SPAIN
Electricity and gas return to 21% VAT: {Trans, summary}
– Spanish consumers face a significant increase in their energy costs starting today, Monday, June 1, 2026. After months of temporary tax reductions to help mitigate the inflationary crisis, the Value Added Tax (VAT) applied to electricity and natural gas has permanently reverted to its standard rate of 21%.
– This withdrawal of tax breaks is not an isolated measure. In the case of electricity, it is compounded by the full reinstatement of the Special Tax on Electricity (IEE), which is being scaled back from the technical minimum of 0.5% to the traditional 5.11%. The combination of these two measures will have an immediate impact on the household budgets of millions of families and businesses.
– The final increase in bills will depend on the volume of energy used and the size of the home. According to financial simulations published by the energy supplier Niba, the estimated monthly impact based on consumption profile is divided into three main groups:
*Households with low consumption: Small homes or second residences with a base expenditure of €40 before taxes will see their bill rise from €44.22 to €50.87. This represents an additional cost of €6.65 per month.
*Households with average consumption: A typical family apartment with a base expenditure of 70 euros will experience an increase from 77.39 euros to 89.03 euros, paying 11.64 euros more per month.
*Households with high consumption and businesses: Large properties or small businesses with a base cost of 120 euros will see their bill jump from 132.66 euros to 152.62 euros, which translates to an additional 19.96 euros per month.
– One of the biggest concerns for consumer associations lies in the billing method. Electricity and gas companies apply the tax rates in effect at the time the bill is issued, not when the consumption occurs. This means that any bill that arrives to users from today, June 1st, will include a VAT of 21% , retroactively affecting all energy consumed during the month of May, even though the legal tax rate during that period was 10%. The PP accuses Sánchez of launching “an offensive against the very foundations of Spain” and criticizes Puente for speaking of a “coup d’état”: {Trans, summary}
– The Secretary General of the PP in Madrid, Alfonso Serrano {pic}, has criticized the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, for launching “an offensive against the foundations of the State to cover up his corruption,” which he has labelled a “danger to democracy.” This was stated during an event in Aranjuez alongside the town’s mayor, Miguel Gómez Herrero, where he criticized Sánchez for having “made the decision to launch an offensive against judges, prosecutors, police officers and journalists, all in order to save his own corruption and jeopardize the foundations of our state.”
**Criticism of Puente for casting “suspicions” against the PP**
– The PP’s Deputy Secretary for Sectoral Coordination, Alma Ezcurra {pic}, also spoke to the press this Sunday, highlighting during a visit to the Madrid town of Parla that the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has raised “suspicions” that the PP has “privileged information” and that a “coup d’état” is taking place in Spain. “I wish that minister and those members of the Socialist Party strength. They are in the second phase of grief. First comes denial, then anger, and the last of all will be acceptance. The sooner they accept it, the better it will be for everyone,” Ezcurra stated.
– She also had words for the Minister of Justice, Félix Bolaños, saying that “he seems to think his ministry is the PSOE’s communications department, and he’s mistaken.” The deputy secretary stated that the PP’s opinion is “that everyone who commits a crime must pay for it, that trials must be fair, and that the judges and courts of this country should not be attacked.” In this regard, she stated that “no one should do it, but particularly not the government.”
– Ezcurra also addressed the possibility of a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister, clarifying that this would have to be answered by “Pedro Sánchez’s investiture partners, who are the ones who brought him to power and who can remove him.” Source, Spanish: https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/pp-acusa-sanchez-iniciar-una-ofensiva-contra-los-cimientos-estado-afea-que-puente-hable-golpe-estado_6977292_0.html
ANDALUCÍA
Economic Situation Not As Rosey As Junta President Juanma Moreno Claims– The wage gap between Andalusia and the rest of Spain reaches its highest point ever at 11.68%: {Trans, summary}
– The PP’s management of the Andalusian Regional Government is based on the narrative of the “Andalusian economic miracle.” According to the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, who will soon begin his campaign for reelection, Andalusia is “the region that has created the most jobs,” and his “stability” is resulting in “better working conditions.”
– However, the unemployment rate in Andalusia remains among the highest in Spain at 14.7%, compared to the national average of 10.83% during the first quarter of 2026. In terms of quality, the latest Annual Wage Structure Survey published by the INE at the end of May, which includes data from 2024, shows that far from decreasing, the wage gap between Andalusia and the Spanish average has reached its historical maximum: 11.68%. AXARQUÍA
The terral wind arrives this Tuesday in the Axarquía region with temperatures that could reach 39 degrees: {Trans, summary}
– AEMET has issued a yellow weather warning for the Axarquía region this Tuesday, June 2nd, due to maximum temperatures of 37C although “temperatures could reach 39C,” according to the meteorological agency. The warning will be in effect from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM .
– The highest temperature in the region is expected in La Viñuela, with a forecast high of 39C, followed by Benamargosa, with 38C. Additionally, 37C are expected in Vélez-Málaga, Benamocarra, Canillas de Aceituno, Almáchar, El Borge, Alcaucín, and Totalán; 36C in Rincón de la Victoria, Algarrobo, Periana, Iznate, and Riogordo; 35C in Comares and Canillas de Albaida; and 34C in Cómpeta and Colmenar. The heat will be somewhat more bearable in parts of the eastern and far north of the Axarquía region, with highs of 33C in Torrox and Frigiliana; 32C in Nerja; and 31C in Alfarnate.
– On Wednesday, the hot, dry wind known as the terral, is expected to dissipate in the Axarquía region as sea breezes arrive, bringing a drop in temperatures. Maximum temperatures of between 28 and 31 degrees Celsius are forecast for much of the area, with minimum temperatures between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius.
– Temperatures could rise again on Thursday due to a renewed influx of northwesterly winds, although they are not expected to reach the highs forecast for Tuesday.

MALAGA PROVINCE
Adding Insult To Injury– The three year backlog for disability assessments in Malaga continues: {Trans, summary}
– The backlog at the disability assessment centre in Malaga continues, much to the despair of users, many of whom see their cases delayed for more than three years. Those affected insist that these delays cause them to “lose rights,” blocking access to everything from aid and benefits to certain tax breaks, scholarships, job opportunities, and even reserved parking spaces.
– The problem is not new, but far from improving, it is getting worse. In fact, sources close to the assessment centre, consulted by this newspaper, warned that the waiting list “is growing.” That said, some cases are given priority, particularly the most serious ones, such as those related to stroke, cancer, or ALS, as well as cases involving minors. But, in general, De Pablos laments that “Malaga is the worst offender in all of Andalusia.” “The data we have shows an average of three years, with some cases even longer,” he states, adding that in the rest of the region it averages around two years. It should be noted that the law sets the maximum time limit at six months. Source, Spanish: https://www.malagahoy.es/malaga/atasco-tres-anos-valoracion-discapacidad-malaga_0_2006892868.html
TORROX
“Stiffing the band” – The PSOE of Torrox demands that the mayor Óscar Medina and the councilor for Culture Salvador Escudero pay the cultural groups that have not been paid for two years: {Trans, summary}
– The spokesperson for the Socialist Municipal Group in the Torrox City Council, Mari Nieves Ramírez , has demanded an immediate solution from the Popular Party government team for the cultural groups of the municipality who, according to her complaint, have gone nearly two years without receiving the revenue corresponding to the sale of tickets for the performances held in the Villa de Torrox Theater.
– “We are talking about residents who dedicate time, effort, and enthusiasm to preparing shows that enrich the cultural life of Torrox. They met all the requirements demanded by the City Council to produce events at the Villa de Torrox Theater, they sold their tickets, and yet, two years later, they still haven’t received the money they are owed,” denounced the Socialist spokesperson.
– For Ramírez, this problem reflects a lack of commitment from the local government to Torrox’s cultural associations. “We have a government that likes to be in the spotlight when everything is running smoothly, but when difficulties arise, it turns its back on those who need support and doesn’t seek solutions,” she criticized. VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA
Vélez-Málaga will assume the 40% increase in water charges so that the residents do not see it in their bill, community funds will pay it: {Trans, summary}
– The Vélez-Málaga City Council is going to take over in full the 40% increase in the price of water is high to prevent it from reaching the resident’s pockets directly. The measure will involve a municipal economic contribution of approximately 3.5 million euros. The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez (PP), has announced this decision and explains that the measure seeks to offer stability and protect families in the face of rising service costs. ALMUÑÉCAR
The PSOE denounces the “chaos” of the new market- power outages, broken elevators and lack of ventilation: {Trans, summary}
– Only a few months after its long-awaited opening, Almuñécar’s new Municipal Market is facing growing criticism over a series of operational problems that traders say are affecting business and customer access.
– Despite costing more than €7 million and taking six years to complete, the market is reportedly struggling with inadequate electrical capacity. According to local Socialist representatives, repeated power cuts and overloaded circuits have disrupted daily trading, affected food refrigeration systems and even prevented some hospitality businesses from opening. At least one restaurant remains unable to begin operations because the building’s electrical infrastructure cannot support its equipment.
– Concerns intensified after a power outage lasting almost 30 minutes reportedly disrupted trading at the market, particularly for fishmongers and other fresh food vendors. Traders claim the electrical system lacks the capacity needed to operate refrigeration units, kitchen equipment and air-conditioning systems at the same time.
– Other complaints focus on poor ventilation and cooling inside the building. Flower stall operators reportedly have to remove their stock each day to prevent heat damage, raising questions about the suitability of the market’s environmental controls.
– Accessibility has also become a source of concern. Critics point to lift failures, the absence of toilets on the main trading level and previously reported issues with external access and stair safety.
