Brexit Hotline

The Spanish government has a hotline to answer all queries from Brits living in Spain about the implications of Brexit, in English. Callers can ring 060 when in Spain or +34 902 887060 if calling from abroad and an automated system will offer the choice of either Spanish or English.
You will then be offered a choice of information on the different issues.
The service also offers the option of speaking to an operator for those requiring further information or with a specific query not dealt with by the automated options. Source: https://www.thelocal.es/20200218/spain-launches-dedicated-brexit-hotline

EU delays decision on border reopening: The EU cannot agree on a list of “safe countries” from where travellers could visit Europe in July, with some member states requiring more time to decide, diplomats said Saturday.
After days of talks, EU envoys on Friday agreed to propose a list of 14 countries to their national governments, with the United States, where the coronavirus is still spreading, to remain excluded. The proposed “safe” list contains just fourteen countries: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay.
“There is no visibility on where this will go, but the presidency still hopes to put this matter to a vote on Monday,” the source added. Source: https://news.yahoo.com/eu-delays-decision-border-reopening-215710221.html?

Microsoft Is Closing All It’s Retail Stores Permanently Due to COVID-19: The memo announcing the change is long on PR-speak, short on actual information. We are told, for example, that “As we look forward, we start a new chapter for Microsoft Store,” and “As part of our business plan, we announced a strategic change in our retail operations,” — a strategic change, you say? How delightful! — “including closing Microsoft Store physical locations.” ?!? This seems less like a strategic change and more like “quitting the retail business.” Ah well. What can you expect from a company statement released primarily on LinkedIn? Tennis News- Davis Cup and Fed Cup postponed until 2021: Neither postponement has come as a surprise, particularly following the chaos caused by the Adria Tour event earlier this month.
Due to be hosted in Madrid, the Davis Cup Finals were supposed to have taken place from November 23-29. With the competition now set to begin on November 22, 2021, it was confirmed the 18 teams that have already qualified for the men’s global team tournament will have their places secured, while the draw for the finals remains the same.
The women’s equivalent, the Fed Cup, has also unsurprisingly hit a similar stumbling block and will now take place from April 13-18. Budapest remains its location and, much like the Davis Cup, the teams that have already qualified will retain their places. The Fed Cup Play-offs will go ahead at the start of February. Frankenstein the Show: A circus and theatre are merged with a touch of dark humour, backed by live music. June 26 to 28 at the Congress Centre in Granada with performances at 6pm and 9.30pm each night.
With this show we expand the concept of the so-called New Circus, reinforcing the plot and the “Theme of Horror”. We made a fun and rogue, but at the same time emotional, version of Mary Shelley’s magnificent work “Frankenstein” or “The Modern Prometheus”. A different way of telling this well-known story through Humor and Acrobatics.
We will transfer the spectator to a fantastic world from the same entrance door of the theater / venue and we will make him forget everything during the two hours of entertainment that our “Show” offers. A stage proposal where the most intense moments of the original novel and the funniest of the versions that have been seen throughout all these years in cinema and theaters are mixed, all wrapped in a fantasy aesthetic inspired by the wonderful mind from the filmmaker “Tim Burton”.

Free photo tutorials: During lockdown I came across an old memory stick holding tutorials from photography workshops I used to run in Ireland. I had the idea -and the time – to adapt them for anyone who’d like to improve their photography. Rather than post them to Facebook where things tend to disappear, I started adding them, last night, to a blog on my website with each post appearing as a link on my Facebook Page.
I don’t know if anyone out there is interested, but it’s free, so why not? They can be accessed through the Photography Tutorials tab at https://georgemunday.art/ or via my Facebook Page at FB link

