SPAIN

Rebellion in Germany over Sánchez’s pension payment with European funds– “Unacceptable. Major scandal!”: {Trans, summary}
– The use of European funds by Spain’s Government to pay pensions has triggered strong backlash in Germany, escalating into a broader political dispute. The controversy began after Spain’s Court of Auditors revealed that €2.39 billion from EU recovery funds had been redirected to cover pension obligations due to budget shortfalls. While the Spanish Government described the move as a routine technical adjustment under extended budgets, German officials reacted sharply.
– Andreas Schwab, Chair of the European Parliament’s Budgetary Control Committee, called the practice unacceptable, framing it as misuse of EU funds to mask national pension deficits. Germany, as the main net contributor, bears much of the cost. “It is our taxpayers’ money, it cannot be handled negligently. The EU is not a self service. This undermines credibility and trust in the EU”, he stated.
– German criticism has been amplified by wider concerns about transparency, echoing earlier claims that tracking EU funds in Spain is difficult. Additional pressure comes from the European Taxpayers Federation, which has demanded accountability, repayment, and legal action. In a post on his X account, sharing the German newspaper’s report, Schwab warned Sánchez that “funds must be managed properly”.
– Schwab replaced Monika Hohlmeier on the committee. In 2023, Hohlmeier’s visit to Spain was controversial due to her claims that “it was impossible to trace the funds” in the country.
– “Three years after Hohlmeier’s visit, we still do not know where the European funds are in Spain. There is a complete lack of transparency from Sánchez’s Government. It is impossible to track the money”, said PP MEP Isabel Benjumea.
– Benjumea argues that using European funds to pay pensions “is just the tip of the iceberg, because we do not know what else is being done with the funds”. She added that EU law prevents their use for current expenditure such as pensions, and that Spain’s lack of an approved budget forces reliance on these funds.
– The dispute highlights tensions between national fiscal management and EU oversight, with Spain’s reliance on EU funds amid the absence of a formal budget drawing scrutiny. The episode has fuelled a narrative of mistrust, with German voices portraying the situation as a serious breach of financial discipline. Prosecutor’s Office asks to reopen the case of the three Mossos investigated for Puigdemont’s escape: {Trans, summary}
– The Public Prosecutor’s Office has appealed the decision of the investigator to close the case opened against three agents of the Mossos d’Esquadra for allegedly having helped the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont to flee after his visit to Barcelona on August 8, 2024, sources from the Public Prosecutor’s Office have informed Europa Press.
– In his appeal, he asks the Court of Barcelona to revoke the decision of the head of the Court of Instruction 24 of Barcelona, who at the end of April agreed to the provisional dismissal of the case opened against the three Mossos, investigated for a crime of concealment.
– The Public Prosecutor’s Office opposes shelving the case and argues that, despite the fact that the agents under investigation were not working that day, they were still subject to “all the obligations inherent to the function they perform.” “It does not seem necessary to remember that a police officer is a police officer, whether he wears his uniform or not, and the obligations assumed as an official concern him until he loses that status for the legally established causes,” remarks the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
– According to the prosecutor, the agents of the Mossos had the “obligation” to arrest the former Catalan president, given that “there was a crime for which Puigdemont had the status of being investigated” and “his contumacy in abstracting himself from the action of justice had led to the Supreme Court issuing an arrest warrant, publicly known”.
– For the Prosecutor’s Office, which refers to several images captured by security cameras and incorporated into the investigation, it is “evident” that there was a “coordinated and organized action in which the investigated and the partner of one of them, not investigated as he is not an official, carried out a previous elaborate plan which was intended to allow Puigdemont’s public appearance on the day of Illa’s investiture and subsequently facilitate his escape by preventing compliance with the Supreme Court’s arrest warrant”.

