Your questions answered by Ruth from Compare Funerals Spain
– Why should I have a funeral plan? Having been funeral planning for over 10 year I’ve experienced some very sad and upset families when nothing is in place. A Spanish funeral plans will ensure that all costs are covered for your funeral service. Getting a prepaid plan will help you feel assured that your family will not be under any financial strain when it comes to paying for your funeral. A plan also means you can have peace of mind that everything has been organised in advance, so your loved ones do not have to make any difficult decisions.
– Why choose Compare Funerals? There seems to be a gap in Spain between independent funeral directors, offering plans at a good price but lacking the security of an established Trust or ability to cover a client overseas and Providers who seem to charge more than necessary. We want to be right in the middle and offer the best of both worlds. Our best-priced plan is only 2,250€ and does the essentials.
– Can I do a payment plan? All our plans are payable in full or over up to 5 years interest FREE. The interest free periods are based on initial deposit. The higher the deposit the less your monthly repayments will be.
– Can I transfer the plan? The answer is YES. You could name 2 people on one plan however if you had a friend/family member pass away we can transfer the plan into a 3rd party’s name.
– What happens if I move? All our plans offer the equivalent service in Spain (including the islands), Portugal, Republic of Ireland and the UK. If you moved to the UK, we would transfer the plan to one of our many partners at no extra cost to you.
– Is paperwork included? Yes, your family will receive a death certificate in Spanish and an international certification in English. We also provide a cremation certificate that allows the ashes on board a plane.

TORROX

Political division over transport consortium in Torrox: {Trans, summary}
– A political dispute has arisen in Torrox, eastern Costa del Sol, over joining the Malaga metropolitan transport consortium. The socialist PSOE group accuses the centre-right PP-led council of inaction, claiming integration was approved over a year ago. PSOE’s Mari Nieves Ramírez argues that Torrox is missing opportunities while nearby Vélez-Málaga has already joined.
– The PP’s José Manuel Fernández rejects this, citing a key technical requirement: Torrox needed to border a consortium member. He explains that this condition was only met on 1 May, when Vélez-Málaga’s entry was formalised via the Lagos area. He promises a formal proposal shortly.
– Membership would offer Torrox residents the single transport card with discounts up to 80 per cent on journeys to Malaga city centre and nearby towns. The row highlights broader transport deficits in the Axarquía, where car use dominates and public services remain limited. RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA

The From School to Theatre project hosts the ‘Rincón de la Victoria’ International Guitar Festival: {Trans, summary}
– The second edition of the ‘From School to Theatre’ project hosts the 1st International Guitar Festival ‘Rincón de la Victoria’. The program will take place on the last three Saturdays of May at the Benagalbón Center for Studies of Malaga Folklore and the Las Musas Hall (La Cala del Moral), with three concerts featuring prominent international guitarists.
– The series will begin on May 16th at the Benagalbón Folklore Center with the concert “Breath of Water” by Andrea Vettoretti. In this work, the Italian composer and guitarist explores water as a living being, the origin and memory of life, giving voice to its breath through music.
– The Sala Las Musas will host the festival’s final two events. On May 23, “The Circular Sound,” by concert guitarist and composer Christian Lavernier, will take place, and the festival will conclude on May 30 with “The Spanish Concert Guitar,” by renowned guitarist Javier García Moreno from Málaga. Entry will be free until capacity is reached. Source, Spanish: https://www.axarquiaplus.es/el-proyecto-de-la-escuela-al-teatro-acoge-el-festival-internacional-de-guitarra-rincon-de-la-victoria/

ALMUÑÉCAR

The PSOE asks the PP what happened to the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) and the 1,500 homes they promised 3 years ago for Almuñécar and La Herradura: {Trans, summary}
– The PSOE in Almuñécar and La Herradura accuses the PP of failing to approve the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU, Plan General de Ordenación Urbana) despite governing both locally and regionally since 2019. They argue the plan is essential for managing growth, supporting economic activity and enabling affordable housing, particularly for young residents.
– Socialist representatives criticise years of announcements without results and demand explanations from Juanma Moreno Bonilla and Juan José Ruiz Joya during the election campaign. They highlight that a 2023 pledge linked to the PGOU to enable 1,500 protected homes remains unfulfilled.
– The PSOE emphasises that the plan defines land use, infrastructure and legal certainty for residents, businesses and investors. They claim delays have contributed to housing shortages, especially for young people and seasonal workers, and insufficient public facilities. They call for clear timelines, accountability and concrete progress instead of political messaging. Source, Spanish: https://www.almunecarcomunicacion.com/el-psoe-pregunta…

