SPAIN
Health authorities detect a new positive case of hantavirus among the Spaniards confined in the Gómez Ulla hospital: {Trans, summary}
– The Ministry of Health has confirmed a second hantavirus case linked to the MV Hondius cruise outbreak. The patient, a close contact under preventive quarantine at Gómez Ulla Hospital since 10 May, tested positive during routine checks but remains asymptomatic. They were transferred to the High-Level Isolation Unit for specialised supervision. Authorities stress the case was detected within existing isolation measures, so the risk to the general population remains unchanged. Initially, this patient and others were expected to leave quarantine after 14 days, but the new PCR result extends confinement.
– The ministry clarified that the other 12 quarantined individuals are unaffected, as they remain isolated under strict safety protocols. According to updated guidance, those testing negative at 28 days, on 7 June, may complete their quarantine at home. Voices calling for Sánchez to bring forward elections are growing: PP, PNV, CC, Felipe González and García Page: {Trans, summary}
– The indictment of former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the cases of alleged corruption surrounding Pedro Sánchez’s government, such as the ‘mask case’ which has former minister José Luis Ábalos in the dock or the investigations affecting his wife, Begoña Gómez, or his brother, have increased the pressure for the head of the government, Pedro Sánchez, to bring forward the general elections. However, the Prime Minister has made it clear in recent months that he will not call early elections.
– However, Zapatero’s indictment and the information emerging from the investigation have unleashed a political earthquake in parliament, and some PSOE partners are already saying that “it is very difficult for Sánchez to complete his term.” Thus, this Sunday, the president of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), Aitor Esteban, described as “irresponsible” Sánchez’s continued “without direction, without a budget, without a stable majority, and with an uncontrolled and legally contested agenda” beyond 2026. “Anything goes here,” he exclaimed at an event in Durango (Vizcaya), where he noted that “there are already nine open cases” and “now Zapatero.”
– And this Monday, it was Cristina Valido, spokesperson for the Canary Coalition in Congress, who declared the current legislature over and stressed that “the logical thing” would be to call elections this year to “clean slate” in 2027 and begin working with a new government.
– This Monday, former Prime Minister Felipe González called for early elections, while defending Zapatero’s presumption of innocence, whom he does not see as “capable of setting up a financial scheme” like the one he is witnessing.
– Meanwhile, the political debate has been revolving for a week around a possible motion of no confidence, a request that Vox put forward last Tuesday, May 19, immediately after Zapatero’s indictment became public.
-In Genoa, the PP leadership continue to delay the motion, maintaining that this initiative is “doomed to failure” at this point because the numbers don’t add up. “We’re four votes short,” they exclaim in the PP leadership. The PP don’t want to risk a losing vote, that would only serve to support and embolden Sanchez. Hazte Oír asks Judge Calama to indict Zapatero’s two daughters and wife: {Trans, summary}
– The human rights organization Hazte Oír, acting as a private prosecutor, has asked the judge in the Plus Ultra case to formally charge the wife and two daughters of former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who is being investigated in this case as the alleged leader of an influence-peddling scheme.
– Hazte Oír filed a motion early Monday morning requesting that National Court Judge José Luis Calama formally charge the former prime minister’s daughters (Laura and Alba Rodríguez Espinosa) because they “appear as joint administrators and partners of the company Whathefav,” identified as a key part of the financial network being investigated. The motion also requests that Sonsoles Espinosa, Zapatero’s wife, be charged as a co-owner of an account that allegedly received funds from the company Análisis Relevante, also under investigation. AXARQUÍA
Cats are victims of violence in two towns in the Axarquía, shootings and poisonings: {Trans}
– The City Councils of El Borge and Benamocarra, warn of the situation that is occurring in both municipalities with cats. As reported by Eugenio Cabezas in Diario SUR, the City Council of El Borge published a notice this past Friday after becoming aware of “various events related to shootings and violent acts against cats” in different areas of the municipality.
– This Monday it was the turn of the Benamocarra City Council, which on its social networks has shown its “concern” about the recent cases of cat poisoning detected in different areas of the municipality.
– Both consistories have recalled that animal abuse is totally prohibited and can lead to serious administrative sanctions and even criminal responsibilities, in accordance with current legislation on animal protection and welfare.
– According to SUR, the mayor of El Borge told them that in recent weeks, they had detected several cats, injured by pellet shotgun shotgun shots.