Computers are getting more expensive, and here’s why: The world-wide personal computer industry saw another quarterly decline in sales during the second quarter, as price hikes caused by memory chip scarcity scared some consumers away. While companies could not raise prices too quickly on computers sold to businesses, especially at large enterprises where contracts lock in prices, consumers are reportedly seeing higher price tags.
Some companies are also adding less memory, stripping down the specifications of the system and instead installing smaller amounts of DRAM at prices that would have covered larger memory modules in the past.
At a meeting in February, an executive at chip giant Intel Corp. showed a slide indicating that average selling prices for PCs have climbed steadily since 2014. The recent move appears more significant. “Vendors raise the price for both new and existing models,” she said. “For instance, a model A used to be $500, but the same model A with same configuration is now $550.” (Also, all computers are in short supply, most popular models on Amazon are sold out and cannot restock due to COVID-19 interrupting delivery routes. -Ed.) Experts warn against relaxing safety measures as coronavirus outbreaks spread in Spain: The country recorded its highest number of new daily infections in three weeks, and there is concern an increasingly cavalier attitude towards the pandemic could lead to a second wave. The report from the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday showed the highest number of new daily infections in three weeks: 196, without taking into account the figures from Castilla-La Mancha, which could not be added due to technical problems. One has to go back to June 3 to find a worse number: 219. And in Andalusia, authorities are investigating two potential outbreaks in Granada and Huelva. Officials have reported five active clusters across the southern region. UPDATE- Which airlines have scheduled flights from the UK to Spain from July?: Since Spain brought forward the date of the opening of the country’s borders to EU tourists to June 21st (instead of the initially set date of July 1st), airlines have announced changes to their summer flight schedules. Social Security in Spain Agrees to Extend Aid for Freelances Past June 30: According to sources close to the negotiators, the extension of this benefit, which equates to around 70 per cent of the regulatory base (around €661 for those contributing the minimum base) will be available for an additional three months, until September 30. Spain’s ombudsman slams airlines for still not reimbursing passengers for cancelled flights: In their letter to the government, Spain’s national ombudsman explains how they’ve received “numerous complaints” from disgruntled passengers who say airlines’ “websites have been set up in such a way that it’s impossible to apply for a money refund”. Other airlines are offering airmiles and other vouchers that don’t cover the cost of the flight as well as carrying out “numerous” other illicit practices, the letter signed by head ombudsman Francisco Fernández Marugán states. ‘The money’s gone’- Wirecard collapses owing $4 billion: Wirecard, a German payment processor and financial services provider collapsed on Thursday owing creditors almost $4 billion after disclosing a gaping hole in its books that its auditor EY said was the result of a sophisticated global fraud. Creditors have scant hope of getting back the 3.5 billion euros they are owed, sources familiar with the matter said. Of that total, Wirecard has borrowed 1.75 billion from 15 banks and issued 500 million in bonds.
“The money’s gone,” said one banker. “We may recoup a few euros in a couple of years but will write off the loan now.” Full story: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-wirecard-accounts/the-moneys-gone-wirecard-collapses-owing-4-billion-idUSKBN23W176

Political Correctness Foolishness: Unilever to drop terms like ‘whitening’ from beauty products. Consumer products giant Unilever said Thursday it is aiming for a “more inclusive vision of beauty” in its skin care products and will remove words such as “fair,” “whitening” and “lightening” from its products, a move that comes amid intense global debate about race. (What about teeth-whitening toothpaste, another Unilever product? Is “whitening” or even “lightening” your teeth now considered racist? I don’t imagine “teeth un-yellowing” toothpaste would be any more acceptable. What the heck are you supposed to call it? -Ed.) Full story: https://apnews.com/f251355cc76e208c9d0e514dfb9c0a0d

Microsoft Confirms June Windows 10 Update Could Trigger Reboots – No Fix Available Right Now: This month’s Patch Tuesday Windows 10 update has managed to bring in quite a few issues, including some that have now been acknowledged by Microsoft. After releasing an out-of-band fix for the printing issue, the Windows maker has now confirmed that some users might experience crashes due to a failure in the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) file, lsass.exe.
The Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) file (lsass.exe) might fail on some devices with the error message, “A critical system process, C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000008. The machine must now be restarted.”
Microsoft hasn’t shared any workaround, but added that it is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. Source: https://wccftech.com/microsoft-confirms-june-windows-10-update-could-crash-systems/

Malwarebytes Blamed for Windows 10 v2004 Update Reports of Massive Performance Issues And Crashes: The complaints can be found in numerous reports in the Malwarebytes support forums since the release of Windows 10 version 2004. These issues range from general slowness, video stuttering, blue screen of death (BSOD) crashes to frozen systems where Windows 10 stops responding. As it turns out, however, the problem is with the installed Malwarebytes version 4.1.
The problem was solved by disabling the “Ransomware Protection” function of Malwarebytes. Therefore, there is already beta version 4.1.1.71, which corrects the error or in which the error does not appear. The beta can be obtained via the settings. To do this, select Settings> General> Beta updates and set the slider to activate there. Then you search for a new version. When the beta is displayed, you install it.