IMMIGRATION IN SPAIN

Why Other EU Countries Believe Immigrants To Spain Will Relocate To Other Countries Once They Get Spanish Residence: {Trans, summary}
– Other EU countries believe that immigrants to Spain will relocate elsewhere once they obtain Spanish residence, as Spain has a limited retention capacity. A Funcas study reveals that between 2002 and 2024, nearly 15 million foreign-born people arrived, but the real population increase was only just over seven million – approximately one in two migrants left. Spain’s retention rate, around 51% between 2021 and 2025, is among Europe’s lowest.
– The report notes Spain attracts efficiently but does not retain with the same intensity, requiring very high inflows to sustain a constantly renewing population. Immigration does not solve the demographic imbalance but acts as a temporary, diminishing cushion. The authors warn that Spain has implicitly delegated to migration flows a function that should be complemented by family, housing and territorial planning policies. The report also reveals that reproductive behaviour of immigrant women converges with the current native low fertility rate within one generation. The proportion of older immigrants is growing rapidly- in 2025, 22% of resident immigrants were aged 55 or older. Territorial inequality exists, with aged regions like Asturias receiving little rejuvenation. The strategy of delaying full ageing through immigration shows clear signs of exhaustion. EUROPE

New blow to the hospitality industry- countdown to the disappearance of single portion packets of jam, sugar and ketchup: {Trans}
– The classic ketchup sachets, the small butter and jam tubs served at breakfast, and the milk capsules for coffee (not so common in Spain) are numbered in European catering. Spanish bars and restaurants have barely three months to adapt to new EU rules requiring a reduction in single-use plastic packaging.
– This change comes with Regulation (EU) 2025/40 of the European Parliament and of the Council, approved on 19 December 2024 and effective from 12 August next. The aim is to cut packaging waste, and the consequences again fall on bars and restaurants, which must reorganise at Brussels’ pace.
– The measure directly affects thousands of catering outlets, fast-food chains and similar venues. They must replace many current single-serve formats with bulk dispensers, glass jars, paper sachets or compostable packaging. The ban covers plastic single-serve containers typically used for sugar, salt, spices, ketchup, mayonnaise, dressings, honey, jam, butter or coffee milk. However, paper sachets and certified compostable plastic (allowed only until 2030) are permitted.
– Exemptions include takeaway food and hospitals or care homes where individual packs are needed for hygiene or safety. No fines exist yet; Member States have until 12 February 2027 to set penalties. From 1 January 2030, all EU packaging must be recyclable.
{Note: In 2014 Spain forced the hospitality sector to adopt single-serve packets (for quality control and to prevent tampering), and the EU is now forcing them to abandon those same packets (for waste reduction). Royal Decree 895/2013 (effective 1 January 2014) banned the traditional refillable glass oil dispensers (“aceiteras”) found on restaurant tables. It required bars and restaurants to serve olive oil only in non-refillable, tamper-proof bottles, or, single-serve sachets or capsules. However, enforcement was lax and has faded somewhat over the years. -Ed.}

UKRAINE WAR

Zelensky accuses Russia of “ending” the ceasefire with new attacks against Ukraine: {Trans, summary}
– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday accused Russia of “ending the partial silence” of recent days, referring to the 72-hour ceasefire between May 9 and 11, by launching more than 200 drones against various points in the country, including the capital, Kyiv. He added that Russian troops had also dropped “more than 80” aerial bombs on various points along the front, which were also hit by “more than 30 airstrikes.”
– For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defence has indicated on social media that Russian forces have intercepted 31 drones launched in recent hours against the regions of Belgorod, Voronezh, Volgograd and Rostov, without commenting on possible casualties or material damage. – The British government of Keir Starmer is facing a tense moment following calls for his resignation from 70 Labour MPs. Furthermore, within his own government, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has suggested to the Labour leader that he consider a timetable for his departure, according to The Times. The newspaper also reports that at least two other ministers have suggested the same, just hours before his cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning. SOCIAL MEDIA

Instagram removed end-to-end encryption from its private messages on May 8th:
– This decision means that Meta, Instagram’s parent company, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, can now freely access the conversations of its millions of users, compromising the only real protection that existed in Instagram chats. The direct consequence is an unprecedented loss of privacy on the platform. According to the expert, Javier Castilla, head of data and artificial intelligence at COPE, at a technical level, the current situation allows “an Instagram technician, for any reason, to access that database and read your messages.” Furthermore, he warns about the long-term implications, as a potential change in regulations could allow the use of this information in the future. “Right now, these messages we have could remain stored on Instagram’s servers for years, if they want,” he stated.
– Given this new scenario, the expert’s recommendation is clear: “don’t use Instagram messaging” if you’re looking for privacy. For secure conversations, he suggests alternatives like Signal or Telegram for those who want a higher level of protection, with options like self-destructing messages. HEALTH