– Benamocarra recalled that in the municipality they have “the collaboration of the Feline Association of Benamocarra, in charge of managing and caring for the feline colonies of the municipality, as well as communicating any incident to the City Council and the competent authorities”. TORROX
Torrox asks the Regional Government to join the Transport Consortium, plus updates on other agreements: {Trans}
– The ordinary plenary session of May unanimously approved requesting the municipality’s adhesion to the Metropolitan Transport Consortium of the Málaga Area, an integration that until only a few days ago was technically unfeasible due to legal requirements. With this initiative, Torrox joins Vélez-Málaga, which officially adhered to the consortium on 1 May, as well as other municipalities of the Axarquía region such as Rincón de la Victoria, Totalán and Riogordo, already part of this network.
– According to the PP spokesman, José Manuel Fernández, the process is now unlocked as Torrox has become a neighbouring municipality to a consortium member through the locality of Lagos, a technical advantage also used by nearby towns such as Algarrobo. Following unanimous support, the public law agreement will be sent immediately to the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga to formally begin proceedings.
– Future integration will bring significant economic benefits for users, allowing access to the single card with savings of up to 80% on urban journeys and notable discounts on interurban trips to destinations such as Málaga city or Rincón de la Victoria.
– They also unanimously approved improving the Roman Site at the Torrox lighthouse.
– In contrast, the PP government team, with PSOE and IU voting in favour and VOX abstaining, rejected two socialist motions on housing and community rehabilitation. The local executive justified its refusal by stating that while urban planning is already managed by the Town Council, housing responsibilities belong to the State and Junta de Andalucía. NERJA
Nerja is becoming a giant ‘hotel’- one in four homes is now used for tourist purposes: {Trans, summary}
– Of Nerja’s 16,621 homes, 4,305 are officially registered as tourist accommodation properties, equivalent to roughly one in every four homes in the municipality. The town also has 8,172 secondary residences, almost matching the 8,449 permanent homes, showing how much housing has shifted away from full-time residential use.
– The spread of holiday lets has reduced the stock of long-term rental housing because many owners now favour short-term tourist rentals with higher financial returns. As a result, finding permanent rental accommodation has become increasingly difficult, particularly for local workers and younger residents. The shortage of available long-term housing has coincided with continued increases in both rents and property purchase prices.
– During the summer season, the sharp growth in visitor numbers also increases pressure on local services and infrastructure as the town’s population rapidly expands service capacity demands.
– Nerja now has one of the largest concentrations of non-hotel tourist accommodation in the Axarquía and wider Málaga province, with holiday homes outweighing hotels and regulated apartment complexes. The Municipal Program for the Ethical Management of Feline Populations of Nerja begins its public information period: {Trans}
– The Councilor for Health and Environment of the City of Nerja, Javier Rodríguez, informs that after the publication of the announcement regarding the initial approval of the Municipal Program for the Ethical Management of Feline Populations in the Official Gazette of the Province of Malaga, a period of public information is opened for 30 working days for the submission of allegations and suggestions. During this period, citizens will be able to consult the document at the municipal electronic headquarters. If no allegations or complaints are submitted, the programme will be definitively approved and will enter into force after the full publication of its final text.
– This program will allow the City Council to advance in a responsible, ethical and planned management of the feline colonies of the municipality, reinforcing the welfare of community cats, health control and neighbourhood coexistence, in accordance with current regulations on animal protection. Among other measures, it contemplates the application of the CER method (Capture, Sterilization and Return), the identification and health monitoring of animals, as well as the regulation of citizen collaboration and caretakers of feline colonies. – The Almuñécar City Council is finalizing preparations for the celebration, this Saturday, May 30, of the Almuñécar-La Herradura 2026 Associations Meeting, one of the most established participatory and social events in the municipality, which will bring together more than 40 groups and associations from different social, cultural, educational, health, neighbourhood and solidarity fields. Former Scottish National Party chief pleads guilty to embezzling $540,000:
– Former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell {pic} pleaded guilty on Monday to embezzling more than £400,000 ($540,000), admitting diverting funds from the party to buy items such as cars, a motorhome and luxury goods.
