
Vicky speaks perfect English as well as Spanish.

Recommendations Needed – Tax Advisor

As we all should know, the deadline for filing our tax returns is only a few weeks off. I’ve previously used a gestor some distance away, but would like to use one more accessible to Cómpeta, Torrox or Velez.
My tax affairs are very simple as I own no property and have only two small pensions, so the gestor’s fees should be proportionately low.

Recommendation Computer/Laptop Repairs – Doctor Laptop

Once again I am grateful to Naythan in Nerja  for resurrecting another laptop for me. He is thorough, expert and very fast to identify and repair problematic computers. Not only do I now have a clean re installation of Windows 7, I can use my laptop with the confidence that it will not now attempt to upgrade to Windows 10, with which it is not compatible.

He also removed bloat software and ensured I had only useful programs on the laptop, and cleaned it inside of accumulated fluff from having dumped it behind my sofa when it became unusable.

Support Battle Back on Ascot Ladies Day Fund Raising Event Thursday 16th Jume at 2:00pm

Battle Back is a registered Associated Charity with Help For Heroes specifically to assist in raising money for the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.

Here in Spain we raise money to bring injured servicemen out to Spain to play Golf as part of their rehabilitation.

This is our second year of fund raising for this cause, when we brought out 8 and this year raising funds to bring out 12.

We are holding an Ladies Day Ascot Event at Atila’s in Puente Don Manuel.

It is an afternoon of fun. Sipping Cava “ Speak Easy Style”, munching on Sandwiches, cakes and other delights.

Handsome Dog Needs a Home  

We found this beautiful dog wandering on the road to Zafarraya last week, filthy and starving. Some local farmers say he had been around there for around two weeks. The vet says he is about 7 months old and has no microchip. We have wormed and Frontlined him and cleaned him up, under that beautiful, soft coat he is very skinny but we are feeding him up. He is delightfully playful and gentle, very loving and fine with our other dogs.

New Home for Negro Possible

The blog post of June 3rd had a photo of another dog looking for a good home – a chocolate podenco that was abandoned.

To correct the story – Negro is a skinny, very sweet-natured male dog who’s chained most of the time. He belongs to a neighbor who just gave us permission to find him a good home.

Negro is under 2 years old and doesn’t appear sick, but we would have him tested and help with initial vaccinations, etc., if someone comes forward to adopt him.

On Friday 10^th of June, Special coffee morning for Akshy Charity.  Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar will hold a special coffee morning; all are welcome, so please come and join friends.  All the proceeds will be donated to the Indian charity “Akshy”.  This is a non-profit making Non Government Organization whose principal aim is to improve the living conditions and education of the poorest children the “untouchables” (or dalits).  The Kamal Children´s Centre located in the village of Jaitiya is where the charitable work takes place and the children study pre-nursery education. Your donation this year will enable the Centre to buy more school uniforms.  Lux Mundi look forward to seeing you enjoying your cakes and drinks, possibly in the beautiful garden and you will be able to purchase new and nearly new ladies and men’s clothing, shoes and accessories in the boutique, bric-a-brac and second hand books.  We thank you in anticipation for your support.

Thursday 16^th June – Coach excursion to Gibraltar.  Why not join Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar and visit Gibraltar, a chance to take a cable car to the top of the Rock, see the unique Barbary Apes.  Visit the upper Rock nature reserve, where you will find the Historic tunnels dating from 1779-1783 and St. Michael´s Cave.  Both of these have guided tours.  In the town can be seen the Gibraltar Museum, Government House and in the Southern area are key historical sites. Account of Epic Walk for Charity

I would like to add my two centimos worth to the CUDECA fundraising activities mentioned recently.

I have just returned home from my fourth walk along the Camino de Santiago, this time on the Camino del Norte, along the north coast of Spain from the French border at Irun to Ferrol in the west and then along the Camino Ingles to Santiago de Compostela.  I recorded 971 kms walked along the route from accommodation to accommodation, but I also covered many more kilometres walking around the various destinations after my arrival each day.  Much of my walk hugged the coastline, occasionally trailing across beautiful deserted beaches, sometimes necessitating a ferry ride across an estuary, often high above the pounding waves on the edge of towering cliffs.  There were magnificent views in all directions, with coast to the right and snow-topped mountain ranges to the left, but there was also a great deal of road walking on this camino, which was quite hard-going.  And a great deal of elevation most days, particularly for the first week.

Between the two caminos Norte and Ingles, I sort of did my own thing and for several days followed really remote tracks and saw not another soul walking for five of the seven days I was ‘off piste’.  I made it to the northern most tip of Spain at Estaca de Bares (seen in the accompanying photo) and pushed myself so far outside my comfort zone that I have almost forgotten where it used to be.  I honestly didn’t know I had it in me to do something like this – it is amazing what we can do if we push ourselves a little.

