SPAIN

Spanish parliament again rejects a proposal to reduce the voting age to sixteen: The measure would have benefited 999,977 people aged 16 and 17, according to figures from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics, which would be just over 2% of the electorate. This is the third time such a proposal has been made; the others were turned down in 2016 and 2020. The idea had the support of Unidas Podemos, Más País and EH Bildu, while the PP, PSOE, Ciudadanos, PNV and Vox voted against. EUROPE

Russia set to annex parts of Ukraine on Friday at the Kremlin:
– The annexation would come just days after voters supposedly approved Moscow-managed “referendums” that Ukrainian and Western officials have denounced as illegal, forced and rigged.
– Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Thursday that four regions of Ukraine – Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – would be folded into Russia during a Kremlin ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin, who is expected to give a major speech. Peskov said the regions’ pro-Moscow administrators would sign treaties to join Russia in the Kremlin’s ornate St. George’s Hall.

Another Reason to Quit Fakebook- Amnesty International says Meta’s algorithms “proactively amplified and promoted content” on Facebook, which incited violent hatred against the Rohingya beginning as early as 2012:
(Previous articles have covered Facebook’s involvement with child trafficking, drug sales and it’s lies about how it shares your data. FB has literally been fined billions of dollars by the EU in the past year for just a few of these abuses, but still they carry on, fines are just a business expense to them. -Ed.)
– Rohingya seek reparations from Facebook for role in massacre.
– For years, Facebook, now called Meta Platforms Inc., pushed the narrative that it was a neutral platform in Myanmar that was misused by malicious people, and that despite its efforts to remove violent and hateful material, it unfortunately fell short. That narrative echoes its response to the role it has played in other conflicts around the world, whether the 2020 election in the U.S. or hate speech in India.
– But a new and comprehensive report by Amnesty International states that Facebook’s preferred narrative is false. Despite years of warnings, Amnesty found, the company not only failed to remove violent hate speech and disinformation against the Rohingya, it actively spread and amplified it until it culminated in the 2017 massacre.
– “Meta – through its dangerous algorithms and its relentless pursuit of profit – substantially contributed to the serious human rights violations perpetrated against the Rohingya,” the report says. Why food intolerance tests fail to deliver on their promises:
– There is a whole industry making money off home kits that do not provide an accurate diagnosis of the causes behind people’s gut issues.
– These tests, which are sold for prices that range between €100 and €200, supposedly identify foods to which our body is especially sensitive and may be causing us gut problems. Some simply require taking a hair or blood sample at home, by pricking a finger, and then sending it to a laboratory for analysis.
– Montserrat Fernández Rivas, head of the Allergy service at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid, warns that “there is no scientific evidence” to back up these food intolerance tests. “Food sensitivity is not a diagnosis, it is an invention; a concept that gained traction among the general population, especially among those with chronic digestive discomfort due to functional disorders of the intestine. And some opportunists are doing business with it,” she explains. According to this expert, the results of these tests “have no relation to food tolerance.” Full article: https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2022-09-27/why-food-intolerance-tests-fail-to-deliver-on-their-promises.html

SPAIN

Spanish government plans to charge tolls on every motorway in the country from 2024: The measure is partly to encourage people to use other, more sustainable, forms of transport and is also considered fairer as the burden of maintaining the roads will not fall on all taxpayers. Full article: https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/spanish-government-plans-20220927175517-nt.html
(This is all part of the digital revolution in Spain. These tool booths will collect and monitor all travel data of every vehicle. The gov’t will log everywhere you drive to, and when you did so. They will also monitor the time it takes you to travel between toll booths, and if you have been speeding, a fine will be automatically sent to you. If you have outstanding unpaid fines/taxes you could be blocked from passing the toll booth. All this data will be stored on “cloud” servers, which are not secure. The data may as well be public. You will start receiving internet ads based on your driving habits! Digital tyranny on the march! -Ed.)

