Progress of Roadwork in Nature Park Now the work around Cerro Gavilan appears to be finished, so they have moved on to the road going down to P. Collado (pink in revised map I included earlier this week)). I guess that this will be finished soon. For walkers, a good alternative (approx. same length) is to take the road towards Casa la Mina and climb up the path from the pylons just before C.d Mina. Some work is also going on along the road to Puerto Blanquillo (I´ve seen a sign). Anybody knows about this? Birgit

Can anyone please identity these centipede/millipede wormy looking creatures?

Ranging from 2 or 3 cm long up to 25 or 30 cm, they have a brown leathery banded appearance. We only see them after rain or chilly conditions. Also how do I get rid of the blighters? They walk through ant powder and soil insecticide powder… Cheers.

Abandoned Dog – Torrox Campo

May this hopefully be the last post for this poor soul. This brown and white whippet type dog may not be unknown, but I know that the Spanish farmer in Manzano Alto does not want it. He has offered to gift it to another dog walker in the area. Neighbours have fed it and shown it some love and care. He/she has been wondering the campo for around three months now and is just looking for a home. The dog needs someone to take it on once and for all. Disappointing Transaction – Lesson Learned I communicated with a ‘gentleman’ in Vélez about an adjustable hospital-type table – the sort which goes over a hospital bed. We arranged to meet at a given time at the bus station there – I don’t live near there – and I gave him my phone number. I also asked for his phone number in case there were any problems, as I’d be meeting him direct from a hospital appointment and didn’t want to leave him hanging around. I never received the man’s phone number and he never turned up for our appointment. This is therefore a word of advice: if you’re buying from anyone and not meeting at either house, make sure you exchange numbers before you set off. It will save you time, money, effort and frustration. Not everyone is as gullible and naïve as I turned out to be! Michael.

Please Help Biggal

Please help find Biggal. Lost from Benamargosa Village on Wednesday 18th October at Midnight. Medium sized, 7 month old, Male Podenco, Light brown. He had a beige collar on with a lead attached. He is very timid but a really sweet dog and will be hiding out in the Campo anywhere in the Benamargosa, Los Romanes, Cutar, Río Gordo, Comares, Los Hijanos, Triana areas. If you live in the Campo please keep an eye out for him. He is chipped so if you do see him please try and catch him or call 674662432. More information can be found on the AAR Facebook site.

Know this cat ? We live on the border of Archez and Canillas de Albaida and have had a ginger tom with a very short tail stealing our cats’ food for at least a year. I am now feeding it but it is upsetting our two so I propose having it neutered and either adopting it or (preferably) finding it a home. It is affectionate and loves a stroke so it’s not feral. Non Spanish Residents – Property Tax If you are not a Spanish resident but own a property in Spain, you will need to fill out a tax form each year to declare your “imputed” income from your property (even though you do not rent it out). This should not be confused with your IBI which is a council tax and your Basura tax to cover rubbish collections. You will not necessarily be reminded that you owe Non-Residents’ tax and it is your responsibility to pay it before 31st December each year. Any unpaid tax has to be settled when you sell the property but you may well also be fined and/or be charged late-payment interest. To pay the tax, you need to fill out Modelo 210 which can be downloaded from the Tax Agency’s website (www.agenciatributaria.es). Many people use a tax adviser or gestor to fill in the form but they charge in the region of 100 euros which is often a lot more than the tax itself. Steven Rowle and the Trouble with Staffys

I was prompted to write this short piece, after recently being called in to TAIL, the dog recue centre in Torrox Costa, to review a dog called Flower. Flower, as can be seen by her picture is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and had been having some problems. The trouble with Staffys is they are on the dangerous dogs list in Spain and have been since 2008, which means you should have a dangerous dogs licence, know as a PPI licence, to keep one. There are quite a few hoops to jump through to get one, including having no criminal record and a psychological test. There must have been a crack-down of late, as there has been a sudden increase in Staffys being abandoned. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier resembles other tough breeds like the American Staffordshire and Pit Bull, and in certain circles in Spain are obtained for fighting, but these sturdy dogs look a lot tougher than they really are. Staffys would much rather romp around and play all day than fight, or even stand around and look imposing. They have a zest for life and love to be with people and they don’t particularly care what the activity is, watching TV, walking, running or going for a ride in the car, the Stafford just wants to be with the people he or she loves. They also don’t like to make their own choices about what to do, and therefore don’t like being left alone, so Staffordshire Bull Terriers are best suited for active families where someone is always at home with them. Despite their imposing look, Staffys are actually very good with children. Toddlers are not always recommended, but older kids who understand a dog’s boundaries will find that a Stafford will gladly accept the role of best friend and playmate. Flower is no exception, after a thorough review and socialisation she has proved she is no different to any other Staffy and just wants a home and to be loved.