I met some lovely people along the way of all ages, from all corners of the world and was delighted to meet up with some of them when I arrived in Santiago.

During the five weeks that I was away, my partner David has been raising sponsorship funds in support of CUDECA and Save the Children (all funds raised will be donated to the charities mentioned, I have funded my walk entirely myself).  Our friends and neighbours are very generous and there have been many pulls on their heart-strings recently with the various charity fundraising events.  I think David is a little disappointed that this year he hasn’t been able to raise as much sponsorship donations as in previous years, but he has done a sterling job and we currently have around 800 euros to share fairly evenly between our chosen charities.  There may be more to come when I put an appeal in my blog.

Martin (swimming) Debi (cycling) and I (walking) have all challenged ourselves and are all striving to raise money for a very worthy local charity.  My job is done and I would like to wish Martin and Debi great success and the amazing feeling of achievement that really pushing yourself can provide.

I have also received fantastic moral support via my blog from friends here and in the UK and from followers from all around the world that I have never met but who have taken the time to give encouragement and engage with me all along the route.  I posted to my blog each day with many photographs of the areas I walked through, showcasing the wild flowers and beautiful, mostly well-cared for, animals I passed.  Please take a look if you are interested, many have enjoyed reading about my adventure – during the five weeks I was away I received 55,000 views. Paintwork Advice Needed Please

Attention any kindly Decorating-Digamites!

Some weird grey chalky rings ( 2-3ins in diameter) have started to appear ( again) on the paintwork in our bedroom. They have congregated  mainly on the ceiling above the bed head and on the wall at the same end.Oddly enough last year we were able to actually wipe them off ( we also painted over a few to see if that was more effective).Now they are back again. Is there anything we can do? We feel they are caused, in some way, by the atmosphere in the room rather than damp within the wall, hence being able to wipe them off.

Any help would be appreciated ( please do not recommend that me and the Missus stop breathing!)

Volunteers wanted in the Cudeca Shops

Do you have four hours, once a week to volunteer in either of the Cudeca Shops in Nerja or Torre del Mar?

The  Nerja shop opens six days from 10am until 1.30pm.

The shop at Torre del Mar also opens in the afternoons from 17.30 until 19.30 Monday till Friday.

During the Winter we have plenty of volunteers but come the Summer many of our helpers have family out on holiday or go

away themselves.

If you can only commit to a month that would be a big help. The income from the Cudeca shops  support the Hospice at Benalmadena and the Hospice home care teams who attend people in their own homes. Please help put life into days for seriously ill

patients.

Recommendation –Where to buy a TV

(1)  The best place to buy televisions in my experience is Carrefour, there is one at Centro Commercial Total, near Rincon de La Victoria.

They have a good selection of models and the prices are usually lower than elsewhere.  There is a website where you can check all the prices.

We saved over 100 euros on our Samsung Smart TV

(2) I wouldn’t bother having a TV sent over from the UK. If it goes wrong then it would be difficult to send it back (as our German neighbours and found with their new German-bought TV that went wrong almost immediately they came here). They are not that expensive here and we have not had any problems buying or returning electrical goods from either Worten or Carrefour.                  Barbara

La Hacienda moves in mysterious ways

I have always believed in glasnost regarding my tax affairs so when my little tax haven came to an end this year I was a little surprised, not in the amount of taxation, but in the manner in which it was taxed.  My small U.K. armed forces pension is too low to attract HMRCs attention other than to drop my U.K. tax allowance.

It would appear that the latest tax regime in Spain requires me to have very personalised tax rates. To demonstrate, if you are to combine the Junta and State rates then my personal rates are 3.3% higher than those quoted on the Junta de Andalucía and Agencia Tributaria websites; i.e. my base tax rate starts at 24.8% rather than 21.5%.  This assumes that all of the affected bands are adjusted by the same amount and the new bands apply equally to my age allowance.

I cannot find out is how these adjustments are calculated, my Gestor is reduced to on-line form filling so was unable to help. The ‘manual práctico renta 2015’ will probably have the information in it somewhere but a 1160 page  manual in a foreign language does not make easy bedtime reading unless you are an insomniac.

Is there anyone in Digameland able to direct me to either a website that can explain or the relevant page in the manual?

Photographs hold treasured memories which are precious and often irreplaceable.  However, the passage of time can leave photos faded and even damaged.  My photo restoration service can breathe new life into your old photos.

I can refresh the colours and repair damage.  The process involves a scan in the original photo, then the restoration / repair is turned on the copy. The repaid copy can then be printed or provided on a memory stick to take to a printer.

Restoration and print stroke memory stick €40.00 per photo.  A €10.00 discount is applied per photo for two or more restorations.  (maximum five photos per job).

Please note if the damage is too great the restoration may be limited or not possible.  An assessment will be done before any work is started. Most single restorations can be done with in the €40.00 budget, however if there is a lot of damage they may be an additional cost.