Díaz rebukes the PSOE for its anti-squatting amendment and says that squatting is not a problem: {Translation}
– The second vice-president of the government, Yolanda Díaz, has criticised the PSOE’s amendment to encourage the eviction of squatters within 48 hours, considering that this “is not a national problem” when tackling rising rents and mortgages is.
– Moreover, she warned her coalition partner to be careful with this type of approach, given that taking on the “right-wing agenda” from the progressive sphere leads to cases such as the Italian elections, with the victory of the leader of the Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni.
– In this way, she joins the reproaches of Unidas Podemos, which, through its deputy Rafa Mayoral, has lashed out against the anti-occupation amendment in the draft organic law on organisational efficiency of the public service of justice, defended by the socialist spokesman in Congress, Patxi López.
– In an interview on TVE, the Minister of Employment regretted that the PSOE now has an “urgency” in wanting to tackle this phenomenon “summarily” in 48 hours, comparing, for example, that trials for dismissal claims, which deal with something essential for a worker such as income, take, with luck, around two years.
– “The squatting that (Patxi López) talks about is not a problem for the country (…) Believe me, it is not a problem”, Díaz said, stressing that it is necessary to govern with “rigour” and to analyse the data to see how many legal actions in Spain are derived from this matter.
– In this way, she criticised the fact that this is what is being talked about and not the new housing law that should be passed, given that this is a real problem due to the current difficulties in paying rent and mortgages for workers. Moreover, he argued that this legislation is relevant because it “changes lives”, given that paying rent in large cities is “mission impossible”.
– “Beware of getting into right-wing frameworks. In Italy we see abstention…”, Díaz stressed, insisting that this amendment “is not compatible” with the position of Unidas Podemos, while at the same time expressing her disagreement with her partner’s approach to this proposal. Record methane leak flows from damaged Baltic Sea pipelines:
– Methane leaking from the damaged Nord Stream pipelines is likely to be the biggest burst of the potent greenhouse gas on record, by far. The Nord Stream pipeline leaks that were pumping huge volumes of methane into the Baltic Sea and atmosphere could discharge as much as five times as much of the potent greenhouse as was released by the Aliso Canyon disaster, the largest known terrestrial release of methane in U.S. history. It is also the equivalent of one third of Denmark’s total annual greenhouse gas emissions, a Danish official warned Wednesday. (No mention of harm to the sea creatures in the area. -Ed.) Russian annexation of Ukraine territory expected within days:
– Moscow was poised on Wednesday to annex a swath of Ukraine, releasing what it called vote tallies showing support in four partially occupied provinces to join Russia, after what Kyiv and the West denounced as illegal sham referendums held at gunpoint.
– On Moscow’s Red Square, a tribune with giant video screens has been set up, with billboards proclaiming “Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson – Russia!”. “The results are clear. Welcome home, to Russia!,” Dmitry Medvedev, a former president who serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said on Telegram.
– President Vladimir Putin could proclaim the annexation in a speech within days, just over a week since he endorsed the referendums, ordered a military mobilisation at home and threatened to defend Russia with nuclear weapons if necessary.
– The Russian-installed administrations of the four Ukrainian provinces on Wednesday officially asked Putin to incorporate them into Russia, which Russian officials have suggested is a formality.

Hurricane Ian makes landfall in southwest Florida as Category 4 storm:
– Hurricane Ian made landfall Wednesday in southwest Florida as one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the U.S., swamping streets with water and smashing trees along the coast while moving at a crawl that threatened catastrophic flooding across a wide area.
– Barely an hour after the massive storm trudged ashore, a coastal sheriff’s office reported that it was already getting a significant number of calls from people trapped in homes. The hurricane’s center struck near Cayo Costa, a protected barrier island just west of heavily populated Fort Myers.
– The Category 4 storm slammed the coast with 150 mph (241 kph) winds and pushed a wall of storm surge accumulated during its slow march over the Gulf of Mexico. More than 1 million Florida homes and businesses were without electricity. The storm previously tore into Cuba, killing two people and bringing down the country’s entire electrical grid.
– About 2.5 million people were ordered to evacuate southwest Florida before Ian hit, but by law no one could be forced to flee. Though expected to weaken to a tropical storm as it marched inland at about 9 mph (14 kph), Ian’s hurricane force winds were likely to be felt well into central Florida. TASS- Russian diplomat warns Biden over pipeline incidents:
“US President Joe Biden must answer the question of whether the United States carried out its threat on September 25 and 26 when an emergency was reported at three lines of Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2, which has been preliminarily recognized as ruptures, whereas he suggested those were blown up,” the Russian diplomat said on her Telegram channel. On it, she posted a video in which the US leader delivers the speech in question. (Biden said in a speech before the invasion of Ukraine, that if Russia attacked, that would be “the end” of the Nord pipelines. See in video. Has he carried out his threat? -Ed.)
“His statement of intent was backed up with a promise. One must be responsible for one’s words. Failure to understand what one says does not absolve anyone of responsibility. Europe must know the truth!” Zakharova emphasized. Full article: https://tass.com/politics/1514731 & VIDEO LINK

ENERGY CRISIS

EU vows to protect energy network after ‘sabotage’ of Russian gas pipeline- some sources now reporting there are 4 leaks:
– The European Union on Wednesday promised a “robust” response to any intentional disruption of its energy infrastructure after saying it suspected sabotage was behind gas leaks discovered this week on subsea Russian pipelines to Europe.
– As gas spewed out under the Baltic Sea for a third day after first being detected, it remained far from clear who might be responsible for any sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines that Russia and European partners spent billions of dollars building. EU tells countries gas price cap would come with risks:
– The European Commission has warned EU countries that a broad cap on gas prices could be complex to launch and pose risks to energy security, amid calls from countries for Brussels to step in to tame high fuel prices.
– The Commission shared a document with countries on Wednesday, analysing various options the EU could consider to curb high gas prices, after 15 of the bloc’s 27 member states this week urged the EU to propose a cap on gas prices.
– The document, seen by Reuters, said a wholesale price cap for exchange transactions – covering both liquefied natural gas and pipeline supplies – could disrupt flows of fuel between EU countries.
– That’s because price signals would no longer help drive flows to regions where demand is high or supply scarce, the Commission said. It suggested such a price cap could only work if a new entity was launched to allocate and ship scarce fuel supplies between states. See a spiral galaxy’s haunting ‘skeleton’ in a chilly new space telescope image: Some skeletons are more sparkly than scary. A new image of a far-off galaxy shows us that what lurks underneath a spiral galaxy can be just as spectacular as what our eyes can see. The new images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope’s Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) show IC 5332, a spiral galaxy about 29,000 light years away from the Earth in the constellation Sculptor. It has a diameter of roughly 66,000 light years, making it slightly larger than our Milky Way galaxy. Photo: NASA. The Axarquia Film Festival: 7-22 Oct 2022
– La Axarquía Film Festival is an annual event and is unique in the Andalusian audiovisual scene. Its aim is to bring cinema and its production to the rural municipalities of the Axarquia region and the province, with less than 5,000 inhabitants, thus improving the audiovisual cultural offer and promoting these territories as cultural tourist destinations.
– The festival begins in the capital of the Axarquia on October 7th and will continue with an itinerant programme in the eight municipalities which, in addition to Vélez-Málaga, are Almáchar, El Borge, Moclinejo, Benamargosa, Benamocarra, Macharaviaya and Iznate.
– It runs until 22 October and will be screened in the squares, streets and churches of these municipalities films created within the framework of the Axarquia Rural Film School as well as other selected short films of fiction, documentary and animation; all first works or second works of students and emerging filmmakers from all over Spain that can be enjoyed free of charge in open-air public spaces.
– The closing gala will be held on the 22nd of October in the town of Almáchar, where the works awarded by the juries will be announced and the prizes in the different competition sections will be presented.

