Concert- CC Syndicate: Fri, 22 May
Ventana Abierta Jazz Club, Nerja
Carlos Ligero (Saxo) – Pierre Huarniz (Guitarra) – Tommy Moore (bajo) – Cote Calmet (Batería)
At the intersection of 70s groove and 21st-century avant-garde emerges CC SYNDICATE, an international group redefining the boundaries of jazz-rock.
Their sound is a contrast: it features melodies inspired by The Beatles, the volcanic force of Jimi Hendrix, and the exploratory freedom of Miles Davis’s electric period.
Their compositions breathe rhythms reminiscent of James Brown and Tower of Power, articulated with the modern elegance of figures like John Scofield and Joshua Redman.

Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

SPAIN
The government’s latest green tax hike- you’ll have to pay at least 10 cents deposit for each container, and stores will pass on management expenses of the new service to consumers: {Trans, summary}
– Spain will introduce a compulsory container return system, SDDR, in November 2026 after failing earlier recycling targets. Consumers will pay at least €0.10 per drink container, including plastic bottles up to three litres, cans and drink cartons. This amount will be refunded only if the container is returned in perfect condition at designated points in shops or supermarkets.
– The system aims to increase recycling but will create logistical and financial pressure on retailers, who must install return points and manage large volumes of containers across 500,000 sales locations and more than 8,000 municipalities. Supermarkets are expected to face the greatest burden, while bars and restaurants may be exempt if products are opened, consumed and returned on site. Consumers will face higher upfront costs and must actively return containers to recover their deposits.
– The launch of the system is running late, and the government has not granted permission to any organisation to manage or operate it.
– {If this goes into effect, it will raise the price of every 6-pack by more than 60¢ overnight, 10¢ per can/bottle, plus handling expenses. In addition, deposit systems also create new social problems, especially with scavengers invading urban and affluent areas collecting containers. In extreme cases, groups organise routes and schedules to sweep affluent areas– trespassing, bin-raiding, making noise at night, and the resulting confrontations. This is not speculation, it is a well-observed pattern in the US, Canada, Australia and parts of Europe. -Ed. Another Socialist Scandal! Former Socialist PM Zapatero, under investigation in the “Plus Ultra case”: {Trans, summary}
– The National Court has summoned former prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (2004-2011) as an investigated party in the Plus Ultra case, in which he is accused of influence peddling, belonging to a criminal organisation and document falsification. Police searched his institutional office in Madrid and several related companies, including Analisis Relevante SL, owned by businessman Julito Martinez, a friend of Zapatero. The company received large consultancy payments from Plus Ultra and allegedly paid €661,000 to Zapatero and his daughters, while the airline had received a €53 million public rescue.
– Police also searched the offices of his daughters’ agency and the company Inteligencia Prospectiva, linked to alleged commissions for access to government contracts. The investigation centres on whether Plus Ultra executives used rescue funds to repay loans tied to an international Venezuelan money laundering network involving assets from gold sales, PDVSA and the CLAP programme. Two additional individuals are also under investigation. Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/espana/expresidente-zapatero…

BREAKING NEWS- The judge identifies Zapatero as the leader of “an organized network of illicit influence peddling”: {Trans, summary}
– National Court Judge José Luis Calama considers former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero the alleged leader of “a stable and hierarchical influence-peddling structure” whose objective was “obtaining economic benefits through intermediation and the exercise of influence before public bodies in favor of third parties, mainly Plus Ultra.”
– In the order in which the magistrate agrees to summon him as a witness on June 2, Calama explains that the alleged scheme used shell companies, simulated documentation and opaque financial channels “to exert illicit influence, hide the origin and destination of the funds and obtain economic benefits for third parties and the scheme itself.”
– Throughout 85 pages, the instructor points out that the investigation – which he assumed last March after a Madrid court recused itself – has made it possible to confirm the existence of “an organized scheme of illicit influence peddling, structurally organized and led by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who would have put his personal contacts and his ability to access high-ranking officials of the Administration at the service of third parties interested in obtaining favorable decisions.” Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/espana/juez-situa-zapatero-como-lider-trama-organizada-ejercicio-ilicito-influencias_202605196a0c460ab5b066299615b066.html