– Murrell is the former husband of ex-SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, who suddenly resigned in 2023, shortly before she was arrested as part of the probe into the party’s finances. She was cleared of wrongdoing in March last year. After Murrell’s plea, Sturgeon reiterated her innocence and said that she had “no knowledge or suspicion whatsoever that he was using SNP funds for personal purposes.” “I am utterly appalled that he did so and cannot begin to understand why,” Sturgeon said. “I was misled just as others were.” Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/former-snp-chief-pleads-guilty-embezzling-540000-2026-05-25/
UKRAINE WAR
Russia threatens strikes on Kyiv defence sites, urges foreigners to leave:
– Russia said on Monday that it intended to launch “systematic strikes” on targets in Kyiv linked to the Ukrainian military as well as decision-making centres, and urged foreigners to leave, a day after one of its heaviest bombardments of the city since the start of the war.
– Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement, that the impending strikes were “in response to the continuing terrorist attacks by the Kyiv regime” against civilians in Russia. The statement said Russia’s armed forces “are starting systematic strikes on facilities located in Kyiv that are used for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as on centres where the corresponding decisions are being made.” Full article: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/energy-infrastructure-damaged-missile-attack-russias-belgorod-region-local-2026-05-25/

WHO chief warns Ebola outbreak ‘outpacing us’ as deaths hit 220:
– The spread of one of the world’s most feared viruses has left responders ‘playing catch-up’ in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The head of the World Health Organization has raised the alarm over the speed of the current Ebola outbreak in central Africa, which has so far claimed at least 220 lives.
– “We are urgently scaling up operations, but at the moment the epidemic is outpacing us,” Director-General Tedros told a meeting of the African Union that health workers are “playing catch-up” as the number of suspected cases tops 900.
– The response has been hampered by fear, anger and frustration among locals, including attacks on treatment centres, as well as distrust of authorities in a region long plagued by armed violence. Ebola patients flee in attacks on Congo health facilities, hobbling response:
– Doctors operating on the front lines of the fight against Ebola in Congo, already grappling with shortages of basic supplies, are now also having to deal with attacks on their facilities and fleeing patients as the virus spreads rapidly.
At least three such incidents have occurred in the northeastern province of Ituri where the first Ebola cases were reported, including two at the weekend targeting the same hospital that permitted more than two dozen patients to run away. The attacks recall the widespread violence targeting health facilities during a 2018-2020 outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that killed more than 25 health workers. At the Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital, located in Mongbwalu town where many cases have been reported, 18 Ebola patients fled on Saturday after “unidentified individuals” burned tents, erected by medical tents where patients were being isolated.
– The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, the third-largest such outbreak on record, a public health emergency of international concern.
– WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday there had been more than 900 suspected cases in the outbreak so far, including 101 confirmed cases.
– On Monday, Tedros said there had been 220 suspected deaths in the current Ebola outbreak and that a delay in detecting cases meant responders were now “playing catch-up”. Tennis News- Swiatek cruises; Wawrinka and Monfils conclude French Open chapters, as both play in their final seasons:
– Four-times French Open champion Iga Swiatek charged into the second round with a comfortable victory on Monday, a 6-1 6-2 victory over Australian Emerson Jones. But another much-admired player in Paris was unable to extend his stay as Stan Wawrinka bowed out of Roland Garros for the final time.
– French favourite Gael Monfils, who like Wawrinka will end his career when the season concludes, was also unable to keep his campaign going and fell 6-2 6-3 3-6 2-6 6-0 to compatriot Hugo Gaston in the evening clash on Court Philippe Chatrier. PRODUCT ALERT
The OCU denounces inflated prices of 30% on packaged fresh filleted fish in supermarkets: {Trans, summary}
– The OCU reports that pre-packed fresh fish, especially small varieties like sea bream and sea bass, can be 30% pricier than similar fish from supermarket fish-counters. Buying from the counter, where fish is cleaned on request, proves cheaper. For large cuts of hake or salmon, the price difference is minimal, so counter purchases are not always cost-effective.
– The OCU criticises the decline of traditional fish counters, which reduces personalised advice and variety, and increases plastic use, harming the environment.
Supermarkets like Mercadona are replacing counters with ‘Central Workshop’ ready-prepared sections. Pre-packed fish offers convenience, standardised portions, and speed, but limits freshness checks (eye brightness, gill colour) and consumer choice, and eliminates less common, cheaper seasonal species.
– The OCU warns that convenience must not justify shifting costs onto consumers and nature via excessive plastic packaging, contrary to EU sustainability goals.