DoctorLaptop’s Computer Repairs & Services: Have your computer properly maintained with an annual  professional servicing to keep it clean, running cool and thus extend its life. You don’t wait till your car engine freezes before you change your oil, now do you?  If you do, the repair costs far more than the oil changes you skipped. It’s the same with computers. An inexpensive annual maintenance service is far cheaper than waiting until the device is annoyingly slow and popping up error messages, and thus in need of an expensive repair. Today’s computers are more compact, have smaller fans, and work much harder than your old Win XP laptop. So they must be treated properly to maintain optimum performance. Old laptops were like common Volkswagens; today’s laptops are more like Porsches, in performance as well as in maintenance requirements. Today’s malware and spyware wants to collect your data, not break or slow down your machine. Just because your computer is running OK does not mean it is free of malware and trackers. Infected computers can provide vital info to identity thieves & bank account hackers. Protect your computer & your privacy with annual servicing. My working hours are 2pm to 8pm, Monday thru Friday. The Doctor is closed on weekends. Saturday pickups are possible by appointment. I don’t answer the phone before 12pm, missed calls will be returned that afternoon. Always include the patient’s make and model number when making support requests. DoctorLaptop’s Website & Contact Info: doctorlaptop@protonmail.com or call 675 993 069 after 12pm. If You Don’t Approve of Sex Education in Classroom, You Must “enjoy the bodies of boys, girls and women without their sexual consent,” Says Secretary of State for Equality, Angela Rodriguez:
{Translation, summary}
– The Secretary of State for Equality, Ángela Rodríguez, defended sex education in the classroom on Tuesday, and said that those who are bothered by it are those who “enjoy the bodies of boys, girls and women without their sexual consent.”
– Rodríguez made this statement during her appearance before the Senate Equality Committee in response to statements made by the minister Irene Montero last week on the right to receive affective-sexual education, which representatives from the conservative Vox and Ciudadanos parties interpreted as her having defended relations with children.
-In this sense, she emphasized that this education serves to explain at school that it is right to treat well and wrong to treat badly, to learn about emotions, contraception and consent because, in her opinion, it is the only possible way to understand “how to have a consensual sexual relationship”. (Controversial topics like the new “gender options” are also included, drawing the ire of some parents. And this is how the Spanish Secretary of State for Equality publicly replies to concerned parents? -Ed. ) Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1083444/igualdad-afirma-que-la-educacion-sexual-molesta-a-quien-disfruta-del-sexo-no-consentido/

ANDALUCIA

New rules for ride-hailing companies in Andalucía- no waiting outside stations and hotels, tests for drivers and fare controls:
– The regional government says the regulations have been designed to enable companies such as Uber, Cabify and Bolt to operate while also protecting the taxi sector, but neither is happy.
– The Junta de Andalucía has approved new regulations that will enable ride-hailing companies such as Uber, Cabify and Bolt to continue operating within towns and cities from 1 October. If it had not done so, the vehicles would only have been able to transport passengers between towns and not within the same municipality.
– The regulations restrict the ride-hailing firms in order to protect the taxi sector, which sees them as unfair competition. The drivers will not be able to pick up passengers from busy areas such as airports, railway stations, bus stations, hotels and shopping centres unless pre-booked and clients will no longer be able to use the geo-location system to see where a vehicle is before booking it. EUROPE

Europe investigates ‘attacks’ on Russian gas pipelines to Europe:
– Europe was investigating on Tuesday what Germany, Denmark and Sweden said were attacks which had caused major leaks into the Baltic Sea from two Russian gas pipelines at the centre of an energy standoff. But it remained far from clear who might be behind the leaks that were first reported on Monday or any foul play, if proven, on the Nord Stream pipelines that Russia and European partners spent billions of dollars building.
– German Economy Minister Robert Habeck told business leaders the leaks were due to targeted attacks on the infrastructure and Berlin now knew for sure “that they were not caused by natural occurrences or events or material fatigue.” Sweden’s and Denmark’s prime ministers said the leaks were clearly caused by deliberate actions, with information suggesting likely sabotage, while Poland’s premier blamed sabotage, without citing evidence. Moscow’s proxies in occupied Ukraine regions claim landslide votes to join Russia: 27/09/2022
– Russian-installed officials in occupied regions of Ukraine reported huge majorities on Tuesday in favour of becoming part of Russia after five days of voting in so-called referendums that Kyiv and the West have denounced as a sham.
– Hastily arranged votes had taken place in four areas – the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, and to the south Zaporizhzhia and Kherson – that make up about 15% of Ukrainian territory.
– Luhansk authorities said 98.5% of people there had voted to join Russia, based on 69% of ballots counted. In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian-appointed official put the figure at 93.1 % with the count now completed. while in Kherson the “yes” vote was running at more than 87%, according to the head of the voting committee. Russia’s Tass news agency said 93.95% in Donetsk region had voted in favour, with nearly 32% of the ballots counted. Number of People Living in Germany Exceeded 84 Million for the First Time:
– Destatis pointed out that such an extensive growth of the population was recorded only in 1992 when borders opened in eastern Europe and in 2015 when a high number of migrants left their country to reach Germany.
– “The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that following German reunification, such extensive population growth was recorded only in 1992 (+700,000), when borders had been opened in eastern Europe and war was waged in Yugoslavia, and in 2015, when migrants fled to Germany (+978,000). For comparison,” the statement of Destatis reads. Full article: https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/number-of-people-living-in-germany-exceeded-84-million-for-the-first-time/