Spain Approves New Tax Reductions for Agriculture Under 2025 Modules System: {Trans, summary}
– The Official State Gazette has published a Finance Ministry order reducing net yield indices for the 2025 modules regime of IRPF, Spain’s Personal Income Tax, applied to farmers and livestock breeders. The measure follows recommendations from the Agriculture Ministry, which cited extreme weather and other adverse conditions that harmed farm profitability.
– Key reductions include a 50 percent cut for beekeeping and a 3 percent reduction for sheep and goat meat and milk production, along with regional reductions for cereals, olive groves and vineyards. These adjustments add to a general 5 percent reduction already applied to about 800,000 producers, which could lower the IRPF taxable base by around €825 million. Other deductions remain in force, including a single 0.5 index for livestock mainly fed with purchased feed and a 25 percent reduction for electric irrigation. Payments under eco schemes of the Common Agricultural Policy remain exempt from IRPF. ANDALUCÍA
Moreno claims power without a sufficient investiture majority, then advocates for a PP government “alone” and warns Vox, “their pursuit of power would not be reasonable.” (…but Moreno’s pursuit of power after failing to win enough votes to govern alone is reasonable?): {Trans, summary}
– The PP-A candidate for re-election as president of the Junta, Juanma Moreno {pic}, has opted this Monday for an Andalusian government “on its own” and has considered that it would not be “reasonable or sensible” for Vox to seek the “seat” in the future regional executive.
– This is what Juanma Moreno said upon his arrival at the meeting of the National Board of Directors of the PP, in Madrid, convened to analyze the result of the Andalusian elections this Sunday, in which the PP-A has obtained 53 seats, falling two short of an absolute majority.
– “The result is very good and gives us room to maneuver to govern alone,” said Juanma Moreno, for whom “the imposition or the permanent search for a seat” by Vox would make no sense. {What? The PP specifically do NOT have ‘room to govern alone’, they failed to gain a sufficient majority to do so. These people live in total denial of reality, and make announcements that insult our intelligence! Moreno is in exactly the same dilemma as Sanchez, he cannot do anything unless an investiture partner agrees. Both of them behave as if they were royalty speaking to ignorant peasants. -Ed.}

NERJA
– Environmental group reports sewage leak on Maro beach– GENA alleges Nerja Villa de Mar campsite (Maro) is main source of the discharge: {Summary}
– The Axarquía Nature Research Group (GENA-Ecologistas en Acción) has filed a complaint with Nerja town hall and the regional coastal authority (Costas) regarding the ongoing discharge of untreated sewage in the vicinity of Maro beach.
– According to a statement issued by the environmental group, the complaint was filed following reports from beach users regarding foul odours in the vicinity of the area’s well-known Cascada Grande waterfall, situated at the western end of the beach. Following an on-site inspection, members of the association reportedly confirmed the presence of sewage flowing through the Barranco del Arco ravine until it empties into the sea.
– GENA has pointed to the Nerja Villa de Mar campsite in Maro alleging it’s the main source of the discharge, whose waste water, according to the association, is stored in tanks that are damaged and leaking. “Malodorous pools originating from these tanks can be seen in the surrounding area,” the group states, claiming that the drainage system is not functioning correctly. – She also expressed her full support, solidarity, and affection to the young women affected, as well as to their families and friends. “No one should suffer violence, insults, or discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. A drug raid in Vélez-Málaga ends in gunfire with several fugitives on the run: {Trans, summary}
– The National Police carried out a major anti drug operation in the Axarquia region after suspected traffickers opened fire on officers in Velez Malaga. Police were attempting to arrest a suspect at a warehouse allegedly used to store fuel, boats and equipment linked to drug trafficking when two vehicles arrived and the occupants began shooting to prevent the arrests. Officers were unharmed and detained a 51 year old man, later arresting a woman accused of collaborating with the criminal group. The attackers fled in vehicles that collided before escaping onto the A 7, endangering officers and other drivers and causing a motorcyclist to fall without injury. Several suspects and vehicles remain missing, and a large search operation continues. Inside the warehouse, police found narco boats, fuel containers and a van carrying petrol tanks of about 5,000 litres. The investigation remains open and further arrests are expected. WHO alert- More than 500 suspected Ebola cases and 130 deaths in Congo: {Trans, summary}
– The WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus {pic} reported that the Ebola outbreak in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 500 suspected cases and 130 deaths, with confirmed spread to Uganda, including two cases in Kampala and one evacuated United States citizen. Thirty cases are confirmed in Ituri, where conflict, insecurity and high population movement are worsening transmission.
– Tedros warned that the situation is escalating quickly, with deaths among health workers and cases appearing in major urban centres, raising the risk of accelerated spread. Uganda has suspended Martyrs Day celebrations to prevent mass contagion. Tedros declared an international emergency ahead of the emergency committee meeting and released an additional 3.4 million dollars, bringing the total response funding to 3.9 million dollars, around 3.4 million euros. The Bundibugyo strain has no vaccines or specific treatments, and more than 100,000 displaced people are increasing vulnerability across the region. Tennis News- Alcaraz will not play in Wimbledon or Roland Garros: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz announced on Tuesday that he will not participate in Wimbledon, nor in the grass court season, this season due to the wrist injury he suffered at the Conde de Godó tournament last April, which has also prevented him from competing in the upcoming Roland Garros.
– The player from Murcia has thus postponed his return to the courts, which he hasn’t played since the Barcelona Open (Conde de Godó), when he suffered a right wrist injury in his second-round match against Otto Virtanen. Since then, he has missed the tournaments in Madrid and Rome, and will also be absent from Roland Garros, where he was the defending champion.
– In terms of rankings, his absence from these two tournaments will mean that the player from El Palmar will lose up to 1700 ATP ranking points, in addition to the 2000 he lost at Roland Garros. Despite the bad news, Alcaraz himself stated that his recovery is “progressing well” and that he feels “much better,” so his return to the circuit could come at the beginning of August at the Montreal Masters 1000.
