SPAIN

European auditors warn Spain is failing to meet transparency standards with the recovery funds and is allocating 75% to public entities: {Trans, summary}
– Spain is not fully complying with the post-pandemic recovery fund, whose deadline for implementing reforms ends in August of this year, despite calls from Pedro Sánchez’s government to extend this timeframe in light of the current energy crisis. A report by the European Court of Auditors (ECA) published this Wednesday reveals that, for example, Spain publishes allocated funds rather than disbursed funds, violating European Union transparency regulations. Furthermore, the report indicates that 75% of the aid is allocated to public entities.
– Spain was one of the ten Member States selected by the Court for audit visits and videoconferences to analyze its management systems, and there are worrying findings: the Government, for example, does not systematically collect the actual costs of the measures, but only gathers data from the final recipients and contractors. These actual costs are reflected in other countries studied.
– “Citizens have less confidence in public finances if money is not spent with complete transparency,” explained Ivana Maletic, the Court Member responsible for the audit. “ We do not have a complete picture of how funds are being used. Citizens have the right to know how public funds are being used, who receives them, and how much is actually being spent. These transparency gaps in the MRR should not extend to future EU budgets.” Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/lainformacion/economia-y-finanzas/los-auditores…

ENERGY CRISIS

The European Parliament is asking the Spanish government not to close the Almaraz nuclear power plant and to extend its lifespan until at least 2040: {Trans, summary}
– The European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions (PETI) on Wednesday called on the Spanish government to reverse its decision to close the Almaraz nuclear power plant and demanded that its operational life be extended until at least 2040. The report also states that decisions regarding strategic infrastructure must be based “on technical criteria, energy security, decarbonization, and socioeconomic impact.”
– The report “demands transparency and a real impact assessment from the Spanish government ,” as explained by the European People’s Party, which, along with far-right parties, endorsed the conclusions to secure the document’s approval. “Energy cannot be decided based on ideology,” they added.
– MEPs also call on the European Commission to assess whether plans to close nuclear power plants in Spain “are consistent with the principles of good governance, transparency and evidence-based legislation, particularly in light of the absence of a publicly available technical, economic or social justification.” Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/parlamento-europeo…

GASTRONOMIA

Tips for desalting cod: {Trans, summary}
– To achieve a first-class dish, the secret lies not only in the cooking, but also in impeccable preparation beforehand which respects the timing and temperature of the fish. Mastering the art of desalting will allow you to restore the juicy texture and correct level of saltiness, transforming a salted piece into the star ingredient of your kitchen. Here are some tips for this process.
– Initial cleaning: before soaking it, wash the pieces under cold running water to remove the outer layer of coarse salt.
– Strategic cutting: cut the fillets into pieces if they are very large, reserve the thicker parts for long cooking or serving with sauces, and the thinner parts or trimmings for dishes such as pil-pil, scrambled dishes (revueltos) or salads.
– Positioning the pieces: always place the cod skin-side upwards in the container, as this is where the salt is most concentrated, and this position helps it come away more easily.
– Water proportion: make sure the fish remains fully covered with plenty of water throughout the entire process.
– Timing according to thickness: depending on the size, it will need more or less soaking time with more or fewer water changes. For example, thick fillets require three days with water changes every 6 hours; thinner parts need 36 hours with changes every 8 hours; and flakes require only two hours soaking or ten minutes under running water.
– Constant temperature: always carry out the desalting process inside the fridge, between 6 and 8 °C, to prevent the fish from fermenting and to ensure the flesh remains firm.
– Drying and bringing to temperature: before cooking, dry the pieces thoroughly with a cloth or absorbent paper; allowing the fish to return to room temperature will help it retain its tenderness. Source, Spanish: https://www.eldiario.es/consumoclaro/trucos-desalar-bacalao…

HEALTH

Only six of the top 1,400 candidates in the MIR exam choose Family Medicine in Andalusia:
– The opening days of Andalucía’s 2026 MIR residency allocation process again exposed the weak appeal of Family and Community Medicine among top-ranked applicants. Only six of the first 1,400 candidates selected the specialty, despite 440 posts being available regionally. Málaga, despite offering 291 MIR places overall, recorded no Family Medicine selections during the first two days, alongside Almería, Cádiz and Huelva.
– Family doctor María Gloria López-Campos described the situation as a long-standing structural problem rather than a temporary fluctuation. She argued that applicants are increasingly aware of poor working conditions, insecure contracts, lower salaries compared with other regions, excessive bureaucracy, exhausting on-call schedules and growing workplace aggression.
– Although Family Medicine usually fills its vacancies later in the process, this often happens through elimination rather than genuine preference. López-Campos defended the specialty’s human and vocational value, but admitted that worsening professional conditions increasingly discourage ambitious applicants from choosing it.
– Difficulties in balancing work and personal life, constant exposure, including increasing assaults, and a perceived loss of social recognition complete a picture which discourages many applicants. “The system has many vulnerabilities and in the end everything falls on the family doctor,” she summarises.
– Rural areas also add specific complications. “You can spend €300 a month on petrol and they do not reimburse it,” she complains, alongside the professional isolation which characterises many placements.
– Another key factor in her diagnosis is the lack of differentiation within the system itself. “A first-year resident or a doctor from outside the EU will earn the same as me. Is it worth doing the specialty?” she asks, referring to the limited incentive after four years of residency training. HANTAVIRUS UPDATES

Alarm over 23 passengers exposed to hantavirus who returned home without health checks: {Trans, summary}
– International health authorities are monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius after 23 passengers disembarked on Saint Helena without medical checks. The passengers left the vessel before formal international health protocols were activated, despite a death already having occurred on board.
– Swiss authorities later confirmed that one of those passengers is hospitalised after developing symptoms. The WHO has now launched an international tracing operation to locate the dispersed passengers and identify around 80 people who shared a commercial flight to Johannesburg with a passenger who later died.
– The outbreak aboard the ship has so far resulted in eight linked cases, five laboratory confirmed infections and three deaths. Symptoms ranged from fever and gastrointestinal illness to severe pneumonia and organ failure. The vessel is now heading for Tenerife, where passengers will be transferred directly to the airport or to Madrid’s Gómez Ulla Military Hospital under controlled conditions intended to minimise public exposure risks. The hantavirus of the Andes, the only strain capable of being transmitted between people- symptoms, incubation and lethality: {Trans, summary}
– The WHO has confirmed that the hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius involves the Andes strain, the only hantavirus known to spread between humans. The ship, associated with three deaths, is due to dock at Granadilla de Abona in Tenerife, where foreign passengers will be repatriated and 14 Spanish passengers transferred to Madrid’s Gómez Ulla Hospital.
– Health authorities believe the infections most likely originated aboard the vessel or during excursions in rodent-infested areas. Hantavirus is mainly spread through inhalation of particles contaminated by infected rodent urine or droppings, although direct contact and, more rarely, bites or scratches are also possible transmission routes.
– The Andes strain is native to South America, especially Argentina and Chile, where previous outbreaks have occurred. Symptoms initially resemble influenza, including fever, muscle pain and nausea, but severe cases can progress to respiratory failure and death. The reported fatality rate across the Americas in 2025 stands at 25.7%. There is currently no specific treatment beyond intensive supportive hospital care.
