SPAIN

It’s Even Worse Than We Thought– The Sanchez admin used upwards of 8.5 billion euros of EU coronavirus recovery funds from Brussels in 2025 to subsidise budget shortfalls: {Summary}
– According to a report from Madrid’s El Mundo newspaper, the Palacio de la Moncloa used upwards of 8.5 billion euros ($10bn) of coronavirus recovery cash from Brussels in 2025 to subsidise budget shortfalls in the pension system for retired government workers, social security, and even the Post Office.
– This comes in addition to the 2.4 billion euros ($2.8bn) euros in EU covid recovery funds identified earlier this month by Spain’s Court of Auditors as having been improperly diverted to pay for normal domestic spending by the socialist Sánchez government in 2024.
– The newspaper noted that the true scale of the financial tactic may be yet to be uncovered, given that the government has yet to account for another 3 billion euros ($3.5bn) in EU funds that may have been spent to pay for the pensions of Spanish bureaucrats, potentially taking the total to over 13 billion euros ($15.3bn).
– German Member of the European Parliament Andreas Schwab, who serves as the head of the Budget Control Committee, told the paper that it was “absolutely unacceptable to use European funds” to cover up “budget problems in the national pension system.” He added that the EU Parliament will do what it can to “protect the interests of European taxpayers”. The leader of the eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, added: “Spain’s socialists are embezzling ten billion euros from the EU Corona fund. German taxpayer money is financing socialist mismanagement in Europe. The madness of EU joint debt must stop!” Full article: https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2026/05/14/socialist-spain-accused-of-embezzling-eu-covid-recovery-funds-to-pay-for-welfare/

The VAT on electricity and natural gas will return to 21% in June after inflation moderated to 3.2% last month: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s National Statistics Institute confirmed on Thursday that inflation eased to 3.2 per cent in April, down two tenths from March. Tax cuts on electricity, gas, pellets and firewood helped cushion war-related price pressures but these reductions end on 31 May, one month early, after inflation in those items rose less than 15 per cent. Electricity prices fell 4.3 per cent and natural gas by 9.6 per cent in April.
– VAT on electricity, natural gas, briquettes, pellets and firewood will revert to 21 per cent and the special electricity tax to 5 per cent from June, though the generation tax stays suspended until at least 30 June. Fuel tax relief continues after petrol and diesel prices rose sharply. Transport led inflation with a 6.5 per cent increase, while hospitality, alcohol, tobacco and insurance also rose notably. Food prices increased 2.6 per cent year on year, with some items remaining expensive. UGT calls for an indefinite strike of truck drivers and bus drivers starting June 8 if there is no progress on early retirement: {Trans, summary}
– The UGT union announced on Thursday a general and indefinite strike by truck and bus drivers starting June 8th to protest the continued lack of information from the Ministry of Social Security regarding the calculation of reduction coefficients for early retirement benefits for workers in this sector. The union demands written information on the status of the process and criticizes the fact that they have not been called to a meeting even once in a year. In fact, the six-month period stipulated by law has already passed, after which, if there is continued “administrative silence” regarding a proposal in this regard, the proposals are considered rejected. Although for the moment the strike is being called only by UGT, the “general and indefinite” strike in the road transport sector for goods and passengers could have an effect on supply chains and on citizens’ travel. The Government acknowledges that there are 600 drug-running boats in the Strait and increased aggression against agents and hashish trafficking from Morocco: {Trans, summary}
– The Government has acknowledged through the Department of National Security (DSN) Report that there are more than 600 go-fast boats suspected of carrying out drug trafficking operations, mainly in the Strait of Gibraltar area, as well as increased aggression from drug traffickers towards law enforcement officers, including the use of weapons of war. Added to this situation is the fact that the new drug traffickers in the Strait have lost respect for authority and have no problem directly confronting those who want to arrest them. It could be seen two years ago in the tragedy of Barbate, in which two agents lost their lives. And again a few days ago in Huelva with the death in the line of duty of two other civil guards. The Spanish Navy’s Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Center (COVAM) has estimated that “more than 600 go-fast boats are suspected of carrying out drug trafficking operations, primarily in the Strait of Gibraltar.” This puts a clear picture of the disparity in resources in the area: 20 patrol boats, one auxiliary vessel, and several helicopters to combat more than 600 drug-running boats.