Canada to lift all COVID-19 restrictions for travelers entering the country:
– Travelers, regardless if they’re Canadian citizens or not, will no longer have to submit public health information through an application the government launched for travelers before or after they enter the country, provide proof of vaccination, go through pre- or on-arrival testing, quarantine or isolate, or monitor and report if they’ve developed COVID-19 symptoms when arriving in Canada, the country’s public health agency said.
– Additionally, the Canadian government said travelers will no longer be required to wear masks on planes and trains, adding that it strongly recommends people “wear high-quality and well-fitted masks during their journeys.” Full article: https://abcnews.go.com/Health/canada-lift-covid-19-restriction-travelers-entering-country/story?id=90538082

Private Physicians Complaints Against Insurers Likely To Drive Up Private Medical Insurance Rates, Doctors Asking 145 percent Increase In Fees For Services: {Translation}
– Doctors in private health care are on a “war footing” with insurance companies. Members of the Andalusian Council of Medical Associations speak of a “critical” situation, with “indecent” conditions and fees.
– The self-employed doctors who have opted for the private sector are demanding that the insurers sit down to negotiate and are asking for a 145 percent increase in fees. According to the president of the Andalusian Council of Medical Associations, Antonio Aguado, the companies continue to pay “prices similar to those of 30 years ago”. For example, they charge “around seven euros for the first consultation, half that for the second and nothing for the third, but we have to continue to provide care because we owe it to our patients”. “They take advantage of the doctors,” said Alfonso Carmona, spokesman for Free Practice for the Andalusian Council of Medical Associations.
– Complaints are also made about the long working hours “in order to have a decent salary” and the contractual conditions. “In the private sector I don’t have holidays, if I leave I stop producing,” says Carmona, like any other self-employed worker, “and we don’t have the right to maternity or sick leave either, if I break a leg and am off work for three weeks not a penny comes into my house; I go out if I have insurance, which has to be paid for.
– José Luis Perea, secretary general of the Association of Self-Employed Workers, has indicated that not only do they want “decent” rates, but also that with the improvement in conditions “a better quality of care is allowed and patient safety is not compromised; at the end of the private sector we cannot make a public sector two, with queues and delays”.
– The Spanish government and the Andalusian regional government are asked to “take action” and mediate with the insurers.
– In Andalusia, 13,118 doctors work in private health care. In Malaga there are 4,073, the third Spanish city with the most doctors in the private sector. Source, Spanish: https://andaluciainformacion.es/andalucia/1083333/los-medicos-privados-contra-las-aseguradoras/

Football News- Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in Nations League finals as Czechs go down: Alvaro Morata’s late goal earned Spain a 1-0 win in Portugal and the last place in the UEFA Nations League finals on Tuesday, while the Czech Republic were relegated from the top tier after losing in Switzerland.
– Portugal, winners of the inaugural Nations League in 2019, needed just a point in Braga to finish top of Group A2 but dropped to second as Morata tapped in Nico Williams’ header on 88 minutes.
– Spain join the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia in the finals which are scheduled for June next year.
– Switzerland, who beat Spain 2-1 in Zaragoza on Saturday, were indebted to goalkeeper Yann Sommer as he saved a second-half penalty to preserve victory over the Czechs. Full article: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220927-spain-pip-portugal-to-nations-league-finals-as-czechs-go-down

SPACE

This is when you can next see the strange stream of lights in the night sky that appeared on Sunday:
– These lights were Starlink satellites which had been launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company. They are being sent up to space in groups of around 50 at a time, and the intention is to have 4,000 there in total to provide internet coverage over the entire world including the most remote areas.
– Anyone who is sorry not to have seen the lights on that occasion may have another chance soon. Astrophysicist José María Madiedo, the chief researcher at the Smart Project, has said that another launch is being planned from Cape Cañaveral in Florida on 30 September. Sender's First Name / Nearest Town

Note: You may additionally include a location to meet or pickup,
but your location is required in any case. If selling an item from a location different from where you reside, you must include both.
For example: "...Buyer collects in Nerja, John/Malaga"
Why? DigameXtra covers a large area. So, for example, readers in Motril are unlikely to make recommendations, or call about most for-sale items, if they know you are located in Coin. As for including both locations in for-sale posts, the buyer needs to know where to collect the item, but they will also want to know where you are from in case there is a problem. SPAIN