Safe form of ultraviolet light kills airborne coronavirus: Ceiling fixtures emitting a safe form of ultraviolet light called far-UVC would be very efficient at killing airborne coronaviruses, according to a study by researchers at Columbia University. “A very low exposure to far-UVC light killed well over 99.9% of the exposed virus,” lead researcher Dr. David Brenner told Reuters.
The idea would be to install overhead far-UVC lights in public locations, where they would be “continuously killing microbes, including the COVID-19 virus – and so limiting the spread of the virus,” Brenner said, adding that far-UVC manufacturers are already ramping up production. “We don’t see far-UVC light as an alternative to masks and social distancing,” Brenner said. “We see it as a new extra weapon that we can use in the battle against COVID-19.”

House painting: Our house is desperately overdue for painting. It is quite large, we have white rendered wall, metal rejas and concrete balustrades on the main house, then rendered walls, railing and balustrades round the terraces. We are hoping to get an agreement to start the work when the hottest part of the summer is over.
Can anyone make a recommendation? Margaret , Benajrafe

Can tenants ask for a monthly rent reduction if the community pool is not opened?: {DISCLAIMER- THIS IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE, ALWAYS CONSULT A LAWYER FOR LEGAL ADVICE.} The OCU Consumer Organization has produced a guide with practical information for both owners and tenants affected by this decision.
In the case of tenants, if the use of the pool is contemplated in the rental, the inability to access it could be considered a partial breach of the lease. Although it is true that the lessee is obliged to bear the decision to close the pool, it is no less so that, when the closure responds to a Community decision based on economic reasons, he can request compensation from the lessor for the unavailability of that element, affect from the OCU.
In this situation, the OCU recommends that an agreement be reached between the parties and adds that it considers “adjusted by law that the landlord agrees to a temporary reduction of the rent to his tenant” due to the lack of availability of the pool. Also, if the pool is to remain closed, the owner will have a cost savings that will facilitate the agreement.
In case of dispute the final decision would always be in the hands of a judge. Although, OCU does not advise in any case to go to a judicial process for this reason. Instead, it is recommended that the parties reach an agreement, which may consist of lowering the rent or other compensation. As a basis for that agreement, the Organization considers that, by analogy, article 22 of the Urban Leasing Law would apply, which provides compensation for works in the leased home that prevent the tenant from using part of the property, since there is a sudden unavailability of one of the elements included in the rental contract, due to a decision by the Community of owners.
As a guideline, OCU calculates that the rent reduction could be agreed between 10% and 20% during the months of regular use of the pool in which it will be unavailable.

OnLine Stores “FormJacked”: Researchers reported on Monday that hackers are now exploiting Google’s Analytics service to stealthily pilfer credit card information from infected e-commerce sites (online stores).
According to several independent reports from PerimeterX, Kaspersky, and Sansec, threat actors are now injecting data-stealing code on the compromised websites in combination with tracking code generated by Google Analytics for their own account, letting them exfiltrate payment information entered by users even in conditions where content security policies are enforced for maximum web security.
As a customer, unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do to safeguard yourself from formjacking attacks. But it’s essential that you watch out for any instances of unauthorized purchases or identity theft. Full details: https://thehackernews.com/2020/06/google-analytics-hacking.html

Pre-planning your funeral is a thoughtful and responsible way to show you care about your family.
Funerals are no easy task. There are numerous considerations to factor in, including logistics, food and drink, casket purchase and burial grounds. A loved one’s death brings immense emotional strain to any family, and the question of financing and arrangements only exacerbates the stress.

Vetiver Spain in Sayalonga
Are you having soil erosion issues after all the recent rain?
Vetiver is the perfect solution with the 3 – 4 metre root system.
The plant is non invasive, grows rapidly and once established it needs very little water.
We are finally open again for business. We are still not permitted to have visitors at our nursery but we can ship plants via post or we can deliver locally.
Our first day of shipping was Monday and we shipped 2,000 plants to various locations in Spain, Portugal, and Hungary.
We have plenty of Vetiver in stock. Right now the soil is nice and damp and the weather is starting to heat up so it is the perfect time to plant.
We also have Lemon Grass, Moringa Seedlings and Organic Moringa Powder.
Moringa, also known as the “Miracle Tree”, has many nutritional and health benefits. If you have ever been to a Thai Restaurant you have probably had Lemon Grass.
Lemon Grass grows easily and quickly. Take a look at our website or go directly to the two links below. If you have any questions please contact us either by email or phone.