ALMUÑÉCAR

“Eat, Laugh, Dance” premieres in Almuñécar, a flamenco show full of tradition, humor and celebration around the table: {Trans, summary}
– Almuñécar will host the premiere of the flamenco show “Come, Laugh, Dance” on Thursday, 28 May, 9pm, at the Casa de la Cultura. Created by Teresa Barbero’s company, the production is designed for all audiences and combines dance, singing, guitar and percussion. The performance centres on themes of shared meals, social gatherings and celebration, reflecting everyday Andalusian life.
– Local authorities have emphasised their support for home grown artists, highlighting Barbero’s long artistic development and connection to flamenco. The show presents a mix of traditional elements, such as bata de cola and classic flamenco forms, alongside a lighter, more informal tone with some comic moments.
– Barbero describes the production as both a celebration of life and a personal reflection on her artistic evolution after more than thirty years in flamenco. The event aims to connect with audiences through familiar cultural experiences while showcasing her distinctive style and stage presence in a lively and accessible format.
– Tickets for the premiere can be purchased online (€18) at [https://bravoentradas.es/es/events/come-rie-baila-de-teresa-barbero]; at the Casa de la Cultura box office; and at Azul Marino Viajes. Source, Spanish: https://www.almunecarcomunicacion.com/come-rie-baila-estrena-en-almunecar…

IMMIGRATION IN SPAIN

Turnaround in immigration in Spain– the ‘over-54s’ are the group that increases the most, and will not finance the deficiencies of the pension system: {Trans, summary}
– Immigration in Spain is no longer strongly rejuvenating the population, as the over-54 group is growing fastest. While earlier migration waves were young, ageing among settled migrants and rising arrivals of older individuals, often through family reunification, have shifted the age profile upward. Those over 54 have more than doubled their share among the foreign born, and between 2021 and 2025 their numbers rose far faster than younger groups. Retention is also much higher among older migrants, meaning they stay and age in Spain to collect full pensions they only partly pay into, while many younger migrants leave and do not pay into the pension system.
– As a result, immigration only partially offsets demographic ageing and does not change the structural trend. Experts argue it cannot solve low birth rates, as migrants face the same economic and social constraints and adopt similarly low fertility patterns. The long term outlook suggests ageing pressures will intensify as an increased population moves into retirement. UK

Pressure mounts on Starmer- he rules out resigning while more than 80 MPs call for his departure: {Trans, summary}
– Pressure continues to mount on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign amid growing disapproval of his handling of the crisis and to set a timetable for his departure from power. Starmer faces pressure from over 80 Labour MPs who are demanding his resignation following the party’s electoral defeat in last Thursday’s general election.
– The Home and Foreign Ministers have asked him in recent hours to end his term. The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Miatta Fahnbulleh, submitted her resignation on Tuesday, disagreeing with the Prime Minister’s handling of the situation and urging him to “do what is right” for the United Kingdom. The British Minister for Child Protection, Jess Phillips, and the Minister for Violence against Women, Alex Davies-Jones, have also resigned, according to The Guardian. The BBC, citing Downing Street sources, reported that more ministerial resignations are expected throughout the afternoon. British Health Minister Zubir Ahmed has joined the resignation in protest against Starmer’s leadership. “It has become clear over the last few days that the people of the UK have irretrievably lost confidence in you as Prime Minister,” the Health Minister told X, adding that “it is evident” that achievements are “overshadowed by a lack of values-based leadership at the centre.” Source, Spanish: https://cadenaser.com/nacional/2026/05/12/aumenta-la-presion-sobre-starmer…

MIDDLE EAST

Soaring inflation and plummeting economy test Iran’s ability to withstand war and US blockade: {Summary}
– Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz is throttling the world’s energy supplies and inflicting global economic pain, but the struggles of the Islamic Republic’s own economy are testing its ability to withstand the war and defy Washington’s demands.
– Iranians have been hit by spiraling prices for food, medicine and other goods. At the same time, the country has seen mass job losses and business closures caused by strike damage to key industries and the government’s monthslong shutdown of the internet. The economic cost of the war and the U.S. naval blockade “has been very substantial and unprecedented for Iran,” said Hadi Kahalzadeh, an Iranian economist and research fellow at Brandeis University. “Iran can probably avoid a complete economic collapse or total shortage of essential goods, but at a very high cost,” he said. “The main cost will be passed to ordinary Iranians through higher inflation, more poverty, weaker services and a much harder daily life.”
– Meanwhile, Iran’s rial currency has lost over half its value in the past year, falling to a record low of 1.9 million to the dollar at the end of last month. The economic woes helped fuel massive protests that spread across the country in January. Full article: https://apnews.com/article/us-blockade-iran-war-inflation-80d0a5ca469d61c2e2e76d42c556a6de

