Student Accommodation – Advice Please

My stepson (20) hopes to start an IT course in September and we’re looking at various options. Centres offering the course include Vélez-Málaga, Torrox, Málaga and Periana.
Does anyone know:
1 – If there is a student hostel in Málaga, and if so either costs or contact details?
2 – If there is/will be a room in a house we could rent cheaply, in any of the other locations?

This last academic year there have been free Spanish lessons run by Torrox ayuntamiento in the small school behind Lew’s cafe (formerly Lew’s fish and chips).

Sergio is the teacher and he needs as many registrations for next years class in order to justify the class. This years term finishes next Wed. but he will be there until the end of June for registration and enquiries.

This year we had 7 hours of lessons per week and we need at least a dozen people to register.

If your Spanish needs improving please register. You are not obligated to attend every lesson but go when you can. Make new friends as well.

I would like to transport a bubble wrap pool cover and the roller from UK to Competa.

The cover is rolled up, is 175cm long x 100cm diameter and weighs 29kg. The roller is broken down to just the poles bundled together and is 170cm long x 50cm diameter and weighs 22kg.

Has anyone any space and I can contribute to your costs.

Going from Northampton, but I can get it to you anywhere in UK.

Recommendation-Restaurant Sollun – Nerja

We have just discovered this excellent restaurant in Calle Pintada, Nerja. The food is fantastic and for us this is the best restaurant we have found in the area. It’s not cheap by local standards, but it offers beautifully presented, tasty food and for us was well worth every euro. The chef and owner is very friendly and exudes enthusiasm for the food he prepares. If you enjoy large portions and always want your food served with potatoes or rice it won’t be for you. The perennial problem of ants seems to be worse this year, at least in my neck of the woods.

Can any Digamites recommend any product or chemical which actually works to eradicate ant colonies? I have tried a couple of proprietary products which claimed to do so, but with no visible success.

Dog Fostering System – Advice Needed

I wonder if someone could answer a query as I’ve no idea how the fostering system works. I have had an offer of fostering for Bella from Irene who says she can probably foster her until the end of August which is great news as I have to go back to the UK to sort out my 94 year old father who has had a fall.

However, as it’s impossible for me to have her back (I may have to stay in the UK), what happens after August? Does it mean that, once she is in the system, she will be found another fosterer or adopter or would it be back down to me to find someone else?

To be honest I’m getting quite desperate as I just can’t keep her but don’t know what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am told it is a place where ferias are normally held but there should be plenty of “Motos” signs when you arrive.

It should start at abou 12 to day Saturday and continue until to morrow afternoon.

I too have wondered what it was and where etc having seen a tiny article in the paper a few weeks back. After much searching I have found a bit more info after Googling ‘Sonrisas sobre Ruedas’.

The main car park in Torrox where the olive press is has been cleared to put up a stage so I presume the concert is there. Still not sure about the procession but there is a Facebook page but as I’m not on Facebook I can’t read it! https://www.facebook.com/Sonrisas-Sobre-Ruedas-455235037996356/

As usual here it is a struggle to find info about activities that are going on, and we usually read about it after the event as it wasn’t publicised well.

Gas Man Warning

Be on the look out for a blue Renault Megane, registration 6016 HWF. The men in this car arrived at our house in the campo, we are about 3kms out of Torrox on the old Frigiliana road. One man insisted that we needed a butane gas certificate, when we told him that we did not need one he became very abusive and when I went to take photos of him and his car he became very aggressive before driving off in haste. We have reported this to the Guardia Civil in Torrox and given them photos of the car and man.

Sunglasses Lost – Prescription Ones

I lost a pair of sunglasses on Wednesday 15th in the Torrox Costa area, They were in a soft black pouch. They are prescription sunglasses so would be of no use to anyone else. If anyone has found them my Spanish number is 693498713.

Recent Agua Fuerte warning

Just to be clear about this… The term “agua fuerte” simply translates as etching or even strong water. It is archaic term, and not precise a chemical description.