Recommendations & Requests

Gardener: Recommendation for Conrad de Susa (and SPW Construction). My wife and I have been living near Competa for nearly six years and before finding SPW on Digamextra, we went through umpteen so-called builders. The same thing occurred in our long search for a real gardener. Again, thanks to an ad we published in digamextra about a month ago, we had gone through at least five so-called gardeners. The ad produced 4 phone calls and from them, we chose an Englishman named Conrad. He is a professional gardener, as he has a degree in horticulture. As I am handicapped, I can’t do much to help my wife, and the garden, which we both love so much, is no exception. Within a month, Conrad has literally transformed it into a small paradise. The first day, he went around the garden to have a first look, and he named off all the plants, flowers and trees that had managed to ”survive” until then. He came up with original ideas, installed an irrigation system, and provided my wife with invaluable information to help her manage the garden in his absence. We even have tomatoes and French beans popping their little leaves up from under the soil. He provided original, safe, and amazingly cheap solutions to get rid of those pesty insects and ants that were invading and killing off so many plants. We are weed-free as well. In addition, Conrad has helped with our swimming pool and done odd jobs around the house that I can no longer accomplish.
So, if you are looking for a real gardener, we highly recommend Conrad. He lives in the Archez/Competa area, but can travel to others. He can be reached on: 622396579.
Kind regards from Paul in Competa. puchkauzon1 At gmail d0t com

Squealing water heater, solution needed: We live in a small community and have an electric water heater that squeals almost continually. We have had an electrician and two plumbers out, and even when we unplug it the squealing continues. Much worse in the warmer weather. The plumbers told us it is the community pump causing the problem, I’ve been to the administrator who denies this. Help Please!
Thankyou, Valerie. El. Morche.

Saudi to allow only approximately 1,000 pilgrims to perform hajj: Saudi Arabia announced on Monday it would hold a “very limited” hajj this year, as it moves to curb the biggest coronavirus outbreak in the Gulf. The decision marks the first time in Saudi Arabia’s modern history that Muslims outside the kingdom have been barred from performing the hajj, which last year drew 2.5 million pilgrims. Saudi Arabia will allow around 1,000 pilgrims residing in the kingdom to perform the hajj this year, a minister said Tuesday, after it announced the ritual would be scaled back due to coronavirus. CANCELLED Due to Covid-19,  Noche de San Juan 2020. It’s normally celebrated on June 23rd, St. John’s Eve and the day of the summer solstice.
The delegate of the Junta de Andalucia in Malaga, Patricia Navarro, has asked residents on the Costa del Sol to be prudent and responsible this Tuesday on San Juan.
All official celebrations of San Juan have been cancelled; undoubtedly, some residents will try to go to the beach to carry on with their traditions. Navarro insists that this year San Juan will be “atypical” because “the recommendations on behalf of the Junta made to all the municipalities is that all parties and activities be suspended.”
Not only will these activities be suspended, but most likely, municipalities will prohibit people on the beach past their closing times. Source: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2020/06/22/costa-del-sol-asks-residents-in-malaga-to-be-prudent-and-responsible-on-this-san-juan/

Missing Any Chrome Browser Extensions? This may explain it: Google recently removed 106 more extensions from its Chrome Web Store after they were found illegally collecting sensitive user data. The extensions in question posed as utilities offering capabilities to convert files from one format to the other, among other tools for secure browsing, while relying on thousands of fake reviews to trick unsuspecting users into installing them. The search giant, in response to the disclosures, has deactivated the problematic browser extensions.

Apple switches to its own chips for Mac computers as it adds features, privacy controls: This brings the Mac into line with the company’s iPhone and iPads, which already use Apple-designed chips. The move will give software developers for Apple’s largest pool of third-party apps – those built for iPhones and iPads – new access to its laptops and desktop for the first time. As with previous Macs, the new Apple-chipped machines will remain able to download software from outside Apple’s official app stores, in contrast to iPhones and iPads, which for the most part can only run software from Apple’s stores. ‘Astonishing’ giant circle of pits found near Stonehenge: The circle of pits is significantly larger than any comparable prehistoric monument in Britain. Researchers have found 20 shafts, but estimate there may have been more than 30 originally. Each one is about 5 metres deep and 10 metres across.
The new discovery shows a 2-km (1.2-mile) wide circle of shafts surrounding a settlement at Durrington Walls, which also included a henge, or circular structure, made of timber posts. The site is located about 3.2 km northeast of Stonehenge and evidence suggests the pits date back to the same period, some 4,500 years ago.