Spaniards flee from public health; private insurance skyrockets by almost 50%: {Trans, summary}
– Between 2015 and 2025, private health insurance penetration in Spain rose by almost 50%, according to the IDIS Foundation. The sharpest rise occurred in Cantabria at 149%, followed by Navarre at 106% and the Valencia Community at 64%. However, the highest absolute level of private cover is in Madrid, where 37% of residents have private insurance, followed by Catalonia at 31% and the Balearic Islands at 30%. Andalusia sits in the middle of the table with 21% private cover. The average waiting time for a first specialist appointment in the public system has reached 102 days, peaking at 162 days in the Canary Islands, 152 in Navarre and 138 in Aragon. By contrast, Madrid records 68 days and La Rioja 32 days.
– These long delays are driving Spaniards toward private insurance. Meanwhile, premiums are rising, partly due to increased demand and partly due to separate tax increases imposed by Pedro Sánchez’s government. The Minister of Health, Mónica García, has repeatedly opposed private healthcare. Spaniards are leaving the public system as private cover expands, yet political hostility toward the private sector persists. HANTAVIRUS UPDATES

A Spaniard isolated in the Gómez Ulla Hospital tests “provisionally positive” for hantavirus: {Trans, summary}
– A Spanish national isolated at the Gómez Ulla military hospital in Madrid has tested provisionally positive for hantavirus after arrival, although he remains asymptomatic and in good condition (see update below). Final results are pending. The other 13 passengers from the MV Hondius have tested negative but remain in quarantine.
– The group of repatriated Spaniards comes from several regions, including Catalonia, Madrid and Asturias. The hospital has increased staffing by 90 personnel to manage the 14 passengers. Authorities state that quarantine began on 6 May and could last up to 42 days.
– Separately, a woman in Barcelona is under observation after contact with a confirmed hantavirus case during an international flight. She has tested negative and shows no symptoms. Another woman in Alicante is also being monitored after multiple negative PCR tests and remains asymptomatic. Health officials continue precautionary monitoring despite the generally stable condition of all individuals. UPDATE: Spanish citizen who tested positive is showing symptoms: {Updated 9:20am, 12 May}
– The Spanish man who initially tested positive for hantavirus in the first PCR test presented symptoms on Monday night, including a low-grade fever and decreased oxygen saturation, although he is currently in stable condition. The patient, admitted to isolation at the Gómez Ulla Hospital in Madrid, will undergo a second PCR test on Tuesday to confirm the infection. According to the WHO, hantavirus can be transmitted days before the infected person shows symptoms: {Trans, summary}
– The World Health Organization states that hantavirus can be transmitted even before symptoms appear, with individuals potentially infectious a couple of days prior to feeling unwell. Although peak contagiousness occurs when symptoms begin, this early transmission risk justifies strict precautionary measures.
– Passengers from the MV Hondius are required to remain under medical supervision for up to 42 days, reflecting the long incubation period, which can extend to six weeks after exposure. Authorities stress that quarantine is necessary because individuals can be infectious before symptoms appear, so isolation prevents them from transmitting the virus unknowingly.
– There is no specific treatment, so early detection and isolation are essential. Some current suspected cases may later be confirmed, reinforcing the need for continued vigilance. Quarantine may take place either in medical facilities or at home, but the priority is preventing transmission during the pre symptomatic phase and ensuring rapid response if symptoms develop. The ‘EU WHO’ considers contact of just 15 minutes at two meters to be a “high risk” for hantavirus: {Trans, summary}
– The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the leading health authority in the European Union, states in its reports that exposure of one to two meters for 15 minutes to a confirmed or probable case of hantavirus constitutes “high-risk contact .” This definition clarifies one of the major questions surrounding the disease, given the lack of precision in the term “close contact” used by authorities.
– While high transmission rates of the virus are not widely accepted, some precedents have shown that the Andes strain, responsible for the outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, has a remarkable capacity for contagion. In Argentina, between 2018 and 2019, 34 cases developed, with 11 deaths. The high fatality rate is undoubtedly the most worrying aspect of hantavirus, as is the lack of vaccines and specific treatments.
– Experience has also shown that there are super-spreaders, those with a high viral load and a greater capacity to transmit the virus. Source, Spanish: https://okdiario.com/espana/oms-ue-considera-alto-riesgo-hantavirus-contacto-apenas-15-minutos-dos-metros-16777706

THE ARTS

Eurovision not to be aired in Spain, Ireland, Slovenia:
– The public broadcasters of three European countries, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia, on Monday, announced that they would boycott the 70th Eurovision Song Contest by not airing it. The song contest has been at the center of controversy with several countries calling on Eurovision’s organizers to exclude Israel following the Gaza war.
– Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland and the Netherlands announced last year they were going to boycott the 2026 song contest over Israel’s participation. Iceland and the Netherlands will broadcast the contest, that is set to run between Tuesday and Saturday, on television even though they aren’t taking part.