Mercadona’s widely used Bosque Verde brand of the product is clearly labelled “20% Hydrochloric Acid”.

All such strong acids should be handled with extreme caution: gloves, covered flesh, eye protection – as contributors have rightly described. In the UK, you would not find such a product on open sale in supermarkets.

Agua Fuerte Warning

Contrary to the previous post this is not concentrated hydrochloric acid but actually dilute nitric acid. It does however burn skin and gives off toxic nitric oxide fumes when reacting with lime scale. It can stain stainless steel sinks. It is undoubtedly effective, but used with the area well ventilated, wear durable rubber clothes and thoroughly wash it away after it has done its job. Vinegar is dilute acetic acid and whilst obviously safer does not have the power of Agua Fuerte.

Abandoned Puppy

Please can you help? I have yet another abandoned puppy.

She was left at the bin just down the track and, according to the vet,

is about 12 weeks old..

No collar and a few tics.

Lovely nature.

I’m at my wits end at the mo with my 94 year old dad in the UK that

I’m going back over regularly every 6 weeks to look after

My usband who’s had a stroke and can’t be left alone for more than a few days and, of course, my own two dogs.

I just can’t take another dog on, even to foster, as my OH just can’t manage it all when I’m not here.

People keep telling me to just dump her somewhere but I can’t do that.

I’m willing to pay for her to be spayed and contribute to her food costs if someone could be found to foster her.

PLEASE can you help? I’ve asked for help five times now with various dumped puppies so I’m hoping this time I might be lucky.

I’d love to foster her but it’s just impossible while things are so difficult.

I’ve already contacted the AAR, Malaga Rescue, the vets and all the neighbours. I’ve no idea what else to do??

I took her to the vets where she was checked over, de-lead and wormed.

She is 15 Kilos at the mo and isn’t going to be a small dog.

The vet thinks lab cross.

Any help or advice would be appreciated as I can’t keep her for much longer.

However, it opened up to the public in 2004 so that people could come and enjoy a day off with wolves, learning about their various life habits as well as different types of species and how they differ from each other. Pack life styles and dynamics can also be observed at the park.

The Lobo Park is built to provide the wolves with an environment that resembles their natural habitat. This allows the wolves enough space to display their innate traits, as well as play and run around freely. The tours are designed so that this natural behaviour can be observed, and the fear that most people have of wolves is cut down notably.

Only Daniel Weigend and Alexandra Stieber hand-raise the wolf cubs. This is a very complicated task, and no mistakes can be afforded. For this reason, not even park-workers and volunteers are allowed to touch the wolves. Daniel and Alexandra do it with high caution and carefully. The reward in turn is the trust they earn from the wolves, who greet them as friends when they visit rather than as outsiders to the pack. This de-socialization and socialization are important aspects in the process of gaining familiarity so that wolves do not turn in to pets, and continue to act true to their nature.

The park offers fun and excitement to families with a day closer to nature. The spacious landscape provides a refreshing change to the visitors, who not only enjoy the wolf packs and their various play and hunt habits, but also enjoy a luxurious natural reserve. The tours are conducted by professionals who are well-aware of wolf psychology as well as of the different pack forces and vibes. It is educational as well as a way to relax.

Is this your Cat with Two Collars pics

This cat has been a regular visitor to our house in Pago Manzano Alto, Torrox for the past few months. He is very nervous and I cannot approach him but I managed to photograph him this morning. Despite being involved in some serious fights with our own 4 cats he is a persistent visitor, often seen close to our cat flap.

I’m sure he was fatter when he first appeared here and the fact he is wearing 2 collars makes me think he was owned by someone and is not a typical campo stray cat. One collar is a brown plastic flea collar, and the other is a patterned one with a plastic clip fastening and a ring that looks like it is for attaching a lead.

Recommendation –Taxi Services

We recently used “Taxi No. 8 – David Jimenez” to take us from Caleta de Velez to the airport and to collect us on our return.