Arrivals from the UK into Spain will not have to quarantine: Those arriving from the UK from Sunday will not have to isolate but will have to pass through the three health checkpoints announced on Friday. The first includes filling in a form stating whether the individual has had coronavirus, as well as where to find them during their time in Spain; the second involves a temperature check; and the third is a visual inspection. If the results of one or more of these checks is unsatisfactory, the individual will be examined by a doctor. European borders are reopening, but there is a lot of small print to digest: Travelers from EU and Schengen countries can enter Spain once more, but there are still a number of limits to free movement.
From today, residents of Spain can travel to Sweden, located in the opposite extreme of Europe, but not Portugal, its neighbor, which will be keeping its borders closed to Spain and Italy until July 1.
Another country that borders Spain, France, will not reopen its borders until midnight tonight. Citizens from the United Kingdom, which has officially left the EU but is still covered by a transition agreement until December that grants it full rights as a member state, can enter Spain. But anyone taking the opposite journey will have to quarantine for two weeks on arrival in the UK, a measure that will be in place at least until June 29, despite Spain having opted not to impose a reciprocal measure on UK arrivals.
Another exception to the opening of borders for Schengen countries is Denmark, which will keep border controls in place for the majority of its fellow members – including Spain – until June 27.
While there are already a number of exceptions in Europe, the rules for non-EU and non-Schengen countries are yet to be defined at all. Spain is counting on the 27-member bloc to agree on a list of safe countries, with scaled entry dates according to the epidemiological situation in each one. Will coronavirus spell the end for Spain’s flamenco clubs?: These clubs, which offer intimate shows with a handful of artists — dancers, singers, guitarists, the cajon (box drum) players and the rhythmic clappers — in smaller spaces will find it difficult to adapt to new social distancing norms.
In a bid to save the sector, ANTFES has been lobbying the government to extend its furlough scheme for tablaos until the year’s end and for subsidies to cover the lack of tourists under a campaign called “Flamenco in danger of extinction”.
It is also asking the government to drop its capacity restrictions that are aimed at avoiding any new outbreak — or “95 percent of tablaos will have to close”.
So far, the flamenco sector says it has had no response from the government of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez who has already extended help to cultural venues such as museums, cinemas and opera houses. Full story:

Tour Operator TUI Drops Holiday Bombshell- No “Air Bridges”- No Flights: Customers face having their travel plans cancelled after the tour operator announced it will only fly holidaymakers to destinations that don’t have quarantine measures in place. This latest update means existing bookings are at risk of being scrapped if “air bridges” aren’t set up in time, while those who’ve yet to book their next getaway will have fewer destinations to choose from. Coronavirus dampens Stonehenge solstice celebrations: The coronavirus pandemic has prevented druids, pagans and party-goers from watching the sun rise at Stonehenge to mark the summer solstice this year as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.
English Heritage, the body that oversees Stonehenge, livestreamed the sunrise instead. It said more than 3.6 million people watched as dawn broke at 4:52 a.m. Sunday. Source: https://apnews.com/d7ececec4c8391b3aee4803a91117056

Have Apple And Google Suddenly Uploaded A COVID-19 Tracking App To Your Phone? The Facts Behind The Furor: Social media is buzzing with complaints from people after apparently discovering that Apple or Google has suddenly uploaded a COVID-19 tracking app to their phone without permission. Here’s what actually happened.
If you have opened up your Facebook or Twitter apps only to be bombarded by messages from people warning that Apple or Google has suddenly and stealthily installed a COVID-19 tracking app to their phone, and you should check yours, then you are not alone.
I’m sorry to disappoint those readers looking forward to a good old rant about the state violating their right to privacy or expecting fuel to feed another conspiracy theory fire. Neither Apple nor Google have uploaded an app to your smartphone without your permission; no stealthy and automatic tracking app installation has taken place.
Yes, there is now an entry at the top of the Google settings on my Android smartphone, for example, that states: “COVID-19 exposure notifications.”
No, that does not mean an app has been installed. Indeed, if I were to click on that entry, it would take me to a screen that tells me I have to install or finish setting up a participating app to activate the exposure notifications.
So, what has been installed? This is a case of nothing to see here as all that’s happened in the last Android or iOS update is that the application programming interface (API) that will enable exposure notifications to work has been added. It’s not an app; it’s the framework within the operating system that will allow such an app to function once it becomes available and if you decide to install it.
Apple and Google published a joint statement about this back on May 20. “What we’ve built is not an app – rather public health agencies will incorporate the API into their own apps that people install. Our technology is designed to make these apps work better.”
To sum up, then: nobody can or will install a COVID-19 tracking app on your phone but you. At that point, you will have to agree to the various permissions the application requires to work effectively. As you were, nothing to see here.