The Banks Lied! – Hollow Promises To Add Cash Machines To Promote Access For Seniors and Rural Customers, Have Shut Almost 4000 Since 2020:
– The banking restructuring process in Spain – with a constant trickle of branch closures and a greater use of cards to the detriment of cash – has led to a precipitous drop in the number of available ATMs that has accelerated with the pandemic.
– According to the latest statistics from the Bank of Spain, national entities had 46,530 dispensers distributed throughout the national geography at the end of the second quarter, 3,971 less than at the end of 2019, just before the outbreak of the health crisis.
– The figure is also the lowest since the previous minimum set in 2000, when the number of ATMs barely exceeded 44,800. And it also represents a sharp decline of almost 25% from the maximum peak reached in 2008, when citizens could access 61,714 ATMs. In other words, since the previous financial crisis, a total of 15,184 cash dispensers have disappeared. Looking For The Best Electricity Rates:
– Finding a cheaper tariff is one of the best ways to counteract skyrocketing electricity bills, but a leading consumer watchdog has warned Spain’s electricity providers are not always open to telling customers about the best deal they can get. Here are some options.
– Repsol Tarifa Largo Plazo
According to the OCU, the Repsol Tarifa ‘Largo Plazo’ can only be found via this link (https://www.repsol.es/particulares/hogar/luz-y-gas/tarifas/tarifa-precio-fijo-largo-plazo/), because the offer is actually hidden on the Repsol website. And for good reason, too. The Repsol tariff is among the best offers the market in terms of price per kWh consumed, although the power for off-peak time is a little more than some of the other offers on the list.
The tariff is non-permanent, with a fixed price rate for 3 years.
kWh Prices
Price per kWh consumed: €0.17/kWh.
Peak hours: €29.90 per kW.
Off-peak hours: €29.90 per kW.
– Iberdrola Online Plan
The Iberdrola Online Plan, which you can find here (https://www.iberdrola.es/en/electricity/mac/online-plan), is only available until September 30th, so be sure to take advantage of it as soon as possible.
Using Iberdrola’s online tool, you can select a kW rate and it will give you price estimates for the different values. If you’re environmentally minded, Iberdrola’s Online Plan claims to use 100 percent green electricity, so you can enjoy renewable energy and reduce your CO2 emissions.
There’s also 14 hours of savings during the night up until mid-morning.
This plan is only for customers who take out the contract online, as the name suggests, and features entirely electronic billing.
kWh Prices
Price per kWh consumed: €0.159353 + metered gas cost (in August €0.161529 /kWh).
Price per kW contracted during peak hours (fixed term): €30.66747.
Price per kW contracted during off-peak hours (fixed term): €4.104338.
Note the prices will be revised in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on January 1st.
– Octopus Energy (https://octopus.energy/)
Octopus Energy tariffs are not permanent and is all done online, which allows you the flexibility to move around again in the future if you come across a better offer. Octopus offer two fixed prices:
Octopus 3: price per kWh consumed during peak hours is 0.254 €/kWh; at flat time 0.209 €/kWh; and at off-peak hours 0.185 €/kWh.
Octopus Relax: price per kWh consumed of 0.212 €/kWh.
kWh Prices (both Octopus tariffs)
Peak hours (fixed term): €32.85.
Off-peak hours (fixed term): €6.57.
– Iberdrola Special Plan
The Iberdrola Special Plan offers a 15 percent discount during the first year, and its kWh prices for both on and off-peak are competitive with other cheaper tariffs.
kWh Prices
Price per kWh consumed: €0.178662 (minus the 15 percent extra discount) but plus a gas metering cost (which in August was €0.161529/kWh.)
Peak hours (fixed term): €30.52381
Off-peak hours (fixed term): €3.512901
– Endesa ‘One Luz’ Tariff (https://endesaluz.es/)
Endesa is currently offering the ‘One Luz’ tariff, which offers a 10 percent discount on consumption and an additional 10 percent reduction throughout the first year.
kWh Prices
Price per kWh consumed: €0.189 (plus the 10 percent +10 percent discount) + the metered gas cost (which in August was €0.161529/KWh).
Peak hours (fixed term): €33.86.
Off-peak hours (fixed term): €7.9973
– Total Energies (https://www.totalenergies.es/es/hogares/tarifas-luz)
Another interesting option is Total Energies, who offer entirely personalised pricing plans. Basically, Total Energies want to attract your business by outdoing your current rate. In order to receive a quote and see how it stacks up against your current provider, you simply upload a copy of your current bill to the website and Total Energies make an offer, often bettering your current rate.
If they make an offer, Total Energies promise a discount lasting for 4 years, although the price on which the discount is fixed is only valid for 12 months. Full article (paywall): https://www.thelocal.es/20220923/the-cheapest-rates-spains-electricity-companies-dont-want-you-to-know-about/