– Opposition councillors are calling for urgent action to address the building’s electrical, ventilation and accessibility shortcomings, arguing that a major public investment should not be suffering from such fundamental operational problems so soon after opening. MIDDLE EAST
Iran halts negotiations with the US over Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, according to Iranian media; US claims Israel will stop advancing in Lebanon:
{Trans, summary}
– The Iranian negotiating team confirmed on Monday its decision to suspend communication with the US administration through Pakistani mediation, further jeopardizing the ceasefire agreement in the region- which seemed imminent last week. According to state media, the reason is the intensification of the Israeli offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, where IDF troops continue their ground advance, and specifically the imminent air campaign against the Shiite militia’s stronghold south of Beirut.
– Hours earlier, the Speaker of Parliament and leader of the Iranian negotiating team, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, directly blamed the US for the breakdown of the ceasefire, both for maintaining the blockade of Iranian ports and for failing to prevent the intensification of its Israeli ally’s campaign against the most powerful and best-equipped pro-Iranian forces in the Middle East, on Lebanese soil.
– However, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had said that the exchange of messages with Washington was ongoing, and President Trump asserted that he was close to “a very good deal” with Tehran.
– Furthermore, the US wrote today on social media that it had “a very productive call with Prime Minister ‘Bibi’ Netanyahu of Israel and that no troops will be going to Beirut, and the troops that were en route are already returning.” It also stated that it had a telephone conversation “with Hezbollah” and that “they have agreed to stop firing.” “Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel.” Source, Spanish: https://www.larazon.es/internacional/iran-paraliza-negociaciones-ataques-israel-libano-segun-medio-irani_202606016a1d8dbc91bae05c35ea55ee.html & Video Link

Neither the National Security Council, nor the Attorney General’s Office can protect their most sensitive data from a teenage hacker, yet you are supposed to trust them with your data? SNAFU!: {Trans, summary}
– The National Police arrested a person last week in the province of Granada for an alleged crime of revealing secrets for the massive leak of personal data of members of sensitive State institutions. The detainee is a minor and of Spanish nationality, according to sources of the investigation consulted by Europa Press.
– The alleged hacker published personal data on various Internet portals relating to members of different sensitive State institutions, including the INCIBE, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the National Security Council, as well as members of the National Police, the Civil Guard, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Finance and the Tax Agency.
– The operation is still open with the aim of clarifying the possible involvement of other people and completely dismantling the network of profiles involved in this campaign of accusations and threats. HEALTH
The data that Mónica García is hiding about healthcare and immigrants– The Ministry of Health has presented a report that falsely claims to demonstrate that immigrants “use healthcare less” and are “healthier”: {Trans, summary}
– Mónica García presented data intended to show that migrants use Spain’s healthcare system less than Spanish-born residents and are generally healthier. Her optimistic view runs counter to the facts.
– Overall healthcare usage is almost identical. During the previous year, 92.3% of Spaniards and 90.6% of foreigners used some form of healthcare service. Foreign-born residents showed greater dependence on the public system, with 61.5% relying exclusively on public healthcare compared with 59.3% of Spaniards. They also recorded higher use of some of the most expensive services: public hospital admissions stood at 10.5% among foreigners versus 9.2% among Spaniards, while public emergency department attendance was 43.3% versus 37.2%. Among Latin Americans these figures rose to 11.3% and 44.7% respectively.
– The data therefore present a more complex picture than the minister’s headline claims. While Spaniards make greater use of primary care, consume more medicines and suffer more chronic illnesses, foreigners make greater use of emergency departments and hospital admissions and depend more heavily on public healthcare. The presentation emphasised statistics supporting lower migrant healthcare consumption while giving little attention to figures showing higher use of costly hospital and emergency services.

The SAS leaves almost nine out of ten contracts uncovered for family doctors who finish their residency; only 17% of all positions filled: {Trans, summary}
– Family Medicine continues to be the great victim in the Andalusian public health system. The Andalusian Health Service (SAS) has offered 1,097 contracts for new specialists in Family and Community Medicine – doctors who have just finished their residency – within the single regional act promoted by the Junta de Andalucía to facilitate their immediate incorporation. However, the first provisional allocation, a document to which El Correo de Andalucía has had access, has only covered 145 places, barely 13% of the total. In other words: almost nine out of ten contracts have been left vacant in the speciality that the Administration itself and the unions place among the most stressed due to the lack of professionals.
– This Monday, after the provisional publication of the awards, the UGT Andalusia union released a statement denouncing that only 17% of the places in all positions had been filled in the first call. Of the total number of places offered, 1,715, the SAS has only managed to allocate 286.
– “The positions are not being filled because the conditions are not attractive for younger doctors, they want to work in better circumstances and without doing so many on-call shifts,” the delegate of Health of UGT Andalusia, Antonio Macías, told this newspaper. The lack of coverage of places has not only occurred in Family and Community Medicine, but in all specialities. The unions see these figures as a clear warning: neither the need for care nor the volume of places offered are enough to attract new specialists if the wages and working conditions are not competitive.
