You can also see Christmas illuminations of the city, especially the Larios. There will be time for refreshments or dinner before joining the coach at 22.30 for the homeward journey. Car Boot/Market: Sunday 1st December is the date for the Christmas Car boot sale/market at El Pantano Restaurant car park, overlooking Lake Vinuela. 9.30am to 1.pm. Easy to find on the A356 towards Colmenar.
Drive over the bridge crossing Lake Vinuela and the car park/bar is just ahead on the right hand side. Plenty of parking.
There are always bargains galore, old and new.
-Lots of locally grown fresh fruit and veg. Mango. Avocado. Lemons.
-Homemade chutney, jams and marmalades for the Christmas table.
-Plants, shrubs, flowers and herbs.
-Greetings cards.
-Christmas decorations.
-Always a good selection of DIY tools.
-Large selection of paperback and hardback books and DVD’s
-Lots of household and garden items for sale on many of the stalls including various Christmas bargains.
Come along and enjoy a morning browsing and picking up a few bargains for Christmas at this well established monthly market, which attracts visitors from far and near. A super location. The restaurant has shaded terraces overlooking the lake and many customers sit and enjoy a coffee or a tapa and a drink and catch up with friends and acquaintances for a chat. Many even stay and choose lunch from the varied menu available.
Bar is open from 9.30am serving coffee/drinks/food.

This Saturday the 30th of November Indian evening in Competa: Galeria Luz de la Vida presents an Indian night on the 30th of November!
Lieuwke Loth who runs the galeria Luz de la Vida in Competa has been traveling in the November month. She was invited to the 3rd International Art Symposium Chitrashaala in India. (www.http://chitrashaala.com/)
It took place from the 3rd till the 8th of Nov. 43 artists from all over the world came especially for this gathering to the Lake Nahargarh Hotel in Rajasthan. For 4 days all artists created art, they shared their experiences of their profession. The art symposium was the mean reason for Lieuwke to travel to India, but she also visited other parts of beautiful Rajasthan, like Udaipur, Pushkar, Jaisalmer. In Pushkar she celebrated with more then 1000 Indians the Camelfair and the holy full moon event.
Lieuwke will continue organising art events in Competa. For her next art Symposium LUZ she met interesting artists from Egypt, Thailand, Japan and India.
-The 30th of November at 6pm Lieuwke shows pictures of her travels, and tells about her experiences in the amazing country. She will also tell about the art symposium in India. Marga, who always caters the Symposia in Competa, will prepare Indian ‘Tapas’ for the evening and Lothar and Lukasz will make the evening complete with their ‘intuitive, Asian’ music on the hang and didgerido.
Feel very welcome to dive into Indian vibes this evening. Lets enjoy together a bit of exotic India in Competa! Sat 30/11 at 6pm -till 9 or 10pm

Action for Animals Quiz: It’s time to book your table for the final quiz of the year. It isn’t a Christmas quiz, but there will be a prize for the best Christmas team name. Chimney Sweep Recommendation: We needed a sweep before the onset of winter knowing we had a hornet’s nest in there. Diego was originally booked for last Thursday but it was a bit wet for roof work! He came on Saturday despite being advised it was a bit windy. No problem, the only Spanish workman I have ever seen with a safety harness! He is a recommended worker, clean, prompt and effective not too expensive either.

Six of the country’s top ten public hospitals are found in Madrid and two are in Barcelona. Valencia also has one hospital ranked in the top ten, as does Seville.
University Hospital La Paz in Madrid has the best reputation of hospitals in all of Spain, followed by Barcelona Clinic, Gregorio Marañon Unversity Hospital in Madrid and then October 12 Hospital, also in Madrid.

Why cancer patients in Spain are changing address to stay alive:
Almost half of all oncologists in Spain are reporting huge disparities between different regions in terms of patient access to the latest life-saving cancer treatments, spurring many patients to pack up and move (at least on paper).
Time is of the essence when it comes to cancer and stopping it in its tracks.
But in Spain, a country where bureaucratic holdups are part and parcel of daily life, the repercussions attached to slow public service delivery in the health sector can prove lethal for some.
Spain’s Society of Oncology (SEOM) has just released a study that highlights the huge disparity in waiting times for newly approved cancer medications between the country’s different autonomous communities.