– Once again, multimillionaire Elon Musk was responsible, as this was part of his artificial satellite programme. The lights were 52 Starlink satellites launched from his Space X company from Florida on Saturday.
– Satellites such as these have been orbiting the Earth for several years and the aim is to bring Internet to the entire planet, including the most isolated areas.
– Astrophysicist José María Madiedo said the lights were visible between 9.10 and 9.15pm on Sunday, and the satellites had not actually been above Andalucía but could be seen from a vast distance. “Over time they will separate from each other and the line will not be as clear to see,” he said. “SpaceX wants to put 40,000 satellites in space altogether so it is probable that we will see lines of lights such as these quite regularly”. Crashing pound falls to US dollar all-time low, squeezing beer and mortgages:
– The UK government’s economic plans have seen the pound sink to an all-time low against the US dollar, with market confidence taking a hammering in the wake of the chancellor’s unveiling of the biggest tax cuts in over 50 years and a hint that more cuts could be on the way.
– Sterling has hit its lowest level against the dollar since decimalisation in 1971, falling by more than 4 per cent to just 1.03 dollars in early Asia trading before it regained some ground to about 1.07 dollars earlier today (Monday, 26 September).
– The euro also hit a fresh 20-year low against the dollar amid recession and energy-security fears ahead of what is expected to be a painful winter across Europe, with the war in Ukraine showing no sign of ending.
– Experts warned that the pound’s plunge towards parity with the dollar will send the cost of goods soaring even higher, potentially worsening the cost-of-living crisis. The pound’s fall also means it will be more expensive for the government to borrow money – just when it has decided to borrow billions more. La Liga demands ‘positive’ broadcasting of football matches:
– La Liga has a requirement in their broadcasting rules that the winning bidders of the television rights to Spain’s topflight in the 2022-23 season must cover the league “positively”.
– Journalists associations in Spain have complained about the restrictions, which state that the league can ask for any individual who does not comply to be removed from their post.
– Teresa Ribeiro, the OSCE Representative on Media Freedom showed concern over the restrictions stated. “The new conditions unreasonably limit media freedom and the public’s right to information,” said Ribeiro. “This is unfortunately becoming a growing practice in the world of football.”
– A La Liga source told AFP that the restrictions were designed to “avoid tabloid topics and player family issues” during broadcasts of the games and in post-match interviews. Full article: https://www.thelocal.es/20220923/la-liga-demands-positive-broadcasting-of-football-matches/

More Proof Cloud Storage Is Not Safe & Secure – Warning of damage to old photos stored in Google Photos: {Translation}
– Some users’ old photos on the Google Photos service have turned out to be damaged, showing what resembles physical watermarks, a flaw identified on all versions of the service, the website as well as Android, Apple, and Windows apps.
– Google Photos users have found in recent days that their older photos, those that have been stored on the service for at least five years, are showing marks, discolorations and distorted areas, and white spots in some cases.
– These marks, which many have identified as similar to those that water would physically leave behind, have appeared on all versions of the service, both on Android and iOS as well as on the web, as 9to5Google points out. The complaints appear on Google’s Help forum but also on portals such as Reddit, but so far the company has not said anything about it. This is just one more reason why saving your data to an external hard drive is far more reliable than a cloud service. But you should do both, as external hard drives do get lost or destroyed occasionally. Fitbit Teams With Google To Add Your Real-time Health Data to Google’s Ever Growing Profile of You – To Make Account Login Mandatory for New Fitbit Users in 2023:
– Wearable technology company Fitbit has announced a new clause that requires users to switch to a Google account “sometime” in 2023. “In 2023, we plan to launch Google accounts on Fitbit, which will enable use of Fitbit with a Google account,” the Google-owned fitness devices maker said.
– The switch will not go live for all users in 2023. Rather, support for Fitbit accounts is expected to continue until at least the beginning of 2025, after which a Google account will be mandatory for using the devices.
– The deeper integration also means that a Google account will be compulsory to sign up for Fitbit and activate new features, including those that incorporate Google products and services such as Google Assistant.
– The development comes more than three years after Google announced similar changes in May 2019 after its acquisition of smart home company Nest, another scam to collect data related to activities and visitors to your home.
Editor’s Note: Google’s abuses of private data are well documented. So be very skeptical when they say “Google stressed that users’ Fitbit personal information will not be used to serve ads.” If history is any indication, that is precisely what the data will be used for! Google will also share the Fitbit data with their business partners; it will be very popular with insurance companies and health providers who will consult this data before providing you products or services. SPAIN

Consumer associations have pointed their fingers at six food firms for adopting ‘shrinkflation’, a practice that is legal but lacking transparency:
– Shrinkflation. That is the term used when brands reduce the weight of their packs but keep the price the same: in other words, consumers are receiving less of the product but paying as much as they always did. The operation is legal, as long as the weight shown on the label is accurate, but consumer associations are accusing the firms of a lack of transparency.
– Spain’s Consumers and Users Organisation (OCU) has provided some figures about this tactic which is usually associated with a general increase in prices. It says 7% of the 273 products it looked at were subject to shrinkflation. For example, what was an 800 gramme pack of ColaCao drink powder now weighs 760; 500g of Tulipán margarine is now 400g; a two-litre bottle of Pepsi Cola is now 1.75 litres; a pack of Revilla chorizo costing 1 euro contains 65g instead of the previous 80; the 110-gramme pack of Campofrío ham for one euro now weighs 85g and every Activia yoghurt now weighs 5 grammes less.
– Due to this situation, the OCU has reported Pastas Gallo, Danone, Pescanova, ColaCao, Tulipán and Campofrío to the National Commission of Markets and Competition. No response has been received as yet, and the OCU says it cannot rule out reporting more brands and companies as well.
– “Charging the same but giving consumers less is unfair competition with manufacturers who increase their prices,” said sources at the OCU, which has begun a campaign to encourage people to report cases of shrinkflation and hidden price increases when they see them. Two thousand residents of Periana have been unable to consume tap water for a week: {Translation} 24Sept22
– Around two thousand of the three thousand residents of Periana are still a week later unable to drink the water that reaches their homes, due to high levels of turbidity. The problem was detected last Friday, when the low level of the well at the source of the river Guaro, which supplies the main town of the Axarquia municipality, increased the levels of turbidity in the water, forcing the Town Hall to advise the residents not to drink it.
– After a week, two more analyses have been carried out, without positive results. The mayor of Perian, Rafael Torrubia (PSOE), explained on Thursday that the workers are relocating the pumps of one of the two boreholes to try to improve the quality of the water. At the same time, the Consistory is going to purchase new filters to treat it. At the same time, work is being done to connect the second borehole, which until last August was used for irrigation, to the supply network. The municipality’s farms have suspended irrigation due to the drought.
– At the same time, the Consistory is working to install a pipeline from the source of the Batán to the town of Periana. These resources, which have hardly diminished, go to the districts of Mondrón, Los Marines, Vilo and Los Parrales. Residents of the municipality have complained to this newspaper that the irrigation of several avocado farms “has overexploited the Guaro aquifer”. Photo: Youtube. EUROPE