– Related to maritime trafficking, the report also highlights the “significant” increase in fuel seizures in southern Spain, particularly in the provinces of Cadiz and Huelva, intended to supply drug-running boats.
– “The pressure exerted on drug trafficking in the Gulf of Cadiz and the mouth of the Guadalquivir River has caused the organizations dedicated to this illicit activity to shift their area of influence to the province of Huelva, the Guadiana River and the Algarve area in Portugal,” the document continues. The proximity to Morocco is also key when analyzing the “reactivation” of tactics such as the aerial modality using “aircraft of different types, including drones, that carry out clandestine flights between Morocco and Spain to transport shipments of hashish”, as has been proven in police operations. Sánchez isolates Spain and refuses to sign a European pact of 33 countries against illegal immigration: {Trans, summary}
– At the European Political Community Summit in Armenia on 4 May, thirty-three countries signed a declaration to combat illegal immigration, including Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Greece and Poland, even Denmark, governed by social democrats.Spain refused to sign, leaving it outside the agreement despite being Europe’s southern frontier. Spain was not among the participating countries, nor were Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Slovenia.
– The declaration called for stronger surveillance, coordinated responses, humanitarian interventions, cooperation with agencies such as UNHCR and IOM, and a focus on border security. It also urged measures against organised crime linked to migrant smuggling and trafficking, including sanctions, and agreements to deter flows from origin and transit countries.
– Spain’s refusal contrasts with the majority of European states and reflects its policy of mass regularisation, which has generated controversy and left the country isolated internationally. The declaration will remain a central topic at the next summit in Ireland. Trump Works In Mysterious Ways– The company that operates the Rota Naval Base announces a ‘temporary layoff plan’: {Trans, summary}
– The American company VERSAR VGS, which operates airport services at the Rota Naval Base, has informed the workers’ legal representatives of the start of the process for a temporary layoff plan (ERTE), a decision that has generated surprise and unease among the staff.
– According to the company, formerly known as Louis Berger, the measure is motivated by organizational and operational reasons related to the ongoing work on the runway.
– However, the workers’ legal representatives assert that the announcement has been received “unpleasantly” by the entire staff, since, they maintain, this possibility had not been raised in any of the previous discussions held with management. The committee has also expressed its “profound disagreement” with the implementation of the temporary layoff plan (ERTE) and has indicated its intention to take all legal and protest actions it deems necessary to try to stop it.
– The workers’ concerns extend beyond the immediate announcement of the temporary layoff plan. The works council fears this decision could be an intermediate step towards further staff reductions or dismissals in the medium term, in a context they describe as one of ” prolonged uncertainty.” {While labour leaders suggest these developments may be linked to previous labour conflict, the timing cannot be ignored– Trump warned of consequences for blocking military flights, and now American companies announce layoffs at the same military facility. Meloni accelerates Italy’s return to nuclear energy and Sánchez is left even more alone: {Trans, summary}
– Italy is moving quickly towards nuclear energy under Giorgia Meloni {pic}, who announced an enabling law to be passed before summer to restore nuclear power. This marks a sharp change from past policy, as Italy abandoned nuclear after a failed referendum in 2011. The country currently relies heavily on imported gas and electricity, with natural gas making up 44 per cent of its energy mix and coal and oil five per cent. Imports from Switzerland and France mean Italy still indirectly consumes nuclear power. Meloni’s plan aims to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and lower electricity costs by creating a full legal framework for nuclear plants, covering design, operation, dismantling and waste management.