People from Costa del Sol are invited to Fuengirola for Mammogram and Ultrasound screening: The next Mammogram/Ultrasound morning organised by La Cala de Mijas charity Positively Pink will take place on Tuesday December 3 from 11.30am to 1pm at Clinica Radlologica Fuengirola, c/Jacinto Benavente 10, 1-3 Fuengirola 29640.
You will need to bring with you a copy of your British Passport which needs to be left and they ask for a donation €20 to help cover the cost but on this occasion no appointment is necessary.
If there is a very large turnout then vouchers will be issued to allow for the screening to take place at a later date.
There is also the chance for men to obtain vouchers for their own check-ups for Prostate Cancer and they may be collected at the same time for a donation of €10 but the bloods will take place in Calahonda by appointment.

Christmas Market and Dog Show in Nerja Dec 14th: A special fundraiser will be held in Nerja to support APA Nerja, Spain, an animal charity which cares for abandoned and ill-treated animals.
On December 14, a Christmas Market and Dog Show has been organised from 11am at Chiringuito Playazo on Playa Playazo, where attendees can meet dogs and visit stalls offering a host of festive products.
The wonderful event aims to raise money which is urgently needed to pay for vet bills and to keep dogs safe at the animal shelter whilst they wait for their forever homes. Many of the dogs which APA Nerja look after have sadly been abandoned or abused by their owners.

The Torrox Spanish History Group: Peter Alfondoulis gave a talk on the battle between the Arabs and the Catholics which took place on the 25th August, 1330. with Sir James Douglas (also known as Good Sir James and the Black Douglas) getting caught up in the battle carrying the heart of Robert the Bruce to the Holy Lands.
As a result of Peter (Alfondoulis) a coach trip has been organised on the 3rd of December to Teba where the battle took place and where there is a memorial to Sir James Douglas and Robert the Bruce.
As we make our way there we will also be visiting El Torcal known for its unusual landforms, and regarded as one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. We will also be visiting the Famous Dolmens in Antequera which have been declared a World Heritage Site. The Neolithic Dolmen of Menga represents one of the most important structures of the Megalithic architecture.

Mountaineering for beginners in Las Alpujarras: “The Poqueira valley is the perfect place to get started in medium- and high-mountain [climbing],” says Jesús Espinoso, founder of the company Nevadensis, which manages the information center at the Sierra Nevada National Park in Pampaneira, and has been guiding groups through the mountain range for 30 years. Pampaneira’s closeness to the Mediterranean Sea calms the weather conditions during a large part of the year. From the Poqueira refuge, which is 2,500 meters above sea level and open year-round, visitors can explore six routes – the circular route that passes by several lagoons, two routes which follow different tracks to the Alcazaba peak (3,364 meters above sea level); one that leads to Veleta peak (3,396 meters) and two others to Mulhacén, although there are more ways to reach the summit. Oil fired boiler engineer: Long shot I know but are there any digamites out there who are or knows one that is an oil fired boiler engineer. The dodgy boiler is a Ferroli Atlas D30K 100 and provides hot water and central heating. It has history. The two issues with it are too difficult to explain here but a quick phone call will be advisory. If anyone can help I would be forever grateful especially if they can fix it.

Some owners of illegal homes still ignored by new law, says SOHA: President Philip Smalley and spokesperson Mario Blancke of SOHA (Save Our Homes Axarquía) have expressed their concern that that the new decree passed in September by the Junta de Andalucía “leaves out people who had their building licences annulled”.
While the campaigners said that they would “always support any initiative taken by the Junta to help legalise homes,” the latest ruling “makes the same mistake as previous ones,” with respect to the annulled licences.
“This time is no different and it leaves out those who bought in good faith and are victims of local authorities, the only entity able to issue the permits,” Blancke said.
The new decree means that the 68,652 properties recognised by the regional government as being irregular can now be registered. However, this still leaves a high number of property owners off the list. “Our fight must continue,” added Blancke.