We had seen his advert on the side of a kiosk by the church in Torre del Mar and another near the car park in Supersol (just outside Torre del Mar).

The taxi arrived promptly at our house and the driver was waiting in arrivals on our return.

The price was 50 euros each way.

We thought the price was good and the service excellent.

Kittens Galore

Billie, Bambi and Bobby were all born around April 1st.

They’ve been treated against fleas, ticks and worms and have had their first vaccinations.

Now all they need are homes.

Billie is female, the other two are male.

Billie and Bambi are sister and brother and their mother gave birth to them

on the doorstep of a very kind lady who took them in and looked after them

so they have been brought up as domestic cats.

Poor little Bobby was found abandoned at an unofficial cat feeding station

so he is a little more timid.

However, having been put together with the other two, he has blossomed and, like them, loves his playtime and cuddles and has a lovely loud purr.

A big thank you to the person who found a wallet and diary in the vicinity of the new Mercadona in Nerja on Saturday and handed it in to the store. There had not been credit cards in in the wallet and only a little cash, but the diary is full of phone numbers.

Agua Fuerte warning!

Someone recommended agua fuerte for household use. Take care, it is concentrated hydrocloric acid! The vapors are dangerous to inhale. And destroys all metal parts.This stuff shouldn´t be commonly available!

Try in vinegar instead, soak some paper tissue o place on vertical surfaces. Perhaps use the 8-10% versión, which can be found in supermarkets (Mercadona) among cleaning stuff.

Rentals- Opinion

I think I speak on behalf of many property owners on the Costa del Sol.

For many years I have rented my apartment to cover the overheads and running costs. I have not been in the business of making a profit.

My actions have bought many visitors to the Costa who have supported the local ecomomy by spending in the shops, restaurants, bars, transport etc.

For my own use and for rental clients, I have scrupulously provided a well maintained and clean property which has also provided employment for local builders, renovators, cleaners, and maintainance services.

Initially the development of the property bought in resources to Spain and helped to build the infrastructure now available to the local residents.

The new rental laws are so demanding that many ordinary people will no longer offer their premises for rental.

A great loss to the Costa economy and my many Spanish friends who own businesses and who have benefitted from the influx of rental clients and my own regular visits.

Cal build up can be easily removed with agua fuerte unless you have a septic tank

Available at most supermarkets and Chinese bazaar stores.

Alternatively slowly pour a full can of coca cola into the bowl and leave overnight. When you see the result you will think twice about drinking the stuff Lol!

Warning – Pickpockets in Torrox Costa

A friend was leaving a Torrox Costa Hotel hen a couple approached him – offering a map and asking for instructions to reach a chosen destination locally.

Whilst examining the map – which was a very strange one – he became aware that the “wife” was trying to get her hand into his wallet pocket. The woman was of Moroccan appearance.

He reacted very angrily to her and to the “husband and they scuttled off very quickly indeed.

Basically – the advice is – if anyone approaches you, asking for directions …… be Extremely Wary! JK

Burglaries Algorrobo Campo

These burglaries may well be connected to similar occurrences in the Cacin (near Alhama de Granada) area a month ago. Three good class, temporarily unoccupied, dwellings in rural locations were broken into overnight on a Friday.

Severe damage was caused and the common denominator was the removal of fridges and freezers so a large vehicle would have been needed.

Police and CIS officers attended and advised that gloves were used. Interestingly, and quite shocking, the lead officer said that up to 50 similar breaks had occurred since January this year, all at unoccupied premises. There is no suggestion of picking on expats as most of the homes are Spanish owned, one by a Guardia officer!

Although one would hope that the Police are doing their job in liaising between areas to compare notes I would urge the victims to advise the officers dealing of these similar breaks.

Foster Home Needed Please

Please can someone foster these two pups?

They were dumped in a bin when they were just three days old.

They are now four weeks old and are fully weaned.

They need to leave their current foster home on Tuesday but we have nowhere for them to go.