– Meanwhile, Spain under Pedro Sánchez maintains its nuclear calendar unchanged, leaving him increasingly isolated in Europe as other countries push forward with nuclear revival. Cuba confirms that there is “absolutely no” diesel and fuel oil left on the island due to the US blockade:
– Cuba has completely run out of diesel and fuel oil, the country’s energy minister said on Wednesday, as Havana faces its worst rolling blackouts in decades amid a US blockade that has strangled the island of fuel. “We have absolutely no fuel (oil), and absolutely no diesel,” the energy minister, Vicente de la O Levy, said on state media, adding that the national grid was in a “critical” state. “We have no reserves.”
– The minister said blackouts had increased dramatically across Havana, with many neighbourhoods in the capital without light for up to 22 hours a day. The national grid, De la O Levy said, was operating entirely on domestic crude oil, natural gas and renewable energy. The Government reforms the pharmaceutical co-payment system: {Trans}
– The Council of Ministers has approved a new Royal Decree-Law by which modifies the system of user input in the outpatient pharmaceutical benefit.
– Among the main novelties of the regulation is the Expansion of contribution levels for individuals and their beneficiaries, which go from three to six tranches of income, adjusting more progressively the percentages of co-payment. In addition, new maximum ceilings are incorporated monthly contribution for groups with an income less than 35,000 euros, which until now were not available of specific limits, with the aim of limiting the economic impact on people with treatments prolonged and polymedicated.
– In the case of pensioners, the reform introduces also a review of the sections of contribution and monthly ceilings with the aim of strengthening the protection of people with lower incomes and guarantee the continuity of the long-term treatments. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Time to quit using Edge! Edge no longer has an AI mode because all of Edge is now AI!: {Trans, summary of 2 articles}
– Microsoft is removing Copilot mode from Edge because, according to Engadget, it no longer makes sense to have it separate. Copilot has taken over the entire browser, both on desktop and mobile, and what in July 2024 was a limited experiment (searching between open tabs, comparing products, summarizing pages) is now the ordinary behaviour of the browser.
– It is not that the feature has matured to the point where it no longer needs its own space. It is that integrating it everywhere makes it harder to question than keeping it confined to a corner where its shortcomings are visible. Microsoft has been following this pattern with Edge for months. It first presents something as optional, then gradually normalises it.
– The update introduces features that appear useful on the surface. Long term memory allows Copilot to retain past conversations. With permission, it can access browsing history to help users resume research. On mobile, Journeys provides a space to store unfinished work. Vision and Voice allows users to share their screen and receive spoken responses. Other tools compare tabs, generate summaries, and convert pages into audio.
– Taken together, these features go far beyond simple assistance. They require continuous access to user activity. Browsing history, on screen content, search behaviour, and written material can all be captured and stored as part of normal use.
– This is no longer just a browser. It is a system designed to observe and record. To function, these tools rely on cloud processing. That means user data does not remain confined to a local device. It is transmitted, processed, and in many cases stored on remote notoriously insecure servers controlled by Microsoft, as well as being shared with business partners and 3rd party service contractors.. The more features are used, the more data is accumulated. Over time, this can include a detailed record of interests, habits, work in progress, and private research. The introduction of long term memory makes this even more significant, as it shifts from temporary processing to ongoing retention.
– Users are told they are in control. In reality, most of these systems are enabled by default. Disabling them requires navigating settings and understanding what each function does. For many users, that never happens. Over time, this approach normalises continuous data collection. What begins as an optional feature becomes part of the standard experience. The more integrated it becomes, the harder it is to separate convenience from surveillance.
– By embedding Copilot across Edge, Microsoft is changing the role of the browser itself. It is no longer just a tool for accessing information. It is an active participant that observes, interprets, and stores user behaviour. For users, the trade off is clear. Greater convenience comes with deeper access to personal data. The question is not whether these features work, but what they require in return. For anyone who values privacy, that price may be far higher than it first appears. Refs:
