Sánchez will not appear before Congress to “report” on the PSOE’s corruption cases until the end of June: {Trans, summary}

Spain’s Supreme Court Allows Challenges to Mass Immigrant Regularisation Scheme, but not ready to halt the program yet; court split on some challenges: {Trans, summary}
– Spain’s Supreme Court has agreed to hear challenges against the Government’s extraordinary immigrant regularisation programme, while refusing requests to suspend it immediately. The court accepted Vox’s legal standing, arguing the measure could indirectly affect Spain’s electoral register and political representation in future, although it acknowledged that newly regularised immigrants would not gain voting rights automatically and would still face years before possible naturalisation.
– The court rejected precautionary suspension requests from Vox and the Community of Madrid, ruling that no irreversible harm or obvious illegality had been proven. Madrid had argued that regularising more than half a million undocumented immigrants could place major pressure on housing, healthcare, education and social services.
– The ruling also exposed judicial division. Two conservative judges issued a dissenting opinion claiming the decree may conflict with the incoming European Pact on Migration and Asylum, especially regarding migrants with active expulsion orders. Critics described the measure as resembling an “administrative amnesty” that could undermine enforcement of immigration sanctions and European return procedures. Doñana National Park Fire Controlled: {Trans, summary}
– The fire declared in Doñana National Park could be officially declared extinguished and fully contained within the next few hours, according to the acting Andalusian Minister for Health, Presidency and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz. Speaking in Jaén, Sanz explained that the fire “is in the final containment and extinguishing phase” with cooling operations under way and that the objective is “to declare it extinguished imminently”. The emergency plan director also recalled the difficulties firefighting teams encountered in tackling the blaze because of access problems in both the marshlands and the dunes, as well as the strong prevailing winds.
– According to SEO/BirdLife, based on the most up-to-date available information, the fire may have devastated around 400 hectares of landscape characteristic of Doñana, including juniper groves, pine forests and the interdunal valleys known as “corrales”. The fire affected numerous Habitats of Community Interest, including stone pine forests, scrubland and coastal dunes, which are associated with many threatened plant species, several of them at the end of their reproductive cycle, potentially creating an additional problem for their natural regeneration. In the affected area, the presence of coastal juniper woodland stands out, one of the most important in Europe, along with the clavelina flower. Málaga Loses €1 Billion Chip Investment Due to Electricity Shortage: {Trans, summary}
– Málaga has lost a proposed €1 billion investment from Diamond Foundry, a US synthetic diamond chip materials company backed by Leonardo DiCaprio, because the province could not provide enough electrical capacity. The company wanted five megawatts to begin operations at Málaga TechPark but was only offered one, leading it to choose Zaragoza instead. Torrox Costa brings together the European elite of beach handball at the Diego Carrasco Cup: {Trans, summary}

Vélez-Málaga asserts its connection with Don Quixote at the 1st Cervantes Conference: {Trans, summary}
– The Department of Culture of the Vélez-Málaga City Council has organized the 1st Cervantes Day in the City of Vélez-Málaga, an initiative designed to highlight the close historical relationship between Miguel de Cervantes and the capital of the Axarquía region. This connection was immortalized by the author himself in the pages of his masterpiece, Don Quixote, following his stay in the town at the end of the 16th century due to his work as a tax collector.
– The Councillor for Culture, Alicia Ramírez, emphasized that the goal is to establish the Casa Cervantes as a permanent cultural centre dedicated to the Spanish Golden Age. It’s worth noting that the municipality has been a member of the Network of Cervantine Cities since 2023.
– The commemorative event will take place next Saturday, June 6th, and will be divided into two free sessions. Registration is now open at the Culture Department or by calling 667389530.
– The program will begin at 11:00 AM in Plaza de las Carmelitas with a guided, dramatized tour of places frequented by the writer, such as the Pósito (municipal granary) and the Beniel Palace. Netanyahu orders Israeli troops to seize 70% of the Gaza Strip:
– Benjamin Netanyahu has said he has given orders to the Israeli army to seize control of 70% of the Gaza Strip in a move that threatens to torpedo an already fragile ceasefire and create catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the already devastated territory.
– Under the US-brokered ceasefire in October, the Israeli army withdrew to a demarcation line which gave Israel direct control of 53% of the occupied territory. Since then, Israeli forces have steadily advanced their positions westward into the Hamas-controlled half of the strip, and declared an ever-expanded no man’s land west of that, within which they claim the right to decide who can enter and open fire on anyone perceived as a threat.
– The Israeli prime minister said: “We are currently squeezing Hamas. We now control 60% of the territory in the strip. You know, we were at 50, we moved to 60. DuckDuckGo Installs Surge 30% as Users Reject Google’s AI Search:
– Google announced its biggest Search upgrade in 25 years, but few seem impressed by its new AI features. Since the event, users have been flocking to DuckDuckGo, a rival search engine that lets them disable AI features altogether.
– “People aren’t just complaining about Google’s AI search overhaul; they’re leaving,” DuckDuckGo tweeted on Tuesday. “Yesterday alone, our week-over-week installs surged 30% in the US. Momentum is growing. It’s time to Fire Google.”
– According to data shared with Tom’s Guide, DuckDuckGo’s app installs increased by an average of 18.1% week-over-week between May 20 and May 25 in the US. The installs were significantly higher on iOS devices, averaging 33% week-over-week with a peak of nearly 70% on May 25.
– “Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out. As a result, their results are getting worse, not better,” DuckDuckGo founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg tells Paul Thurrott. “We want to be the place that puts users in charge and allows them to decide how much or how little AI they want. That’s why we’re seeing a spike in people coming to DuckDuckGo this week.”
– DuckDuckGo’s No AI website, which by design avoids AI features, has also seen a surge in visitors. Users increased by 22.7% week-on-week, with a peak growth of 27.7% observed on May 24.
– DuckDuckGo does have its own AI features, such as a duck.ai chatbot for back-and-forth conversations and a Search Assistant for an AI Overviews-like summary for your search. However, you can easily disable them from the app or website’s settings. It also gives you the option to hide AI-generated images from search results.
– Google, on the other hand, has been pushing down organic results and promoting AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search. In a survey published by DuckDuckGo earlier this year, 90% of respondents said they didn’t want AI in search.