Italians expected to elect right-wing government led by Meloni:
– Italians voted on Sunday in an election that is forecast to return the country’s most right-wing government since World War Two and pave the way for Giorgia Meloni to become its first woman prime minister.
– The complex calculations required by a hybrid proportional/first-past-the-post electoral law mean it may be many hours before the composition of a new slimmed-down parliament is known. Even if there is a clear cut result, the next government is unlikely to take office before late October, with the new parliament not meeting until Oct. 13.
– Parts of Italy had heavy rain on Sunday, with the Campania region around the southern city of Naples particularly badly affected. That appeared to have put off some voters, with turnout nationally only around 51% four hours before polls closed, compared to more than 58% at the same stage in 2018. UPDATE 25Sept22 23:07 – Italy’s right-wing, led by Meloni wins election, according to exit polls: A right-wing alliance led by Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party looks set to win a clear majority in the next parliament, exit polls said on Sunday after voting ended in an Italian national election. An exit poll for state broadcaster RAI said the bloc of conservative parties, that also includes Matteo Salvini’s League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, won between 41 and 45%, enough to guarantee control of both houses of parliament.
Italy’s electoral law favours groups that manage to create pre-ballot pacts, giving them an outsized number of seats by comparison with their vote tally. Full results are expected by early Monday. Full article:

Tennis News- Laver Cup 2022 Results- Team World Defeats Team Europe 13-8:
– Team Europe included a cast of Hall of Fame level players- Nadal, Federer, Murray and Djokovic.
– Team World was down 8-4 to Team Europe going into the final of day of play at the Laver Cup in London—and they had lost to them in all four previous editions of the international team competition—but heroics from Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jack Sock and ultimately Frances Tiafoe on Sunday lifted them to victory for the very first time.
– Tiafoe clinched Team World’s first ever Laver Cup title with a dramatic 1-6, 7-6 (11), 10-8 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, fighting off an incredible four match points in the second set tie-break before closing it out in a match tie-break in the third set. SPACE

Jupiter is coming its closest to Earth in decades:
– The gas giant Jupiter is coming the closest it has come to Earth in 59 years this Monday and will be particularly visible because it coincides with another event called opposition.
– When in opposition, a planet is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun, so you could draw a straight line from the sun to Earth to Jupiter, all in alignment. Jupiter’s opposition happens every 13 months. Looking from the Earth, when the sun sets in the west, Jupiter will rise in the east, directly opposite. During opposition, planets appear at their biggest and brightest.
– Jupiter is coming closer to Earth than it has since 1963. Because of Earth’s and Jupiter’s differing orbits around the sun, they don’t pass each other at the same distance each time. When it’s closest on Monday, Jupiter will be about 367 million miles from Earth, according to NASA. At its farthest, it’s 600 million miles away. SCAMS

Hack that leaves some Hyundai, Kia cars vulnerable:
– Some Hyundai and Kia cars and SUVs are missing a “key” anti-theft device, and thieves know. An insurance industry group says these cars are stolen at nearly twice the rate of the rest of the auto industry because their keys lack computer chips for theft “immobilizer” systems.
– Chip keys, which started to show up in the 1990s, communicate with another chip in the ignition switch. If they match, the engines will start. If they don’t match, a thief can’t start the engine.
– Keys don’t have an immobilizer system in several lower-priced versions of vehicles from the two South Korean automakers such as the Kia Rio and Sportage and the Hyundai Accent, the institute said.

Editor’s Note To Beer Lovers- Torrox Costa Oktoberfest: I visited Friday at 11:30pm. The good news, there is a much larger selection of regional German beers on tap than in previous years. The bad news is the variety of craft beers is smaller. I didn’t see a stall of the craft brewery from Toledo, forgot the name, that had the amazing blueberry porter last year. The sound quality is typically less than stellar, but there are a lot more tables & seats this year.

NOTICE!
Submissions for posting in sections below
must include this info or they will be returned !!!

Your cooperation is appreciated.