There is a Eucharist every Sunday from November through to March, and there is a Eucharist service on every alternative Sunday (1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in April, May, September and October). There are no services during the hot summer months of June, July and August.

12.00 noon – Iglesia de San Miguel, Plaza Andalucía. There is a Eucharist service at this time throughout the year. The church is within easy walking distance of the first large roundabout as you drive into town from the Malaga direction, by the bus station.

Another blunder by Spanish owned UK Bank: An overnight error with its computer system has meant that thousands of customers of the TSB Bank (which was taken over by Spain’s Banco Sabadell) have been left without funds. Salary payments, pensions and other transfers did not go into customer accounts as they should, leaving many in a difficult financial situation, unable to pay bills which were falling due.

9.30 am – Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (The Fishermen’s Chapel). This small chapel is situated towards the western end of the beach and set back near the Chinasol Hotel and seafront. There is a Eucharist every Sunday from November through to March, and there is a Eucharist service on every alternative Sunday (1st and 3rd Sundays of the month in April, May, September and October). There are no services during the hot summer months of June, July and August.
Nerja
12.00 noon – Iglesia de San Miguel, Plaza Andalucía. There is a Eucharist service at this time throughout the year. The church is within easy walking distance of the first large roundabout as you drive into town from the Malaga direction, by the bus station.

The Andalusian International Artists art group will be showing their new works; and the musical entertainment will be provided twice a day by the acapella singing group Reflections, who will be featuring classics such as California Dreaming, Country Roads and Sentimental Journey.
Health will be taken care of at the show by the La Cala Lions Diabetic Support Group and Sontec, who will be giving free glucose and hearing tests respectively. Free legal, financial and consumer advice will also be available.
Finally space has been set aside for fitness and relaxation with a programme of free pilates and yoga sessions with Anandala Laie Studios.

At 15.30 you will join the coach for a short journey to visit the very large garden centre of Guzman, in Alhaurin del Torre. You will be able to purchase plants, shrubs and other items for your garden, interior decorations and gifts from the shop, and you will be able to admire the beautiful Christmas display, maybe purchasing your Christmas decorations. There is also a restaurant for refreshments. After the visit you will rejoin the coach at 17.30 for the homeward journey. Ticket price available at the Centre 16 Euros with Friends of Lux Mundi card 15 Euros. Christmas Fayre at St George’s Anglican Church Malaga City at Avda de Pries 1 (in the grounds of the English Cemetery) on Sunday, December 1, with doors open at 12.30pm. You can expect to see a whole selection of Christmas Gifts, baked goods, second-hand books and clothing as well as a tombola and admission is free.

 

Crossing of Costa Tropical Mountain in Almuñécar: This Sunday (November 24), Almuñécar, Spain will host the Popular Crossing of Costa Tropical Mountain. Now in its tenth edition, the event seeks to promote hiking in the coastal area, highlighting the region’s wealth of cultural attractions and landscapes.
Organised by the El Sendero Club, the route will cover 16.6km with a medium level of difficulty.
The registration fee is between €16 and €20 and includes a walker’s bag with a T-shirt, certificate and food vouchers inside. El Sendero Club will also provide breakfast, lunch and refreshments, with participation limited to 150 people.

Wood Fired Oven Class: One day open air cookery course in the mountains of the Alpujarras, Granada.
Come and enjoy a full day cookery course learning how to use and enjoy a wood fired oven. We will prepare a variety of tasty dishes during the day, from making your own bread to cooking a main course and baking a dessert. We will demonstrate different cooking techniques and then you will get to try them yourself. There will also be an opportunity to learn about building, lighting and running your own wood fired oven. This is a very ‘hands on’ course’. You will also have a tour of our extensive garden here and select herbs to flavour your bread which you will later bake and take home with you. At the end of the day we sit down together and enjoy the flavours we have created.