They are smashing pups, full of fun and loving life.

Ideally we would like them to stay together for a few more weeks, but as the situation is desperate we would split them up if necessary.

Axarquia Animal Rescue will supply a crate and anything else that you need.

What’s on-Trip to Benalmada

The Phoenix Club are off to Benalmadena to visit the Butterfly Park and the Buddhist Stupa on Friday 8^th July 2016.

The Butterfly Park, Benalmadena

The butterfly park is situated just next to the Enlightment Stupa. In keeping with an ‘Eastern’ theme, the design of the butterfly park is Asian and built to resemble a Thai temple. Indeed, most of the building materials have been imported directly from Thailand, with the characteristic blue tiles made specifically for them in Chang Mai.

Upon entering the Butterfly park you are automatically transported to the hot and humid jungles of South-East Asia, with wall-to-wall tropical vegetation, waterfalls and exotic animals. The highlight of which is, of course, the humble butterfly. With over 1500 exotic butterflies from 150 different species there is a lot to see.

The 2000m2 complex has its climate carefully controlled with the temperature set between 24-29ºC and around 80% humidity.

70% of the specimens in the park are self-produced and the remaining 30% are imported from their country of origin. There’s a special nursery, where visitors can watch the different biological cycles and transformations the butterflies go through.

Almost everyday, a new specimen is born; visitors can watch as the butterflies break out of their cocoons and spread their colourful wings for the first time.

Most species of butterflies have an average life expectancy of two weeks. This means that the park’s population is renewed every 14 days!

After the visit there is free time to explore the Buddhist Stupa.

In Buddhism, a stupa is a monument which represents peace, prosperity and harmony, as well as being a place for meditation. Benalmádena Stupa (Chan Chub Chorten in Tibetan) symbolizesBuddha‘s enlightenment, the realisation of the nature of mind, and is one of the eight different forms that stupas are built.

Whereas stupas are typically sealed structures, the Benalmádena Stupa is unusual as there is a 100 square metre meditation room and a room that can be used for exhibitions about Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan culture inside the structure. The walls of the meditation room are painted with the life story of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni.

Lunch of Fish ‘n’ Chips can be pre-ordered if desired or there are plenty of other restaurants close by to try. After lunch we will pop down to the Marina for ice cream.

Two Stray Puppies – Need A Good Home pics

We have two stray puppies, a brother and sister, that look like a form of Setter (but my wife and I are not experts). They wandered onto our property a couple of days ago and deserve to have a good home. As we have gotten to know them we’ve learned they would make ideal pets. They don’t bite or nip, are very even tempered and sweet-natured, love and trust people, and are great around children (including our own toddler, who will be sad to see them go). They also appear to be quite trainable. As you can see they are quite skinny and could use a proper vet to look them over. They don’t appear to have any serious issues that we can see beyond ticks, but we’ve only had them a few days.

Sadly, we cannot keep them for various reasons and are looking for someone to give them the home they deserve. Please get in touch ASAP if you are interested. We are located in the Salobrena area. Thanks

What’s on-Demonstration bronze casting 16 & 17 June 2016 Galeria Luz de la Vida, Competa

Hi art-lovers,

From 12 till 18 June Dutch bronze-caster Daan van Neerven comes to Competa, Spain.

We’ll make moulds on little sculptures on Monday 13 & Tuesday 14 June.

At Wednesday a bus with 50 kids will come (from Alozaina, near Malaga) with 3 teachers for an ‘creative’ excursion.

Kids of age 15 will visit Competa especially to see the bronze casting process and to do 2 workshops. One painting workshop will be given by Danish Artist Eva Joensen, and one will be given by Dutch/ African Moira Mitchinson. She will teach them the beginner-steps in clay. It is an excursion organized by a teacher and me. Hopefully they will all enjoy the special day in Competa!

At Thursday 16 June & Friday 17 june there will be a demonstration of the bronze casting 2 times a day:11:30 & 13:30 p.m.