TECH

If you own one of these three Samsung phones (Galaxy A13, Galaxy A23 and Galaxy M33 5G), this is important for you– they’ve lost support, will no longer receive software updates or security patches: {Trans, summary}
– Support updates are patches and improvements that manufacturers release periodically for operating systems. They are vitally important for eliminating vulnerabilities, correcting errors, adding new functions and optimising device performance to extend lifespan alongside security.
Mobile phones do not always receive them, because manufacturers quit supporting them once the device has reached what they consider the end of its useful life. These unsupported devices become more exposed to possible security flaws, in addition to no longer being compatible with some applications.
– In this context, Samsung has announced the end of support for three very popular models from its mid-range. Samsung has closed the door, regarding support updates, on the Galaxy A13, Galaxy A23 {pic} and Galaxy M33 5G models. They report that the company has confirmed that these phones will receive no further software updates or new security patches.
– These three devices first appeared in April 2022 with Android 12, and Samsung promised they would have four years of support, plus the corresponding operating system updates, improvements and security patches. Regarding how these mobiles progressed, the A13 and A23 received two major Android updates, ending with Android 14.
– As for the M33 5G, it reached Android 16, after receiving four major system updates. From now on, these models might receive an occasional update if a major emergency security problem arises, though this is unusual. New mid-range Samsung mobiles now have up to six years of official support. New Android Devices Go Full AI, Full Surveillance– Google revolutionises Android with Gemini Intelligence, the biggest change in Android’s history: {Trans, summary}
– Android 17 introduces Gemini Intelligence, shifting Android into an AI driven system that understands context, automates tasks across apps and processes on screen content. It will analyse images, complete multi step actions, convert notes into purchases and operate across devices including phones, cars and computers. Chrome browser gains AI summarisation and automation tools, while autocomplete now pulls data from connected apps to fill complex forms. The Rambler function enables natural speech to text, even across mixed languages. Users can generate custom widgets, and creators benefit from improved HDR, video stabilisation and editing tools. Android Auto is upgraded, and a new Googlebook laptop category integrates Android and Chrome OS with AI features.
– Despite claims of user control, these functions will require your device to constantly share virtually everything you do with the Gemini AI central servers. The system relies on continuous AI scanning of screen content, app data and user behaviour to function, raising clear concerns about privacy and data exposure across devices and services. Editor’s Comment– Are There Any Secure Mobile Phones?:
– Short answer is yes but many are out of stock currently due to chip shortages. Also, the most secure mobiles will not allow many popular apps to be installed. Forget about Apple or Android mobiles if you seek security, you must look elsewhere.
– One thing most people get wrong– the operating system is only half the story. Regardless if you use Android, iOS or a Linux based mobile these all share the same problem.
If you still use: WhatsApp / Gmail or any Google tools / cloud backups / social media / messengers…then even a “perfect” private phone won’t actually be private. Those apps all collect user data and share it with their business partners and 3rd party service providers.
– If you want to do your own research regarding secure mobiles, these fit the bill and are available.
Purism- Librem 5 [https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/]
Purism- Liberty Phone [https://puri.sm/products/liberty-phone/]
These use Linux based operating systems, not Android/Google/Apple, they eliminate dependence on Google services and may include hardware kill switches. On phones like the Purism Librem 5, you typically get kill switches for:
*Camera and microphone, Cuts both at once, no recording possible
*WiFi and Bluetooth, fully disables wireless connections
*Cellular modem and GPS, stops mobile network tracking and location
– On the Librem 5, flipping all switches puts the phone into a “lockdown mode”. You can use it off-line without leaking what you are doing.

HANTAVIRUS UPDATES

French hantavirus patient is critically ill and on an artificial lung as outbreak grows to 11: {Summary}
– A French woman infected in the deadly hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship is critically ill and being treated with an artificial lung, a doctor at the Paris hospital caring for the sickened passenger said Tuesday. The outbreak has now reached 11 total reported cases, 9 of which have been confirmed.
– With the evacuation of all passengers and many crew members completed, the MV Hondius is now sailing back to the Netherlands, where it will be cleaned and disinfected.
– “At the moment, there is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director general. He added: “But of course the situation could change, and given the long incubation period of the virus, it’s possible we might see more cases in the coming weeks.” {“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”- Rahm Emanuel, 2008. Often misattributed to Churchill– no evidence exists that he ever said these words. Churchill may have said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” But no primary source or speech transcript has ever been produced proving Churchill said that either. -Ed.} Full article: https://apnews.com/article/hantavirus-outbreak-hondius-cruise-ship-ac42357c5c3ae1694a93f1d43ba38bdb