MOONETTE – Organic Skincare for Mature Skin

We are a Torrox-based company specialising in the creation of formulae which help prevent premature skin ageing. We are committed to making effective products at affordable prices.
Your skin health matters to us. How you feed your skin is as important as how you feed your body. Why settle for anything less than natural and organic?
As our skin is the first layer of our defence against microbial infections, ultraviolet radiation and environmental contamination it plays a vital role in our health. As we grow older, however, our skin becomes thinner, wrinkled, and more sensitive; hence it requires the use of treatments containing specific ingredients to the care of treating mature skin.
Recognising this need we have created a range of formulae which help
-slow down ageing process by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
-improve facial complexion and eliminate blemishes.
At Moonette, we are passionate about health, beauty and plants. Your skin will benefit from the properties of botanic essential oils combined with a selection of nutrients for deep hydration, cell revitalization and antioxidant effect, all sourced from the finest natural ingredients with gorgeous fragrances.

NOTICE!
Submissions for posting in sections below
must include this info or they will be returned !!!

Your cooperation is appreciated.

SPAIN

How foreigners can get fast-track citizenship in Spain:
– Overall, it can end up taking 12 to 13 years for you to finally get your hands on a Spanish passport and ID. That’s a very long wait for most people, especially if they want to consolidate their right to live in Spain now and in the future. However, there are a number of cases in which the wait to get citizenship through residency can be up to four times shorter, even when factoring in the long processing times in Spain:
– Being married to a Spanish national – one year to apply.
– Having the right nationality – two years to apply.
– Being married to the person with the right nationality – three to four years to apply.
– Being born in Spain – one year to apply.
– Having Spanish blood ties – one year to apply
– Naturalisation letter – potentially zero years to apply

ANDALUCIA

Health will start vaccination against the flu and the fourth Covid dose on October 3: {Translation, summary}
– The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, announced on Thursday that the flu vaccination campaign will begin on 3 October in Andalusia and that it will be carried out in conjunction with the fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine for people over 80 years of age in residential homes.
– This year the flu vaccination campaign will include children between the ages of six months and five years, as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
– The first group to receive this second booster dose will be people over the age of 80 living in residential homes, followed by inoculation of people over the age of 60 and staff in health and social care centres. These are the new tax measures approved by the Board of Andalusia: {Translation, summary}
– The suspension of the water charges will mean an estimated overall saving of 140 million euros for families and companies during the year 2023 alone.
– With regard to personal income tax, the Andalusian government has agreed on two measures: the deflation of the first brackets of the regional rate and the increase in the personal and family minimum tax exemptions.
– The decree law approved by the Governing Council provides for the practical abolition of the Wealth Tax by means of a 100% tax rebate. As it is a devolved tax, only the central government has the power to abolish it.
– Finally, the Decree-Law provides for an increase in the maximum period for deferment and instalments of debts owed by citizens, companies and institutions to the Junta de Andalucía, up to 12 years in general. The objective, in line with the rest of the measures included in the Decree-Law, is to provide taxpayers with payment facilities, in the context of the current economic slowdown. Until now, the maximum period that had been applied, subject to a series of requirements, was ten years. Source, Spanish: https://www.granadadigital.es/medidas-fiscales-aprobadas-junta-andalucia/

Britain lifts ban on gas fracking in push for energy independence:
Britain on Thursday formally lifted a moratorium on fracking for shale gas that has been in place since 2019, saying strengthening the country’s energy supply was an “absolute priority”. The government said ending the ban would allow drilling to restart and more data to be gathered, building an understanding of how shale gas can be safely extracted where there was local support.

NOTICE!
Submissions for posting in sections below
must include this info or they will be returned !!!

Your cooperation is appreciated.

ANDALUCIA

Paying Fares On Public Transport Possible Soon, With Phone App –  Starting Monday In Rincón de la Victoria: {Translation, summary}
– The Regional Minister for Development, Territorial Planning and Housing, Marifrán Carazo, has announced the implementation of the virtual public transport card in Andalusia, which will allow secure payment by mobile phone and which will be launched on Monday 26 September in Rincón de la Victoria.
– The Councillor pointed out that the first experience of the virtual card will be carried out in the buses of Rincón de la Victoria to “later be extended to the rest of the lines of the Malaga Consortium and then to the rest of Andalusia”. The Andalusian Regional Government has already allocated 1.6 million euros from European Next Generation funds for its implementation throughout the autonomous region.
– The virtual card can be used by those who have a mobile phone with an Android 6.0 or higher system and NFC chip and install the Consorcio Málaga app on their terminal. This application includes, in addition to payment facilities, advantages such as the possibility of topping up or checking the number of journeys paid for. Moreover, it does not require the payment of annual licences per card and can work offline. The councillor highlighted among its advantages that “the card immediately updates the fare systems, so that, for example, the discounts currently in force will be applied”.

‘Not a bluff’ – Putin mobilizes reservists, threatens West with nuclear weapons:
– Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered that as many as 300,000 reservists be called up to fight in Ukraine and threatened to use nuclear weapons against the West, stressing that his words were “not a bluff.” Putin said he has already signed the decree for partial mobilization, which is due to start on Wednesday.
– In a national address that was televised Wednesday morning, Putin warned that he would use all the means available to protect Russia’s territory, in what appeared to be a veiled reference to the country’s nuclear arsenal. “When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, to protect Russia and our people, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal,” Putin said, adding, “It’s not a bluff.”
– Putin accused the West of engaging in “nuclear blackmail” and noted “statements of some high-ranking representatives of the leading NATO states about the possibility of using nuclear weapons of mass destruction against Russia.” He didn’t identify who had made such comments.
